Learn English with Navarro. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau finally showed up to work after a long and undeserved vacation on the taxpayers' dime. Seems he finally got the memo that our crumbling economy here in Canada is kind of his responsibility to fix. So he made an attempt at providing an update on the latest developments when it comes to American-Canadian trade talks. As expected, it was mostly blather and platitudes, with very little specificity on whether he will address the concerns of Canadian industry or the long-standing demands from the U.S. that have led to a standstill in the negotiations. We ll be taking a look at the statements he made.
00:00:00.000We're trying to make sure that ultimately, while the U.S. is becoming weaker, we will become stronger and we will diversify and turn ourselves towards Europe.
00:00:10.100Canada is the only country on Earth, along with China, that has imposed so many counter tariffs.
00:00:16.360Canada has been a very difficult country to deal with over the years.
00:00:19.920All right, so this guy finally showed up to work after a long and undeserved vacation on the taxpayers' dime, of course.
00:00:32.500Seems he finally got the memo that our crumbling economy here in Canada is kind of his responsibility to try to fix.
00:00:39.220So he made an attempt at providing an update on the latest developments when it comes to American-Canadian trade talks.
00:00:45.820As expected, it was mostly blather and platitudes, very little specificity on whether he will address the concerns of Canadian industry or the long-standing demands from the Americans that have led to a standstill.
00:00:59.360We'll be taking a look at the statements he made.

00:01:18.760Well, look, first thing to say is that the government has consistently stood up for Canadian workers and businesses throughout these negotiations.
00:01:32.880I expect that the discussions will intensify between now and the end of the month, and we'll be working hard on that.
00:01:39.860At the same time, we need to recognize that the commercial landscape globally has changed.
00:01:46.480It's changed in a fundamental manner, and we will continue to focus on what we can most control.
00:01:52.520Well, the commercial landscape has indeed changed.
00:01:55.760The Americans have a leader now who's putting their country and their people first for a change.
00:02:00.500And in doing that, he's revealing to the world many of the unfair and one-sided trade practices that have become commonplace when it comes to trading with the United States.
00:02:10.560You have many countries around the world that would impose tariffs on American products going into their territory, while their exports would enter the United States tariff-free.
00:02:20.620This is something Trump somewhat tackled during his first term, but it's something he's focused on heavily during his second presidency.
00:02:28.740Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. were supposed to have a free trade agreement, meaning that there'd be no tariffs or protectionism between the three countries.
00:02:36.940However, in the case of Canada, there's an industry that Trump has taken issue with for a long time, and that is Quebec's dairy industry, what we hear called the dairy cartel, which is protected under supply management laws.
00:02:49.880These laws limit access to the Canadian market for American producers.
00:02:57.060You either have protectionism or you have true free trade.
00:03:01.120But Canada is trying to have its cake and eat it too, in order to protect a small but well-connected group of Quebec farmers who lobby the government to protect their profits.
00:03:11.340This is a big part of why a deal hasn't been reached yet.
00:03:14.080We take good note of the comments made by the president, and of course we'll let the prime minister continue his negotiations, and we'll not negotiate in public.
00:03:26.960These have been the answers that I've been giving to every single question since the beginning of the negotiations.
00:03:33.200What I wanted to emphasize today is, as minister in charge of industries and of the economy, is we are not alone in this world.
00:03:48.140And that is why today is so important.
00:03:50.440It's been only 15 days that the prime minister signed an agreement with the EU to make sure that not only, of course, that we have free trade agreement, but that we are very closely aligned on the fence and on all our industrial policies.
00:04:07.340And we're trying to make sure that ultimately, while the U.S. is becoming weaker, we will become stronger, and we will diversify and turn ourselves towards Europe.
00:04:18.280We saw the prime minister push the deadline for these negotiations to August 1st.
00:04:23.120I'm wondering why that strategy and why not, for instance, more counter tariffs in this case?
00:04:28.960So, as I mentioned, we'll make sure that the negotiations continues.
00:04:34.000Canada is the only country on earth, along with China, that has imposed so many counter tariffs.
00:04:39.980So, we have had already a very strong response, and we want to make sure that while we are putting pressure on the American administration,
00:04:52.420that at the same time, we're creating, well, first, we're protecting jobs while creating jobs.
00:04:57.840And we're making sure that we're doing this economic diplomacy, which usually would not necessarily be the case in a normal world,
00:05:14.360And economic diplomacy is more important than ever, and that's why we need to make sure that while the U.S. is closing its market
00:05:24.040and really taking its own path regarding protectionism, that we, as a stable and democratic country, continue to have open markets, including with the EU.
00:05:37.040If you were unable to make out what the Frenchie was saying, she was bragging about Canada being one of the only two countries, along with China,
00:05:44.720to impose so many tariffs on the United States as retaliation.
