00:00:22.780 you can call yourself a man. Gentlemen, what is going on today? My name is Ryan Michler,
00:00:27.720 and I am the host and the founder of the podcast and the movement that is Order of Man. I want to
00:00:33.000 welcome you back and welcome you here. I've got a very personal story that I want to share with you
00:00:37.760 today, but I think it's going to illustrate a point perfectly when it comes to how we're training our
00:00:42.040 minds and bodies to work and thrive and excel, and maybe even how we've trained our minds and
00:00:47.660 bodies to fail, if that's what you're experiencing in your life. Guys, if you're new to the show,
00:00:52.780 this is a show about becoming a better man, a more capable man, a stronger man. I want to give
00:00:58.840 you the tools and resources and conversations and everything that you might need to thrive
00:01:02.920 in very interesting times as you lead yourself and lead your family and your community and your
00:01:08.260 business and every facet of life. So we'll get to that in here just in a minute. I do want to make
00:01:15.080 sure that I mentioned that you should subscribe and also leave a rating review for this podcast.
00:01:20.680 It goes a very long way in promoting the visibility. I'm not going to hawk a bunch of products to you
00:01:24.760 that I don't personally use. I'm not going to ask a whole lot of you other than do your part and
00:01:30.180 share the show as you feel important and necessary with other men who need to hear the message of
00:01:35.060 reclaiming and restoring masculinity. So please, if you would do that, and I've got a great lineup of
00:01:40.100 guests who are going to be joining us over the next several weeks. So you don't want to miss any of
00:01:43.340 that. Also one very quick announcement. I did want to make you aware of a lot of you guys are
00:01:48.120 familiar with a warrior poet society. I've been working closely with those guys over there,
00:01:53.580 John and the rest of the crew, Brendan and everybody else. And we're going to start doing
00:01:58.240 some very cool things, some collaborations together. And one thing they've got going on right now is a,
00:02:02.920 a network of shows that's going to start in June. And they've asked that I be one of those
00:02:10.800 providers of, of show. So that's coming soon. If you guys are interested in what their network
00:02:16.100 looks like, go over and check it out. Because like I said, June 1st is when it launches and opens up.
00:02:21.560 You can check it out at watch WPSN.com slash order. Let me say that again. Watch WSPN as in warrior
00:02:33.720 poet society network, WSPN.com slash order. And if you're interested, sign up, check it out.
00:02:40.660 My show is going to be there along with dozens of other shows on, uh, anything from what we're
00:02:46.540 talking about here, when it comes to being a man, uh, self-defense firearms training, et cetera,
00:02:50.960 et cetera. So go check it out again, watch WSPN, excuse me, WPSN warrior poet society network.com
00:02:59.040 slash order. And, uh, I think you guys will enjoy it. All right. Enough of that. Let's get to the
00:03:04.140 conversation. Um, the reason I wanted to talk with you about what you've trained your mind and body
00:03:10.580 to do is because I'm experiencing something with my son right now. He's been having a hard time
00:03:15.480 sleeping and, uh, he wakes up frequently. Um, as, as he goes to bed, he wakes up in the middle of the
00:03:22.740 night and he gets worried and he gets scared. And then he has to go to the bathroom and he wants to
00:03:27.040 check. And he's just gotten into this habit of, of waking up in the middle of the night and then
00:03:32.340 thinking because he's up that, uh, it's time for him to be awake and for him to be worried and
00:03:37.900 concerned and everything else that's going on. And, you know, I get it. He's, he's young.
00:03:41.920 And this is something that I think is a natural stage that all of us go through, but he woke up
00:03:45.780 last night and, uh, did the same thing. And I, and I said, bud, you've at this point trained your mind
00:03:52.740 to think that just because you're awake, that now it's time for you to get up and to worry and be
00:04:00.360 concerned and everything else that you have to do. You've trained your mind to do that.
00:04:04.080 What you need to do is you need to retrain your mind. You need to reprogram what these stimulus
00:04:12.240 means. So when you wake up, you need to reprogram that the stimulus is not that I need to get up,
00:04:17.620 but that I just needed to lie here, maybe read a book, think about good things, and then just go
00:04:23.020 back to sleep. But you've programmed yourself to stay awake longer than you need to. And it's
00:04:28.180 hindering your sleep and everything else. Now I know this might sound like a trivial example,
00:04:33.120 but if you really think about this in the context of how we, as men live our lives,
00:04:38.160 we're not all that different as grown men. We have programmed our minds and our bodies to,
00:04:44.460 to behave a certain way, to carry out certain actions and therefore produce the inevitable results.
00:04:52.720 We've conditioned ourselves to produce what it is we were after or what we, what we receive.
00:04:58.180 Uh, this is towing on the line of Sam Harris's free will thing a little bit where he talks about,
00:05:05.060 we don't have free will. We've just been conditioned to behave and respond a certain way through our
00:05:10.780 culture and our experiences and the lessons that we've learned and how we've programmed and hardwired
00:05:17.400 our brains to behave and think a certain way. So we've hindered our free will. Now, I don't think
00:05:22.520 that's entirely true. I do believe each and every one of us has the ability to think differently
00:05:28.320 simply because we want to, or we decide to. So I do believe in free will, but I think in a lot of ways,
00:05:34.700 it's maybe not as free as maybe we once thought it's not, it's, it's more, it's controlled.
00:05:43.900 It's more dictated through our actions and our behavior. So if you're not producing the results that
00:05:49.520 you want in your life, let's say it's your body or your relationship or your bank account or your
00:05:54.380 business or whatever facet of life that you might be dealing with, then know that it's simply because
00:06:01.320 your brain is behaving a certain way and you've hardwired it so frequently and so often and for so
00:06:08.660 long that you naturally and inevitably carry out the orders that your brain says. And therefore you
00:06:14.740 continue to say, produce the same results over and over and over again. So as I was talking
00:06:19.380 with my son, I said, you need to retrain your brain to, to respond differently to the stimulus
00:06:27.100 of waking up in the middle of the night. And he said, it's, you know, it's hard, dad. I don't,
00:06:31.220 you know, I just want to get up and do the thing. Of course it's hard. And guys, that's the point you
00:06:35.340 need to understand is that when you're experiencing something that you've experienced in the past,
00:06:41.320 your natural inclination is just to carry out the operating procedures that you've been using so long.
00:06:46.060 It's going to take effort. It's going to take a lot of work. It's going to take time. It's going
00:06:51.260 to be difficult to re imprint a new set of operating procedures in your mind. This is very
00:06:58.480 similar to the concept of a thermostat on the wall. All right. Think about it. We go up to that
00:07:05.180 thermostat and we control the temperature high, low, cool, hot based on our level of comfort. And then
00:07:11.840 the heating or the air kicks on in our house because the thermostat is telling it what it
00:07:17.000 should be set at. And then we have the power to go in and set that thermostat. Your mind is the
00:07:21.620 thermostat. You have the power to control and dictate what your mind is doing. And then it's
00:07:26.380 going to carry out based on the operating instructions that it receives and the stimulus and the response
00:07:31.600 and everything else. So if you want a new result in your life, then you need to have a different
00:07:37.380 thought. You need to retrain it to do something different. There's a great quote by Archie
00:07:42.860 Locus. He says, we don't rise to the level of our expectations. We fall to the level of our
00:07:48.500 training. You have trained yourself to behave a certain way. I have trained myself to behave a
00:07:54.380 certain way. And there's elements of my life where my training actually works very, very well. And it
00:08:00.500 produces the results that I want. There's other areas of my life where my training isn't as good
00:08:07.360 or thorough or efficient and effective as it could be. And therefore I'm producing those results.
00:08:14.200 Now this should give us hope because rather than relying upon luck or fortune or some set of
00:08:21.700 circumstances beyond our control for, for success in our life, it's systematic. It's just a process.
00:08:29.520 It's an equation. And if we put new variables into the equation, new inputs, then the output,
00:08:37.200 will inevitably be produced. Like we don't have to rethink this. We don't have to overthink it.
00:08:42.920 We don't have to reinvent the wheel. All that we have to do is change the coding and then the result
00:08:48.280 will be different. So if we're talking about retraining your brain to thrive and to dominate
00:08:53.920 and to succeed in every facet of your life, how do you do that? Number one, you introduce new
00:08:58.600 information. This podcast is a great resource for that. You're hearing things that some things you
00:09:03.960 agree with other things that you don't, some you've never heard. Some are new concepts.
00:09:07.980 Some are challenging the way that you currently think. And even if you ultimately disagree,
00:09:11.920 that challenging will begin to reprogram the way that you think about life and the behaviors that
00:09:17.960 go along with your thought process. So introduce yourself to new information, read great books.
00:09:23.420 We've had dozens, if not hundreds at this point of New York times, bestselling authors.
00:09:29.480 We've had warriors and scholars and astronauts and athletes, you name it. We've had them on the
00:09:37.680 podcast and these guys are thriving and succeeding. And if we want to retrain our minds to do the same
00:09:43.180 thing, then we can take that information they have available and implement it in our life. It's a very
00:09:48.320 simple and effective process. It takes time. It's not easy. It won't happen overnight, but if you
00:09:54.960 continue to put new information into the six inches between your ears, you will inevitably be
00:10:00.380 inevitably produce different results. The next suggestion I would give you is that you need to
00:10:06.420 surround yourself with the right people. If you're surrounded by people who reinforce your current
00:10:12.100 thought process, your current poor behaviors, then don't be surprised when you aren't capable of
00:10:19.900 producing different results. It's just not possible. It's not possible if you have the wrong people
00:10:25.660 around you. So consider building up your band of brothers, inventory, your current circle, ask who
00:10:31.980 should be there. Ask who shouldn't be there. Ask how you might introduce somebody else into your circle
00:10:37.300 that might help you achieve what it is that you want to achieve in your life. The next thing is to
00:10:45.860 invest in yourself. And I've talked about information and this kind of falls in line with
00:10:49.520 putting new information into your brain, but invest, spend money and time and energy and resources
00:10:57.480 into hiring coaches, hiring mentors, going to conferences. When that begins to be a thing again,
00:11:03.980 the more that you invest yourself in yourself, the more that will be returned to you.
00:11:09.180 A lot of people think, well, I don't need to hire a coach. I don't need to hire a mentor. I don't want
00:11:12.700 to pay for this product or this service. I want to do it myself. And you know, maybe they're being cheap.
00:11:17.240 Maybe they're being lazy. Maybe they're giving themselves an excuse, or maybe they genuinely
00:11:22.260 believe that they can do it themselves. And you know what? You might be able to do it over time,
00:11:27.100 but hiring a coach, hiring a mentor, purchasing a course, going to a conference, learning from a
00:11:33.080 mentor or somebody who's done it before will speed up the process and will cost you significantly less
00:11:39.640 over long periods of time than had you done it yourself. Invest guys. I can't tell you how much
00:11:47.380 you need to invest in yourself. For a long time, I had that same thought process that, oh, I'm just
00:11:52.640 going to do this myself. And I don't need to pay somebody else to teach me how to do it. And I
00:11:57.740 struggled and I floundered around like a fish out of water, flopped around trying to figure out how to
00:12:02.540 grow the business and how to thrive and how to succeed and how to do this thing right. And I just
00:12:06.880 struggled. So I would suggest that you don't do that. And you don't do that as quickly as possible,
00:12:17.040 that you begin to invest in yourself, hire the right people, get the right courses, put the right
00:12:22.140 information in your mind. And then the last strategy I'd give you, and we can go on forever and
00:12:26.620 ever, but I want to give you these four strategies. Again, it's great information in,
00:12:29.540 it's having the right circle around you. It's an investing in coaches, mentors, co conferences
00:12:35.680 and courses. And then the fourth component is making sure that you're doing your after action
00:12:44.260 review. You have to go in and you have to analyze as objectively as possible your performance.
00:12:51.360 Most men don't do this. We go from activity to activity, task to task, project to project,
00:12:57.240 and we bounce around and we never give ourselves any space or margin to consider that maybe what
00:13:02.760 you're doing isn't as effective as it could be. I learned this in the military. Those of you who
00:13:08.060 are in the military or LEOs, first responders, you're very familiar with the after action review.
00:13:13.580 It's going through an exercise or a training or, or a program or a project, anything that you might
00:13:19.280 be working on and then reviewing it and asking yourself, was it successful? Did it work? Did it not
00:13:24.820 work? Where did I thrive? Where did I fall behind? How can we improve? What should we do better next
00:13:28.740 time? What resources do we need? What assets do we need to make sure are allocated and put in the
00:13:33.960 right places in order to achieve the desired result? And you need to do it as objectively as possible,
00:13:38.900 meaning that you need to be critical of how you're performing. Because if you never learn to make the
00:13:44.640 connections between your thought process and the way that you're carrying out your orders and
00:13:49.680 executing on your tasks, if you haven't learned to sync those up with your results, then you're not
00:13:58.820 really giving yourself a chance to put new variables into the equation that might actually produce a
00:14:04.800 different result. So make sure that after everything that you do, whether it's a conversation with your
00:14:12.040 wife, coaching your son or your daughter's sports team, having a project at work, a conversation that
00:14:19.540 needs to be had, that might be difficult, taking on a new task, starting a new business, balancing your
00:14:25.360 bank account after everything that's important to you, review and analyze if you're doing it
00:14:30.480 effectively. And you're going to find out that you're not that regardless of the performance and
00:14:36.200 the success that you've been able to enjoy, there's always ways to improve. Even if it's just
00:14:40.780 incremental improvements in your efficiency and your effectiveness, when you do this, you will be
00:14:46.160 better off. You will be better off and you will be begin to rewire and retrain your brain to dominate,
00:14:54.380 to thrive, to succeed where for the past 10, 20, 30, 50 years, you haven't ever produced the results
00:15:02.820 that you want. The last step guys is you've got to take action. You've got to take action. It's not
00:15:09.060 going to be easy. It's going to be awkward. It's going to be uncomfortable. The other day I was playing
00:15:12.840 catch with a, with one of my sons and you know, I I'm right-handed. So I'm throwing right-handed.
00:15:18.000 And then he's like, dad, we should throw left-handed and see how we can do. And of course, you know,
00:15:21.500 I throw with my left hand and I feel so awkward. It feels awkward and uncomfortable. It wouldn't if I
00:15:28.320 would, if I traditionally did it that way, I'd get used to it. I'd get accustomed to it. But because I
00:15:33.400 never use my left hand, it's new, it's foreign, it's different. It feels weird. It feels awkward.
00:15:37.880 And it's very inefficient. This is the same thing with every element of our lives. It's very,
00:15:43.660 very inefficient to retrain yourself, to think about something differently, to do something
00:15:49.560 different. But through the strategies I shared with you, the four or five strategies that I just
00:15:53.520 gave you a minute ago, you will begin to, to hardwire these thought processes, these ideas,
00:15:59.140 and then again, produce the results that you're after. So I want you to consider as we wind things
00:16:03.980 down today. In what part of your life do you need to produce different results? Are you struggling
00:16:11.940 in your marriage? Have you not been able to connect with your kids? Are you overweight? You got a spare
00:16:18.800 tire around that midsection that you've got to lose? Is your bank account in the red? What is it that
00:16:26.720 you specifically need to address? And then as you begin to document and write these things down, the next
00:16:32.860 thing I would have you do and consider is what activities or conversations or thought processes
00:16:40.500 or beliefs have led me to produce, we'll call it less than favorable results. This is not a comfortable
00:16:49.640 exercise because you need to admit your own inadequacies. You need to admit to yourself and
00:16:56.180 potentially even other people that you aren't as good as you thought you were. But if you want to
00:17:01.380 improve, these are the truths that you need to face. You need to look at it objectively and you
00:17:07.260 need to tell yourself, I'm not as good as I once thought I was. And you need to identify exactly why
00:17:13.140 that is so that you can begin to replace the destructive and damaging thoughts with things
00:17:18.160 that are going to serve you. Things are going to help you. Things are going to help you grow,
00:17:22.080 having the right people in your corner, surrounding yourself with new information. That's going to help
00:17:26.140 you thrive, going to conferences, investing in courses, doing your after action reviews,
00:17:32.160 and everything that I shared with you over the last, whatever, 15 minutes or so. Guys, this is very,
00:17:37.340 very important. And the beautiful thing about it is, is that it's entirely within your control.
00:17:42.920 It's not outside of your control. The results that you're producing, although there are some outside
00:17:47.820 factors and forces at play, I won't deny that, but it's largely within your control.
00:17:53.300 And it all starts right here with what you've trained your mind to do. So I'm going to keep
00:17:59.360 working with my son and I'm going to keep telling him to train his response, excuse me, his response
00:18:05.420 and his ability to do something different when he's experiencing a certain stimulus. In this case,
00:18:10.200 when he's waking up in the middle of the night, but we're going to, we're going to work through it.
00:18:14.220 And I encourage you to work through it. I'm going to continue to work through it in my life.
00:18:17.360 And we're all going to be better off for it. On that note, if you are interested in surrounding
00:18:22.620 yourself with the right people, then I would also consider checking out the iron council.
00:18:28.880 This is our exclusive band of brothers, where we have these types of conversations. We have
00:18:34.740 assignments and challenges. These guys operate in 12 to 15 man teams, all working together to identify
00:18:41.060 their objectives, to hold each other accountable. There's a lot of success that comes in banding with
00:18:46.680 other men, like I had mentioned earlier. So if you are interested in that head to order of man.com
00:18:51.000 slash iron council, you can watch the new intro video that we just did and, uh, and lock in your
00:18:57.060 spot. All right. So that's it guys. Train that brain to thrive, to succeed, to dominate in every
00:19:03.880 facet of life. Uh, and we do that by acknowledging that we're falling short by figuring out where exactly
00:19:11.720 we're falling short and then reconditioning reprogramming, resetting the thermostat to
00:19:16.980 the type of result that we want to produce. All right, guys, we'll be back next week for another
00:19:22.240 interview. I've got some great ones lined up. So make sure you subscribe, leave us a rating review,
00:19:27.380 and, uh, we'll catch you guys next week until then go out there, take action, become the man you
00:19:33.100 are meant to be. Thank you for listening to the order of man podcast. You're ready to take charge
00:19:38.000 of your life and be more of the man you were meant to be. We invite you to join the order at
00:19:42.760 orderofman.com.
