We're way too late for Canada Day, but that doesn't mean we won't get a fireworks show.
00:00:05.240
Steve Bannon versus David Frum, one of the most interesting political matchups we've seen as of late,
00:00:11.840
certainly when the question of populism is at stake.
00:00:15.600
Steve Bannon and David Frum will be debating whether the future of Western politics is populist, not liberal,
00:00:22.580
at a Munk Debate event Friday in Toronto at Roy Thompson Hall.
00:00:26.280
If you've never been to a Munk Debate, they're truly spectacular.
00:00:29.420
You get some real heavyweights on both sides of key issues, whether it's political correctness or refugees,
00:00:35.600
or in general, U.S. politics, whether Donald Trump is the guy.
00:00:39.340
They've done all of this, and the Munk Debates really prove how much you can accomplish with open, honest, and respectful debate.
00:00:48.140
But debate itself is the enemy to the modern left.
00:00:51.220
Charlie Angus, a new Democratic Party member of Parliament, came out saying that Steve Bannon should be uninvited from this
00:00:58.140
out of respect, he said, for the victims of the tragic shooting at the synagogue in Pittsburgh over the weekend.
00:01:04.780
Now, as far as I know, Bannon was not even in Pennsylvania at the time,
00:01:08.220
but somehow it's disrespectful to the families of slain Jewish worshippers to have Steve Bannon debating populism in Toronto.
00:01:18.580
The fact is, the NDP, like so many people on the far left, do not believe in free speech.
00:01:28.420
And the party itself actually takes the position that Charlie Angus put forward,
00:01:33.000
which means that we have a political party starting to tell private groups
00:01:36.740
which people are or are not deserving of a right to speak their mind and public forums.
00:01:42.380
The whole point of free speech is that you get to actually see and test different positions,
00:01:49.100
different belief systems, different ideological viewpoints.
00:01:52.580
And what better way to do that than in what is literally a debate format?
00:01:57.080
But for people in Antifa and all of these other radical groups,
00:02:01.020
they've been wanting this event to be cancelled ever since the get-go.
00:02:04.740
Which brings the question up, what are they so afraid of?
00:02:08.200
You see, a lot of the people that actually try to no-platform others
00:02:11.940
are scared that the person might actually make a good point or two.
00:02:16.160
They're scared that the person might actually win people over.
00:02:19.200
It shows that they're being so close-minded in not actually allowing a debate to go forward
00:02:24.740
because to them, debate is not something that should be afforded to reprehensible people.
00:02:31.220
That if you allow two positions to be given equal footing on a stage,
00:02:38.200
The person that they believe is whoever the latest incarnation of Hitler is.
00:02:44.320
Now, there are lots of things that we as a society may say shouldn't be debated,
00:02:54.900
But it's individuals that get to make those determinations,
00:02:58.160
not political parties, and certainly not the government.
00:03:01.020
