00:00:00.000 It's the KinsellaCast starring Warren Kinsella.
00:00:20.780 Hey, it's Warren. Welcome to the KinsellaCast.
00:00:22.940 By the time you hear this, I will be folded like a pretzel on a seat, loosely defined as seat, on an Air Canada flight to England.
00:00:36.360 Ian and I are going there for the week, and so I figured I'd do a podcast ahead of time.
00:00:42.740 And next week's we're going to be doing From Over There, and then heading back for the holiday season.
00:00:51.100 So, welcome to KinsellaCast. Great show this week.
00:00:55.040 Brian Lilly, of course, and Karim Asad, regulars, but also Alex Pearson, Chris Chapin, some other folks, and some great music.
00:01:03.740 I've got a fry cook, an oil field operator, a concrete surface decorator, and a kid's baseball coach, which is Dexter and the Moon Rocks.
00:01:15.860 They're from West Texas, and they've got their super, super catchy tune, sat in Carolina to start things off.
00:01:23.140 Then I've got Hot Water Music, who I played before, who I love, and with their song, Much Love.
00:01:30.800 And Hot Water Music has a big Canadian connection, because Chris Cresswell, of the Flatliners, the pride of Whitby,
00:01:38.600 is a sometime guitarist and vocalist with Hot Water Music.
00:01:43.700 Even though they're from Florida, he's from Whitby, they all came together for punk rock.
00:01:48.740 The Head, this crazed tune by Jeff Rosenstock.
00:01:53.340 I saw Jeff Rosenstock for the first time last year, and it was a blast.
00:01:58.220 I just wandered in. It was just down the street, so I figured, what the hell, I've got nothing else to do.
00:02:02.320 And I walked in, and he was wearing pink sweatpants, and I thought, what is not to love about this guy?
00:02:09.380 Fraulein are next. They are from Northern Ireland, and they're Dutch as well.
00:02:17.600 Joni Samuels and Karsten Vandertoll.
00:02:20.680 And they kind of can do loud, it's this kind of pixies, you know, quiet, loud, quiet, loud thing.
00:02:28.940 But they make it work, and they've got a bit of PJ Harvey mixed in there as well.
00:02:34.920 And I've got their song, Big Cool, and then finally I've got Little Star.
00:02:38.660 They're a six-piece from Australia.
00:02:41.520 It's psych rock, punk rock, doom metal, there's weird stuff in there.
00:02:47.880 A couple albums, Being Close and Little Star, and this song I'm playing for you is called Badminton.
00:02:52.280 So, Ottawa, November 2025, members of the RCMP's central region, along with some cops from New York and the OPP, make an arrest.
00:03:03.420 And the accused has been editing and posting ISIS videos.
00:03:09.020 And the accused has been trying to get property in the Toronto area to work with arms to get better aim.
00:03:17.280 It was terrorism and a dangerous threat, the cops said.
00:03:20.720 The accused, a teenager.
00:03:23.440 Montreal, August 2025, RCMP again, along with something called the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team,
00:03:31.100 make an arrest of an individual who they said intended to carry out at least one attack on behalf of the Islamic State,
00:03:38.020 charged with providing property for terrorism, participation in terror group, facilitating terrorist activity.
00:03:44.360 17 years old.
00:03:47.700 Ottawa, again, February 2024, RCMP and the various intelligence agencies arrest two individuals who they said planned to violent,
00:03:57.800 so it was a mass casualty event.
00:04:00.220 They planned to attack Jewish persons in Ottawa, possibly through the detonation of an explosive device at a pro-Israel rally in Parliament Hill.
00:04:09.560 And he and I were there.
00:04:10.780 And, anyway, it didn't happen.
00:04:14.160 Lots of other bad stuff happened there.
00:04:16.220 But they charged these two with conspiring to commit murder, facilitating terrorist activity, trying to get firearms, possessing an explosive substance.
00:04:27.540 They had metal ball bearings to cause maximum damage to those of us who were on the Hill.
00:04:32.060 And they were 17 and 15 years old.
00:04:36.440 There are many, many other stories like that, guys.
00:04:39.760 Like, between April 2023 and March 2024, so basically less than a year, the RCMP made 25 arrests,
00:04:48.640 charging suspects with 83 terrorism-related offenses,
00:04:52.700 which, you know, is basically an increase of 500% from the year before.
00:04:58.400 And most of them were young males.
00:05:00.520 And most of them were motivated by Jew hatred.
00:05:03.860 And, like, things got worse in late 2024.
00:05:06.680 So the RCMP were worried, and they wrote to their boss, who was then Public Safety Minister David McGinty, who was a great guy.
00:05:14.560 And they said to David, Canadian police have foiled six terrorist plots in the last 12 months alone,
00:05:21.460 with arrests from Edmonton to Ottawa to Toronto.
00:05:24.560 And they said online platforms were contributing to a substantial youth engagement with violent extremist ideologies.
00:05:32.580 And just a few days ago, CSIS, the new guy who runs them, a guy named Dan Rogers,
00:05:39.180 he was previously a security and intelligence advisor to the feds.
00:05:44.120 Now he's the director of CSIS.
00:05:47.300 He spoke quietly, but he said radicalized youth can cause the same harm as radicalized adults.
00:05:52.960 He said, obviously, only a small number of youths or adults with extreme views resort to violence.
00:05:58.580 But when they do, he said, the consequences are devastating.
00:06:02.240 Since 2014, there have been 20 violent extremist attacks in Canada, resulting in 29 deaths and 60 victims injured.
00:06:13.940 And the number of deaths, guys, could be much, much higher.
00:06:17.060 But for the work of CSIS and the RCMP and police agencies, it would be.
00:06:21.060 So why is this happening so much?
00:06:23.620 And Rogers said it's eroding social cohesion, increasing polarization, significant global events,
00:06:31.400 provide a fertile ground for radicalization, and turn people towards, these young people, towards violence.
00:06:37.880 And they use technology, he said, to do so secretly and anonymously,
00:06:42.080 which makes it hard for the police to find them.
00:06:44.100 And it's not just happening in Canada, in the United States, in Europe.
00:06:47.320 The same ominous trend is seen.
00:06:49.880 Angry young men, an army of them, orbiting into a world of conspiracy theories and then extreme violence.
00:06:57.640 Like a few years ago, I can tell you, because I've written books about it, as you know,
00:07:01.600 it was skinheads and neo-Nazis.
00:07:04.280 And these days, they were mostly aspiring young jihadists from the radical Islamic ummah, you know, the Muslim world.
00:07:13.040 And they're all youthful and male and motivated by a bottomless rage and a fanatical hatred of Jews.
00:07:19.440 So in my book, The Hidden Hand, which is coming out in February, you can pre-order it now if you want to,
00:07:24.920 identify the main source of anti-Semitic terror now manifesting itself across Western democracy.
00:07:30.600 And as, like Roger said, it's online.
00:07:33.640 It's online radicalization.
00:07:35.580 Like ISIS or Hamas or any of those monsters, they don't need to meet a young person in person.
00:07:44.560 They've gotten so good at what they do, they can radicalize him over an internet connection anywhere.
00:07:51.500 It can take just weeks.
00:07:52.320 So on the very first day of this year, all-American boy from Texas, years of decorated military service,
00:07:59.120 got into his truck, drove to New Orleans, and once there, slammed his pickup into New Year's partiers in New Orleans,
00:08:06.840 and he slaughtered 14 people.
00:08:09.400 He had been a Baptist who converted to Islam, changed his name, and he had an ISIS flag in the back of his truck.
00:08:17.620 But the threat is all around us now, in every town, in every city.
00:08:24.120 Angry young men are seething about Jews, about those who are unlike them,
00:08:28.740 and learning the bloody catechism of anti-Semitism and hate.
00:08:33.360 They're peering at videos on their devices in the dark, and they're having fantasies about murder.
00:08:39.400 And they are coming for us all.
00:08:41.520 I don't want to stay if you're gonna treat me this way.
00:09:11.520 I don't want to stay if you're gonna leave me someday.
00:09:18.760 But I can't complain.
00:09:25.020 I guess I'm just too much to take.
00:09:29.340 I'm set in Carolina, looking for a way to find y'all.
00:09:47.620 I'm spinning round in circles.
00:09:50.700 I feel like I'm prone to be a waste of your space.
00:10:14.860 I feel like I'm sick of you being stuck in your ways.
00:10:21.140 But you still complain.
00:10:25.560 Yeah, you're just too much to take.
00:10:31.560 I feel like I'm sick of you being stuck in your way.
00:10:38.500 I feel like I'm stuck in your way.
00:10:39.880 I feel like I'm sick of your space.
00:10:44.340 I feel like I'm not too much to take your way.
00:10:48.940 I'm spinning round in circles
00:10:53.640 You know I'm not that verbal
00:11:15.500 I'm sat in Carolina
00:11:18.220 Looking for a way to find you
00:11:24.760 I'm spinning round in circles
00:11:31.240 You know I'm not that verbal
00:11:37.120 And we're back
00:11:47.540 We're back with Brian Lilly
00:11:48.640 And he and I are talking a little bit earlier
00:11:51.280 Than we do on the weekend
00:11:53.020 Usually we talk on Sundays
00:11:54.440 We're talking on Saturday
00:11:55.480 Because I'm leaving for merry old England on Sunday
00:11:58.520 And wanted to get his voluminous knowledge
00:12:03.460 His vast brain at work
00:12:05.380 On a number of hot issues this week
00:12:07.200 Most notably the deal
00:12:10.000 I guess you can call it a deal
00:12:11.920 Or an agreement
00:12:12.720 The MOU
00:12:13.740 Between the government of Canada
00:12:15.920 And the government of Alberta
00:12:17.260 On finally getting a much needed pipeline
00:12:23.660 A pathway for Alberta bitumen
00:12:27.460 To the BC coast
00:12:30.860 And there's all kinds of moving parts in it
00:12:34.520 You've talked to Daniel Smith
00:12:36.440 About it
00:12:37.960 Hopefully you get a chance
00:12:39.100 To speak to Mark Carney about it
00:12:40.560 What's your take on
00:12:42.020 All of it this week
00:12:43.740 Is it a good thing
00:12:44.500 Or a bad thing?
00:12:46.040 I think it's a win for Alberta
00:12:47.580 And a win for Canada
00:12:49.400 Now if your name's David Eby
00:12:51.740 Or Stephen Guibault
00:12:53.240 Or Elizabeth May
00:12:55.600 This is the worst thing ever
00:12:57.580 And they're going to sit in the sackcloth
00:13:00.320 In their mud huts
00:13:01.120 And complain about the fact that
00:13:02.640 We're doing things we should have been doing
00:13:05.520 Look, overall
00:13:07.480 I wish we didn't have to have these kinds of deals
00:13:09.560 I wish we still had a functioning government
00:13:12.740 And bureaucratic system
00:13:13.940 We have saddled ourselves
00:13:16.780 With all kinds of ridiculous ways
00:13:19.320 Of doing things
00:13:20.260 Thanks mainly due to
00:13:21.860 Justin Trudeau's
00:13:22.900 Ten years in office
00:13:24.120 Some bad judicial decisions
00:13:26.300 Things like that
00:13:27.100 But Alberta had
00:13:29.360 Legitimate cripes
00:13:30.640 We need to do something
00:13:34.040 To pivot away from an over-reliance
00:13:37.200 On the United States
00:13:38.240 And Mark Carney went in
00:13:39.820 And put together a deal
00:13:40.860 That allows us to do that
00:13:42.080 And I hear all the criticisms
00:13:44.240 I've been accused of
00:13:45.420 Not knowing a damn thing about Alberta
00:13:47.640 You don't know Western Canada
00:13:49.280 This is just a head fake
00:13:52.400 This isn't going to work
00:13:53.260 Well, the Premier of the province
00:13:55.420 Tells me it will
00:13:56.200 And spoke to Premier Smith
00:13:59.800 For about 15-20 minutes
00:14:01.520 On Friday night
00:14:02.780 This is just after she got booed
00:14:04.580 At her UCP conference
00:14:06.400 Which I want to talk about
00:14:07.860 And you know
00:14:11.700 She's saying good things
00:14:12.840 I was on the phone
00:14:13.580 For about 45 minutes
00:14:15.680 Last night
00:14:16.280 With a friend
00:14:18.080 Who works in the energy sector
00:14:19.420 In Calgary
00:14:20.300 Who said
00:14:21.400 You should have seen
00:14:23.020 She was at the announcement
00:14:25.380 By the Premier
00:14:27.460 Then she went to the luncheon
00:14:29.520 With Carney
00:14:30.180 And just elation
00:14:32.800 Within the Alberta industry
00:14:34.520 So, you know
00:14:36.580 Are people right
00:14:37.940 To be skeptical
00:14:38.880 That a pipeline
00:14:39.840 Will ever be built?
00:14:40.980 Well, after the last
00:14:42.140 10-15 years
00:14:43.180 Yeah
00:14:43.520 I guess that skepticism
00:14:45.760 Is warranted
00:14:46.660 But there's real deadlines
00:14:48.240 I mean
00:14:48.600 You and I
00:14:50.220 Have seen these things before
00:14:52.720 You've participated
00:14:53.600 I'm sure
00:14:54.140 In drawing up
00:14:54.900 MOUs from governments
00:14:56.100 And they often mean nothing
00:14:57.360 And say less
00:14:58.180 This one
00:14:59.820 Is incredibly detailed
00:15:01.500 It has timelines
00:15:03.380 It has deadlines
00:15:04.640 As soon as
00:15:06.280 April 1st
00:15:07.360 Of next year
00:15:08.220 And then July 1st
00:15:10.260 Of next year
00:15:10.880 And
00:15:12.120 I believe
00:15:13.540 That Daniel Smith
00:15:14.760 Is going to find
00:15:15.540 A private sector proponent
00:15:17.100 For this pipeline
00:15:19.400 Or more than one
00:15:20.840 And announce all of this
00:15:22.800 By July 1st
00:15:24.780 And then
00:15:25.180 You know
00:15:25.800 Yes
00:15:26.360 All the work
00:15:27.560 Of consulting
00:15:28.140 With indigenous groups
00:15:29.260 And consulting with BC
00:15:30.360 Of course that's all
00:15:31.220 Going to take place
00:15:31.940 But this deal
00:15:33.380 Gives a clear path
00:15:34.860 Also
00:15:35.720 Gets rid of the
00:15:36.560 Clean energy regulations
00:15:37.760 The clean electricity
00:15:39.580 Regulations
00:15:40.200 That we're going to come in
00:15:41.060 Gets rid of the
00:15:41.880 Emissions cap
00:15:42.780 Says that if
00:15:43.880 A pipeline is built
00:15:44.780 There will be
00:15:45.200 An adjustment
00:15:45.920 To the
00:15:47.840 Tanker band
00:15:48.580 To allow for
00:15:50.040 The
00:15:51.680 Bitumen
00:15:52.640 To be exported
00:15:53.520 To Asia
00:15:54.060 You know
00:15:54.860 We've got
00:15:57.460 All these people
00:15:58.140 Going around
00:15:58.640 Talking about
00:15:59.180 The huge risk
00:16:00.080 Of
00:16:00.400 You know
00:16:01.200 Killing off
00:16:01.820 Our coast
00:16:02.440 And killing off
00:16:03.160 BC's pristine
00:16:04.100 Wilderness
00:16:04.580 As if we're
00:16:05.640 Dealing with
00:16:06.120 1950s pipeline
00:16:07.420 Technology
00:16:08.140 And 1950s boats
00:16:09.460 Things are a lot
00:16:10.220 Different now
00:16:10.860 The Exxon Valdez
00:16:12.260 Was a long time ago
00:16:13.300 We've learned
00:16:15.700 A lot from then
00:16:16.540 Exactly
00:16:17.260 And then before
00:16:18.360 People start
00:16:19.100 Popping off
00:16:19.840 About it
00:16:20.240 Well God knows
00:16:20.900 They've started already
00:16:21.780 Encouraged them
00:16:22.800 To do what
00:16:23.240 Brian has
00:16:23.720 Actually done
00:16:24.280 Which is read
00:16:24.940 The MOU
00:16:25.540 Because it is
00:16:26.620 Quite detailed
00:16:27.460 And it is quite
00:16:28.020 Specific
00:16:28.640 But absent
00:16:29.560 From it
00:16:30.100 Is the
00:16:30.940 Political
00:16:31.340 Dimension
00:16:31.940 And so
00:16:33.280 There's been
00:16:33.700 A range
00:16:34.300 In response
00:16:35.000 To Premier
00:16:35.680 Smith
00:16:36.360 And Prime
00:16:37.080 Minister
00:16:37.360 Carney
00:16:37.680 So far
00:16:38.240 Carney
00:16:39.060 Was being
00:16:39.800 Getting
00:16:41.120 Standing
00:16:41.520 Ovations
00:16:41.980 You pointed
00:16:42.520 Out
00:16:42.820 In Calgary
00:16:44.140 And being
00:16:45.120 Applauded
00:16:45.660 When's the last
00:16:46.540 Time that
00:16:47.360 Happened to a
00:16:48.140 Liberal leader
00:16:48.700 And then
00:16:49.400 But then
00:16:49.980 He's also
00:16:50.560 Lost a
00:16:51.060 Cabinet
00:16:51.340 Minister
00:16:51.720 A senior
00:16:52.260 Cabinet
00:16:52.920 Minister
00:16:53.220 His Quebec
00:16:53.720 Lieutenant
00:16:54.220 Stephen
00:16:54.620 Guilbeault
00:16:55.120 Smith
00:16:55.980 Has been
00:16:56.620 Applauded
00:16:57.240 By guys
00:16:57.820 Like me
00:16:58.340 On air
00:16:59.140 And in the
00:16:59.640 Open
00:16:59.880 I've been
00:17:00.200 A critic
00:17:00.580 Of her
00:17:00.960 For a
00:17:01.240 Long time
00:17:01.660 I plotted
00:17:02.560 What she
00:17:03.040 Did here
00:17:03.660 And what
00:17:04.000 She pulled
00:17:04.620 Off
00:17:05.000 But she
00:17:05.720 Got booed
00:17:06.240 As you
00:17:06.580 Just pointed
00:17:07.040 Out
00:17:07.500 Before
00:17:08.540 Her own
00:17:09.060 UCP
00:17:09.800 So there's
00:17:11.480 A mixed
00:17:11.840 Bag here
00:17:12.440 What are
00:17:12.820 The opportunities
00:17:13.620 And what
00:17:14.060 Are the
00:17:14.320 Threats
00:17:14.860 For those
00:17:15.560 Two
00:17:15.780 Politicians
00:17:16.380 And for
00:17:16.900 David
00:17:17.220 Eby
00:17:17.580 Who is
00:17:19.180 An important
00:17:19.640 Player in
00:17:20.160 This whole
00:17:20.460 Process
00:17:20.800 Too
00:17:21.200 Well
00:17:22.780 David
00:17:23.120 Eby
00:17:23.500 Is
00:17:25.620 Potentially
00:17:26.580 Facing
00:17:27.000 An election
00:17:27.480 He needs
00:17:28.720 To keep
00:17:29.180 His
00:17:29.720 Mudhut
00:17:30.200 Brigade
00:17:30.700 Onside
00:17:31.340 That's
00:17:31.700 That's
00:17:32.160 The nickname
00:17:32.600 By the way
00:17:33.040 That I got
00:17:33.420 From John
00:17:33.900 Horgan
00:17:34.400 When he
00:17:35.280 Was premier
00:17:35.840 To describe
00:17:36.940 Guys like
00:17:37.480 David
00:17:37.820 Eby
00:17:38.140 He called
00:17:38.840 Them
00:17:38.980 The Mudhut
00:17:39.560 Brigade
00:17:40.040 And so
00:17:41.800 I love
00:17:42.620 That and I
00:17:43.040 Use it
00:17:43.380 Every chance
00:17:44.060 I get
00:17:44.460 So
00:17:46.060 I look
00:17:49.200 At the
00:17:49.420 Polling
00:17:49.800 In BC
00:17:50.220 And I
00:17:50.760 Think
00:17:51.020 That there
00:17:51.480 Is
00:17:52.380 Support
00:17:53.100 For this
00:17:53.620 Strong
00:17:54.200 Support
00:17:54.480 I think
00:17:54.800 The opposition
00:17:55.360 Is being
00:17:55.840 Greatly
00:17:56.780 Overstated
00:17:57.900 Just like
00:17:58.400 It's being
00:17:58.800 Overstated
00:17:59.600 Day in
00:18:00.080 And day
00:18:00.420 Out
00:18:00.580 On CBC
00:18:01.140 About how
00:18:01.660 First Nations
00:18:02.200 Aren't on
00:18:02.640 Board
00:18:02.880 With this
00:18:03.320 And they
00:18:03.980 Said that
00:18:04.280 During
00:18:04.520 Northern
00:18:04.820 Gateway
00:18:05.280 And yet
00:18:06.200 The company
00:18:06.720 That was
00:18:07.100 Proposing
00:18:07.720 The pipeline
00:18:08.300 Had agreements
00:18:09.100 With pretty
00:18:10.640 Much every
00:18:11.240 Indigenous
00:18:11.620 Group along
00:18:12.440 The path
00:18:13.100 Of the
00:18:13.320 Pipeline
00:18:13.780 Where they
00:18:14.160 Would benefit
00:18:14.720 Economically
00:18:15.380 From it
00:18:15.800 So we
00:18:17.260 Got to
00:18:17.520 Separate
00:18:17.860 Fact from
00:18:18.320 Fiction
00:18:18.700 On the
00:18:19.520 Political
00:18:19.780 Side
00:18:20.200 You know
00:18:20.860 Why is
00:18:21.400 Pierre
00:18:21.600 Polyev
00:18:22.020 Coming out
00:18:22.500 Against
00:18:22.780 Something
00:18:23.220 That the
00:18:23.900 Premier of
00:18:24.320 The province
00:18:24.760 He now
00:18:25.120 Represents
00:18:25.720 Alberta
00:18:26.420 Not Ontario
00:18:27.280 Is saying
00:18:28.500 It's such a
00:18:28.960 Good thing
00:18:29.300 For the
00:18:30.220 Province
00:18:30.580 For the
00:18:30.900 Energy
00:18:31.160 Industry
00:18:31.560 Well because
00:18:32.600 It's a
00:18:32.960 Threat to
00:18:33.340 Him
00:18:33.620 And the
00:18:34.460 CPC
00:18:35.780 How so
00:18:36.860 Well if
00:18:38.280 Mark Carney
00:18:38.780 Is successful
00:18:39.280 On this
00:18:39.840 Alright
00:18:41.040 He's got
00:18:41.460 Two seats
00:18:41.980 Out of
00:18:42.220 37
00:18:42.760 In Alberta
00:18:43.300 Right now
00:18:43.840 Does he
00:18:44.780 End up
00:18:45.000 With five
00:18:45.360 Or six
00:18:45.720 Seats
00:18:46.020 Do they
00:18:46.920 Pick off
00:18:47.400 Calgary
00:18:47.820 Centre
00:18:48.260 Calgary
00:18:48.920 McKnight
00:18:49.440 Edmonton
00:18:50.500 Riverbend
00:18:51.540 Where
00:18:51.960 You know
00:18:53.000 Matt
00:18:53.280 Jenneru
00:18:53.740 Was announced
00:18:54.700 He's going
00:18:55.120 To be
00:18:55.620 Resigning
00:18:56.040 He won
00:18:56.540 By about
00:18:57.100 Five points
00:18:58.440 He got
00:18:59.640 Just over
00:19:00.060 50%
00:19:00.700 Of the
00:19:00.960 Vote
00:19:01.140 The
00:19:01.540 New
00:19:02.240 Democrat
00:19:02.620 Got about
00:19:03.080 45%
00:19:04.020 Of the
00:19:04.280 Vote
00:19:04.440 With a
00:19:04.740 Collapsed
00:19:05.380 NDP
00:19:06.180 Which
00:19:06.820 Is surprising
00:19:07.760 In Edmonton
00:19:08.660 If you
00:19:08.880 Know
00:19:09.020 Edmonton
00:19:09.660 So
00:19:10.580 You know
00:19:12.340 If Jenneru
00:19:13.040 Is gone
00:19:13.380 No incumbent
00:19:14.560 Could the
00:19:15.000 Liberals
00:19:15.280 Take that
00:19:15.780 Absolutely
00:19:16.340 Could they
00:19:17.460 Start looking
00:19:18.080 At picking
00:19:18.620 Up seats
00:19:19.140 In
00:19:19.540 Saskatchewan
00:19:20.820 Again
00:19:21.060 Places like
00:19:21.800 Regina
00:19:22.180 Which
00:19:22.600 Ralph Goody
00:19:23.160 All held
00:19:23.580 For years
00:19:24.100 But
00:19:24.360 They haven't
00:19:25.020 Held in a
00:19:25.420 Long time
00:19:25.920 Because the
00:19:26.460 Liberals
00:19:26.740 Were seen
00:19:27.080 As antagonistic
00:19:28.120 To all of
00:19:28.720 Western Canada
00:19:29.480 You take
00:19:30.540 You take
00:19:30.560 That down
00:19:31.100 A bit
00:19:31.440 Suddenly
00:19:31.940 Some
00:19:32.500 Riding
00:19:32.840 Start flipping
00:19:33.560 Red
00:19:33.880 I'm not
00:19:34.720 Saying they're
00:19:35.060 Going to
00:19:35.280 Dominate
00:19:35.740 They have
00:19:36.220 Not done
00:19:36.960 Very well
00:19:37.500 In Western
00:19:37.920 Canada
00:19:38.300 For decades
00:19:38.900 Tell me
00:19:39.560 About it
00:19:40.120 But yeah
00:19:42.900 They could
00:19:43.780 Change the
00:19:44.300 Math
00:19:44.560 And I
00:19:44.980 Think they
00:19:45.540 Could win
00:19:45.980 More seats
00:19:46.640 From this
00:19:47.500 Sort of
00:19:47.800 Thing
00:19:48.040 Be it
00:19:49.080 In
00:19:49.320 Alberta
00:19:49.920 Or
00:19:50.440 Saskatchewan
00:19:51.180 Or
00:19:52.080 They're
00:19:52.740 Probably
00:19:53.060 At their
00:19:53.380 Tops
00:19:53.680 In
00:19:53.820 Manitoba
00:19:54.260 Right
00:19:54.540 Now
00:19:54.760 But
00:19:54.940 They
00:19:55.060 Could
00:19:55.200 Pick up
00:19:55.700 Some
00:19:55.880 Seats
00:19:56.200 In
00:19:56.420 Ontario
00:19:57.360 If
00:19:57.800 People
00:19:58.080 Extra
00:19:59.000 Seats
00:19:59.300 In
00:19:59.440 Ontario
00:19:59.780 People
00:20:00.140 Are
00:20:00.300 Saying
00:20:00.560 Well
00:20:01.220 He's
00:20:01.380 Getting
00:20:01.580 Things
00:20:01.920 Done
00:20:02.220 So
00:20:02.940 What
00:20:03.160 Does
00:20:03.320 That
00:20:03.520 Do
00:20:03.860 To
00:20:04.080 Polly
00:20:04.380 Ev
00:20:04.700 Who's
00:20:05.220 Literally
00:20:05.680 Facing
00:20:06.340 A review
00:20:07.060 Of his
00:20:07.480 Leadership
00:20:07.920 In
00:20:08.540 Just a
00:20:08.900 Few
00:20:09.080 Weeks
00:20:09.380 Time
00:20:09.700 Does
00:20:10.460 It
00:20:10.720 Create
00:20:11.280 Peril
00:20:11.920 For
00:20:12.160 Him
00:20:12.420 Yeah
00:20:14.860 Including
00:20:15.860 With
00:20:16.340 The fact
00:20:16.640 That
00:20:16.800 Many
00:20:17.000 Of
00:20:17.160 The
00:20:17.280 UCP
00:20:17.820 Delegates
00:20:18.380 Who
00:20:18.540 Are
00:20:18.660 There
00:20:18.840 This
00:20:19.100 Weekend
00:20:19.540 And
00:20:20.020 Yeah
00:20:20.200 There's
00:20:20.440 Some
00:20:20.580 Booing
00:20:20.920 But
00:20:21.320 There's
00:20:21.500 Also
00:20:21.700 Going
00:20:21.880 To
00:20:21.900 Be
00:20:22.000 A
00:20:22.120 Lot
00:20:22.240 Of
00:20:22.320 Support
00:20:22.660 I
00:20:22.800 Believe
00:20:29.000 Polly
00:20:29.720 Delegates
00:20:30.360 And
00:20:30.940 So
00:20:31.280 If
00:20:31.680 He's
00:20:32.060 Arguing
00:20:32.660 Against
00:20:33.060 A
00:20:33.480 Greener
00:20:34.760 That's
00:20:35.000 Doing
00:20:35.220 Pretty
00:20:35.500 Well
00:20:35.720 Right
00:20:35.960 Now
00:20:36.240 Does
00:20:36.660 That
00:20:36.900 Hurt
00:20:37.140 Him
00:20:37.300 Potentially
00:20:38.120 There's
00:20:39.560 So
00:20:40.080 Many
00:20:40.340 Moving
00:20:40.680 Parts
00:20:41.240 Politically
00:20:41.820 With
00:20:42.020 This
00:20:42.200 That
00:20:43.520 Will
00:20:43.680 Depend
00:20:44.020 On
00:20:44.220 Where
00:20:44.420 It
00:20:44.580 Lands
00:20:44.980 And
00:20:45.640 So
00:20:46.480 This
00:20:46.680 Could
00:20:46.920 Not
00:20:47.700 Be
00:20:47.820 A
00:20:47.980 Fundamental
00:20:48.620 Reshaping
00:20:49.300 But
00:20:49.600 You
00:20:50.540 Know
00:20:50.740 How
00:20:51.560 Long
00:20:52.260 Has
00:20:52.860 It
00:20:53.000 Been
00:20:53.240 Since
00:20:53.720 Liberals
00:20:55.680 Were
00:20:55.820 Taken
00:20:56.140 Credibly
00:20:56.540 In
00:20:56.700 Western
00:20:57.000 Canada
00:20:57.460 Jean
00:20:58.020 Cretien
00:20:58.380 Wasn't
00:20:59.000 Hated
00:20:59.520 He
00:21:00.480 Got
00:21:00.640 Along
00:21:00.860 Great
00:21:01.060 With
00:21:01.240 Ralph
00:21:01.480 Klein
00:21:01.700 He
00:21:01.820 Wasn't
00:21:02.040 Seen
00:21:02.340 As
00:21:02.540 Antagonistic
00:21:04.000 In
00:21:04.240 The
00:21:04.400 Same
00:21:04.700 Way
00:21:05.140 Obviously
00:21:06.480 The
00:21:06.720 Gun
00:21:06.880 Registry
00:21:07.320 Was
00:21:07.540 A
00:21:07.660 Problem
00:21:07.920 For
00:21:08.260 Him
00:21:08.400 In
00:21:09.620 Certain
00:21:09.900 Parts
00:21:10.300 But
00:21:10.400 The
00:21:10.520 Liberals
00:21:10.800 Still
00:21:11.040 Won
00:21:11.300 Some
00:21:11.520 Seats
00:21:11.800 Out
00:21:12.000 There
00:21:12.220 And
00:21:13.060 Then
00:21:13.320 They

00:24:37.360 Can
00:24:37.920 I
00:24:39.880 Can
00:24:40.260 To
00:24:41.160 Know
00:24:42.220 No
00:24:42.240 Huge
00:24:42.740 Experten
00:24:43.240 I
00:24:43.420 Can
00:24:43.600 Tell
00:24:43.700 You
00:24:43.900 This
00:24:44.160 One
00:24:45.060 When
00:24:45.300 Those
00:24:45.580 Videos
00:24:45.960 Were
00:24:46.140 Going
00:24:46.340 Around
00:24:46.680 Of
00:24:46.840 The
00:24:46.920 Democrat
00:24:47.340 Politicians
00:24:48.040 Telling
00:24:48.460 Soldiers
00:24:48.860 To
00:24:49.040 Disobey
00:24:49.620 In
00:24:49.880 Illegal
00:24:50.780 Orders
00:24:51.220 I
00:24:51.840 Didn't
00:24:52.060 Like
00:24:52.300 Them
00:24:52.520 You're
00:24:53.200 A
00:24:53.320 Politician
00:24:53.900 Shut
00:24:54.420 Up
00:24:54.720 But
00:24:56.300 To
00:24:56.580 The
00:24:56.760 Other
00:24:56.920 Reason
00:24:57.160 I
00:24:57.300 Didn't
00:24:57.460 Like
00:24:57.700 Them
00:24:57.840 Is
00:24:57.980 In
00:24:58.080 The
00:24:58.160 Canadian
00:24:58.480 Armed
00:24:58.700 injust
00:24:58.740 And
00:24:59.260 British
00:24:59.540 Armed
00:24:59.760 Force
00:24:59.980 And
00:25:00.440 And I'm assuming in the American, one of the things you're taught in basic military training, in your GMT course, as we called it back in my day, is that you do not obey illegal orders.
00:25:13.020 And that goes back to Nuremberg.
00:25:15.380 And so you cannot, if you're told to do something by your commanding officer, by your NCO, go do this, and you know it's illegal, and you do it anyway, you can be charged.
00:25:26.820 So if that does exist, Hegseth could be in a world of trouble.
00:25:30.840 I have not seen or heard the audio yet, or seen it written out definitively attached to him.
00:25:39.200 If it exists, he's in a world of trouble, but so are the people that carried out the orders.
00:25:46.180 Which is an important point.
00:25:47.480 Yeah, he wasn't alone.
00:25:48.540 He didn't do it on his own.
00:25:49.700 There were people under him who would have carried out those, what looked to be illegal orders.
00:25:56.940 And there is a valid debate about whether what the United States is doing with these votes is legal or illegal.
00:26:06.680 But there would be very little debate about going back and killing people that survived a strike like that.
00:26:14.120 Well, what a time we live in, brother.
00:26:19.580 What a time we live in.
00:26:20.980 But at least there's a glimmer of hope on the Canadian political horizon this week coming out of Alberta, of all places, and Ottawa, of all places.
00:26:29.600 Something I never thought I'd see happen.
00:26:32.300 Nor are.
00:26:33.160 It's a good, it looks like a good thing.
00:26:35.500 So thank you much.
00:26:36.480 I will be in touch when I am in, on the other side of the pond and toasting you in a pub somewhere.
00:26:43.140 But in the meantime, have a great day and a great week.
00:26:45.440 I'm waking up to a chorus
00:26:48.640 Screaming every word
00:26:54.020 We're 30 years in
00:26:55.940 Voices are heard
00:26:59.840 We've grown up with family
00:27:03.040 With a healing song
00:27:07.700 I hope in my
00:27:10.520 And you're all still here
00:27:15.620 So much in life won't stay the same
00:27:20.280 But this right here will never change
00:27:24.280 We'll raise a glass to you and sing
00:27:27.600 Much love, much love
00:27:31.080 I'm looking out at the kitchen
00:27:41.560 In the scars of skin
00:27:47.480 When we fear us
00:27:49.960 Here's what we feel
00:27:52.480 Here's to what they say
00:27:57.420 But no one else is around
00:28:01.760 And no one else is around
00:28:02.080 I hope I'm not striving
00:28:03.740 To be here right now
00:28:07.900 So much in life won't stay the same
00:28:13.260 But this right here will never change
00:28:17.180 We'll raise a glass to you and sing
00:28:19.900 Much love, much love
00:28:21.900 And no one else is around
00:28:23.940 This is one thing
00:28:25.080 That we'll stay the same
00:28:27.560 That we'll stay the same
00:28:31.160 That we'll stay the same
00:28:32.520 That we'll stay the same
00:28:36.900 That we'll stay the same
00:28:38.100 That we'll stay the same
00:28:41.560 We're not alone
00:28:43.820 It's a marching line won't stay the same
00:28:56.980 But this right here will never change
00:29:00.760 Raise a glass to you and sing much love
00:29:05.980 It's a marching line won't stay the same
00:29:11.560 But this right here will never change
00:29:15.380 Raise a glass to you and sing much love
00:29:20.340 So much love won't stay the same
00:29:26.100 But this right here will never change
00:29:29.860 Raise a glass to you and sing much love
00:29:34.880 Much love, much love
00:29:41.560 And we're back, we're back with my friend Karim Asad
00:29:45.520 Who's got a dog in the room with her
00:29:47.800 I've moved my dogs out
00:29:49.720 But dogs are welcome on the Kinsella cast
00:29:52.080 And so we're delighted you're back this week
00:29:55.340 And I wanted to sing your praises
00:29:57.960 Or I wanted to give you an opportunity
00:29:59.180 To talk about a big win that you had in court this week
00:30:01.760 Tell us all about it
00:30:03.120 Thanks Warren
00:30:04.760 I was representing a gentleman
00:30:07.360 Most well known as tinfoil hat guy
00:30:10.980 In an assault charge in Ottawa
00:30:14.760 And he was acquitted
00:30:17.040 So good news up front
00:30:19.280 And the context of his acquittal
00:30:21.900 Was accepted on the grounds of self-defense
00:30:26.200 And defense of others
00:30:27.440 And what makes this case significant
00:30:30.780 Is the complainant
00:30:32.540 Who is Dina Sharif
00:30:36.660 She is a regular character
00:30:42.020 In my protest coverage
00:30:44.120 She's facing some pretty serious charges of her own
00:30:48.220 In relation to alleged protest activity
00:30:51.340 Including assault with weapon
00:30:53.640 Hate-motivated harassment
00:30:54.860 And, you know, what stood out about this case
00:30:59.460 Was really the Crown's insistence
00:31:02.240 Despite pretty clear video evidence
00:31:05.360 Of what was happening
00:31:07.400 And what led up to my client
00:31:10.660 Trying to remove Ms. Sharif
00:31:14.160 From a crowd of protesters
00:31:16.460 Who she was agitating
00:31:17.640 The Crown was insistent on proceeding the full way
00:31:21.820 And this is really a situation
00:31:23.640 Where the process is the punishment
00:31:26.400 I think it's been the case
00:31:29.140 For other individuals
00:31:32.300 And the judge had some pretty clear reasoning
00:31:37.240 It came down to credibility
00:31:40.400 And sort of the consistency
00:31:42.240 Of what witnesses testified to
00:31:44.900 And how that matched up with video evidence
00:31:48.040 And the bottom line is
00:31:50.300 We do have a right to self-defense
00:31:54.880 And the defense of others
00:31:56.560 In Canada, obviously
00:31:58.200 That needs to be assessed and considered
00:32:01.160 Within a very particular framework
00:32:04.300 The judge was clear that
00:32:05.840 Her reasoning applied to the facts of this case
00:32:09.800 And it wasn't a broad endorsement
00:32:12.420 On people self-deputizing
00:32:14.980 To police one another
00:32:16.500 But I think justice was served
00:32:19.180 Well, obviously he had an excellent lawyer
00:32:22.000 So congratulations to him
00:32:24.000 And congratulations to you
00:32:25.240 And you provided me with an excellent segue
00:32:27.380 To the thing that I wanted to speak about
00:32:30.580 With you as well
00:32:31.680 I spoke at Beth Shalom Synagogue this week
00:32:33.740 Along with a very brave young woman
00:32:36.220 Who was born in Israel
00:32:37.740 And was denied a Canadian passport
00:32:39.340 Because of that
00:32:40.060 Anyway, she prevailed in the end
00:32:41.580 In her legal challenge of that
00:32:44.560 But one of the things I got asked quite a bit
00:32:46.940 Made me immediately think of you
00:32:48.560 As I was on the stage at Beth Shalom
00:32:50.400 Which is how upset
00:32:52.500 And how wounded
00:32:54.020 So many of the Jews there were
00:32:56.260 About, you know, they're okay
00:32:58.340 With Israel being protested
00:33:00.520 And the government of Israel's decisions
00:33:02.400 Being protested
00:33:03.380 But protests in front of their synagogues
00:33:06.860 In front of their places of worship
00:33:08.160 When they're most vulnerable as people
00:33:11.260 You've covered
00:33:12.480 I mean, you're Canada's leading expert
00:33:14.460 On protest culture
00:33:16.480 You've covered a lot of those
00:33:18.240 What's your take on
00:33:19.240 You know, why that sort of thing is happening
00:33:21.820 And is it something
00:33:23.580 That people should be concerned about?
00:33:26.760 Sure
00:33:27.240 So I've documented
00:33:29.040 Several protests outside synagogues
00:33:33.320 A couple outside Gurdwara
00:33:35.600 And I think one Munder
00:33:37.440 So, you know, kind of a range
00:33:40.860 But really I would say
00:33:42.520 The majority of religious-related protests
00:33:46.820 Have been at synagogues
00:33:48.400 In fact, one of them involved
00:33:50.660 Ms. Sharif
00:33:51.740 Who we just talked about
00:33:52.720 In the last segment
00:33:53.680 Where she was wielding
00:33:56.260 An electronic whistle
00:33:57.420 Handed that whistle over to her child
00:34:00.760 And was blasting it in people's faces
00:34:04.060 Right in front of police
00:34:05.600 My take on this
00:34:07.940 Is that
00:34:08.820 And this is maybe
00:34:10.360 A little bit controversial
00:34:11.440 I don't think we need new laws
00:34:14.700 I'm aware that Bill C-9
00:34:18.260 Which is making its way
00:34:19.440 Through Parliament
00:34:22.180 Would introduce new provisions
00:34:25.800 Related specifically to
00:34:28.820 Protests or demonstrations
00:34:31.500 Outside places of worship
00:34:34.540 Anything intended to provoke fear
00:34:37.880 But from my observations
00:34:40.660 The unruly behaviour
00:34:43.040 That I've seen
00:34:44.260 Outside synagogues
00:34:46.800 Is already
00:34:47.940 We could address it
00:34:49.680 With the criminal code
00:34:51.380 As it exists
00:34:52.240 Now the rationale
00:34:54.480 That people have expressed
00:34:56.300 And we'll stick
00:34:57.880 Specifically to synagogues here
00:34:59.540 The rationale that I've heard
00:35:01.540 It generally relates
00:35:03.380 To programming
00:35:04.360 That's happening inside
00:35:06.120 And I think
00:35:07.340 In almost every instance
00:35:09.560 It's been
00:35:10.960 Related to real estate conferences
00:35:14.260 Selling land in Israel
00:35:16.820 In the West Bank
00:35:18.380 Yes
00:35:18.800 Yes
00:35:19.940 So that's the rationale
00:35:21.480 That's presented
00:35:22.380 And you know
00:35:24.280 That holds up
00:35:25.920 To some degree
00:35:27.200 But I think that
00:35:30.820 You know
00:35:31.660 At some point
00:35:32.500 Over
00:35:33.680 At least in my observation
00:35:35.140 The past few years
00:35:36.180 We've really
00:35:37.780 Really lowered our standards
00:35:40.640 In how Canadians
00:35:42.360 Treat one another
00:35:43.320 And so what would have been
00:35:45.720 Just unthinkable
00:35:46.740 Or unacceptable
00:35:47.780 Behaviour
00:35:48.680 Five years ago
00:35:50.180 Is now normalised
00:35:52.220 And that's a cultural issue
00:35:53.620 But it can be addressed
00:35:57.960 With our existing criminal code
00:36:00.780 There are provisions
00:36:02.140 For intimidation
00:36:03.320 For mischief
00:36:04.100 For assault
00:36:05.100 For
00:36:06.300 Unlawful assembly
00:36:07.440 Yeah
00:36:08.100 Exactly right
00:36:09.440 So I'm of the view
00:36:11.460 That it needs to be addressed
00:36:14.260 On a case-by-case basis
00:36:15.580 And police need to be
00:36:17.760 Maybe mindful
00:36:19.460 Of the specific
00:36:21.300 Vulnerabilities
00:36:22.080 That are at play
00:36:22.980 When people are going
00:36:24.020 Into a place of worship
00:36:25.160 And in fact
00:36:26.520 There is already
00:36:28.400 A provision as well
00:36:29.540 Relating to
00:36:31.740 Disturbing worship
00:36:33.000 So there is
00:36:35.800 Some thought
00:36:36.680 That's been given
00:36:37.260 To this
00:36:37.720 In the criminal code
00:36:38.600 But I think
00:36:40.420 That individual behaviour
00:36:42.400 Should be addressed
00:36:43.920 And kind of
00:36:45.240 The path of
00:36:46.100 Least resistance
00:36:46.980 Policing
00:36:47.560 Where there's
00:36:48.560 Acquiescence
00:36:49.300 To a large crowd
00:36:50.920 To kind of
00:36:51.740 Maintain the peace
00:36:52.620 That doesn't work
00:36:53.860 Bubble legislation
00:36:55.580 At least
00:36:57.120 Toronto's
00:36:58.140 Most recent
00:36:58.700 Iteration of it
00:36:59.760 I think
00:37:00.540 Is going to be
00:37:01.240 Largely ineffective
00:37:02.140 It's mostly
00:37:03.040 Window dressing
00:37:04.240 It makes people
00:37:04.780 Feel better
00:37:05.440 The actual
00:37:06.440 Practicalities
00:37:07.380 Of enforcing it
00:37:08.240 I don't really
00:37:10.860 See that
00:37:11.440 As a helpful tool
00:37:12.560 I think
00:37:13.660 The criminal code
00:37:14.640 Exists
00:37:15.460 And needs to be
00:37:16.520 Enforced
00:37:17.640 As needed
00:37:19.100 And not
00:37:20.700 Just let
00:37:21.520 Things
00:37:22.020 Slide
00:37:23.020 And that
00:37:24.620 Could
00:37:24.940 Be a
00:37:25.840 Solution
00:37:26.260 Here
00:37:26.640 I don't
00:37:27.240 Think we
00:37:27.620 Need new
00:37:27.960 Laws
00:37:28.300 One thing
00:37:29.080 I wanted
00:37:29.480 To ask
00:37:29.860 You
00:37:29.960 But I
00:37:30.180 Didn't
00:37:30.360 Give you
00:37:30.620 A heads
00:37:30.900 Up on
00:37:31.240 This one
00:37:31.640 But you
00:37:32.240 I know
00:37:32.660 You can
00:37:33.480 Handle it
00:37:33.940 Because you're
00:37:34.240 Bilingual
00:37:34.620 And you
00:37:35.200 Studied at
00:37:35.960 The border
00:37:36.400 Of Quebec
00:37:36.980 And as you
00:37:37.840 Know you've
00:37:38.300 Got a
00:37:38.560 Government
00:37:38.940 In the
00:37:39.260 Province
00:37:39.560 Of Quebec
00:37:39.900 The CAQ
00:37:40.800 It's in
00:37:41.400 It's dying
00:37:42.420 Days
00:37:42.860 They're in
00:37:43.220 Big trouble
00:37:43.860 Electorally
00:37:44.800 Politically
00:37:45.500 And they've
00:37:46.460 Announced
00:37:46.740 This week
00:37:47.140 That they
00:37:47.460 Want to
00:37:47.840 Shut down
00:37:48.680 Prayer rooms
00:37:49.700 In
00:37:50.740 Universities
00:37:51.620 And places
00:37:52.240 Like that
00:37:52.980 And this
00:37:55.200 Has caused
00:37:55.860 A lot of
00:37:57.240 Consternation
00:37:57.880 Not just
00:37:58.320 Among Muslims
00:37:59.400 But also
00:37:59.960 Among some
00:38:00.480 Jews
00:38:00.800 Who make
00:38:01.340 Use of
00:38:01.680 Those prayer
00:38:02.200 Spaces
00:38:02.760 What is
00:38:03.720 Because you
00:38:05.420 Made me
00:38:05.740 Think of
00:38:06.040 This
00:38:06.200 What's your
00:38:07.200 Take on
00:38:07.820 That move
00:38:08.380 Is that
00:38:08.700 The sort
00:38:09.040 Of thing
00:38:09.420 That is
00:38:10.300 Understandable
00:38:11.100 In these
00:38:12.080 Divided
00:38:12.700 Days
00:38:13.060 Or is it
00:38:13.720 Something
00:38:14.080 That is
00:38:15.000 Going too
00:38:15.440 Far in
00:38:15.840 Your
00:38:15.960 Opinion
00:38:16.360 I think
00:38:18.200 It's an
00:38:18.520 Example of
00:38:19.380 The pendulum
00:38:19.960 Swinging too
00:38:20.820 Far the
00:38:21.320 Other way
00:38:21.800 And you
00:38:23.680 Know some
00:38:24.100 Of the
00:38:24.600 Support
00:38:25.220 Behind this
00:38:26.680 Proposal
00:38:27.400 Comes from
00:38:28.480 People seeing
00:38:29.800 Or even
00:38:30.920 Experiencing
00:38:31.940 Situations
00:38:33.280 Where public
00:38:34.780 Prayer is
00:38:35.640 Blocking
00:38:36.140 Streets or
00:38:37.040 Impeding
00:38:37.740 People's
00:38:38.620 Movement
00:38:38.980 Or access
00:38:40.140 And then
00:38:41.300 That kind
00:38:42.340 Of turns
00:38:42.980 Into a
00:38:43.700 General
00:38:44.200 Distaste
00:38:45.180 For
00:38:45.820 Prayer
00:38:48.120 Public
00:38:51.280 Prayer
00:38:51.860 Rooms
00:38:52.480 Right
00:38:52.780 In
00:38:52.940 Universities
00:38:53.620 Or
00:38:53.980 Wherever
00:38:54.660 Are
00:38:55.780 Deliberately
00:38:56.560 Have
00:38:57.280 Their
00:38:57.700 Unobtrusive
00:38:59.280 By nature
00:39:00.000 And in
00:39:01.880 Theory
00:39:02.140 They already
00:39:02.740 Exist
00:39:03.860 So when
00:39:05.040 You're
00:39:05.280 Talking about
00:39:06.340 Taking
00:39:06.820 Something
00:39:07.780 Away
00:39:08.360 I think
00:39:09.440 There should
00:39:09.920 Be a
00:39:11.160 Good and
00:39:11.680 Strong and
00:39:12.740 Persuasive
00:39:13.300 Rationale
00:39:14.220 For that
00:39:14.780 To me
00:39:15.920 This
00:39:16.140 Be a
00:39:16.620 Little bit
00:39:17.120 Punitive
00:39:17.980 And counter
00:39:18.740 Productive
00:39:19.600 Even
00:39:19.920 Because
00:39:20.660 Whereas
00:39:21.640 People
00:39:22.020 Might
00:39:22.320 Have
00:39:22.660 Gone
00:39:23.260 And used
00:39:23.800 Those
00:39:24.220 Facilities
00:39:25.000 Now
00:39:26.660 They're
00:39:27.000 Left
00:39:27.260 In the
00:39:27.540 Position
00:39:27.980 Of
00:39:28.520 Are
00:39:29.040 Going
00:39:29.400 To
00:39:29.560 Go
00:39:29.700 Back
00:39:29.940 To
00:39:30.140 More
00:39:30.500 Kind
00:39:31.080 Of
00:39:31.180 Public
00:39:31.560 Praying
00:39:32.000 So
00:39:33.300 I
00:39:33.760 Don't
00:39:35.200 I
00:39:35.480 Don't
00:39:35.620 Really
00:39:35.920 Think
00:39:37.220 It
00:39:37.360 Makes
00:39:37.540 Sense
00:39:37.780 To
00:39:37.940 Take
00:39:38.160 Away
00:39:38.520 Existing
00:39:39.400 Facilities
00:39:40.000 If
00:39:40.940 We're
00:39:41.060 Talking
00:39:41.380 About
00:39:41.700 Should
00:39:42.000 They
00:39:42.380 Be
00:39:42.800 Incorporated
00:39:43.980 Into
00:39:44.200 New
00:39:44.480 Buildings
00:39:45.000 Maybe
00:39:45.320 That's
00:39:45.620 A
00:39:45.720 Different
00:39:45.960 Question
00:39:46.480 You
00:39:47.460 Know
00:39:47.660 Should
00:39:48.240 These
00:39:48.460 Rooms
00:39:48.720 Be
00:39:48.900 Repurposed
00:39:49.520 If
00:39:49.760 On
00:39:50.300 A
00:39:50.440 Case
00:39:50.660 By
00:39:50.820 Case
00:39:51.060 Basis
00:39:51.560 There
00:39:51.800 Was
00:39:52.100 You
00:39:52.540 Know
00:39:52.640 Maybe
00:39:53.120 It's
00:39:53.340 Not
00:39:53.520 Really
00:39:53.820 Used
00:39:54.340 And
00:39:54.560 There's
00:39:55.000 Need
00:39:55.200 For
00:39:55.380 Something
00:39:55.700 Else
00:39:56.080 That's
00:39:56.800 A
00:39:56.920 Policy
00:39:57.280 Decision
00:39:57.680 It's
00:39:57.880 Very
00:39:58.020 Different
00:39:58.460 Than
00:39:58.900 Banning
00:39:59.920 Them
00:40:00.460 So
00:40:01.760 That's
00:40:02.280 My
00:40:02.580 View
00:40:03.300 On
00:40:03.500 It
00:40:03.620 I
00:40:03.760 Think
00:40:04.020 It's
00:40:04.900 An
00:40:05.020 Over
00:40:05.360 Reaction
00:40:06.040 And
00:40:06.400 Not
00:40:06.780 Actually
00:40:07.180 Addressing
00:40:07.760 The
00:40:08.540 Problem
00:40:08.940 That
00:40:09.220 Is
00:40:09.620 Truly
00:40:11.040 On
00:40:11.300 People's
00:40:11.720 Mind
00:40:11.940 And
00:40:12.500 It's
00:40:12.660 Certainly
00:40:12.880 Symptomatic
00:40:13.600 Of
00:40:13.880 Government
00:40:14.500 In
00:40:17.660 I'd
00:40:18.160 Wanted
00:40:18.420 To
00:40:18.540 Talk
00:40:18.700 To
00:40:18.820 You
00:40:18.860 About
00:40:19.000 Social
00:40:19.280 Media
00:40:19.700 And
00:40:20.860 All
00:40:21.060 Of
00:40:21.200 This
00:40:21.380 Division
00:40:21.940 That
00:40:22.700 We're
00:40:22.840 Seeing
00:40:23.100 In
00:40:23.260 Society
00:40:23.660 That
00:40:23.920 You've
00:40:24.140 Documented
00:40:24.780 So
00:40:25.000 Well
00:40:25.280 In
00:40:25.440 Your
00:40:25.560 Work
00:40:25.860 But
00:40:26.100 Actually
00:40:26.680 I
00:40:26.800 Wanted
00:40:26.980 To
00:40:27.060 Put
00:40:27.180 That
00:40:27.360 Off
00:40:27.600 And
00:40:27.760 Talk
00:40:27.980 About
00:40:28.140 Another
00:40:28.500 Division
00:40:29.100 Because
00:40:30.320 I
00:40:30.520 Know
00:40:30.640 You
00:40:30.860 Pay
00:40:31.100 Close
00:40:31.480 Attention
00:40:31.960 To
00:40:32.580 The
00:40:33.940 Affairs
00:40:34.260 Of
00:40:34.480 Government
00:40:34.760 At
00:40:34.960 All
00:40:35.100 Levels
00:40:35.560 Brad
00:40:36.140 Brad
00:40:36.160 Bradford
00:40:36.580 Who
00:40:36.760 Full
00:40:36.980 Disclosure
00:40:37.480 Is
00:40:37.860 Somebody
00:40:38.220 If
00:40:38.960 He's
00:40:39.140 On
00:40:39.280 The
00:40:39.400 Ballot
00:40:39.740 To
00:40:39.900 Mayor
00:40:40.240 I'll
00:40:40.460 Be
00:40:40.700 Supporting
00:40:42.040 For
00:40:42.960 Mayor
00:40:43.560 Of
00:40:43.720 Toronto
00:40:44.060 In
00:40:44.660 The
00:40:44.800 Spring
00:40:45.040 Of
00:40:45.200 Next
00:40:45.440 Year
00:40:45.800 But
00:40:46.580 He
00:40:46.700 Gave
00:40:46.920 A
00:40:47.040 Big
00:40:47.240 Speech
00:40:47.600 This
00:40:47.840 Week
00:40:48.060 And
00:40:48.160 A
00:40:48.240 Big
00:40:48.380 Focus
00:40:48.960 Of
00:40:49.200 It
00:40:49.300 Was
00:40:49.480 Interesting
00:40:50.040 Was
00:40:50.320 Transit
00:40:50.900 And
00:40:51.640 Not
00:40:51.800 Just
00:40:51.980 Making
00:40:52.300 Transit
00:40:52.960 Go
00:40:53.480 Faster
00:40:53.980 And
00:40:54.360 Be
00:40:54.580 More
00:40:54.880 Dependable
00:40:55.560 But
00:40:56.180 Also
00:40:56.520 Making
00:40:57.260 It
00:40:57.500 Safer
00:40:58.080 And
00:40:59.460 How
00:41:00.080 And
00:41:00.560 The
00:41:00.760 Polling
00:41:01.240 Is
00:41:01.460 As
00:41:01.820 Subsequent
00:41:02.400 To
00:41:02.580 His
00:41:02.760 Speech
00:41:03.080 Shown
00:41:03.400 That
00:41:03.680 In
00:41:04.320 Big
00:41:04.620 Cities
00:41:04.920 Around
00:41:05.260 The
00:41:05.460 World
00:41:05.860 People
00:41:06.860 Are
00:41:07.080 Staying
00:41:07.400 Away
00:41:07.560 From
00:41:07.740 Transit
00:41:08.080 Because
00:41:08.320 They
00:41:08.460 Feel
00:41:08.720 Those
00:41:08.960 Places
00:41:09.440 Are
00:41:09.720 Unsafe
00:41:10.560 I
00:41:11.220 Wanted
00:41:11.420 To
00:41:11.460 Get
00:41:11.600 Your
00:41:11.760 Take
00:41:12.060 On
00:41:12.260 That
00:41:12.460 As
00:41:12.640 Somebody
00:41:12.940 Who
00:41:13.240 Watches
00:41:13.900 The
00:41:14.260 Movement
00:41:14.580 Of
00:41:14.780 People
00:41:15.120 And
00:41:15.500 This
00:41:16.060 Division
00:41:16.480 In
00:41:16.660 Society
00:41:17.080 What's
00:41:17.780 Your
00:41:17.900 View
00:41:18.260 About
00:41:18.700 What
00:41:19.000 Bradford
00:41:19.540 Said
00:41:19.920 And
00:41:20.140 Also
00:41:20.720 About
00:41:21.060 This
00:41:21.340 Issue
00:41:21.680 I
00:41:23.620 Think

00:41:27.420 That
00:41:27.720 Is

00:41:32.940 I
00:41:34.480 I'm
00:41:34.800 Reminded
00:41:35.380 That
00:41:35.780 Whether
00:41:36.300 This

00:41:45.500 The
00:41:46.740 Mixed
00:41:47.200 Reactions
00:41:47.780 To
00:41:48.060 That
00:41:48.400 With
00:41:48.800 Some
00:41:49.540 People
00:41:49.860 Expressing
00:41:50.580 Their

00:41:52.380 Concerns
00:41:53.260 And

00:42:04.040 And
00:42:04.720 You
00:42:05.600 Can't
00:42:05.980 Conflate
00:42:06.680 Being
00:42:07.520 Uncomfortable
00:42:08.400 With
00:42:08.800 Being
00:42:09.180 Unsafe
00:42:09.840 And
00:42:10.560 There's
00:42:11.000 You
00:42:11.380 Know
00:42:11.540 Maybe
00:42:13.360 A
00:42:13.620 Little
00:42:13.740 Bit
00:42:13.900 Of
00:42:14.040 Truth
00:42:14.400 To
00:42:15.000 Both
00:42:15.380 Sides
00:42:15.720 Of
00:42:15.900 That
00:42:16.180 My
00:42:17.940 Feeling
00:42:19.000 From
00:42:19.460 Sort
00:42:19.760 Of
00:42:19.860 The
00:42:20.100 Pulse
00:42:20.720 Of
00:42:21.000 The
00:42:21.160 City
00:42:21.400 Is
00:42:22.340 That
00:42:22.660 It
00:42:23.080 Is
00:42:23.600 Unsafe
00:42:24.180 At
00:42:24.880 Times
00:42:25.280 Do
00:42:25.760 You
00:42:25.820 Take
00:42:26.000 Transit
00:42:26.440 You
00:42:26.780 Transit
00:42:27.200 Person
00:42:27.520 I
00:42:28.380 Do
00:42:28.900 Although
00:42:30.080 It's
00:42:30.660 A
00:42:30.800 Little
00:42:30.920 Bit
00:42:31.100 Less
00:42:31.380 In
00:42:31.600 The
00:42:31.720 Winter
00:42:31.980 Because
00:42:32.380 They
00:42:32.820 Don't
00:42:33.420 Allow
00:42:33.640 My
00:42:33.840 Scooter
00:42:34.180 So
00:42:35.180 I'm
00:42:35.480 Not
00:42:37.760 As
00:42:38.180 Able
00:42:38.460 To
00:42:38.660 Access
00:42:38.960 The
00:42:39.260 Service
00:42:39.700 In
00:42:40.460 The
00:42:40.760 Winter
00:42:41.020 And
00:42:42.160 I
00:42:42.260 Just
00:42:42.480 Want
00:42:43.840 To
00:42:43.920 Tell
00:42:44.060 Everybody
00:42:44.320 Yes
00:42:44.780 She
00:42:45.160 Moves
00:42:45.820 Around
00:42:46.100 The
00:42:46.320 City
00:42:46.580 Folks
00:42:47.040 With
00:42:47.540 Great
00:42:47.880 Dexterity
00:42:48.680 And
00:42:48.900 Skill
00:42:49.420 On
00:42:50.160 Her
00:42:50.380 Scooter
00:42:50.880 Like
00:42:51.200 You
00:42:51.600 Never
00:42:51.820 See
00:42:52.040 She
00:42:52.660 Should
00:42:52.900 Enter
00:42:53.100 A
00:42:53.300 Race
00:42:53.580 Or
00:42:53.720 Something
00:42:54.040 She
00:42:54.240 Is
00:42:54.260 Really
00:42:54.440 Good
00:42:54.660 At
00:42:54.840 It
00:42:55.000 So
00:42:55.420 Go
00:42:56.000 Ahead
00:42:56.320 So
00:42:58.580 And
00:42:58.940 I've
00:42:59.160 Seen
00:42:59.600 You
00:42:59.940 Know
00:43:00.040 Everything
00:43:00.400 You
00:43:00.680 Can
00:43:00.860 Imagine
00:43:01.240 And
00:43:01.860 It's
00:43:02.120 Often
00:43:02.320 People
00:43:02.680 Who
00:43:03.240 Aren't
00:43:04.140 Even
00:43:04.320 Necessarily
00:43:05.000 Paying
00:43:05.660 To
00:43:05.900 Be
00:43:06.140 On
00:43:06.360 The
00:43:06.520 Subway
00:43:06.940 Or
00:43:08.040 Streetcar
00:43:09.020 Who
00:43:09.760 Are
00:43:10.140 Having
00:43:11.020 These
00:43:11.780 Episodes
00:43:12.500 And
00:43:13.820 So
00:43:14.440 It
00:43:15.440 Then
00:43:15.740 Deters
00:43:16.460 Everyone
00:43:17.460 From
00:43:17.940 Using
00:43:18.560 The
00:43:18.820 Service
00:43:19.140 And
00:43:20.220 There
00:43:20.360 Are
00:43:20.460 People
00:43:20.680 Who
00:43:20.900 Don't
00:43:21.160 Actually
00:43:21.560 Have
00:43:21.820 The
00:43:22.000 Luxury
00:43:22.500 Of
00:43:22.760 Choice
00:43:23.100 And
00:43:23.940 Must
00:43:24.540 Use
00:43:25.020 The
00:43:25.200 Service
00:43:25.660 Regardless
00:43:26.200 Of
00:43:27.000 The
00:43:28.220 Safety
00:43:28.800 And
00:43:28.960 That's
00:43:29.140 Not
00:43:29.300 Even
00:43:29.520 Touching
00:43:30.000 On
00:43:30.380 Delays
00:43:31.520 Or
00:43:32.180 Overcrowding
00:43:33.900 Or
00:43:34.220 Any
00:43:34.620 Of
00:43:34.820 That
00:43:35.040 So
00:43:36.000 There
00:43:37.120 Are
00:43:37.280 Aspects
00:43:37.760 Of
00:43:37.880 Our
00:43:38.180 Transit
00:43:38.560 That
00:43:38.900 Are
00:43:39.100 In
00:43:39.360 Pretty
00:43:39.720 Rough
00:43:39.980 Shape
00:43:40.300 And
00:43:41.480 You
00:43:41.900 Know
00:43:42.020 It's
00:43:42.580 I
00:43:43.360 Agree
00:43:43.580 With
00:43:43.740 The
00:43:43.860 View
00:43:44.020 That
00:43:44.180 It's
00:43:44.300 Not
00:43:44.480 Meant
00:43:44.700 To
00:43:44.880 Be
00:43:45.220 A
00:43:46.000 Mobile
00:43:46.500 Shelter
00:43:47.180 It's
00:43:47.920 Supposed
00:43:48.260 To
00:43:48.420 Be
00:43:48.700 Getting
00:43:49.360 People
00:43:49.700 From
00:43:49.920 Point
00:43:50.220 A
00:43:50.380 To
00:43:50.500 Point
00:43:50.740 B
00:43:51.040 Having
00:43:51.960 Said
00:43:52.360 That
00:43:52.740 The
00:43:53.460 Reality
00:43:53.880 Is
00:43:54.440 That
00:43:55.240 People
00:43:56.360 There
00:43:56.980 Are
00:43:57.060 People
00:43:57.260 In
00:43:57.420 Precarious
00:43:58.000 Spots
00:43:58.420 Who
00:43:59.880 Simply
00:44:00.760 There
00:44:00.980 Aren't
00:44:01.260 Enough
00:44:01.580 Services
00:44:02.120 Available
00:44:03.420 To
00:44:04.440 Meet
00:44:04.960 Their
00:44:05.180 Needs
00:44:05.620 And
00:44:06.000 They
00:44:07.040 Then
00:44:07.320 Take
00:44:07.680 What's
00:44:08.020 A
00:44:08.120 Rational
00:44:08.540 Decision
00:44:09.620 Of
00:44:10.200 Parking
00:44:11.720 Themselves
00:44:12.320 On
00:44:13.000 The
00:44:13.420 Train
00:44:13.660 So
00:44:14.940 I
00:44:15.960 Don't
00:44:16.120 Know
00:44:16.280 That
00:44:16.420 I
00:44:16.520 Have
00:44:16.660 A
00:44:16.780 Solution
00:44:17.140 To
00:44:17.480 It
00:44:17.680 It
00:44:18.840 Is
00:44:19.180 A
00:44:19.320 Real
00:44:19.620 Issue
00:44:20.680 And
00:44:21.560 There's
00:44:21.900 A
00:44:22.000 Lot
00:44:22.120 Of
00:44:22.240 Virtue
00:44:22.560 Signaling
00:44:23.400 That
00:44:23.580 Happens
00:44:23.900 Around
00:44:24.160 This
00:44:24.440 As
00:44:24.660 Well
00:44:24.860 That
00:44:26.060 I
00:44:26.520 Think
00:44:26.740 Is
00:44:26.900 Just
00:44:27.140 Disingenuous
00:44:28.420 From
00:44:29.020 Anyone
00:44:29.280 Who
00:44:29.480 Actually
00:44:29.880 Needs
00:44:30.280 To
00:44:30.600 Use
00:44:31.640 Transit
00:44:32.240 Right
00:44:33.520 Whether
00:44:33.740 It's
00:44:34.380 Smells
00:44:34.740 Or
00:44:35.000 Sounds
00:44:35.460 Or
00:44:35.680 Sights
00:44:36.040 Or
00:44:36.240 Open
00:44:36.520 Drug
00:44:36.800 Use
00:44:37.140 Those
00:44:38.040 Aren't
00:44:38.300 Things
00:44:38.640 That
00:44:38.960 People
00:44:39.420 Should
00:44:39.800 Be
00:44:40.100 Exposed
00:44:40.540 To
00:44:40.860 Trying
00:44:41.400 To
00:44:41.500 Get
00:44:41.720 From
00:44:41.920 Point
00:44:42.160 A
00:44:42.260 To
00:44:42.360 B
00:44:42.780 In
00:44:43.200 The
00:44:43.280 City
00:44:43.560 So
00:44:45.040 Yeah
00:44:45.260 It
00:44:45.560 Is
00:44:45.840 Something
00:44:46.220 That
00:44:46.420 Has
00:44:46.600 To
00:44:46.720 Be
00:44:46.860 Addressed
00:44:47.220 I
00:44:47.520 Don't
00:44:47.700 Have
00:44:48.000 A
00:44:48.820 Solution
00:44:49.240 But
00:44:49.720 It
00:44:50.280 Is
00:44:50.400 A
00:44:50.520 Real
00:44:50.640 Problem
00:44:50.980 Well
00:44:51.620 It's
00:44:52.160 Your
00:44:54.860 Considered
00:44:55.200 And
00:44:55.320 Important
00:44:55.800 So
00:44:56.400 Next
00:44:56.720 Week
00:44:57.020 I'm
00:44:57.300 Going
00:44:57.540 To
00:44:57.720 Be
00:44:57.880 I'm
00:44:58.100 Leaving
00:44:58.380 For
00:44:58.760 Marial
00:44:59.220 England
00:44:59.600 Tomorrow
00:45:00.160 And
00:45:01.160 Which
00:45:01.420 Has
00:45:01.580 Been
00:45:01.720 A
00:45:01.900 Center
00:45:02.200 Of
00:45:02.440 Protest
00:45:02.920 Globally
00:45:03.520 In
00:45:04.060 The
00:45:04.200 Past
00:45:04.580 Couple
00:45:05.240 Years
00:45:05.700 So
00:45:06.480 I
00:45:06.900 Intend
00:45:07.380 To
00:45:07.780 If
00:45:08.020 There's
00:45:08.240 Any
00:45:08.420 Going
00:45:08.640 On
00:45:08.920 I'm
00:45:09.040 Going
00:45:09.120 To
00:45:09.200 And
00:45:09.820 And
00:45:09.840 Watch
00:45:10.740 Them
00:45:11.000 And
00:45:11.140 Document
00:45:11.480 Them
00:45:11.660 And
00:45:11.760 I'm
00:45:11.880 Going
00:45:11.900 To
00:45:11.980 Send
00:45:12.220 That
00:45:12.440 To
00:45:12.760 You
00:45:13.040 How
00:45:13.540 About
00:45:13.740 That
00:45:14.040 So
00:45:14.240 We
00:45:14.420 Get
00:45:14.560 Some
00:45:14.740 International
00:45:15.260 Coverage
00:45:15.880 With
00:45:16.600 The

00:47:01.580 I'm Alex Pearson in for him,
00:47:03.960 and we're chatting with Warren Kinsella, Chris Chapin,
00:47:06.220 about all the big kind of stories,
00:47:07.460 and a lot of them the same kind of theme, economic-wise.
00:47:11.300 And the Shopify CEO, and Shopify is one of the Canadian success stories,
00:47:17.660 they've just had to lay off 140 of their staff,
00:47:21.260 blasting the federal government.
00:47:23.140 A couple of days ago, Melanie Jolie,
00:47:25.560 who I would love to see off to France,
00:47:27.960 was going on and on, boasting about Canada being a leading global tech player.
00:47:34.720 And the Shopify CEO pointing out,
00:47:36.740 no, no, that's not the case, in fact.
00:47:38.480 You know, and she was referencing this company, Nokia,
00:47:40.920 saying, look, when companies come here to Canada,
00:47:43.460 they're not coming here because it's fantastic to do business with.
00:47:46.220 They're coming here because we throw money at them in corporate welfare.
00:47:49.740 And Chris, it's true.
00:47:51.300 We only are able, you know, seemingly to attract talent,
00:47:54.760 you know, in companies here if we actually pay them.
00:47:57.500 So in other words, we're paying to create jobs,
00:47:59.600 and we're literally underselling ourselves.
00:48:02.520 And so to his point, we can't compete.
00:48:04.620 We literally are destroying ourselves,
00:48:07.720 but this is now how business is done in this country.
00:48:11.700 Yeah, I think there's some truth to that, Alex.
00:48:15.400 I think there's also the realities that, you know,
00:48:19.140 we are one country amongst many competing to attract investment
00:48:23.920 and attract businesses here,
00:48:26.260 competing against, you know,
00:48:28.740 our competing nations in the G7 and the G20.
00:48:31.480 And so there's an argument to be made,
00:48:35.220 the corporate welfare side about us, you know,
00:48:37.260 giving these companies money to locate here.
00:48:39.980 The question then becomes, you know,
00:48:42.280 what does that mean for our long-term economics,
00:48:44.940 the long-term success of our economy?
00:48:46.960 And does having these companies locate in Canada,
00:48:51.060 in one of our provinces, hiring, you know,
00:48:53.500 maybe they hire foreign workers
00:48:55.180 and bring over foreign talent to begin,
00:48:56.820 but do they train and do they upskill our workforce?
00:48:59.020 And so, you know, I think there's two sides
00:49:01.720 to the corporate welfare coin
00:49:03.840 and that argument around subsidizing jobs.
00:49:07.540 It's a tricky one because I think there's, you know,
00:49:10.640 I think it's often a pipe dream to imagine
00:49:12.900 that we just create these businesses on our own.
00:49:15.200 You know, it takes, you know,
00:49:16.540 innovative talent to start companies.
00:49:18.400 I think Shopify is an incredible success story.
00:49:20.700 That said, bringing other companies,
00:49:23.240 global companies to start a footprint here in Canada
00:49:26.260 is never a bad thing.
00:49:28.340 Yeah, but again, Warren,
00:49:29.720 it just is very difficult to attract investment here.
00:49:33.360 And look, we just got GDP numbers today
00:49:35.820 and, you know, yeah,
00:49:37.000 they blasted quote-unquote past expectations,
00:49:40.020 but the expectations weren't that great.
00:49:42.500 And frankly, it tells us just a snapshot in time
00:49:45.720 because, you know,
00:49:46.720 while September gave us a bit of a bounce back,
00:49:49.520 October's data doesn't look great.
00:49:51.480 It looks like companies are kind of just shoring up
00:49:54.240 and trying to get ahead of tariff hits, right?
00:49:56.840 So we're in a really volatile time.
00:49:59.460 And while technically we're not in a recession,
00:50:02.740 most people feel like we're in recession.
00:50:09.360 Warren there?
00:50:10.320 Hey, Warren.
00:50:11.460 Sorry, we're not just in a volatile time.
00:50:13.640 We're in a vulnerable time.
00:50:15.320 Yeah.
00:50:15.600 You know, the data is that we're not going to see,
00:50:18.300 like we've got growth of, you know,
00:50:19.880 0.1, 0.2%, way less than we'd all hoped it to be.
00:50:24.680 And that's not going to meaningfully change
00:50:26.680 until they're thinking this, you know,
00:50:28.500 the second quarter, third quarter of 2016.
00:50:32.220 So we've got a long way to go.
00:50:34.000 And obviously, Mr. Trump's tariffs have not helped.
00:50:36.660 But I think we're making a big mistake,
00:50:38.420 the three of us.
00:50:39.320 And that's taking seriously anything
00:50:41.820 that Melanie Jolie has to say.
00:50:43.740 I think we could start a new program
00:50:46.520 called Dumb Things That Melanie Jolie Had Said Today.
00:50:50.240 And like, it would have really good ratings.
00:50:52.000 Because you look at her response,
00:50:53.760 it's not just this one, on Stellantis,
00:50:55.880 which is another case of corporate welfare.
00:50:58.480 Stellantis, she's now, she took a strong position on it.
00:51:01.380 They can't do what they're doing.
00:51:02.620 They can't move Jeep production
00:51:03.980 from Brampton to Illinois.
00:51:06.020 Now she's saying, well, actually,
00:51:07.520 I didn't read the contract.
00:51:09.420 Like, you just can't make this stuff up.
00:51:11.560 So that's my advice to everybody.
00:51:13.040 Don't take seriously what Melanie Jolie has to say.
00:51:16.220 Yeah, but sadly, she is the Labour Minister.
00:51:17.780 And sadly, it's an important job,
00:51:19.220 especially when we're in a situation as we are.
00:51:23.020 But, you know, what would you be doing
00:51:25.160 if you were, let's say, the carny government?
00:51:28.320 You know, Chris, and I know you're not.
00:51:30.060 I mean, the bottom line is,
00:51:31.440 there's the immediate struggle now
00:51:33.340 for everyday Canadians who are falling further
00:51:35.600 and further and further behind.
00:51:37.520 And yet, you know, we seem to get more and more expensive.
00:51:40.560 I was just kind of looking at some of the numbers
00:51:42.860 as to, you know, from 2015 to 2024,
00:51:46.400 our economic growth,
00:51:47.440 when we look at all our comparable,
00:51:49.240 you know, economies, the OECD countries,
00:51:53.480 our growth is just 1.4%,
00:51:55.320 where you look at the United States, 18.2%.
00:51:58.400 And again, we've got companies
00:52:00.740 heading to the United States
00:52:02.120 because they don't pay higher taxes
00:52:03.840 and they don't deal with as many regulations.
00:52:06.200 But, you know, everyday people
00:52:07.820 can't just pick up and leave.
00:52:08.960 They're stuck here in a very expensive taxed country
00:52:12.340 where things like food are going up.
00:52:15.180 I want to play you some audio
00:52:16.140 of someone who lives in the United States
00:52:17.820 and came home to visit his parents
00:52:19.400 and just shocked by how expensive
00:52:21.640 life for everyday people has gotten.
00:52:23.700 Take a listen.
00:52:24.120 What the hell is going on in Canada right now?
00:52:26.760 I am home visiting my parents
00:52:28.020 this weekend for the holidays.
00:52:29.480 I live in the West Village in New York City,
00:52:32.380 the highest cost of living yuppie area
00:52:35.120 ever in the history of the United States.
00:52:37.300 I am never shocked when I get a dinner bill.
00:52:39.720 I'm never shocked when I go on vacation.
00:52:42.000 Nothing phases me.
00:52:42.780 I've traveled all over the world.
00:52:44.260 Tell me why I come home to Newmarket, Ontario,
00:52:47.560 the suburbs of Toronto,
00:52:49.220 and I'm shocked at the cost of living here.
00:52:52.140 How are Canadian people making it work?
00:52:56.280 Everybody involved with the economy right now
00:52:58.720 needs to be fired immediately.
00:53:00.200 We need to contact the UN
00:53:01.500 and get a binding resolution here.
00:53:03.780 Something sinister is going on in Canada,
00:53:07.080 and I'm determined to get to the bottom of it.
00:53:09.080 I don't know if you can get to the bottom of it
00:53:10.680 other than we're just taxed too high,
00:53:12.200 but this is an issue.
00:53:13.900 We're talking pipelines and that,
00:53:15.240 but the solutions, Chris,
00:53:17.480 are not going to come overnight
00:53:18.420 for everyday Canadians
00:53:19.480 who just can't afford stuff.
00:53:21.120 No, they're not.
00:53:22.400 I'm curious what this guy does
00:53:23.880 to travel all over the world,
00:53:25.620 live in the United States,
00:53:27.040 and think that a UN binding resolution
00:53:29.600 is going to be fixed on it.
00:53:29.800 I think he was saying, yeah.
00:53:31.540 But notwithstanding that,
00:53:33.560 no, listen,
00:53:34.280 Canada's become an extremely expensive place
00:53:37.040 to live,
00:53:38.680 and I think every Canadian knows that
00:53:41.160 and feels that.
00:53:42.560 You can't go out for a meal these days
00:53:44.740 or go to the grocery store
00:53:46.040 without seeing something that,
00:53:47.480 you know,
00:53:47.900 my wife joked to me the other day,
00:53:49.500 she's like, you know,
00:53:50.020 we're going to become our parents pretty soon
00:53:51.940 where we talk about the price
00:53:52.960 of a bottle of Coke was five cents,
00:53:55.220 you know,
00:53:55.540 but it's happening,
00:53:57.040 you know,
00:53:57.260 the jump in prices for everyday goods,
00:54:00.180 it's like they've doubled
00:54:01.380 since five years ago in this country.
00:54:03.060 You know,
00:54:03.260 it's not like something you talked about
00:54:04.660 20, 30 years ago.
00:54:05.680 It's the price of everything's gone up,
00:54:07.280 and it is a real challenge,
00:54:08.620 and Alex,
00:54:09.680 you know,
00:54:10.060 the pipeline's not going to be built overnight,
00:54:11.620 but it's a good start.
00:54:13.880 For far too long,
00:54:14.960 I believe this country's relied on
00:54:16.560 public sector jobs
00:54:17.820 and the government
00:54:18.580 to get us through things,
00:54:19.640 and we've seen our economy,
00:54:21.660 you know,
00:54:22.240 stagnate,
00:54:22.900 and we do need economic growth,
00:54:24.520 and so I'm encouraged by a pipeline,
00:54:26.180 I'm encouraged by some of these
00:54:27.760 nation-building projects.
00:54:30.000 The only thing is,
00:54:31.220 they need to,
00:54:31.720 you know,
00:54:31.940 they needed to start yesterday,
00:54:33.280 and we need to stop talking about them
00:54:35.660 as, you know,
00:54:36.260 the future,
00:54:36.960 like,
00:54:37.100 they need to be today.
00:54:38.680 Yeah,
00:54:39.060 but they're not,
00:54:39.580 and I'll give you the last word,
00:54:41.260 you know,
00:54:41.600 Warren,
00:54:41.880 the bottom line is,
00:54:42.660 people need relief,
00:54:43.480 and I don't know then
00:54:44.720 what happens at the provincial level,
00:54:46.540 the federal level,
00:54:47.120 but this is something
00:54:47.760 Carney's going to have to get around,
00:54:49.100 because,
00:54:49.580 you know,
00:54:50.380 it's not going to correct
00:54:51.660 anytime soon,
00:54:52.680 so 2026,
00:54:54.240 what does that look like for Carney?
00:54:56.680 Well,
00:54:57.100 the,
00:54:57.320 just listening to the clip,
00:54:58.680 it's just like,
00:54:59.260 we're getting a lecture from a guy
00:55:01.180 who's spending $7,000 a month
00:55:02.880 to live in a broom closet in Brooklyn,
00:55:04.680 but anyway,
00:55:05.720 no,
00:55:06.460 it's bad everywhere.
00:55:07.480 I mean,
00:55:07.660 the most powerful force
00:55:08.840 in democratic politics
00:55:10.620 around the world now
00:55:11.500 is affordability.
00:55:12.500 There's no other issue
00:55:13.440 that comes even close,
00:55:15.220 and some politicians
00:55:16.500 know how to take advantage of that,
00:55:18.980 as Trump did,
00:55:19.840 as Carney did,
00:55:21.040 and then some politicians
00:55:22.320 end up being ended by it,
00:55:24.160 like Justin Trudeau was.
00:55:25.880 So,
00:55:26.420 you know,
00:55:27.740 can government solve
00:55:29.140 all of this problem?
00:55:30.720 I don't believe it can.
00:55:32.320 I mean,
00:55:32.640 I think if Trump and Carney
00:55:34.180 had some ability,
00:55:36.400 some magic wand
00:55:37.100 that they could waive
00:55:38.180 to fix affordability,
00:55:39.780 they would.
00:55:40.820 But,
00:55:41.120 you know,
00:55:41.320 there's a multiplicity
00:55:42.300 of factors involved here,
00:55:44.000 and unfortunately,
00:55:46.040 I think this is going to be
00:55:46.920 a fact of life for us
00:55:48.100 for,
00:55:48.940 from some considerable
00:55:50.400 period of time.
00:55:51.360 I mean,
00:55:51.520 that's what the economists
00:55:52.440 are saying,
00:55:53.200 is buckle your seatbelts.
00:55:55.060 Things are going to get
00:55:55.940 even worse in 2026,
00:55:57.620 and so I hate to be,
00:55:58.600 I hate to be Scrooge,
00:55:59.680 but that's what they're saying.
00:56:00.660 I'm a lean statue,
00:56:25.060 you'll see the truth.
00:56:36.040 I'm built up like a brick,
00:56:48.140 brick,
00:56:49.220 I'm built up like a brick,
00:56:51.220 brick,
00:56:52.300 brick,
00:56:52.820 and brick.
00:56:53.200 Head high to the sky
00:56:55.360 looking at the moon,
00:56:59.660 !
00:57:02.520 Ah
00:57:06.520 Oh
00:57:13.520 Ah
00:57:17.520 Ah
00:57:21.520 Ah
00:57:25.520 Ah
00:57:32.520 Ah
00:57:36.520 My eyes open wide
00:57:39.520 Enough to slip through
00:57:42.520 But they shame you
00:57:46.520 And then they do it too
00:57:50.520 Always someone in line
00:57:54.520 So I know you
00:57:58.520 My eyes right to the sky
00:58:02.520 I'll be quiet
00:58:08.520 Ah
00:58:12.520 Ah
00:58:16.520 Ah
00:58:20.520 Ah
00:58:22.520 Ah
00:58:28.520 Ah
00:58:32.520 Ah
00:58:38.520 Ah
00:58:40.520 Ah
00:58:42.520 Ah
00:58:44.520 Ah
00:58:46.520 Ah
00:58:48.520 Ah
00:58:50.520 Ah
00:58:52.520 Ah
00:58:54.520 Ah
00:58:56.520 Ah
00:58:58.520 Ah
00:59:00.520 Ah
00:59:02.520 Ah
00:59:04.520 Ah
00:59:10.520 Ah
00:59:12.520 Ah
00:59:14.520 Ah
00:59:16.520 Ah
00:59:18.520 Ah
00:59:20.520 Ah
00:59:22.520 Ah
00:59:26.520 Ah
00:59:28.520 Ah
00:59:30.520 Ah
00:59:32.520 Ah
00:59:34.520 Ah
00:59:36.520 Ah
00:59:38.520 Ah
00:59:40.520 Ah
00:59:44.520 Ah
00:59:46.520 Ah
00:59:48.520 Ah
00:59:50.520 Ah
00:59:52.520 Ah
00:59:54.520 Ah
00:59:56.520 Ah
00:59:58.520 Ah
01:00:00.520 Ah
01:00:02.520 Ah
01:00:06.520 Ah
01:00:08.520 Ah
01:00:10.520 Ah
01:00:12.520 Ah
01:00:14.520 Ah
01:00:16.520 Ah
01:00:18.520 Ah
01:00:20.520 Ah
01:00:22.520 for example, are actually located. So there's a news organization, for example, called Times of
01:00:28.440 Gaza. It's got a million followers. Journalists in the West have been repeating their stuff
01:00:33.580 and regurgitating their stuff for months now. And its location is claimed to be Palestine.
01:00:40.640 It's not. They're actually based in East Asia. And they connected to Twitter using the North
