00:00:00.000 Did Prime Minister Justin Trudeau break his government's own rules by visiting his family
00:00:10.060 over the Easter long weekend? He sure did. But remarkably, many Canadians don't seem to believe
00:00:16.440 it. When I posted this message on social media on Monday morning, it caused quite the stir,
00:00:22.240 to say the least. Mainstream media journalists and partisan liberals on Twitter were quick
00:00:27.400 to refute my claim. And many suggested that I was being unfair and that I was wrong. So let's set
00:00:33.840 the record straight, shall we? What rules did Trudeau break? Well, first off his background,
00:00:39.360 Justin Trudeau has been staying alone at Rideau Cottage, which is a home on the property of
00:00:43.840 24 Sussex in Ottawa since March 29th. That is when his wife, Sophie Trudeau, tested negative for
00:00:50.980 coronavirus after previously having the disease. And that's when she and her three kids packed up
00:00:56.740 and moved to Harrington Lake, Quebec, the official country residence of the Prime Minister.
00:01:03.280 So in order for Trudeau to travel to Quebec to his country residence to see his family and stay with
00:01:09.240 his family, Trudeau broke the following rules. Number one, he crossed a provincial boundary and
00:01:15.920 entered Quebec. So after telling Canadians not to travel, after telling Canadians to stay at home,
00:01:22.000 Trudeau himself packed up his bags and headed for his country residence in rural Quebec. He crossed a
00:01:28.580 provincial border into Quebec in order to do that, despite that border being closed. Gatineau police
00:01:35.680 set up checkpoints on interprovincial roadways last Wednesday in an unprecedented effort to enforce
00:01:41.860 the province's new ban on non-essential travel into western Quebec. Now, sure, it's only about 35
00:01:48.620 kilometers between the two residents, but Trudeau had to cross a boundary that was closed to other
00:01:54.680 Canadians. Gatineau police said checkpoints were set up at bridges, ferries, and major intersections,
00:02:00.640 and that drivers could be fined up to $6,000 for trying to make non-essential trips. Trudeau and his
00:02:09.780 motorcade were let right through, while other families trying to do the exact same thing were turned away.
00:02:16.540 Number two, Trudeau went to a cottage. Justin Trudeau's top public health official, Dr. Theresa Tam,
00:02:24.180 has stressed on multiple occasions for Canadians not to travel to their cottage, cabin, camp, or rural home
00:02:30.660 because of the potential strain on health care in smaller rural communities. This is a quote from
00:02:37.000 Twitter from Dr. Theresa Tam. COVID time is not cottage time. Stay home and resist the urge to head to the
00:02:44.460 cottage or rural setting. Don't add further strain on communities with less capacity to manage COVID-19.
00:02:51.100 Do your part, flatten the curve, plank the curve. So Canadians, you can't go to your cottage. Justin Trudeau,
00:02:57.900 go right ahead. Number three, Trudeau visited family who don't live with him. Justin Trudeau has told us on many
00:03:06.920 occasions that he lives in one household, Rideau Cottage, and that his family lives in another,
00:03:11.880 Harrington Lake. But according to his government's own rules, they should have celebrated Easter digitally
00:03:18.600 through social media or through Skype or Zoom. Here are just a handful of the many examples of Trudeau
00:03:25.560 government officials telling Canadians that they cannot visit family members living in other households.
00:03:31.240 The CBC report specifically says, and I quote, physical distancing means not interacting with anyone
00:03:39.320 outside of your household, including immediate family members and significant others who don't
00:03:45.800 live with you, unquote. Here are just a handful more Trudeau officials telling Canadians not to do
00:03:52.040 exactly what Justin Trudeau did. Dr. Theresa Tam, the choice of where to be home in your bubble with
00:03:59.160 existing household members only has never been clearer. Again, Dr. Theresa Tam, now is the critical
00:04:07.000 time to maintain our physical distancing. This means having dinners and celebrating with household
00:04:12.920 members only and connecting with others virtually over phone, email, and video chat. Dr. Theresa Tam,
00:04:20.520 physical distancing and not being able to gather together is difficult. Thank you for celebrating
00:04:26.120 virtually virtually and at home with members of your household to slow the spread of coronavirus.
00:04:32.760 Deputy Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Howard New, unfortunately, any religious celebrations this
00:04:39.800 year will have to be strictly limited to your existing household members only. Dr. Theresa Tam, this means
00:04:48.680 dinners and celebrations will need to be strictly limited to your existing household members only. So you
00:04:57.800 can't visit your family unless they live in the same household, but those rules don't apply to Trudeau.
00:05:03.720 Number four, Trudeau's wife Sophie posted photos of Justin Trudeau and his family doing an outdoor Easter egg hunt
00:05:11.320 together after Justin Trudeau had specifically told Canadians not to go outside and specifically
00:05:19.240 to do their Easter egg hunts indoors. You'll have to stay home. You'll have to Skype that big family dinner
00:05:27.160 and the Easter egg hunt, well, it'll have to happen around the house instead of around the neighborhood.
00:05:32.520 And finally, number five, Justin Trudeau left his house. He went outside and he enjoyed the great outdoors.
00:05:40.760 Just days after telling Canadians the exact opposite, to stay inside, to not leave their homes and to not
00:05:48.200 go out into public parks this weekend. But you know what? Rules like these are for the little people.
00:05:55.480 Trudeau likes to say we're all in this together, but he doesn't seem willing to follow the same set
00:05:59.800 of rules that he demands that we follow. Perhaps the worst part of all of this is that everyday Canadians
00:06:05.720 are getting ridiculous and exorbitant fines, frankly, for doing far less than what Justin Trudeau himself
00:06:12.200 did. And equally as bad, rather than fielding tough questions from the media and having to answer for
00:06:18.200 his hypocrisy, so many journalists in the mainstream media were falling over themselves to defend Justin
00:06:25.480 Trudeau and to attack me, a journalist, simply for asking the wrong questions. All of these people
00:06:33.640 are doing a disservice to Canada. For True North, I'm Candice Maltham.
