You're a man of action. You live life to the fullest. Embrace your fears and boldly chart
00:00:05.000
your own path. When life knocks you down, you get back up one more time. Every time.
00:00:10.460
You are not easily deterred or defeated. Rugged. Resilient. Strong. This is your life. This is who
00:00:17.220
you are. This is who you will become. At the end of the day, and after all is said and done,
00:00:22.800
you can call yourself a man. Gentlemen, what is going on today? My name is Ryan Michler,
00:00:27.960
and I am the host and founder of this podcast, The Order of Man, and this movement, this movement
00:00:32.920
that has been going strong for three years now. And I can't tell you how excited I am about the
00:00:38.000
current trajectory that we're on. We're starting to hit this growth curve within the podcast and
00:00:42.680
the blog and the website and the Facebook group and the other social media platforms and the things
00:00:47.260
that we're sharing. And I'm so excited. It's so honored that you are joining us today. Now,
00:00:52.260
if you've been with us for any amount of time, you have a pretty good idea of what we're all about.
00:00:55.640
And that is this notion and this idea of reclaiming what it means to be a man, defining
00:01:00.440
what it means to be a man, and then reclaiming what it means to be a man. This is something that is
00:01:05.380
much, much needed in society. If you're joining us, you probably know, you're probably looking for
00:01:10.300
something that is going to help you become a better man, a better father, a better husband,
00:01:14.900
a better business owner, community leader, just a better man on every front and every facet of your
00:01:20.720
life. So we do this, your Friday field notes. We also have an interview show, which is released
00:01:25.460
each and every Tuesday where I am interviewing New York times, bestselling authors, warriors,
00:01:30.420
athletes, scholars, entrepreneurs, extremely, extremely successful men. We are extracting
00:01:36.500
their knowledge, their wisdom, their lessons, their experiences, and then we are delivering
00:01:41.060
them straight to you so that you can implement them in your life. That's on Tuesday today being Friday.
00:01:47.040
Again, this is our Friday field notes. I've got some thoughts today on adding fuel to the fire.
00:01:52.600
I mean, I see so many guys who have lost all of the fire inside of them. Maybe not all of it,
00:01:58.960
but a lot of it. And today we're going to talk about how adding fuel to the fire will help you
00:02:02.840
create the life that you want for yourself. And for those you have an obligation responsibility for
00:02:07.580
before I get into the subject of that, a couple of quick announcements. I've been mentioning the
00:02:13.040
store a little bit here and there. One of the things that we just came out with in the store
00:02:16.620
is our code of conduct poster. So I wrote a book called sovereignty, the battle for the hearts
00:02:21.260
and minds of men. And inside of that book, I illustrate 13 virtues that we as men ought to
00:02:27.260
consider adhering to. I call it the code of conduct. We just came out with a poster, the code of conduct
00:02:32.860
poster that illustrates those 13 virtues, the mindset as well, that goes with each of those
00:02:38.540
virtues so that you can have that as a physical reminder in your house or in your office or wherever
00:02:42.560
it may be. So with that and the hats and the shirts and the decals and patches and everything
00:02:49.220
else that we have going on, I'm sure that you'll find something over there. And what a great way to
00:02:52.600
support the movement of the order head to store.orderofman.com. And I know we've been talking
00:02:59.140
about this over the past couple of weeks or so, but if you are interested in jujitsu and training gear
00:03:04.620
and lifestyle apparel, and then their nutritional side and supplements, go check out what my friend,
00:03:11.060
Pete Roberts is doing with origin. Like I said, they've got the training gear, they've got the
00:03:15.580
lifestyle apparel, and they've got an amazing, amazing story when it comes to creating everything
00:03:21.700
in America. Everything that they offer is 100% American made. And you guys will not be disappointed
00:03:28.480
with the quality of the work they're doing. I've been taking their supplements lately. I do the krill
00:03:33.520
and I do the joint warfare, which is Jocko's joint warfare. Jocko and Pete are business partners.
00:03:39.520
And then they've also got discipline, which is a supplemental drink as well. And I do all three
00:03:44.440
of those. And I can tell you that they have made a visible, a noticeable improvement in my life.
00:03:49.280
So if you are interested, head to origin, Maine, Maine is in the state Maine. So origin,
00:03:54.080
maine.com slash order of man, and then use order O R D E R in all caps at checkout. And you'll get a
00:04:01.780
discount on your first order again, origin, maine.com slash order of man. All right, guys,
00:04:06.980
let's get into this. Let's talk about adding fuel to the fire. You know, I spend a lot of time talking
00:04:12.980
with men on a daily basis. And one thing I'm always intrigued by is this fire that I can see,
00:04:19.260
or in a lot of cases can't see simply by looking into a man's eyes. It's been said that the eyes are
00:04:26.160
the window to the soul. And if that's true, you can tell a lot about a man and his passion and
00:04:31.680
enthusiasm through a very quick glance and a connection of the eyes. And unfortunately,
00:04:37.200
all too often, what I see when I look is lifelessness, it's soullessness. It's a general
00:04:43.560
complacency and even signs of defeat. And I can certainly understand and even relate with that
00:04:49.940
feeling for a lot of years. I felt that exact same way. I do not feel that way anymore, but I did feel
00:04:55.440
that way. I occasionally look at old pictures of myself and I recognize a very defeated man when I
00:05:02.500
see him. And we've got to be real about this. We've got to face the fact that life is tough.
00:05:07.380
You know, it gets challenging, it gets routine and boring and monotonous. And what I experience more
00:05:13.600
often than not is men who allow those circumstances to defeat them. I think one of the biggest dangers in
00:05:21.120
society today is a lack of men who are passionate and fired up and engaged in creating a meaningful
00:05:28.000
life for themselves. And of course, for those people around them. And if you're one of those
00:05:32.180
guys who has lost his passion for life, I want you to have hope. The fire is still there. It's inside
00:05:39.360
of you. You just need to add a little fuel to it to get it stoked again. So what I thought I would do
00:05:43.820
today is share 10 strategies that you can implement in your life right now for adding fuel to the fire.
00:05:49.980
So get out your notepad. If you can, if you're running or driving or whatever it may be,
00:05:54.820
come back, check it out later. But here are 10 strategies again for adding fuel to the fire.
00:05:59.100
Number one, say yes. I just mentioned that life can get boring at times, but there's nobody that
00:06:05.880
says it has to be. So I want you to consider saying yes to some things that you might not normally say
00:06:10.760
yes to. As of the release of this recording, for example, I am hunting with some friends in Hawaii.
00:06:16.040
This is something I would have normally turned down because I'm quote unquote, too busy with life.
00:06:22.340
But this time I said yes. And I'm creating some incredible, incredible memories. You never know
00:06:28.380
unless you give it a try. So say yes to more. Number two, stop doing things that you hate.
00:06:34.100
Look, we all have to do things we don't like to do or don't want to do. I believe that's part of the
00:06:39.160
job of men. But if it has become the status quo, as opposed to the occasional rarity
00:06:44.960
or duty, you need to reevaluate what you're doing with your life. No one is forcing you to do
00:06:53.000
anything you don't want to do. You, you have imposed those limitations and restrictions on yourself.
00:06:59.300
So rather than doing all the things you hate, just stop, just stop doing those things. Or if they
00:07:05.140
have to get done, because I know that's probably what you're saying right now, if they do have to
00:07:09.120
get done, figure out a way to delegate those things to someone who is more suited to doing
00:07:15.080
those. Again, stop doing the things you hate. Number three, change your environment. This
00:07:20.360
suggestion goes hand in hand with the first one of saying yes to more. The simple fact is that
00:07:24.960
routines, they can be very, very powerful, but they can also be draining. Sometimes you've got to
00:07:30.940
break the mold and occasionally change your surroundings. If you're stuck in an office
00:07:34.960
all day, try going for a walk. Occasionally, that's one thing I do when I have to get on
00:07:38.860
the phone with people. I actually go outside and I walk while I'm talking with people because it
00:07:44.080
breaks up the grind. It breaks up the monotony. If you go to the same restaurants for every single
00:07:48.900
lunch, try a new restaurant. If you plop yourself on the couch every night before going to bed,
00:07:53.380
try going for a walk. Instead of that, these changes in the environment are going to provide you
00:07:58.900
with new experiences and more importantly, and I think this is really important, new perspectives
00:08:03.340
that you could draw upon moving forward. And again, re-engage and add fuel to that fire.
00:08:09.780
Number four, I think I'm on number four, exercise. I think this one goes without saying, but
00:08:15.320
it is a little counterintuitive. You've got to get your body moving. See, most people think that
00:08:20.340
exercise will drain you even further and it might, it might, especially if you haven't been working out
00:08:26.460
for years. But once your body gets used to moving and the fact that your mind is going to demand it
00:08:32.460
to move, it starts to crave that movement and build up the energy that you haven't experienced in years.
00:08:38.640
I know, for example, that every time I go into the gym and work out in the morning, I have a better day,
00:08:44.400
a more energetic day, and I'm a lot more productive throughout the next 24 hours.
00:08:49.980
Now, number five, go to bed earlier. So many men stay up late watching their favorite TV show or
00:08:56.500
doing whatever it is they do. And then they wonder why they're so drained in the morning and have no
00:09:01.740
desire to get out of bed. The body needs rest, guys. We hear these things like you can rest when
00:09:06.680
you're dead. Well, that's not true. The body needs rest. It needs to recover. And if it's not doing it
00:09:11.820
properly, your performance will suffer and you will not be able to gain or even sustain any type of
00:09:18.620
momentum in your life. I'll do another episode in the future on the power of sleep. But as soon as I
00:09:23.140
started to change my sleep habits and patterns, I was so much more energetic and so much more
00:09:28.180
productive. We'll get into the intricacies of creating an environment where you can maximize your rest.
00:09:33.900
But for now, you can listen to one of our interviews with Ted Rice. It's called Sleep Done Right.
00:09:40.000
And you can find it at orderofman.com slash zero seven one. All right. Number six, plan your day the
00:09:47.820
night before. Before you go to bed, plan out exactly what you're going to do the next morning.
00:09:53.640
What time are you going to wake up? What is your workout going to look like? What items do you need
00:09:57.960
to get accomplished? When I go to bed with a clear sense of direction and purpose for what I want to
00:10:03.260
accomplish the next day, the likelihood of me getting out of bed on time and getting after my day is
00:10:10.080
significantly lower. If on the other hand, I know exactly, exactly what I'm going to do. And I'm
00:10:17.320
excited about it. I find it significantly easier to jump out of bed when the alarm goes off and
00:10:22.200
attack the day. So plan your day the night before. Number seven, serve others. I see so many men
00:10:27.940
throwing pity parties for themselves. They get consumed with wallowing in their own self-pity.
00:10:33.520
And I don't want you to be that guy. I don't want to be that guy. I've never met a man who is actively
00:10:38.760
engaged, who simultaneously feel sorry for himself. If you're getting down on yourself,
00:10:43.740
go out and serve someone else. Volunteer to coach a youth team, feed the homeless,
00:10:49.720
mow a neighbor's yard, help a friend move, whatever it looks like. Do whatever you can to
00:10:54.460
be active and productive in helping other people thrive and succeed. And I believe that you will
00:11:00.600
inevitably thrive and succeed. Zig Ziglar said, help enough people get what they want and you will get
00:11:06.460
what you want. All right. Number eight, be alone. Guys, we don't spend enough time alone. And when I say
00:11:13.180
alone, I'm talking about by yourself, without anyone else, without any electronics, without any
00:11:18.840
distractions, I can't even begin to describe the power that comes from being alone with your mind
00:11:24.720
only, with your mind only and spending time just thinking about life. What do you want your life to
00:11:31.140
look like? What do you want to accomplish? What type of man do you need to become in order to accomplish
00:11:36.560
those things? I can name several times where, uh, I was working through some very, some sticky
00:11:42.680
situations. I simply went for a run without music or without any stimulus or without anybody else.
00:11:48.360
And I remember one time in particular, I made it about two miles before I turned around.
00:11:52.800
I ran home with new ideas, new insights, new perspectives that solve the problems that I had
00:11:59.080
found myself in. So spend more time alone. And on the opposite side of that is number nine. It's again,
00:12:05.340
completely opposite of that advice, but it's to borrow energy from other people. There are people
00:12:09.960
that I do not get along with, but, but there are others that I get so much excitement and energy from
00:12:17.120
just being around, spend more time around those people. If they energize you be around them. And if
00:12:23.860
they don't distance yourself, human beings are so much more connected than I think we know about.
00:12:29.980
And I fully believe that we have the ability to transfer energy to one another. All we have to
00:12:36.020
do is get within proximity with those that we are inspired by. And we will start to feel inspired too.
00:12:42.480
Now, the last one guys, and I, and I think I saved the best one for last year is to fight a battle.
00:12:47.280
You know, in his book, a wild at heart, uh, John Eldridge, and we did an interview with him as well
00:12:52.440
says deep in his heart, every man longs for a battle to fight, an adventure to live and a beauty to
00:12:58.240
rescue. And I want to address that, that first point, a battle to fight. Every man longs to fight a
00:13:04.920
battle. And I'm not talking about a physical battle necessarily, but a battle of his choosing.
00:13:10.060
My battle is the attack and dismissal of masculinity. That's what we're doing here with order of man.
00:13:14.580
You may have a different battle in mind, whatever it is, pursue it, engage the enemy, come up with a
00:13:21.220
course of action and then attack without purpose. I believe that fire burns out, but with a purpose
00:13:28.600
guys, with a purpose, you're adding fuel to the fire and it will burn bright guys. This is in no
00:13:34.760
way an exhaustive list. I mean, those are 10 very easy steps that you can use to add fuel to the fire
00:13:40.160
to get you started, to get you pointed in the right direction. Life doesn't have to be miserable.
00:13:44.780
That's just a choice. It's a choice that you get to make. The fire doesn't begin to rage overnight guys,
00:13:51.860
but over time, if you're willing to implement what I shared with you today and so many other
00:13:57.040
strategies that are out there, it will burn bright. Say yes more often. Stop doing things you hate,
00:14:04.060
change your environment, exercise, go to bed earlier, plan your day the night before,
00:14:09.140
serve other people, be alone, borrow energy. And that last one, fight a battle and you are well on
00:14:16.160
your way to adding fuel to the fire that will help you live the life that you're capable of living.
00:14:20.660
So gentlemen, those are my thoughts for you today on this Friday field notes. Again, I'm always glad
00:14:25.600
and always honored that you're here joining with us. We definitely need more men in the fight and I'm
00:14:30.580
honored to be standing shoulder to shoulder in the battle of my choosing. Now I want you to find a
00:14:35.500
battle of your choosing and find a way to add fuel to that fire. Until next week, gentlemen,
00:14:40.760
take action and become the man you are meant to be. Thank you for listening to the Order of Man
00:14:45.680
podcast. If you're ready to take charge of your life and be more of the man you were meant to be,
00:14:50.800
we invite you to join the order at orderofman.com.
