00:00:00.000 So now the formal part of Remembrance Day observances is over. The cenotaphs, the wreath-laying ceremonies, the assemblies at our schools in different provinces across the country.
00:00:15.880 So now, out of sight, out of mind, right? Not going to think about it, not going to talk about it for another calendar year.
00:00:22.880 Well, I kind of exaggerate because, of course, many Canadians do think a lot about these issues, but largely we use Remembrance Day as a one-day-only affair, where we think quite concentratedly on these issues, and then we don't go back to it again for another year.
00:00:38.960 Now, I'm not necessarily blaming Canadians for this because we know we live busy lives and there's a lot competing for our attentions, but I think now when we're still sort of in that moment of reflecting on Remembrance Day,
00:00:50.980 it's an important time where we can say, hang on a second, how can we make this something of a year-long issue, talking about remembering Canada's wartime contributions,
00:01:01.860 talking about honoring those who serve, those who did serve, those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. There are many ways to do it.
00:01:09.020 There are national debates to be had about whether or not Remembrance Day should be made a national holiday.
00:01:14.180 Right now, it's observed in a number of provinces in all territories, but not in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland.
00:01:21.120 Do you think people should have the day off so they can observe it?
00:01:24.920 Some people say, no, absolutely not, because it'll cheapen it and people will just treat it like Boxing Day and so forth.
00:01:30.020 What's going to happen with the kids who usually have the assemblies in schools that day?
00:01:33.600 But if you speak to people in British Columbia and Alberta, they say, we're doing just fine, thank you.
00:01:38.260 And a lot of people do make the effort to go out to the ceremonies and the schools, well, they make a point of having those assemblies on the day before school breaks, before having that holiday.
00:01:48.200 So let's have that conversation.
00:01:50.520 Let's also talk about different specific ways that we can honor our veterans and those who continue to serve all throughout.
00:01:57.880 There are conversations about respecting new veterans, acknowledging the contributions that they have to make when they leave military service and enter civilian life.
00:02:08.340 Lots of contributions to make.
00:02:10.380 There's a lot they have to offer.
00:02:12.740 Let's talk about that as well.
00:02:14.300 Let's talk about the promotion and study of Canadian history more broadly.
00:02:19.020 A lot of people complain, kids today, they're not learning history as much as they used to, as much as they should be.
00:02:24.380 And I think there's some point to that.
00:02:25.700 I mean, I don't like getting on the complaining about what all millennials do.
00:02:29.040 I'm actually born in sort of the eldest year that makes you a millennial.
00:02:32.660 But I still think there's something to be said about talking about Canadian history more.
00:02:37.840 Another is just looking at the sacrifices people made and putting it all into perspective.
00:02:42.560 You know, I'll have those mornings when I have a hangnail and I complain about it for a while.
00:02:46.780 I mean, I'm exaggerating, but you know what I mean.
00:02:48.760 And then you pause and you go, Fury, what are you talking about?
00:02:51.060 Like, you're complaining about this?
00:02:53.040 Think about how good you have it.
00:02:54.560 Think about the things that people did who fought for our freedoms.
00:02:59.340 It really helps to put a lot of things into perspective.
00:03:02.060 Just that daily humility when you acknowledge the things that people who served, people who died serving,
00:03:08.360 those who continue to serve do for us day in and day out.
00:03:11.660 Let's take that spirit of remembrance day and really try and keep some of it with us all throughout the year.
