Like, I don't know, I've been interested in it.
00:00:34.780
The main point we were making last week was that Jesus had seen the masses, right?
00:00:40.440
He had seen the crowds, but that's not who he spoke to, right?
00:00:44.040
He saw the crowds, then he went away, and then he brought his disciples to the secret place.
00:00:49.360
And then he elaborated to them what the kingdom was like so that they could go out and live it out.
00:00:53.340
So that's the context of the Sermon on the Mount, and that's how Jesus operates.
00:00:56.480
He didn't go to the government and demand that, like, the governor change or the president or anything like that.
00:01:02.780
He took a small group with him that could handle it, those who could hear and see, if you will.
00:01:10.880
So I'll just go ahead and read that, too, but then we're going to jump in at verse six.
00:01:18.420
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain, and when he was set, his disciples came unto him.
00:01:22.640
And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
00:01:30.000
Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
00:01:33.720
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
00:01:37.200
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
00:01:44.720
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
00:01:48.760
So, like, right from the gate, this whole thing of, like, blessed are those who hunger and thirst, there's just this mindset of a sense of adventure, which has always been a big deal to me, like, reading the scripture.
00:02:00.580
I just even, like, vividly remember reading the story of Abraham.
00:02:03.320
I'm like, yo, God just took this dude on an adventure.
00:03:06.820
All right, so last week we talked about the significance of the opening of the Sermon on the Mount, right?
00:03:12.160
It's Jesus, he sees the crowds, he sees the masses, and then he gets away to a secret place and calls his disciples there, right?
00:03:19.780
He doesn't go to the masses and demand that they accept this kingdom because they can't.
00:03:28.460
He elaborates on the culture of the kingdom of God.
00:03:30.680
That's what the Sermon on the Mount is so that they will go forth and they will live this out.
00:03:34.900
Like that's ultimately what the whole point is of the way Jesus deals with his church.
00:03:40.000
So we're going to start in verse six, but we'll kind of go back one through five from last week.
00:03:45.800
And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain.
00:03:48.720
And when he was set, his disciples came unto him, and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
00:03:52.440
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
00:03:55.980
Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
00:03:58.840
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
00:04:06.900
Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
00:04:11.820
And this whole idea of hungering and thirsting after something, it really reminds me of a sense of adventure.
00:04:20.480
Like it's something that you're like pressing towards, you're going after, you're hungering and thirsting after something.
00:04:26.440
And this sense of adventure thing is a big deal because like, I don't know, when you see people like losing their happiness in life and just kind of losing their funk in life,
00:04:36.760
a lot of times it just comes from like the monotony of life, man.
00:04:39.580
Like just like doing, it's not even a bad thing or a good thing.
00:04:42.880
The issue is that it's like the monotony of life.
00:04:46.340
Like you're just kind of do the same thing in church every Sunday, right?
00:04:49.260
And your life just kind of becomes the same thing, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
00:04:52.860
And then, you know, you got two sevenths of your life to kind of do something else, but that kind of just goes the same too.
00:04:57.720
And then people really struggle with just this monotony of life.
00:05:00.780
But like, I always recognize in the scripture that God was taking dudes on adventures, man.
00:05:05.240
And you could say that there's a whole thing about a sense of adventure, especially the story of Abraham I always related to,
00:05:16.120
And God grabs him and says, bro, you want to go on an adventure?
00:05:28.900
It's people who hunger and thirst after something.
00:05:33.980
And you could really say it's just people that are like discontent with everything that's unlike God.
00:05:39.560
I think it really goes hand in hand with blessed are those that mourn that we read last week.
00:05:44.940
It's like people are mourning over the state of things.
00:05:58.520
People who mourn over like the state of things in the world, like outside of God,
00:06:04.660
like those are the people who are going to hunger and thirst after righteousness.
00:06:08.840
They're not just like, oh, look how bad the world is.
00:06:12.100
But then they say, no, man, I'm hungering and thirsting for more.
00:06:16.640
Something inside me knows that there's something else.
00:06:22.000
And the funny thing about righteousness specifically is it's not really something that's our own.
00:06:29.440
We're going to we're going to dig into that right now.
00:06:31.320
So it's like this hunger and thirst for something that's actually outside of us.
00:06:40.180
I don't want to butcher it and get made fun of and stuff, but it looks like it's pronounced Dick of Zion, something like that.
00:06:49.940
And it's the state of him who is as he ought to be.
00:06:56.220
The definition would be the state of him is who is as he ought to be.
00:07:03.340
Think about maybe you have times where you think about like the way you wish you would act.
00:07:15.340
You're thinking about your thing like there's a way I wish I would act or a way I wish I did act.
00:07:20.460
And all of that is wrapped up in this word righteous, the way we wish we would act.
00:07:28.820
Another definition for this word is the way in which man may attain a state approved of God.
00:07:40.780
This was the big beef with the righteousness of the law was that people thought they could fulfill the law to a certain extent to gain righteousness.
00:07:47.220
Whereas like the righteousness that came by faith is something different.
00:07:52.240
So blessed are those who hunger and thirst after that.
00:07:59.620
And then I'll just give you another definition here.
00:08:02.840
It's integrity, virtue, purity of life, rightness, correctness of thinking, feeling and acting.
00:08:11.260
So blessed are the people that hunger and thirst after that.
00:08:17.220
Maybe there's a way you are that you're like, you know what?
00:08:40.260
Therefore, take no thought saying, what shall we eat or what shall we drink or wherewithal shall we be clothed?
00:08:50.100
This is saying like wrapped up in this is a command not to worry, which is rad.
00:08:55.400
Like if you think about that, like it's almost like you feel like you're like irresponsible if you're not worrying.
00:08:59.700
You feel like you're more responsible if you're worrying.
00:09:01.740
And then here's our Lord, the King saying, take no thought.
00:09:10.400
How are we, you know, where are we going to get our clothes?
00:09:13.480
For after all these things to the Gentiles seek or those who don't know God, those who don't know God, that's what they worry about.
00:09:19.200
But you in this kingdom, don't worry about that because your heavenly father knows that you have need of all these things.
00:09:27.240
But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.
00:09:33.640
Take therefore no thought for tomorrow, for tomorrow shall take thought for the things of itself.
00:09:42.240
But that verse 33, it says, seek ye first the kingdom of God, right?
00:09:46.080
Don't worry about all the stuff in the world that you need.
00:09:54.360
It's not saying you're going to be a millionaire and have private jets and stuff, but like, all your needs will be met.
00:10:02.540
You just seek God, and he'll take it from there.
00:10:04.160
I know we've talked about that before, even about like raising kids and stuff.
00:10:08.260
And like, the main thing is like, teach him to know the Lord.
00:10:11.940
Like, God will take care of everything from there.
00:10:15.080
Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
00:10:18.980
So right there, we're seeing it's not our righteousness, right?
00:10:24.940
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.
00:10:27.800
It's his righteousness that we're actually hungering and thirsting for.
00:10:31.300
So I just want to kind of elaborate on that point a little bit.
00:10:34.620
But there is something I want to say about this, man.
00:10:40.400
For your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things.
00:10:43.680
It's an intriguing thing sometimes when I pray.
00:10:46.980
I'm kind of like, God, I don't even know what to pray for.
00:10:49.440
Like, we have this long background now of God taking care of me in a way that I wouldn't even think to ask for.
00:10:57.460
Like, to give me the things that I would have never even thought to ask.
00:11:00.700
I always think of this wild story with Bella when she was little.
00:11:03.940
She was like, if she fell and scraped her knee, and I'd go pick her up, she'd be like,
00:11:18.840
Like, on a weekend, like, I was going to be there.
00:11:22.680
And when she'd see me in the morning, she'd go,
00:11:29.440
She just always associated with, like, I was going to work or whatever, right?
00:11:37.140
But I loved her, and I always wanted to snuggle her and be buddies and stuff.
00:11:40.800
And then one day I was watching, I think it was the Raiders versus New England.
00:11:46.640
And she was kind of, like, chilling on the ground and, like, playing with stuff.
00:11:50.080
And then she, like, got up off the ground, like, out of nowhere.
00:11:57.120
And she literally, like, grabbed my arm and put it over her like this to, like, snuggle me.
00:12:05.280
Like, I wouldn't, I didn't even think to ask for that.
00:12:11.320
Like, we can come to him with this list of things we want.
00:12:13.720
But it's so much lower than, like, what he has in store for us or what he has in mind for us or how he wants to bless us.
00:12:20.200
So the whole praying thing, that kind of had to shift for me of thinking that it was, like, this list of things I'm asking for.
00:12:26.040
And it became more of a thing of just, like, no, Lord, I just want to be lined up with you.
00:12:29.660
Like, let me do whatever you're doing in the earth as opposed to, like, give me this, give me that.
00:12:34.820
Because I realized, like, he was doing things that I didn't even think to ask for.
00:12:40.140
A real good example of what this looks like is Psalm 143.
00:12:46.040
Remember, we're seeking something outside of us.
00:13:03.580
Like, so right from the jump, like, this is what's happening.
00:13:07.120
Who knows if Jesus had this psalm in mind, like, when he was saying this.
00:13:10.780
But right away, he's talking about, David's talking about God's faithfulness.
00:13:15.520
Answer me in your faithfulness, God, and in your righteousness.
00:13:22.120
No, I was just, I was thinking of that hymn, Great is Thy Faithfulness.
00:13:35.480
For in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
00:13:38.020
So there's this connection between righteousness and justification.
00:13:42.080
Which who knows if David was getting that deep right there or not.
00:13:46.940
But he knows that he's in need of righteousness of another, right?
00:13:54.880
He's praying for this in expectation that it will happen.
00:13:57.880
This is a dude hungering and thirsting after righteousness.
00:14:04.440
He hath made me to dwell in darkness as those that have been long dead.
00:14:33.580
Which is a good thing to do if you're in a bad spot.
00:14:38.320
There is a wild thing when you look at the works of God.
00:14:41.380
And I don't know if everybody listened and believes in space or not.
00:14:46.360
But like, you know, like there's like supposedly there's like all the planets.
00:14:49.520
Yeah, there's planets and they're all doing their thing.
00:14:57.040
And on planet Earth, the deer go into rut every fall, bro.
00:15:00.140
Like at the same time, you can put it on your calendar.
00:15:04.180
And they kind of go into a rut as well in the spring.
00:15:11.820
And like when you're in the woods or when you're on the farm or where you're just out there,
00:15:15.480
like looking on the work of his hands, it does make you go, wow, man.
00:15:20.500
And it makes you understand the character of God, right?
00:15:25.360
And then he says, I stretch forth my hands unto thee.
00:15:30.820
So it's like a land that just hasn't had any rain, right?
00:15:36.020
And he's thirsting after God and his righteousness the same way like a dry desert land is thirsting for rain.
00:15:44.920
Hide not they face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
00:15:49.500
He's saying, I'm completely helpless without you.
00:15:56.780
And I don't know how many people like really think about this.
00:15:58.760
He's saying, if you hide your face from me, I'm like, then they are in a pit.
00:16:04.140
I think that's like, is that, is that what hell is?
00:16:11.060
Like when Jesus is on the cross and, and he goes, why have you forsaken me?
00:16:14.800
It's like, God turns his face away from his own son or himself.
00:16:21.480
I mean, it's, it's certainly like step one, right?
00:16:25.100
Is that you're away from God, but like, I don't know.
00:16:29.820
Sometimes you just have to watch yourself and make sure you're not just like looking for
00:16:35.660
Because what if like the blessings keep coming, but God's turned from you and you don't even
00:16:39.700
This is a dude who's saying like, I'm not just looking for your blessings.
00:16:49.040
Like, dude, if you hide from me and I don't have you, I'm gone.
00:16:57.580
And so I think it's important that we try to maintain that relationship and that intimacy
00:17:02.800
and that closeness and that connection with him, like that matters.
00:17:06.520
It's not just about the benefits you get from him.
00:17:14.700
Let's I be like them unto them that go down into the pit.
00:17:18.620
Cause me to hear thy loving kindness in the morning for indeed, do I trust cause me to
00:17:26.120
I should walk for, I lift up my soul unto thee.
00:17:28.480
So there's a lot happening in that verse too, man.
00:17:32.680
I know it's come up before where I talk about how like God will teach you directly.
00:17:36.200
It's just these passages come up because it's all through the scripture.
00:17:40.160
These, the context of like God communicating with you and teaching you directly.
00:17:52.480
Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning.
00:17:56.840
That like, if you study out like a lot of great men of God, they went after God hard first
00:18:02.460
thing in the morning, dude, early, early, their best hours, like their best hours.
00:18:07.960
I think there was a story of John Wesley where he was out late and, uh, not too late, but
00:18:15.700
I don't remember the story exactly, but he was with a King and he was leaving the dinner
00:18:22.540
Like if you're, if you're in the King's presence, like an earthly King.
00:18:26.980
So he, so he's leaving and they're like, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:18:30.700
And he's like, yeah, I've got an appointment in the morning with a greater King than him
00:18:35.720
It was just making the point that like, he gets with God, like first thing in the morning
00:18:45.520
Um, you could go ahead and say all the terrible stuff about Martin Luther.
00:18:50.460
I'm just saying that like dudes that know God, they get after him first thing in the
00:18:56.700
And I know for me personally, like a lot of times I'm fried in the afternoon anyway,
00:19:03.320
And so like, that's not, I'm not going to give that time to God, but I'm kind of half
00:19:08.700
Um, so there's there, I'm just bringing that up to say there's kind of, there's a lot of
00:19:13.560
You talk about getting after God in the morning.
00:19:15.280
David alludes to it a lot for in thee, do I trust cause me to know, cause me to know.
00:19:25.460
Again, we're just alluding to God teaching you directly, talking to you directly.
00:19:32.640
Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk guide me, right?
00:19:36.100
The scripture says like those who are led by the spirit of God, those are the sons of
00:19:43.080
Cause me to know the way wherein I should walk.
00:19:48.480
Me and you were on this rad adventure and I want you to guide me.
00:19:59.200
Like, cause he's telling him, I remember when you were saying, uh, about Elisha, he's saying,
00:20:03.720
cause him to see, like, like, let him see more.
00:20:08.260
Is he asking to like hear more into the spirit realm?
00:20:11.540
No more into the spirit, like where God exists.
00:20:13.760
That's what, this is what David's talking about.
00:20:18.980
Because like, that was a heavy prayer for me in the beginning.
00:20:23.220
I was like, Lord, I want to know what it's like in the spirit realm.
00:20:27.540
And I feel like after that, then I had clarity on like things on the earth.
00:20:31.780
Whereas like, if you're just praying for like clarity on things of the earth, you may be
00:20:36.240
more inclined to be like, should I be a Republican or a Democrat?
00:20:39.880
Whereas if you just go after God, then all of a sudden you see like, oh, the whole thing's
00:20:45.280
Like, like as soon as you enter into that discussion, you lose.
00:20:48.060
It's not, it's not, if you're just asking for wisdom in the natural realm, you're going
00:20:54.080
But if you have spiritual wisdom, you're more like, oh yeah, the whole thing is a scam.
00:21:00.780
For me, that's, that's kind of how that started was like going after him, trying to understand
00:21:08.820
But like, I was just like, what's it like where you live?
00:21:16.420
I was like, I just want to know what it's like there, man.
00:21:22.140
And then the things of the earth just kind of looked a lot clearer, man, like a lot
00:21:26.760
The scripture became clearer, assessing things happening in the world seemed clearer.
00:21:33.220
Like you just had a clearer understanding of your situation, people in your life, you know,
00:21:40.020
bigger, bigger picture events, everything, you know?
00:21:44.960
But so he says, cause me to hear and cause me to know because I lift up my soul unto you.
00:21:53.580
So like, like I'm with you, come hell or high water, I'm with you.
00:21:57.800
So you, so you teach me, deliver me, oh Lord, from my enemies.
00:22:14.360
And so, so here it is again, this is, here we go again, where it's a man of God saying,
00:22:21.080
It's not, he's not saying, teach me flawless doctrine so I can win debates.
00:22:24.880
He's not saying like, teach me the best stuff that I can do so that I'm right about everything.
00:22:32.520
The context of our kingdom just isn't like that.
00:22:39.380
And sometimes people like try to argue about how a church service would be.
00:22:44.600
I don't see anything in the scripture that's saying like, which way a church service should
00:22:52.580
All, all of these things that are being said, it has to do with your life.
00:22:55.580
When you're at the Walmart, when you're at the gas station, when you're at the coffee
00:22:59.200
shop, when you're at like wherever you are, it has to do with your life.
00:23:04.520
Not like just your doctrine or how you celebrate on Sunday morning or whatever.
00:23:09.380
So he says, teach me to do your will for you are my God.
00:23:15.860
So there's David in the Old Testament talking about the Holy Spirit.
00:23:24.460
He's saying righteousness, teach me righteousness, teach me how to live right.
00:23:29.700
Quicken me, oh Lord, for thy name's sake, for your righteousness.
00:23:33.780
For your righteousness sake, bring my soul out of trouble.
00:23:36.520
In thy mercy, cut off my enemies and destroy all them that afflict my soul because I belong
00:23:53.400
I think Psalm 143 is a great example of a dude hungering and thirsting after righteousness.
00:23:57.500
So let's look at Romans 6, 11 through 13, because it kind of elaborates on this a little more.
00:24:07.940
Likewise, reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through
00:24:23.960
You got like, if you want to kind of do your own thing, I'm with that.
00:24:27.180
Yeah, you know, this is a straight Bible by Top Lots.
00:24:36.000
If you want to do Romans 6, 11 through 13, what does it say here?
00:24:41.100
This is Jesus saying, Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life.
00:24:52.720
Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.
00:24:54.960
Well, who are the ones that won't hunger and won't thirst?
00:25:03.420
We're desperately seeking something outside of us, his righteousness.
00:25:11.400
You're not going to get his righteousness without getting him.
00:25:22.420
Now we're in Romans 6, 11 through 13, which all these passages, you know, they're just going
00:25:34.000
It goes, likewise, reckon you also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God
00:25:43.940
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body.
00:25:46.760
So the only things that reign is kings, like kings reign, right?
00:25:53.740
Don't let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body that you should obey it in the lust thereof.
00:25:58.920
Stop living like that, for your body controls what you're lusting after.
00:26:03.420
Neither yield you your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin.
00:26:07.600
So there's this connection between unrighteousness and sin.
00:26:11.560
But instead, yield yourselves unto God as those that are alive from the dead, and your members
00:26:22.420
So the scripture talks a lot about, and the next verse says, for sin shall not have dominion
00:26:28.480
over you, for you are not under the law, but under grace.
00:26:31.400
That's why sin won't have dominion over you, because you're not living for your own righteousness.
00:26:42.800
But I like this statement, as those that are alive from the dead.
00:26:45.840
Like the scripture goes to great lengths to explain that like if we're alive in Christ,
00:26:53.700
And I don't know, this thing that says, as those that are alive from the dead, like bro,
00:26:57.780
imagine if you died and you got to come back from the dead.
00:27:26.460
And then imagine if you got to come back, dude.
00:27:28.680
Can you imagine like how special and meaningful all the little things would be that maybe you took for granted before?
00:27:35.140
Like all the little things, all the little interactions with your kids, with your wife, with just regular people you don't even know.
00:27:42.940
Imagine how meaningful all those encounters would be, dude.
00:27:46.020
Like if somebody spilled like a drink on all the stuff here, it would be just so terrible.
00:27:51.700
Yeah, special interactions would be like so meaningful.
00:27:56.880
It would be so meaningful if you were back from the dead.
00:28:05.060
Live like you got a second chance or you're on like borrowed time.
00:28:09.380
And then he's like, I've already sold off enough to cover what I initially invested.
00:28:17.080
So now I'm playing with the house's money on the Bitcoin.
00:28:23.180
It's kind of like you have something that was never owed to you.
00:28:35.760
So there's another thing wrapped up in this, which is just that like your desires change, right?
00:28:47.340
I think church people sometimes too, like they get converted or whatever.
00:28:50.640
They start going to church and then they're just like, well, what do I do now?
00:29:00.140
I can't chew, you know, can't burp and fart in public.
00:29:03.780
And I know there's all these things I can't do.
00:29:06.460
And it's like, you've got, no, you got to, there's a thing you got to go for.
00:29:10.820
You can't take your foot off the gas and just try to be neutral in life.
00:29:15.500
Now it's time to hunger and thirst after righteousness.
00:29:27.000
So neither yield to sin, but yield to God, right?
00:29:32.420
Let's look at two Corinthians five, 14 through 21.
00:29:38.420
For the love of Jesus Christ, Christ constraineth us because we thus judge that if one died
00:29:50.940
And that he died for all that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves,
00:29:56.660
but unto him which died for them and rose again.
00:30:00.300
You remember when I was a little kid, the cartoons would be like, if a guy saved your
00:30:03.740
life in the cartoon, then the guy who got his life saved, like follow that guy around
00:30:07.300
the rest of the cartoon and like owed him everything.
00:30:12.820
He died for all that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto
00:30:20.560
Wherefore, henceforth, know we no man after the flesh, yea, though we have known Christ
00:30:24.740
after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
00:30:28.160
Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.
00:30:39.160
And all things are of God, who has reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given
00:30:45.120
to us the ministry of reconciliation, to wit that God was in Christ, reconciling the world
00:30:49.720
unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them, and has committed unto us the word
00:31:03.900
We have ambassadors to other nations and stuff.
00:31:05.780
But yeah, we're an ambassador for this nation, for this kingdom called the kingdom of God.
00:31:14.760
That's back to what we brought up last week, too, about the, you are the salt, you are the
00:31:19.340
Like, you are the representative of that kingdom.
00:31:24.960
So you're a representative of a kingdom that's not of this world.
00:31:29.880
We pray you in Christ, Steve, be reconciled to God.
00:31:37.680
Because he hath made him to be sin for us who knew no sin.
00:31:42.140
So that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
00:31:58.880
Can we look at, did I give you the three passages in John 6, 35, 4, 13, and 14?
00:32:09.540
It's a state of him is who is as he ought to be.
00:32:13.400
The way in which man may attain a state approved by God.
00:32:16.480
That's kind of has this secondary meaning to it that we, that we pull in.
00:32:21.680
But it means like a de facto good, like the standard of what it should be.
00:32:27.440
I think like the easiest, like, like I like simple definitions is like right living.
00:32:35.620
Like think of all, like I was saying, like think of these encounters you have and maybe
00:32:40.180
sometimes you have an encounter and you go, oh, I shouldn't have handled that like that.
00:32:45.860
It's like there's emotions get wrapped up in it.
00:32:48.920
But I just feel like the implication of the word is a description of before the fall of
00:32:54.140
like this, like how humans were made rather than how we behave now.
00:33:07.180
But, but nevertheless, we have that example in Christ now, whatever it was with Adam,
00:33:12.840
Well, who knows, man, there's a lot of questions in that, bro.
00:33:16.980
You got, you got a dude who's capable of face-to-face interaction with God.
00:33:21.640
Also the second Corinthians makes me think about like, uh, I guess what you call a backslider.
00:33:26.680
Somebody who, who, uh, knew and then goes back.
00:33:38.260
Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.
00:33:45.460
But we see a lot of times people, they're on fire or whatever it is.
00:33:56.580
If they're on fire and then they're not, it's called burnout.
00:34:04.660
But, but in all reality, this is a, this is kind of the sketch of source Rex thing about it, bro.
00:34:09.740
It was like, when you see like burnout in a church person, this is weird for me.
00:34:15.080
And it's a, and it's a topic to me because it's something I like dealt with in the beginning.
00:34:18.320
I remember like people in church old timers saying like, Hey, just take it slow, man.
00:34:23.360
We've seen a lot of people come to church and they just fizzle out after a while.
00:34:27.520
And I remember thinking like, that's crazy, bro.
00:34:31.200
All I know is the closer I get to God, the more and more on fire I am, the more and more
00:34:37.460
And I think slowly, but surely what I observed with people, man, is a lot of people in church
00:34:49.320
You're just, you're just like excelling at the church game and you're liking the praises
00:34:54.020
of the people saying, Oh man, you're doing great with that kid's ministry.
00:35:02.160
Now you're doing the college age group with the kids.
00:35:06.320
And, uh, you didn't just like watch worship the other day.
00:35:10.300
Maybe you did a little tongue talking and you know, maybe you even like ran around with the
00:35:15.640
It's like, okay, but what were they on fire for?
00:35:17.560
Cause if you're on fire with that fake ass system, you're going to burn out.
00:35:23.100
And I'm not saying a man of God who's really genuinely got a heart on fire for God can't
00:35:28.320
I mean, certainly all the activity of life can cause burnout.
00:35:34.460
So I suppose, yeah, if you don't stay on it, you could be genuinely going hard after God
00:35:40.340
Cause you're just, I mean, I think that's what the parable of the sower is, right?
00:35:43.300
It gives us these examples of people who got it and then kind of the cares of this
00:35:54.500
So there is these other ways, but I'm just saying we need to like differentiate between
00:35:58.360
people who were on fire for God and people who are on fire for that system.
00:36:03.620
I mean, I think that these people might think that they're on fire for God, but they're burning,
00:36:11.660
And it's like, well, who doesn't get burned out?
00:36:13.140
Like how many pastors do you meet that aren't burned out?
00:36:29.200
He that comes to me shall never hunger and he that believes on me shall never thirst.
00:36:43.200
So we got, uh, is that going to be nasty in the...
00:36:54.040
Jesus answered and said unto her, this is the woman at the well.
00:36:56.700
Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again, but whosoever drinks of the water that
00:37:05.060
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness.
00:37:08.720
Whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give shall never thirst, right?
00:37:12.420
He shall be satisfied is what it says in Matthew 5.
00:37:20.260
But the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into
00:37:26.140
It's no longer this thing from the external that you're like, then that's really what we
00:37:33.380
It's not this thing that you have to go to like this, boom, that comes within you.
00:37:45.800
Just like the whole concept of you're the salt and you're the light, right?
00:37:49.440
Now you have water that's welled up in you and now you're able to take it.
00:37:53.260
Now you're able to do something and distribute with it.
00:38:06.340
Pretty sure it's tabernacles, but I can't remember off the top of my head, but this is
00:38:08.900
an interesting study, like exactly what went down at the feast.
00:38:11.840
In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried saying, if any man thirst,
00:38:18.820
Remember the context is, blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness for
00:38:29.120
Which feasts are they talking about in the last day?
00:38:37.700
I mean, there was three that all the males had to present themselves at, right?
00:38:40.300
It was Passover, Pentecost, and tabernacles, which is an intriguing study, dude, which dude's
00:38:45.000
a lot smarter than me can make really interesting studies because like Passover and Pentecost
00:38:53.340
Pentecost did happen with the Holy Spirit shed forth on the church.
00:38:56.640
And so there's a lot of different views on like exactly how does it go down with tabernacles
00:39:04.880
But it's like, I think Chuck Missler had rad stuff on it too.
00:39:07.580
I could be totally butchering this, but I think that tabernacles, it's an extended period
00:39:12.340
I know that where you're like out, like the way people celebrate it today is like intense
00:39:16.220
with no roof, like where you can see the stars, it's open boots or tabernacles signifying
00:39:21.820
like when they came out of Egypt and they were in tabernacles or boots in the wilderness.
00:39:26.380
So some people call it the Feast of Tabernacles.
00:39:29.920
But I think there's other like days wrapped up in it too, specific days.
00:39:35.600
If he's crying, he's making his plea to these people at this time.
00:39:38.980
And I think that's why I think that's why I think it's tabernacles, but I, but because
00:39:47.220
But the last day, yeah, he's pleading with him.
00:39:51.260
He's pleading with him saying, if any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.
00:39:54.820
He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers
00:39:58.760
But this fake he of the spirit, this is, this is so wild, dude.
00:40:04.800
I would never want to ever read this and not be like shook by it.
00:40:08.060
This fake he of the spirit, which they that believe on him should receive for the Holy
00:40:11.420
Ghost was not yet given because that Jesus was not yet glorified.
00:40:15.460
So he's making this promise that anybody that believes on him, as the scripture has said,
00:40:21.680
This is, this is recorded in the scripture already.
00:40:33.300
He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, out of his belly shall flow rivers
00:40:40.540
So like he that believes on him, he has the Holy Spirit flowing out of him now.
00:40:48.320
But I'm just making the point that we get filled by him.
00:41:04.120
Are we on to Philippians three, seven through nine?
00:41:12.660
You didn't put this one in the notes, but that's all right.
00:41:21.020
I even spelled out Philippians because I, because I put P-H-I-L and then I was like, yo, he's
00:41:30.120
But what things were gained to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
00:41:37.240
And I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord,
00:41:41.920
for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and do count them but dung.
00:41:52.360
He's not a Christian because of the benefits he gets from society.
00:41:56.400
So it's not like, oh, yeah, I get these benefits from Christ.
00:42:05.620
The more you look at his life, he says crazy things right here, man.
00:42:09.980
For whom I've suffered the loss of all things and do count them but dung so that I may win
00:42:15.800
And be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law.
00:42:24.140
If it's not of the law, they were taught this whole time, the law, the law, the law.
00:42:36.900
He was, he had like a very successful life, right?
00:42:43.040
Uh, cause I don't want to be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of
00:42:51.820
He says, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness, which is of God
00:43:06.920
This might be the craziest verse that I may know him.
00:43:10.600
Righteousness, which is of God by faith that I may know him.
00:43:14.360
The power of his resurrection makes total sense, dude.
00:43:17.520
I mean, that's a staggering thought, but like the power of his resurrection, like, like
00:43:22.900
exactly what happened when Jesus rose from the dead.
00:43:25.560
I want to know about the power of his resurrection.
00:43:29.420
In the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.
00:43:38.680
He wants to know the fellowship of the sufferings with Christ.
00:43:46.880
We talk a lot about, yeah, people are Christians for all the benefits they get, but he actually
00:43:50.580
wants to fellowship with Jesus in his sufferings.
00:43:53.140
And so like, if you think about the sufferings of Christ and that he would say he wanted to
00:44:00.900
fellowship in it with him, like when my dad died, uh, they made a, they made a decision
00:44:05.920
to pull a plug in, uh, my brother went and sat in the room, like when they pulled the plug.
00:44:14.020
And, uh, I just remember him like telling me how it all went, like the, you know, the end
00:44:19.500
And, um, I don't have like, uh, I don't really have like regrets really about anything.
00:44:27.940
And I don't necessarily like, um, I don't know how I feel about all this.
00:44:31.440
Maybe this would be like the closest thing I have to a regret, but I kind of wish I would
00:44:38.260
And I just think it's not like my brother said anything or did anything.
00:44:42.940
He just was there to fellowship in his sufferings.
00:44:47.720
And it just feels like Paul is saying something that's like that, dude.
00:44:52.020
He's saying like, if you went through that down here, Lord, I want to go through that
00:44:58.400
Like, if you experienced that, I want to experience that because I want to be close to
00:45:03.340
And it wasn't like my brother could do anything in the fellowship of his sufferings with my
00:45:06.940
dad, you know, but he was just there with him in it.
00:45:10.120
And I just think that that's on a completely other level than most of us know about.
00:45:19.160
So not to get too sappy about everything, but yeah, something that's something to think
00:45:23.220
Like, does, does your dad even, was he even aware of that?
00:45:27.640
I always think that dude, I'm always thinking like, you don't know, like somebody who's in
00:45:34.840
the room and is like in a vegetable state or whatever, I'm always assuming they know
00:45:39.460
I'm always assuming like that their spirit is aware of what's going on.
00:45:43.600
Like I would never want to be in a room like that and say, oh man, he's really doing bad.
00:45:50.400
Like I would never want to do, I would be like, no, no, no.
00:45:54.660
Just because they can't communicate and say, oh, he doesn't have brainwaves.
00:46:03.760
But like at some point, like he's laying on the thing and they came in and pulled the
00:46:23.100
I mean, they were in California and I was in Florida.
00:46:24.840
And so it was a long, so my brother, you know, it was like down the road.
00:46:27.780
So he like went, but I think, yeah, they told me and I was just like, we were kind of distant
00:46:32.480
anyway, we had been distant for a long time anyway.
00:46:37.380
But at the time I didn't think that, like, you just don't, that's what I'm saying.
00:46:40.120
Like, I get, like, I guess, you know, I would say I don't, I don't really don't have regrets
00:46:47.300
I've done like a lot of bad stuff, but I just kind of taken it like, yeah, that's just
00:46:51.660
Like, that's just how this thing goes on the earth, man.
00:46:53.600
I'm like, you know, like I have a lot of stuff.
00:46:56.180
I look back things I did do and things I didn't do.
00:46:59.240
I'm like, oh, well, like, that's one where I'm like, yeah, dude, if I could get in the
00:47:06.280
Well, hey, Epstein, Epstein logs are talking about time machines now.
00:47:10.500
I would go back and I would go in the room with them and fellowship in his sufferings.
00:47:17.040
It's like, and I think that's what Paul's saying, dude, there's like this bond in that.
00:47:22.620
I think people say that when they're in war together, like if they're in the trenches
00:47:25.280
in war, they have this bond for the rest of their life that they can't have with anybody
00:47:29.340
else, you know, because they bonded in sufferings.
00:47:46.560
Yeah, I don't, I mean, if we're 45 minutes in in one verse, dude, this may.
00:47:52.400
I thought it wasn't going to go Jude vibes, dude, where it was only like three or four
00:47:57.360
Like, what do you have to deal with all this, right?
00:48:10.300
If you had just a sermon on the mount, like, like I'm saying, it crosses into so many other
00:48:16.340
It's, it fills in so many puzzle pieces and ties into so many other things.
00:48:22.120
If you just had this, you could get down pretty good.
00:48:24.460
Do you think he wrote this down before he delivered it?
00:48:37.380
Like, I've heard people talk about it before that he would have been trained in shorthand
00:48:42.500
because he was a, he was a, um, he took tribute.
00:48:45.300
He was like a customs official until he would be able to write.
00:48:48.880
So yeah, I, it seems that it's very likely that Jesus was watching the dude, Matthew,
00:48:55.660
So no, no, what I mean is like, did Jesus prepare this sermon beforehand?
00:49:07.700
I never picture him with some written, not to mention like, it's like they had big pens
00:49:14.040
Like they had parchment and it was probably a big deal.
00:49:20.320
Maybe, maybe like you got, you got stuff written there, but this is like, like, you know,
00:49:25.880
Like I, you want to talk about these things in this order.
00:49:35.640
Everything we're reading, we're reading from Paul, he's writing letters.
00:49:41.760
Jesus is just letting it rip and somebody is recording it.
00:49:45.920
Well, it looks like in Matthew's case, somebody is recording it.
00:49:50.120
I think that, um, you know, Mark, Luke and John, it's just a,
00:49:54.140
thought that like somebody at a later time set down to write it under the guidance of
00:49:59.640
Not like they're just trying to remember, remember one of the things is the Holy spirit
00:50:02.880
will teach you all things and bring things to your memory.
00:50:06.000
So like they're writing it doesn't matter if it was however many years ago, the Holy
00:50:12.340
And so it's God breathed as they're writing it.
00:50:16.000
I think this dude, I don't think he like wrote a sermon and had it in his hand.
00:50:22.200
So we're moving on blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy.
00:50:30.100
And this gets a little touchy with my co-host, but, uh, we're just going to dig into this
00:50:35.360
So there's certain people that will obtain mercy.
00:50:40.300
So let's talk about this word forgiveness real quick.
00:50:44.640
Forgiveness is letting go of bitterness, anger, or the desire for revenge.
00:50:55.860
Like in the, in, uh, chapter six, I think, man, forgive others, you know, as Christ has
00:51:03.680
Uh, so there's this connection between forgiveness and being merciful.
00:51:06.760
Merciful would be like, uh, not giving someone the punishment they deserve or to help one
00:51:16.320
The punishment they deserve, but, and then not doing it.
00:51:22.700
Words to live by according to our King, actually.
00:51:25.220
So let's look at like, I think of this passage and I'm like, there is no other story.
00:51:30.540
There's no other way to unpack this word merciful or this idea of merciful or blessed are the
00:51:36.780
merciful for they shall obtain mercy without this passage right here in Matthew 18, dude.
00:51:47.660
I've just like, just for context, like just for context of my life or even like in dealings
00:51:52.520
at work where I just remember people who got certain blessings, but didn't necessarily
00:52:06.460
Then came Peter to Jesus and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me?
00:52:14.740
I say not unto you until seven times, but until 70 times seven, like unlimited.
00:52:23.940
Therefore is the kingdom of heaven, like a certain King, which would take account of his
00:52:30.380
And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him 10,000 talents.
00:52:35.420
But for as much as he had nothing to pay, his Lord commanded him to be sold and his wife
00:52:41.260
and children and all that he had in payment to be made, which is really the debt that we
00:52:49.900
Like, like what we owe him for living in rebellion against him.
00:53:01.160
This dude's in the servant, therefore fell down and worshiped him saying, Lord, have
00:53:08.500
Then the Lord of that servant was moved with compassion and loosed him and forgave him the
00:53:16.180
But the same servant went out and found one of his fellow servants, which owed him a hundred
00:53:31.520
And he laid hands on him and took him by the throat saying, pay me what you owe me.
00:53:38.200
The guy that's like goes at his throat or the guy who said, no, man, I'll have compassion
00:53:45.360
And his fellow servant fell down at his feet and besought him saying, have patience with
00:53:52.000
And he would not, but went and cast him into prison till he should pay the debt.
00:53:57.700
So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry and came and told unto
00:54:04.280
Then his Lord, after that, he had called him, said unto him, oh, you wicked servant, I forgave
00:54:17.300
That's the same word for mercy in verse seven and in Matthew five, seven, should not thou
00:54:23.440
have also had mercy on your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you and his Lord was
00:54:30.000
wroth and delivered him to the tormentors till he should pay all that was due unto him.
00:54:34.860
So likewise shall my heavenly father do also unto you.
00:54:37.520
If you, from your hearts, forgive not everyone, his brother, their trespasses.
00:54:45.140
Doesn't that like so clear, like any more than any words clearly gives us a picture and an
00:54:50.820
understanding of what mercy looks like in the context is like, that's you.
00:55:01.940
And so he's like, bro, you don't like, look what I forgave you for.
00:55:06.420
Now you're going to go out there and live in the earth and not forgive other people and
00:55:12.800
Like, like, look at all this mercy I've given you.
00:55:15.500
And now you're going to go out there and not extend mercy to others.
00:55:23.860
And like I said, it takes a lot of different, uh, and it's kind of embarrassing.
00:55:39.900
He said, please, please, man, I'll pay you back.
00:55:48.440
He said, have patience with me and I will pay you.
00:55:53.780
This dude just got forgiven for 10,000 talents, right?
00:56:02.060
He says, no, isn't it's like such a stark contrast to the mercy that he was shown compared
00:56:07.060
to the mercy that he's not willing to show others.
00:56:09.360
But there's also this admittance of wrongdoing on this other guy's side.
00:56:29.660
And he said, he's actually saying like, yeah, dude, I'm in the wrong here.
00:56:32.760
Uh, but, but I owe you, but give me some time and I'll make it right.
00:56:40.240
The other guy is just being very harsh with him.
00:56:55.980
Because I don't think you, I don't think you forgive somebody who doesn't even know,
00:57:02.060
I think that person has to, they have to first understand that they did wrong.
00:57:06.900
But your job is to forgive and be merciful, regardless of their reaction.
00:57:13.140
The whole life, the whole reality of your life is in light of you and God.
00:57:20.440
So are we called to like, I'm going to forgive you.
00:57:24.940
And I go, Hey man, time to pay me a hundred dollars.
00:57:39.380
But you know, because you haven't learned anything.
00:57:41.060
Because you look at God and you go, man, you forgave me for so much.
00:57:47.360
Like I can't, I can't get forgiveness from Jesus unless I ask for it.
00:57:50.840
Unless I'd be like, yo man, yeah, I am screwed up.
00:57:58.320
I think, I think what I'm saying is also really clear.
00:58:00.440
I'm not saying it's not, I'm just saying you got to get used to this upside down kingdom
00:58:06.740
People are going to watch this and they're going to be like Sturgeon, Heppner, and then
00:58:13.300
No, they're going to look at it and go, this story is so cut and dry.
00:58:19.060
Are you really going to sweat the guy that owes you a hundred bucks?
00:58:25.580
So let's, from where the guy asked him, when he asked the other servant, and his fellow
00:58:35.060
servant fell down at his feet and besought him saying, have patience.
00:58:41.380
I don't know what besought means, but it seems like he's asking for forgiveness.
00:58:47.060
If somebody doesn't do that, then they don't deserve mercy or forgiveness.
00:58:52.020
I think that that's a very clear example of somebody understanding, yeah, dude, I'm in
00:58:58.440
I owe you and I can't make it right, but I understand.
00:59:03.120
And I think, you know, when it comes to money, money's a little different for people.
00:59:06.520
It's like, well, then maybe you could be like, all right, pay me later.
00:59:08.960
Or you're forgiven of this, whatever, however you want to deal with it.
00:59:12.500
But to put him in jail, a dude that's like, yo, I'm clearly wrong.
00:59:15.500
I know I'm wrong and I'm sorry, but I don't have the means.
00:59:21.480
You're saying if he, if he acts like that, well, yeah, it's like, cause now you're
00:59:27.700
I can't go to God and be like, uh, forgive me for my sins.
00:59:31.540
As I like watch pornography, I can't like pray and then continue this in this wrong.
00:59:40.080
Technically, technically not to disagree, but you can, as long as you're fighting against
00:59:47.740
God, I need you to give me the strength, whether it's porn, Oxycontins, an affair, like whatever
00:59:52.800
But there's gotta be, there has to be like an admittance on your part.
00:59:56.480
There has to be that confession almost of like understanding.
00:59:59.220
Cause now like, you can't do that with your children either.
01:00:05.140
You got to explain, explain to me that you understand.
01:00:09.920
So that's no, that's, you're totally entitled to that understanding of it, bro.
01:00:13.600
So you're just saying like, yeah, if somebody does you wrong and doesn't admit it, you don't
01:00:19.080
There's a, and that's, that, that goes around a lot.
01:00:21.200
And I, you know, I get accused of that as well.
01:00:34.420
Well, yeah, no, like mercy is for people who, listen, if someone's wronged another and
01:00:39.380
they come back and they'd be like, hey man, like that was in, yeah, that happened.
01:00:47.720
But if you change then when they don't do that, that means that guy owns you.
01:00:51.400
That means if you set out to be merciful, but you let somebody act to you another way
01:00:56.460
that stops you from living and acting the way you want to live, he owns you now.
01:01:02.720
And my life is in light of the reality of me and God, whatever that guy did, none of
01:01:11.260
So I like to think about this, that like, uh, moving on, just nothing happened here.
01:01:19.080
It like, like the bigger story is like somebody who's gaining mercy from somewhere above.
01:01:24.620
He's passing on mercy somewhere below, like this passing on thing.
01:01:29.700
Like, I think your boy, the, um, you said this about your buddy, the Tim foil hat.
01:01:34.920
Sam Tripoli is a dude who like people helped him out, like in the game when he was coming
01:01:39.800
up and he's a guy who's intentional to help out guys below him now.
01:01:43.900
That's like the, that's like this perfect picture of the kingdom of God.
01:01:46.500
He's doing it like he's living that that's really what this story is about, man.
01:02:15.960
Now, when he was in Jerusalem at the Passover in the feast day, many believed in his name
01:02:26.060
Uh, many believed in his name when they saw the miracles, which he did, but Jesus did not
01:02:31.080
commit himself unto them because he knew all men.
01:02:34.760
Um, this is a totally loaded three verses right here.
01:02:39.540
And I'm not even going to deal with like the main context of this.
01:02:50.860
I'm just going to say that Jesus did not commit himself unto them because he knew all men and
01:02:56.300
needed not that any should testify of man for he knew what was in man.
01:03:06.100
I think it's kind of comes back to like what you're saying is like, you look at the guy,
01:03:11.400
Jesus looked at me and said, this dude's a scoundrel and I'm still going to die for him.
01:03:17.440
That's what I'm, that's all I'm saying about this.
01:03:23.160
It's like, he knew me and he still thought I was worth dying for.
01:03:27.720
Like he, like he still thought I was worth extending mercy.
01:03:32.500
Well, that, that mercy, shouldn't that mercy always be open though?
01:03:36.100
But it's up to that person to like, they've got to want to receive it.
01:03:46.580
And to receive that, you've got to, there's something inside of you that's got to happen.
01:03:50.740
But so if that person rejects it because they don't want it, that's on them.
01:03:53.920
But I still have to be who I have to be in the kingdom of God.
01:04:08.460
Like I said, really just that main story, 18, 21 through 35, like that is the perfect picture
01:04:20.200
That's just a great picture of what we should be living like.
01:04:22.640
We should be extending mercy to others the same way Jesus extended mercy to us.
01:04:33.520
You have heard that it had been said, thou shall love thy neighbor and hate thy enemy.
01:04:39.020
Dude, maybe we're getting into this topic a little more.
01:04:51.020
Do good to them that hate you and pray for them which despitefully use you and persecute
01:04:59.100
Love, bless, do good, and pray all for enemies.
01:05:03.960
That you may be the children of your father, which is in heaven.
01:05:12.920
So that you may be the children of your father, which is in heaven.
01:05:15.580
Because he makes his son to rise on the evil and on the good.
01:05:19.860
And he sends rain on the just and on the unjust.
01:05:24.480
He doesn't say, oh, only if you're deserving of it.
01:05:28.320
For if you love them which love you, what reward have you?
01:05:34.620
And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more than others?
01:05:41.740
And that word means like mature, wanting nothing, wanting nothing necessary to completeness.
01:05:53.080
Even as your father, which is in heaven, is complete, mature, of full age.
01:05:59.940
He's saying, you act like that because you're a child of him.
01:06:09.640
This is including people that despitefully use you.
01:06:15.760
He says, yeah, for them, you don't change how you act.
01:06:19.180
You remain a child of the king and you act how he acts.
01:06:26.600
Now we're in verse eight, which is a wild verse, man.
01:06:31.380
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
01:06:39.920
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
01:06:42.540
So like, so who are the people that shall see God?
01:06:49.620
Because sometimes I think you had to stop and look at this stuff, man.
01:06:54.260
The people who will see God, it's the guys with letters behind their name.
01:07:01.400
It's the guy with the microphone on Sunday morning.
01:07:05.820
That's the qualifications to see God, to know God, for God to appear to a man,
01:07:09.940
for God to be able to recognize and communicate with a man.
01:07:13.320
He's got to be, he's got to have, he's got to be like very intellectual, man.
01:07:24.420
So seeing isn't an issue of like knowledge or education or intellect.
01:07:36.660
Well, are you aware of, I pulled down this book here, decoding Cody.
01:07:41.620
So this guy, he's a pastor, uh, Joseph and Franco, he works with nonverbal autistic kids
01:07:48.080
and they do spelling, which is, uh, they'll point to a board and slowly spell out words
01:07:54.140
and phrases and stuff to communicate after years of being like taught how to do this.
01:07:58.980
These kids are reporting that they go to this place called a hill and some of them say that
01:08:08.980
It's, it's a crazy thought because these are kids that physically can't, I mean, they really
01:08:17.560
They're trapped in the, trapped in their own body.
01:08:19.820
And they're almost like very, they are very pure of heart because they don't have these
01:08:23.480
kinds of earthly desires as like other people there, but they're here and they're claiming
01:08:29.180
It's just, it's interesting in conjunction with that verse specifically is what I, what
01:08:40.420
So the pure in heart, man, if we look at like, uh, they're going to see God, right?
01:08:45.260
We got pure in heart and then they're going to see God, right?
01:08:50.920
It's intriguing how much of the Sermon on the Mount, like cross references each other.
01:08:54.280
So as the days and weeks and who knows, maybe months by the time we get to these passages
01:08:57.600
in chapter six, but like, they're going to keep tying together.
01:09:00.980
So this says, uh, in 6, 22 and 23, the light of the body is the eye.
01:09:07.080
So now we're dealing with eyes and seeing again, the light of the body is the eye.
01:09:11.080
If therefore that I be single, the whole body shall be full of light.
01:09:16.140
We talked about this before recently on an episode.
01:09:18.600
I don't remember why it came up, but, but if your eye shall be evil, that whole body shall
01:09:24.860
If therefore the light that is in the, is darkness, how great is that darkness?
01:09:29.120
So there's this connection between the light of the body is the eye.
01:09:36.400
But if the eye is the opposite of single is evil.
01:09:39.800
So if the eye is after something else, it's evil, right?
01:09:43.860
I think we were talking about like Jesus plus, you know, there's a lot of Jesus plus in the
01:09:47.560
world today where it's like, yeah, Jesus is cool.
01:09:51.940
He's whatever, but you know, he's not God and there's Jesus plus these other things.
01:09:56.460
Or maybe there's even some people are like, he is God, but you also got to worship these
01:10:02.200
So, um, so it's almost like the pure heart is like the single eye.
01:10:10.920
Blessed are the pure in heart for they will see God.
01:10:14.760
It's the Greek word katharos and just a simple blue letter Bible search will tell you that
01:10:19.080
it means like clean, clear, purified by fire, a vine cleansed through pruning, free from
01:10:31.440
I feel like right here, free from everything false.
01:10:36.100
So like a sincere, genuine person who's just ruthlessly straight with God at the very core
01:10:41.700
of their being, that's the one who's going to see God.
01:10:44.900
And it's interesting too, that like one of these, uh, definitions of the word is like clear
01:10:48.800
and it's the same word that's in revelation 21, 18, where it's talking about new Jerusalem
01:10:54.800
And it's like the clear glass, the clear glass in new Jerusalem.
01:11:03.400
Like, I think your boy, the guy, uh, JT loves JC.
01:11:06.680
You guys were talking to him and he said, uh, Matt doesn't have a poker face.
01:11:12.480
And I thought like, that's a, you never watched the episodes.
01:11:20.640
Anyway, he said that he's like, yeah, Matt doesn't seem to have a very good poker face.
01:11:23.680
And I was like, that's like a very high compliment, man.
01:11:33.260
If you're dealing with like employees or, uh, not necessarily employees the most, but a boss
01:11:38.200
or just like, I don't know these other situations in life.
01:11:41.320
It's not necessarily wonderful, but that is a great way to be, man.
01:11:44.260
Like, yeah, there's, I have nothing to hide here, man.
01:11:50.880
Like in my seeking him and trying to understand his word is I never came to the word of God
01:11:56.840
saying like, I need to line up with what my denomination tells me, or I need to line up
01:12:01.260
with whatever I got taught in cemetery school, or I need to line up with whichever the cool
01:12:05.400
thing is on the internet today of like, what's cool for Christianity.
01:12:09.940
I just was like, Lord, WTF is going on on the planet.
01:12:23.380
And I think that is somebody who will get at God, man.
01:12:29.200
Like, like those are the people that get at God, the ones that don't have a hidden agenda,
01:12:33.180
the ones that are, that are transparent, the ones that are clear, the ones that are just
01:12:37.060
coming to them, sincere, genuine, and honest and say, God, I just got to know you.
01:12:41.680
So another thing is that it's pure in heart, right?
01:12:44.960
Because there's a, Jesus is going to shred the Pharisees as we get a little later in
01:12:51.900
So we got, so we have to make sure that we understand this is saying, this is saying they're
01:13:00.900
But this is a dude to where like God will appear or allow to be seen.
01:13:05.660
Or you could say, this is who God will reveal himself to.
01:13:09.000
So all the learning in the world can't change that.
01:13:11.580
All of the cemetery school or Bible college or letters behind your name, which I, which
01:13:21.400
I love, I love reading everything pertaining to the kingdom of God.
01:13:26.560
But this is saying that who he reveals himself to those who can see him or those who are pure
01:13:33.780
If we could look at Matthew 13, 10 through 17, and then we're wrapping up, we're getting
01:13:43.940
And the disciples came and said unto him, why speakest thou unto them in parables?
01:13:50.980
He answered and said unto them, because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of
01:13:55.920
the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
01:14:00.140
So notice the difference between you and them, because it is given to you to know the mysteries
01:14:05.340
of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
01:14:10.040
For whosoever has to him shall be given and he shall have more abundance.
01:14:14.300
But whosoever has not from him shall be taken away, even that he has.
01:14:18.620
Therefore, I speak I to them in parables, because they seeing, see not.
01:14:29.480
Some would argue that like that was a form of mercy that he was extending to them.
01:14:33.600
He spoke it in parables where they couldn't understand it because he knew that if they,
01:14:36.640
if he did speak clearly and they did understand it, they were still going to reject them.
01:14:41.760
And that would hold them even more accountable.
01:14:44.900
This is speaking to the Pharisee or speaking to the masses, like the crowds?
01:14:50.660
I think it's, I think it's all of the above, dude.
01:14:52.660
I think the Pharisees kind of controlled the multitudes for the most part.
01:14:58.380
Like the Pharisees demand that they crucify him and then the crowd does too.
01:15:06.440
He says, because they seeing, see not and hearing, they hear not.
01:15:10.740
And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah.
01:15:12.800
Like this wasn't anything that nobody knew was common.
01:15:18.620
Isaiah, which sayeth, by hearing you shall hear and shall not understand and seeing you
01:15:22.340
shall see and shall not perceive for this people's heart is waxed gross.
01:15:26.520
So now we have the seeing and the heart connection again.
01:15:31.900
This people's heart is waxed gross and their eyes are dull of hearing and their eyes have
01:15:40.260
So blindness in the scripture, you have to understand this blindness never has to do with
01:15:49.480
That's always where blindness comes in in the scripture.
01:15:56.520
Even when he like when Jesus heals people, he kind of tells them like, so go ahead and
01:16:05.420
Let's at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand
01:16:13.440
Because like we have a system today that all of the understanding is based on intelligence.
01:16:21.640
Understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them, which I love brain learning
01:16:28.100
I love learning through the brain and understanding by the brain.
01:16:30.840
But like things pertaining to the kingdom of God, he's saying.
01:16:33.920
Man, you're going to be cut off if you can't understand with your heart.
01:16:37.460
If you can't understand with your spirit, you can't understand.
01:16:40.500
If it's all just mental, if it's all just like logical, if it's all just intellectual,
01:16:51.680
And should be converted and I should heal them.
01:16:56.720
Now he's getting into who we're talking about here.
01:17:00.540
Blessed are your eyes for they see in your ears for they hear.
01:17:06.900
For verily I say unto you that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those
01:17:11.660
things which you see and have not seen them and to hear those things which you hear and
01:17:24.480
And then in verse 15, 16, he says, blessed are your eyes for they see.
01:17:41.820
I feel terrible for not giving you the whole list.
01:17:54.060
He says, for the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing
01:18:10.720
For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their
01:18:15.300
Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart
01:18:18.760
and should be converted and I should heal them.
01:18:23.180
So I would just, you know, ask this question that their eyes have they closed.
01:18:37.360
Like they were all working men, but they were from different paths to like some of them
01:18:45.360
There's a group that were fishermen, but these dudes all come from different paths.
01:18:49.560
And you got to think that like at that time he could have went to the temple like we would
01:18:55.060
have thought like, okay, if God's coming to the earth, he's going to start this whole
01:18:58.300
He's got to get dudes to carry this on with them.
01:19:06.780
He's going to get these dudes who've already memorized all of the scripture, but he doesn't.
01:19:13.340
There's colleges back then, universities, whatever.
01:19:17.280
He's going to get like the really smart people, the intellects.
01:19:20.040
That's who's going to carry on the mission of his kingdom.
01:19:22.780
He gets like a band of outcasts that don't seem to have anything in common.
01:19:28.600
But the more I look at it, the more I feel like what they had in common is that they were
01:19:35.260
Because if he's saying they could see what he tells us, how you can see blessed are the
01:19:40.960
And he tells them the difference between you and them as you can see, they can't.
01:19:45.560
So what is it then if it's not that they were pure in heart and that was how they were
01:19:53.740
Like, like what else did these guys have going for him?
01:19:56.980
What are the reasons would he have called these guys instead of the priests, instead
01:19:59.940
of the Pharisees, instead of the Sadducees, instead of the college educated?
01:20:05.360
But what they did have in common was they could see.
01:20:08.120
Well, blessed are the pure in heart because they shall see God.
01:20:27.580
Well, did Isaiah prophesy of you saying this people draws close unto me with their mouth
01:20:36.080
But in vain, they do worship me teaching for doctrines, the commandments of men.
01:20:39.940
Could you imagine that, like, there's these people that, it's not people that, like, claim
01:20:52.500
And could you imagine that they're worshiping him, but it's meaningless?
01:21:00.860
Can you imagine if you went to the show every Sunday?
01:21:06.420
Maybe you depend on what denomination you're from.
01:21:10.120
Or maybe you have, like, you used some instruments or something.
01:21:21.320
You see that idea of, like, it being a choice almost?
01:21:24.540
Like, not almost, but it being a choice that you do not see.
01:21:28.600
So that furtherance from God is a choice from somebody.
01:21:31.420
Remember when I told you I was in New York and I was like, yo, God's not there?
01:21:39.480
But there's just something about, like, the conditions of, like, when I'm there, I'm just
01:21:44.940
And, like, I kind of put myself in that state along with other things that were happening,
01:21:49.460
which is obviously, you know, that whole thing.
01:21:56.660
You just stay locked into the reality of you and God, man.
01:21:59.180
Like, that's kind of the more thing I find myself praying a lot too is like, Lord, let
01:22:03.300
me live my life in light of the reality of me and you.
01:22:05.800
Not me and New York City or me and whoever I'm tweeting about right now or me and somebody
01:22:12.400
who wasn't merciful for me and didn't ask me for mercy or me and even, like, good relationships,
01:22:18.500
you know, good family relationships, good work relationships.
01:22:23.180
Let me live my life in light of the reality of me and you, God.
01:22:36.360
And for those people, their worship meant nothing.
01:22:39.920
We can just keep rolling, actually, with this in verse 10.
01:22:43.280
And he called the multitude and said to them, hear and understand, not that which goes into
01:22:46.780
the mouth defiles a man, but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.
01:22:50.500
I used to use that passage to justify snorting Oxycontins when I loved the Lord.
01:22:56.740
You can deceive yourself with scripture and you can make stuff mean whatever you want it
01:23:02.780
I don't think I like dwelt on it a lot, but I was like, yep, that passage means I'm good,
01:23:06.540
There's nothing I can put into me that makes me unclean.
01:23:09.240
And then the Lord dealt with me on that directly.
01:23:11.080
So that was a whole other story for another time.
01:23:13.280
But then came his disciples and said unto him, knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended
01:23:20.360
He's like, yo, they know you're calling them out, man.
01:23:25.600
But he answered and said, every plant which my heavenly father has not planted shall be rooted
01:23:35.420
And if the blind leads the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.
01:23:41.900
Otherwise, it's just the blind leading the blind.
01:23:43.960
And the worst part about that is not that the blind go into the ditch.
01:23:46.900
There's people being guided by them, being led by them.
01:23:50.660
They're not just leading themselves into the ditch.
01:23:53.040
They're leading all their followers into the ditch.
01:23:55.800
So yeah, I'm a little suspect of the modern 501c3 system.
01:23:59.580
I am, but it's because I'm a Bible reader because I'm like, dang, man, it just looks
01:24:03.580
like throughout history, dudes kind of like get a little sideways when they're in leadership
01:24:08.520
roles and religion and they can lead people astray.
01:24:13.640
They go into a ditch that they lead others into, which doesn't mean everybody's bad in
01:24:18.300
I'm just saying I watch it with a little bit of skepticism.
01:24:23.920
I mean, outside of the church that are doing the same things.
01:24:27.300
Then answered Peter, said unto him, declare unto us this parable.
01:24:30.620
Jesus said, bro, are you still without understanding?
01:24:34.220
Do not you yet understand that whatsoever enters in at the mouth goes into the belly and is
01:24:44.180
But those things which proceed out of the mouth, those come from the heart.
01:24:55.440
It says guard your heart because all of the issues of life come out of it, which is basically
01:24:59.440
He says, for out of the heart proceeds evil thoughts.
01:25:06.060
Out of the heart proceeds evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false
01:25:12.680
These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands defiles not a man.
01:25:20.220
We're just bringing that up to say, watch the heart, man.
01:25:23.300
All of the issues of life come out of the heart.
01:25:30.940
Let's look at Titus 1, 15 and 16, and then we're really at the end.
01:25:48.240
But unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure, but even in their mind and
01:26:04.520
Why just watch this movie that has crazy stuff in it?
01:26:07.260
Yeah, you probably don't want to bombard your spirit with all that stuff, but you're good.
01:26:14.600
But under them that are defiled and unbelieving, nothing's pure.
01:26:20.220
Nothing sincere and genuine and good and clear like we talked about, clean, clear, purified
01:26:34.560
They profess that they know God, but in works, they deny him being abominable and disobedient
01:26:47.540
Blessed or under the pure, all things are pure.
01:26:52.280
I just don't want my life to be this series of events where I'm trying to be like doing
01:27:02.040
I want to focus my life on like becoming pure because then everything's pure.
01:27:07.800
Like the number one thing you can do for God isn't the canned food drive, which can't food
01:27:12.340
Or the spaghetti dinner or the fish fry or whatever.
01:27:15.020
The number one thing you can do is get alone with God and let him cultivate these characteristics
01:27:35.520
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth where moth and rust doth corrupt and where thieves
01:27:43.080
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth nor dust doth corrupt and
01:27:51.080
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
01:27:54.980
That's the core of what we're getting at here, man.
01:27:57.480
Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
01:28:00.360
Or wherever your heart is, there will your treasure be.
01:28:03.900
So this is what, and we're going to get into that whole 19, 20, 21 as we get through chapter
01:28:10.840
This is Jesus commanding us not to lay up treasure on earth and then commanding us, but
01:28:18.000
That's an intriguing statement, but that's not what we're dealing with here.
01:28:20.440
We're dealing with for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
01:28:23.600
So the question is that like for all of us, right?
01:28:34.520
Like what, like that, like to me, that's a big question.
01:28:36.460
It's like, what, what do you do in your free time?
01:28:39.600
Where does your brain go when you're driving, when you're driving?
01:28:42.220
Where does your brain go when it's got some freedom to think, you know, you're not sleeping
01:28:46.740
and you're not at work and you're kind of in this free time space.
01:28:53.000
For me, it was very easy to go to financial things.
01:28:56.640
Like, uh, my living situation, fixing up my house, uh, getting something new, buying something
01:29:03.140
new, like, so, you know, and then just other things just of the natural world.
01:29:09.060
But just keep in mind, man, you don't want to lay up treasure on earth.
01:29:12.180
You do want to lay up treasure in heaven and where your treasure is there where your heart
01:29:18.540
What is it that you're really seeking and what is it that you're really focusing on in
01:29:23.280
Is it spent on things that will mean nothing in eternity or have we changed and become
01:29:29.260
focused on the things that will matter in eternity, right?
01:29:33.380
It's the Colossian letter where Paul says, set your affections on things above and not
01:29:38.600
And I just want to encourage everybody to do that.
