In this episode, I speak with Gabriel Dance about the global epidemic of child sexual abuse. We discuss the misleading concept of child pornography, the failure of governments and tech companies to grapple with the problem, the tradeoff between online privacy and protecting children, the difficulty in assessing the scope of the problem and other tools, the ethics of encryption, sextortion, and other topics. Again, this episode is not a barrel of laughs, but it s an important conversation, and it s yet another PSA, so not paywalled. If you want to support the work I'm doing here, you can subscribe at makingsense.org. And now I bring you Gabriel Dance, who is the Deputy Investigations Editor at The New York Times. Before working at the Times, Gabriel helped launch the criminal justice news site The Marshall Project, where he focused on the death penalty and prison and policing. And before that, he was the Interactive Editor for The Guardian. Where he was part of the group of journalists who won the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the widespread surveillance by the NSA. And yet these phrases can conjure images for people that are not aware of what s really going on here. And yet they can remind people of things that don t really get it, because they don t know it. And that s not really what gets it there, right? Because they don't even get it. And that gets found out when they re found out by their 18th birthday, or when they get into the porn industry, or they re sent to one another. Or they get found out before their 19th birthday. Or they're found out or they get it by their 20th birthday and that gets it, or it gets it by another, or that gets out into the world, or by their or or so on or what gets out there. But then they get out into this category, or gets it or gets binned into this . But at the bottom of this category of porn, or but then they're actually getting it out by a binned by this category? And so on and so on, right on it? This is an episode that many of you will find difficult to listen to this episode. I think you have a moral responsibility to listen by The Making Sense Podcast. (Make Sense Podcast, by Sam Harris) I m going to make sense of it.
