Transcript

00:00:00.000 I'm Wally Tamten with TrueNorth here in Belém para Brazil, reporting from on the ground at day one of the Belém Climate Summit,
00:00:07.960 the prelude events to the COP30 UN Climate Change Convention, the largest climate change event in the world,
00:00:14.020 where international delegations, business leaders, and prime ministers and presidents are expected to arrive shortly to discuss their proposals,
00:00:20.940 some of which can be absurd, on how to solve the so-called climate change issue while receiving great money from their taxpayers at home,
00:00:28.760 distributing it to developing nations and enforcing control measures like EV mandates and even controlling food regulations,
00:00:38.060 encouraging people possibly to eat bugs and other ridiculous proposals that we'll be exploring in the upcoming days.
00:00:43.760 Now, this is day one of the Belém Climate Summit.
00:00:46.260 The Belém Climate Summit is the Brazilian government, the Lula leftist-led Brazilian government's attempt to fundraise
00:00:51.980 and bring attention to their own domestic climate change agenda.
00:00:55.080 It's primarily focused on the Amazon rainforest issue, an issue that has received international attention in previous years,
00:01:01.680 and specifically attention from world leaders on the left, like Emmanuel Macron of France,
00:01:07.040 and also formerly Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada.
00:01:10.020 So we'll be watching very closely and reporting on the ground on day one, here on Thursday,
00:01:15.260 and tomorrow, day two, and the final day of the Leaders' Summit from the Belém Climate Summit.
00:01:19.600 And of course, on the 10th, COP30 will commence, and we will give you more in due time.
00:01:25.280 We'll talk to activists, protesters, delegations, leaders, and all peoples of interest to get you guys more info on the story.
00:01:34.580 I tried catching up with the EU head, Ursula von Leyen, who was talking to CNN Brazil for a while,
00:01:41.540 and of course I tried to get her to comment on EU-Canada relations, specifically on the framework of Canada's carbon tax,
00:01:48.200 and whether or not she rated that as a positive measure to combat climate change, in her view.
00:01:54.220 But of course, she wasn't able to answer anyone's questions.
00:01:56.860 She just walked through the corridor and went out right to the event.
00:01:59.860 She wasn't interested in doing any media at the time, beyond, of course, CNN, but Brazilian CNN for that matter.
00:02:05.300 So, we'll be looking forward to finding if we can get some comments from other EU delegations, officials, prime ministers.
00:02:12.940 I know Prime Minister Keir Starmer is here today, as well as French President Emmanuel Macron.
00:02:18.160 So, we'll do our best here at True North in Belém, Brazil, to catch up with these officials
00:02:21.720 and explore Canada's impression and view and reputation in the European sphere.
00:02:27.880 I know Keir Starmer has called himself the most European, or Canada, he's called Canada, rather,
00:02:33.280 the most European country outside of Europe.
00:02:35.320 So, let's see if the Europeans see it the same way.
00:02:38.260 How would you judge Canada's job on its carbon tax regime?
00:02:41.180 Please, please, please.
00:02:41.960 How would you rate Canada?
00:02:43.680 The president, sorry, sorry.
00:02:47.540 Ursula, how would you rate Mark Keir Starmer's leadership of Canada, given his history on environment?
00:02:52.600 There will be other opportunities.
00:02:53.800 How do you rate Mark Keir Starmer's leadership on climate?
00:03:04.720 Anything on Mark Keir Starmer in Canada?
00:03:08.400 Here in Brazil, COP30, earlier today, UN Chief Antonio Gutierrez demanded developed nations
00:03:14.900 to fork up $1.3 trillion of tax dollars to fund debt relief and climate action in developing nations
00:03:22.980 and demanded $300 billion be allocated immediately to the United Nations' climate efforts.
00:03:29.980 Trade and investment policies must support climate ambition, not undermine it.
00:03:38.500 Second, we must demonstrate a clear and credible path to reaching the $1.3 trillion US dollars a year
00:03:45.220 in climate finance for developing countries by 2035, as agreed at COP29 in Baku.
00:03:53.460 Developed countries must take the lead in mobilizing $300 billion annually, delivering affordable,
00:03:59.560 predictable finance at the agreed scale.
00:04:02.040 And all providers must show they will contribute to meeting the $300 billion and $1.3 trillion milestones.
00:04:10.700 It's no longer time for negotiations.
00:04:14.060 It's time for implementation, implementation, implementation.
00:04:18.200 In terms of Canada's presence here at COP30 in Brazil, so far I've only caught up with the ambassador
00:04:24.020 very briefly walking by, didn't want to get any questions or on camera,
00:04:27.920 and had to run as fast as he could to the doors of the restricted area where he was able to give a speech
00:04:33.500 earlier today to a closed room of delegates from around the world.
00:04:37.360 Now, Canada has so far only sent their Brazilian ambassador, although it is believed, according
00:04:43.240 to reports after the Environment Canada briefed media, we're expecting most likely
00:04:49.540 former Environment Minister Stephen Gobault to possibly show up as well, so we'll be looking
00:04:55.320 out for him.
00:04:56.460 The official list of Canada's delegation has not been confirmed yet, so I will keep you posted
00:05:02.260 in terms of updates as they come.
00:05:04.420 Very likely that they'll be here by Monday when the COP30 UN aspect of the summit begins
00:05:11.220 officially and fully.
00:05:12.940 Canada's pavilion, Canada does have a pavilion here prepared in the building, but it is not
00:05:18.680 accessible or visible yet, so we will dive into that information for you and give you
00:05:23.360 guys some behind-the-scenes footage and lookout for both Canada's delegation and presence at
00:05:28.440 this conference and hopefully find out what kind of money or initiatives we're coming
00:05:33.260 into on the world stage.
00:05:34.420 I'm Wally Tam Tam, Belém para Brazil, signing off for True North.
