00:00:00.000 You're a man of action. You live life to the fullest. Embrace your fears and boldly chart your own path.
00:00:06.020 When life knocks you down, you get back up one more time. Every time.
00:00:10.460 You are not easily deterred or defeated. Rugged. Resilient. Strong.
00:00:15.520 This is your life. This is who you are. This is who you will become.
00:00:19.760 At the end of the day, and after all is said and done, you can call yourself a man.
00:00:25.260 Gentlemen, what is going on today? My name is Ryan Michler, and I am the host and the founder of this movement.
00:00:30.000 The Order of Man, which is now spanning the entire planet.
00:00:33.220 We are working to restore and reclaim masculinity in a society that seems to be forgetful about what masculinity means and how it shows up and why it's so important that each and every one of us as men embrace what it actually means to be a man.
00:00:47.060 There's a lot of confusion out there. It's my job. It's my responsibility and, frankly, my moral obligation to help clear up some of this confusion.
00:00:55.120 And we do that each and every week by bringing you these podcasts. We've got the blog. We've got social media channels.
00:00:59.420 We've got all of the things that will help you become a better man, a better man in your home, a better man in your business, your family, just your life in general.
00:01:07.400 If you are working to become better in all of those areas, that's what my goal is.
00:01:12.160 So we've got our interview show, which is done every Tuesday. We've got the Ask Me Anything with Kip Sorensen and myself every Wednesday.
00:01:20.180 And then we've got this Friday Field Notes, which is me every Friday, obviously, where you are going to hear from me about some of my thoughts and insights and ideas and things I've been thinking about from throughout the week.
00:01:31.020 And I've got a really interesting one lined up for you today. Very practical. It's a very practical podcast in discussion.
00:01:38.660 Now, before I get into that, and I do have a lot that I want to get through, so I'm just going to make a very, very quick mention of my friends and show sponsor Origin Maine.
00:01:47.260 Guys, if you're looking for gifts, if you're looking for a gift for somebody in your life, if you're trying to give somebody gift ideas, then I would recommend taking a look at what Origin Maine is doing, specifically with their nutritional and the supplemental lineup that's partnered up with Jocko.
00:02:04.400 It's the Joint Warfare, it's their discipline, it's the Super Krill, it's the Molk, it's everything that you could need by way of supplements to supplement what it is you're doing with your exercise and diet and nutrition and all of the other things that you're doing.
00:02:18.100 So guys, check it out. If you head to, let's see, originmaine.com, originmaine.com and use the code ORDER, O-R-D-E-R, at checkout, you will get a discount on every item that you purchase over there.
00:02:31.720 Again, originmaine, as in the statemaine.com, and then use the code ORDER, at checkout.
00:02:37.960 All right, guys, with that said, let's get into this discussion today.
00:02:41.920 Now, you'll notice, probably notice, that I titled this, Buy Windshield Wipers Before It Rains.
00:02:48.180 Now, the reason that I titled this is because I had a very interesting story, a very interesting scenario that happened to me.
00:02:56.540 This was about a week and a half ago. I went into the auto parts store, and I went up to the clerk, and I said, hey, I need windshield wipers for this make and model of vehicle.
00:03:09.260 He said, great. Looked it up on his computer. We went to the aisle, picked them out, and he said, why are you buying windshield wipers?
00:03:14.860 I said, because when it rains, I want to make sure that I have windshield wipers to be able to clear off my windshield.
00:03:21.520 Like, why else would you buy windshield wipers? He said, no, no, no. I'm just asking because it's not raining.
00:03:25.620 And it was kind of funny. It's like, well, does it need to rain first in order for me to buy windshield wipers?
00:03:32.480 And he said, no, that's just what most people do. He says, when it's sunny, nobody buys windshield wipers, but when it's raining, we sell out of them just about every single time, which I think kind of makes sense.
00:03:42.480 I think we all inherently know that, but I would rather be a little bit more prepared up front.
00:03:47.860 And that's what this conversation is about today.
00:03:50.080 So I'd rather be prepared before something negative happens or something bad potentially happens and be adequately prepared for that thing, then have to rush and scramble and not be as effective in that circumstance.
00:03:59.960 So it must've been, I don't know, three, maybe four days later, it was raining and I didn't anticipate it raining.
00:04:07.740 It just worked out that way.
00:04:09.000 And so I was driving down the road and I happened to drive past the auto parts store.
00:04:12.820 I live in a pretty small town.
00:04:13.860 So I drove past the auto parts store and I see a guy in the parking lot and it's raining, mind you.
00:04:21.700 And he is in the parking lot putting his new windshield wipers on his car because he's one of the guys who waited until the last minute.
00:04:30.720 Now, no judgment there.
00:04:31.620 Look, I've waited to the last minute.
00:04:34.060 I've caught myself by surprise and not put myself in the best situations, not when it comes to just buying windshield wipers, but every facet of life.
00:04:42.940 And so I think all of us have a tendency to do this.
00:04:45.040 But the idea behind buying windshield wipers before it rains is that when something negative happens, whether it's a rain or a divorce or a natural disaster or an emergency situation or a medical condition
00:04:57.620 or any number of things that we are likely to face as men in our lifetime, it's critical.
00:05:03.640 It's critical that we be prepared for those things.
00:05:06.340 I came across this quote that I wanted to share with you from the book.
00:05:10.580 And I've quoted from this book before.
00:05:11.880 So you guys are probably familiar with it.
00:05:13.280 It's by David D. Gilmore.
00:05:15.140 It's called Manhood in the Making Cultural Concepts of Masculinity.
00:05:19.600 And this quote was really, really fascinating to me.
00:05:21.640 In fact, it's one of my favorite quotes.
00:05:23.360 And it goes like this.
00:05:24.100 The real man gains renown by standing between his family and destruction, absorbing the blows of fate with equanimity.
00:05:30.960 Now, I am a little embarrassed to admit that I didn't know initially what equanimity was.
00:05:36.580 So I looked it up because I wanted to make sure I knew what the hell it is I was talking about.
00:05:41.020 And equanimity means this mental calmness, composure, and an evenness of temper, especially in a difficult situation.
00:05:49.800 Guys, I think this makes perfect sense.
00:05:51.960 I think this illustrates perfectly part of our job as a man.
00:05:56.840 Now, it says family in here, but I think you can broaden that out to mean community, to mean neighbors, to mean those under your care, employees, coworkers, colleagues.
00:06:05.060 It's those people in your care.
00:06:06.900 And you gain renown.
00:06:08.040 You gain position, if you will, by being the type of man who's able to stand in difficult situations with mental calmness and clarity and focus.
00:06:19.060 And the decisiveness and leadership skills in order to get you past that thing that you may be dealing with or others past the thing they may be dealing with as well.
00:06:27.440 So what I wanted to talk with you about today, and again, this is going to be very pragmatic.
00:06:32.780 It's very practical what I want to address with you.
00:06:34.860 And if you go to orderofman.com slash prepare, orderofman.com slash prepare, I have put together a very rough checklist of some of these things that I think each and every one of us need to at least consider, if not implement in our lives,
00:06:52.500 in order to be more prepared for a dark day, a rainy day, a natural disaster, an emergency, a death of a loved one, I mean, you name it, anything that may happen to us.
00:07:02.040 And what I did is I broke these subjects down into, I think I've got six here.
00:07:07.900 Yes, six main categories that I think each and every one of us need to be prepared in a little better.
00:07:12.840 Now, mind you, in disclaimer here, this is not the end all, save all.
00:07:15.960 All right, so I realize there may be additional things here, and if there is, share those things with me, share those with the guys, get in our Facebook group, which is facebook.com slash groups slash orderofman.
00:07:26.460 I'm very active on Instagram at Ryan Mickler, relatively active on Twitter, which is at orderofman.
00:07:32.780 Connect with me in any of those places and we can talk more about this.
00:07:35.320 But again, I broke this down into six categories.
00:07:38.240 I'm going to go through them right now, and these aren't in any order, all right?
00:07:41.780 They're not in any particular order.
00:07:43.320 It's just what came to mind first.
00:07:44.680 So, when it comes to being prepared, let's talk about physical fitness and physical readiness first, all right?
00:07:50.580 Again, not in any order, but I think this is critical.
00:07:53.220 Guys, we have got to be prepared physically.
00:07:56.620 When I say prepared physically, I don't know what necessarily we'll need to be prepared for.
00:08:01.380 It could be that we have to run away from somebody or run towards somebody.
00:08:05.700 It could be that we have to lift a car hood off of our family in an accident.
00:08:09.540 Any number, again, of things that could potentially happen.
00:08:12.040 And so, it's critical, critical that we exercise every single day.
00:08:16.440 Now, I'm not going to get into what type of exercise is best.
00:08:19.140 And should you be doing strength training or powerlifting or CrossFit or running marathons or sprints or whatever?
00:08:24.900 That's up for you to decide.
00:08:26.160 And we've had other guests that have talked about that stuff.
00:08:28.400 But ultimately, and at the foundational level, if you're not exercising on a daily basis, you are inadequately prepared to deal with all that life has to offer.
00:08:37.680 So, number one, exercise daily.
00:08:39.880 Number two, eat right.
00:08:41.500 Put the right foods and the right fuels into your body.
00:08:45.740 And again, I'm not going to get into what's best, whether it's keto or paleo or intermittent fasting.
00:08:51.040 I think a case can be made for all of these diets to some degree.
00:08:54.120 But I think all of us inherently know what's good for us, right?
00:08:58.180 If I said, we're going to have a chicken breast, most people would say, yes, that's healthy.
00:09:03.480 If I were to say, let's go have a burger at Burger King, then most people would say, no, that's not healthy.
00:09:08.200 Or French fries and donuts.
00:09:10.200 Everybody knows, all right?
00:09:11.240 So, it's not a mystery.
00:09:13.220 It's not guesswork here.
00:09:14.140 But you really, really ought to strive to put the right fuels into your body so that you are burning up fat, that you have the opportunity to build muscle, and you're fueling the machine that your body is so it can perform and produce when it's called upon.
00:09:28.880 So, number one, again, daily exercise.
00:09:31.200 Number two, eating right.
00:09:32.820 And number three, and I think this is something a lot of guys overlook, is proper sleep.
00:09:37.360 We hear a lot of guys talk about, oh, I'll sleep when I'm dead, and sleep is for the week, and nobody should take naps, that kind of stuff.
00:09:43.920 And, look, I get it.
00:09:45.140 I understand it.
00:09:45.880 It's catchy.
00:09:46.620 It sounds tough.
00:09:47.380 But at the end of the day, humans need sleep.
00:09:49.680 You need the right amount.
00:09:51.140 You need the right type.
00:09:52.360 And I've had other podcast guests on that have talked about how to get that type of sleep.
00:09:56.560 But, guys, that's critical, critical that we find and carve out enough time in our day, in our evening, to get the right amount of sleep so that we can be well-rested, our body can recover in a way that we can go back to work and put it into work and be more productive.
00:10:13.560 So, those are the three pillars.
00:10:15.300 Of course, there's a lot of other stuff when it comes to reducing unnecessary stress and how screen time impacts our ability to sleep.
00:10:24.240 There's a lot to it.
00:10:24.980 But, look, if you're getting these basics right, you're probably better off than 95% of the population, which is go out, exercise every single day, at least an hour, I would say, if not more.
00:10:36.300 Number two, eating right.
00:10:37.960 And then number three, proper sleep.
00:10:39.740 So, that's physicality.
00:10:41.360 The next one, again, not in any order, is your domain.
00:10:44.400 Now, when I talk about your domain, I'm talking about your home.
00:10:47.380 I'm talking about your office, your neighborhood, anywhere that you conduct your business or conduct your affairs.
00:10:52.820 That is your domain.
00:10:54.140 And even if you're not in the position of authority within that domain, I do believe that it's your job as a man to be prepared in these environments and then to help other people in these environments be prepared.
00:11:06.640 So, let's break this down a little bit more here.
00:11:09.160 Number one, I wrote, is understanding travel routes, understanding traffic, understanding time, understanding travel routes.
00:11:16.960 If one traffic or, excuse me, travel route is packed or congested, do you have a detour that you could take?
00:11:24.680 But understanding how to get to and from and wherever you're going is really, really important.
00:11:29.840 All right.
00:11:30.460 Number two, security.
00:11:32.200 You've got to secure these places.
00:11:34.000 And that could be a dog.
00:11:35.740 And I don't recommend just one of these things, by the way.
00:11:37.620 When I look at my security for my domain, my home, my office, those types of areas, I'm looking at a layered system, a tiered system.
00:11:46.060 So, it could be a dog.
00:11:48.240 It could be a home security system.
00:11:50.600 It's putting deadbolts on the door.
00:11:52.960 I've even heard people, experts, talk about having boots at the front door or toys in the yard, which actually ward off potential break-ins.
00:12:02.420 Because thieves don't want unpredictability.
00:12:05.420 And having an animal, having a man, and having children in the home makes things unpredictable.
00:12:12.220 And they're trying to alleviate that so they'll avoid what they think might potentially cause problems.
00:12:17.460 At the end of the day, you want to make yourself the hardest target out there.
00:12:21.920 And if you can make yourself, your domain, the hardest target out there, you're significantly more likely to keep your domain secure.
00:12:29.500 Clint Emerson, 100 Deadly Skills, former Navy SEAL, friend of mine.
00:12:33.840 He's got some great stuff on not only securing your domain, but how to be prepared in natural disasters and emergencies and everything else.
00:12:40.460 So, I definitely recommend that you look up Clint.
00:12:43.240 He's actually been on the show a couple of times.
00:12:45.300 Don't know what podcast numbers are, but you can go back and check it out and find that.
00:12:49.300 Clint Emerson.
00:12:49.900 The next one, emergency plans.
00:12:52.660 Guys, if you don't know how you're going to handle yourself and conduct yourself in natural disasters, in break-in situations.
00:12:59.700 I mean, we had these fires in California and we have earthquakes and we have people breaking in.
00:13:04.260 You may be stuck in your home for two, three, four, five days.
00:13:07.980 You've got to have an emergency plan.
00:13:10.160 You have to know how to get out of there most effectively, how to get out of there most efficiently.
00:13:15.080 Patiently, you need to be able to communicate with your family and your colleagues and your coworkers so everybody's not running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
00:13:22.760 There has to be a very clear plan.
00:13:25.360 And what a lot of guys will say is, oh, if it ever happens, and they may not even say it.
00:13:29.100 They may just think it.
00:13:29.960 If anything ever happens, I'll just do this.
00:13:31.980 I'll just be a badass and get all this stuff taken care of and everything will be fine.
00:13:36.280 Look, you are setting yourself and those people under your care up for failure.
00:13:41.120 If you aren't thinking about these things ahead of time, you aren't planning for these things and you aren't creating some sort of contingencies and plans that will ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible in the wake of chaos, frankly.
00:13:56.520 The next thing, food storage.
00:13:58.520 Guys, food storage is really, really important.
00:14:01.180 I've got a seller down here.
00:14:02.720 Every time we go to the grocery store, we buy something else for food storage, something we can put in there.
00:14:07.720 We've got water.
00:14:08.460 My wife has a garden out in the backyard and so she cans every single year.
00:14:13.940 We've got salsa and we've got peaches and we've got green beans and we've got all of these different fruits and vegetables that are canned and secured there for our use should something happen.
00:14:22.940 And even if something doesn't happen, look, you might fall upon hard times.
00:14:27.040 There was a time in my life where, I mean, we were really, really struggling financially, struggling to make the mortgage and the car payments and the everything else.
00:14:34.680 And we were living off of food storage.
00:14:36.480 We would take beans out of the cans and food storage and we were eating beans and rice and everything that we could just to survive.
00:14:44.280 And so that food storage really, really came in handy during those times.
00:14:48.200 And then the next thing I wrote down here is bug out bags.
00:14:51.060 Just having some sort of bag and I've got two hiking bags here in my cellar.
00:14:54.820 But having a bag that has some equipment, some tools, some resources that you may need should you have to get out of the house quickly.
00:15:04.760 This could be in a hurricane, for example.
00:15:07.400 We saw a lot of that.
00:15:08.140 People had to leave their homes or even in the fires.
00:15:09.960 People had to leave their homes and everything was destroyed and they didn't have anything to take with them.
00:15:14.400 So this is extra clothing, basic, basic medical supplies, maybe some food can be in there, firearms, these types of things can be in there.
00:15:25.680 I would also say on food storage, I'm just thinking about this now, that having ammunition would also be important.
00:15:31.540 And this is sometimes I lose people on this and they think I'm one of these right wing nut jobs or something like this.
00:15:36.960 But having ammunition set aside and your firearm set aside, and I'll talk more about that here in a minute, is also really, really important.
00:15:43.520 You just don't want to be caught unprepared.
00:15:46.000 And I hope that I never have to use a lot of these things.
00:15:49.260 I hope they just sit there and don't do anything and I just review them periodically and that's the most use they get.
00:15:54.060 But man, I just want to be prepared should it happen.
00:15:57.300 So bug out bags was the last thing.
00:15:59.680 Next, guys, is financial.
00:16:01.680 Now, my background is financial planning.
00:16:04.180 A lot of you guys know that and just this past week and a half, two weeks, I updated our estate planning documents.
00:16:12.480 So this is our wills, our trust, advanced care directives, financial power of attorney, all of that stuff I wanted to make sure was taken care of, was updated.
00:16:21.920 My wife and I are going on a trip next week.
00:16:24.460 So I want to make sure that all of that stuff is taken care of should something unfortunate and unexpected happen to us.
00:16:31.220 We want to have those things taken care of.
00:16:32.840 So guys, basic, basic stuff here, estate planning documents.
00:16:36.180 Again, that's a trust, that's a will, that's your advanced care directives, which is basically the way that you will be treated medically if you're incapacitated.
00:16:46.520 And then also your financial power of attorney, again, if you're incapacitated.
00:16:50.740 In addition to that, you want to have savings.
00:16:53.440 You want to have investments.
00:16:54.480 You want to be setting aside money from every single one of your paychecks.
00:16:59.160 I mean, heaven forbid you get injured and you can't work.
00:17:02.940 That also comes in play with insurance, disability insurance, health insurance, life insurance.
00:17:08.560 I mean, I think we have a moral obligation to provide for our family even after we're gone.
00:17:12.820 So having some of these insurances in place, life insurance, health, disability insurance in place is a very, very good idea to ensure that we're protecting those that we frankly have an obligation to protect.
00:17:23.920 So get your insurances in place, set money aside from every paycheck.
00:17:28.220 I mean, if you get disabled, you'll be taken care of.
00:17:30.240 If you get laid off, money will be there.
00:17:32.340 These are all very, very important strategies.
00:17:34.300 And again, I know I'm covering this from a 30,000 foot view and I'm really going through this fast.
00:17:39.860 That's the point.
00:17:40.520 I just want to get through this as fast as you can.
00:17:42.260 Again, you can go to orderofman.com slash prepare.
00:17:45.760 You could download this document.
00:17:48.080 It's a rough document, guys.
00:17:49.380 It's not all dolled up and pretty, but it'll give you a basic checklist of the things that you can score yourself on.
00:17:56.380 You know, maybe you're good in the financial department, but you could really use some use in the skillset department, which is what I wanted to talk about next.
00:18:02.800 Okay.
00:18:03.580 So skillsets.
00:18:04.940 And again, this is not the end all save all.
00:18:08.680 This is not everything that you could possibly cover.
00:18:11.160 It's just that basic list.
00:18:12.200 But the first thing that I put on here is firearms training.
00:18:15.460 Guys, know how to use a firearm, please.
00:18:17.900 Please, please, for the love, know how to use a firearm.
00:18:21.000 Now, do you need to own a firearm?
00:18:22.780 Do you need to shoot with it every single day?
00:18:26.040 No, to both of those.
00:18:27.560 I would say that it's a good idea to own a firearm in your house.
00:18:31.200 We have the right to own a firearm.
00:18:34.500 I think we ought to use that right.
00:18:37.060 And you're always going to be more comfortable with something that you understand.
00:18:40.780 I don't ever want to have to use my firearm outside of hunting.
00:18:44.440 But if that day comes where I have to defend myself, my family, my neighbors, my colleagues, my coworkers against some sort of threat, then I want to be sure that I know that I can handle myself and I can handle the tools at my disposal.
00:19:02.420 One of those tools being a firearm.
00:19:05.640 And there's a lot of people out there who think firearms are bad or they're scary.
00:19:09.460 I encourage every single one of you.
00:19:11.360 Now, most, probably 80 to 90 percent of you listening own a firearm.
00:19:15.180 You know how to use it.
00:19:16.480 You've used it in the past to train with.
00:19:19.040 And so you're fairly comfortable with it.
00:19:21.520 But there's probably 5 to 10 to maybe even 15 percent of you who have never even thought about this.
00:19:26.340 Guys, go out, go to a shooting range, find a qualified instructor.
00:19:31.040 Even if you don't purchase a firearm, know your way around one, know how to shoot one so you're not all freaked out if you ever come in contact with a firearm.
00:19:40.800 Okay, that's number one.
00:19:41.540 Number two, martial arts.
00:19:43.300 Some sort of martial arts.
00:19:44.960 This could be Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which is huge, obviously, right now.
00:19:48.720 It could be karate.
00:19:49.800 It could be Krav Maga.
00:19:51.740 I mean, there's so many different boxing, wrestling, so many different components to this.
00:19:56.540 And there isn't one that's the best.
00:19:59.060 All right.
00:19:59.220 I know the jiu-jitsu guys will say it's better than the wrestling and the wrestling will say it's better than boxing.
00:20:03.080 And we have this like debate.
00:20:04.780 But there isn't one that's going to inoculate you against every possible circumstance in which you may find yourself.
00:20:10.980 But having some sort of skill set with administering physical violence to another individual and then being able to defend yourself against physical violence is always, always in your best interest.
00:20:24.140 And it's not only about the violence because it will also help you with the discipline component, with the mindset.
00:20:29.840 But at the end of the day, I think every single man out there, in order to fulfill his responsibility as protector, needs to learn some sort of martial art.
00:20:39.100 So we've got firearms training, we've got martial arts, and the third component of this is medical training.
00:20:44.000 You have to know some basic medical stuff.
00:20:46.280 If you came across an accident, could you help that individual who's bleeding or somebody who's in shock?
00:20:52.120 Could you at least, at a minimum, recognize what the symptoms are and what they may be experiencing that and then being able to communicate that or keep that individual safe and secure and frankly alive until proper medical help can get there?
00:21:04.160 But having medical training is really, really important.
00:21:07.700 So those are the skill sets, firearm training, martial arts, and medical training.
00:21:12.160 The next thing that I wrote down here is vehicle.
00:21:15.080 I mean, we spend a lot of time, some more than others, inside of our vehicles.
00:21:18.880 And so it's really, really important that we know how to use our vehicles, that we know how to our way around them.
00:21:26.540 So one thing that I think of is preventative maintenance.
00:21:29.200 So making sure that you're getting your oil change and you're getting the tunings and the tune-ups on the car, like making sure that your vehicle is running as best as it can.
00:21:39.800 I posted a picture of some of my shotguns the other day and somebody had made the comment.
00:21:45.160 He's like, wow, those look brand new.
00:21:46.900 One of them is, I think, two months old, so it's pretty new.
00:21:50.820 The other I've had for 10 years and another one I've had for three years.
00:21:55.280 And these things look brand new.
00:21:57.160 Why? Because I take care of them.
00:21:59.900 I take care of my firearms the way they need to be taken care of.
00:22:03.160 I do the same thing with the tools in my shop.
00:22:05.720 And I do the same thing with my truck.
00:22:08.880 I keep it clean inside.
00:22:10.320 I keep it washed down.
00:22:11.560 I don't have a bunch of extra stuff in there.
00:22:13.740 I know the manual.
00:22:14.920 I know how to change the tire.
00:22:18.140 I didn't until just recently when I had a flat tire about two months ago.
00:22:22.080 I didn't even know where the jack was or how to drop the tire from underneath.
00:22:26.260 And so it took me a little longer than it should have.
00:22:28.860 But that was a good reminder that I need to know how to do this.
00:22:31.600 So having the preventative maintenance done and then understanding your vehicle is really,
00:22:36.720 really important, including all the equipment.
00:22:38.320 So that's jumper cables.
00:22:40.340 That's knowing where the jack is.
00:22:41.980 That's knowing how to change the tire.
00:22:43.380 Knowing just some basic, basic mechanical skills that may help you should you get stuck or broke
00:22:48.900 down somewhere.
00:22:49.840 Okay.
00:22:51.040 And then we've got the preventative maintenance.
00:22:52.520 And then the third component of this is having an emergency bag.
00:22:55.280 I love having an emergency bag in my truck.
00:22:57.700 Again, hope I never use it, but I've got a firearm in there.
00:23:01.040 I've got a couple of knives.
00:23:03.400 I've got some cash, small bills.
00:23:05.480 I've got some cash in there, basic medical supplies, and those things should hold me
00:23:10.580 over.
00:23:10.900 Should I find myself in a, in a bad way in some situation?
00:23:13.940 So that's what I had to say for vehicle.
00:23:15.980 And then guys, the last thing that I wanted to talk with you about today is, and I just
00:23:20.020 titled this, uh, others as important as it is for us to have these five areas locked down.
00:23:28.800 And again, some of the other areas that maybe I didn't address, it's very, very important
00:23:32.780 that we're teaching other people how to take care of themselves, specifically the people
00:23:37.960 that we have a responsibility for.
00:23:39.320 So that could be our wife, uh, our children, it could be our coworkers and the people that
00:23:44.960 we are maybe in a church congregation, understanding and making sure that they understand how to
00:23:51.000 take care of themselves is also part of your responsibility as a leader.
00:23:54.560 So I think about, uh, communication.
00:23:57.720 Are you communicating with these individuals?
00:24:00.140 If something bad happens, natural disaster, break in fire, hurricane, whatever, uh, are
00:24:07.640 you guys all on the same page or is everybody going to be running around doing different
00:24:11.240 things?
00:24:11.580 Or do you know, okay, this is my job.
00:24:13.480 This is your job.
00:24:14.200 This is his job.
00:24:14.960 This is her job.
00:24:15.680 And everybody knows exactly what they need to be doing.
00:24:18.600 So communicating all of these things I talked about, for example, and I'll go back to a financial
00:24:23.940 as a financial advisor.
00:24:25.780 Uh, I would meet with widows occasionally and they would come to me and I felt so bad
00:24:30.840 about this because these women, they didn't know anything about their finances.
00:24:35.900 They had no clue about where their accounts were, how much money they had, no clue, no
00:24:40.580 idea how to balance their, their budget and their checkbook.
00:24:44.380 They just had no idea how to do these things because husband had been taking care of it for
00:24:49.340 so long that she didn't worry about it.
00:24:52.120 She didn't have to worry about it.
00:24:53.340 And so she absolved herself of any responsibility for the finances.
00:24:56.800 And now that he's gone, she's finding herself in a position where she's got to take care
00:25:01.940 of it, but she just doesn't know how to do it.
00:25:04.340 So I kind of blame those situations, not only on her, cause I think she should be involved
00:25:08.840 to some degree, but also on husband, right?
00:25:11.320 Like he's got to be able to communicate this stuff.
00:25:13.740 It's his responsibility.
00:25:15.220 Sure.
00:25:15.320 To take care of some of these things, but he needs to ensure that if something happens,
00:25:19.440 like he's gone and out of the picture that his wife is going to be okay financially.
00:25:24.460 And this all comes down to communication.
00:25:26.600 You may have done a great job in each one of these areas.
00:25:29.420 You may download this worksheet and check everyone off.
00:25:32.640 Hey, I'm perfect on every one of those.
00:25:34.240 And yet if the people in your lives don't understand any of the stuff that you're talking
00:25:38.180 about, I think you're selling yourself short and you're selling them short as well.
00:25:41.840 So communicating those things.
00:25:43.060 Uh, number two, helping them develop the skills that I just talked with you about.
00:25:47.220 So going out, shooting guns together, uh, doing martial arts together, going through
00:25:51.260 medical training.
00:25:51.920 I have my children change tires with me because I want them to understand how to change a tire.
00:25:56.940 Um, my wife and I, and our family were on a walk the other night and it was cold.
00:26:00.800 It was cold.
00:26:01.560 It started snowing as we were on our walk.
00:26:03.240 And we came to this, uh, this corner and I looked around the corner and there was two women
00:26:08.340 who were standing on the sidewalk near a car and there was two boys and they were boys.
00:26:13.220 They were probably between the ages of 12 to 15, I would say.
00:26:16.340 And these two boys were there changing these women's car tire.
00:26:21.980 And I thought to myself, you know, how cool is that?
00:26:24.920 That these young men know how to change a tire or if they don't, that the, that the women
00:26:30.260 are making them do it and learn how to change the tire.
00:26:33.320 And so these boys were out there in the dirt and the gutter of the street.
00:26:36.320 Uh, it was started to snow.
00:26:38.080 I went over there.
00:26:38.980 I asked if I could have any help, if I could be in help.
00:26:41.160 And, and the women said, no, they got it, which I also thought was cool, but you've got
00:26:45.820 to be able to teach these types of skills and allow the people that you have a responsibility
00:26:50.620 for an obligation for to learn these skills as well.
00:26:54.180 And then the last component of this is responsibilities.
00:26:56.700 And I think I kind of alluded to this a little bit with regards to communication, but everybody
00:27:01.440 in the Michler family is part of a team.
00:27:04.220 And when you're part of a team, it means that you have a responsibility.
00:27:08.560 And if you want to be on the team, then you have to uphold your responsibility.
00:27:13.760 You have to be a good team member.
00:27:16.220 Dad doesn't do everything.
00:27:17.960 Mom doesn't do everything.
00:27:19.660 We have very clear and defined roles.
00:27:21.360 Now that doesn't mean that we can't help each other out from time to time, but we have very,
00:27:25.480 very clearly defined roles.
00:27:27.500 And my children know in an emergency, here's where we meet.
00:27:31.000 Here's the exits that we use.
00:27:32.560 Here's the priority of exits that we use.
00:27:34.620 My older boys, they know where my firearm is.
00:27:37.140 They know how to shoot a firearm.
00:27:39.020 They know in what situation they need to do what they know how to use my phone.
00:27:42.480 They know how to unlock my phone so they could call and make an emergency call to the authorities.
00:27:47.040 Should they need to do that?
00:27:48.500 These are very, very important responsibilities that you have to give to your children.
00:27:53.060 And of course, it's going to vary based on age and maturity level, but something, everybody
00:27:58.100 can do something, right?
00:27:59.660 Everybody in the household can do something.
00:28:02.140 Even my two-year-old can do something if I communicate it with him and allow him to be
00:28:07.720 part of the team, which is not only good for us, it's good for him as an individual.
00:28:12.240 So guys, that's my list.
00:28:14.000 All right, buy windshield wipers before it rains.
00:28:18.060 Don't wait for a natural disaster.
00:28:20.120 Don't wait for an emergency or a medical condition or a layoff or a divorce or any number of things
00:28:27.240 that could happen to us on a daily basis as men.
00:28:30.940 Do not wait for those things.
00:28:32.460 Go out into the world, prepare yourself against the unknown and the uncertain.
00:28:38.500 And I'll read this quote here to you again, as David Gilmore says,
00:28:41.360 the real man gains renown by standing between his family and destruction.
00:28:45.760 Again, family could be broader than that as well.
00:28:48.020 Absorbing the blows of fate with equanimity.
00:28:51.040 So guys, I hope this helps.
00:28:52.960 Again, the resource is available at orderofman.com slash prepare.
00:28:57.780 You can download this very rough worksheet, see where you stand, see how you're doing.
00:29:02.760 Maybe you have some additional things that you want to add into here, but this is your job.
00:29:06.720 This is your job.
00:29:07.640 I know a lot of the times we talk about this 30,000 foot view, this high level stuff, and
00:29:11.500 it's wonderful.
00:29:12.120 It's important, it's critical, but getting down to the nitty gritty, getting down into
00:29:16.800 the tactical steps that we need to take in order to ensure we're doing what we need to
00:29:21.200 be doing is critical.
00:29:22.720 And this is a huge, huge component of it.
00:29:24.600 So again, orderofman.com slash prepare, download this worksheet, see where you stand, add what
00:29:29.660 you need, improve where you're falling short and be the type of man that your family and
00:29:34.820 your community and your business and your colleagues and coworkers are relying upon you
00:29:39.300 to be don't wait for a natural disaster.
00:29:42.160 Don't wait for a dark day.
00:29:43.660 Don't hope that somebody else is going to do it.
00:29:46.420 You be the man you prepare, you be able to deal with these types of situations.
00:29:51.500 So guys, I'll leave you there today.
00:29:52.880 Again, orderofman.com slash prepare.
00:29:54.900 You can download this list.
