00:00:00.400 Hashtag welcome to Canada, remember that?
00:00:03.220 Yeah, it seems like ages ago now.
00:00:04.720 That was Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's giant welcome sign
00:00:07.540 to what would eventually become tens of thousands of illegal border crossers.
00:00:11.700 Now, it's only been since last April, so a year and a few months ago,
00:00:16.040 that the federal government started tracking what has now been over 32,000 illegal border crossers
00:00:21.920 just walking into Canada, despite the act that basically says
00:00:26.200 if you're in the United States, you can't seek asylum in Canada
00:00:29.400 if you cross legally.
00:00:31.440 Well, we've talked about that a fair bit before,
00:00:33.820 but now there's a chilling set of statistics that's been published by the Toronto Star to its credit,
00:00:38.900 and that is that of all of these illegal border crossers, just 398 have been deported.
00:00:46.000 Now, this by no means is telling us that all but 398 have been granted asylum.
00:00:51.060 In fact, there have actually been a significant number of asylum claim rejections in this,
00:00:56.680 thousands as a matter of fact.
00:00:58.180 We don't have the numbers up to today, but we're probably at about the 9,000 or 10,000 range,
00:01:03.280 and that's only of the cases that have been heard and determined.
00:01:06.200 There's a giant backlog here.
00:01:08.160 But of the thousands of asylum claims that have been rejected,
00:01:11.200 just 398 have actually been deported,
00:01:14.340 which means we have people who are not supposed to be in Canada
00:01:17.860 that the government may or may not be tracking.
00:01:20.540 And given how often we hear about how underfunded and understaffed the border agencies are,
00:01:25.140 I would think it's probably a fair assumption to say that there is not tracking being done
00:01:29.940 on the people who are determined to have not just entered Canada illegally,
00:01:33.280 but are not eligible to remain here as asylum seekers, as any sort of claimant in that area.
00:01:39.800 And this is, I think, underscoring what people like me have been sounding the alarm about for months
00:01:45.060 and for over a year now, in fact, which is that we have had now a refugee influx or an asylum influx
00:01:50.880 that has gotten to the point where we can't possibly manage it.
00:01:54.600 And I don't see any signs of this slowing down,
00:01:57.120 despite Canada having a new minister responsible for border security.
00:02:01.320 Bill Blair, Canada's new minister of border security, doesn't seem to be anywhere on the issue.
00:02:05.300 In fact, the agencies and boards responsible, the Immigration and Refugee Asylum Board,
00:02:10.920 the Canadian Border Services Agency, none of these groups actually report to Bill Blair.
00:02:16.200 So what are we doing to, first off, stop the influx,
00:02:19.640 and secondly, deal with the ejection of people from Canada that don't belong in Canada?
00:02:24.640 The government has been completely silent on that,
00:02:27.200 which once again shows us how much of a sham the border crisis is to the Liberals.
00:02:31.900 For the True North Initiative, I'm Andrew Lutton.
