00:16:10.800I think we have four pillars. We have the education pillar, where we give access to English classes,
00:16:20.800computer classes, Bitcoin education. Like, you know, that is our, our, our, our pillar in
00:16:27.800education, and we have the, the recreation pillar, where kids need to have fun, you know, need
00:16:33.800to enjoy, have quality time, and this quality time can look like different for, for everyone,
00:16:39.800right? And, and then we have the pillar of technology. Technology is expose kids with the new technologies
00:16:48.800that are coming, like Bitcoin, like programming, like, you know, access to what is coming, what is
00:16:56.800next, you know? And then we have the spirituality part, that the spirituality part is really important
00:17:03.800for, for us. We're a Christian organization, but also understanding and trying to teach kids
00:17:11.800that as you train in your mind, you read, you read for your brain, you do exercise for your
00:17:20.800muscle, you eat healthy for your body, but it's what you do for your soul, you know? And understanding
00:17:27.800that if you are good inside, if you have God, if you have love, you will be able to do more
00:17:33.800for people. And I think it's something that we need to teach, but also for us, you know, not to
00:17:40.800remember that, that the, the happiness is not coming from outside, but a lot of times it
00:17:47.800has to come from your own way of thinking and how you feel, you know? And so that is really
00:17:55.800important. And I think if we want to create kids that are like, like kids that will be the, the future,
00:18:03.800you know, for, for the leaders, for our community, we need to fulfill all these areas, you know,
00:18:11.800like education, Bitcoin education, recreation, you know, spirituality, quality time. And then you
00:18:19.800will have like kids that have different tools in different areas that they can put together these
00:18:24.800tools to do something good for their life. You know, I think El Sante will be the example
00:18:30.800for many ways. I think it's a lot of, a lot of, a lot of communities will took example from
00:18:38.800this. This is grand zero for Bitcoin, you know, but there are like a lot of, we have good surfing,
00:18:45.800we have good community. It's a good mix of expats and, and, and locals. It's a good proof
00:18:53.800of word that how Bitcoin can improve the life of the locals. And I think El Sante
00:19:00.800that will grow a lot in the next, in the next years. And that open opportunities for, for,
00:19:07.800for a lot of, of the locals, you know, in terms of, I would love to see the locals get involved
00:19:13.800in the business, creating products, service, you know, with all, for all the people that
00:19:18.800are coming and, and making our dreams comes true here without have to leave, you know.
00:19:24.800So we're here with Mike Peterson, someone who is very influential in starting Bitcoin
00:19:28.800Beach. You're a part of the team now. Why did you want to start Bitcoin Beach and why here?
00:19:33.800Well, right here, I was living here, had been living here for, actually about a house here
00:19:38.80020 years ago and been living here for the past 10 years. So we're already working in the community.
00:19:42.800And so we saw firsthand a lot of the ways that the current financial system was kind of holding
00:19:47.800people back in El Salvador, just the amount of money they spent trying to receive remittances
00:19:52.800from the U.S., the lack of ability to engage with the banking system, lack of access to capital,
00:19:58.800really no way to invest and save money. And so we felt like by switching to Bitcoin, it would give people
00:20:03.800here a real opportunity to invest in the future and kind of think longer term.
00:20:07.800And we understand that the president of this country used Bitcoin Beach and use the kind of the pilot project
00:20:14.800you guys ran here as inspiration to change the change the laws in the country to embrace Bitcoin.
00:20:20.800What has that change looked like on the ground with people, locals, businesses?
00:20:25.800Yeah, obviously it always makes it easier if the government is, you know, on the same side of you than against you.
00:20:31.800And we don't you know, we've never been someone that puts our faith in government.
00:20:36.800We think Bitcoin is a grassroots effort. But obviously the government here gets it.
00:20:40.800They see the bigger picture. And so they've been very helpful by by coming along.
00:20:44.800And, you know, when they made the pronouncement that it was going to be adopted as legal tender,
00:20:48.800that opened up a lot of opportunities for much broader expansion of what was happening in the small community here.
00:20:54.800And it's brought an influx of capital and investors from around the world.
00:20:58.800And now we're seeing an influx of of expats that are coming.
00:21:01.800They want to kind of build a future here. They're bringing their families.
00:21:03.800And so I feel like it's really kind of cemented El Salvador as as Bitcoin country.
00:21:09.800How have you found the adoption of Bitcoin and using the technology?
00:21:14.800Has it has it been quick or has it been a slow process?
00:21:17.800Because we've we've, you know, paid for waters and other items using Bitcoin while we're here.
00:21:22.800And it seems everybody has picked it up. But how has that been a big learning curve for the locals here?
00:21:27.800Yeah, it's definitely a big learning curve. And it depends where you go in El Salvador.
00:21:30.800I see here in El Zante where Bitcoin Beach started. It's very easy to use Bitcoin.
00:21:34.800There's other places in the country you go where a lot of the stores won't accept Bitcoin.
00:21:38.800And that's something that I expected because changing the whole way you interact with the financial system
00:21:44.800and what you think of as money is something that's like takes time to change.
00:21:48.800And so even for a lot of people in the Bitcoin space, they it took them, you know, five to ten years to really understand Bitcoin
00:21:55.800and the power that it has to kind of transform the monetary system in the world.
00:21:59.800And so we've kind of seen that same in El Salvador. There's early adopters or people who get it early.
00:22:03.800But there's also lots of skeptics or people that they just they don't want to try any something new.
00:22:07.800They you know, they have something that kind of works for them.
00:22:09.800And so it takes them seeing how much better Bitcoin works a lot.
00:22:13.800A lot of times they'll see their friends or they'll see businesses that embraced it the way they're prospering.
00:22:17.800And so then that kind of brings them on board because they're like, oh, you know, I'm going to be left behind here.
00:22:22.800And so, yeah, I think it's something that, you know, early on, I was like, oh, because it didn't happen overnight.
00:22:27.800It was a failure. It's like, no, this is like a decade long transformation.
00:22:30.800And I think we're actually ahead of schedule.
00:22:32.800And do you think that's part of the reason why the country is is getting a lot of attention internationally?
00:22:39.800A lot of people are trying to invest in this country.
00:22:41.800Like what is the what is the big pull that is bringing people to this country to try to buy property, lay down their new lay down new roots?
00:22:50.800What what is it that is pulling people in?
00:22:52.800Yeah, I mean, when they when they adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, they totally turn the narrative about El Salvador on its head before it was known as like murder capital and crime and gangs.
00:23:03.800And all of a sudden it became the country that was embracing a new monetary system, embracing technology.
00:23:08.800And not only that, you had all these reporters descending on El Salvador, you know, doing stories about it.
00:23:15.800And even the ones that were like negative and biased against Bitcoin showed pictures of the beautiful beaches and the smiling people.
00:23:21.800And so it's brought this huge influx of tourists and and venture capitalists.
00:23:26.800And then once they come here and they're on the ground, they see what an amazing country it is.
00:23:30.800And so then they really want to invest. And so I think it's really gotten the word out of us.
00:23:35.800Before people couldn't even point out El Salvador on a map.
00:23:37.800They really did put El Salvador on the map.
00:23:39.800And then, you know, now there's just so many natural beauties and and resources that El Salvador has, especially the people here.
00:23:49.800And so once people see that, they realize, OK, Bitcoin was the thing that got them down here.
00:23:53.800But there's so much more. And so, yes, we're seeing this huge transformation.
00:23:56.800And it's just it's it's transformed just the outlook of the people that people used to be trying to get out of El Salvador to the US.
00:24:04.800Now they see this influx of people from around the world and makes them think, oh, wow, maybe we're we are in the place.
00:24:09.800We're lucky to be here. And so let's build a future here. Let's invest in our communities.
00:24:13.800And so we've seen those kind of like animal spirits rise up and really transform the country.
00:24:17.800All right. Well, we've had an incredible day getting to explore Bitcoin Beach, talk to the people that are organizing this transformation and as well,
00:24:26.800talking to some people who are here studying and and investigating this area for their own purposes, because really it's a unique place.
00:24:34.800As I said before, this is the first municipality in the world to legalize Bitcoin.
00:24:40.800They have fully embraced Bitcoin. It is a circular Bitcoin economy here.
00:24:44.800The people are being paid in Bitcoin. Businesses are conducting operations in Bitcoin.
00:24:50.800Even the shacks on the side of the street here are selling waters with Bitcoin.
00:24:56.800There is no barrier to access. There's no barrier to the technology that is required to embrace the Bitcoin ecosystem in this small municipality.
00:25:05.800And one thing that is clear is that this municipality, El Zante Bitcoin Beach, is attracting all the tourists.
00:25:12.800We were wondering where all the tourists were in San Salvador in the main city.
00:25:16.800They're not there. They're here. They're here looking at the beautiful ocean, the hotels, this entire area is run on tourism.
00:25:24.800And it's also important to note the transformations that have taken place in this area in Bitcoin Beach with the embrace of Bitcoin.
00:25:33.800Before this city, before this municipality embraced Bitcoin, over 90% of the population here were unbankable.
00:25:41.800They were not given bank accounts. They were too poor to have bank accounts.
00:25:45.800They were excluded from the global financial system.
00:25:47.800But with Bitcoin, everybody is included in the system.
00:25:51.800They now have access to digital money. They now have the ability to save money.
00:25:55.800This is transformational for this area.
00:25:58.800And Bitcoin Beach as a test run for El Salvador to embrace Bitcoin has clearly proven to be successful.
00:26:06.800Well, that wraps up our coverage here at Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador and our coverage from El Salvador.
00:26:13.800Signing off from Bitcoin Beach for True North, Harrison Volk.
