00:00:00.000 Welcome everyone to Ratioed. My name is Harrison Faulkner. Well, if any of you have spent any time
00:00:12.680 on Twitter over the last few weeks, you've likely come across the trending hashtag Canada
00:00:17.320 is broken. Mostly because these two keep going back and forth about it.
00:00:30.000 The reality is most of us watching right now could go outside and could very quickly be confronted
00:00:36.680 with the sad state of our country. Go for a stroll down your local big city street, go for a stroll
00:00:41.620 in your local grocery store aisle, or just take a look at your bank account. Now, although things
00:00:45.720 could be worse, as they could always be worse, I think it's pretty safe to say that the Canada
00:00:49.720 we're living in is not the same Canada that gets sold around the world as a rosy paradise. Legacy
00:00:55.500 media pollsters are now asking Canadians that same question, is Canada broken? And the polling
00:01:00.940 results, if you haven't seen them already, may surprise you. Stick around, we've got legacy
00:01:05.060 media polling results, legacy media news reports, video clips, and of course, back and forth between
00:01:10.480 Justin Trudeau and Pierre Polyev. Drop a like in the video, help us out by subscribing to the
00:01:14.680 TrueNearth YouTube channel, and the comment question, as you all could have guessed, is Canada broken?
00:01:19.720 Let me know, and let's get into it. So take a look at the latest Leger polling results published in
00:01:24.760 the National Post over the weekend. Here's the headline, 67% agree Canada is broken, and here's
00:01:31.060 why. Canadians say their government is increasingly out of step with the issues that matter to them.
00:01:36.160 The first time we heard the phrase, it was simply a great soundbite. Canada is broken. Months later,
00:01:42.000 the hashtag count keeps climbing, and the phrase has become something of a battle cry. With all the
00:01:47.280 noise, our team at Leger asked Canadians if the assertion resonates with them. We were somewhat
00:01:52.040 taken aback to learn that 67% of Canadians agree with the statement. It feels like everything is
00:01:58.340 broken in this country right now. It's one thing when a sentiment is a catchy sparring point between
00:02:02.900 party leaders and pundits, but quite another when two-thirds of Canadians agree. So that is how two
00:02:09.220 Leger pollsters summarize the data in a National Post article. But if you go to the poll itself,
00:02:14.820 the data becomes a lot more interesting. There's a lot more here to break down.
00:02:18.060 So here are the highlights of this survey. So 67% of Canadians agree with the statement made
00:02:23.060 by a Canadian politician who stated that it feels like everything is broken in this country right
00:02:27.040 now. Do you ever feel like everything's broken in Canada? 50% of Canadians are angry with the way
00:02:32.980 Canada is being managed today. 68% of Canadians report that rising costs and inflation or interest
00:02:39.640 rates are most important when it comes to the issues impacting them and their families. And 37% of
00:02:45.120 Canadians believe that the state of health care is the issue that governments and decision makers in
00:02:49.960 their province are focused on the most. Now these results do not spell good news for Justin Trudeau
00:02:55.320 or the Liberals. In fact, quite the opposite. But it is important to mention that not all Canadians are
00:02:59.860 taking these results at face value. A lot of Liberals are calling into question the methodology of the
00:03:05.100 survey. And it is important to mention that this is not a poll, but rather a survey. And Leger describes the
00:03:09.940 methodology this way. A web survey was conducted among 1500 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, via
00:03:16.280 Leger's online panel, LEO. The data was collected from January 20th to 22nd, 2023. So just a week or two ago.
00:03:24.060 Now the methodology of the survey doesn't mean you can just cast aside the data and say it's not representative
00:03:28.860 of where the country's at right now. Because if you were to look at other polling companies, you would see that they have the
00:03:34.060 Conservatives pulling away from the Liberals. That to me would indicate that Canadians aren't so happy
00:03:38.680 with where the country is headed. Nano's research and abacus data have the Conservatives pulling ahead of
00:03:43.200 the Liberals by 8 points. Main Street Research and 338 both have the Conservatives up 4 points. But that
00:03:49.560 didn't stop Mark Gerritsen from embarrassing himself once again this week on Twitter with a hilarious
00:03:54.760 self-own. Take a look at this. In response to Pierre Polyev sharing the Leger survey results and slamming the
00:04:01.240 Trudeau government, Mark Gerritsen wrote this. Hate to break it to you buddy, but the National Post has
00:04:05.960 been driving this narrative long before you decided to steal it. Then he takes a screenshot of a National
00:04:10.800 Post article from 2020 with the headline, Canada is broken, say majority of Canadians in poll taken in
00:04:17.020 wake of rail blockades. Now Mark here was unable to realize that what he's really publishing is that
00:04:22.320 Canadians for many years have felt this country is broken, have felt that this government is leading
00:04:26.680 them down the wrong path. Not just this year, but since 2020. Well, as you all could have guessed,
00:04:31.680 the comments under Mark's swing and a miss at Pierre Polyev are quite hilarious.
00:04:35.400 Actually, we broke the country years before you brought it up. Mark, it is refreshing to see you
00:04:40.180 participate in a crystal clear reflection and self-help. Transparency is rare these days.
00:04:45.220 This isn't the burn you think it is, champ. At the end of last year, Justin Trudeau had simply had
00:04:49.900 enough of Pierre Polyev saying Canada was broken and he decided to fire back. While speaking to a room full of
00:04:55.800 liberal MPs, liberal staffers and liberal lobbyists. Mr. Polyev might choose to undermine our democracy 0.79
00:05:01.980 by amplifying conspiracy theories. He might decide to run away from journalists when they ask him
00:05:09.080 tough questions. That's how he brands himself and that's his choice. But when he says that Canada
00:05:16.840 is broken, that's where we draw the line. This is Canada.
00:05:30.840 And in Canada, better is always possible. But I don't accept Canadians and politicians that talk down our country.
00:05:39.840 Let me be very clear for the record. Canada is not broken.
00:05:55.840 And if you're Justin Trudeau, if you're a liberal MP, that's all you really can do.
00:05:59.460 All you can do these days is just keep repeating the line, Canada is not broken, while praying to God
00:06:04.820 that Canadians aren't paying attention to out-of-control crime.
00:06:08.100 Yet another attack on the TTC is sending shockwaves throughout the city.
00:06:12.420 This time, police say a suspect stabbed a woman in her 20s in the face and in the head
00:06:17.040 while she was riding the subway, the streetcar this afternoon.
00:06:20.140 Rampant homelessness.
00:06:21.480 A long-time homeless advocate says he's never seen the situation so dire in the Fraser Valley.
00:06:27.620 He says the number of people living on the streets and in camps has been increasing.
00:06:31.820 And he expects it's only going to get worse.
00:06:35.380 An opioid epidemic stealing the lives of our young population.
00:06:39.220 2,272 British Columbians were killed by toxic drugs in 2022.
00:06:45.620 Slightly fewer than the record-breaking year before.
00:06:49.060 First Nations people are dying at a rate five times higher than the total population.
00:06:54.420 Crumbling transportation infrastructure.
00:06:57.040 Rated number one for all the wrong reasons.
00:07:00.060 Canada recognized on the world stage for flight delays and cancellations.
00:07:05.060 Good evening.
00:07:05.700 Travelers call it a nightmare.
00:07:07.380 Forced to wait for hours, even days on end.
00:07:10.260 Tonight we're learning the situation here is among the worst in the world.
00:07:14.020 Unaffordable and out-of-reach housing prices.
00:07:16.360 This is a house in Toronto.
00:07:18.080 It has two bedrooms and one bathroom.
00:07:21.160 It was listed for sale last summer for just shy of $1 million.
00:07:25.020 If that seems like a lot, you should know that it's sold for $800,000 more than that.
00:07:31.860 Grocery prices.
00:07:33.340 As sky-high grocery prices take a big bite out of shoppers' bank accounts,
00:07:38.460 it appears more people are resorting to supermarket shoplifting.
00:07:42.140 Inflation.
00:07:42.740 Inflation in Canada has hit 8.1%, higher than at any time since 1983.
00:07:49.520 But that rise in costs is not hitting everything everywhere at the same rate.
00:07:54.540 Depending on what you're buying, you could be seeing costs increase much more than 8.1%.
00:07:59.980 Healthcare collapse.
00:08:01.660 Healthcare workers across the country are warning that our system is past the verge of collapse.
00:08:06.780 In Ontario, 25 hospitals across the province were forced to close because of staffing shortages.
00:08:12.080 Depleted military.
00:08:13.800 Permanent residents can now apply to join the Canadian Armed Forces.
00:08:17.660 This follows warnings from the Canadian Military Senior Command about staffing issues
00:08:21.500 and overall readiness in the face of foreign conflicts and domestic disasters.
00:08:26.280 And a labor shortage.
00:08:27.440 The Business Council of Alberta says employers are having trouble filling positions across the board,
00:08:32.520 from energy to agriculture, with labor shortages most acute in hospitality.
00:08:37.120 So as long as you aren't paying attention to any one of those issues,
00:08:40.420 well, Canada's just perfect then.
00:08:41.700 And that is exactly what Pierre Paulyev honed in on in his caucus speech last week.
00:08:46.420 Look around you.
00:08:48.240 Crime is raging out of control in our streets.
00:08:51.100 Our people are desperate that they'll have to lose their homes because of rising inflation
00:08:55.460 and interest rates the government promised would never happen.
00:09:00.120 People are losing loved ones at record rates to violent crime and drug overdoses.
00:09:06.680 And families who've been locked down for two years because of COVID are now locked down at airports when they try to get away for a small vacation.
00:09:16.200 Everything feels broken.
00:09:18.820 Oh, I just offended Justin Trudeau.
00:09:21.920 He gets very angry when I talk about these problems.
00:09:25.600 He thinks that if we don't speak about them out loud, that Canadians will forget that they exist.
00:09:31.060 He said this to me in a very angry speech right before Christmas where he told 2,000 liberal lobbyists and political staffers and consultants who had paid $500 to listen to him speak that Canadians have never had it so good.
00:09:49.880 And you know what?
00:09:52.220 For the people in that room, he's absolutely right.
00:09:56.180 They have never had it so good.
00:09:58.740 And just to show you how not broken Canada is, take a look at this video from a citizen journalist driving through downtown Vancouver.
00:10:05.940 Pierre Paulyev called this hell on earth.
00:10:08.940 You tell me how you would describe this video.
00:10:19.880 Reminder to also let me know in the comments what you think.
00:10:32.560 Is Canada broken?
00:10:34.480 All right, that's going to do it for us today on the show.
00:10:36.320 Thank you so much for tuning in.
00:10:37.760 My name is Harrison Faulkner and this is Ratio.
00:10:40.560 We'll see you next time.
