00:00:00.000 You're a man. You're committed to the work required to forge your own destiny.
00:00:04.600 Your blood. Your sweat. Your tears.
00:00:07.920 You will not be defeated. You cannot be deterred.
00:00:11.480 Nothing stands between you and the victory you seek.
00:00:14.640 You're a rock. Steadfast, resolute, and unwavering.
00:00:18.420 And, at the end of the day, the job will be done.
00:00:22.400 Welcome to your Friday Field Notes.
00:00:24.420 Men, what is going on today? My name is Ryan Michler, and I am the host and founder of Order of Men.
00:00:30.140 Welcome back to those of you who have been here before.
00:00:32.360 If you haven't been here before, keep in mind that this Friday show is a short show we do each and every Friday.
00:00:38.100 It's called the Friday Field Notes. It's usually about 5 to 10 minutes of my ramblings for the week.
00:00:42.300 But we also have a full-length show released each Tuesday where we interview the world's experts and authorities on the topics of health and finances and relationships and leadership, self-defense,
00:00:52.240 basically anything else important to you as a man.
00:00:54.980 So, make sure you subscribe to our show so you never miss an episode.
00:00:58.800 Now, I don't mess around here on these shows because, like I said, I only have a limited amount of time, 5 to 10 minutes, so I just want to jump right into it.
00:01:05.800 Today, I want to talk about discipline.
00:01:07.660 Now, in our closed Facebook group, which you can find at facebook.com slash groups slash order of men,
00:01:13.560 I ask the 3,900 guys there what their biggest struggles are as men.
00:01:18.860 And more often than not, I hear that self-discipline is the biggest concern.
00:01:24.180 In other words, their inability to accomplish what they want and what they know they should be doing.
00:01:30.980 Look, I get it. For a long time, I was very undisciplined.
00:01:34.020 In fact, there are certain elements of my life where I still am, but it's a continual process for me and I found some things that work.
00:01:40.200 So, today, I want to talk with you about some of these key concepts as to why discipline is so important to have and then how you can build more of it in your life.
00:01:49.640 And first and foremost, I think it's important when it comes to discipline that we talk about the mindset.
00:01:54.160 The reality is that when we get our minds right about something, anything in life, it leads us to making some choices.
00:01:59.880 Those choices lead to action. Those actions lead to results.
00:02:03.660 So, if we want the results in our life, in any area of our life, health, wealth, relationships, whatever, we need to work on the mindset piece first.
00:02:12.420 And when it comes to discipline and the mindset to have more of that in your life, it's really a matter of commitment.
00:02:17.460 Are you committed? I mean, like, literally 100% committed to whatever it is you're setting out to do.
00:02:24.380 If you're not, you're going to continue to give yourself a way out of everything you say you're going to do.
00:02:29.540 And in order to get committed, you need to have two things.
00:02:33.460 First, you need to be very clear about what it is you want.
00:02:37.000 Do you want a better relationship? Do you want more money?
00:02:39.340 If you want more money, how much? Do you want to be in better shape?
00:02:42.180 What does that look like to you? What? What is it that you want?
00:02:44.920 And without knowing that, it really doesn't matter what you do throughout your day.
00:02:48.540 It doesn't matter if you have discipline or not.
00:02:50.180 Now, if you want a cool resource that I personally use to map out my day and what I hope to accomplish in any given day, you can go to orderofman.com slash weekly planner.
00:03:00.660 So it's orderofman.com slash weekly planner.
00:03:02.920 And you can get the exact spreadsheet that I use to map out each and every day.
00:03:07.120 I call it my battle plan.
00:03:08.100 So go check that out when you have a second orderofman.com slash weekly planner.
00:03:11.960 Now, once you know that, once you know what you want, then you can focus on the second piece, which is the why.
00:03:17.080 And this is extremely valuable.
00:03:18.860 If you don't know why you want it, whatever it is in your life, you will drift off course.
00:03:24.420 I'll give you an example of this.
00:03:25.780 Many of you, if you've been listening to the podcast, I've heard this before.
00:03:28.380 But three years ago, I was so out of shape.
00:03:31.160 I was fat.
00:03:32.080 I was lazy.
00:03:32.740 I was miserable.
00:03:33.840 And I realized that I could not be fully present from my job or my wife or my kids.
00:03:39.560 I just could not be fully present.
00:03:43.240 And I remember coming home from work one day and my sons asked me to play.
00:03:47.540 I had to look them in the eye and tell them that I couldn't.
00:03:50.400 I literally could not.
00:03:51.800 I was exhausted and it all stemmed from my poor habits, really my lack of habits over the previous several years.
00:03:58.440 And that's the moment that I fully committed.
00:04:01.220 A hundred percent.
00:04:02.100 I committed to getting back in shape.
00:04:03.740 My why was that I wanted to be fully present for my children and for my wife.
00:04:08.140 And without that why, it would have been very easy for me to revert back to the way things were.
00:04:13.660 And I will not let that happen again, guys.
00:04:16.100 I won't let it happen again because my why is strong enough to keep me going to the gym or going running, even if I don't want to actually do it.
00:04:25.680 So let's assume now that you've got your head straight about this discipline thing.
00:04:29.820 Let's assume you know what you want.
00:04:31.360 You've got a clear why.
00:04:32.680 Now what do you do next?
00:04:34.340 It's a matter of building habits into your day.
00:04:36.860 That's it.
00:04:37.980 We're going to get more into how to execute in a minute, but for now, just focus on the habits.
00:04:42.140 What habits you're going to be implementing and then where in your day are you going to be implementing them?
00:04:47.320 So again, if you're trying to get back in better shape, what workouts are you going to do?
00:04:50.500 Are you going to go to the gym?
00:04:51.580 Are you going to go running?
00:04:52.660 What programs are you going to use?
00:04:53.980 What days and times will you be exercising?
00:04:56.180 If you're talking about building wealth, what days and time of the day are you going to track your finances?
00:05:00.260 What program are you going to be used to track in them?
00:05:02.240 How are you going to invest on a regular basis?
00:05:04.360 If you're trying to improve in your relationships with your wife, when are you going to take her on a date each week?
00:05:09.860 When are you going to have conversations and connect with her?
00:05:12.040 I know it sounds strange in this case, but mapping out your week is critical because if you map out what and when you're going to do something, you're more likely to do it.
00:05:20.160 Now, some of these questions are going to be difficult to answer, especially if we're talking about in a five to 10 minute podcast.
00:05:25.480 But if you want to know some more information about this, you want some more resources, you want to ask these questions, you want to figure out what other guys are doing.
00:05:32.980 Go to our Facebook group.
00:05:34.280 It's facebook.com slash groups slash order of man.
00:05:37.300 And you can ask those questions there.
00:05:38.800 Now, once you do these things long enough, guys, it's no longer a matter of discipline.
00:05:43.060 It's just a habit.
00:05:44.220 Do you think that it takes discipline, for example, to brush your teeth?
00:05:47.200 I hope not.
00:05:48.100 Now, you've been doing it long enough now that it's become a habit.
00:05:51.280 It's strange and foreign to you if you don't brush your teeth, right?
00:05:54.860 So if you want a great resource on building habits, check out the book, The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg.
00:05:59.660 It's a great book.
00:06:00.620 I highly recommend it.
00:06:01.640 I've read it multiple times.
00:06:03.180 All right.
00:06:03.400 So now we've got our mind right.
00:06:05.020 Our habits are in place.
00:06:06.180 Now you need to eliminate barriers and obstacles.
00:06:09.860 And you do this by planning beforehand and anticipating things that would keep you from
00:06:14.460 accomplishing what you set out to do.
00:06:16.240 So if you don't plan ahead of time, you will get caught up in the moment and you're going
00:06:21.000 to lose that discipline, especially in the early stages of creating systems and routines
00:06:25.960 in your life.
00:06:26.720 So a prime example, when I was getting back into shape, it was difficult for me to get out
00:06:31.220 of bed when my alarm went off.
00:06:32.480 And this was just a simple change of moving my alarm away from my nightstand.
00:06:38.020 And when I didn't know what workout I was going to do when I woke up, I was less likely
00:06:41.980 to go to the gym.
00:06:42.760 The solution for that was simple.
00:06:44.120 It was just planning out my workouts the night before.
00:06:46.560 Whatever you do now to eliminate the barriers and hurdles to accomplish what you want to accomplish,
00:06:51.400 the better off you guys are going to be.
00:06:54.000 So if you know you need to study or to do some reading, set up a quiet place in your
00:06:58.780 house specifically reserved for reading, have your book already there and open to the page
00:07:03.420 that you're going to read.
00:07:04.440 Eliminate the barriers and you'll be more likely to do it.
00:07:07.500 All right.
00:07:07.680 And the last point I want you guys to understand is that at times in your life, you're going
00:07:12.140 to revert.
00:07:12.800 It's not the end of the world.
00:07:14.560 It happens to the best of us.
00:07:15.760 Don't beat yourself up about it, but don't let the problem compound by reverting over and
00:07:20.180 over and over again.
00:07:21.640 Dust yourself off, recommit, get your mind right, build out your day, eliminate the
00:07:26.700 barriers, and you're going to be set.
00:07:28.460 Do that long enough and you will build the discipline in your life.
00:07:31.660 So there you have it guys, a quick and easy guide to building discipline.
00:07:35.000 Again, it's commit, figure out your why, build out the habits, eliminate the barriers, and
00:07:41.920 redo it if you fall off the horse now and again.
00:07:44.460 So I hope that's been helpful for you.
00:07:46.440 I know that discipline has been a huge part of the success that I've had in my relationships
00:07:50.960 and my fitness and my wealth building, and I know it's going to be a huge part of your
00:07:55.420 success if you build that discipline in your life.
00:07:58.300 If you want to know more about how to do that, you need to check out our elite mastermind,
