00:00:00.000 The White House has confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump will be attending the G7 Leaders Summit here in Alberta next month.
00:00:06.680 President Trump will travel to the G7 Leaders Summit in Canada from June 15th through the 17th.
00:00:12.060 Danielle Smith is making it easier for Alberta to separate. It's honestly the best thing that could have happened in this election.
00:00:18.080 So let's go Alberta, man. Because honestly, we align more with the Americans than we do with Ottawa anyway.

00:01:54.540 That's the NDP's conclusion after Energy Minister Brian Jean appeared on a poster for an event called Courage to Listen.

00:02:09.440 construct the framework for a sovereign Alberta within a united Canada.
00:02:14.060 But the poster also includes a separation referendum question and speakers who support Alberta leaving Canada.
00:02:22.180 Having a Minister of the Crown attend would have been a major escalation, particularly the Minister of Energy.

00:02:49.380 They're panicking. Ever since Premier Danielle Smith made it clear that Alberta could vote on separating from Canada,

00:02:59.820 Their big bet was that Albertans would turn on conservatives for even suggesting independence.

00:03:08.520 Since Bill 54 passed, the law that makes it easier to hold a separation vote,

00:03:17.180 Now the Liberals are flailing, trying to make independence sound scary,

00:03:46.500 but in a statement, the UCP said he never planned to attend the event,
00:03:51.020 and Jean told organizers that last Thursday.
00:03:54.680 But the party did not respond to a question about how Jean ended up on the official poster.
00:04:01.400 Jean's name remained on the speaker's list as of noon Monday,
00:04:04.960 confusing even the most avid political watchers as to how this happened.
00:04:10.020 It surprised me to see Brian Jean's name on there,
00:04:14.980 given that he was one of the strongest critics of Smith's Sovereignty Act during the leadership race,
00:04:20.800 and he was one of the people who forced the sovereign Alberta within a United Canada approach.

00:04:33.720 But clearly, this is the sentiment of the party, if not the government.
00:04:38.680 The UCP said by holding a press conference on the matter,
00:04:42.400 the NDP is spreading fear and misinformation in a desperate attempt to recover their falling poll numbers.
00:04:49.380 But the NDP alleges the UCP is damaging the economy by cuddling up to separatists.
00:04:56.780 Talk of separation always leads to investment uncertainty,
00:05:00.740 which means projects are put on hold or cancelled.
00:05:04.500 Alberta jobs are being lost.

00:05:08.900 And Alberta wages continue to stagnate,
00:05:10.920 all due to the harm this separation talk brings to our economy.
00:05:14.380 A spokesperson for the premier did not respond to a request for comment on this story by broadcast deadline.
00:05:21.820 Officially, the government of Alberta says they're neutral on independence.
00:05:26.440 They say it's about respecting the will of the people, and that's fair.
00:05:30.880 But let's not kid ourselves.

00:05:35.060 You don't pass a bill making it easier to separate from Canada unless you know your base wants it.

00:05:41.920 A recent poll showed over 60% of conservatives in Alberta support independence.
