00:00:19.760 At the end of the day, and after all is said and done, you can call yourself a man.
00:00:25.200 Gentlemen, what is going on today? My name is Ryan Michler and I am the host and the founder of Order of Man.
00:00:29.360 Whether you are tuning in for the first time or you've been here for a couple of years,

00:00:46.040 So today is Friday. You are listening to our Friday Field Notes,
00:00:48.580 which is roughly 10 minutes of my thoughts, my ideas, insights, inspirations from throughout the week.
00:00:53.380 But if you're not already subscribed to the show,
00:00:55.500 you need to know that we also have an interview show that is released each Tuesday.
00:00:59.360 Today, where I interview the world's most successful men on the planet,
00:01:02.800 warriors, athletes, authors, entrepreneurs,
00:01:05.720 basically anyone who's going to help you become a better man.
00:01:07.940 In fact, this Tuesday, we had Tim Kennedy, a UFC middleweight ranked fighter
00:01:11.820 and a Green Beret on the show to talk about becoming a sheepdog, 0.95
00:01:15.420 which is something I think all of us need to consider improving on in our lives.
00:01:19.060 It was the highest daily downloaded podcast since I started podcasting roughly two years ago.
00:01:23.560 So make sure you check it out and make sure you subscribe so you never miss an episode.
00:01:27.800 Now, with all that said and done, I want to talk with you for a couple of minutes today
00:01:31.300 about the concept of high value targets.
00:01:33.800 Focusing on high value targets in your life is critical to your success this year.
00:01:38.560 And the reality is that most of us don't do it.
00:01:41.200 Instead, we choose to focus on low value targets, tactics, activities, projects, experiences
00:01:46.100 that produce little or even no results towards our most important objectives.
00:01:51.240 But a high value target, on the other hand, is a tactic.
00:01:54.460 It's an exercise.
00:01:55.520 It's an activity, an engagement that you can complete that will produce and yield the highest return.
00:02:02.180 And this is exactly what we want.
00:02:03.520 High returns on the way we spend our time and our attention, our focus, energy, resources, all of it.
00:02:09.540 And I've said it before, but the most successful men on the planet know how to use the 24 hours
00:02:14.060 each of us have in any given day to its maximum potential.
00:02:18.080 And that's what I want to address with you today.
00:02:19.680 Now, obviously, the term high value target is a term that's used in the military.
00:02:23.560 And it's used to describe a person or an asset that's critical for the completion of a mission.
00:02:29.760 But I'm using it in much of the same way.
00:02:31.760 A high value target when it comes to you spending time most effectively is a tactic.
00:02:37.400 All right.
00:02:37.580 It's a tactic that you can use to achieve your ultimate objectives.
00:02:41.460 So I want to talk with you about identifying what these high value targets look like,
00:02:45.500 engaging these high value targets, eliminating the distractions, and then accomplishing, of
00:02:50.040 course, the big things in your life and the things that you set out to accomplish this
00:02:53.160 year.
00:02:53.400 So the first step in identifying high value targets is to know what it is you actually
00:02:59.360 want.
00:02:59.720 See, most people take such a sporadic approach.
00:03:02.400 I look around in society today and they're just so sporadic towards the goals that they
00:03:06.560 have.
00:03:06.900 Most people have no idea what they actually want.
00:03:09.380 And if they have any idea in the first place, their goals are so broad.
00:03:12.280 They're so vague.
00:03:13.220 They're overgeneralized.
00:03:14.780 They'll say things like, I want to be happy.
00:03:16.820 I want to make more money.
00:03:17.700 I want to be a better dad.
00:03:18.640 I want to have a better relationship.
00:03:19.860 Great.
00:03:20.140 Welcome to the club.
00:03:20.840 But what does any of that even mean?
00:03:23.060 If you can't get crystal clear with your objectives, you have no chance in achieving big
00:03:27.740 things this year.
00:03:28.600 So what does happiness actually look like?
00:03:31.300 How do you define it?
00:03:32.060 How much money do you want to make doing what?
00:03:34.400 How do you measure being a better dad?
00:03:36.800 How would your kids describe it?
00:03:38.020 How exactly do you want a better relationship?
00:03:40.240 Is it more conversations, more dates, more sex?
00:03:42.900 This is what I'm talking about.
00:03:44.120 Crystal clear.
00:03:45.740 And then next you've got to start thinking about how.
00:03:48.080 Step one, identifying objectives is the what.
00:03:50.280 But step two, prioritizing tactics is about the how.
00:03:54.120 How are you going to improve your relationships?
00:03:56.140 How are you going to make more money?
00:03:57.700 How are you going to connect with your kids?
00:03:59.400 How are you going to start that business?
00:04:00.780 Start writing down every single step, strategy, idea, activity that you could possibly engage
00:04:07.980 in in order to accomplish your objectives.
00:04:10.520 And then once you've done that, consider which tactics are going to yield the highest result.
00:04:15.440 Will phone calls or emails get better results with regards to your sales?
00:04:20.260 Will flowers or words of affirmation get you better results with your wife?
00:04:24.280 By the way, guys, that's a reference to the five love languages, which you'll want to read
00:04:28.040 if you're trying to improve your relationship.
00:04:30.340 But will a half hour of undivided attention or even a handwritten note help you connect
00:04:34.720 with your kids more effectively?
00:04:36.140 Now, I know you might be thinking that you don't know how to identify what's most important.
00:04:40.440 Sometimes we don't know what we don't know.
00:04:41.960 So I would suggest you do this.
00:04:43.900 Ask somebody who's already experiencing the results that you want to experience what you
00:04:48.820 should do.
00:04:49.240 And this is where coaching comes into play.
00:04:51.160 We've talked about this before.
00:04:52.540 Next, you could look at your track record.
00:04:54.800 What is it that you're already doing?
00:04:56.220 And is it even working?
00:04:57.080 If it is, keep doing it.
00:04:58.260 If it's not, maybe it's time to mix it up.
00:05:00.260 You could ask people who have a vested interest in your objective, your kids, your wife, your
00:05:04.360 co-workers, your employees, what they would like to see or suggest.
00:05:08.120 A research up on successful people and mimic exactly what they're already doing.
00:05:12.520 The point here is that you don't need to reinvent the wheel if you don't know what you're doing.
00:05:16.980 Just do what other people have done, the others that have paved the way, and do that.
00:05:21.380 Simple.
00:05:22.120 So you know what you want.
00:05:23.720 You know what you need to do to get there.
00:05:25.140 Now it's a matter of taking action, but also it's a matter of eliminating distractions.
00:05:30.560 It is so easy to get consumed with the things that don't matter.
00:05:34.640 The tabloids, gossip, social media disagreements, trolls, magazines, TV shows, what celebrity
00:05:40.780 is doing what, what athlete has a scandal going on right now, even politics to a large degree.
00:05:45.460 And I'd be willing to bet that if you actually went through your day and inventoried how you
00:05:49.740 spent every minute of each day and you did that for a week, you would be shocked at how
00:05:55.080 you're spending your time.
00:05:56.020 Most of us think that we are more productive than we actually are.
00:05:59.300 Most of us think we're more efficient or that we're more successful than we really are.
00:06:03.020 And until you actually get a bearing on where things really stand, you're going to continue
00:06:07.460 to fool yourself into thinking you're getting the job done when in all reality, you're not,
00:06:11.940 or you're just not doing it as efficiently as you could be.
00:06:13.980 So guys, at this point, you have to remove the temptation, the temptation to cheat, to
00:06:20.560 shortcut, to skip steps.
00:06:22.880 You have to remove the temptation to engage in the destructive habits that you and I hold
00:06:28.640 dear in our lives.
00:06:29.460 You have to remove the desire to engage in arguments and disagreements and negativity that
00:06:35.400 is actually moving you away from your goal, not closer to it.
00:06:38.580 And the first step in overcoming the enemy is to actually recognize that there is an enemy
00:06:43.640 Steven Pressfield calls this the resistance.
00:06:46.500 And then the last step is to evaluate.
00:06:49.060 You've got to evaluate results.
00:06:50.800 It's easy to plan.
00:06:51.620 It's easy to think about how you might go about accomplishing your objectives.
00:06:54.540 But the question is, did any of your planning and any of your action even work?
00:06:59.080 You may have failed.
00:07:00.500 You may have been really busy, but you didn't actually get anything done.
00:07:05.100 I think we've talked about this at length, so I'm not going to get too much into this at
00:07:08.220 this point, but I will tell you this.
00:07:09.820 After every exercise, project, engagement, conversation, and day, you should be asking
00:07:15.680 yourself five very simple questions so that you can ensure you are more effective and engaging
00:07:21.680 in the highest value targets moving forward.
00:07:24.180 And the five questions are this.
00:07:25.520 Number one, what did I accomplish?
00:07:27.840 Number two, what didn't I accomplish?
00:07:30.040 I set out to do something.
00:07:31.520 Did I actually get it done?
00:07:32.920 Number three, what did I do well?
00:07:35.660 Number four, what didn't I do well?
00:07:37.860 And number five, how will I improve moving forward?
00:07:40.480 I know it might sound trivial, but this formula and even those five questions that I just gave
00:07:44.540 you are critical in identifying and executing on the highest value targets towards your objectives.
00:07:50.760 And they're critical in helping you maximize the limited amount of time and energy that
00:07:55.180 we have in any given day.
00:07:56.480 So if you're going to exert any amount of energy, time, money, resources, don't you want
00:08:03.420 to do it in a way that will yield the maximum results?
00:08:06.100 So guys, that's all I have for you today.
00:08:08.420 The four steps, again, identify objectives, prioritize tactics, eliminate distractions,
00:08:14.620 and evaluate your results.
00:08:16.500 If you want to delve into this type of planning a little deeper and want a brotherhood who
00:08:20.280 will hold you accountable to sticking to this strategy and actually doing what you've been
00:08:24.020 talking about doing, I invite you to join our elite mastermind, the Iron Council.
00:08:28.460 This is a collection, a group, a society, a tribe, a brotherhood of men who are working
00:08:33.720 on their own objectives, but they also have an interest in helping you reach your objectives
00:08:38.620 too.
00:08:39.400 Of course, there's a lot more that goes into the Iron Council, but for now, we'll focus
00:08:42.520 on that.
