Juno News - Trudeau’s April fools joke will be on Canadians

00:00:00.000 you're tuned in to the andrew lawton show

00:00:05.920 let's talk about really what's all happening here specifically on monday franco terrazano

00:00:14.080 federal director for the canadian taxpayers federation uh joins us once again april 1st

00:00:19.560 is a big day not a good one for taxpayers though is it franco what what's happening that day first

00:00:24.540 off because it's hard to keep track of it all well april fool's day hey and like so many other

00:00:30.200 times taxpayers are the punch line in ottawa okay you've got carbon tax going up alcohol taxes going

00:00:37.020 up and member of parliament pay going up so you're going to pay higher prices at the pumps you're

00:00:42.600 going to pay higher prices when you go to the bar and restaurant and your tax bill is going up to fund

00:00:48.400 even more bloated salaries of our members of parliament so a bad day to be a taxpayer let me

00:00:53.240 tell you yeah and i i wanted to ask a little bit about the momentum here i i know there are some

00:00:59.820 rallies well not some i mean quite a large number of rallies and these mini convoys that are being

00:01:04.220 uh planned for monday uh pierre polyev himself has been bringing out thousands to his axe the tax spike

00:01:10.400 the hike uh events and whatnot i know uh your colleague chris sims i think actually right now

00:01:15.620 or in like 30 minutes is doing a press conference in alberta so there is a groundswell here it's just

00:01:20.620 not translating into action at the one level of government that can do something about this

00:01:24.840 well and that's at their own peril right if liberal mps and ndp mps want to keep voting to raise people's

00:01:31.420 carbon taxes that's at their own peril because here's the thing canadians are absolutely united

00:01:36.760 against these carbon tax hikes canadians are sick and tired of the federal government not only making

00:01:42.420 our lives more expensive but making the necessities of our lives more expensive canada is a big place

00:01:48.500 you know people have to fuel up their car to get to work well the carbon tax makes that more expensive

00:01:53.420 canada is a cold place people have to heat their homes well the carbon tax makes that more expensive

00:01:59.720 and one more point right we all know that the grocery prices are high well let's think about

00:02:04.580 that for a second because the carbon tax will cost canadian farmers a billion dollars by 2030

00:02:09.960 so the carbon tax makes it more expensive for farmers to grow food it makes it more expensive for

00:02:15.840 truckers to deliver the food and it's also making it more expensive for canadians to afford food right

00:02:21.880 so canadians absolutely united against this carbon tax not only canadians but also provincial politicians

00:02:27.680 of all political stripes so the only ones who are tone deaf and late to the party

00:02:32.060 are trudeau his ministers his liberal mps and also ndp mps

00:02:37.880 let me let me ask you here franco about the really the two bits of information that the government has

00:02:46.780 been giving to sell the tax that i i feel are confusing to canadians and i'm hoping you have

00:02:51.580 the numbers on this number one most canadians are better off with the tax than without it now that on

00:02:56.760 the surface sounds ridiculous but the government touts this rebate and says no no most canadians are

00:03:01.600 getting more in the rebate than they're paying so that's claim one uh claim two that all of the

00:03:07.320 experts agree the carbon tax is not a significant driver of inflation it's just one you know itsy

00:03:12.500 bitsy tiny teeny little fraction of inflation and not a significant driver go all right i'm getting

00:03:19.500 the football and i'm going for a run ladies and gentlemen so on the rebates er wrong magic math okay

00:03:24.900 now i think i heard the prime minister say something along the lines that the premiers are spreading

00:03:29.440 misinformation well there is a bunch of misinformation but that is coming from prime minister

00:03:34.340 justin trudeau his cabinet ministers and his liberal mps because the parliamentary budget officer

00:03:40.680 the government's own independent non-partisan budget watchdog shows that the carbon tax will cost

00:03:46.680 the average canadian family up to 911 more a year than what they get back in rebates hundreds of dollars

00:03:55.760 more a year than what they get back in rebates well let's just set that data aside for a second okay

00:04:00.600 let's just think about it logically they charge a carbon tax then they charge their sales tax on top

00:04:06.040 of the carbon tax that tax on tax alone cost canadians about 500 million dollars this year

00:04:11.520 and then it costs the government about 200 million dollars to hire the bureaucrats to administer the

00:04:18.780 carbon tax so there is no way that a government can impose a carbon tax charge its sales tax on top of

00:04:25.480 the carbon tax skim a bunch of money off the top to pay for a bunch of bureaucrats and somehow make

00:04:31.240 the vast majority of canadians better off with rebates that is impossible but andrew only a couple

00:04:38.360 months ago by his own actions trudeau proved that the carbon tax does make life more expensive remember

00:04:44.600 he was surrounded by his atlantic caucus and he announced relief by taking the carbon tax off of

00:04:50.680 furnace oil now why would he do that because he knows that the carbon tax does make life more

00:04:57.800 expensive now andrew that's the rebate shenanigans busted let's talk about this letter from the

00:05:04.200 economist well you hear economists talk about efficiency all the time well andrew it doesn't

00:05:10.040 sound that efficient to me to make it more expensive for canadian parents to fuel up their cars to get their

00:05:16.040 kids to soccer practice with attacks that won't solve a global issue it doesn't sound efficient to

00:05:22.600 me to make it more expensive for canadian seniors to stay warm during the winter months with attacks

00:05:29.240 that won't solve a global issue it doesn't sound very efficient to me to make it more expensive for

00:05:36.600 a canadian single mom to put food on the table with attacks that won't solve a global issue and not only 1.00

00:05:44.600 that you know who trudeau should actually be listening to the people he's supposed to represent

00:05:50.360 canadians and the vast majority of canadians do not support his carbon tax hikes so he should listen

00:05:56.840 to canadians and at the very least he should cancel the carbon tax hike all right april 1st are you

00:06:03.240 going to be out in the streets as well on monday well we're hey we're going to be so busy all we're

00:06:09.400 doing is talking carbon tax alcohol tax mp pay raise you know you talked about chris simms doing

00:06:14.760 a press conference today i did a press conference in ottawa today and i know a lot of my colleagues

00:06:19.320 all across canada are going to continue to bang the drum with press conferences of their own

00:06:23.800 all right well we look forward to that as well have a great long weekend and enjoy the little bit

00:06:28.280 more affordability you get between now and monday i guess that's the have a little tax-free rumspringa

00:06:33.320 this weekend uh franco terrazano always good to talk to you sir have a good weekend thanks andrew
