00:00:00.000 You're a man of action. You live life to the fullest. Embrace your fears and boldly chart
00:00:05.000 your own path. When life knocks you down, you get back up one more time. Every time.
00:00:10.440 You are not easily deterred or defeated. Rugged. Resilient. Strong. This is your life. This is who
00:00:17.240 you are. This is who you will become. At the end of the day, and after all is said and done,
00:00:22.800 you can call yourself a man. Gentlemen, what is going on today? My name is Ryan Michler,
00:00:27.500 and I am the host and the founder of the podcast you're listening to right now, The Order of Man.
00:00:32.060 Guys, you are going to have to forgive me today. I'm a little under the weather, but I wanted to
00:00:35.780 have this conversation with you. It's really important that we do. I have not missed a podcast
00:00:40.220 since we started over two years ago now, which is crazy to think about. So here I am a little under
00:00:47.240 the weather, but I'm here nonetheless. My goal, guys, is to help us all become better men, better
00:00:52.760 leaders in our communities, better business owners, better entrepreneurs, better fathers,
00:00:56.640 better husbands, just better men in general. So each and every week, we bring on the world's
00:01:01.280 most successful men from New York Times bestselling authors to warriors, to athletes, entrepreneurs,
00:01:07.440 anybody that we feel like might have a message to share with you about becoming the man that you
00:01:12.200 want to be. But we also have the show that you're listening to right now, our Friday Field Notes,
00:01:16.700 where you get to listen to me for the next 10 minutes or so on some things that I've been
00:01:19.500 thinking about throughout the week. So if you are new to the show, I just want to invite you to
00:01:25.020 subscribe to this show. And while you're there, if you would, please leave us a rating and review
00:01:29.960 so we can keep doing what we're doing here at The Order of Men. And before I dive into the subject
00:01:34.200 to today, I just want to give a quick shout out to one of our members, JC Borg, who actually helped
00:01:38.900 me come up with a topic, which if you notice the title of this podcast, you saw that this show is
00:01:43.580 titled Like Sheep to the Slaughter. What do I mean by this? What do I mean when I say sheep to the
00:01:48.420 slaughter? What I mean is that I think that there is a tendency for men and women in society
00:01:53.680 today to put a blindfold on, to blindly follow other people, to go with the status quo, and
00:02:00.100 frankly, to do what everybody else is doing. There's a lot of reasons that I think that we do this,
00:02:05.340 but at the end of the day, that pack or herd mentality is designed. It's literally designed
00:02:12.540 to keep us safe and to keep us alive. It's been programmed into us since the dawn of man,
00:02:18.260 that if we stick together, that we'll survive. And I know that there's probably some truth in
00:02:23.520 certain circumstances to that, but I think it's become less and less relevant. I'm not suggesting
00:02:28.440 though that we don't stick together. I'm not suggesting that we shouldn't find people that
00:02:33.500 we can rally around and also people who can rally around us. But I do believe there is a danger in
00:02:39.700 following the pack without questioning where that pack is headed. And that's exactly what I want to
00:02:45.920 talk with you about today. I want to talk with you about the dangers. I want to talk with you about
00:02:49.880 a few tactical strategies that I've used that you can employ starting right now that are going to
00:02:56.100 allow you to become your own man, which is something I think all of us want. So let's talk about the
00:03:01.020 dangers of this herd mentality. First and foremost, I think it's important that we understand that we
00:03:07.060 don't always have a good idea. In fact, very rarely do we have a good idea of what the
00:03:12.360 quote unquote herd's motives are? Is the government, for example, really there to protect us? Is the
00:03:19.880 healthcare industry really there to heal us? Is it really even my intention to help you become
00:03:25.640 a better man? I know what they'd say. I know what I'd say. But unless you know with 100% certainty
00:03:32.040 what another party or institution or organization or person's motives are, I think it's important that
00:03:39.520 you approach every single interaction and every engagement that you have with a healthy dose of
00:03:45.100 skepticism. Next, there's this fake news. I'm not just talking about what you see on Facebook with
00:03:50.640 those clickbait titles, but what I'm talking about is everything from your friend's Instagram account to
00:03:57.080 the way people take pictures and how they talk about their life to the cars they drive to the houses
00:04:02.480 they live in. Are those stories, the stories that people are telling us really what's going on? A lot of
00:04:08.900 you know, for example, I'm a financial advisor. I can tell you from experience that there are a lot
00:04:13.880 of people who are driving some fancy cars. They're living in some big homes and they're going on some
00:04:20.260 exotic vacations that they really shouldn't be. They're up to their eyeballs in debt and they are
00:04:27.320 miserable, but they have to keep up that persona. They have to maintain that veneer. They want everybody
00:04:34.860 to think that they're happy when in all reality, they're anything but. Which leads me to talk about
00:04:41.940 this next point, misery. We've all heard the adage that misery loves company. It's true. I know a lot
00:04:48.880 of people who are miserable. There is absolutely nothing good about their life according to them.
00:04:54.580 And rather than trying to lift themselves out of it, they'd rather spend that time and energy
00:04:59.000 focused on dragging you down. And the catch is that sometimes it's really difficult. It's hard
00:05:05.280 for us to see and tell if somebody's miserable because they've got that persona I was talking
00:05:09.580 about to uphold. And I'm going to talk with you a little bit more about what you can do about that,
00:05:13.460 but understand that there are a lot of miserable people out there and they want you to be miserable
00:05:18.640 too. And the last point that I wanted to touch on is this oversensitive world that we are living in.
00:05:26.180 You cannot say anything without somebody getting upset or even crying foul. In fact,
00:05:31.800 somebody is probably going to be upset about this podcast and the fact that I use the word
00:05:36.440 slaughter because heaven forbid we remind anybody that human beings eat meat. It's absolutely
00:05:42.960 ridiculous. I'm not sure how far this goes, but I can tell you that I believe that part of the
00:05:49.180 reason we're so sensitive is because silent workers, silent workers are good workers. Society
00:05:56.860 does not want people to buck the system. It's the reason that we love the rebel in a movie so much.
00:06:03.020 It's because he's challenging the status quo and society or the government or an organization is
00:06:08.740 working so hard to keep him silent. Those entities, they don't want heroes. They want workers. They want
00:06:15.360 drones. They want robots. They want sheep. And the more silent you are, the more you conform,
00:06:21.700 the more profitable you are for them. So consider that next time you say something that you might
00:06:28.480 really think and feel, but it challenges the system. If you're put on blast for being a racist or a bigot
00:06:36.920 or a sexist or an extremist, maybe just maybe you'll think twice about opening your rebellious
00:06:43.460 mouth next time. And those are just a few of the symptoms and the reasons that I think we're
00:06:48.040 encouraged to sit down, to shut up, to play nice. So I want to talk with you about how you can avoid
00:06:54.220 being led away to this slaughterhouse. First and foremost, you have to know exactly what you want.
00:06:59.460 This is not new. I've talked about this at length before. If you don't, it's going to be easier
00:07:04.260 to lead you astray. What do you want in your business? What do you want in your fitness? What
00:07:09.420 do you want for your family? What do you want with your spirituality? What do you want exactly in every
00:07:14.660 aspect of your life? Very few people can answer that question, which is why we have so many sheep
00:07:19.900 and not enough independent thinkers. Men who can stand on their own two feet and say with certainty,
00:07:25.900 this is what I want. So knowing what that is will make it less and less likely that you're going to
00:07:31.640 be led to slaughter because you're going to be able to engage in this second point that I wanted
00:07:35.260 to make, which is learning to say no. It is critical, critical that you learn how to say no
00:07:40.000 and becoming your own man. Everybody wants you to say yes. Everyone wants you to do what they're
00:07:43.840 doing. I already told you why. Everyone wants you to conform, but because you now know exactly what
00:07:50.420 you want, you can have a very clear conscience when it comes to saying no to the things that are not
00:07:56.880 in line with what you're trying to accomplish. Next, qualify your sources. Where are you getting
00:08:03.660 your information? Are you getting it from people and from sources that aren't qualified to even give
00:08:10.240 you that advice? If you are, it's more likely that you'll be led away to a place that you do not want
00:08:14.800 to go. And too often we realize this before it's too late. You need to look for people who know what
00:08:20.660 they are doing. And more importantly, probably most importantly, are already experiencing the
00:08:26.300 results that you're after. And doing that will alleviate a lot of the chances of you being led
00:08:31.840 down the wrong path, but it's not going to completely remove that threat. That's why it's
00:08:35.400 important that you also approach everything with a healthy dose of skepticism. You should be questioning
00:08:41.420 everything. Everything that I'm saying on this podcast right now, you should be questioning
00:08:46.360 whether or not it's true. Is this really the way it is? Is this really what I want? Am I qualified
00:08:52.900 to even give you this advice? What is in it for me? What is in it for you when you give me a
00:08:57.920 recommendation? Now, I'm not telling you to be a cynic here, guys. There's a line that you should avoid
00:09:02.620 crossing because you don't want to turn into that bitter, angry old man. But you do want to know what
00:09:10.000 you're getting yourself into before you get yourself into it. And the last point that I want to make is
00:09:15.760 that you should always engage your mind in addition to your emotions. We as humans, we are emotional
00:09:21.320 creatures. You know that. I know that. We've been in emotional situations. Those emotions, guys,
00:09:26.640 they're there to serve us. They're there to help. But I know there's been a lot of times in my life
00:09:30.720 where my emotions have got the better of me because I wasn't willing to engage the six inches between my
00:09:37.940 ears, my brain for just a second and ask myself what was really happening in any given scenario.
00:09:45.760 Patience is a virtue. If you can't take a step back and evaluate and analyze what's actually
00:09:52.480 happening, you're going to get burned more often than you'd like to admit. Gentlemen, as I wrap
00:09:57.600 things up today, I just want you to know that we as men are supposed to lead. We're supposed to be
00:10:02.840 leaders. That's why I talk about presiding. It's leadership. But in order to do that, we have to be
00:10:08.080 able to think independently about what is going on around us. I know there's going to be times where
00:10:13.000 following is also required. But if you arm yourself with an understanding of people's motives,
00:10:19.920 their intentions, the tools that I talked about today, I think you're less likely to be led to the
00:10:25.800 slaughter. So if you want to learn more about becoming your own man, I want to invite you to join
00:10:31.260 our exclusive mastermind, the Iron Council. It's a bit of an oxymoron. I get it. This is a band of
00:10:36.080 brothers. I get that. But they're going to help you on your journey. This is important. We also
00:10:40.520 strive to give you the tools and the guidance and the resources that you'll need to determine what
00:10:46.600 you, what you want out of your life and how you can earn it. So if you want to learn more about that
00:10:53.140 and what's included in our mastermind, head to orderofman.com slash Iron Council. Guys, I look
00:10:59.120 forward to talking to you next week. But until then, take action and become your own man.
