00:00:00.000 I've never been a big fan of this idea that a country is divided if people are voting for
00:00:12.900 starkly different political parties. I've always thought, hey, that's just democracy. That's what
00:00:17.560 people do. I mean, if you had everybody voting for the one party, you know, 100%, well, we call
00:00:22.260 those dictatorships, we call those rigged elections. I mean, it's not that big of a deal
00:00:26.120 that in the United States, you've always got about 50% Republican, 50% Democrat, and anybody who has
00:00:32.680 friends and family members, people they know in the United States, you probably know people who
00:00:37.080 voted for both parties, and you probably think, eh, come on, people are people. Most of them are
00:00:41.840 moderate and good-natured. It's not that big of a deal. So I always said, give me a break about this
00:00:46.580 divided nation stuff, and I certainly thought that about Canada. I'm now starting to have some doubts
00:00:54.120 about that, though. These federal election results, you look at the map, you look at the breakdowns,
00:01:00.660 you look at where votes grew for which parties where they shrunk, and you go, it is true. We are
00:01:05.960 becoming increasingly divided, and we are developing something similar to the bi-coastal elite phenomenon
00:01:12.560 they have in the United States, where the Democratic vote is shaved out of most of the eastern seaboard,
00:01:17.820 New York, and those adjacent areas, and then out west with California and the electoral college votes
00:01:23.460 over there. Something similar happening here in Canada, where you've got the British Columbia area,
00:01:28.920 and then you've got the GTA, which, I mean, it's not quite the eastern seaboard, but similar kind
00:01:34.180 of idea. You've got the GTA, and then you've got the Atlantic provinces, and then the greater Montreal
00:01:38.200 area, and that is the key to the liberal victory, especially the GTA. And then you have the liberals
00:01:44.520 completely shut out of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Now, all of that is something we've gotten used to
00:01:50.200 seeing in Canadian politics over the last couple decades, but it has gotten heightened. It has
00:01:55.200 gotten increased. And look at some of the increases in the actual riding results. Now, I saw breakdowns of
00:02:02.140 where conservative support grew, where conservative support dropped, and it's interesting to see that
00:02:07.220 in places where they are already popular and where they already win, that's where the conservatives got
00:02:12.120 the most amount of their gains, in those ridings like Alberta ridings or in conservative strongholds.
00:02:17.000 And then you take ridings like in downtown Toronto, for instance, which I know the conservatives are
00:02:21.180 never expected to win, but it's still instructive to see how much vote they got, because they usually
00:02:26.260 get a few thousand votes or more in those ridings. Well, they have lost 10-20% support in those
00:02:32.980 ridings. So the GTA, downtown Toronto, getting even more liberal than ever before. Calgary, Alberta,
00:02:40.820 Saskatchewan, getting more conservative than ever before.
00:02:43.680 Now, there's going to be a lot of breakdown in the days and weeks, months, even years to come
00:02:48.840 about what all of this means, but it's not a good sign. We're seeing Wexit trending. We're seeing
00:02:55.080 Alberta separation trending. These are very real things. And I think if Justin Trudeau and Jagmeet
00:03:00.720 saying, do one thing when they sit together, I hope, I hope, I hope it's not them thinking,
00:03:05.420 how can we do more about climate change, which they just go on and on about already as it is.
00:03:10.540 How can we do more of these things that, quite frankly, there is not consensus on and there
00:03:16.380 are stark divides on them? Instead, they need to look at the unifying issues and move forward on
00:03:21.200 those. They need to seriously sit down and listen to Alberta. They need to talk with Jason Kenney and
00:03:26.280 say, let's try and figure some things out here. Unfortunately, I'm not optimistic that's going
00:03:31.580 to happen, but that's what we need right now. Are those divides? Well, they may only increase.
00:03:40.540 I guess it s inians' loved ones. But, that's in foam. Imarkt for one of these things and
