00:08:35.480 It's STI Awareness Week, and every day this week, I'm going to be discussing a different STI.

00:08:42.340 Today's topic is HPV, human papillomavirus, which in my opinion is the most misunderstood STI.

00:08:51.020 HPV is by far the most common sexually transmitted infection and almost everybody who has ever been sexually active in their life will be exposed to it at one point or another.

00:09:02.480 Now there are hundreds of different strands of HPV and about 40 different types that affect the genitals and throat and that we consider to be sexually transmitted in nature.

00:09:13.640 Now even plantar warts on the bottom of your feet that you can get during a hot yoga class can be HPV.

00:09:19.880 So not every form of HPV is sexually transmitted. This video is going to discuss the 40 or so types that are.

00:09:26.740 Those strands of HPV that can affect the genitals and the throat are stratified into high-risk strands and low-risk strands.

00:09:35.140 Low-risk strands are more likely to cause things like genital warts or anal warts, which are not pleasant, but they're not necessarily harmful to your health.

00:09:44.860 The high-risk strands of HPV are the ones that can lead to cancer.

00:09:49.860 Various types of cancers, cervical cancers, penile cancers, anal cancer, vulvar cancer, and various head and neck cancers, including esophageal cancer, tonsil and tongue cancer.

00:10:02.100 Now here's the thing, your immune system can clear HPV on its own.

00:10:07.680 And in fact, the vast majority of HPV infections are cleared by the body on its own.

00:10:12.960 Only sometimes will those HPV infections go on to cause cancer, and it's more likely in people who are immune compromised, such as those with uncontrolled HIV.

00:10:22.520 So how is HPV transmitted?

00:10:25.200 It's transmitted via skin-to-skin contact, so you don't even necessarily have to be partaking in penetrative sexual activity to contract it.

00:10:33.440 It can be transmitted through all forms of sexual activity and also through fingers, hands, heavy petting, touching, that kind of thing.

00:10:41.420 So what do we do with this information?

00:10:43.660 You want to make sure that you're always on top of your HPV-related cancer screening.

00:10:47.700 So for folks with a cervix, that is a cervical pap smear to screen for cervical cancer.

00:10:53.560 And for anyone of any gender who is sexually active in the butt, you also want to be getting

00:10:58.780 anal pap smears, which are less common, less known about, but super important.

00:11:03.360 So talk to your provider about that if it applies to you.

00:11:06.920 I also strongly recommend getting the HPV vaccine.

00:11:10.920 It's called Gardasil, and it protects against the nine strains of HPV that are the most likely to cause cancer.

00:11:18.800 So you can still get HPV even if you've gotten the Gardasil vaccine, but you're less likely to get a strain that will go on to cause cancer.

00:11:27.260 So even if you have previously been diagnosed with HPV, even if it's a high risk strain in the past, still get that vaccine as there's some evidence that it can actually also help clear existing HPV.

00:11:39.260 HPV is tricky.

00:11:41.260 It's often misunderstood.

00:11:45.260 All right, so HPV, it seems like based on what I've read, if you're sexually active, most people have it.

00:12:00.260 Now, most people don't, from what I understand, get cancer from it.

00:12:05.260 That does not seem to be the majority.

00:12:08.260 Um, and I go in to get like a yearly pap, like every, every woman does.

00:12:14.260 And I was curious, you know, the real guys that have the answers to how many women have STDs are the gynecologists.

00:12:23.260 That's who I want to talk to off camera, not on camera.

00:12:26.260 Cause they can't, they can't be honest when their customer base is the ones paying them.

00:12:32.260 The customer base are the ones that's throwing it back in these streets.

00:12:38.260 So they can't be super honest and be like, yeah, these women are whores and they all have STDs.

00:12:49.260 So I asked though, um, the last time I was there, what age women tend to get cancer if

00:12:56.260 they get, um, cancer from HPV.

00:13:00.260 And he said it happens like five years later.

00:13:03.260 Most of the time it's in their thirties when, if women get cancer, that's when they get it.

00:13:09.260 So Alex Cooper, who's on call her daddy, apparently she got HPV when she was 23.

00:13:14.260 And I'm like, you must've been throwing it back from the time you were like 15.

00:13:18.260 15.

00:13:19.260 Have you already have cancer at HPV or like on the next stage?

00:13:23.260 I was.

00:13:24.260 So yeah, this is her talking about it.

00:13:25.260 I was sitting in my bedroom and I got a call from my women's health center.

00:13:33.260 And my doctor told me that my results came back in from my recent yearly exam.

00:13:41.260 And lo and behold, I had an STD.

00:13:46.260 I had contracted HPV.

00:13:50.260 And he proceeded to tell me that the strand that she had was one of the kinds that the vaccine

00:14:00.260 does not protect you from.

00:14:03.260 Like an idiot.

00:14:05.260 I ignored the diagnosis.

00:14:10.260 And I felt so paralyzed by the information that he gave me about his ex that I basically just accepted that I was going to have this for the rest of my life.

00:14:22.260 And I was screwed and I fucked myself and like every single pap smear for the next four years came back HPV positive.

00:14:35.260 So and what I understand about pap smears is because there's so many strands, they only they don't test women for the actual in general.

00:14:45.260 They don't test women for the actual strands because usually it clears on its own.

00:14:50.260 But it's so if she was testing positive, that means she had like the it had taken the next step.

00:15:00.260 I think anyways, it had taken the next step from being just like a positive test.

00:15:07.260 It like the cells must have been different.

00:15:09.260 I think.

00:15:10.260 Oh, I went in for this procedure.

00:15:13.260 I still hadn't told my mom or any of my friends.

00:15:19.260 And most importantly, I hadn't told Matt.

00:15:22.260 Yeah.

00:15:23.260 So she was throwing it back with HPV and not telling anybody.

00:15:26.260 This is why this is why I keep telling you guys.

00:15:30.260 I'm telling you the people with this stuff.

00:15:35.260 And I've done in depth interviews with these people.

00:15:40.260 And the way they see it is, look, I want to have a sex life.

00:23:44.260 These results were negative for the highest risk HPV.

00:23:47.260 However, they did show the presence of high risk HPV cells.

00:23:50.260 So I think that means it's like stage two of it.
