00:00:01.000 It's Gun Week!
00:00:02.000 Now the Founding Fathers understood that only an armed people could truly be a free people.
00:00:09.000 So this week I invite you to join me and Mug Club resident gun aficionado Mr. Guns and Beer as we tackle the subject of firearms from every angle possible.
00:00:22.000 Today's episode we take on all of the basics that you need to know About rifles and shotguns, this is Long Guns 101.
00:00:35.000 Day two of gun week with Mr. Gear.
00:00:38.000 You know him as Guns and Gear, but Dr. Gear, depending.
00:00:42.000 Honorary.
00:00:43.000 Yes, honorary doctor.
00:00:44.000 Today we'll be discussing why the four firearm safety rules or the universal safety rules of firearms handling are wrong.
00:00:51.000 I had a high school teacher who I found out he had an honorary doctorate in philosophy.
00:00:55.000 So I just call him Bob.
00:00:58.000 We're doing long guns today.
00:01:00.000 So we did pistols, we're going to do common myths associated with firearms, and we'll also do a ballistics gel video with some pretty cool cameras.
00:01:06.000 But long guns encompassing rifles and shotguns.
00:01:09.000 If you're not a gun person, again we're trying to provide you with an entry point.
00:01:13.000 Let's explain to people first, I guess, what you would be taking into account why you might need a long gun, right, and what might be appropriate.
00:01:19.000 So, long guns increase lethality, generally speaking.
00:01:23.000 The cartridges they fire are more powerful, they have longer barrels, it has more energy.
00:01:28.000 Traditionally, think of like hunting.
00:01:29.000 You're going to be using a rifle in most cases for that.
00:01:31.000 Additionally, they're just easier to shoot well.
00:01:34.000 The reason for that is you have more points of contact on the firearm.
00:01:39.000 So, just as an example, as opposed to if we had There's no good way, by the way, to aim.
00:01:44.000 We're in a very limited space, okay?
00:01:44.000 There's not.
00:01:46.000 We know it's unloaded, so... Corey doesn't like me.
00:01:50.000 I didn't like you.
00:01:52.000 But so, your point of contact is here, you also have a contact point on your cheek, your hand here, and then out here, so it's much easier to control and get accurate hits than it is with a pistol that's just out here in space.
00:02:04.000 Additionally, depending on the type of firearm you get, an AR-15, for example, your capacity can go up as well.
00:02:09.000 Right, and so really with long guns, a little bit different from handguns, we were talking about a bedside firearm, and you recommended, you said if people are getting their first gun, you recommend a handgun because it can be more multi-purpose.
00:02:18.000 Correct.
00:02:18.000 With a long gun, you're probably looking at hunting, home defense, or really target shooting.
00:02:23.000 Right, maybe competitive shooting.
00:02:25.000 Yeah, maybe competitive shooting.
00:02:26.000 So we have a couple of different firearms here.
00:02:29.000 We have a basic pump shotgun, we have a Benelli M4 semi-automatic shotgun, and of course, America's favorite rifle, The AR-15.
00:02:36.000 We have a couple of variations here.
00:02:38.000 Actually, they come from Watchtower.
00:02:40.000 It's the last American firearms manufacturer.
00:02:42.000 Every single component is American.
00:02:43.000 They're doing it here in the United States, and it's a pretty cool company that just formed, so thanks to them for providing these.
00:02:49.000 Just to be clear, we have this because it's patriotically themed.
00:02:52.000 I would never I wouldn't either.
00:02:55.000 But you know how hard that is to do?
00:02:56.000 Very hard.
00:02:57.000 It's very difficult.
00:02:58.000 It's a work of art.
00:02:59.000 But I mean, I would have to be like a pimp who loves his country.
00:03:03.000 And this is their base model AR-15.
00:03:06.000 You know, kind of an easier point to entry.
00:03:07.000 These have been zeroed in.
00:03:09.000 So let's go first, before we get to the AR-15, we'll probably have a lot on that.
00:03:12.000 Explain to people the difference.
00:03:14.000 Shotgun, rifle, I know that everyone watching who's a gun enthusiast, you know the difference.
00:03:18.000 A lot of people don't.
00:03:19.000 I'll get asked that.
00:03:20.000 They're like, well isn't it the same thing?
00:03:22.000 Yeah, so shotguns, generally speaking, are going to fire 12-gauge or 20-gauge, those are the most common.
00:03:27.000 And what that means is it's just a larger projectile, and most shotgun rounds, not all, have multiple projectiles in them, whether they be birdshot or buckshot.
00:03:36.000 Birdshot, generally speaking, is designed for exactly what it sounds like, birds.
00:03:40.000 Buckshot is designed for what it sounds like, animals.
00:03:42.000 Buckshot typically is going to have anywhere from 8 to 12 pellets in it, which is individual pieces of metal, whereas birdshot can have tons.
00:03:51.000 People say, spread, if you just aim a shotgun in the general direction, right, it's going to eviscerate it.
00:03:56.000 And typically, you have two different types of shotguns, which this one here is a pump-action shotgun.
00:04:00.000 This is a Remington 870, probably the most manufactured shotgun in the world.
00:04:05.000 You have to manually work the action with each shot.
00:04:05.000 Very, very common.
00:04:08.000 So basically, you're going to press the trigger.
00:04:10.000 And then at that point, you'll be able to cycle the next round into the action.
00:04:14.000 And it just keeps going until it's out of rounds.
00:04:16.000 Whereas we have the Benelli M4.
00:04:19.000 Arguably the best semi-automatic shotgun in the planet.
00:04:22.000 And this one is semi-automatic, meaning every time you pull the trigger, it will cycle by itself, rather, and self-load until it's out of rounds.
00:04:29.000 And same thing with the AR-15.
00:04:31.000 Just to be clear, semi-automatic.
00:04:33.000 Again, I know it's remedial for some people.
00:04:35.000 That means you pull the trigger once and it fires one round.
00:04:38.000 Did that hit?
00:04:41.000 They use the term automatic, semi-automatic.
00:04:43.000 They try to say semi-automatic so you think it's a machine gun.
00:04:45.000 We'll do another installment on that.
00:04:47.000 AR-15 is a semi-automatic rifle.
00:04:49.000 For more on these, go to Watchtowerfirearms.com.
00:04:52.000 Veteran owned and the last true American firearm manufacturer.
00:04:56.000 Let's go, we'll shoot all of these, but I guess we might as well, it's pretty easy to pick which one you want, you know, a rifle or a shotgun.
00:05:04.000 Any of these would be suitable for home defense.
00:05:06.000 Yep, for sure.
00:05:07.000 Now, for shotguns, if you're using defensive loads, they're going to have more recoil, for sure, especially than an AR-15.
00:05:14.000 An AR-15 is a very light recoiling gun, whereas a shotgun, if you're using slugs or buckshot, is definitely going to have some punch to it.
00:05:21.000 So if you're somebody who's recoil-averse, just keep that in mind as well.
00:05:26.000 And look, I will say, I don't want to veer you one way, but an AR-15 does make a lot of sense for people looking for a rifle for home defense.
00:05:31.000 It is versatile, it can be used for hunting in the proper scenarios, very easy to control, very light recoiling, very reliable model of firearm, and there's a reason that it's incredibly popular.
00:05:42.000 It's something that's pretty easy for people to use.
00:05:44.000 I mean, right, it'd be tough for someone to go wrong with a good quality AR-15.
00:05:48.000 Yes, assuming it's a good quality one, that's your point, yes.
00:05:51.000 And we do know with Watchtower they are, and we do know that there are a lot of them, but there are some out there that are awful.
00:05:56.000 I mean, that bullet would hit them sideways.
00:05:58.000 Yes, that's a real thing.
00:06:00.000 Now, like Hugh's saying though, I take a lot of new shooters out just doing what I do, and a lot of them, knowing nothing about guns, will gravitate to the AR-15s just because they're very pleasant to shoot, and they don't even understand that it has more stopping power than pistols.
00:06:15.000 They're just looking at it because it's more pleasant to shoot, easier to shoot well.
00:06:18.000 So let's really quickly, what we'll do is we have the magic of a time warp.
00:06:22.000 We'll clear the table and then focus on kind of a basic AR model and we'll do a safety check, explain the basics in and out and then we'll go to the rink.
00:06:31.000 Sounds good.
00:06:35.000 Okay, so basic safety checking, like we do with the handguns, the scariest rifle in existence, as we well know, the AR-15.
00:06:42.000 This is Watchtower's kind of more basic model, obviously high quality, but without as many bells and whistles as this being skeletonized.
00:06:49.000 So, Mr. Guns and Gear, show people if they approach an AR-15, you know.
00:06:54.000 So if you actually find one of these in the street, good for you.
00:06:54.000 Sure.
00:06:59.000 But it's going to be most likely in this configuration here with our bolt carrier group, which is this part here, forward.
00:07:05.000 So basically the way to check and see if it's loaded is we're going to pull on our charging handle and then on the left side of the rifle we have this piece here which is our bolt lock and bolt release and so doing it on camera is a little weird but you're going to push in and lock that back At that point, you can look in the chamber, verify that it is unloaded, and proceed accordingly.
00:07:28.000 The other controls that you need to know about here are going to be your safety.
00:07:31.000 On this gun, it's ambidextrous, meaning it's on both sides of the gun.
00:07:34.000 However, many of them will be left side only.
00:07:37.000 That is the fire position.
00:07:39.000 That is the safe position.
00:07:40.000 Unfortunately, this one doesn't have a third position, but if we had our rights, we would have a third position that would go forward, and you'd be able to fire it.
00:07:48.000 At first I was like, hey, watchtower sent us free guns, there's a sponsor, but then I realized it was a rights thing.
00:07:52.000 Yes.
00:07:54.000 So, unfortunately, this one doesn't have that.
00:07:56.000 Here is our trigger.
00:07:57.000 Of course, in order to fire it, it will have to be in the fire position.
00:08:02.000 This is actually a match trigger, so it's kind of a fancy one.
00:08:04.000 And then over on this side of the rifle, we have our magazine release, which is this button right here.
00:08:09.000 And so if we had our magazine in there, you could push that.
00:08:14.000 We'll call it out.
00:08:15.000 Those are your basic controls on an AR-15.
00:08:17.000 Yeah, it's pretty simple.
00:08:19.000 We'll take it apart after we go to the range and kind of show people how to clean it.
00:08:22.000 A little more involved than some of the handguns, but not nearly as intimidating as you would think.
00:08:25.000 So, this is one where definitely we'll bring in Gerald.
00:08:29.000 And I haven't fired actually an AR in a while because I've been firing a 9mm carbine the last couple of years and I gifted it.
00:08:37.000 I did a legal transfer to my friend who had moved here so we could have a long gun and he couldn't have a handgun.
00:08:42.000 It was my only AR.
00:08:43.000 So I haven't used one probably in a couple of years.
00:08:45.000 So this will be remedial.
00:08:46.000 Let's go to the range and you show us how to hit the broadside of a barn.
00:08:50.000 I'll do my best.
00:08:57.000 So on the range with long guns, one of us has significantly more experience than the rest of us.
00:09:04.000 So we'll be doing seated shooting, which you just said is almost impossible to screw up.
00:09:09.000 It's pretty hard.
00:09:09.000 I'll do my best.
00:09:10.000 So when we were zeroing in the sights, I kept hitting the target a hundred yards.
00:09:13.000 I thought, hey, that's not, then he was like, well, basically a nutless monkey can do that.
00:09:17.000 We'll set the bar so low I still have to shoot.
00:09:20.000 And then we'll do some standing.
00:09:21.000 But the AR is something that a lot of people probably want to focus on because it's very popular and it's very likely that they'll be choosing it.
00:09:27.000 And one thing that people here notice, it's a lot louder than it is recoiling.
00:09:32.000 And so do you think that's maybe kind of why people get the wrong impression of it?
00:09:37.000 Well, that's certainly part of it.
00:09:38.000 It depends how your rifle's set up.
00:09:39.000 These ones are set up with muzzle brakes, which help with mitigating recoil and getting fast follow-up shots.
00:09:44.000 Some people like that, but they're definitely louder.
00:09:46.000 If you had a flash hider on there, it would cut that down.
00:09:49.000 Oh, okay.
00:09:51.000 To be clear, he doesn't like muzzle brakes.
00:09:54.000 It's a matter of preference.
00:09:56.000 He was like, I don't like muzzle brakes because of how loud it is.
00:09:57.000 He's like, it does make it easier.
00:09:58.000 He's like, it's not worth it.
00:10:00.000 So show us kind of the basic need-to-knows about firing a rifle.
00:10:05.000 Some tips, just like you did with the handgun.
00:10:06.000 Yep, sure.
00:10:07.000 So with an AR-15, it's not as applicable seated, but what you want to do is set your length of pull.
00:10:16.000 Most AR-15s are going to have an adjustable buttstock.
00:10:19.000 How it actually articulates is going to vary on the brand, but this one's a Mission First Tactical and you just push this little button.
00:10:25.000 and you can set it up to whatever length you want. I'm six feet tall so for me when I'm seated or
00:10:31.000 prone I tend to like it about this length but some folks are a little bit smaller will want to put it
00:10:36.000 down just just so it's comfortable. The military typically even still teaches that you want your
00:10:44.000 nose to be close to the charging handle.
00:10:47.000 That's just for consistency.
00:10:48.000 So that's for having a consistent sight picture when you look downrange.
00:10:52.000 If you notice with sights, like this one has backup iron sights, if you had your iron sights up and you move your head around, it'll look like where you're shooting moves.
00:11:00.000 So they want your point where you actually mount the rifle on your face to be consistent.
00:11:05.000 That's why they teach it.
00:11:07.000 I'm not sure that's necessary.
00:11:08.000 Just throwing that out there because I know someone's saying it in the comments.
00:11:14.000 So, where you actually want to place your hand, obviously this one we have a light which is going to drive that to some extent, but seated, honestly you just want it wherever it's the most comfortable and you can get the most stable.
00:11:27.000 Some of you are shorter, might have to come back here.
00:11:29.000 Some of you are real tall, may have to go out here to this grip that we have.
00:11:33.000 One thing you will see, it's a leftover from the 80s military training, is a lot of folks
00:11:38.000 will grip right here.
00:11:39.000 I don't recommend doing that.
00:11:40.000 Number one, you don't get any stability and additionally it can cause malfunctions if
00:11:45.000 you actually had one of these, if you had one of those, which this gun doesn't.
00:11:50.000 But yeah, that's pretty much it.
00:11:52.000 And the key here is, unlike with handguns where you have to stabilize the gun while
00:11:56.000 you're shooting it, essentially if you're at a seated position like this, you just want
00:12:00.000 to mount the gun to the table, i.e. press it in, so that way you get the added stability
00:12:05.000 that you get.
00:12:06.000 So with that, loading it is pretty simple.
00:12:09.000 We have this locked back, but if it wasn't, again we're just going to push this button
00:12:12.000 right here, pull our charging handle back.
00:12:15.000 At this point, take our magazine, bullets downrange.
00:12:20.000 At this point we can either charge the charging handle, just like the pistols we talked about, or we can just hit this button and now the rifle is loaded.
00:12:20.000 Set it in.
00:12:29.000 And just, I'll take a few shots to show that, but, so, at this point.
00:12:32.000 Got a bunch of ears on.
00:12:34.000 And, uh, safety.
00:12:36.000 We're just going to rotate it down to fire like we talked about.
00:12:39.000 This one is ambidextrous.
00:12:40.000 Are those your daughters?
00:12:42.000 They don't fit.
00:12:45.000 Yeah, I'm the one who beat this.
00:12:46.000 Look at this!
00:12:46.000 You think I picked this?
00:12:47.000 Look at this!
00:12:47.000 There's an intern getting fired.
00:12:49.000 Okay.
00:12:50.000 So, what I mean by that, in terms of getting on the table, is physically get on the table.
00:12:55.000 And you're aiming at 100 yards?
00:12:57.000 Yeah.
00:12:57.000 Okay.
00:12:57.000 The same would be true if you were firing from the prone, i.e.
00:13:00.000 laying on the ground position.
00:13:01.000 Okay.
00:13:02.000 With older magazines that in theory could cause malfunction, but if you have modern
00:13:07.000 AR-15 magazines it will not.
00:13:08.000 And the reason for that is it's just changing the angle of feed.
00:13:12.000 Modern magazines account for that, so it's not an issue.
00:13:14.000 So get in there and use it as a point of contact.
00:13:17.000 Alright, so again, to fire we're just going to push the safety down.
00:13:21.000 No, he's 64!
00:13:23.000 And at this point, you want the rifle to be somewhere in your shoulder pocket.
00:13:29.000 Some instructors will teach more center line.
00:13:31.000 Some will teach a little bit in the meat of your shoulder.
00:13:35.000 With an AR-15, I generally don't think it really matters.
00:13:37.000 There's so little recoil.
00:13:40.000 And that's really it.
00:13:48.000 That is the loading, operation, etc.
00:13:51.000 of an AR-15.
00:13:54.000 Well, since Mr. Gear made it look so easy at 100 yards... Ears!
00:14:01.000 Ears!
00:14:02.000 Our lovely senior producer, Nancy, just came in, but she doesn't have ears.
00:14:07.000 I don't want her to be deaf.
00:14:09.000 She'll be saying, that was great, can we do another take?
00:14:09.000 She's got ears then.
00:14:13.000 Alright, let's see if Mr. Guns and Gears is going to make us all look like hacks, which
00:14:17.000 we are.
00:14:18.000 Well, I think we'll just assume that the rest of the magazine was going to go that way.
00:14:29.000 Oh, come on!
00:14:30.000 You know, I just don't want to wear it out before you guys get to it.
00:14:35.000 Yeah, that's fair.
00:14:36.000 I appreciate that.
00:14:37.000 It's very patriotic.
00:14:38.000 I mean, most of the work was done by earth.
00:14:41.000 Again, we're sitting, so it's not very hard.
00:14:43.000 I think it'll be very different from what we stand.
00:14:44.000 But Gerald, you have fired an AR-15, I believe Gerald has.
00:14:47.000 Yeah, it's been, I think, quite a while.
00:14:49.000 I don't even remember.
00:14:51.000 But I think it was at range up north one time.
00:14:53.000 Oh that's right, we did.
00:14:54.000 Really quickly, again these come from Watchtower.
00:14:56.000 This is kind of a specialized, obviously it looks really cool, American flag.
00:15:00.000 It's very patriotic.
00:15:02.000 But this is meant for people who kind of really like tricking out their ARs and sometimes you run into compatibility issues where it's a little more finicky with magazines.
00:15:11.000 This is their base model here that they sent to us from Watchtower, an American firearms manufacturer.
00:15:16.000 Everything here in the USA and they really do have a great mission statement.
00:15:20.000 A reason for founding the company, veteran-owned, and not just, by the way, veteran-owned, but people who are aggressively pro-Second Amendment, and you have to worry about them.
00:15:29.000 That's not always the case.
00:15:30.000 That's for sure.
00:15:31.000 No, I don't, it's just for men.
00:15:34.000 Alright, this one, let's see, because, by the way, I should say that Mr. Gunslinger
00:15:38.000 spent some time getting the red dot on this adjusted, so if I miss, it's because he's
00:15:46.000 no jeweler.
00:15:56.000 Now you should know, when it comes to shooting, I suck.
00:16:01.000 So there's a reason that a lot of people would pick an AR-15.
00:16:05.000 It's very, very easy to shoot.
00:16:08.000 And we'll have, Gerald, I'm sure we'll have pointers, but like you said, it does seem, as far as from a defensive perspective, if you're sitting, It's pretty tough to screw up.
00:16:16.000 It is.
00:16:17.000 Especially if you have an optic on there.
00:16:19.000 It definitely makes it easy.
00:16:19.000 Yeah.
00:16:20.000 It's just, put the dot on it, press the trigger.
00:16:22.000 Well, and the trigger on that thing is, again, really easy.
00:16:25.000 Alright, Gerald, we'll do musical chairs.
00:16:26.000 Do you have your eye protection?
00:16:28.000 Oh, you've got it?
00:16:28.000 I've got it.
00:16:29.000 Okay.
00:16:29.000 You've got your normal glasses.
00:16:30.000 They're built in.
00:16:31.000 I keep them.
00:16:33.000 There's a story behind those comfortable glasses.
00:16:34.000 He's married now.
00:16:35.000 Alright, so, you're freakishly tall, so.
00:16:39.000 You might want to extend that buttstock all the way out.
00:16:39.000 A little bit.
00:16:41.000 I don't think it's quite all the way.
00:16:44.000 So what we're going to do is pull up, yep.
00:16:45.000 Oh no, it is all the way.
00:16:47.000 Alright, well that's good, that's where you want to be.
00:16:49.000 Basically you're going to want to orient the gun towards the target.
00:16:54.000 Did you just say aim at the target?
00:16:55.000 I did, but I tried to say it in a nice way.
00:16:57.000 Yeah, you tried to say it in a way that didn't make me feel.
00:17:01.000 So, and then basically get the buttstock in your shoulder, somewhere in this region.
00:17:06.000 Lean into it, so that way it stabilizes it.
00:17:08.000 Okay.
00:17:08.000 And then you just have to... Put the dot on there and pull the trigger?
00:17:11.000 Yep.
00:17:12.000 Yes.
00:17:12.000 You say aim that way?
00:17:13.000 Okay.
00:17:13.000 Yes.
00:17:13.000 Orient was my word.
00:17:15.000 Can I take just a second to say, this is nice.
00:17:19.000 This is nice.
00:17:19.000 This is nice.
00:17:20.000 Very nice.
00:17:21.000 That's nice.
00:17:22.000 It's good to be with you all.
00:17:23.000 I've enjoyed your cup.
00:17:24.000 Yes, sir.
00:17:25.000 Yes, that-a-way.
00:17:27.000 I feel like I have to really lean down into this thing.
00:17:30.000 Yeah, it's cozy and tall.
00:17:31.000 Well, yeah, because you're a giant.
00:17:33.000 Alright, shut up!
00:17:38.000 You know what helps?
00:17:39.000 Safety.
00:17:40.000 I was seeing if he knew and he didn't say anything about it.
00:17:40.000 Safety first.
00:17:43.000 Well, we found out it works.
00:17:44.000 We're just testing it.
00:17:45.000 Part of the review process I got it!
00:17:54.000 I got four!
00:17:57.000 You only did three.
00:17:58.000 Put your finger still on the trigger, dummy.
00:17:59.000 It's not.
00:18:00.000 It's not.
00:18:00.000 And the gun's pointed that way.
00:18:01.000 Well, yeah, but you know what?
00:18:03.000 That's where old Susie Range hangs out.
00:18:06.000 So, we're safe.
00:18:08.000 Let's, obviously, if he can do it four times in a row, we need to do something standing.
00:18:11.000 Oh, come on.
00:18:12.000 Don't make it harder on me.
00:18:14.000 It doesn't mean anything.
00:18:15.000 So let's time warp and let's go to stay and we're going to learn some real techniques.
00:18:19.000 Zoom jump, okay.
00:18:26.000 So now we're standing, which is... Did you have that show on the stage, Zoom?
00:18:33.000 No, no.
00:18:33.000 No, okay, that was a Canadian thing.
00:18:35.000 All right.
00:18:36.000 So going over... Never mind.
00:18:36.000 All right.
00:18:38.000 Going over firing the AR-15 standing, just like I talked about with the stock, you want to adjust it to you.
00:18:44.000 This is more applicable standing than it is from a bench.
00:18:48.000 So kind of a rule of thumb, if you will, is you want it to be about the length When you grip it to where your elbow joint is and then adjust from there.
00:18:59.000 So that's like the starting point.
00:19:00.000 Then move it in or out depending on what you like and how it feels to you.
00:19:05.000 So again, like we talked about, you want your stock to be somewhere in this area.
00:19:10.000 The proponents of keeping it more center line say that it's going to help with recoil mitigation, which Might be true.
00:19:18.000 But some folks who want it... It's kind of hard to tell because there's not much recoil.
00:19:22.000 Exactly.
00:19:23.000 And so, when it's a little bit more on the outside, people who have more of a bladed stance will prefer that.
00:19:30.000 Are there certain set points, like for people who are, you know, like, okay, your cheek should be here.
00:19:30.000 Whichever one you have.
00:19:36.000 If it just kind of gives them something that's almost, you know, like clockwork that they can do every time.
00:19:41.000 Yeah.
00:19:41.000 Right.
00:19:43.000 When you have your rifle set up for home defense or whatever the case may be, like ready to go, you'll have the stock already in that position.
00:19:48.000 When you pick it up, it'll just naturally go there.
00:19:51.000 So, one thing that... And you want your cheek, you're saying, is this right along here?
00:19:54.000 Yep, that's where I was going to go.
00:19:55.000 One thing that new shooters... I hear maybe part of it, so I don't even know if I'm asking questions that you've already answered.
00:20:01.000 You've been very patient with us plebes.
00:20:01.000 It's all good.
00:20:03.000 So, one thing that a lot of new AR shooters will do is they'll put it like this, and then you'll see them craning their neck down.
00:20:09.000 What you want is it's just like martial arts.
00:20:11.000 So, if you're standing shooting, you want to be able to move and be athletic, essentially, because that might be required of you.
00:20:19.000 So, what you really want with an AR, most of your stocks are all a little bit different.
00:20:22.000 Like, for example, this one.
00:20:25.000 The reason that curve is there is actually for what I'm about to say.
00:20:28.000 So the reason that curve is there is so it fits better when it's high up.
00:20:32.000 And so when you want to bring your rifle up, you want to minimize how much you have to move your head.
00:20:38.000 You're going to have to move it somewhat with most optics.
00:20:42.000 But you want to minimize it and have it be as natural of a position as possible.
00:20:46.000 Like that.
00:20:47.000 There are different optics that are different heights, so if you're uncomfortable with the way it is, you can change that.
00:20:53.000 And then with your non-dominant hand, there's different schools of thoughts on this, similar to like we talked about with pistols in terms of being all the way out or being a little bit bent.
00:21:03.000 I personally like to be slightly bent, so my arm's going to be somewhat like that.
00:21:07.000 So it's more important than when you're sitting?
00:21:10.000 100%.
00:21:10.000 Because what you're doing is you're using that hand to pull the rifle into your shoulder.
00:21:16.000 This hand is doing virtually nothing in terms of Controlling recoil.
00:21:20.000 All you're doing with this hand is manipulating switches.
00:21:22.000 That's one of the reasons that sometimes learning on lever actions are valuable, because that, when you learn to do it, this, they taught me, this hand should basically, there should be no weight.
00:21:29.000 This is supporting it, so that's how you can operate it quickly.
00:21:32.000 And that kind of drilled it in my head, where sometimes with a semi-automatic, you don't really think of it, you're just thinking, just grab it and support it.
00:21:39.000 Yep, for sure.
00:21:40.000 And, uh, again, you want to pull it back into your shoulder to mitigate that recoil.
00:21:45.000 And, uh, other than that, I mean, that's pretty much it.
00:21:47.000 You'll see some competition shooters shoot like this, but the reason they shoot like that and they're not pulling it back so hard is because they don't care about follow-up shots.
00:21:55.000 Uh, whereas in the real world, you want to put as many shots on target as possible until whatever caused you to start shooting stops.
00:22:02.000 Right?
00:22:03.000 Right.
00:22:03.000 Does that make sense?
00:22:04.000 Alright, so essentially it's going to look something like this.
00:22:04.000 Makes sense, yeah.
00:22:11.000 That's it.
00:22:14.000 So that was three right there.
00:22:15.000 That was at 100?
00:22:16.000 Yep.
00:22:16.000 Did you hit all three?
00:22:17.000 I don't know.
00:22:18.000 I haven't seen the replay.
00:22:19.000 Yeah, he did.
00:22:21.000 He did.
00:22:22.000 Let's just assume he did.
00:22:23.000 Alright, let me try.
00:22:24.000 I'll try it with this one just because, I mean, it's gun-weak, so why not use a Patriotica fire?
00:22:31.000 So, uh, does that seem... that's too much... too long of a length of pull.
00:22:34.000 Uh, so... This is... oh, this is different.
00:22:36.000 It's a little trickier.
00:22:38.000 Some people prefer a more bladed stance, like this.
00:22:40.000 Some people prefer to be more squared up.
00:22:43.000 That comes from the Global War on Terrorism days when we, as soldiers, started training with body armor.
00:22:48.000 So folks who were wearing body armor started shooting more squared up to get the plates exposed.
00:22:54.000 It's kind of a preference thing.
00:22:55.000 I really don't think one is right or wrong.
00:22:57.000 Does that seem about right?
00:22:59.000 Yep.
00:22:59.000 You're probably going to want to be a little bit higher.
00:23:03.000 That feels like it's not bracing against my shoulder at that point.
00:23:06.000 Nope, it's not.
00:23:07.000 So one thing, if you could lower that real quick, Stephen, is that...
00:23:12.000 Oh, you want me to pick it up again?
00:23:15.000 Okay.
00:23:16.000 Alright, sorry.
00:23:17.000 Alright, like you're going to shoot it?
00:23:18.000 Yep.
00:23:19.000 Okay.
00:23:20.000 Now, I've never held this out further like this, so this is kind of new to me.
00:23:23.000 I usually have always held it here.
00:23:28.000 You really want to have that higher up so that way you're not craning your neck because that's what you're starting to do.
00:23:36.000 The way to think of it is you want to kind of like fall into the rifle.
00:23:39.000 So instead of being like this, if you just take a natural, again like we talked about.
00:23:43.000 Oh, okay.
00:23:44.000 So I almost want to feel it more in the crease of where my chest meets my shoulder.
00:23:47.000 Correct.
00:23:48.000 What you just did, that motion is what you want to do.
00:23:48.000 Okay.
00:23:50.000 So kind of almost think like a prong a little bit.
00:23:52.000 Yes.
00:23:52.000 Correct.
00:23:52.000 Okay.
00:23:53.000 Well, it's actually very similar to, you know, they would talk about in boxing where, you know, a lot of guys, they square up.
00:23:58.000 You actually kind of want to roll your shoulders in to protect your chin.
00:24:01.000 Right.
00:24:01.000 Okay.
00:24:02.000 That actually helps a lot because I was thinking I wanted it up against... Yep.
00:24:04.000 So, you're going to come up and basically just kind of naturally go into it.
00:24:09.000 There you go.
00:24:09.000 Okay.
00:24:10.000 Yep.
00:24:10.000 Much better.
00:24:11.000 What I'm seeing now is much better.
00:24:11.000 Alright.
00:24:12.000 I just stepped on a...
00:24:14.000 A little 50 cal chill?
00:24:16.000 Just a tip too, if you're starting out shooting and you don't already have bad habits, keep your elbow in.
00:24:22.000 That's just a good thing.
00:24:22.000 It's less to get shot.
00:24:24.000 In my elbow out?
00:24:26.000 In.
00:24:26.000 But was my elbow out?
00:24:27.000 It wasn't?
00:24:27.000 No.
00:24:28.000 No.
00:24:28.000 It was good.
00:24:29.000 So I did good then?
00:24:31.000 Yes.
00:24:32.000 I just assumed it was criticism, but I'm used to it.
00:24:34.000 Just making a point.
00:24:35.000 Alright, so that seems about right.
00:24:37.000 Okay.
00:24:41.000 Did that hit?
00:24:43.000 That's it?
00:24:44.000 Yep.
00:24:45.000 Huh.
00:24:46.000 Three out of four.
00:24:55.000 Three out of four.
00:24:56.000 His percentage is better than yours.
00:24:57.000 It's true.
00:24:59.000 We have to see the footage, to be clear.
00:25:01.000 So that wasn't bad.
00:25:02.000 Obviously I wouldn't be able to do fast follow-up shots because I don't have nearly the experience, but that makes a huge difference.
00:25:07.000 Now I do wonder if I got used to this, that that might make more sense.
00:25:12.000 It's just very foreign to me going out, which I know a lot of people know this is kind of the trend to go out way, way further.
00:25:18.000 For sure.
00:25:20.000 You definitely are, if you do it correctly, you're more stable with your hand out further because all of your movements are a little bit more precise on the end.
00:25:29.000 It's just physics.
00:25:30.000 But you will fatigue quickly, which is why you'll see it a lot in the competition world where they're running a stage for 20 seconds and it doesn't matter.
00:25:38.000 You're not going to see a Marine in a firefight in the real world doing that.
00:25:43.000 Right.
00:25:43.000 I was going to say.
00:25:44.000 All right, Gerald, you want to have a go?
00:25:44.000 OK.
00:25:46.000 Yeah, I'll hit with this one here.
00:25:47.000 You want to do it with that one?
00:25:48.000 OK.
00:25:50.000 And again, we are fortunate to be able to shoot pretty highly engineered rifles that do a lot of the work.
00:25:57.000 Now see, for him, that's not even far, because he has the wingspan of an albatross.
00:26:01.000 The wandering albatross has the longest wingspan of any bird alive today.
00:26:07.000 I gotta see where the dot, did we turn the dot off on this?
00:26:10.000 Nope, it's on.
00:26:13.000 Wait, can you not see the dot because you're colorblind?
00:26:15.000 I'm not even joking.
00:26:16.000 Oh, there it is.
00:26:16.000 Yeah, I can see it.
00:26:17.000 I don't know how that worked.
00:26:19.000 Ah, I did it again.
00:26:20.000 You let me do it too, Mike.
00:26:22.000 It's okay, we won.
00:26:23.000 That's enough.
00:26:30.000 That's enough.
00:26:31.000 Finger out the trigger.
00:26:32.000 He's shot enough.
00:26:35.000 Finger out the trigger.
00:26:36.000 Mike's like, you're doing the trigger thing wrong.
00:26:39.000 He picks something up and he's like, I don't know.
00:26:40.000 He's like, am I doing it right?
00:26:42.000 Ding!
00:26:42.000 Ding!
00:26:44.000 I don't know.
00:26:44.000 Is that okay?
00:26:45.000 Runs a 40.
00:26:46.000 Like, well, is Lunder 5 good?
00:26:50.000 It's frustrating.
00:26:51.000 He's frustratingly gifted.
00:26:53.000 Sorry.
00:26:55.000 No, that was good.
00:26:55.000 It's not my fault.
00:26:57.000 Any tips that we're doing wrong that we need to fix?
00:26:59.000 Gerald was a little bit high on it, but...
00:27:02.000 That's just because you're new to it.
00:27:02.000 Yeah.
00:27:03.000 When you say high on it, tell me what you mean.
00:27:05.000 Standing very vertical.
00:27:06.000 Oh, okay, so I didn't lean in like you were talking about.
00:27:08.000 Just more stable, because think about it.
00:27:10.000 Put your hands like this.
00:27:11.000 So, what you're trying to do, right, is you're trying to stop that force.
00:27:14.000 Right, because it's moving me back, but if I lean into it... Correct.
00:27:17.000 Okay, there we go.
00:27:18.000 That's all you're trying to do.
00:27:18.000 Yeah, I keep dropping.
00:27:20.000 Okay, cool.
00:27:21.000 Awesome.
00:27:22.000 That was better than I thought.
00:27:23.000 Some basic tips.
00:27:24.000 I guess we do still have some other long guns here.
00:27:26.000 Yeah.
00:27:27.000 I mean, I think you guys probably know we've fired a pump shotgun, but it probably would be pretty cool for people to see this Benelli at work.
00:27:33.000 It's a semi-automatic shotgun.
00:27:35.000 We have some of these little terrorists set up here.
00:27:38.000 So let's do that.
00:27:39.000 MTV!
00:27:42.000 Zoom jump!
00:27:43.000 I just forgot you guys don't have zoom.
00:27:45.000 So shotguns, really quickly, pretty self-explanatory.
00:27:47.000 Not all too different from rifles, except you'll be using them at closer range.
00:27:51.000 Right.
00:27:52.000 For sure.
00:27:52.000 And same thing in terms of increased points of contact stability that you get versus a pistol.
00:27:56.000 Same advantages.
00:27:57.000 We'll go through some of the myths when we do that, that the idea that you just aim in the general direction.
00:28:01.000 No, there is a spread, but it's not necessarily what you've been told.
00:28:05.000 This is a classic Remington pump-action shotgun. 870.
00:28:08.000 And this is a Benelli semi-automatic shotgun.
00:28:09.000 This is one thing if you understand kinetic energy.
00:28:11.000 The kick in this is substantially more than this.
00:28:14.000 Because a part of that energy is being used to cycle the next round.
00:28:18.000 Whereas this is just basically in a closed chamber going off in your shoulder.
00:28:23.000 Yeah, that's exactly what it is.
00:28:25.000 It's the least pleasant with buckshot.
00:28:27.000 For sure.
00:28:28.000 It's no joke.
00:28:28.000 Do you want to take a shot of that first?
00:28:30.000 And so both of these are loaded with full power buck.
00:28:30.000 Yeah.
00:28:33.000 Yeah.
00:28:33.000 And then we'll use the Benelli and show Gerald.
00:28:40.000 All right.
00:28:41.000 You really had to lean into that a little bit, right?
00:28:43.000 You want to.
00:28:44.000 Yeah, yeah.
00:28:45.000 If you don't, you'll find out why.
00:28:46.000 We have a medic on site.
00:28:49.000 You guys ready?
00:28:51.000 Yep.
00:28:52.000 Range is hot.
00:28:55.000 Boom!
00:28:57.000 That really is not a lot of kick.
00:28:58.000 No, it's not.
00:28:59.000 For a shotgun.
00:28:59.000 That's why I recommend it.
00:29:01.000 Let's, uh, you know what?
00:29:04.000 Since this is Gerald's first time, let's really quickly, let's put up all those targets and just have Gerald blow them all away.
00:29:09.000 Sounds good.
00:29:10.000 Oh jeez.
00:29:11.000 Hold right here.
00:29:12.000 The safety right here?
00:29:13.000 So it's safety, push across.
00:29:15.000 So that's good now?
00:29:16.000 No.
00:29:17.000 Okay, got it.
00:29:17.000 Alright.
00:29:17.000 Sorry, Jeff.
00:29:18.000 That's years in.
00:29:19.000 Ah!
00:29:20.000 No!
00:29:20.000 They're gonna die!
00:29:20.000 No!
00:29:20.000 Ah!
00:29:22.000 Yeah, right there.
00:29:24.000 That was- That wing it!
00:29:31.000 Honestly, out of everything today, that was surprisingly inaccurate for a shotgun.
00:29:34.000 I'm kind of amazed you missed it.
00:29:36.000 Well, I didn't want to lean into it.
00:29:37.000 I was afraid.
00:29:38.000 Let's put that away.
00:29:40.000 I want another shot.
00:29:41.000 Alright.
00:29:41.000 I want another shot with this thing.
00:29:42.000 I can do better!
00:29:43.000 We weren't even supposed to be filming this one just so we got rid of the target before it, but...
00:29:51.000 Boom, baby!
00:29:53.000 Hold on.
00:29:54.000 You're supposed to go outside and shoot it in the air, according to Joe Biden.
00:29:57.000 That's a double-barreled shotgun.
00:29:58.000 Oh, double-barreled.
00:29:59.000 Okay, got it.
00:30:00.000 He put that double-barreled shotgun and fired two blasts outside the house.
00:30:06.000 Well, we were going to have Gerald do this, but since he missed... I was worried about my shoulder.
00:30:13.000 We'll talk about, you know, fast for a shotgun, four targets.
00:30:16.000 This is why you hear people talk about this thing so much.
00:30:20.000 Nice.
00:30:24.000 Nice.
00:30:28.000 It's kind of silly.
00:30:29.000 It is.
00:30:30.000 It is.
00:30:31.000 It's kind of like cheat codes.
00:30:33.000 But you have to keep in mind too, that versus the pump shotgun, huge price difference, right?
00:30:37.000 So huge barrier to entry to getting into it.
00:30:39.000 Yeah, no, it's not great if you're one of the pores.
00:30:41.000 Ha ha ha.
00:30:43.000 That's nice.
00:30:53.000 I gotta get one of these.
00:30:54.000 Oh, the barrel's hot!
00:30:55.000 Don't touch the barrel!
00:30:55.000 Don't touch the barrel.
00:30:57.000 That finger hurts!
00:30:58.000 I had Cruis'n McBacon on that barrel.
00:31:00.000 What?
00:31:01.000 It's okay.
00:31:02.000 Took a steak on that barrel?
00:31:03.000 Wow.
00:31:04.000 That was nice.
00:31:06.000 The vanilla's nice.
00:31:07.000 Alright.
00:31:08.000 If you can afford one of these, I highly recommend it.
00:31:11.000 Now the funnest part, cleaning!
00:31:15.000 No!
00:31:15.000 See, that's the magic of cameras.
00:31:17.000 And by the way, if you feel that this has enlightened you, or served you in any way, hit the like button, subscribe, and of course go check out Mr. Guns and Gear channel.
00:31:25.000 Thank you to Watchtower for providing these firearms.
00:31:28.000 The one we're most excited about is dispelling a lot of those gun myths.
00:31:32.000 Things like the .22 bouncing around in the body cavity.
00:31:35.000 Things like the firearms were only meant for muskets.
00:31:39.000 The Second Amendment.
00:31:40.000 The militia.
00:31:42.000 You don't need that kind of capacity.
00:31:43.000 All of those will be covered in another video.
00:31:45.000 Just click one of those links.
00:31:46.000 Okay, this is the least fun part for most people.
00:31:49.000 And they're intimidating with an AR because there are more moving parts, right, than a handle.
00:31:52.000 Sure, there are.
00:31:52.000 It's bigger, too.
00:31:53.000 It's scary.
00:31:54.000 Does it need to be that hard to clean?
00:31:55.000 No.
00:31:56.000 There's some intricacies to it.
00:31:58.000 First thing we're going to want to do, of course, is verify that it's clear.
00:32:00.000 This one already is, but if not, you just pull the charging handle back to verify it's clear.
00:32:04.000 At this point, we're going to pull it back and release, or...
00:32:07.000 Hit our bolt release to send it home, and we're going to push out the pins.
00:32:10.000 So there's two pins on an AR-15, one here at the rear, one up front.
00:32:15.000 On a new gun like this, it can be tight.
00:32:17.000 Well, so Watchtower said, hey, these things are very, very tight, so you may need a little help.
00:32:21.000 That's not normal.
00:32:22.000 That's one thing also, too, people may need to know, a lot of times, sometimes guns that are meant for precision shooting, they have tighter tolerances, right, because they want to be precision instruments as opposed to That's one of the myths we'll sort of get to.
00:32:34.000 Mill specs.
00:32:35.000 Sometimes they want looser tolerance that function, right, with dirt, with crap in it, but they may not be as precise.
00:32:41.000 That's true.
00:32:42.000 So at this point you can either swing your lower down... That is tight.
00:32:46.000 They're not kidding.
00:32:47.000 This is the first day we've used this.
00:32:49.000 He literally said, you're going to have to do something to get it out.
00:32:51.000 I didn't tell him beforehand because I just wanted to mess with him, but... We wanted you to realize that Mr. Guns and Gears is a fraud.
00:32:57.000 He doesn't know how to do it.
00:33:00.000 AR-15.
00:33:00.000 That is tight.
00:33:01.000 We're going to hold this over his head for a little while and be like, you couldn't even get the pins out.
00:33:04.000 He's crinkling his little pink panties.
00:33:05.000 Come on, Mike.
00:33:06.000 No.
00:33:07.000 It's odd.
00:33:09.000 This is a brand new firearm.
00:33:13.000 30 minutes later.
00:33:14.000 We brought in a real gun pro.
00:33:14.000 Don't worry.
00:33:15.000 He can stand in.
00:33:18.000 It's Stanley Tucci.
00:33:19.000 Oh yeah, that doesn't make sense.
00:33:21.000 In all seriousness, if you actually have a tight lower like that, sometimes if you free up the front pin here, it will loosen the rear one, which is exactly what I just did.
00:33:29.000 So, for normal maintenance, that's probably all you need to do for your lower receiver.
00:33:33.000 And then at this point you're going to pull your charging handle.
00:33:35.000 This one's ambidextrous.
00:33:37.000 And we're going to pull our bolt carrier group out, which is this piece right here.
00:33:40.000 And then pull our charging handle out.
00:33:41.000 And at this point, for normal maintenance, all you need to do is take apart the bolt and that is it.
00:33:47.000 Okay, so let me kind of, here, I'll move this so it's not in the way.
00:33:50.000 It's very cool.
00:33:53.000 I feel like it's a gun Kid Rock would have.
00:33:56.000 Yes, for a music video.
00:33:57.000 Yes, exactly.
00:33:58.000 But it is cool.
00:34:00.000 Very cool.
00:34:00.000 It camouflages, I guess, if you are at a Trump rally.
00:34:05.000 So this component, these are the main components.
00:34:09.000 Lower receiver, upper receiver.
00:34:11.000 This is the bolt charging handle for the bolt carrier.
00:34:14.000 Bolt carrier group.
00:34:15.000 Okay.
00:34:15.000 We'll carry a group.
00:34:16.000 So I just pulled this little pin out.
00:34:17.000 I'm not sure if the camera caught it, but this is our firing pin, retainer pin.
00:34:22.000 Then you're just going to tip it up like that.
00:34:24.000 Firing pin comes out.
00:34:25.000 We're going to move our bolt to the rear until it's at the back of this cam track right here.
00:34:29.000 And at this point, you can rotate it 90 degrees like that.
00:34:34.000 Cam pin will come out.
00:34:35.000 and our bolt is assembled.
00:34:37.000 Disassembled, excuse me.
00:34:38.000 For normal maintenance, this is as far as you're gonna take it down.
00:34:40.000 You can obviously take these down much further, but day-to-day maintenance, don't need to.
00:34:44.000 It's fine.
00:34:45.000 So what we'll do is probably same thing with the handguns.
00:34:47.000 I'm assuming spray it all down.
00:34:48.000 Yep.
00:34:49.000 Brush the carbon.
00:34:49.000 For sure.
00:34:50.000 If you have an old lady's tank top.
00:34:52.000 And we're also gonna...
00:34:54.000 Bore snake.
00:34:54.000 Bore snake it.
00:34:55.000 You could use patches as well.
00:34:56.000 If you want to, spray some CLP in the bore before you can, before you do so, rather.
00:35:03.000 Okay.
00:35:03.000 So if you want to spray it down while the bore snake goes down, feel free to do so.
00:35:07.000 And can I ask you something?
00:35:08.000 Because if you go online...
00:35:09.000 And you know this, there will be people saying, run ARs dry.
00:35:12.000 Some people saying run them wet.
00:35:13.000 Some people saying just a tiny amount.
00:35:16.000 There are different camps.
00:35:17.000 What is sort of correct based on the actual data?
00:35:19.000 Because there's a lot of data out there now.
00:35:21.000 There's a ton of data.
00:35:22.000 DOD has done a lot of testing on it.
00:35:24.000 It's all public.
00:35:25.000 You can look it up.
00:35:26.000 In virtually all conditions, it's going to run better if you have it on the wet side.
00:35:31.000 Okay.
00:35:32.000 So a lot of people think it'll attract dirt with the oil and it'll stay in there, which is true, but the oil suspends it and it still works fine.
00:35:39.000 Okay.
00:35:40.000 So we do that and then I would assume spray all these components.
00:35:43.000 Yep, correct.
00:35:44.000 And the lower receiver and the upper receiver, just right on in there.
00:35:48.000 Get rid of the excess.
00:35:49.000 Yep.
00:35:49.000 And we're going to wipe it down.
00:35:50.000 And basically you're just going to spray in a trigger group there.
00:35:52.000 Mm-hmm and wipe it all down.
00:35:55.000 Additionally in the AR-15 it has what's called a start chamber which is this portion right here and we're gonna want to make sure that we get into there with some sort of cloth.
00:36:05.000 Is that because you get a lot of buildup specifically there?
00:36:07.000 Yes, the way the AR-15 works, that spot gets very, very dirty and it's also right where your rounds are going into the chamber, so you kind of want that to be clean.
00:36:15.000 And you said that with an AR-15, we didn't necessarily need this with the handgun, but you do recommend maybe a couple drops of oil, a thinner coating oil?
00:36:24.000 Yes, that's for sure.
00:36:26.000 Petroleum based lubricant now on the bolt here.
00:36:29.000 Same thing I just sprayed it with that CLP and make sure you want to get a bolt face as well.
00:36:34.000 The reason is that right there is where the cartridge is going to lock onto the rim and you want that to get a good purchase so that way you can pull it out reliably.
00:36:44.000 And then here on the bolt carrier group, same thing, we're going to spray in there because that is where this bolt is moving back and forth inside there.
00:36:50.000 Sort of like a piston engine if you guys are familiar with that.
00:36:53.000 Spray down the outside of it.
00:36:54.000 And how often would you need to clean and lubricate an AR-15?
00:36:56.000 You read my mind, literally.
00:36:59.000 Not very often is the answer to that.
00:37:01.000 Realistically, if you have a good AR-15, Easily, a thousand rounds should be able to run reliably, provided it's lubricated.
00:37:09.000 If you add a suppressor, it speeds that up.
00:37:11.000 You have to clean it a little bit more.
00:37:13.000 But what I would recommend is if you're using it as a defensive gun or a hunting gun, something that you want to depend on, I would clean it after each use.
00:37:22.000 Okay.
00:37:22.000 If you're going to actually depend on it.
00:37:23.000 Like a basic clean?
00:37:24.000 Correct.
00:37:24.000 Okay.
00:37:25.000 That's what I do.
00:37:25.000 So I'm just going through now and wiping everything up.
00:37:28.000 And then can you do us a favor and put it back together so people see the order and we can get those right in different close ups because I know with some people these little, it can be intimidating because there's some little tiny pieces but once you know it, it really does become second nature.
00:37:39.000 Yep, for sure.
00:37:40.000 Alright, so with that.
00:37:41.000 And are you able to do this wrong?
00:37:42.000 Like that, when I was, we were talking about the handguns when I was practicing on the PPS after we finished, I just wanted to do it.
00:37:48.000 I had this stupid thought in my head, I was like, what if I do it wrong?
00:37:50.000 I don't know if it's even possible.
00:37:52.000 Are you able to do this wrong?
00:37:53.000 The answer is yes.
00:37:55.000 The general human being out there doing this.
00:37:57.000 Myself as well.
00:37:59.000 So, on most of your AR-15s, if they're mil-spec, i.e.
00:38:02.000 compatible with All the other AR-15 parts?
00:38:05.000 No, you can't.
00:38:07.000 They kind of go one way to make everything fit correctly.
00:38:10.000 There are some that have bolts that can be put in backwards, but that's not normal.
00:38:15.000 Like 99.9%?
00:38:16.000 No.
00:38:16.000 That's helpful to know because it makes it to where it's like, okay, I can't quite screw this up and then go out to the range and blammo.
00:38:23.000 That's also why these are so popular because there's so many aftermarket parts and accessories because it's relatively standardized.
00:38:29.000 You can make an AR-15 Into almost any kind of a firearm you want, depending on your chosen kind of mode of operation, I guess.
00:38:37.000 Yeah, for sure.
00:38:39.000 I'm going to use the gun cleaning lube on my forehead.
00:38:43.000 Right in your eyes.
00:38:43.000 Oh yeah, that's a good idea.
00:38:44.000 Get a little lead in there.
00:38:45.000 Alright, so what we're going to do is take our bolt, and you want your bolt to be, excuse me, the extractor, facing to the right, because that's how it goes here on our upper receiver.
00:38:54.000 And again, with a mil-spec one, you cannot do that backwards.
00:38:58.000 Okay.
00:38:59.000 Now this is... This is our can pen.
00:39:01.000 It can go in either way.
00:39:02.000 Okay.
00:39:04.000 And basically... That's the problem, right?
00:39:06.000 We need to clean it again!
00:39:07.000 Son of a gun!
00:39:08.000 These guns actually have it... I'll just use my forehead grease, right?
00:39:10.000 That's viscous.
00:39:11.000 That should work.
00:39:12.000 This bolt carrier group actually has a very special treating on it that makes it super slippery.
00:39:16.000 So that's not normal, but regardless... But that would be a good thing for operation.
00:39:20.000 He did talk to me about that.
00:39:21.000 Low friction.
00:39:22.000 Yep, 100%.
00:39:23.000 There's a lot of stuff that he told me that I did forget to tell you, Mike.
00:39:25.000 Watchtower?
00:39:26.000 Yeah, yeah, yeah, watchtower.
00:39:27.000 Because at the last minute, he brought this in, and I said, Gerald, can you handle this?
00:39:30.000 And you said yes.
00:39:31.000 What Gerald meant to say was no.
00:39:33.000 I don't own an AR-15, but yes, I will take care of this.
00:39:36.000 Please tell me all of the details.
00:39:38.000 And I said, Gerald, what did he tell you?
00:39:40.000 He said, ah, it works good.
00:39:41.000 Works good, looks nice.
00:39:42.000 Hey, it's going to be green.
00:39:43.000 So once you put your cam pin in, you have to push it forward and rotate it 90 degrees.
00:39:47.000 If you don't rotate it, you won't be able to get your firing pin in.
00:39:50.000 So your firing pin, pin goes down.
00:39:53.000 And just drops right in there like that.
00:39:54.000 Oh wow, that's a good... And then you're gonna take your retaining pin and push it across like so.
00:40:01.000 Now your bolt carrier group is good to go.
00:40:03.000 Can I just tell you one thing?
00:40:04.000 Because I know you're probably being very polite but confused.
00:40:06.000 He's colorblind.
00:40:07.000 He thinks this is green.
00:40:08.000 What is it?
00:40:10.000 It's tan.
00:40:11.000 This isn't really green.
00:40:11.000 I wouldn't... No, it's tan.
00:40:12.000 Yeah, it's tan.
00:40:13.000 Alright.
00:40:14.000 I was lied to!
00:40:15.000 You're open!
00:40:16.000 So provided you cleaned everything out of there, are we going to go over lubrication before we put it together?
00:40:21.000 Yeah, if there are specific parts.
00:40:22.000 Again, unlike with the handgun, if you go back, we showed you a basic way to do it with the CLP.
00:40:26.000 You don't really need to do an extra step if you're just looking to keep it functioning and reliable.
00:40:30.000 With an AR, it is recommended that you do use something like, is this, do we have hops number 9?
00:40:34.000 Yeah, hops 9.
00:40:35.000 It's a lubricating oil.
00:40:36.000 Anything petroleum-based should be good, generally speaking, but we're going to put it on our bolt here.
00:40:41.000 Probably should have done it before I did it, but if you didn't do it before you did it, like I just did, you can actually put it right down on the cam track and it'll do the exact same thing.
00:40:49.000 Just a drop?
00:40:50.000 Yep.
00:40:51.000 Tiny amount.
00:40:52.000 I mean you can put a little bit more and then also on the rails here, you can see on the bolt carrier grip there's rails, so that's what's actually making contact in the upper receiver.
00:41:01.000 And we don't need to worry about this being too wet?
00:41:04.000 No.
00:41:04.000 Because you know you will get people like, that's too wet.
00:41:07.000 Yes.
00:41:08.000 See the DoD data.
00:41:10.000 They spent millions of dollars to get it.
00:41:12.000 So just check it out.
00:41:13.000 What's the matter bro?
00:41:13.000 I've heard it on YouTube.
00:41:14.000 That's what they want you to do.
00:41:16.000 I mean rumble because that's where they get it.
00:41:17.000 And so on our charging handle there's a little nub right here and these two nubs on the side you want those to be lubricated.
00:41:24.000 And we're going to put it in.
00:41:25.000 There's a little groove in your upper receiver that these two pieces go in.
00:41:30.000 So you're going to put it in, go down like that, and then to put your bolt carrier group in, you want your bolt forward, all the way forward, because if it's not, it won't go in.
00:41:38.000 And we're going to align this gasket, which is this portion right here, with the groove in our charging handle.
00:41:45.000 That's it.
00:41:46.000 Send it home.
00:41:46.000 And at this point you're just going to attach your lower receiver.
00:41:48.000 Hopefully the pins are a little more friendly now.
00:41:52.000 Going back in might be easier.
00:41:54.000 Oh there we go.
00:41:55.000 That is tight.
00:41:57.000 And there you go.
00:41:57.000 Oh, here we go.
00:41:58.000 Look.
00:41:59.000 Gun is reassembled, ready to go.
00:42:00.000 Nice.
00:42:01.000 Awesome.
00:42:01.000 So there you go.
00:42:02.000 Look, hey, Gerald started shooting, AR-15, not nearly as intimidating as many people would think.
00:42:06.000 Loved it.
00:42:07.000 Hit subscribe, like.
00:42:08.000 We are very much enjoying Gun Week.
00:42:09.000 We're going to do the next installment, if you click ballistics.
00:42:12.000 Ballistics gelatin.
00:42:13.000 Into gel?
00:42:14.000 We spared no expense.
00:42:14.000 Yep.
00:42:15.000 It's been sitting out in the hot sun because you told me that makes it more clear.
00:42:17.000 It does.
00:42:18.000 A little bit of heat on the outside tarpons it up a little bit.
00:42:20.000 And then the ones that I am looking forward to the most is two installments of dispelling the most common myths.
00:42:25.000 One will be the installment's colliter- ah, colliterally.
00:42:28.000 Literally!
00:42:29.000 Culturally!
00:42:30.000 Collaterally is what I was talking about.
00:42:32.000 You know I just applied for a credit card.
00:42:34.000 Literally!
00:42:35.000 Historically!
00:42:36.000 Politically!
00:42:37.000 Right, culturally, those kinds of myths.
00:42:40.000 And then obviously since we have an expert, Mr. Guns and Gear, we'll go through some of the tactical myths with firearms.
00:42:44.000 Hopefully this helps you with some of these rungs on the ladder, and we'll see you out in the shooting range.
00:42:49.000 I probably won't be there, but they might be there.
00:42:51.000 We'll see.
00:42:52.000 And our thanks to the folks at the TDSA range in Ferris, Texas.
00:42:56.000 It was hot, but it was wonderful.
