00:00:00.000 We don't want an easy life, as Bruce Lee would say.
00:00:03.600 We pray for the strength to endure a more difficult one.
00:00:08.280 And on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have people like David Goggins and other types
00:00:12.140 of people who say, you just got to make life as hard as possible.
00:00:15.080 I don't agree with that either.
00:00:16.760 There has to be purpose in the misery.
00:00:19.080 It has to have purpose behind it, a reason for doing what it is you're doing.
00:00:25.380 So a couple of questions that you can be asking yourself is number one, ask your skill on
00:00:29.760 a scale from one to 10.
00:00:31.000 Do you have purpose in your life?
00:00:32.480 You're a man of action.
00:00:34.160 You live life to the fullest, embrace your fears, and boldly chart your own path.
00:00:38.540 When life knocks you down, you get back up one more time, every time.
00:00:42.960 You are not easily deterred or defeated, rugged, resilient, strong.
00:00:48.000 This is your life.
00:00:49.140 This is who you are.
00:00:50.560 This is who you will become at the end of the day.
00:00:53.480 And after all is said and done, you can call yourself a man.
00:00:57.240 Gentlemen, welcome to the Order of Man podcast.
00:01:01.380 My name is Ryan Michler.
00:01:02.700 I'm your host and the founder of this movement, and I'm glad you're tuning in.
00:01:06.440 If this is your first podcast that you've listened to for the Order of Man podcast,
00:01:10.800 this is your Friday Field Notes.
00:01:12.300 So for better or worse, you get to hear my ramblings and thoughts from throughout the week.
00:01:16.660 But we also have an interview show where we're interviewing guys like Chris Williamson,
00:01:20.560 Cameron Haynes, Jocko Willink, David Goggins, Ben Shapiro, Grant Cardone, Andy Frisilla,
00:01:26.520 Tim Kennedy, Tim Tebow.
00:01:29.100 The list of men that we've had on the podcast is phenomenal, and I'm glad these guys have
00:01:34.800 decided to join us.
00:01:35.820 And we've got some very exciting guests coming up in the very near future.
00:01:38.620 So make sure, if you haven't already, to leave us a rating and review to subscribe to
00:01:43.700 the podcast so you never miss one of these conversations.
00:01:46.100 Guys, I'm going to get into this conversation quickly, but before I do, I want to mention
00:01:52.300 something.
00:01:53.100 I just sat down with a friend of mine who helped me co-found, and we co-founded together, an
00:02:00.680 organization called M42 Adventures.
00:02:03.220 There are so many men who reach out to me, and they ask about getting involved in hunting
00:02:08.440 or other adventures that they've seen me participate in.
00:02:11.500 And I thought that I would share some resources with you.
00:02:16.880 We've got an African hunt coming up this fall, and I would love for you to be there on that
00:02:23.520 hunt with me, with Rick, Trimmer, and with the other guys that are coming out, including
00:02:28.380 my son.
00:02:29.460 And so one thing that we've done is we did a podcast.
00:02:33.460 Rick and I did a podcast together with Paul, who is the owner of the ranch that we're going
00:02:39.760 to be hunting in South Africa later in the fall.
00:02:42.200 And we spent about an hour talking about the intricacies and the ins and outs and all the
00:02:46.940 details and the safety and what animals we'll be seeing and what other activities that we'll
00:02:52.520 participate in.
00:02:53.780 Not only are we going to be hunting these African animals, but we're also going to do a tour
00:02:59.340 of an orphanage.
00:03:00.480 And the tour is not the right word.
00:03:02.020 We're actually going to go to an orphanage and donate some of the food that we've been hunting
00:03:05.360 and give back and share.
00:03:07.020 We're going to do a tour.
00:03:09.400 It's a photography safari.
00:03:12.200 And then we also have a helicopter ride included in it.
00:03:15.340 So if you're looking for the perfect package of hunting with good people and getting to
00:03:22.020 see South Africa, including the safari, the orphanage, the helicopter ride, and everything
00:03:26.700 else that we've included, but you're like wondering how much is it?
00:03:30.300 What does it entail?
00:03:31.840 What's the safety, like all of the details, then what I want you to do is go to m42adventures.com
00:03:39.920 slash Africa, m42adventures.com slash Africa.
00:03:44.460 And you'll be able to listen to that podcast and learn a little bit more.
00:03:48.100 And then you can email me, ryan at orderofman.com.
00:03:50.860 If you have any additional questions, I will personally respond to each and every one of those
00:03:55.480 questions.
00:03:56.360 Again, m42adventures.com slash Africa.
00:03:59.820 And then email me if you have questions, dates, pricing, all that sort of thing at
00:04:05.060 ryan at orderofman.com.
00:04:07.040 Would love to see you there.
00:04:08.140 Would love to have as many men as we can.
00:04:10.240 We have limited spots there with only two weeks of hunting to one week sessions.
00:04:14.380 So you pick the first or the second week again, m42adventures.com slash Africa, and
00:04:20.260 then email me ryan at orderofman.
00:04:22.400 It's going to be phenomenal.
00:04:23.580 I'm very excited to go with my son.
00:04:25.220 I'd love to have you there as well.
00:04:26.260 All right, guys, with that said, I want to tie into what I just shared with you with
00:04:32.920 the subject of today's conversation, and that is purpose, passion, and a plan.
00:04:37.500 These are three key factors that you need to live a fulfilling life.
00:04:42.680 I was doing a little bit of research as I prepared for this conversation, and I pulled
00:04:47.120 up a Gallup poll or a study, I should say.
00:04:50.020 This is called the State of the Global Workplace, and this was for 2022.
00:04:55.660 So it is a couple of years old.
00:04:57.360 I imagine the numbers are not any better, probably worse.
00:05:02.080 And here's what it says, just to pull a few quotes out of here.
00:05:06.240 60% of people reported being emotionally detached at work and 19% as being miserable.
00:05:12.960 One in five people who are working are miserable, and 60%, so that's significant as well, are emotionally
00:05:23.220 detached.
00:05:24.160 Only 33% reported feeling engaged, and that's lower than what it was in 2020.
00:05:31.180 So I imagine in 2024, it's probably worse.
00:05:33.940 In the U.S. specifically, 50% of workers reported feeling stressed at their jobs on a daily basis.
00:05:40.860 41% as being worried, 22% as sad, and 18% as angry.
00:05:49.120 Now, we as men talk a lot about not allowing emotions to dictate our actions, but that's
00:05:54.660 not to say that we as men don't have emotions.
00:05:57.560 We certainly feel and experience a broad spectrum and array of happiness and sad and mad and joyful
00:06:04.800 and greedy and everything in between.
00:06:09.120 But these numbers are not good.
00:06:12.740 And I imagine that if you're listening to this podcast, as I have been in the past, that you might
00:06:17.160 fall into one of these camps.
00:06:20.240 In fact, the odds are good that you are.
00:06:22.280 For every three guys, two of you are emotionally detached at work, and 19% or 20% roughly are miserable.
00:06:30.000 You're worried.
00:06:30.900 You're sad.
00:06:31.620 You're angry.
00:06:32.380 You're feeling stressed.
00:06:33.420 None of this leads to the kind of life that we've been talking about for the past nine
00:06:38.680 years with the Order of Man podcast.
00:06:41.080 And I want you to have fulfillment.
00:06:43.620 I want you to have pride and satisfaction in your work and in your life.
00:06:47.800 Think about how much time you spend at work.
00:06:49.900 Odds are you spend between nine and 12 hours a day at work for five to six hours, excuse me,
00:06:56.380 five to six days per week.
00:06:58.420 So you're spending a significant, in fact, the overwhelming majority of your waking hours
00:07:04.100 working.
00:07:06.240 So if that's the case, then I would hope that we would try to find something that's engaging
00:07:11.240 mentally and physically and emotionally stimulating and gives us a deep sense of satisfaction
00:07:16.580 because we're fulfilled in the work that we're doing.
00:07:19.040 Now, that's not to say that life is always going to be easy or that our work just because
00:07:23.060 it's passion filled is going to be bliss.
00:07:26.780 It's not.
00:07:27.300 It's miserable at times, but it's the passion.
00:07:30.760 It's the purpose that allows you to get through those challenging and difficult times.
00:07:36.120 There are certain days where I don't feel like showing up.
00:07:39.100 I don't feel like podcasting.
00:07:40.680 I don't feel like doing a social media post.
00:07:42.360 I don't feel like stepping into whatever role that I'm trying to step into.
00:07:47.340 And yet I do it because I can connect the work with the purpose and I can connect it
00:07:52.740 with the passion.
00:07:53.580 And that's what I want you to have.
00:07:54.840 And if you're not feeling that, then please listen to this formula and most importantly,
00:07:58.940 act upon it.
00:07:59.840 So number one, purpose.
00:08:02.560 Guys, your life as a man is supposed to be challenging.
00:08:06.520 Sometimes I will hear guys say, I just want to be happy.
00:08:09.360 And maybe we're debating semantics a little bit here so we can talk about this.
00:08:14.320 But when I hear happy, I think of ignorant bliss, you know, sitting on the beach somewhere,
00:08:21.380 sipping Mai Tais and, you know, just living life free of concern or worry.
00:08:27.880 And I'm not actually interested in a life like that.
00:08:30.820 I think it'd be very fun for a couple hours, maybe a couple days at most, and then I'm ready
00:08:37.980 to get back to it.
00:08:39.060 And I think most men can probably relate with that.
00:08:41.600 We don't want an easy life.
00:08:43.860 As Bruce Lee would say, we pray for the strength to endure a more difficult one.
00:08:49.180 And on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have people like David Goggins and other types
00:08:53.700 of people who say, you just got to make life as hard as possible.
00:08:56.900 I don't agree with that either, but you're not supposed to be miserable.
00:09:00.680 There has to be purpose in the misery.
00:09:03.260 So if Goggins and these other people are saying, hey, there's purpose in being uncomfortable,
00:09:08.720 okay, I can make that connection.
00:09:10.500 But life is not meant to just beat you up physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
00:09:15.300 It has to have purpose behind it.
00:09:17.500 A reason for doing what it is you're doing.
00:09:21.680 So a couple of questions that you can be asking yourself is number one, ask your scale on a
00:09:26.100 scale from one to 10, do you have purpose in your life?
00:09:29.720 What's your reason for being here?
00:09:31.420 And I don't care if you're an evolutionist, you're a creationist, it doesn't matter to me,
00:09:37.020 but man, if you can't find what your purpose is in life, why you're here, for me, I'm spiritually
00:09:44.060 driven in a lot of ways.
00:09:45.140 And so I know that I have been called to be here, to show up powerfully, not that I'm
00:09:51.260 perfect at it.
00:09:52.060 I always fall short and I've been very open about that, but I'm here to show up powerfully
00:09:57.100 for other people.
00:09:59.040 And so I'm constantly trying to learn and put myself out there in uncomfortable situations
00:10:04.800 and do new experiences like, for example, the Africa hunt I was talking about, because I
00:10:10.140 think that's going to help me be the best man that I can possibly be so I can show up
00:10:15.420 fully for my kids, my girlfriend, you guys who are listening, members of the Iron Council,
00:10:20.920 the brotherhood that we have available.
00:10:22.260 I want to show up powerfully and fully for these people.
00:10:26.160 Now, inevitably, life is going to present its fair share of challenges, and they are a challenge,
00:10:31.920 and they are a struggle.
00:10:33.060 But even in those moments of difficult times, I find the sense of purpose.
00:10:39.760 And when times are challenging and difficult, I can drive through because I'm keenly aware
00:10:43.980 of what I'm supposed to be doing.
00:10:45.780 So ask yourself, is the work you're doing now, does it feel like a job, or does it feel
00:10:51.620 like it has some deep-seated sense of purpose behind it?
00:10:56.540 And if you're figuring that you're on the side of no purpose, then what would bring you
00:11:01.980 more purpose?
00:11:03.440 What experiences have you had in life that feel like injustices?
00:11:07.860 What experiences do you have that make you uniquely qualified to address certain issues
00:11:12.680 and problems?
00:11:13.420 Guys, if we can begin to answer these questions and spend time on a daily basis thinking about
00:11:20.260 the answers to these questions, then we're more likely to drive ourselves towards that
00:11:24.140 thing.
00:11:25.200 And look, it's not going to happen overnight.
00:11:27.760 You're not going to listen to this podcast and think, oh, man, Ryan was so right.
00:11:31.620 Purpose, that's all I need in my life.
00:11:33.220 And so tomorrow you wake up, and all of a sudden you find purpose.
00:11:36.140 It's a journey.
00:11:37.240 It's a process.
00:11:38.280 I was doing financial planning.
00:11:39.800 I started another podcast, which led to this podcast.
00:11:42.780 I did it in my spare time as I was doing my other podcast, and gradually it grew into
00:11:47.580 something very, very significant and powerful for me.
00:11:50.700 But that only happened because I was willing to acknowledge that I wasn't fulfilled in what
00:11:54.940 I was doing, even though I was making great money and providing for my family.
00:11:58.380 And I knew that there were other things I was interested in, which leads me to my next
00:12:03.540 point, which is passion.
00:12:04.780 Now, there's a lot of arguments about following your passion and that should that be what you
00:12:10.360 should do or follow the money.
00:12:12.940 We can have that debate.
00:12:14.160 But what I would suggest to you is that there's a lot of people making a lot of money doing
00:12:18.040 things that maybe they're not so passionate about, or maybe they are, but there's so many
00:12:23.640 different opportunities.
00:12:25.380 There's so many different ways to make money.
00:12:27.200 There's so many different ways to provide for yourself and your family and your loved ones.
00:12:30.480 And really, if you're going to pick one of those ways, it probably ought to be something
00:12:35.400 you're passionate about.
00:12:37.980 The adage is, if you do something you love, you'll never have to work another day in your
00:12:43.080 life.
00:12:44.160 And while it's cute and fluffy, it's kind of reality.
00:12:49.500 You know, I, yes, I do work.
00:12:52.120 You know, a lot of times people believe that I'm just dinking around on social media.
00:12:56.320 That's a verbatim quote, dinking around on social media.
00:13:00.440 That isn't what I do.
00:13:02.080 I spend a lot.
00:13:02.800 I mean, it's part of what I do, but I'm very intentional and deliberate about it, but I'm
00:13:06.900 also passionate about it.
00:13:08.900 I want to share these things.
00:13:10.760 I want to give you insight.
00:13:12.120 I want to provide what information you need.
00:13:15.300 I want to give you the help and the resources and tools that you can use that I have used
00:13:19.340 in my life to become a better man.
00:13:21.460 And again, I want to be very clear.
00:13:22.980 That's not to say that I have everything figured out.
00:13:25.320 Those of you who have been listening for any amount of time are keenly aware of my
00:13:29.300 shortcomings.
00:13:30.560 There was a guy on Instagram, a guy or a girl, I don't know.
00:13:33.220 It's an anonymous account today talking about how I'm hypocritical and I'm prideful and all
00:13:39.100 these things.
00:13:39.620 And look, there's times in the past where I have failed to live up to the expectation
00:13:45.500 that I had for myself, just like all of us, but I'm trying to be real about that.
00:13:50.700 I'm trying to be honest about that.
00:13:52.220 And I'm trying to share things honestly and openly about things that work and even things
00:13:57.280 that don't.
00:13:58.000 And that's why I share my shortcomings.
00:13:59.940 And it's not fun to talk about.
00:14:02.760 It's not fun to talk with you about my struggles with alcohol abuse.
00:14:06.820 It's not fun to talk about my battles and shortcomings within my failed marriage.
00:14:14.260 I don't want to talk about those things.
00:14:15.740 And I do because I'm passionate about it because I don't want you to fall into the same
00:14:22.620 traps.
00:14:23.040 And if I have things that you need to be aware of, then I have, at least I believe I have
00:14:28.540 a moral obligation to share those things.
00:14:30.820 And if I have things that I think will help, then I have a moral obligation to share those
00:14:34.420 things.
00:14:35.180 So my question for you when it comes to passion is, what are you doing when time is moving
00:14:39.420 the fastest?
00:14:41.280 What are you doing that people are constantly asking you for advice on?
00:14:46.600 Especially if you don't think it's a superpower, but people come to you and say, hey, how do
00:14:50.200 you do this thing?
00:14:50.800 And you're like, well, it's easy.
00:14:51.820 Everybody does it.
00:14:52.560 It's not easy.
00:14:53.340 They wouldn't ask you if it were easy.
00:14:55.340 They'd already be doing it.
00:14:56.680 So that's a pretty good indicator that you know something or you're qualified in a way that
00:15:02.760 somebody isn't, that a lot of people aren't.
00:15:05.120 So we need to find our passion.
00:15:07.160 Now, a lot of the times people will say, well, Ryan, like, so how do I find it?
00:15:12.060 Well, you just explore interests.
00:15:14.560 And this is one thing a lot of guys screw up is they think, like, for example, if I invited
00:15:18.560 you on a hunt, we talked a lot about that African hunt with M42 Adventures.
00:15:22.920 If I invited you on a hunt, you might say to me, yeah, I mean, I've been interested in
00:15:27.320 hunting, but I don't really think I'll do it.
00:15:31.460 Why?
00:15:33.420 Sometimes people say, because I'm not going to be able to commit that way.
00:15:36.600 Well, I'm not asking you to commit to anything other than going on an experience.
00:15:41.740 And that's what I did when I very first started hunting.
00:15:43.980 I didn't commit to being a lifelong hunter, as I would describe myself now.
00:15:49.360 I committed to going on a hunt.
00:15:52.540 And then I decided through that action that this is something I'm very passionate about.
00:15:57.320 But guys, we don't get to stumble upon it.
00:16:01.280 It doesn't just happen.
00:16:02.520 And the clouds don't part.
00:16:04.180 And you hear God's voice.
00:16:06.540 Or he sends down a dove for you to see and sends you a sign and says, this is now your
00:16:11.500 passion.
00:16:12.060 No.
00:16:13.040 You have to discover it.
00:16:14.380 You have to articulate it.
00:16:15.520 You have to uncover it.
00:16:16.980 You have to try new things.
00:16:18.300 You have to be interested in a lot.
00:16:19.780 And then actually be putting those things into practice.
00:16:21.940 And you'll find that some things stick.
00:16:24.660 And you'll find that other things don't.
00:16:26.720 If they stick, take another step.
00:16:28.900 Then another.
00:16:29.720 Then another.
00:16:30.460 Then another.
00:16:31.020 And before you know it, you're going to find yourself in a position where you're extremely
00:16:33.900 passionate about the bulk of the time that you're spending.
00:16:37.060 Now, guys, the last thing here is a plan.
00:16:39.520 So we've got purpose.
00:16:40.740 We've got passion.
00:16:41.480 And now you have to have a plan.
00:16:43.440 Okay.
00:16:43.740 So what are you going to do about it?
00:16:47.620 How are you going to make this purpose or this passion come to fruition?
00:16:52.820 And too many guys wing it.
00:16:55.060 They don't spend any amount of time thinking about it.
00:16:58.000 And what I need you to do is to actually come up with a plan.
00:17:00.940 Now, I can give you what I have found to be the best use or the best tool for a plan.
00:17:07.960 And that's this right here.
00:17:09.540 It's our 12-week battle plan.
00:17:11.680 I've been using this for almost 10 years now.
00:17:15.240 And I can tell you that every time I follow this to the T, it works.
00:17:20.680 And every time I fail to follow this, then I detract and I get myself into trouble.
00:17:26.660 If you're interested in this, you can go to the store, store.orderman.com,
00:17:30.460 and you can pick up the 12-week battle planner.
00:17:32.860 And we have all the videos, instruction, and everything else.
00:17:35.980 Now, if you use this, great.
00:17:37.400 If you use something else, great.
00:17:38.880 I don't know other programs, but I do know this.
00:17:41.580 And so that's why I talk about the 12-week battle plan.
00:17:43.780 Also, there's a free resource that I have available to you.
00:17:47.660 If you go to orderofman.com slash battle plan, that's going to help you navigate and map out
00:17:55.140 an actual plan over 30 days that will help you accomplish your personal and professional goals,
00:18:01.360 your goals with regards to physical fitness, with family, with faith, with friends, with money,
00:18:06.200 and businesses, whatever your heart's desire.
00:18:08.780 And we lay out through a series of emails everything that you're going to need to be doing
00:18:12.940 on a daily basis in order to build that plan over 30 days.
00:18:16.700 The only question then remains, are you going to execute?
00:18:20.140 But you have to have the plan.
00:18:22.200 Because if you don't, maybe you'll make it.
00:18:25.820 Maybe you won't.
00:18:26.860 And if you make it, you won't really know how to replicate it at future points in your life.
00:18:31.120 Guys, I want you to have fulfillment.
00:18:32.700 I want you to have joy and satisfaction in your personal and professional life.
00:18:38.960 I want that for myself.
00:18:41.020 And the best way that I found is this three-part trifecta of fulfillment.
00:18:46.640 Finding purpose in my life.
00:18:48.140 Knowing that God has a reason for me being here.
00:18:51.380 Being passionate about what I'm engaged in.
00:18:53.420 If I'm not passionate, I'm going to do something else.
00:18:55.940 Because my time is finite.
00:18:57.560 43 years old.
00:18:58.580 Halfway through my life at this point.
00:18:59.960 More than halfway.
00:19:01.220 My time is finite.
00:19:02.380 I'm going to do things I'm passionate about.
00:19:04.020 Excited about.
00:19:05.120 And the last is making a plan so that I can move from wherever I am.
00:19:09.720 Part of that Gallup poll.
00:19:11.340 The 19% of people who are miserable.
00:19:14.060 The 60% of people who are detached from work.
00:19:17.080 The over 50% of people who are stressed and worried and sad and angry about their jobs.
00:19:23.580 I don't want to be that kind of person.
00:19:26.620 And I don't want to live that kind of life.
00:19:28.080 So I have to have a plan to move me gradually.
00:19:31.020 Not overnight.
00:19:31.880 But gradually into a better life.
00:19:34.820 I'll live a better life.
00:19:36.320 The people I want to serve will lead a better life.
00:19:38.500 Because I'm showing up in a powerful way.
00:19:41.080 I hope that serves you.
