Summary

In this episode, I answer a question sent in by a 24 year old who is thinking about joining the military. I discuss the pros and cons of serving in the military, why it's a thankless, thankless profession, and the benefits of joining.

Transcript

00:00:00.000 Thank you.
00:00:30.600 So you're thinking about joining the military.
00:00:34.080 This is a requested video from Patrick from down in Aussie land,
00:00:38.560 who is 24 years old and thinking about joining the military.
00:00:43.560 And in this video, obviously, I'm going to respond specifically to his question,
00:00:48.400 but hopefully I can give some valuable insight to any of you other young guys out there
00:00:53.260 that are thinking about joining the military yourself.
00:00:57.420 So he writes,
00:00:58.380 I'm 24 years old from Australia.
00:01:02.100 I majored in a worthless liberal arts degree, international studies,
00:01:06.760 which I have dropped out of and am currently working as a pizza delivery driver.
00:01:11.500 Now, you are absolutely correct.
00:01:14.700 The international studies, pretty much useless.
00:01:20.900 Unless, basically, you can become a politician with that, or you can work for an NGO.
00:01:28.260 And what are NGOs?
00:01:30.520 NGOs are, you know, Stefan Molyneux had a great video just recently about this,
00:01:35.980 where, you know, everything people criticize colonialism for,
00:01:39.920 which was, at least in the British case, was actually pretty awesome,
00:01:42.540 because it was based upon free market economics.
00:01:45.860 Everything they accused that, colonialism of being, is what NGOs are.
00:01:51.760 NGOs are charitable, white gill, let's manipulate the system,
00:01:57.780 let's play puppet masters with people's lives, with no accountability.
00:02:02.480 You know, even when the East India Company screwed things up,
00:02:06.600 they were still building roads and telegraphs and benefiting both the people of Britain and the people of India.
00:02:14.500 Not so with NGOs.
00:02:17.100 As a politician, you could make a difference.
00:02:20.660 My good friend, Danny DiGraccia, for instance, is a political scientist.
00:02:27.060 But it's very thankless, being an honest politician.
00:02:31.600 Okay?
00:02:32.040 Unless you're a scam artist, that's a very...
00:02:36.040 You either need to be a scam artist, or really, really committed to making a positive change in the world.
00:02:42.600 And if you're the latter, it's going to be a thankless, thankless profession.
00:02:47.600 So, good for you for dropping out of it, because you're just going more into debt.
00:02:54.060 You know?
00:02:54.780 Although you should probably look into if you...
00:02:58.520 Check if you've got any prerequisites that can later on be useful.
00:03:02.940 Okay?
00:03:03.780 Look into what the prerequisites are, look at what you've done,
00:03:07.260 and see if you can flip that into doing something else in the future,
00:03:13.260 assuming that you got good marks.
00:03:14.940 And honestly, even if you're taking a worthless degree, get good marks.
00:03:21.920 Okay?
00:03:22.380 Like, you should probably quit as soon as you figure out it's a worthless degree.
00:03:26.780 But as long as you're stuck paying for it, get good marks.
00:03:32.080 So, currently working as a pizza delivery driver.
00:03:36.620 And, dude, you're 24.
00:03:38.820 Now, I'm 34, and Aaron Clary tells me that nobody respects you until you're 35.
00:03:46.180 I'm inclined to believe him.
00:03:48.200 There is very, very little opportunity out there.
00:03:52.600 Pizza delivery driver, there's nothing to be ashamed of, nothing wrong with that.
00:03:56.780 That's, hey, at least they leave you alone while you're driving around in your car, right?
00:04:01.780 I'm strongly considering joining the military, or the army, which is what everyone calls it in Australia.
00:04:10.960 I was going to do army reserves for a year first, and if I can handle it and like it, upgrade to the full-time army.
00:04:20.060 And I'll get back to that in a sec.
00:04:21.520 My questions are these.
00:04:22.500 After you retired from the military, was finding employment difficult?
00:04:29.620 Are you better off getting an army job, which has some sort of trade skills attached to it?
00:04:34.180 I'm tossing up between being a combat engineer, a light cavalry scout, or just straight-up rifleman.
00:04:41.580 If it makes no difference, then I'd probably go for the light cavalry scout.
00:04:46.340 I'm a bit of a thrill seeker, but the combat engineer sounds like it has more transferable skills.
00:04:52.500 All right, so let's, there's more to the email, but let's deal with this.
00:05:00.820 And there's a follow-up email where he added a couple of details, so I'm going to kind of be including those in here.
00:05:08.920 First of all, do not go reserves, go reg force, go full-time, okay?
00:05:14.440 One of my greatest regrets in life is that, see, I went reserve force when I was in university.
00:05:21.360 And then, when I realized that university was a bunch of, uh, of, um, bull patootie,
00:05:29.680 I was about to go reg force when my mother spent an hour begging me not to.
00:05:37.460 And that is one of my biggest regrets in life, is not going reg force.
00:05:42.040 Uh, for one thing, I would have made a lot more money than I actually did.
00:05:48.080 Even using my army hookups to get me jobs, and even then, using my hookups to get jobs was not very good.
00:05:56.820 And that was, uh, that must be almost a decade ago, okay?
00:06:02.400 And, and with, like, military experience and everything.
00:06:06.680 So, I really, really regret not going reg force.
00:06:11.320 And I think you will too.
00:06:14.920 Reserves are what you do if you have a primary thing you're doing already.
00:06:19.600 If you're going to, if you're going to school.
00:06:23.420 If you are, if you have a career.
00:06:26.980 Like, say, you're a welder or something like that.
00:06:29.960 Like, let's say, let's say you're a welder.
00:06:31.820 You're making really good money welding.
00:06:33.600 And, and you get to the age of 24.
00:06:35.180 And you realize, you know, I always wanted to join the military.
00:06:37.900 Well, I could join the reserve force.
00:06:40.920 You know?
00:06:41.480 And I'm, I'm doing it part-time.
00:06:43.400 And then, maybe I volunteer for a rotation overseas.
00:06:46.640 And I take six months off of work.
00:06:49.280 And, at that point, if you're a good worker, your work will usually let you do that.
00:06:52.800 Because it's the military.
00:06:53.740 And, you know, um, even in Canada and Australia, most businesses are that patriotic.
00:07:01.040 That's what you do the reserve force for.
00:07:04.120 If you want to be in the military, though, and it sounds to me like you do, go full-time.
00:07:10.640 Full-time is intimidating because it's a three- to five-year commitment.
00:07:19.520 Now, that said, tiny little secret, it's not.
00:07:25.980 Not if it's really wrong for you.
00:07:28.060 And you will know within the first week whether or not it's wrong for you.
00:07:31.160 But it's not wrong for you.
00:07:35.360 If you're thinking about it, if it's, it's something that you want to do,
00:07:39.060 you want to acquire those skills.
00:07:41.680 You want to actually, like, not, not to insult amateurs.
00:07:51.760 Not, not to, hobbyists.
00:07:54.480 And, and you know what, I'm sure there's many hobbyists that are a better shot than I am.
00:07:59.600 With rifle, pistol, what have you.
00:08:04.200 But they don't fully understand its implementation.
00:08:09.060 If you want to understand combat, like, listen, like, anybody can, listen, mixed martial arts guys,
00:08:16.380 pretty much all of them could kick my ass.
00:08:20.040 You know, half the women in it could probably kick my ass.
00:08:23.660 That's not violence.
00:08:25.520 That's not warfare.
00:08:26.980 That's a sport.
00:08:28.020 You clearly want to understand combat.
00:08:34.680 And you will learn that in the military.
00:08:40.180 You will actually learn combat.
00:08:41.700 Because real combat is, is nothing like, you know, the same way a real fight looks nothing like Jackie Chan.
00:08:46.900 Even though Jackie Chan could kick my ass.
00:08:51.100 Well, I don't know if Jackie Chan was ever in a fist fight, okay?
00:08:53.640 I'm not, not a huge follower of his.
00:08:56.760 He is a, he is a brilliant martial artist.
00:08:58.320 I have such an utmost deep respect for his skill.
00:09:00.720 So, um, and he probably could have kicked my ass.
00:09:05.000 But, I know more about combat than he does.
00:09:10.080 And that seems like what you're interested in.
00:09:12.700 Okay?
00:09:13.180 And combat is one of those strategy level skills.
00:09:15.360 It's one of those broad spectrum skills.
00:09:19.960 Join the reg force.
00:09:22.960 It is right for you.
00:09:24.000 You are just afraid of committing three years of your life.
00:09:26.700 And yet, here's, here's a funny thing.
00:09:31.620 As a young dumb kid, which we all were, you weren't afraid of committing four or five years of your life to university.
00:09:39.160 Where you pay, what, $10,000 a year?
00:09:43.460 I'm guessing you have a lot of socialized assistance in Australia.
00:09:47.340 At least $10,000 a year.
00:09:49.700 You're paying for that.
00:09:51.780 The army is willing to pay you.
00:09:55.740 Just a train.
00:09:56.700 And, yeah, you get yelled at.
00:10:00.860 And you've got to wear the same outfit as everybody else.
00:10:03.180 But, let me ask you right now.
00:10:05.960 If you've done a three-year stint in the army.
00:10:08.880 From years 18 to 21.
00:10:13.000 And, let me, what were you doing during those years?
00:10:15.940 Was it anything particularly awesome?
00:10:19.000 Were you part of a rock band?
00:10:20.340 Were you, you know, or were you some cheese-eating, straight-out-of-high-school kid, working minimum wage, and doing nothing?
00:10:32.340 Getting drunk, driving around in old beaters, etc.
00:10:38.400 You're not missing out on anything.
00:10:46.160 Okay?
00:10:46.460 Like, listen.
00:10:46.960 The army, you will fit in there.
00:10:50.840 Okay?
00:10:51.360 You're a red-blooded Aussie male.
00:10:54.720 You will fit in.
00:10:56.060 It is intimidating.
00:10:57.920 And it's supposed to be intimidating because, even with all the modern Soviet legislation,
00:11:03.120 you know what?
00:11:03.600 The army doesn't want a bunch of pussies.
00:11:05.240 But you're not a pussy.
00:11:09.240 And, you know, I, you said that you do have a couple of other prospects in your life.
00:11:16.740 You're delivering pizzas right now.
00:11:19.360 Okay?
00:11:19.920 What are your other prospects?
00:11:21.520 Your prospect, I suspect, that the other prospects that you have in life are not,
00:11:29.000 go work for $80,000 a year and drive a Bentley.
00:11:32.740 No, you want to join the military, you will always regret it if you don't.
00:11:45.520 Suck it up.
00:11:46.480 Do it.
00:11:46.920 Take the risk.
00:11:48.340 You know, if it's really not for you, there are ways to get out.
00:11:52.200 Yeah, you kind of have to act like a bitch to get out.
00:11:56.060 But if it's really not for you, it's really not for you.
00:11:59.880 And they don't want you there.
00:12:01.260 They don't want to waste all that money that they're going to give you to be there if it's just not for you.
00:12:11.640 But it probably is for you.
00:12:13.140 At least for a little while.
00:12:14.800 You know, at least as a, you know what?
00:12:16.920 I've been there.
00:12:17.900 I've done that.
00:12:19.700 And you will be better off for it.
00:12:21.400 Now, let's address this question about combat engineer, infantry, or, again, I looked up this trade.
00:12:33.780 Because this is, I believe it's unique to Australia.
00:12:36.820 I don't think we have it in Canada.
00:12:38.900 Light cavalry scout.
00:12:40.160 Which, you know, in America, the cavalry was converted into the, if I understand correctly, and I'm ex-Canadian military, the cavalry was converted into air force, helicopters.
00:12:56.600 At least that's what we were soldiers taught me.
00:12:59.200 In Canada, Australia, and I believe Britain, the cavalry was turned into the armored.
00:13:05.420 And so, you're talking about a light armored division that is primarily tasked with wrecking and scouting.
00:13:11.100 And, I would advise, and now, alright, combat engineer is you build, you mostly blow things up.
00:13:22.860 Alright, sometimes you build bridges, mostly you make things go boom.
00:13:30.520 Infantry, everybody is infantry at the end of the day.
00:13:34.380 And you're, it really sounds to me like you're looking for some specialized skill.
00:13:38.100 Something a little bit unique.
00:13:42.700 Everybody is an infantry soldier at the end of the day.
00:13:45.580 Infantry is the best at it.
00:13:47.880 But you, you want something a little bit more than that.
00:13:51.100 Something hands-on and engaging.
00:13:54.020 But also a little bit technical.
00:13:55.900 I really think you want to go the cavalry route.
00:14:02.860 Because cavalry, what you're going to be doing,
00:14:05.260 you're going to be doing a lot of infantry stuff.
00:14:12.760 You're going to be, you know, out there, wrecking, you know,
00:14:16.120 you know, don't be afraid of the night, be afraid of what hunts in the night.
00:14:21.540 You'll be doing all of that, that great stuff, can paint on your face, radios and whatnot,
00:14:25.900 but you'll also be driving trucks around.
00:14:28.000 You'll be driving armored vehicles.
00:14:29.520 And now this, this is actually a distinct skill.
00:14:35.620 Right now, like, yes, we are seeing this switch to automated Google cars driving all over the place,
00:14:40.860 but nonetheless, there's always going to be a need for truck drivers.
00:14:46.920 For people that know how to maneuver a vehicle around a site.
00:14:50.900 So that right there is a distinct skill, all on its own.
00:14:56.040 Of the three, I think that's the one you probably want to go for,
00:14:59.580 unless the idea of playing around with C4 sounds like a lot of fun to you.
00:15:08.720 Basically, to sum up the three trades that you mentioned.
00:15:11.920 Engineers are the most laid-back guys that are, like, they are completely mellow all the time.
00:15:21.880 And they have no fear of death.
00:15:24.340 They're like, uh, oh yeah, you should probably be a bit more careful next time you handle that thing.
00:15:29.460 Could have gone off and killed both of us.
00:15:32.100 But no, it's all good.
00:15:32.940 Infantry guys are the, the, the hoorah, hardcore, the, uh, let's get in there, kick some doors down, let's, um, let's hurt some people.
00:15:44.820 And the, the Air Cav, or, sorry, not Air Cav, what is it?
00:15:50.400 Uh, Cavalry Scout, the impression I get.
00:15:53.580 These are the, the lazy, skinny SOBs that can do infantry stuff, but they prefer to drive there.
00:15:59.740 And I'm getting, I'm getting the impression that that's you.
00:16:04.780 So, that, that would be my recommendation, just reading between the lines.
00:16:08.360 Now.
00:16:11.160 Next you say,
00:16:12.460 Then again, the Western economies are so over-regulated that I wouldn't be surprised if to get a job as a laborer would still,
00:16:19.220 I would still have to spend as much time at trade school if you had 10 years experience as a combat engineer as you would if you come out of high school.
00:16:26.020 Actually, no.
00:16:27.180 Listen, this is the next thing.
00:16:28.260 This is why you go reg force, by the way.
00:16:31.220 If you stay reserve force, then, yeah, you get a decent paycheck for showing up on weekends.
00:16:36.260 Maybe you can do a six-month roto somewhere and get some combat pay.
00:16:40.200 If you go reg force, you are going to cap out very quickly on learning the job skills.
00:16:49.320 You know, you'll still be doing exercises every weekend.
00:16:51.620 You're getting a little, you're getting a little bit better.
00:16:53.280 But there's only so many courses that you can take.
00:16:56.300 So many courses that are offered on how to be a recce, how to do, I don't know, jump school, how to do drive or wheeled, etc.
00:17:05.360 The army is also chock full of all these other courses that you can be taking.
00:17:14.080 You know, I don't know specifically how it works in Australia, but I guarantee you, you can constantly be getting certifications under your belt.
00:17:23.040 You know, the army is, it's like we've got nothing to do because we're not really at war, but we need to have people being busy.
00:17:30.940 You can get certifications.
00:17:32.820 You know, you start off with the cavalry scout, maybe you get some automotive certification.
00:17:42.080 That seems complimentary.
00:17:43.680 Seems like your chain of command would approve of that.
00:17:45.900 You know, maybe even go off base, get the military to pay for you to take a college course.
00:17:50.140 All of this stuff is available if you're in reg force.
00:17:55.320 You know, and even if that stuff isn't available, you can quickly attain a leadership position.
00:18:01.920 So you're not, yeah, I was some jerk in the army that carried a gun around.
00:18:06.520 You're the guy that, yes, I had eight men directly under my command.
00:18:10.880 I reported to these people.
00:18:12.380 Well, worst case scenario, you have leadership management experience under your belt.
00:18:22.640 It might still be difficult getting a job in the civvy world, but, well, first of all, you'll know how to act like a leader.
00:18:34.020 You will learn that.
00:18:36.380 And second, people in general will respect it.
00:18:39.620 And third, you can probably get some certifications under your belt while in the military.
00:18:44.500 Paid for by the military while they pay you to be taking the courses.
00:18:48.320 All right, going on.
00:18:54.960 What are the best army jobs to go for when it comes to finding employment in the real world?
00:18:59.920 And what was my experience?
00:19:03.100 I've kind of been covering that.
00:19:04.580 But the best bet is, like, if you, for money, is become a maritime engineer.
00:19:15.840 Become Scotty on Star Trek.
00:19:18.440 Okay, they'll pay for an engineering degree.
00:19:21.300 They'll, and then you can get a, you know, then you get, you, by serving, you have to work a few years as an engineer before you actually get certified as an engineer.
00:19:30.040 So, by the time you are done with the military, you are now officially a professional engineer and an ex-military engineer.
00:19:37.680 That's probably out the door for you right now.
00:19:43.360 Just because, like, it's been too many years since you got out of high school.
00:19:47.240 Okay?
00:19:48.540 That's just the hard facts of the matter.
00:19:50.340 If you're looking purely at employment, SIG Ops, radio work, that's a huge one.
00:20:01.320 Doing anything with radios or information technology, those are the big ones.
00:20:08.920 You know, also, if you get into any of the trades, the military hires a lot of tradespeople.
00:20:14.240 Okay?
00:20:15.640 And I think there might be other subdivisions of engineers that are more into welding and doing that sort of stuff than blowing stuff up.
00:20:22.580 You know, I've hung out with the combat engineers for the most part.
00:20:27.940 Really, it's up to you.
00:20:29.300 What are you interested in?
00:20:31.300 You know, it sounds to me like you're interested in Air Cav.
00:20:33.920 And you can probably, if you put in three years to Air Cav, where you're getting paid, and after basic, you know, you can go off base and meet the local girls at the bar and the local men who hate you.
00:20:50.440 You know, you're getting three years of room and board paid for, and having a job that's, you know, more rewarding and not that much harder than others, actually learning real skills, actually developing as a man, you know, it's a lot better than being a greeter at Walmart.
00:21:11.560 You can probably switch to another trade.
00:21:13.640 You need to figure out, if there's something that really interests you, then go for that.
00:21:21.720 But it sounds to me like you already have something that interests you.
00:21:25.120 International politics that you were studying in school?
00:21:28.280 Yeah, useless degree, but that doesn't mean that you're a useless person.
00:21:31.460 It means that you got scammed into taking the wrong degree.
00:21:33.300 If you're interested in politics and history and diplomacy and, you know what, man? Combat arms.
00:21:43.020 You're really interested in combat arms? Go combat arms.
00:21:47.100 It's dangerous. Yes, it's dangerous, and we'll get to that in a minute, but I think cavalry scout.
00:21:54.320 That's really sounding good to me.
00:21:56.640 All right, moving on.
00:21:59.780 Yeah, and you said I'll probably go for light cavalry scout over riflemen.
00:22:03.300 Um, and actually, here's the other thing.
00:22:07.980 Listen, what you go in for is not necessarily what you're going to be doing.
00:22:13.180 Um, you're going to be doing whatever you're told to be doing.
00:22:16.000 And again, if you went into the reserves as an engineer, as a cavalry scout, as whatever,
00:22:21.420 what, and then you go overseas, you do a six-month roto, um, guess what?
00:22:26.800 You're, you're, you're the crappy version of infantry.
00:22:30.420 That's all you are.
00:22:33.300 It's because, like, you're not good enough to be on the front lines with the other cavalry scouts.
00:22:37.760 Or, or let's say there's an infantry guy that has, like, a lot of experience in the reserves.
00:22:42.500 He might be the cavalry scout if you go overseas, not you.
00:22:46.100 So, it's whatever they need you to be doing is what you're going to be doing.
00:22:49.060 Um, like, you, you kind of choose your specialty.
00:22:53.200 Think of it like an RPG.
00:22:54.880 You know, um, it's like, yeah, you've got the one rogue that's better with a bow and arrow,
00:22:59.160 but you need somebody to slash a sword.
00:23:01.380 What are they going to be doing?
00:23:02.220 A lot of opportunities for growth, lots of opportunities to get additional skills,
00:23:08.200 to show what you're good at, to develop yourself, but ultimately, you're going to be doing what you're going to be doing.
00:23:13.660 And you'll be getting paid fairly well for it, and it'll be a hell of a lot better than delivering pizza.
00:23:19.380 Um, now, and this is the, the, the, the bit that's really important.
00:23:27.760 I honestly don't think I'm patriotic enough to die for my country.
00:23:31.140 Five years ago, I would have been, but I have to say, but I, I have to say depression has killed my nationalism.
00:23:39.700 Now, and then you ask, if, if Russia invaded Canada, would Irina be prepared to die for Soviet Canuckistan?
00:23:45.020 And, and, honestly, man, I would.
00:23:49.380 Do what the problem is.
00:23:57.020 The problem isn't that I wouldn't be willing to die for my country.
00:24:00.660 It's that my country wouldn't ask me to die for it when it would matter.
00:24:05.800 That's a difficulty.
00:24:07.960 Um, and this is, this is why I'm often hesitant to recommend the military to people.
00:24:13.880 Because, especially in America, I don't, I don't want some idealistic 17-year-old with a bright future getting his legs blown off and, uh, ask Krakistan to help the Taliban take over the, the country.
00:24:28.260 Which is what we're fighting, we're not, we're now allied with the frickin' terrorists.
00:24:32.160 Listen, ours is not to question why ours is but to do and die.
00:24:41.860 You join the military because that's what you are.
00:24:44.580 You know, like, you, you stand up for, you fight because that's who you are.
00:24:50.280 And, um, that's who you are.
00:24:56.220 Don't be blind about it.
00:24:59.300 Don't, um, go out of your way to put yourself in harm's way.
00:25:03.620 But, you know, quite frankly, here's the thing.
00:25:10.140 We're, we're not really fighting any wars right now.
00:25:13.160 Yeah, I, I mean, we have some undeclared wars and, like, one or two declared ones.
00:25:16.900 But they're police actions.
00:25:18.220 They're, they're, they're frickin' jokes.
00:25:20.000 Okay, this is not World War II.
00:25:21.840 And the thing is, if it were World War II, if it does get that hot, and it might,
00:25:25.940 then, um, that will be a country worth fighting for.
00:25:34.400 I, I know, like, listen, man, you are living right now in the absolute worst place of Western civilization.
00:25:42.840 Uh, you're, you're a young man.
00:25:45.260 And young men, even at the best of times, young men are at the bottom of the totem pole.
00:25:50.180 So life sucks.
00:25:52.020 You know, and...
00:25:53.940 There, there's very, there's very little, there's very little nation to be nationalistic about.
00:26:04.800 But if Australia were to get into such a conflict, an existential conflict that actually mattered,
00:26:15.900 then it would suddenly become a nation worth fighting for.
00:26:23.940 I mean, I, I'm getting older.
00:26:29.120 My body isn't what it once was.
00:26:31.560 Um, but if there was some threat to Canada, or, or to America, uh, like an actual existential threat,
00:26:39.940 as much as I like the Russians, if they invade, I know which side I'm on.
00:26:45.240 Um, I, I, I might, I might still volunteer and sign up for it.
00:26:52.520 Uh, just because that's, that's kind of what I do.
00:26:55.360 And I, I think that's what you do as well.
00:26:58.900 And ultimately, you're not fighting for the, the corrupt politicians or for the, the nation state.
00:27:05.920 You're fighting for the guy next to you.
00:27:07.040 You're fighting because you're a soldier.
00:27:13.380 You know, I, I, for Americans, I'll generally say go Coast Guard.
00:27:16.580 If, if a young American, you know, like usually like 17, 18, young, idealistic, naive, um, asks me,
00:27:23.120 I'll say, you know, join the Coast Guard in America because that's, uh, that's a lot safer.
00:27:28.820 And, and still military.
00:27:30.400 You're, you're still doing good.
00:27:31.540 Okay.
00:27:32.280 You're still, it's, it's safer, not perfectly safe.
00:27:38.520 They don't have a Coast Guard in, um, Australia.
00:27:41.400 It's a division of the Navy.
00:27:46.440 So that, that's the real question.
00:27:49.040 Um, fight for the ideals, man.
00:27:54.280 Like, like obviously, like we're all idealists around here and things have never been perfect.
00:27:59.820 Things are pretty bad right now.
00:28:03.460 But, I, I'm sensing two big things from you.
00:28:06.460 On the one hand, you, you feel the, the romantic excitement of being in the military.
00:28:15.400 Like, if you were just a thrill seeker, you would do, you'd dive out of airplanes or you'd rock climb or you'd, you'd, you'd, you're in Australia.
00:28:24.680 So you'd, like, punch out crocodiles or whatever it is that, that you crazy Aussies do.
00:28:30.420 Um, yeah, you wouldn't be thinking about military, cold, wet, tired, hungry, you know, um, moments of terror interspersed by hours of boredom.
00:28:39.260 You're more than just a thrill seeker.
00:28:41.800 All right?
00:28:42.460 Like, anybody can seek, go play, go play a horror video game so you get, you get a thrill.
00:28:47.360 You want that.
00:28:48.640 Yeah, you, you want more than just a thrill.
00:28:51.000 On the other hand, you also want economic opportunity.
00:28:57.780 The army will give you both of those.
00:29:01.760 It's, um, you do, listen, every job's dangerous.
00:29:09.580 And the military, it's a little bit more dangerous than most jobs.
00:29:12.480 In fact, though, uh, keep in mind that most, most military deaths are actually not from combat, but it's because young men are expected to take responsibility and do things they don't know how to do.
00:29:25.980 Like, most deaths are guys falling off of roofs, guys getting electrocuted.
00:29:30.500 Uh, these are preventable deaths if you keep switched on.
00:29:36.880 Same thing for combat.
00:29:38.580 I mean, no guarantees.
00:29:40.420 Sometimes, you know, that frag just had your name on it.
00:29:43.700 But, stay switched on.
00:29:46.940 Stay situationally aware.
00:29:48.600 Now, I, I can't promise you anything.
00:29:56.060 And, it's, ultimately, ultimately, it's, it's all up to you.
00:29:59.220 But, this is my perspective.
00:30:00.260 This is what I see in you.
00:30:02.280 You want to join the military.
00:30:03.680 If you don't, you're going to regret it.
00:30:07.220 You know, when you're 30, 35, 40, you are going to regret that when I was younger, I didn't join the military.
00:30:12.680 In fact, geez, during my basic train, there was actually a, uh, a guy, he seemed really old at the time.
00:30:19.760 He might have only been 30.
00:30:23.160 I think he was older than that, though, 35, 40.
00:30:25.640 He always wanted to join the military.
00:30:27.620 And he, he joined at an advanced age.
00:30:32.360 Because he just always wanted to.
00:30:34.080 And I, I think you'll regret it if you don't.
00:30:37.000 And, and, and second of all, it, you strike me as having the intelligence and the cojones
00:30:41.320 to, to really do well in the military.
00:30:45.560 You know, ignore what people say.
00:30:46.860 They actually do want intelligence and soldiers.
00:30:48.860 It's just, it's just not mandatory.
00:30:52.500 And there's, if you keep your eyes open, again, situationally aware, um, switched on.
00:30:59.820 What are my opportunities here?
00:31:01.520 What will the, the army pay me for?
00:31:03.600 You know, what courses?
00:31:04.760 How can I get all of this?
00:31:06.380 There are so many bennies if you're paying attention and you're thinking.
00:31:10.000 And so, I, I know you said you have a couple of other opportunities right now, but, dude,
00:31:16.620 you're delivering pizzas.
00:31:18.700 You know, three years, five years of your life, making something out of yourself, good
00:31:23.380 Lord, by then, you might start looking at the pension and decide to do another 15 or
00:31:28.900 20.
00:31:32.880 So, I hope that helped, brother.
00:31:34.800 Best of luck with you, with everything.
00:31:36.820 Best of luck with you, with everything.
00:31:38.820 And keep yourself safe.
00:31:41.160 Irini out.
00:31:41.700 We can do it.
00:31:42.140 We can.
00:31:42.740 We can.
00:31:43.480 We can.
00:31:43.840 We can.
00:31:44.600 We can.
00:31:45.760 We can.
00:31:46.800 We can.
00:31:47.700 We can.
00:31:49.140 We can.
00:31:50.960 We can.
00:31:51.720 We can.
00:31:52.940 We can.
00:31:53.840 We can.
00:31:54.740 We can.
00:31:55.380 We can.
00:31:57.580 We can.
00:32:00.220 We can.
00:32:00.380 We can.
00:32:01.320 We can.
00:32:01.620 We can.
00:32:02.240 We can.
00:32:02.460 We can.
00:32:02.980 We can.
00:32:03.520 We can.
00:32:04.720 We can.
00:32:07.320 We can.
00:32:07.940 We can.
00:32:08.560 We can.
00:32:08.840 Wow.
