00:00:00.000 If it's not the Prime Minister or the globalist cabal trying to beat you into submission,
00:00:04.300 then it's Hollywood. Or should I say, Hollywood wannabes. The Canadian Junos took place this week
00:00:10.020 and it was every bit as cringy as you can imagine. The show is so embarrassing that Canadians with 1.00
00:00:16.300 actual musical success and talent can't even bother to show up, leaving one-hit wonders and
00:00:23.040 Calgary natives Tegan and Sarah to take to the stage to lecture us all about the importance
00:00:28.280 of allowing children to mutilate themselves. Now, if you're struggling to remember who they are,
00:00:33.880 you're not alone. The last time anyone cared about Tegan and Sarah's music, the only news
00:00:38.280 delivery I partook in was my paper route. It's obvious that they've turned to politics to find
00:00:43.400 the success and recognition that they once craved from a musical career. But Alberta politics already
00:00:48.660 has enough bad actors and we don't need washed up sloppy seconds from the Canadian Junos.
00:00:54.480 I'm Rachel Emanuel and this is the Alberta Roundup.
00:00:58.280 Taking a look at our first story here, at the recent Juno Awards in Halifax,
00:01:12.440 Calgary musical duo Tegan and Sarah took aim at the Alberta government's decision to ban transgender
00:01:18.600 surgery for minors. The sisters said the Alberta government policy amounts to a quote, attack
00:01:23.880 on LGBTQ rights while accepting the humanitarian award for their foundation's work. Take a listen
00:01:30.660 for yourself.
00:01:31.200 If the world were not so hostile to us LGBTQ plus people, we would see ourselves purely as musicians.
00:01:39.880 Advocating for our community's rights is a great privilege and we are dedicated to confronting
00:01:45.440 any form of discrimination that threatens the well-being of our community.
00:01:53.520 Threats like the Alberta government's attempt to prevent trans youth from accessing vital care.
00:01:59.460 These attacks are harmful because they are directed at the kids who need our support the most.
00:02:11.680 The award was of course presented by transgender actor Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page.
00:02:18.460 Page is also a member of the Tegan and Sarah Foundation board and the foundation was formed in 2016
00:02:23.960 after President Donald J. Trump was elected to advocate for quote, economic justice, health and representation
00:02:31.900 for LGBTQ girls and women.
00:02:34.900 In a statement to True North, Danielle Smith's press secretary responded to the attack saying quote,
00:02:39.560 quote, the government is introducing these policies across several ministries to preserve the choices
00:02:44.760 children and youth have before potentially making life-altering and often irreversible adult decisions.
00:02:50.420 The government is also bringing in health care professionals who specialize in transgender care
00:02:55.620 to work with transgender adults. You might remember that when Danielle Smith made this announcement
00:03:00.000 a few weeks back, she said that currently transgender adults have to travel out of province to receive care.
00:03:05.680 Moving into our next story here, Tucker Carlson is an Oling adept at drawing large crowds. 1.00
00:03:11.720 He's also good for business, at least according to one Alberta credit union.
00:03:16.220 Membership at Bow Valley credit union has expanded by 3% since it was the headline sponsor for Tucker
00:03:21.500 Carlson's Canadian tour earlier this year. Bow Valley CEO Brett Olin told me that the growth comes
00:03:27.540 despite legacy media outlets reporting that the partnership negatively impacted the credit union.
00:03:33.180 Olin said quote, since the mainstream media started with their vitriol towards Bow Valley,
00:03:38.580 new membership continues to speed up as we hold firm with our position.
00:03:43.400 The growth totals 356 new business and personal accounts and equals more than 26 million in new
00:03:49.600 deposits. In contrast, Bow Valley lost 17 accounts and just over $400,000 in deposits.
00:03:56.500 So you can see they clearly came ahead with this one.
00:03:59.220 And let's take a look at some of that legacy media criticism of Bow Valley.
00:04:04.460 In February, the Cochran Eagle criticized Bow Valley for sponsoring the Carlson events
00:04:08.800 and reported that the Airdrie Cochran NDP would be moving funds from the credit union in protest.
00:04:15.440 Just out of curiosity, how much money do you think that NDP branch even had in their bank account?
00:04:19.780 My guess is they probably had like an empty line of credit, but no actual funds.
00:04:23.380 As well, the Rocky Mountain Outlook's local journalism initiative reporter,
00:04:27.640 meaning a journalist whose salary is paid for by the federal government,
00:04:31.320 accused Bow Valley of quote,
00:04:32.980 coming under fire for a so-called marketing strategy to expand its membership
00:04:37.520 and working in socially conservative circles.
00:04:40.540 Moving into our next story here, Alberta Premier Daniel Smith testified at the House of Commons
00:04:45.000 Estimates and Operations Committee on Thursday.
00:04:47.360 The premier has been imploring the federal government to not raise its carbon tax,
00:04:53.300 which is of course scheduled to increase on April 1st.
00:04:56.420 And she's been making that call along with six other premiers.
00:05:00.100 Here's a look at what the premier had to tell MPs this week.
00:05:03.000 Families are being forced to make tough choices just to put food on the table.
00:05:07.100 Businesses are having to make sacrifices to keep the lights on.
00:05:10.320 Social services are under intense strain as more and more people reach out for help,
00:05:14.880 many for the first time in their lives.
00:05:16.300 Albertans and all Canadians need common sense, compassion and responsible government to prevail.
00:05:22.220 That's why I'm urging you today to heed the calls of Canadians across the country
00:05:26.460 and suspend the increase in the carbon tax on April 1st.
00:05:29.620 Moving into the controversy of the week,
00:05:31.360 Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she wants more control over immigration
00:05:35.160 after the federal government declined to increase the number of skilled workers allotted to the province.
00:05:40.800 In a letter, Smith asked Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
00:05:43.300 to re-evaluate his government's decision to limit allocations for Alberta's Provincial Nominee Programme,
00:05:49.220 saying Alberta's population growth is the highest seen in four decades
00:05:53.280 and the province requires more workers.
00:05:56.340 The Premier also said that Ottawa should respect Section 95 of the Constitution Act
00:06:00.600 and let Alberta determine the number of skilled workers let into the province.
00:06:04.780 In a statement, Smith said,
00:06:06.600 We continue to experience labour shortages that could be resolved
00:06:10.000 by welcoming skilled workers from around the world,
00:06:13.300 including evacuees from Ukraine,
00:06:15.440 many of whom have the exact skills that our job market most needs.
00:06:19.360 Let us welcome the skilled individuals we need into our province on our terms.
00:06:23.980 Section 95 of the Constitution Act 1867
00:06:26.820 relates to federal and provincial legislative jurisdiction over agriculture and immigration.
00:06:32.320 The federal government's Provincial Nominee Programme chooses
00:06:35.760 which skilled applicants will be admitted into a given province or territory.
00:06:40.300 Last week, Ottawa told the province that it would receive 9,750 skilled workers.
00:06:45.680 That's the same number we were given in 2023
00:06:47.620 and down from the 10,140 skilled workers that Ottawa initially promised us for this year.
00:06:54.040 John Carpe, President of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms,
00:06:57.400 said it was fair of Smith to invoke the Constitution Act
00:07:00.260 because Section 95 requires that the province receives provincial input on immigration.
00:07:06.420 He said,
00:07:07.060 It's good and relevant to remind the federal government.
00:07:10.480 Carpe also said that while Ottawa is not in conflict with the letter of the law,
00:07:14.380 they do appear to be in conflict with the spirit of the law,
00:07:17.120 which requires the federal government to accommodate the needs of the provinces.
00:07:21.340 And if the province with the strongest and the fastest growing economy
00:07:24.360 requires more skilled workers,
00:07:26.280 He said,
00:07:27.580 Absent compelling reasons,
00:07:29.460 the federal government should accommodate that.
00:07:31.440 Moving into our watching in the weeks to come,
00:07:34.060 Alberta NDP leadership hopeful in the head,
00:07:36.020 Nenshi's success at signing up new members
00:07:38.240 has caused at least one competitor to drop out.
00:07:41.860 But new data reveals that he has an uphill battle
00:07:44.880 against Alberta Premier Daniel Smith
00:07:46.600 if he wins the leadership contest.
00:07:48.560 Edmonton MLA Raki Pancelli dropped out of the race this week
00:07:51.380 and announced that she would be backing the former Calgary mayor.
00:07:54.040 The Alberta NDP has declined to release updated party numbers,
00:07:57.820 but Pancelli said membership numbers provided to the leadership candidates by the party
00:08:02.020 reveal that Nenshi has more than doubled party membership
00:08:05.100 since he announced his leadership bid two weeks ago.
00:08:08.640 The Alberta NDP had 6,224 members at the end of December,
00:08:13.240 and the party says it will release an updated list in May
00:08:16.200 once all new members are vetted.
00:08:18.440 An Abacus data poll released on Wednesday
00:08:20.340 revealed that Nenshi is the most well-known candidate,
00:08:22.920 and he's also the only candidate with a clear net positive impression.
00:08:27.700 However, when it comes to competing with Smith,
00:08:30.040 province-wide support for an Alberta NDP led by Nenshi was at 38%,
00:08:34.220 compared with 53% who said they would vote for Danielle Smith's United Conservative Party.
00:08:39.920 The question of the week for you all is,
00:08:41.520 would you rather vote for an Alberta NDP led by the head Nenshi
00:08:44.500 or a United Conservative Party led by Danielle Smith?
00:08:47.560 Drop your answer in the comments below.
00:08:49.760 Nenshi also had a campaign stop in Edmonton this week.
00:08:52.340 Let's take a look at that crowd.
00:08:53.680 If I was a liberal, this is where I would say that the crowd looks so old and so white, 1.00
00:08:57.440 but since I'm not, my only comment is going to be that,
00:09:00.300 man, there are a lot of people wearing masks in that crowd.
00:09:03.160 I really thought we were over the COVID thing by now.
00:09:05.700 I guess some people will just never let it go.
00:09:07.720 And before we move into our weekly comment roundup,
00:09:09.720 Nenshi wasn't the only one to host a political rally in Edmonton this week.
00:09:13.580 Federal Conservative leader, Pierre Polyev,
00:09:15.200 also made a stop in Edmonton for his axe-the-tax rally.
00:09:18.780 Let's take a quick look at that.
00:09:20.760 Seven premiers across Canada.
00:09:24.300 Seven premiers and 70% of Canadians have called on Trudeau to spike the hype,
00:09:31.000 but they wouldn't have had the courage to do it
00:09:33.260 had there not been a trailblazer leading the way
00:09:36.980 in your common sense Conservative Premier decree.
00:09:40.200 Okay, everyone, and finally, moving into our weekly comment roundup,
00:09:43.340 our first comment here is from a user with a bunch of letters and numbers.
00:09:46.040 I'm not going to read that, but they said,
00:09:47.660 Recall Gondek is a fine idea, 1.00
00:09:49.580 but too many Calgarians are too ignorant of how badly she and Nenshi have harmed Calgary
00:09:53.680 and turned it into an unlikable city with horrific policies that hurt so many citizens.
00:09:59.160 Nenshi and Gondek appear to be of the same mind,
00:10:01.160 and it shows how far Calgary has fallen.
00:10:03.160 I think you're absolutely correct.
00:10:04.060 It seems that most people really just pay attention to federal or even global politics.
00:10:08.660 They also pay a bit of attention to the province
00:10:10.600 when it's actually decisions being made by your municipal government
00:10:13.860 that tend to affect you most.
00:10:15.240 So it makes a lot of sense to go to those city hall meetings
00:10:17.240 and pay a close mind to what is going on right at home.
00:10:21.220 User Elaine says,
00:10:22.520 None of these politicians are worth a cost.
00:10:24.360 Pay reductions are in order.
00:10:25.820 She is, of course, correct.
00:10:27.320 And finally, at Glenn Young says,
00:10:29.460 The vandalism only highlighted the Recall Gondek campaign.
00:10:32.540 I got a few friends to sign up who never would have noticed the campaign
00:10:35.440 if it didn't make the news.
00:10:37.200 Gondek is so scared she'll ban all signature collectors from public spaces the city owns.
00:10:41.740 This only illustrates the authoritarian and totalitarianism of Gondek and her supporters.
00:10:46.400 It's very interesting that the vandalism actually helped to raise the public profile
00:10:49.640 of the Recall Gondek campaign,
00:10:51.500 and that it led to some extra signatures.
00:10:52.940 I hadn't heard that before,
00:10:53.980 so thank you for sharing that story.
00:10:55.720 Okay, everyone, that's all we have time for today.
