00:00:00.000 This morning you appeared on stage with Malaysian Communications Minister Singh Deo.
00:00:04.940 Back in September, he took aim at the London-based publisher of Malaysia Today,
00:00:09.880 saying that Malaysia needs to have online speech laws that actually are, in his words,
00:00:14.600 extraterritorial, so able to prosecute outside of Malaysia.
00:00:18.180 Do you think that squares with the tone and tenor of his participation in this conference and this conference itself?
00:00:24.340 You know, something that we discussed at great length with the UK when it came to this conference
00:00:32.520 and when it came to our approach to participation in the conference was,
00:00:39.540 who are we speaking to and who should be involved?
00:00:46.720 And there again, there is a difficult, there is a thoughtful balance that needs to be struck.
00:00:54.340 I think all of us are very clear that some countries, you know, let me use North Korea as the obvious example,
00:01:02.840 are beyond the pale when it comes to having a real discussion of media freedom.
00:01:08.640 But I think all of us need to also appreciate that there is work for all of us to do.
00:01:16.920 I met earlier today with a Jamaican foreign minister, a great friend of Canada's,
00:01:22.740 and I congratulated her on the fact that Jamaica is number eight on the media freedom list.
00:01:30.420 Canada is proud of our place at number 18, but we're behind Jamaica,
00:01:34.340 so that shows that we have work to do at home.
00:01:37.200 I'm pleased to say we are ahead of the UK.
00:01:39.300 I think that they're at 33, so we can be proud of that.
00:01:46.540 But the point is that this is not meant to be a group of angels and a group of countries that are perfect.
00:01:55.620 What it is meant to be is a group of countries that are, and not just the attendance,
00:02:01.640 the attendance is open, and I'm actually quite happy to have people who don't believe in media freedom
00:02:08.960 be here to listen to us and have an opportunity to hear why we think it's important.
00:02:14.120 But in terms of the group of countries, for example, signing on to our media pledge,
00:02:19.100 the group of countries on a stage, it's not meant to be a gathering of angels.
00:02:23.060 It's what it is meant to be, or of saints.
00:02:26.080 It's meant to be a gathering of countries that sincerely appreciate the importance of media freedom
00:02:33.240 and, crucially, sincerely believe in the value of working hard to get better.
00:02:41.020 And I think in introducing the Malaysian minister,
00:02:44.220 Secretary Hunt was very clear that that was the reason that the invitation had been extended to Malaysia.
00:02:53.060 Thank you.
