Trump announces new tariffs on Canadian auto parts and parts parts of the Canadian food sector. Scott Reed and Renee Renee talk about the latest in the escalating trade tensions between Canada and the United States, and what Canada should do about it.
00:00:00.240Now if you're a regular viewer of my channel, you would know that the mainstream media in Canada is extremely biased against conservatives, especially CTV.
00:00:08.900Now I'm going to show you a recent clip that makes it clearer than it's ever been before. Let's take a look.
00:00:14.620Hours before Trump's tariff announcement, Conservative leader Pierre Polyev slammed Carney for not reaching a trade deal with the Americans in a video posted on X.
00:00:24.600No place better symbolizes the Canada-U.S. tug-of-war for auto jobs than the river separating Detroit from Windsor.
00:00:36.080A tug-of-war that has intensified as President Trump has made clear he wants our auto sector and our auto jobs.
00:00:42.800Now of course, Mark Carney promised that he could, quote, handle Trump, that he could, quote, negotiate a win and that he would have a deal by July 21st.
00:00:51.300Well, here we are, it's almost November, and there's no deal, no win, no elbows, and increasingly, no jobs.
00:01:01.940And with me now is Scott Reed, CTV News political commentator. Good morning, Scott.
00:01:07.820Hey, Renee, let's do this as a walk and talk. That looks like it's a cool thing to do these days.
00:01:11.880Yeah, it was a little Rick Mercer-esque, wasn't it?
00:05:29.180Scott, your take on the meaning behind those comments.
00:05:32.640You know, it's a public acknowledgement.
00:05:34.440It's a nod for the tension that's arisen as a consequence of this ad.
00:05:38.240But you can tell the Prime Minister is also being careful not to back away from it because there is this tricky balance to be struck.
00:05:45.220Canadians want two things, and they want them both at the same time, even if they appear to be contradictory.
00:05:50.360They want their leaders, the Prime Minister, the Federal Cabinet, Premiers, business leaders,
00:05:54.340they want them to secure some kind of predictability, some kind of reliability in terms of trade relations with the United States because they know our jobs, our industry, and our well-being depend on it.
00:06:05.720But at the same time, they want our leaders, all those very same leaders, to stand up to Donald Trump, you know, to push back on his bullying and his belligerence.
00:06:17.140You can see the Prime Minister is struggling with not just in substance but also in comment as he skirts around this issue and deals with this issue of the ad that was launched by Ontario.
00:06:29.940It's a very challenging circumstance, and it's made challenging, let's be crystal clear, not by Doug Ford, not by business leaders here in Canada, not by the Prime Minister of the Federal Government.
00:06:39.500What makes all of this fundamentally and constantly difficult is the irrationality, the lack of attachment to truth, and the unpredictability of Donald Trump.
00:07:18.620Meanwhile, Carney, Trump, and other world leaders are attending the ASEAN Summit, where Carney emphasized that Canada wants to be viewed as a reliable partner who honors their commitments.
00:07:29.820Is there a strong enough case to support this?
00:07:35.160You know, there was a commentator in an earlier piece you ran that, you know, spoke to the sort of three-dimensional chest, though, that's having to happen here.
00:07:43.180Because even as we say, let's open up more discussions with more partners in Asia, because we're not going to have as full access to the United States.
00:07:56.000Even as we do that, the president of the United States will be placing pressure on Canada and even some of those Asian leaders to say, hang on, hang on.
00:08:04.380I don't want to see that happen, because he's got geopolitical interests with China.
00:08:07.800I mean, this is the absurdity of the circumstance.
00:08:11.140Donald Trump is limiting our access by whim to the United States market and then turning around and saying, don't you dare go looking for opportunities with the Chinese or other countries.
00:08:22.840Well, you can't have your cake and eat it, too.
00:08:25.440You can't hold our hands back and slap us in the face.
00:08:52.060First of all, it's become painfully obvious that CTV got their checks in the mail and they got their marching orders from the liberal government.
00:08:59.000Now, their main focus is whitewashing Carney's ineptitude and Doug Ford's ineptitude.
00:09:10.300Even independent fact checkers, independent fact checkers that are independent of everyone in Canada and the United States, that's what they're saying.
00:09:18.100And I'll attach a link in the description so you can look at that yourself.
00:09:20.800Despite the fact that they're obviously left leaning and obviously influenced by the liberal government,
00:09:25.360I find their latest attacks on Polyev to be particularly egregious just because they're so obviously biased.
00:09:32.840They're not even trying to be neutral anymore.
00:10:10.600But it's an import tax that gets paid by the importing country.
00:10:14.520So when Donald Trump says he's putting tariffs on Canada,
00:10:17.660really all he's doing is raising prices for American consumers and American businesses.
00:10:22.240Now, there's only a couple months before Christmas.
00:10:25.280And I don't think it's good that Donald Trump is raising prices on Americans just before Christmas.
00:10:30.280There's a lot of people in America that aren't doing so great right now.
00:10:33.140And that extra price increase could really hurt them.
00:10:35.720I really wish Donald Trump never started this trade war.
00:10:38.340Or if he was going to start it, wait until the election in Canada was over and we had Polly Eve in office.
00:10:43.100I truly believe 100% that Polly Eve would have got in if Donald Trump didn't start this whole trade war madness.
00:10:50.760If Polly Eve was in office, they'd get a great deal and we'd be moving forward.
00:10:55.100I don't think there was any advantage to having Carney in office.
00:10:58.060And even American podcast superstar Ben Shapiro agrees with me.
00:11:01.760Canada is the number one trade partner of the United States.
00:11:04.280They are not a financial or economic or physical threat to the United States.
00:11:08.940Treating them as such is not a wise move.
00:11:11.260It just isn't. And by the way, it's going to keep Justin Trudeau in power.
00:11:14.860The reality is that Pierre Polly Eve, who is the leader of the Conservative Party and is excellent, a terrific leader, would be amazing Prime Minister of Canada.
00:11:22.540Pierre Polly Eve has been sinking in the polls since the initiation of the trade war.
00:11:25.820Because people in Canada are associating Polly Eve with Trump.
00:11:28.340Even though he says he doesn't like the tariffs and doesn't like what Trump is doing.
00:11:31.320So you know what I would like? I would like lower tariffs with Canada.
00:11:34.340The United States should articulate to Canada what are the concrete steps that they want Canada to actually take to crack down on fentanyl trafficking across the border.
00:11:40.480We should actually make a significant ask and then get the ask, get the win, and then ratchet this thing down.
00:11:45.260Because it is not good for Canada and it is not good for the United States.
00:11:47.680And hell, I don't care much about Canada, but I do care about the United States.
00:11:50.320When you ratchet up prices on everything from oil to cars because of this.
00:11:54.200So I want to point out that video came out before the recent Canadian election.
00:12:00.100He took the words right out of my mouth at that time.
00:12:02.940He's a very intelligent guy and I agree with him 100% when he says Polly Eve would be a great Prime Minister of Canada.
00:12:08.760And just as a side note, sadly enough, it seems that Ben Shapiro understands Canadian politics a little bit better than some Canadian podcasters.
00:12:17.360And if you watch a lot of YouTube videos, you'll know exactly what I mean.
00:12:23.720Despite all their attacks on Polly Eve, I don't think it's going to work this time.
00:12:27.500I'm not kidding you when I still believe, I still have a high degree of confidence that Polly Eve will win the next federal election whenever it is.
00:12:36.860Ideally, we're going to have it sometime early next year.
00:12:39.480It could be sooner and I'm not sure if that's a good idea.
00:12:42.440But if we have the election sometime early next year, I truly believe that Polly Eve will get in, will get a majority, and then we'll start moving and getting our country back on track.
00:12:51.720Like I always say, just have a little bit of patience.
