00:00:00.360 We're days away from Canada signing the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration, 0.92
00:00:07.040 a document that is finally being exposed around the world for being what it is,
00:00:10.980 a very Orwellian and totalitarian pledge to have countries surrender their immigration systems
00:00:16.920 to that of the international community, and specifically the United Nations, this globalist fantasy.
00:00:22.700 Well, one of the things that has gotten a lot of attention, thankfully,
00:00:25.980 is the provision in the compact that restricts freedom of coverage for the media.
00:00:32.760 Signatories agree to promote independent, objective, and quality reporting of media outlets,
00:00:38.620 including internet-based information, including by sensitizing and educating media professionals
00:00:44.240 on migration-related issues and terminology, investing in ethical reporting standards and advertising,
00:00:49.980 and stopping allocation of public funding or material support to media outlets
00:00:55.820 that systematically promote intolerance, xenophobia, racism, and other forms of discrimination towards migrants
00:01:02.720 in full respect for the freedom of the media.
00:01:06.760 Now, that little throwaway line in there about the respect for freedom of the media
00:01:10.460 is merely to ameliorate some of the obvious concerns that this provision threatens the media.
00:01:15.880 The reason people think that is because it actually does.
00:01:19.640 And beyond the sensitizing and educating component,
00:01:22.680 I want to focus in on a very key factor of this that has not gotten as much attention as it should,
00:01:28.800 and that is the restriction of public allocation of money, of government money, of government funds,
00:01:35.220 for media outlets that run afoul of what the UN says is an approved narrative
00:01:39.780 on migrants and immigration and illegal immigrants, perhaps.
00:01:43.580 If government didn't bankroll media, this would not be as much of an issue,
00:01:48.880 but this comes just a few weeks after Justin Trudeau announced that there was going to be a government-appointed panel
00:01:55.000 to decide which media outlets in Canada get access to the $595 million media slush fund
00:02:01.520 intended to save the journalism industry from its inevitable collapse, at least in its current form.
00:02:08.020 So now, all of a sudden, we have a framework where Justin Trudeau has said that his government
00:02:11.900 will decide which media outlets qualify for government money,
00:02:16.520 and now we have a pact that Canada will be signing to say that government will withhold public funds
00:02:21.820 from media outlets that systematically discriminate against migrants.
00:02:25.240 The problem is that the compact in question doesn't distinguish between illegal and illegal migrants.
00:02:31.200 More importantly, the compact doesn't really discuss any of the situations
00:02:35.360 where it may be completely legitimate to criticize migration,
00:02:39.300 such as criticizing illegal border crossing, an ongoing problem in Canada,
00:02:43.580 or criticizing illegal immigrants and the way that they are sometimes dealt with by governments.
00:02:49.660 So now we have a very real risk here.
00:02:51.880 Canada, despite saying this compact is non-binding,
00:02:55.020 is in fact signing this because of a full-throated endorsement of what this compact is pushing.
00:03:00.140 And even if the UN isn't able to enforce this,
00:03:03.360 Canada and Canada's government can enforce this and can make it binding
00:03:07.540 as far as Canadian law is concerned.
00:03:11.120 So media outlets need to be very wary of this,
00:03:13.460 that now there is a government-approved and a UN-approved narrative
00:03:16.480 as to how you can discuss migration and immigration
00:03:19.700 and how you are allowed to have these conversations.
00:03:23.360 And if you do it the wrong way, your money is on the line.
00:03:27.260 It's the taxpayer money. It's government money.
00:03:29.120 And by bankrolling the media, what Justin Trudeau has done
00:03:32.600 is put into question where the media's loyalties are.
00:03:37.760 And I think the timing of this should concern all Canadians.
00:03:40.680 We have a government willingly signing away its autonomy and its sovereignty
00:03:45.200 to an international body.
00:03:46.900 And all of a sudden, it's media outlets that are going to be responsible
00:03:49.960 for the re-education that the government is paying for,
00:03:53.720 which means you and I are.
00:03:55.120 For the True North Initiative, I'm Andrew Lutton.
