00:00:00.000 Trying to keep a positive spin on it, like if this is just maybe a blip and we can ride this out and
00:00:06.160 and yeah it's I don't know it's stressful but you try not to put too much worry into it.
00:00:14.000 The family farm is under attack yet again. Canada's liberal government has decided to abandon
00:00:20.240 western farmers as they face unjustified attacks from the Chinese communist government.
00:00:26.080 The liberals in this country couldn't be bothered to do their jobs and defend the interest of one of the
00:00:31.600 most important industries in western Canada, our agricultural sector. To them farmers are an
00:00:38.080 afterthought, a practice that should be abolished or eradicated even. Let's dive in. It's usually one
00:00:45.920 of the highest earning crops in Canada but this could now be seen as a liability. China's 75.8%
00:00:54.080 tariffs on Canadian canola came into effect last week and producers are already feeling it.
00:01:00.000 When we grow a crop like this that's expensive to grow and we've got it to a point where we have
00:01:05.680 the maximum amount of dollars put into this crop and then an announcement like that just essentially
00:01:12.080 dropped 50 cents a bushel right off the top. It's the end of harvest season and it's been a strong
00:01:19.280 year for canola but as that bumper crop goes into the bin it's creating mixed emotions for farmers.
00:01:25.920 It's that stress that they're they're feeling with every load that they dump in the bin that
00:01:30.240 they may not be able to sell their crop at the price that they were hoping to in the spring when
00:01:34.000 they invested heavily into growing this. Data from Statistics Canada shows Saskatchewan's exports to
00:01:40.560 China have dropped dramatically ever since China slapped Canadian canola with punishing tariffs in
00:01:47.040 March and August. I would say that the highest priority of the federal government should be to
00:01:52.160 resolve these trade issues and medium term we also need to be looking at you know some trade
00:01:58.880 diversification. Out here in the west our farmers are hanging on by a thread not because they did
00:02:04.160 anything wrong but because the federal government has turned their backs on them. China has been hammering
00:02:09.760 Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba farmers with unjustified trade barriers and tariffs while
00:02:17.280 the so-called government of Canada has done next to nothing. These are the people who wake up before
00:02:23.440 sunrise who feed our country who keep rural communities alive and yet when they're under attack the
00:02:30.160 liberals shrug no emergency meetings no urgent action just complete silence from the government while family
00:02:37.680 farms crumble on their pressure. For canola farmer Ian Chitwood China's announcement that the country plans
00:02:44.720 on imposing a provisional 75.8 percent tariff on Canadian canola starting Thursday potentially means
00:02:52.240 the end of him selling the crop in the country. No Chinese company is going to pay 75 percent to bring
00:02:59.200 canola seed in. The tariffs are coming at an already tough time for the industry where producers are
00:03:05.520 dealing with slim margins as they gear up to sell. It's just not as easy as a stroke of pan to get rid of
00:03:11.920 but we are frustrated with with the lack of support. Canola prices have seen a sharp drop since China
00:03:18.640 announced a tariff on all canola products this summer. A further response to Canada's tariff on electric
00:03:24.640 vehicles last year and it's creating even more unease this time of year for an industry surrounded
00:03:30.560 by uncertainty. And this is the first year in 55 years that I've farmed that we have never sold a
00:03:36.320 bushel of canola off the off the combine. Producers are hesitant to sell in a market that doesn't meet
00:03:44.080 their cost of production. With bins remaining full for the time being patience is fading. And let's be
00:03:49.520 honest, we know exactly why this is happening. The Liberals in Ottawa never lift a finger for Western
00:03:55.360 farmers because they know Westerners don't vote for them. That's just how vindictive and despicable
00:04:01.520 this government has become. They don't govern for the good on the of the entire country. They govern
00:04:07.600 for their voters. So when Saskatchewan producers face bankruptcy, when families are losing their land,
00:04:14.880 when, you know, they might not survive another year, the Liberals look the other way. Because
00:04:19.840 to them, these people aren't citizens to serve, but enemies to get rid of. That is another potential
00:04:26.080 impact for Western Canadian egg producers that we just simply can't withstand at this moment.
00:04:32.000 We've estimated about 12 million acres of canola is seeded in Saskatchewan just this year.
00:04:36.720 And the Canadian canola industry is about 43 to 45 billion dollars each and every year.
00:04:42.400 That is responsible that industry for over 200,000 jobs, Canadian jobs. And with China accounting for
00:04:49.120 about a third of our exports, the United States of America would be about 40% of said exports.
00:04:55.280 To put this in context, this 43 to 45 billion dollar canola industry, the Canadian canola industry that
00:05:00.720 we have employing just over 200,000 people, that is significantly larger than the steel industry,
00:05:07.040 the aluminum industry and the car manufacturing industry combined. I would say most certainly now
00:05:13.280 that the next step is for the Prime Minister to meet with the President of China and I'll be expressing
00:05:18.960 the urgency and the need for that meeting to happen when we talk at the next opportunity.
00:05:25.040 This is not the case when it comes to Quebec's dairy cartel though. Whenever that group is even
00:05:29.760 mentioned, the Liberals rush in like it's a national crisis. They bend over backwards to protect a handful of
00:05:36.640 well-connected, wealthy farmers in Quebec.
00:05:38.880 With all your trade deals that you've signed, there's been a minimum tariff that countries have got.
00:05:42.880 When USMCA gets renegotiated, do you want a minimum tariff on goods between Canada and the United States?
00:05:47.920 Well, we're going to have tariffs between Canada and, you know, they have them with us.
00:05:53.040 I will say with our farmers, as you know, they went up to as much as 400%, 250, 300, and even one at 401.
00:06:01.120 We found one having to do with a very small product, but it was high. So, you know, we've always had
00:06:07.440 tariffs between the two of us and actually Canada was charging us very high tariffs on our agricultural
00:06:13.760 things, a lot of our agricultural product. And that's one of the things that we talk about for
00:06:18.320 bringing that down. So, you know, this is a mutual thing. Supply management is not on the table and
00:06:24.880 Quebec culture will never be on the negotiating table.
00:06:26.720 Even risking the entire Canadian economy during trade talks with the Trump administration,
00:06:33.120 just to defend that corrupt system. It's a slap in the face to every farmer west of Ontario.
00:06:39.200 Western producers come in last in Canada. And that's just the reality they have to contend with
00:06:45.360 in this country.
00:06:46.080 Canada's Soviet supply management system on dairy, poultry, and eggs. It's been
00:06:51.360 screwing citizens for decades with higher food prices. It's been shrinking family farms,
00:06:56.240 and it's disrupted international trade deals. The dairy cartels are deeply entrenched in Canada,
00:07:01.440 and they've effectively cowed every federal political party, including the Conservatives.
00:07:06.000 No major federal leader is going to dare question supply management for
00:07:08.960 fear of upsetting the precious souls in Quebec, which benefits, of course, disproportionately from the
00:07:14.160 program. So the standoff on this terrible policy robs Canadian consumers of billions of dollars.
00:07:20.560 Now, Premier Daniel Smith might actually prove to be the catalyst that finally breaks this system.
00:07:25.840 I mean, supply management serves Alberta poorly, and she can make a solid case as to why the
00:07:30.000 province should exit the system. Smith has nothing to fear with the wrath of Quebec. If anything,
00:07:34.640 pissing off, Quebec only bolsters her support back home. Alberta has some of the richest
00:07:38.720 agricultural land in North America. We also have some of the most experienced and successful farmers
00:07:43.200 and ranchers. If they can be freed from the shackles of Canada's supply management system,
00:07:47.360 we could look forward to a more diverse, value-added agricultural industry benefiting all Albertans.
