00:01:51.000 And it looked like it was going to be a beautiful day.

00:01:54.000 And in Israel, it was a religious holiday.

00:01:57.000 And few people were working as a result.

00:02:03.000 A few were ready for what was about to happen.

00:02:06.000 Around 6.30, as the sun was coming up,

00:02:09.000 tiny figures could be seen in the sky, coming from the west, coming closer.

00:02:16.000 And at the site of the Nova music festival in the south, in the Negev,

00:02:20.000 some sirens started to sound, and the music stopped.

00:02:24.000 And those in attendance looked up, and they saw killers on their motorized paragliders coming towards them.

00:02:32.000 They started to run, and it was already too late.

00:02:36.000 Some other killers had arrived too, in Toyota SUVs, and wearing military fatigues,

00:02:42.000 and carrying GoPro digital cameras to record what they were about to do.

00:02:48.000 An estimated 4,000 members of assorted terrorist groups, Hamas, Popular Front for Liberation of Palestine,

00:02:55.000 others spilled across the border, along with 2,000 or so Palestinian citizens.

00:03:01.000 And they broke through the fences in more than a hundred places,

00:03:05.000 near army bases or kibbutz farm communities.

00:03:09.000 And their atrocities would last for hours.

00:03:13.000 1,200 murders of men, women, children, and babies.

00:03:17.000 More than a hundred rapes of women and girls.

00:03:21.000 250 taken hostage, including infants.

00:03:24.000 Most of the murders would happen at NOVA to people in their 10s and 20s.

00:03:30.000 They set fire to children, beheaded babies.

00:05:08.000 Why have so many, Generation Z and Millennials in particular, why have so many embraced them, 1.00

00:05:14.000 killing our streets and computer screens with things we thought would never happen again?

00:05:20.000 I've written five books about racism and anti-Semitism.

00:05:23.000 I've filed hundreds of newspaper columns and news stories about the subject.

00:05:30.000 I've been on the receiving end of plenty of death threats from haters over the years as a result.

00:05:35.000 And all that time, I've formed the opinion that anti-Semitism is a shape-shifter.

00:05:40.000 It isn't practiced by one ideology.

00:05:43.000 It's embraced at different times by every ideology, right and left.

00:05:48.000 It is an ideology unto itself.

00:05:51.000 In fact, one that is older than capitalism, communism and all the other isms.

00:05:59.000 It endures like a pestilence for which we have no cure.

00:06:55.000 All I can think about is the documentary filmmaker who came to see me a few weeks ago.

00:07:01.000 He was doing his documentary about the history of anti-Semitism in Canada.

00:07:06.000 And near the end, he told me he grew up with a Jewish mom who always told them to have a suitcase packed by the door in case the killer is returned.

00:07:16.000 In case he had to leave quickly.

00:07:20.000 But this is Canada, I said to him.

00:07:23.000 Like, it's 2024.

00:07:24.000 It's not Germany in 1939.

00:07:27.000 Yes, he said.

00:07:29.000 And then he took out his wallet and he pulled a small crucifix from it.

00:07:37.000 This, he said to me, is so I can pretend not to be a Jew.

00:12:05.700 over 100 women and girls raped, 250 people taken hostage,

00:12:13.900 and soon thereafter, the war began between Israel and Hamas,

00:12:19.160 and now we have the war against Hezbollah.

00:12:21.780 Where were you on that day, and what do you remember

00:12:26.120 about what you thought and what you felt?

00:12:30.000 I remember that day very well.

00:12:32.440 Today, October 6th, is the birthday of my favorite woman in the world,

00:12:40.520 the mother of my child, my ex-wife, and still one of my best friends,

00:12:44.300 Ilana Rabinovich, and I remember we celebrated her birthday.

00:12:50.920 I was staying with her.

00:12:52.640 I was, as I've talked about on this podcast, sort of resetting my life,

00:12:56.960 and she was supporting me in making some big changes to my life

00:13:01.640 and getting my nervous system back in shape after years

00:13:06.200 and traveling in war zones like the one in Israel and Gaza today.

00:13:10.960 And, you know, I was starting to see the light and some hope,

00:13:15.800 and then we woke up the next day, and the horror, the horror and sadness.

00:13:22.920 And I remember I couldn't quite believe that it had actually happened.

00:13:31.080 So I called a bunch of friends who've served or are still working

00:13:35.940 in the Israeli government and military apparatus that I just knew from back in the day,

00:13:40.440 and I called them and asked them what they thought.

00:13:45.280 And by today's standard, they were quite optimistic.

00:13:48.520 They said, it'll be a short war, we'll get into Gaza, we'll solve the problem, 0.80

00:13:54.300 and, you know, we don't foresee this becoming a regional or a perpetual conflict.

00:14:02.140 Well, so much has happened since to betray that risk of hope.

00:14:09.180 And it's been such a tough year, obviously, for our friends in Israel.

00:14:14.000 I also want to say for the civilians who have nothing to do with Hamas in Gaza

00:14:21.720 and the Lebanese who have nothing to do with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

00:18:16.260 I think more than anything when I get together with my Jewish friends,

00:18:20.040 they're confounded by the notion that everybody gives lip service

00:18:26.320 for Israel's right to exist and its right to defend itself.
