It's the Kinsella cast starring Warren Kinsella.
00:00:19.640
Hey, it's Warren. Welcome to the Kinsella cast from Kelowna, British Columbia. I'm out here
00:00:25.280
to see my brother and my sister-in-law and my nephew, but particularly my two oldest and
00:00:34.300
best friends, Raspier Shank and Rockin' Al McDonald. And I've got them on the show. So
00:00:40.080
we're going to talk about how we met and the punk rock scene that we were part of and we
00:00:45.460
actually helped to start. And a lot of laughs. And they're going to play some songs and you'll
00:00:51.960
hear a little bit about my sorted salad days. Also have Ben Maroney and Chris Chapin and
00:01:00.280
I talking and Ben and I kind of mix it up over Jimmy Kimmel. I'm pretty fucking pissed off
0.98
00:01:07.560
about Jimmy Kimmel. So any of you conservatives out there claiming to be in favor of free
0.98
00:01:13.980
speech? I don't want to hear it because I don't believe you guys actually do anymore. So it's
00:01:19.560
a shorter show. I'm going to play some old punk rock, the stuff that influenced Alan and
00:01:24.760
Pierre and I and us back in the day. And so thanks for tuning in. And, you know, when
00:01:32.360
they finally do something that you've been demanding they do, applaud. So let's give some
00:01:37.600
credit. Let's give some credit to the Kearney government on anti-Semitism, on an issue that
0.96
00:01:42.880
is critically important to the Jewish minority. They finally have done something right. And for
00:01:48.600
the longest time, it seemed like they were incapable of it. Like from the outset, Prime Minister
00:01:53.400
Mark Carney and his liberal government have orbited between either callow indifference or outright
00:01:59.640
hostility towards Jews and the Jewish state. And next week, so for example, the Kearney liberals
00:02:06.520
plan to recognize a state, Palestine, that is run by a designated terrorist entity, Hamas. For that to
00:02:14.180
happen, they lamely insisted a number of conditions be met. None have been, not one. But they plan to go
00:02:21.940
ahead with recognizing Hamas-led Palestine just the same. And a few days ago, Kearney's foreign affairs
00:02:29.220
minister, Anita Nand, said they were evaluating ties with Israel, a historic ally. Back in July, his
00:02:37.220
government accused Israel of violating international law with no evidence. They've condemned Israel for,
00:02:42.640
quote, escalating the conflict in Gaza, end quote, but not Hamas, mind you, which broke a ceasefire and
00:02:48.960
started the war on October 7th, 2023, with the slaughter of hundreds and thousands of civilians in
00:02:55.680
Israel. Like, Kearney's government has called Israel's attempt to eliminate Hamas leaders in Qatar,
00:03:03.120
which is one of the leading sponsors of terror in the world, an intolerable expansion of violence and an
00:03:09.280
affront to Qatar's sovereignty, quote-unquote. And notably, the firebombing of Canadian synagogues
0.80
00:03:14.720
and the Canadian Jewish schools being shot up, the explosion in anti-Semitic violence in Canadian soil,
00:03:20.080
all have been followed by lots of tweets of the thoughts and prayers variety, but press this little
00:03:26.480
action. Like we say, Canada isn't the Jewish state's enemy, per se, but it certainly is no longer the
00:03:34.240
Jewish state's ally, which makes recent moves by the Kearney government all the more remarkable.
00:03:40.880
One is my friend Vince Kasparo, the Liberal MP for Tobacco Lakeshore, announcing out of the blue
00:03:48.160
that the anti-Semitic, pro-Hamas, pro-Hezbollah rap group, Irish rap group, NICAP, was not going to be
00:03:55.600
allowed to come to Canada. That was welcome. But then when nobody was expecting it this week,
00:04:00.400
Kearney and his government let it be known they plan to do something that is really important.
00:04:05.120
They leaked to select media that they intend to make it a crime to intentionally promote
00:04:09.440
hatred against identifiable groups in public using certain hateful or terror-related symbols. And that,
00:04:16.160
if true, and if implemented by police and prosecutors, would be a very big deal indeed,
00:04:21.760
like for Muslims as well as Jews, by the way. Now other parts of the Liberals' criminal code
00:04:26.800
amendments like willfully intimidating and obstructing individuals entering places of worship,
00:04:32.880
cultural community-centered schools, that's something they promised during the election.
00:04:37.440
And it basically just follows what a lot of municipalities in Canada have already done.
00:04:42.960
But the Kearney Liberals also plan to eliminate the requirement that consent be attained
00:04:47.840
from provincial attorneys general before hate charges can be laid. And that is a significant change.
00:04:54.720
It's been advocated for by human rights groups for a long time, but that is also good.
00:04:59.520
But like prosecuting neo-Nazis for displaying swastikas or jihadists for waving around Hamas
00:05:06.560
banners, like that's new. That's unprecedented. And for Jews and Jewish groups who have been
0.97
00:05:12.400
overwhelmingly the target of such displays, it is far-reaching. It's going to have a significant
00:05:17.920
impact. Like online, just to give you an example, anti-Israel or anti-Semitic content outnumbers pro-Israel
00:05:25.520
or pro-Jewish content by a factor of 50 to 1. 50 to 1. And in the streets and on university campuses,
00:05:33.520
union halls, in the halls of academia, extreme anti-Semitism is ubiquitous, as we know.
00:05:40.320
Too often that Jew hatred is accompanied by, you know, the Red Triangle, which Hamas uses to identify
00:05:47.680
Jews they have marked for death. The Red Hand, which celebrates the slaughter of Jews during the
0.96
00:05:53.040
Second Intifada. Or the flags and banners of Hamas or Hezbollah or the Houthis or Iran
00:05:58.480
or any of the many listed jihadist terrorist groups. Like in an interview, I spoke to Lauren Post
00:06:05.280
a while ago. She is the symbols expert for the Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism.
00:06:11.680
And she said to me, you know, they put a lot of care and thought into the haters, into how a message
00:06:17.280
or image get presented. And, you know, and to use with what constituencies, because some of these symbols
00:06:25.200
have a powerful emotional impact with their supporters. And she said, you know, after October
00:06:31.120
7th, for example, Hamas started putting red triangles over their targets, the people they
00:06:36.880
wanted to kill. So whether that was Israeli soldiers or military equipment or a Jew or whatever. And that
0.97
00:06:42.960
turned the red triangle into a symbol of resistance and something actually much more scary. And it was all
00:06:49.440
very intentional, she told me. The intentional use of hate symbols to intimidate and terrorize Canadian
00:06:55.440
Jews is metastasized like a virus, a terrible virus from coast to coast. And finally, like surprisingly,
1.00
00:07:04.080
the government of Mark Carney appears to want to do something about it. And God knows the Carney
00:07:09.760
liberals are not perfect. They've already made lots of mistakes on this file. But on this one thing,
00:07:16.800
this important thing, as well as NECAP, and the Attorney General thing, on this file this week,
00:07:23.280
they deserve some credit. At long last, they've done a good and important thing to eliminate hate.
00:32:51.440
And you know, it's really funny how every Friday
00:32:53.680
We have the Friday edition of This Week in Politics
00:33:00.840
Let's say hi to Chris Chapin, political commentator
00:33:04.800
And Warren Kinsella, former special advisor to Jean Chrétien
00:33:12.980
Meanwhile, I just had a bunch of timbits a few minutes ago
00:33:28.940
I've got lots of actual real-life examples to talk about
00:33:34.260
This was a story that popped up late in our show yesterday
00:33:37.060
So we really didn't have a chance to get into it
00:33:38.980
I'm very glad to have you both here to talk about
00:33:43.200
The statement of Canada's intervention before the Supreme Court of Canada
00:33:50.520
To the use of the notwithstanding clause by the provinces, I suppose
00:33:54.180
So there's a couple of ways I want to attack this
00:34:09.100
When a lot of us were hoping we'd see bail reform
00:34:18.600
I actually don't know if I have the answer to that
00:34:22.280
I feel like this has really come out of nowhere
00:34:26.840
As is, you know, a pushback on Bill 21 in Quebec
00:34:37.420
You know, any time they were campaigning in Quebec
00:34:58.580
Yeah, Warren, maybe you can add some context to this
00:35:16.860
I don't want to disagree with my conservative friends
00:35:33.600
And, you know, conservatives suddenly concerned
00:35:41.300
The beginnings of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms
00:35:45.580
You know, a request made by Premier Lougheed from Alberta
00:36:12.760
To use it to trample on the rights of minorities
1.00
00:36:19.860
Now, they have to go back every five years to renew it
00:36:24.920
It basically is an abomination at the center of the Charter of Rights
00:36:29.700
We don't really have a constitutional protection for minorities
0.99
00:36:46.220
And I think that's a reasonable question to ask
00:37:05.860
A province's ability to use the notwithstanding clause
00:37:08.740
I don't see how this doesn't stick to the Liberal brand
00:37:18.340
But that to me testifies to how legitimate it is
00:37:29.680
Because in Quebec it is not going to be popular
00:37:46.040
It's what governments in Canada are allowed to do
00:37:58.580
Mr. Chapin, you're shaking your head a little bit there?
00:38:28.140
So I haven't had a lot of time to think about it
00:38:34.580
Where the pressure was mounting on the government
00:38:37.340
To do this so early in this parliamentary session
00:38:47.360
Look, if this is the beginning of the slippery slope
00:38:51.140
There's no way it's not going to be traced back to
