In this episode, I discuss the return of masculinity in the 80's and 90's, and how it relates to the new YouTube series, Red Cobra Kai, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger's Johnny the Karate Kid. I also discuss the rise of the internet, and why I think 2018 is going to be the year the internet shit its pants.

00:00:00.000 So, this is a requested video from John, who wanted me to review the first couple episodes
00:00:07.960 of the new YouTube Red Cobra Kai series.
00:00:11.680 And I enjoyed the first two episodes so much that I paid for the entire first season.
00:00:16.880 And guys, the show is great.
00:00:19.700 If you haven't heard of it, it's a follow-up to the Karate Kid movies from the late 80s,
00:00:25.240 90s, and this one focuses on Johnny, the bully from the original movie, and how he opens
00:00:33.060 up the Cobra Kai karate studio to teach these pansy millennials how to not be pansies anymore. 1.00
00:00:40.900 The series is absolutely brilliant.
00:00:42.820 It has so many great lines in it.
00:00:45.980 Go and watch it.
00:00:47.140 Go watch the first couple episodes for free, and if you like those two episodes, you won't
00:00:52.040 be disappointed by the rest of the season. 0.97
00:00:53.600 It is extremely red pill, extremely shitlord. 0.95
00:00:58.800 It's excellent.
00:00:59.740 I heartily recommend it.
00:01:01.820 Now, in this video, what I'd like to discuss is what I think this series signifies.
00:01:10.260 Because it strikes me that this is part of a cultural phenomenon that I've been picking
00:01:16.880 up here and there.
00:01:18.400 And that phenomenon is the return to 1980s virility, to the masculine culture of the 1980s.
00:01:31.400 Not a throwback to the 1980s, but a resurrection of masculinity.
00:01:37.380 Bringing back the Arnold Schwarzenegger, the Karate Kid movies, the fast cars, the making
00:01:44.200 money, the being awesome of the 80s.
00:01:48.460 This is the stuff that's making a comeback.
00:01:50.780 And this movie is such a perfect example of it.
00:01:53.660 You know, it starts off with Johnny, who's just been a loser ever since high school.
00:01:59.220 His life just hasn't been working out for him.
00:02:02.180 He's working odd jobs, driving an old red sports car.
00:02:05.660 And believe me, I have more than, I see more than a little bit of myself in him right there.
00:02:12.260 But he gets his act together.
00:02:14.420 And he finds a purpose again.
00:02:16.500 It's like the world had no place for a masculine man for the past 20 years.
00:02:21.600 But now, now it does.
00:02:24.660 Now it's time to make a comeback. 0.99
00:02:26.500 And it's time to teach these kids how to stop being punks and geeks and nerds and losers. 1.00
00:02:32.300 And it's time to punch them in the face and say, no faggot, get your act together, go win. 1.00
00:02:38.820 And I think this is happening. 1.00
00:02:41.760 It's happening.
00:02:45.060 But interestingly enough, not on the internet.
00:02:48.960 One of the idiosyncrasies with Johnny is that he doesn't know what anything is.
00:02:58.940 He doesn't know what Facebook is.
00:03:00.220 He doesn't know what an iPad is. 0.98
00:03:02.740 Like, he is completely ignorant of all this technology. 0.81
00:03:06.600 Almost to the point of comedy.
00:03:10.660 You know, it is to the point of comedy in some scenes.
00:03:13.040 Because who actually doesn't know what Facebook is these days?
00:03:17.220 You know, our grandparents know what Facebook is.
00:03:20.840 But while this might have been intended as a joke,
00:03:23.300 I think it was actually touching on something that is happening right now.
00:03:27.540 And that is the move away from the internet.
00:03:33.240 I think 2018 is going to be the year the internet shit its pants.
00:03:38.440 Part of it has been the increasing levels of censorship coming from, you know, 0.90
00:03:45.940 the usual, you know, YouTube, Google, Facebook, you name it.
00:03:51.480 The left-wing censorship, Wikipedia, that's been going on with the internet,
00:03:55.820 the silencing of voices, that's been a major aspect of it.
00:04:00.780 There's also the adpocalypse, which actually wasn't so much censorship.
00:04:05.740 It was the fact that advertising on the internet has never worked.
00:04:10.220 Google's just been covering it up.
00:04:13.600 And then we get the internet blood sports.
00:04:18.740 Which seemed to have finally petered out, thank goodness.
00:04:26.020 Because here's the thing.
00:04:28.000 When the market goes down, when things get difficult,
00:04:32.320 when the tide goes out, you find out who's not wearing shorts.
00:04:37.860 And it turns out that a lot of these people on the internet,
00:04:42.100 you know, it was nothing but persona.
00:04:44.060 It was nothing but an image they were throwing up there.
00:04:47.600 And they couldn't walk the talk.
00:04:50.080 And that's what blood sports accomplished. 1.00
00:04:51.960 It exposed these idiots for who they were. 1.00
00:04:53.960 You know, ten years ago, to be popular on the internet, 1.00
00:05:03.340 you had to actually do something.
00:05:05.040 You had to write a blog, or you had to be a regular contributor on a forum.
00:05:09.680 With the advent of the ADD internet, of Twitter, Instagram,
00:05:15.740 even the casual memeing that you get on Discord,
00:05:19.960 the persona could dominate.
00:05:23.640 Yeah, there were a couple of personas from the old internet
00:05:26.400 that we found out they weren't who they claimed they were.
00:05:30.920 But even that, the persona was something.
00:05:34.280 Whereas now we seem to be in this era of snark and jealousy
00:05:38.100 and just people throwing up fake personalities on the internet
00:05:41.200 and these fake personalities fighting with one another.
00:05:43.840 That's not masculinity. 0.50
00:05:45.460 That's not virile.
00:05:47.500 That's not virtuous.
00:05:48.400 That's not interesting. 0.99
00:05:49.940 That's boring as shit. 0.99
00:05:54.040 You know, to paraphrase Johnny, 1.00
00:05:56.340 that's on the spectrum.
00:05:57.860 Get off of the spectrum, whatever the hell that is.
00:06:04.580 So the internet, the whole online community,
00:06:07.540 the online movement,
00:06:09.080 all of this nonsense,
00:06:09.860 it's really blown its load.
00:06:11.160 But there were really good ideas talked about
00:06:15.920 during this whole time.
00:06:20.540 And while the circle jerk that we're seeing online
00:06:23.540 might be going away,
00:06:25.740 we can hope it's going away.
00:06:26.700 I mean, you're still going to have it online.
00:06:29.620 Quite frankly, there's a lot of sad, angry people out there
00:06:32.940 who in real life,
00:06:35.280 they're just not happy with their life.
00:06:37.120 They're not happy with where they are,
00:06:38.780 where they're going.
00:06:39.640 And so rather than getting their act together
00:06:43.400 and joining Cobra Kai,
00:06:45.840 they go on the internet
00:06:46.960 and send mean tweets to other people.
00:06:51.480 That's probably still going to be there.
00:06:52.940 In fact, I think there's going to be more and more of that
00:06:55.180 because it's, you know,
00:06:58.080 the bad money chases out the good.
00:07:00.340 When you go on Twitter
00:07:01.420 and 99% of it snark,
00:07:04.500 the good people are less prone
00:07:06.740 to post interesting tweets.
00:07:14.660 So it's a little bit sad
00:07:16.040 if you're an internet junkie,
00:07:17.420 but what I think we're going to be seeing
00:07:19.340 is more and more people moving
00:07:21.680 into the real world.
00:07:23.900 It's actually walking the walk
00:07:26.840 that all of this talk was about
00:07:29.440 in the first place.
00:07:32.460 People are getting really,
00:07:34.400 really sick of the soy.
00:07:36.440 They're getting sick of the weakness.
00:07:39.760 You know, there is a lot of people
00:07:41.280 waking up to things.
00:07:43.340 And you're not going to find it
00:07:45.460 on the internet
00:07:45.960 because the smart people,
00:07:47.720 smart people don't want to be on the internet.
00:07:50.820 Smart people don't want to have
00:07:52.240 a three-hour argument
00:07:53.260 with some stranger
00:07:54.520 with an anime avatar.
00:07:55.800 real people want to have
00:08:02.580 an actual conversation
00:08:03.640 in real life
00:08:04.420 where if the person acts
00:08:05.700 like they're somebody
00:08:06.360 from the internet, 1.00
00:08:07.220 you can punch them in the face 1.00
00:08:08.580 and shut their mouths. 1.00
00:08:13.560 So I think this is happening.
00:08:15.220 There is this return to masculinity.
00:08:19.620 There's this return to virileness,
00:08:21.780 to virtue.
00:08:22.260 And it's happening right now.
00:08:24.820 But it's not happening online
00:08:27.880 and thank God.
00:08:31.180 We're seeing a change
00:08:32.640 in the fundamental culture.
00:08:34.980 Cobra Kai is one of the earliest,
00:08:36.860 earliest bits of zeitgeist
00:08:40.280 picking up on this.
00:08:42.120 But it's just the start.
00:08:44.380 So, guys, go check it out.
00:08:47.860 The first two episodes are free.
00:08:49.600 It's really,
00:08:50.140 it's a very good series.
00:08:51.440 I really enjoyed it.
00:08:53.160 I had a lot of laughs during it.
00:08:55.800 It's very switched on.
00:08:57.260 And you can buy
00:08:57.820 the subsequent episodes
00:08:59.100 for a couple bucks apiece
00:09:00.640 depending on where you live.
00:09:01.880 Something like that.
00:09:02.540 They're pretty cheap.
00:09:03.940 You know,
00:09:04.240 you're better spending,
00:09:05.680 you're better off spending your money
00:09:07.200 on Cobra Kai
00:09:08.780 than on Han Soilo,
00:09:12.020 a Soy Wars story.
00:09:16.680 So, yeah,
00:09:17.780 go check out Cobra Kai.
00:09:19.260 Chances are you'll love it.
00:09:20.120 Go put this stuff out there
00:09:23.280 in real life.
00:09:25.400 Yeah, 1.00
00:09:25.700 and fuck the MMA fighters. 1.00
00:09:28.220 Karate is the cool martial arts. 1.00
00:09:30.380 I don't care
00:09:31.200 what anybody else says.
00:09:33.460 Karate is where it's at.
00:09:34.820 God bless you folks.
00:09:37.060 Thank you
00:09:37.640 for the sponsored video,
00:09:40.100 John.
00:09:41.100 And, uh,
00:09:43.240 Deus Volt.
00:09:45.300 Irini out.
00:09:45.960 I love you.
00:09:47.520 I love you.
00:09:48.620 Bye-bye.
00:09:49.220 амиique.
00:09:49.840 Come on.
