If illegal guns are the problem, why did Canada just ramp up the disarmament of its own citizens? Stick with me, because the answer is a lot more revealing than the Liberals want you to think. As the federal government moves ahead with its ban of more than 2,000 assault-style firearms, Prince Albert Police Chief Patrick Noget is questioning how enforcement will work.
00:02:38.860Since 2020, the federal government has banned thousands of firearms.
00:02:43.420They also banned the sale of handguns and pushed confiscation schemes aimed squarely at non-criminals.
00:02:50.080At the same time, gun crime has continued to go up, driven by illegal, smuggled firearms used by gangs and organized crime.
00:02:58.700Police and border officials have repeatedly said that many crime guns come from outside of Canada, not from licensed owners.
00:03:06.380So ask yourself, if illegal guns are the real problem, why is it that the government is focused on confiscating property from people who are already vetted, trained, and regulated?
00:03:17.120Mark Carney and the liberals talk about modernizing and strengthening the system.
00:03:22.260But in practice, that means more government control and fewer rights for the people.
00:03:27.860And stay with me here, because in the final part of this video, I'm going to show you a statistic from Canada's own data that exposes this entire approach for what it is.
00:03:38.300And once you see it, it becomes very hard to believe this is about safety at all.
00:03:42.960Tip for low-life criminals out there, if you don't want to get shot, don't break into someone's house.
00:03:49.380The premier has federal gun laws in her crosshairs.
00:03:52.980Danielle Smith says her government will introduce a motion through its Alberta sovereignty within the United Canada Act.
00:03:59.380If passed in the legislature, instruct all provincial entities, including our municipalities and law enforcement agencies,
00:04:06.720to refuse to enforce or prosecute under the federal gun seizure program.
00:04:11.180Ottawa's voluntary gun buyback program for businesses has collected more than 12,000 assault-style firearms.
00:04:18.880Now a pilot program for individuals has been rolled out in Nova Scotia.
00:04:23.500Lawful firearms owners are not the problem within not just the province of Alberta, but within Canada.
00:04:30.100Ellis says law-abiding gun owners who want to protect their properties should not be targeted,
00:04:34.840something the president of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police agrees with.
00:06:58.540Stats Canada notes that the number of violent crimes committed with firearms is still a relatively small proportion of crimes in Canada.
00:07:06.720But it's the share of those crimes that are considered serious, such as homicide, attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault, that are really getting some attention here.
00:07:16.440And, Jamie, largely driven by an increase in Ontario and here in the GTA as well.
00:07:21.680And we can get into some of those specifics if you'd like.
00:07:23.620Yeah, I was going to ask you, considering we're broadcasting here in Toronto and Ontario, what are the numbers look like here?
00:07:30.020Well, the fact is, almost all of the cities in Ontario saw an increase in the rate of serious violent crimes reported with firearms.
00:07:37.740But especially the GTA, the rate was 36% higher than it was in 2021.
00:07:42.920But it actually wasn't the highest in the province, Jamie.
00:07:45.500We have to look outside the city to northern Ontario in Sudbury, where the rate was up 65%.
00:07:51.820Over to our west, KW in Cambridge, up 53%, and in Brantford, up 39%.
00:07:58.560So Ontario, Alberta, and B.C. driving these numbers, Jamie.
00:08:02.340But certainly here in the GTA, police continuing to notice an uptick in these types of crimes.
00:08:08.220And Stats Canada noticing as well, noting that more of these are gang-related.
00:08:11.720So this is something I think that a lot of politicians, community advocates are going to have their eyes on, Jamie.
00:08:17.280We're having these ongoing conversations about gun control and about police funding.
00:08:20.880These numbers are sure to play into those conversations going forward.
