00:00:00.000 The mainstream media drum up a controversy about robocalls misinforming voters but then they drop
00:00:16.680 it as soon as the Liberals win the election. The Globe and Mail sheds a tear for alienated
00:00:21.840 Westerners but they also shed a tear for poor Justin Trudeau who has to deal with that unruly
00:00:27.560 bunch and will highlight some of the CBC's most partisan moments from the campaign. I'm your host
00:00:33.800 Candice Malcolm and welcome to This Week in Fake News. Hi everyone, thank you so much for tuning
00:00:41.840 in this Friday. I am coming to you once again from my living room. I said last week that I was going
00:00:48.840 to hopefully have my studio set up. My family just moved so we haven't set up the office yet,
00:00:53.840 haven't set up the studio so coming to you live from the living room. I'm holding out hope though
00:00:58.040 but that we will have the office and the studio ready by next week so I guess you'll have to tune
00:01:03.460 in next week to find out. Let's get right to the most biased news stories of the week. We'll start
00:01:09.040 out with election night. So I was pretty hesitant to even watch the mainstream media coverage of the
00:01:15.060 election because I knew exactly what I was going to expect especially from sort of the major players
00:01:20.580 CBC, CTV and Global. Now I will admit that they sort of have the best overall coverage because they
00:01:27.300 have the graphics, they have the posters, they have you know really impressive fancy sets so it's good
00:01:32.740 to kind of watch the horse race from their shows but then you have to put up with not only the very
00:01:38.320 left-wing and liberal analysis from the pundits that they have on there but also the stories that they
00:01:45.960 drum up. You know they always have like a token conservative on these panels and most of the
00:01:52.080 time that token conservative is just there basically apologizing for conservatives not really like
00:01:56.840 giving the conservative perspective or defending the conservative position or defending the conservative
00:02:02.200 worldview but pretty much just apologizing and admitting that conservatives are the worst. So
00:02:07.660 it's just always painful to see especially for that one conservative that just basically has to
00:02:12.440 like you know swallow their pride and seek strange new respect from all these horrible liberals. But
00:02:18.140 anyway my biggest pet peeve in election I was a story that we started came in early this is on CTV
00:02:25.380 they were drumming up this story of a scandal that was supposedly unfolding and they had their top
00:02:31.080 reporter Glenn McGregor on the case and once again it was like deja vu from 2011 but it was robocalls.
00:02:37.820 We were told that robocalls were providing disinformation and sending the wrong message to
00:02:43.400 Canadians and so they kept going to Glenn McGregor who was really just drumming up this story it was
00:02:48.360 like his old story from 2011 all over again and so here you can see he was tweeting about it.
00:02:55.520 Elections Canada says it is aware of reports of people receiving robocalls with misinformation about
00:03:01.260 voting day Nova Scotia and Quebec. It knows the robocalls are allowed on e-day and says any
00:03:07.640 complaints should be made to the Commissioner of Elections Canada. So from best I could tell this
00:03:13.100 story was that of human incompetence they were sending out robocalls on the morning of the election
00:03:19.100 that said to the person who would receive the call you know tomorrow's election day don't forget to vote
00:03:25.460 this is where you can vote and so presumably whoever's job it was to make sure that those calls all went
00:03:32.120 out on Sunday night messed up and some of them went out on Monday morning and so what was pretty
00:03:37.920 clearly just you know an amateur mistake the CTV was drumming up into this big possible scandal of
00:03:45.500 misinformation deliberately being sent out to confuse Canadians for folks who were paying attention to
00:03:52.160 political to Canadian politics back in 2011. Remember that this was a huge huge huge scandal
00:03:57.960 that was drummed up by the same reporter Glenn McGregor and one of his colleagues at the time
00:04:03.640 Steve Marr who wrote like seriously like a 50-part series on robocalls and how they supposedly
00:04:09.840 influenced the election it's it's one of those things that like I noticed that it happened in the
00:04:15.020 U.S. when Donald Trump won his election that like liberals in the media just couldn't quite wrap their
00:04:21.680 head around the idea that a conservative could win like as soon as a conservative wins or Republican wins
00:04:27.060 in the U.S. there has to be some explanation it can't just be that the the population and the
00:04:32.600 people support the politics of that politician there always has to be a scandal so in the U.S. it
00:04:37.780 was the Russia interference that they just rummed up and were like so convinced that it was going to
00:04:43.500 provide this whole explanation about how the election was stolen and in Canada in 2011 it was
00:04:48.800 exactly the same thing with the robocalls they the journalists couldn't accept the fact that the
00:04:54.540 conservatives were just more popular and actually won the election so they could only explain it away
00:04:59.320 by pointing at this mysterious kind of evasive campaign that must have happened where Canadians
00:05:05.760 were misinformed through these robocalls and so you saw that again unfolding it was like they were
00:05:10.920 preparing for a conservative victory that saying like oh you know this is the real reason why Andrew
00:05:17.220 Scheer might win because obviously this campaign of misinformation so they kept going to Glenn McGregor he kept
00:05:24.360 providing the same report and then all of a sudden the liberals started winning the campaign it was
00:05:29.420 pretty clear at that at some point that the liberals were going to win and then it was announced that
00:05:33.020 they'd want a minority government and all of a sudden they completely dropped the story they completely
00:05:39.040 dropped it they stopped going to Glenn McGregor they stopped asking about robocalls and you never
00:05:45.400 heard about it again they completely dropped it they never talked about it supposedly Nova Scotia and
00:05:51.580 Quebec were the places where this misinformation was going on you know the liberals did okay in those
00:05:57.440 places and wow just like that the story disappears so you know that here's just sort of the casual bias of
00:06:04.820 the mainstream media they want to drum up stories and then as soon as it turns out to be nothing as soon as
00:06:10.080 the liberals win then it turns out to be nothing all right let's move on the Globe and Mail wrote an
00:06:14.580 editorial that was just so annoying uh spare some sympathy for the west but also and also for Justin
00:06:22.800 Trudeau's western problem so you know this is kind of interesting because the Globe and Mail endorsed the
00:06:27.660 conservatives but you read this editorial and it's completely clear that the editorial board anyway
00:06:33.840 supports Justin Trudeau they talk about it how they defend how they support the carbon tax how they thought
00:06:39.860 that Premier Scott Moe's letter that he sent out um was basically over the top it was particularly
00:06:47.580 his here's quoting from the piece it was particularly off-putting to see Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe
00:06:52.080 release a letter the day after the election which he demanded the liberals cancel the federal carbon tax
00:06:56.660 as if the winning party would ever adopt the main plank of its defeated opponent and then you know
00:07:02.980 they kind of go on just saying like oh look at these westerners clamoring and you know making all
00:07:08.440 this noise um but really poor Justin Trudeau because he's the guy that has to deal with this
00:07:13.440 I mean look the reality is that Justin Trudeau won the election by pitting Canadians against each other
00:07:19.660 he he ran an incredibly divisive campaign he picked up on the most kind of wedge issues he could find
00:07:27.200 and he ran an incredibly negative campaign the whole idea was that he was saying in Quebec
00:07:32.360 in French you know we need a Quebecer to be in office we need someone who's going to stand up
00:07:39.300 to you know the rest of the country and what he was you know reading between the lines what he was
00:07:43.800 saying really was you know only I can stand up to the energy industry only I can stand up to these
00:07:48.740 loud mouth people in Alberta and Saskatchewan and you know pitting parts of the country against each
00:07:55.800 other doesn't end well and because of it we have two separatist movements in two separate parts of the
00:08:01.760 country I mean Trudeau barely won a minority government he lost the popular vote he won just
00:08:08.460 sort of through uh holding on in strategic areas of the country mostly in the GTA around uh areas around
00:08:15.120 Toronto and parts of Vancouver and you know the the reality is that the bloc Quebecois and the
00:08:22.560 conservative parties both picked up the most amount of seats um based on this sort of frustration in
00:08:27.960 Quebec that they aren't happy with the federation and the current situation and in Alberta they were
00:08:34.140 completely blocked out uh liberals got no seats in either Alberta or Saskatchewan so yeah it's going
00:08:40.400 to be tough for Justin Trudeau to deal with this situation I agree with the globe in that regard but
00:08:44.840 he it's it's of it's it's of his own making he was the one that put himself in the situation where
00:08:50.740 he wedged the country against each other where he you know didn't win any seats in Alberta or Saskatchewan
00:08:57.980 so there's going to be no representation from the west in his cabinet and you know he he's to blame
00:09:05.820 he's to blame and so no we shouldn't shed a tear for Trudeau we should share no sympathy for Trudeau
00:09:12.740 because he he has to deal with a situation that he himself created okay let's move on I want to talk
00:09:18.580 about one more uh piece our friend over at Post Millennial Graham Gordon who used to contribute
00:09:24.080 here at True North came up with a nifty little uh opinion article today about the CBC and how he said
00:09:32.580 that they branded the CBC branded itself liberal during the election uh Graham did a good job of
00:09:37.700 just kind of going through the individual instances of you know CBC's very obvious liberal bias and
00:09:46.520 I think he did a great job so I will put a link to Graham's article in the description below but I
00:09:53.380 you know it kind of reminded me of some of the worst instances you know it was really interesting
00:09:58.720 because the the last couple days of the campaign we saw the media really kind of losing its patience
00:10:06.440 and getting incredibly frustrated with Andrew Scheer they accused him of lying they accused him of making
00:10:12.340 things up particularly when he mentioned that the liberals would probably have to raise the GST in
00:10:17.460 order to pay for all their promises you you basically saw them acting like political activists here this
00:10:23.540 this isn't CBC this is from global play a clip of a global host using this line of reasoning
00:10:28.200 Mr Scheer when asked why you're spreading false information about your opponents like among other false
00:10:34.500 statements saying the liberals will decriminalize hard drugs and saying the liberals and NDP will raise GST when
00:10:40.660 they say that's a lie you can't draw conclusions where the hard facts don't back up what you're
00:10:45.140 saying so you've explained your reasoning to Canadians my question to you this morning is how
00:10:49.540 do you explain to your five children from toddler to teenage that it is okay to lead a dirty campaign
00:10:54.900 based on information that is not entirely true and constant attacks on your opponents I mean that
00:11:00.900 was just sort of like unhinged like the way that she directed that question and I don't think
00:11:05.620 she handled it very well if I was sure I would have been angry like how dare you invoke my children in this
00:11:09.860 question you know why aren't you asking Justin Trudeau why he lied about SNC-Lavalin why aren't you
00:11:14.100 asking Justin Trudeau why he lied about this why he lied about that you know they jump on the
00:11:18.420 conservatives and accuse them of kind of the worst things but then they they completely ignore when
00:11:24.260 the liberals do it and then they do it themselves so basically Trudeau and the liberals created this
00:11:30.100 narrative that Andrew Scheer was an extreme SOCON with a hidden agenda on gay marriage and abortion and
00:11:36.100 then they spent the entire campaign talking about that now there was no there was no shred of truth
00:11:41.780 to that in that Scheer never talked about it Scheer never said I'm going to legislate on these things
00:11:47.060 so when the liberals created the idea that that this was something that was happening in the background
00:11:52.500 and Scheer said no that's not true then using the same standard the liberals the media should have said
00:11:58.660 no she she said that that's not true let's move on right because because when when the conservatives
00:12:05.780 accuse the liberals of raising taxes all the liberals have to say is no that's not true and then everyone
00:12:11.060 in the media starts defending a liberal saying well no they said they're not going to raise taxes they
00:12:15.140 said they're not going to raise taxes they said they're not going to raise taxes why doesn't that
00:12:18.100 same standard apply for Andrew Scheer he said he's not going to legislate on social issues so you know
00:12:23.780 they put to bed immediately the idea that Trudeau is not going to raise taxes even though any idiot
00:12:29.700 can look at the government's spending promises and realize that there's no way they can afford them
00:12:35.300 and we can also look back at the last four years to say that the liberals just don't keep their promises
00:12:40.100 when it comes to spending and deficits because look at the out-of-control deficits and Trudeau promised
00:12:45.620 that those would be gone so you know there's just this complete double standard the concern the media are
00:12:52.180 allowed to question and question and question and question and push and push and use hearsay and
00:12:56.340 use innuendo and use rumors and unfounded rumors when it comes to sheer and conservatives and social
00:13:02.900 issues but if anyone does that to Trudeau the the media act is like his personal you know press agent
00:13:09.940 saying like no no that's not what Trudeau believes that's not what Trudeau said and so you know we have
00:13:16.580 obviously a lot of examples of that but then there's also just a sort of uncomfortable chumminess
00:13:22.020 remember this this is from pretty early in the campaign justin Trudeau buys a reporter from cbc
00:13:29.380 poutine in front of all the cameras and jokes that the liberals always support the cbc let's play that clip
00:13:34.740 and graham points out in his piece you know even if the cbc officially followed their own journalistic
00:13:54.180 standards and practices you know they're supposed to avoid real or perceived conflicts of interest so
00:14:00.820 you know just the imagery there the symbolism of a journalist laughing and chumming with the liberals
00:14:06.820 as they talk about how they take care of each other is just obviously not good i won't go into the whole
00:14:12.820 lawsuit thing because i spent most of the podcast talking about that last time but you know there
00:14:18.340 there really is just uh example after example of the cbc showing their bias oh this is just one more
00:14:25.860 example that i find amusing so i don't know if you remember but uh maybe halfway through the campaign
00:14:33.220 uh katie simpson tweeted out about how um andrew sheer just tripped walking into an event and how
00:14:41.140 it was so embarrassing for him and he's probably gonna um regret it happening especially because she uh
00:14:47.460 assumed that the pool cameras had caught it that there was no camera that caught it so we don't know if
00:14:52.900 andrew sheer actually did trip you just have to take katie simpson's word for that reporter cbc reporter
00:14:57.700 katie simpson um but then near the end of the campaign justin true actually did trip he was fall he
00:15:03.940 was walking into an event and he tripped and it was caught on camera and the cbc never mentioned it so
00:15:10.980 you know that's pretty minor but still the idea that when something bad happens this year the cbc is
00:15:17.060 there with a megaphone to amplify it when something embarrassing and bad happens to trudeau
00:15:22.340 the cbc just pretends it doesn't exist until it goes away and that pretty much is a metaphor that
00:15:27.620 sums up their coverage of the entire campaign uh the only silver lining i think about it is that
00:15:32.900 it was pretty it was so transparent how biased they were that i think it became obvious to more and more
00:15:38.020 canadians you know people who watch the news closely people like me and people like you who
00:15:42.180 watch news closely know that the cbc is very very biased but maybe you know the typical canadian that
00:15:47.140 doesn't consume as much political news as you or i do uh wouldn't know i i think more and more
00:15:52.900 people became very obvious during this campaign that the cbc is just incredibly biased and act in
00:15:58.660 bad faith towards conservatives and i think that the more people who are aware of that and who watch
00:16:03.860 it and who file complaints um the better it will be because people will either pressure the cbc into
00:16:09.140 changing their practices or people will just stop tuning in to the mainstream media which has happened in
00:16:15.060 the u.s which is why it doesn't matter what cnn says about donald trump because um you know a
00:16:21.060 certain segment of the population just doesn't trust the mainstream media anymore so they don't care what
00:16:25.780 cnn and others have to say more and more people in canada just do not care what the cbc has to say okay
00:16:32.580 guys i'm gonna leave it at that thank you so much for tuning in this week and like i said hopefully
00:16:37.700 we'll be back up and running in our studio next week uh i'm gonna do another pitch for true north we've
