00:06:41.420 so how did you become a private investigator uh you know it's it's funny i think i was probably

00:06:48.000 a private investigator before i've gotten got licensed because i actually did work on some

00:06:52.320 investigations throughout some of my work career but um initially i was doing a lot of executive

00:06:58.880 protection work in los angeles and then i moved to florida and florida at the time you needed a

00:07:04.880 private investigator's license to do executive protection work and so i contacted a private

00:07:12.560 investigator who worked out a deal. I actually helped him with, uh, with sales because I actually

00:07:18.620 did a lot of sales work. And so I would, I brought in business for him and in exchange,

00:07:23.840 he sponsored me in Florida. You need a sponsor. Uh, it's a two year, um, internship, two years,

00:07:30.300 40 hours, documented investigative work. And so I did that and, um, you know, wind up working,

00:07:36.540 he's, he's retired now and then wind up just doing my own thing. But, you know,

00:07:40.020 we were talking before my first case most private investigators do surveillance and some of them

00:07:45.700 just stay in that in that particular lane there's nothing wrong with that it's a good living

00:07:49.060 my first case was a homicide so i got thrown in the deep end you know as a license i got thrown

00:07:54.580 in the deep end right away and i've done a ton of ton of those actually so what did you have to read

00:08:00.100 like you had to figure out who did it or well the the and so the homicide the homicide i worked on

00:08:07.540 on this particular, on these particular instances, we're under what's called negligent security.

00:08:12.000 So if you go to a shopping mall or apartment complex or whatever, something bad happens to

00:08:17.320 you, say you're hurt badly, put in a wheelchair or deleted, your family can sue. And so initially

00:08:24.260 what we're doing is we're helping the attorneys get the raw materials they need to prove negligence

00:08:29.600 on part of the property owner or business owner or whatever it is. What, what usually winds up

00:08:35.520 happening is as you're interviewing people tracking people down and talking to more people

00:08:39.940 you actually wind up getting more information about what actually happened than than law

00:08:45.460 enforcement typically does uh most of these oh because they want to have a guard up against you

00:08:49.800 like no one wants to get incriminated so yeah yeah and well like i just think with a cop you're

00:08:55.640 naturally like you don't want to be dragged into something yeah but but also too even further than

00:09:00.140 that you know a lot of these cases occur in lower income areas and you know honestly you know are

00:09:07.120 they really going to work that hard you know like like two knuckleheads one one guy you know

00:09:12.680 they're getting a paycheck anyway yeah exactly and and that's that's not a that's not to put down

00:09:17.500 law enforcement or whatever but you know they've got so many things to work on when i'm working on

00:09:21.320 a case i'm working on that case they might be working on 30 homicides i might be working on

00:09:26.760 just that one. So then there's the time factor. I've got more time to put in because I'm being

00:09:30.780 paid specifically to work on that. And so I almost always wind up with more information

00:09:35.200 than law enforcement. And even some of the unsolved ones, I'll find out who's working on

00:09:42.020 them. You might be interested. I'm actually working on a case right now to try to help a guy

00:09:45.500 get free. He was falsely convicted to life in prison for homicide. And we found some witnesses

00:09:52.180 that will say that, no, he didn't actually do it with somebody else.

00:09:54.980 No way.

00:09:55.980 No, seriously, it's a heart attack.

00:09:57.220 So how did he get pinned for it?

00:09:59.960 Was it on purpose or was he wrong place, wrong time?

00:10:03.480 Well, here's what happened.

00:10:04.620 A couple of different things happened with him.

00:10:07.860 So he was near where it happened, but there were three individuals that saw what happened.

00:10:12.460 But because of this no snitching code that they have in the streets, they think talking to the police is snitching.

00:10:18.900 Well, you know, you don't have to say who did it necessarily, but they didn't come forward and say that this guy didn't do it.

00:10:25.420 And so he had a choice to take a life in prison or the death penalty.

00:10:29.740 And so obviously, you know, he chose life in prison.

00:10:33.100 But, you know, since then it was uncovered that there were three individuals that will actually say,

00:10:39.100 and I actually got a statement from one of them saying an affidavit saying that, no, it wasn't him.

00:10:45.280 You know, he didn't actually do it.

00:10:46.580 It had to be somebody else.

00:10:48.120 and there's another one he's locked up right now so i'm trying to get it get a chance to go see him

00:10:52.660 to get a statement from him too to try to get the guy free not that he's an angel but i think what

00:10:58.840 happened was the the detective that was working on this and i won't put his name out there obviously

00:11:02.600 the detective just didn't like the guy because because he missed him so many other times or so

00:11:07.080 many other things that he's like okay you know what maybe he didn't maybe he didn't do this

00:11:10.860 however he did so much so many other things and so we got him and so um but um you know

00:11:17.660 hopefully luck of the irish we can we can get this guy free we got one statement so far we're

00:11:22.900 going to try to add another one and maybe get the guy justice so in your work what percent of your

00:11:28.920 cases are like homicides what percent are um traffic human trafficking rings um marriage like

00:11:37.260 Yeah. Well, the, the, I don't even really, the, the human trafficking things, uh, typically when

00:11:44.620 I'm working those, I'm volunteering. So I volunteer. Yeah. I volunteer for a couple of

00:11:49.420 nonprofits that use a network of private investigators, ex-military guys, um, and

00:11:56.380 retired detectives to try to search for missing and exploited children. And so that's, that's how

00:12:01.320 I, I get involved in those. But, um, and the reason they use PIs is we usually have really

00:12:06.160 good, I got really good information network in Florida, like a lot of information, a lot of

00:12:10.840 people that, um, you can't, you know, information you can't get from Google or, or any place else.

00:12:15.820 You need people that are in that world and, and in that life. And so you've got to, you know,

00:12:20.780 they are, they are the literally quintessential shadowy underworld figures. Most of these guys.

00:12:26.480 Um, however, you know, information is information. And if, um, you know, the way I, the way I try to

00:12:32.560 quantify it. Like I had one person object because I, I actually had to, I paid cash to a convicted

00:12:38.300 sex offender to find a child. And so they were like, how could you give that guy money? I said,

00:12:44.340 look, at the end of the day, man, if you come to me and you say, Russ, my child is missing,

00:12:48.680 I want you to get my child. Do you care how I get your child? Or do you just want your child back?

00:12:53.580 You know what I'm saying? And so, so at the end of the day, I'm not method. Um, I'm not constrained

00:12:58.280 by methods police are and a lot of times they understand i don't have to play by their rules

00:13:02.460 you know i can make up my own rules as long as i don't go too far obviously yeah but i can make

00:13:07.320 yeah and and sometimes i push those boundaries but at the end of the day my job is to bring a

00:13:13.000 child back home i'm going to bring them home and so that's how the so so the human trafficking side

00:13:17.920 um you know i um yeah they'll pay you they'll compensate you for your expenses something gas

00:13:24.620 or whatever it might be, because it's usually a lot of, you usually got to drive a ton.

00:13:27.960 What are the typical human trafficking cases?

00:13:30.340 Like, is it all women or?

00:13:35.180 You only hear about it with women.

00:13:36.640 You only hear about the women.

00:13:38.700 The boys tend to get shuffled to the back.

00:13:42.080 And nobody really cares.

00:13:43.300 But there are just as many young men, young boys, especially being trafficked as there

00:13:47.400 are women.

00:13:47.820 And the thing about the boys is, you know, well, in both cases, if you don't find these children within a certain amount of time, they could disappear down a dark hole and may never be seen again.

00:14:01.640 And so, you know, the people that will engage the services of these, yeah, there's no other, evil, evildoers, you know, there's no other way to put it.

00:14:11.900 And it's not just men that are trafficking children.

00:14:14.400 it. It's, it's actually, I'd say 40% of them are women. Really? Yes. Yeah. If you think about it,

00:14:21.640 it makes sense because if you want to lure a young person or a child, is a man going to be

00:14:26.620 better at that or a woman? Yeah. There you go. And so, um, and so if, you know, these guys that,

00:14:33.240 that engage in this sort of thing, um, they're, they're, they're evil guys. Um, and, and there's

00:14:38.560 no way any of us could, could understand, or even your audience could ever understand anybody who

00:14:42.920 would who would you know try to do that but if you can't get them back within a relatively

00:14:46.900 short period of time they're gone where do they go um a lot of them don't survive very long

00:14:53.800 and are they all doing sex work usually mostly okay and so look the market for boys being

00:15:03.540 trafficked is more lucrative than the market for girls being trafficked no way dudes that

00:15:10.120 that want to do that will pay more uh i can't tell you why um but but it happens and it's

00:15:18.360 always tragic when it does and so how does it like what's a typical case is it are they recruited

00:15:23.160 through school are they school um again we talked about about these this being a portal yeah it's a

00:15:30.220 portal if your child has one of these and you do not have your child's phone jacked meaning you can

00:15:36.320 see everything remotely that's going on on their phone wherever the phone is whatever whoever's

00:15:41.860 texting them uh gaming apps are a big thing um we had one case where a child was lured

00:15:48.320 uh into hanging out with a with a with an adult male uh using i almost say the name of the game

00:15:54.540 to avoid litigation but it was an augmented reality game so it was a location-based game

00:16:00.580 And so but you could actually contact each other through the through the game itself.

00:16:05.940 And, you know, as we as we kind of reverse engineered what happened, you know, there were two opposing factions, I guess you could call it.

00:16:16.400 And it was like capture the flag.

00:16:18.160 well you know you could see who was was on that flag or whatever and the the the predator

00:16:24.360 used this particular game to um entice and ensnare young boys uh and so he you know who knows how

00:16:35.000 many times he was successful doing that but so i try to tell people man you have to know

00:16:38.960 you know everything that your child is doing on this or their computer if you don't know and so

00:16:44.860 So, you know, I'm a private investigator.

00:16:46.200 My son has known, knew from early on, I said, look, I'm going to spy on every single thing you do until you're 18.

00:17:21.560 with and i think what happens is parents get some parents get into a state of complacency

00:17:26.560 they think if they live in a nice neighborhood guess what if you do a sex offender search

00:17:30.800 like i live in a nice crazy i live in a nice area yeah i live in winter park um i went a little bit

00:17:38.080 further out like to a place uh called ovito it was outside orlando as well too not a bad

00:17:43.220 neighborhood, you know, very nice homes. There were more sex offenders in a one mile radius of

00:17:50.080 a friend of mine's, um, um, address in Oviedo than from my old neighborhood in the Bronx.

00:17:58.740 There were more in the suburb. There are guys that have, there are millionaires that are sex

00:18:04.900 offenders. Some of the, some of them haven't been caught. Most of them haven't been caught,

00:18:08.400 so they don't wind up on a registry.

00:18:10.540 And so, you know, there is no safe neighborhood

00:18:13.580 when it comes to predatory human beings.

00:18:33.240 So when these boys or girls get kidnapped,

00:18:36.080 do they typically stay in the U.S.?

00:18:38.380 or they're like raped and killed immediately or how does i'm just wondering what the typical like

00:18:43.760 life cycle is maybe it's a little bit different for every case depending on who's trafficking

00:18:48.160 them but what happens is they typically want to get the child out of the area and so a greyhound

00:18:54.220 bus is still a very common way to transport kids uh and so um like what why a bus and not a car

00:19:01.900 wouldn't they well well because the the the trafficker doesn't want to move the child

00:19:06.240 themselves oh you know i mean and so it's a lot easier to pick up a child from the bus station

00:19:10.560 than to go drive you know 20 hours to pick a child out from from out of state okay um and if

00:19:16.240 the child goes on of his of his or her own accord then it looks like they're a runaway initially

00:19:21.340 and so a runaway is going to be handled differently than a kidnapping or you know i mean by by

00:19:26.880 enticement because that's what it is they're kidnapping them by enticing them away and

00:19:30.480 typically what they'll do is they'll masquerade as a young person, the catfishing, and they'll

00:19:37.080 get them out of their area. And as soon as they get their clutches on them, they start working

00:19:42.880 on them and creating a dependency on them, on the predator. And they're out of their area.

00:19:51.000 Oh, you know, your parents don't want you. They don't love you. They don't care. I'm going to

00:19:54.560 take care of you and even in many cases drugs are introduced to create a drug dependency

00:20:01.200 and so uh one of one of the challenges for us who are searching for the kids

00:20:05.820 is these these traffickers understand that they're going to be people and not in all cases

00:20:11.580 but in some cases people like me hunting for them in law enforcement or whatever law enforcement

00:20:15.700 doesn't really get involved unless they're specifically told to because they got so many

00:20:19.740 other things to do and so um they'll change their they'll alter their appearance sometimes

00:20:25.260 drastically and so um there are a lot of different ways to start looking for them

00:20:30.940 obviously i don't want to put them all out because i don't want them to watch and and learn how to

00:20:35.000 get around one of the things they do is they'll put these they'll put these children they'll make

00:20:40.680 them look grown up and they'll put them on the adult um sex marketing sites for people who are

00:20:49.120 sex working right so independent contractors or they have a business manager or a pimp or whatever

00:20:54.340 you want to call it they'll put them on there but they'll make them look older but they'll put

00:20:57.420 verbiage in the whatever narrative you know that that will it's kind of like a dog whistle to people

00:21:04.300 who who are looking for those yeah and they'll understand that that's an underage child and

00:21:10.240 and so they'll they'll initially be um you know can i say the r word or i'll say grape yeah great

00:21:18.940 Yeah, they'll stay griped by the individual who trafficked them,

00:21:22.600 and then they'll start marketing them to their friends,

00:21:25.620 and then more people, and these children will be just passed around.

00:22:18.700 So, you know, I always cringe when I see, like, people putting baby pictures in really, really, like, in diapers or even no diapers on.

00:22:39.340 but women who put their children on their dating apps with them that is the worst thing you can do

00:22:55.260 from some of my investigations were that that uh child grapists tend to have a type okay like very

00:23:05.060 very specific criteria and if they see that criteria one of the things some of these guys

00:23:09.680 will do is they will ingratiate themselves with the moms and and um i try to enter their social

00:23:16.420 circle if they're married or something um like well well typically they'll they'll they'll be

00:23:22.180 you know most most fathers aren't going to let their kids pictures be put on the internet like

00:23:26.840 that right it's usually moms that are doing it and again not do any malfeasance they want to

00:23:32.140 show off their children. Okay, fine. But what they have to understand is that the internet is a very

00:23:36.060 big place and you've got to, you got the good with the bad. And so I worked a, um, a protection job

00:23:42.020 is a corporate protection job where, you know, they, they hired me. They're like, okay, one of

00:23:47.340 our employees, and again, I won't go into any names or anything like that, but one of our employees

00:23:51.260 found out that her longtime live-in boyfriend has been, has groomed and molested her daughter,

00:23:57.500 who's 15 now for the last five years and so um he's he's made threats against her and so we want

00:24:08.080 you standing by until he goes to trial and so initially supposed to be 30 this thing wound up

00:24:12.600 like 90 days man oh and by the way the guy was a competitive shooter oh that's just awesome

00:24:17.140 you know i mean yeah and so um and so that ratcheted things up and so what i did was i

00:24:22.800 got them to spend money for some more investigators and i said look i'll be here

00:24:26.440 but i want my guys watching him i want to know where this dude is you know i want to know where

00:24:32.280 this dude is uh because i didn't want to you know supersonic round uh to perforate my brain case

00:24:37.480 right and so and it got really really tense and and these things are always kind of but but there

00:24:43.600 are guys out there that will target women just so they can get close to their kids so what some

00:24:48.580 of the common tactics they'll use is they'll use the babysit you know the oh you need to go get

00:24:54.900 your hair you don't i'll watch your kids for you it's a trap it's a trap never turn over your kids

00:25:00.160 to anybody um the you know besides the babysitting thing there was a case in orlando where um a woman

00:25:08.220 a single mom two kids five and eight years old would let the maintenance guy watch her kids

00:25:15.040 so she could go to the club and go do this and hang out with her girlfriends he's such a nice

00:25:20.500 guy and he would buy the kids i mean video games do they realize people don't even vet their family

00:25:25.460 like like family members do it that you've known for years yeah yeah look so like you're doing this

00:25:30.260 with strangers yeah yeah and and then they found out you know later after who knows how long that
