Harrison Faulkner here reporting for True North in Etobicoke, Ontario, the heart of Ford Nation.
00:00:05.760
Behind me in the Toronto Congress Centre, Doug Ford will address his supporters one last time
00:00:10.500
before Ontario voters head to the polls tomorrow.
00:00:14.180
The polls at the moment are looking very favourable for Doug Ford.
00:00:17.860
Everything is pointing to Doug Ford extending his majority government and remaining Premier for another four years.
00:00:23.740
So we're here and we want to ask Doug Ford supporters about one accomplishment he has had in office
00:00:27.980
that they feel best represents his four years as Premier of Ontario.
00:00:31.940
And given that it's a near certainty the Premier will remain Premier for the next four years,
00:00:36.940
we wanted to ask them about one thing they feel the Premier can improve on in the next four years in leading the province.
00:00:43.320
We're going to head inside, we're going to try and head inside and see what happens
00:00:46.940
and see if we can talk to some Ontario PC supporters.
00:00:50.200
If you want more reports, more committees and more empty talk, well, you've got a lot of options in this election.
00:00:57.980
But if you want real action, if you want to get it done, you have one choice, the Ontario PC's.
00:01:13.440
What's the biggest accomplishment that the Ford Gardener was able to do in the first four years
00:01:18.100
that you think, for you, symbolizes their first four years?
00:01:21.800
You know, I think it's tough to judge the first four years because half of it was hampered by COVID.
00:01:26.940
Like, the last two years was almost a write-off.
00:01:29.560
And before that, there were some challenges with the government.
00:01:36.260
So I don't think you can really look at those four years accurately, because we had a once-in-a-lifetime event.
00:01:44.260
So I think it's more fair to look at the platform and see how that will play out in the next few years
00:01:50.520
and how it will recover from the pandemic, as opposed to looking at the last four years,
00:01:54.600
because it's just not a great baseline to judge any politician, and not just Doug Ford, any politician across the board.
00:02:00.480
What's the biggest accomplishment you think he had in the first four years that you think symbolizes his time as Premier?
00:02:09.480
For me, because I have been living here for 10 years, the greatest thing that he's done for those people in this province
00:02:18.320
is, you know, like, he's increased, you know, like, the public transportation, so I can get everywhere.
00:02:25.320
I can work, you know, everywhere that I want, by public transit, it's so convenient for me.
00:02:30.580
I don't need, you know, like, to take more time, and it's what he's focusing.
00:02:35.280
And he's increasing the, you know, like, the wage, and he's increasing the wage for those who are, you know,
00:02:41.780
working in healthcare system, especially for nurses, personal support workers.
00:02:45.620
And he has a plan to, you know, like, to get more people to work in healthcare system.
00:02:56.380
The main thing that Doug Ford did in the past four years was the investment in the infrastructure,
00:03:02.360
was the investments in the youth program was there, was there taking care of the youth,
00:03:07.220
the pandemic was such a bad situation all over the world.
00:03:10.740
In those times, Doug Ford proven his skill and successful leadership.
00:03:20.000
And I'll add one thing here that he did a lot for small businesses
00:03:24.380
because they are the backbone of any community.
00:03:29.780
So there, they did a lot of improvement, and we are very happy with that.
00:03:34.820
What do you think are some of the things that the Premier could improve on in the next four years?
00:03:38.760
I think we saw the true Blue Party problem.
0.92
00:03:43.580
That had a lot to do with the fact that the PCs were more centrist during the world of COVID.
00:03:49.020
I think focusing more on housing policy, more on the economics of all of the issues that people are facing,
00:03:55.560
inflation, rising housing prices, rising grocery prices.
00:03:59.600
Focusing on that stuff, focusing on the economics of it, I think is something,
00:04:05.460
For me, that we're going to work to build this province become a very good province for those immigrants,
00:04:19.740
especially for those seniors, because they need a lot of work done, especially me.
00:04:27.620
You know, like, as a cook for retirement home, I know that the level of care for those seniors we need for.
00:04:36.160
We need him, you know, to work on his, you know, plan for the rest of the people in the province,
00:04:45.380
So, we feel that Doug Ford is addressing the issues of Ontarians so well.
00:04:53.120
Number two is the heavy 413, which is much needed for the traffic of Ontario.
00:04:58.660
So, in pandemic, we all have seen how Doug Ford has performed so well,
00:05:06.340
Same way, the Ontario needs a lot more to be done.
00:05:12.940
Given that it's looking very likely that the Doug Ford PCs are going to retain their majority government
00:05:17.920
and remaining government for the next four years,
00:05:20.320
I wanted to ask some cabinet ministers what they think they can improve on in the next four years
00:05:27.020
Interestingly, Paul Calandra, the government house leader,
00:05:30.400
said that he thinks the PCs can improve in their communication
00:05:33.240
and that Conservatives struggle to communicate to the base during the pandemic.
00:05:37.340
I was able to catch up with Transportation Minister Caroline Mulroney,
00:05:41.320
Treasury Board President Pramit Sarkaria, and of course Paul Calandra.
00:05:46.240
So, what would you do in the next four years if you win tomorrow
00:05:54.880
Well, I'll say that we've always been steadfast in our mission
00:06:00.620
to invest in infrastructure that the Liberals did not do.
00:06:07.340
I think the Premier and our government did a great job
00:06:13.640
but we need to continue to invest in healthcare
00:06:18.920
So, I think that's going to be a priority going forward.
00:06:21.480
Well, I think, you know, given the last two years,
00:06:24.260
it's been a very difficult time for many people.
00:06:28.040
We want to move forward by building on our strong economy.
00:06:32.920
We want to make sure that we've got good paying jobs
00:06:37.100
And we want to make sure we're investing in infrastructure
00:06:38.800
so for the next 10 years we can attract new jobs.
00:06:41.720
We're going to make Ontario continue to make Ontario more competitive.
00:06:47.800
and make sure once again Ontario becomes the economic engine of this country,
00:06:53.160
What's one thing in the first four years you felt like you could improve on
00:07:02.420
I think it's something that conservatives always talk about,
00:07:09.680
And as hard as we try, I think whether it's federally, provincially,
00:07:14.360
conservatives always seem to have a trouble at communicating, right?
00:07:17.500
That's the part that we've got to do a bit better
00:07:20.660
In Etobicoke for True North, Harrison Faulkner.
