00:00:00.000 I saw an interesting sign the other day in a storefront window in my neighborhood.
00:00:10.120 It was a sign that said, everyone welcome.
00:00:12.860 And it showed one of those little yellow smiley face emojis with a mask over it.
00:00:16.860 And it said, you are required to wear a mask when you come in the store in accordance with the various laws and so forth.
00:00:23.040 But we also acknowledge the subsection of the laws that talks about mask exemptions.
00:00:28.640 So everyone welcome, have a nice day.
00:00:31.180 And I thought, that's very interesting.
00:00:33.580 Because this mask exemption conversation, it's become a pretty acrimonious one.
00:00:37.300 And there are some stores that say, absolutely, under no circumstances can you get away with not wearing a mask.
00:00:43.300 And there's been some odd stories about stores actually kicking out special needs persons.
00:00:48.020 And there was a lady who had no arms because of a disability.
00:00:52.060 And she said that particular day, she was not able to put the mask on because she didn't have a family member with her when she was going into the store.
00:00:58.640 And so forth.
00:00:59.400 But they said, no, we don't care.
00:01:00.460 You've got to get out of this store.
00:01:01.600 I mean, really kind of inhumane stuff going on.
00:01:04.820 And I thought, man, this is really interesting to see this sign, this everyone welcome sign.
00:01:09.140 Because I always wear the mask.
00:01:10.480 And, you know, it's not a big deal for me.
00:01:12.320 I wear the mask.
00:01:13.020 But look, if I'm going into Loblaws and there's a hundred shoppers and one of them is not wearing the mask.
00:01:19.040 I know some people go, we've got to call the cops right away.
00:01:21.420 Or we've got to film them on the phone and chase after them in the store and call them names and so forth.
00:01:25.760 I'm just like, okay, whatever.
00:01:27.120 There's one person who, for whatever reason, doesn't want to or can't or whatnot, isn't wearing the mask.
00:01:32.660 It's not a big deal.
00:01:34.000 And I say all of this because I just feel like that store sign is a very kind of mature and humane one.
00:01:40.400 Because there's been a lot of inhumane and intolerant behavior happening recently.
00:01:45.100 I saw that store and I thought, this is a business that will get my business, that I will be a customer there to acknowledge that I think they're just being decent and easygoing and not, you know, excessively irate at people.
00:01:59.000 Whereas there's another store in my neighborhood where when the store was closed for customers going in, just open for curbside pickup, it had caution tape on the handle.
00:02:09.600 It says, do not touch the handle.
00:02:12.600 Do not touch the door at all when you were coming for curbside pickup and so forth.
00:02:17.100 It was very like, whoa.
00:02:18.540 And I was kind of like, all right, nice to know where you stand on all of this.
00:02:22.580 But at the same time, I also thought, okay, in a week or two or what have you, the government's maybe going to say the store can reopen.
00:02:29.440 So what are you going to be like then?
00:02:30.740 You've gone from saying, you know, it's too dangerous to touch the handle or whatever sort of hostility was going on there to us being in the store now.
00:02:39.440 How are you going to make that adjustment?
00:02:41.640 I mean, is it going to be a kind of tense place to be in this?
00:02:45.600 I don't really want to be there.
00:02:46.960 I don't really want to frequent this business.
00:02:49.520 I mean, there's a lot of places that are very much taking COVID seriously and following the protocols, but they still manage to do it in a way that is not, I think, being overtly hostile to their communities and to their customers.
00:03:03.860 And I will be thinking about this when I make my shopping choices after the pandemic's over and where I choose to go and so forth.
00:03:11.560 You know, there's been a lot of communities outside of Toronto where Torontonians like to go on the weekend and hang out and so forth.
00:03:18.300 And some of them, you know, the mayors have said, we don't want these Toronto people here right now bringing up their dirty virus and so forth.
00:03:24.200 Even though were you to have gone up on the day, there would be the same protocols we all follow.
00:03:28.360 And I thought, geez, you know, on other days, and I know when the pandemic's over, you can say, oh, come on, come back.
00:03:33.460 We lost so much money, so much clientele.
00:03:36.240 You know, let's, you know, hashtag shop local, support these businesses and so forth.
00:03:40.360 I'm like, well, I don't know.
00:03:41.360 You gave us the middle finger and you made it pretty clear you did not want to see us and you were very intolerant then.
00:03:47.560 What, suddenly now we should open our wallets?
00:03:50.060 I don't know.
00:03:50.420 How do you feel about all of this?
00:03:51.900 I think there's going to be a lot of, you know, there's a lot of tension now.
00:03:54.700 But I think when it's all over, people will remember these experiences and these scenarios.
00:04:00.060 And I don't know, maybe that tension will sort of continue and it will inform the choices that we make in our shopping experiences
00:04:08.420 and how we go out and about in our communities.
