00:00:00.000 Well, Premier Doug Ford and President Trump are trading schoolyard level insults following the
00:00:11.040 collapse of trade talks on the weekend. Ford called Trump a loser and told him to kiss his ass. 1.00
00:00:17.160 This guy's a loser. He's going to be a loser. And simple as that. We're going to fight with 1.00
00:00:21.720 everything we have. And you know something? I have more courage, more brains in my baby toe
00:00:27.240 than he has in his whole body. 1.00
00:00:28.640 And I have a lot of real estate on my ass, 1.00
00:00:30.640 so he has a lot of room to kiss my ass. 1.00
00:00:33.020 For his part, Trump released a truth social post 1.00
00:00:36.160 calling him Flunky Ford.
00:00:39.460 Lots of bluster from Doug Ford,
00:00:42.200 who is the premier of the Canadian province of Ontario,
00:00:46.100 but who is better known as the less charismatic,
00:00:49.440 intelligent, and overall unimpressive brother
00:00:51.720 of the late, great Rob Ford.
00:00:54.800 America has been carrying Canada for decades, but no longer.
00:00:58.320 The USA will always be far bigger, richer, and stronger than Canada.
00:01:03.360 Without the United States, Canada couldn't survive.
00:01:06.380 It's where they get all their money, and because of their current bad leadership,
00:01:11.580 primarily Governor Carney and his flunky Ford,
00:01:15.680 they will not be allowed to keep taking advantage of the United States, their key to survival.
00:01:21.740 In the meantime, Canada is divided over what to do next following the collapse of trade
00:01:27.840 talks on the weekend.
00:01:29.700 President Trump has vowed to double tariffs on Canadian-built cars and trucks to 50% on
00:01:35.500 January 1.
00:01:37.640 Prime Minister Carney has vowed dollar-for-dollar retaliation.
00:01:41.320 He says he refused the deal in part over tariffs on autos.
00:01:46.260 respect to the auto industry, both in terms of the level of the tariffs, the
00:01:52.080 treatment of Canadian content, so Canadian parts, Canadian steel, Canadian content
00:01:58.320 in vehicles, the scope of the tariffs. Americans wanted to limit it to autos
00:02:05.220 only, not include medium and heavy autos and light trucks to be more specific, not
00:02:09.840 include medium and heavy-duty trucks, which is a big change obviously, and with
00:02:15.300 With respect to Ford's new plan, for example, in Oakville, which is F-350s, F-450s, F-550s, they would have been excluded.
00:02:22.480 GM Silverado, same thing, would have been excluded from that.
00:02:27.920 No rationale, just for exclusion.
00:02:30.880 So effectively moving into a series of terms that would have made the production more uneconomic over time.
00:02:41.600 Getting back to Ford, he also threatened once again to cut off electricity to the United States.
00:02:47.600 We aren't the only one that sends electricity down to the US. New Brunswick does, Quebec does,
00:02:53.600 BC does, Manitoba does, just to name a few. So we need to get together, all together,
00:03:00.420 and decide if we're going to put surcharges on the electricity. How can we let them take
00:03:08.200 really inexpensive electricity to make goods to compete and take jobs from Canadians. 0.97
00:03:15.500 You know, you can't square that circle. So we'll use every tool in our toolbox. Then we'll see if 0.89
00:03:21.720 President Trump says, do I need Canada? Watch how he does cartwheels and he shouts and screams when
00:03:26.200 we put the surcharge on. Matter of fact, I can't wait. Well, Premier Daniel Smith of Alberta
00:03:32.660 rejects the idea of retaliation, saying it'll be Canadians who end up paying the price.
00:03:37.620 I know emotionally it feels good to retaliate, I get that, but let's remember what happens when we retaliate.
00:03:46.540 When retaliation happens, it means that everybody who is buying products from the United States are now going to face upwards of 50%, upwards to 50% tariffs.
00:03:56.300 And they're talking about that being on steel, on dairy, on appliances, on agriculture equipment, that one worries me a lot.
00:04:03.720 Conservative Party Pierre Polyev wants to see the deal that Carney says was unacceptable.
00:04:08.640 He posted this on X.
00:04:11.740 As Canadians are vulnerable to an escalating trade war with the United States,
00:04:16.160 Parliament must be reconvened.
00:04:18.600 Canadians deserve answers on how trade talks collapsed,
00:04:22.380 what tariffs will cost their families,
00:04:25.340 and how their jobs will be protected.
00:04:28.260 Prime Minister, reconvene Parliament now.
00:04:32.400 Our guest today is Georgianne Burke, who is a communications strategist and political expert
00:04:37.600 with Pathway Group. Welcome to the show, Georgianne. Thank you, Mark. Well, we saw the collapse
00:04:44.280 on the weekend. I mean, I interviewed the ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, last week,
00:04:50.860 and boy, things were sounding a lot different. It sounded like we had a deal that Trump was happy
00:04:56.760 with that canada was ready to sign and fast forward a day or two and it's a dumpster fire
00:05:05.480 could you tell us what you think took place so um i i will tell you one thing that i know for
00:05:12.920 sure is that the americans are completely in the dark about why they decided to withdraw at the
00:05:18.200 last minute and the only reasons they will know are the ones that we're hearing on the media in
00:05:23.000 canada from the prime minister himself um the they thought they had a deal actually canadian
00:05:31.720 the canadians were talking as if there was a deal and all of a sudden there wasn't so you have to
00:05:35.480 wonder why this would occur um and i believe um from everything i have observed and things that
00:05:43.320 i've heard over the last few days from both sides um that this was actually i i will say planned
00:05:50.440 i think it was planned to be this way um and why do i say that well first of all the prime minister
00:05:56.680 when he spoke um after the collapse of the talks the first statement that he made i think it was
00:06:02.600 friday was extremely polished now you and i both know and the world knows he is not a polished
00:06:09.480 off-the-cuff last-minute speech speaker okay so he had been planned this had been rehearsed
00:06:15.880 in front of the mirror 25 times before he got up. He also seemed to be able to answer most of the
00:06:22.280 questions that were asked reasonably well, both in French and English, which means that they had
00:06:27.440 practiced him on that as well, because he's not good at that. That's not what he's good at. He's
00:06:31.600 not good at off-the-cuff stuff like that. So I think this was actually planned. I think they
00:06:36.100 intended to let it go, even past the three days that Trump held off for them. And then they
00:06:43.100 announced they were withdrawing from the talks and they gave a bunch of excuses oh the french
00:06:47.040 language oh we can't make deals with other countries um oh the dairy products oh this oh
00:06:53.820 that and and actually my problem is nobody has seen the trade agreement that was offered
00:06:59.160 nobody knows what was in it and they certainly didn't tell the americans why they were withdrawing
00:07:04.900 uh at all they did not say to them we're withdrawing because of this particular issue
00:07:09.760 That they did not do. So you have to ask yourself, then, why did they do it? So here's my surmise. There are three by-elections coming up on August 31st in federal, and there are three in Ontario that are coming up. Maybe it's two in Ontario. Anyway, there's by-elections in Ontario on September 3rd.
00:07:30.960 He gave until September 8th before he was going to implement the retaliatory tariffs.
00:07:37.620 Well, that gives him time now after he's finished with the by-elections because they use this anti-American stuff to ratchet up the vote for themselves to get people out.
00:07:49.340 Oh, Mark Carney is going to save us from the bad man orange and all that stuff.
00:07:53.920 And Doug Ford does the same thing.
00:07:56.080 And then after that's over, they will say, oh, well, we'll hold off on those retaliatory
00:08:00.900 tariffs until we'll try to sit down with them again.
00:08:04.020 But my feeling is they don't really want a deal.
00:08:06.880 I've said this for a long time.
00:08:08.320 You know, I've said it to you a million times.
00:08:10.780 Trump didn't want USMCA.
00:08:12.700 That didn't mean he didn't want some kind of a bilateral agreement with Canada.
00:08:15.760 But I don't think Canada wants to deal with him at all.
00:08:17.720 And I mean, specifically by Canada, I mean, Mark Carney.
00:08:20.400 I think he's interested in China. 0.95
00:08:23.280 and he knows that china is a no-go with the u.s because it is a non-market country um and by the
00:08:30.460 way that restriction was in nafta and in usmca always so he's making that's a fake thing that
00:08:37.780 he's making up there they haven't changed that at all it's the same exact issue so saying that
00:08:43.160 they added something in is untrue um and um so so i i think that that's what he wants and he wants
00:08:51.040 to see if he can cut some deals with his friends in Europe, his buddies in the globalists over
00:08:56.200 there that just love him. We'll see how much he actually gets. Because the problem is going that
00:09:02.120 for these other countries is going to be that he is going to have antagonized the U.S. so much
00:09:06.300 that could impact their relationship with the U.S. And the U.S. is the big player in the trade world
00:09:12.500 along with China. They're a big player, but they're a lot nicer to get along with than China
00:09:17.360 is china comes in takes what it wants and leaves uh chaos when it retreats or moves out um or takes 0.84
00:09:24.800 over and turns the country into a vassal state if this is what canada wants i i feel bad i feel
00:09:31.040 really bad actually um because it is not a good move to make okay if what you say is true why
00:09:40.240 act like there is a deal in place and then upend the chessboard right at the last minute.
00:09:48.800 Trump would not have paused the tariffs if he didn't think there was a deal. He came out and
00:09:54.960 sounded very positive, as you know, late last week. This is all good. Our farmers are going to have
00:10:04.960 access and then on the weekend we find out no way jose that the prime minister is not going to sign
00:10:13.320 that deal premier ford is coming out says well i'm glad he's not signing that deal we got to hit back
00:10:20.320 with everything we've got and here we go basically an all-out trade war which i don't see canada
00:10:28.700 winning at the end of the day it's just it's not a fair fight and i'm just not sure that our
00:10:34.180 politicians really understand that. But you're saying that these by-elections were playing a
00:10:40.320 role, that he needed to be able to ramp up the elbows-up crowd ahead of those by-elections.
00:10:48.060 Now, normally a by-election is not that big a deal, but I suppose given the numerical advantage
00:10:55.280 being as minuscule as the liberals have it right now in terms of a majority, I guess what you're
00:11:01.040 saying that it boiled down to holding on to this razor thin majority uh that's why they did it
00:11:09.040 uh it's that and also giving them more legitimacy by elect actually electing people to the house
00:11:15.880 of commons instead of stealing them from other parties um so there's that but there's a worse
00:11:21.680 scenario that was kind of proposed to me and i don't know if it's true and i don't usually like
00:11:26.440 starting rumors because it is this isn't a rumor this is just a a scenario that someone put forward
00:11:32.300 to me and i don't think it's insane is that he may be actually looking to have a snap election
00:11:37.840 um and if that is in fact the case that explains a whole lot because he knows that people weren't
00:11:45.700 happy with the way that he achieved his majority um the other thing is if you look at the things
00:11:50.040 that he was saying were the reasons for getting out of the deal they're all related to the writings
00:11:55.720 that are involved in this by-election. You know, the French language thing, well, I think that
00:12:02.040 might have been for Chicoutimi Lenore and maybe the stuff on the dairy farmers too, largely who
00:12:08.360 are in Quebec. There's 4,000 dairy farmers in Quebec that are affected by, positively from
00:12:14.200 their perspective, by supply management. So, you know, if you look at it that way, you can see that
00:12:20.040 there's a political component to this. And I said his activities in the last few days would make
00:12:24.680 machiavelli blush um honestly uh it's shocking to me that he's that he's doing this and i just spoke
00:12:32.040 to one of your colleagues in the media just before i came on here uh just in a conversation he wasn't
00:12:37.160 interviewing me we were just chatting and i said to him i said you know you guys have to do your job
00:12:42.920 now is the time to do your job you need to ask the hard questions do not accept what he says at face
00:12:48.200 value because i have people say to me on friday why is he lying he's lying americans knew he wasn't
00:12:55.640 telling the truth because they were there in those in those discussions and they knew what happened
00:13:00.740 jameson greer was on the media saying i don't know what happened like everything was going along
00:13:07.640 swimmingly and then all of a sudden it was like nope we're not doing this so they were completely
00:13:11.900 caught flat-footed which is very unusual for the americans that means that somehow carney thinks
00:13:18.320 he outsmarted them but i think that all he will end up doing is really creating greater um uh
00:13:24.580 suspicion shall we say of canadians uh which is not a good thing at this time and um make it even
00:13:31.280 harder to negotiate something down the road which maybe maybe that's his end game maybe he just
00:13:35.220 doesn't want to deal yeah it was interesting that uh it appeared that carney was trying to
00:13:41.520 stir up passions in in quebec by saying that trump is trying to destroy the uh had a had an
00:13:50.600 issue with the french language or there's elements he didn't want french language to be required
00:13:55.320 on cnbc this morning and you may have heard him coming out and say well first of all i i speak
00:14:02.080 french and one of my kids was born in paris and you know i have no problem with the french
00:14:07.220 language had nothing to do with any issues around protecting Quebec, that this was simply
00:14:12.360 about Canada deciding to tax these tech giants like Netflix and other companies, these streaming
00:14:21.580 giants, so that they could essentially prop up these failing organizations in Canada.
00:14:28.340 So basically, they wanted to use tech money to prop up, you know, Canadian content, to pay for Canadian content.
00:14:39.180 And that was never going to fly with the Americans.
00:14:42.740 But that was one of the things that came out in that interview with Jameson Greer this morning.
00:14:48.820 Yeah, I mean, I think the U.S. is pretty unhappy with this situation right now.
00:14:55.020 And I don't know if, I mean, I don't know whether he thinks, whether Carney thinks that Canada is so important to the United States that they will have to jump back into negotiations.
00:15:04.900 I think he's overestimating the view of the U.S. toward this relationship.
00:15:09.220 um nobody wants to see uh the the industries that are going to be especially hurt by this
00:15:15.840 are the auto industry and related industries that do this back and forth across the border work
00:15:21.440 um you know multiple times to produce their products because they're so tightly intertwined
00:15:27.380 and it's been something that's been successful for five six decades right so that's going to
00:15:34.160 be a problem that's going to be hard on both sides of the border they're both going to suffer
00:15:37.520 from this. But the worst problem is I just spoke to someone today whose company does 80% of its
00:15:44.000 business with the U.S. I spoke to someone last week on the weekend whose company does 100% of
00:15:50.620 its business with the U.S. They do no Canadian business. They manufacture in Canada and 100%
00:15:55.340 of their product is shipped to the U.S. What's going to happen to them? Did anybody think about
00:16:01.540 them? On the issue of retaliatory tariffs, I mean, we've got Doug Ford and Premier Eby,
00:16:11.580 others, you know, saying, we got to hit him with everything we've got. And then you've got
00:16:17.600 Danielle Smith saying, well, whoa, well, maybe we should stop, you know, not do that. I mean,
00:16:23.580 as far as I've been able to gather from Trump and how he reacts, if we hit him with retaliatory
00:16:30.100 tariffs. He's not going to say, okay, let's get back to the bargaining table and hammer this out.
00:16:35.620 No, he's going to respond with even higher tariffs. And I just don't understand why we try
00:16:41.900 to use the same failed strategies over and over again. It's like the only thing we know how to do.
00:16:49.260 Yeah. And I mean, this is really a huge concern. It's really a big problem.
00:16:53.300 I will tell you that the best statement of everybody, party leaders, premieres, came from Danielle Smith on Friday.
00:17:02.520 She was the most reasonable.
00:17:04.760 And, you know, I'm not I'm not a person who is, you know, one of the groupies around Danielle Smith.
00:17:10.160 I like many things that she does and says, but I don't like other things.
00:17:15.740 But her statement was actually right on.
00:17:18.240 She said, we need to get serious about this and we need to get back to the table because she understands that there are businesses, including in the agriculture world in her province, that are going to be very detrimentally hurt by this.
00:17:32.380 She knows this. I spoke to a company last week in the it's in sort of in the critical materials field that is actually moving their entire company to Texas.
00:17:47.680 They're already doing production in Texas, but they've kept their headquarters and some of their production in Canada.
00:17:54.340 Not anymore. They're moving everything.
00:17:57.220 This is going to be and this is before that has actually been happening before because they've been seeing the writing on the wall.
00:18:04.160 I want a media person to ask.
00:18:07.380 Mark Carney, you said that we would have a deal by July 2025.
00:18:12.660 We are more than a year over that deadline.
00:18:15.320 what happened why did you not achieve this what what is wrong that you didn't achieve this
00:18:20.660 and see what he says do you want to make a prediction of where this goes i mean
00:18:25.860 is is it going to be a case where these tariffs actually come into place january the first or
00:18:32.380 are both sides going to get back to the table and resolve this thing um i pray to god that they will
00:18:40.520 However, I will tell you that my gut is saying to me that they don't really want this.
00:18:48.320 I hope I'm wrong.
00:18:49.200 I left my crystal ball over in the other room, so I can't actually go like this and tell you.
00:18:55.800 But I am really worried.
00:18:57.580 I'm worried because I think that what we're dealing with is a bunch of technocrats, people who don't understand political strategy,
00:19:06.860 don't understand the politics of the United States,
00:19:09.280 don't understand the people that they're dealing with.
00:19:12.620 And I don't mean politics in the electoral sense.
00:19:14.660 I mean politics in the communication and negotiation sense.
00:19:20.420 They don't understand what they're dealing with.
00:19:22.380 And it's dangerous for Canadians.
00:19:25.180 Thank you so much for coming on the show. 1.00
00:19:28.920 We really appreciate it.
00:19:30.560 My pleasure.
00:19:31.800 Did you know that we're actually closing the gap
00:19:34.940 with the CBC on YouTube?
00:19:36.860 now we're trying to hit 500,000 subscribers so if you haven't subscribed yet please
00:19:43.420 hit that button right now let's close that gap
