As more and more provinces in Canada reopen, the battle shifts to a new metric: which provinces are adopting so-called "vaccine passports" that require citizens to prove they ve been vaccinated against the 1918 flu pandemic. But what's the point of such a passport unless it leads to the creation of a two-tier of citizenship based on vaccination levels?

00:00:00.000 as more and more provinces in canada reopen the battle has shifted to a new metric which is which
00:00:12.200 provinces are adopting so-called vaccine passports provinces like quebec and manitoba have already
00:00:18.900 gone down this road issuing certification that their citizens can use to prove they've been
00:00:24.620 vaccinated against COVID-19 now what point is there for such a vaccine passport unless the plan
00:00:31.860 is to start restricting certain aspects of civil society and certain services from people who are 0.69
00:00:37.700 not vaccinated the stratification of society based on vaccination level is an egregious violation of
00:00:44.540 your right to make your own medical decisions but also your right to not have to disclose those
00:00:49.640 medical conditions to strangers just take a look at ontario seneca college a post-secondary
00:00:55.160 institution has announced vaccination will be required for all students who want to take classes
00:01:00.800 in person in september not just students living in residence not just students who might have a
00:01:05.760 placement at a long-term care home but any student who wants to study at the school if you're not
00:01:10.580 vaccinated you don't get to go there there have also been some individual businesses that have gone down
00:01:15.900 this road requiring their customers to be vaccinated justin trudeau for his part has said that he will
00:01:22.460 leave it to the provinces to decide for themselves if they want a domestic passport for provincial reasons
00:01:28.780 for inter-provincial travel for provincial service providing or for anything else this means that the
00:01:34.220 battle now shifts to the premiers of various provinces jason kenney for his part has come out with the
00:01:40.300 strongest position saying in no uncertain terms there will be no vaccine passport in alberta whatsoever
00:01:47.020 what's your position of vaccine passports for those individuals unwilling to be vaccinated opposed and
00:01:51.820 we've been very clear from the beginning that we will not facilitate or accept vaccine passports and 0.55
00:01:56.460 that in fact we regard i believe that they would in principle contravene the health information act and
00:02:03.900 also possibly the freedom of information and protection of privacy act decisive and clear which is quite
00:02:09.980 frankly something we've been missing a lot of from politicians and leaders during the covid 19 pandemic
00:02:16.220 he went further than that by the way and said that he would even not cooperate with any other level of
00:02:22.780 government including the federal government that wanted to impose a vaccine passport that was before
00:02:27.980 justin trudeau decided to kick that hot potato away from his desk by saying oh no no it's just a provincial matter
00:02:34.460 vaccine certification for international travel is inevitable i've said this before other countries are
00:02:41.580 going to have these requirements and if you don't like them you don't go to those countries but where we
00:02:46.620 do have a say is what we do in canada we already have from the federal government justin trudeau saying
00:02:52.460 that the border will remain closed to unvaccinated people for quite some time referring to tourists not
00:02:58.620 referring to citizens but the reality is if we start in society that is supposedly reopened laying out
00:03:06.700 all these standards and all these rules that only vaccinated people are allowed to do certain things
00:03:11.100 we're very quickly going to go down a road from which there is no returning any flu season any future
00:03:17.500 pandemic any other crisis will now become a two-tier of citizenship there's the vaccinated level and the
00:03:24.060 unvaccinated level and you have to disclose to everyone around you which group you fall into
00:03:29.660 and this is not coming by the way from someone who is anti-vaccine not at all this is coming from
00:03:34.860 someone who believes individuals are best suited to make their own medical decisions why does the
00:03:40.220 headmaster of your school need to know if you're vaccinated why does the person you want to buy bread
00:03:44.860 from at the local bakery need to know the short answer is they don't if we in society have had to
00:03:50.860 endure massive lockdowns because it's more important to look at the status of everyone
00:03:55.580 over individual risk levels then why are we not doing the same on vaccines why are we reversing this
00:04:01.980 egalitarian approach where everyone's in misery together and now saying that no no only certain
00:04:07.500 people get to benefit from the province's reopenings when everyone was part of the lockdowns
00:04:12.460 that preceded them for true north i'm andrew lawton
