00:00:00.320 CTV News just turned on the Canadian Prime Minister,
00:00:03.520 admitting that he failed to live up to one of his major campaign promises,
00:00:07.360 to lower the price of groceries.
00:00:09.020 Now, if you remember, Carney said that Canadians could judge him by the price of groceries.
00:00:13.220 Well, it's been a year, and Canadians are still starving.
00:00:16.780 Now, funny enough, this criticism isn't just coming from the Conservative Party,
00:00:20.320 it's also coming from his paid propagandist at CTV.
00:00:23.500 Let's take a listen.
00:00:24.600 Well, MPs have returned to Parliament after a six-week holiday break,
00:00:27.620 and on the first day back, the Liberal government unveiling a plan
00:00:30.880 aimed at helping Canadians cope with the high cost of groceries.
00:00:34.040 The Prime Minister announcing a boost to the GST rebate for around 12 million Canadians,
00:00:38.520 but the opposition says it doesn't do enough to tackle food insecurity.
00:00:42.660 CTV's Josh Marano joins us live in studio with the details on this, Josh.
00:00:46.220 Yeah, Patricia, the government is launching what it's calling
00:00:48.600 the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit,
00:00:51.240 claiming this will put more money into the pockets of Canadians who need it most,
00:00:54.800 but as food costs continue to rise, many are asking whether it goes far enough.
00:00:59.940 At Walmart, Amy Smerich is doing her grocery run and keeping a close eye on prices.
00:01:05.620 I used to, like, not have to think about it as much when I would go to get groceries,
00:01:10.400 so, like, I would be able to get the things that I wanted,
00:01:12.800 whereas now I have to look at the prices and compare things.
00:01:15.820 Now there may be a bit of relief.
00:01:17.620 The federal government is boosting the GST credit, calling it a grocery rebate,
00:01:22.440 which Smerich says is welcome news.
00:01:25.080 Groceries are very expensive now, and it's really difficult to feed myself sometimes,
00:01:30.160 so I think that some extra money would definitely help out.
00:01:34.640 The extra money is targeted to low- and modest-income households
00:01:38.060 and will be paid automatically through the GST credit.
00:01:41.080 This will deliver hundreds of dollars more into the bank accounts of more than 12 million Canadians.
00:01:48.560 The quarterly GST payments will increase 25% over the next five years beginning in July.
00:01:54.440 A low-income single person would receive an additional $400 this year,
00:01:59.040 and a couple with two children would gain an extra $800 for an annual payment of $1,890.
00:02:05.800 It is encouraging to see this government making this step towards having something
00:02:10.300 that is kind of, like, baked into our tax system.
00:02:14.500 Opposition leader Pierre Polyev says his party will support the measure,
00:02:18.180 but that it doesn't go far enough.
00:02:20.120 Now the Prime Minister has revived a Trudeau-era rebate, which we'll let pass,
00:02:24.660 that will barely cover a few trips to the grocery store.
00:02:28.460 Some shoppers agree.
00:02:29.700 It's just a very short solution,
00:02:32.100 and this has been a problem for at least four or five years,
00:02:37.260 and I really do believe that we've got to do more than just hand out money.
00:02:42.340 But for Smerrick, even a small break can make a big difference.
00:02:46.080 I would definitely love to see something done about the prices of the groceries,
00:02:49.320 but for now I guess it helps to have the extra, like, money.
00:02:54.980 So again, the one-time GST credit boost is expected to go in July
00:02:58.820 with larger quarterly payments following.
00:03:01.400 Eligibility is based on income, and there's no application.
00:03:04.700 Canada is literally one of the highest taxed,
00:03:07.220 if not the highest taxed country in the world.
00:03:09.820 We're washed with natural resources, farms, food as far as anyone can see,
00:03:15.280 yet people are still starving.
00:03:17.480 You hear these stories about people living in Africa and South America,
00:03:20.400 and we're supposed to feel sorry for them,
00:03:22.180 but at one point do we start feeling sorry for ourselves?
00:03:24.680 But let's not act like Mark Carney or his drinking buddy Doug Ford actually cares.
00:03:29.480 Yesterday they were seen at a pizzeria in Toronto,
00:03:32.160 and they put out this cheesy video.
00:03:33.940 Before I show you this, I want to remind you I'm being heavily censored on YouTube.
00:03:37.760 If you see this part of the video, let me know in the comment section,
00:03:40.580 give me a quick like, and make sure you're still subscribed.
00:03:44.020 All right, let's watch it.
00:03:45.680 Very well about Team Canada.
00:03:47.500 Yeah, all about Team Canada, all aligned.
00:03:50.180 I found it twice as productive as the premier.
00:03:52.360 Did you guys make up?
00:03:56.340 We never had a problem.
00:03:58.400 Listen, guys, we're a big family.
00:04:01.380 And, you know, sometimes brothers and sisters may disagree,
00:04:04.920 but at the end of the day, make no mistake about it,
00:04:07.620 we are one country for Team Canada, both of us.
00:04:11.760 And yeah, is there differences?
00:04:12.840 Sure there is.
00:04:13.500 But I can tell you one thing, we agree on 99% of the stuff that's moving forward.
00:04:17.880 It's about moving stuff faster, quicker, immediate.
00:04:19.880 Let's get the approvals, get the shovels in the ground, let's start moving.
00:04:24.060 That's the way we agree on it.
00:04:25.740 And I won't speak for all the premiers, but I'm pretty sure they're all on the same page.
00:04:29.920 Yeah, 100% absolutely agree with the premier.
00:04:32.440 And, you know, we had, we must have been five things,
00:04:36.160 five big topics that we've worked through.
00:04:38.040 And, of course, in 45 minutes, worked up an appetite.
00:04:41.520 We're going to work on moving those forward,
00:04:43.600 and we're going to see each other in two days, five days, with the rest of the team.
00:04:47.000 Is there help coming for the auto sector that you were worried about, premier?
00:04:50.180 We're working with everything.
00:04:51.260 You know, energy, critical minerals, ring of fire, auto.
00:04:54.480 Those are key things.
00:04:55.480 They're drivers of our economy.
00:04:57.360 And that's what we're going to focus on.
00:04:58.960 We're going to have our strength, housing as well.
00:05:01.220 The average Canadian, they're literally counting their nickels
00:05:04.500 so they can buy some frozen pizza in the discount aisle.
00:05:08.000 But Doug Ford and Mark Carney, they don't care about that.
00:05:10.900 They're going right for the good stuff.
00:05:12.620 This video shows what liberal politicians with their fake conservative friends
00:05:15.900 actually think about Canadians.
00:05:17.660 They're giving Canadians $400, just $400 for a single person,
00:05:21.420 or $800 if you have a family.
00:05:23.180 But it's funny because people like Doug Ford and Mark Carney
00:05:26.300 probably spend $400 to $800 a week on groceries.
00:05:29.840 And that's just on the food.
00:05:31.220 They don't even cook or prepare it themselves.
00:05:33.800 And I love how Doug Ford talks about getting shovels in the ground.
00:05:36.940 The only exercise that guy ever gets is shoveling food in his mouth.
00:05:40.320 Now, you can say whatever you want about Polyev,
00:05:42.580 but at least he doesn't do cheesy photo ops like that.
00:05:45.540 In my opinion, and this is just my opinion,
00:05:48.340 both Mark Carney and Doug Ford should be banned for politics for life,
00:05:51.940 if not only for that video.
00:05:54.140 The video was terrible and they should be ashamed of themselves.
00:05:56.840 These are not serious people, and I'm still confused.
00:05:59.720 Why do people vote for them?
00:06:01.220 Pizza for us, crust for you.
