00:00:00.000 Okay, something changed in Canada, and most people missed it.
00:00:04.340 Just recently, the federal government quietly ramped up efforts to disarm Canadian citizens.
00:00:10.100 And they're doing it while gun crime keeps going up, not down.
00:00:15.020 Shootings, gang violence, and illegal gun use are all going up in major cities.
00:00:20.580 But the people being targeted are not criminals.
00:00:23.560 They're low-abiding citizens, Canadians who follow the rules.
00:00:27.780 Justin Trudeau started this whole mess a few years back,
00:00:30.820 and now Mark Carney and the Liberal Party want to push it even further.
00:00:35.100 So the question is simple.
00:00:36.400 If illegal guns are the problem, why did Canada just ramp up the disarmament of its own citizens?
00:00:43.440 Stick with me, because the answer is a lot more revealing than they want you to think.
00:00:48.520 As the federal government moves ahead with its ban of more than 2,000 assault-style firearms,
00:00:53.320 Firearms Prince Albert Police Chief Patrick Noget, who also heads the province's Police Chiefs Association,
00:01:00.080 is questioning how enforcement will work.
00:01:02.880 Is there going to be an expectation for police to show up at a doorstep?
00:01:05.600 Probably.
00:01:06.180 Provided with a list of individuals that is in possession of one of these firearms.
00:01:09.820 The buyback program for the outlawed guns is starting with a six-week pilot project in Nova Scotia
00:01:16.020 before rolling out nationwide later this fall.
00:01:19.200 Owners will be contacted with instructions to either turn their guns over to local police
00:01:24.640 after scheduling a time online, or keep them by proving the gun has been deactivated.
00:01:30.760 And if this is another added layer of expectation with respect to policing resources,
00:01:35.720 what's going to have the impact?
00:01:37.160 What's going to fall off the table if there's an expectation that we're being dedicated towards this sort of thing?
00:01:42.600 In his 33 years on the job, Noget says he's seen more crimes involving guns, most illegally owned.
00:01:50.240 Guns are being smuggled from across the border.
00:01:52.520 There it is.
00:01:53.020 So the U.S. pipeline remains a consistent source of guns.
00:01:57.480 Statistics Canada says in 91% of shooting homicides, the accused did not have a valid firearms license.
00:02:05.560 Go figure.
00:02:05.940 Targeting the wrong individuals.
00:02:07.600 I mean, we're targeting law-abiding gun owners and taking firearms away from them
00:02:12.060 and spending a lot of money to do it.
00:02:14.160 And at the same time, you know, they're not the problem.
00:02:17.400 The federal government says the ban is part of its commitment to tackling gun violence.
00:02:22.920 But Saskatchewan's firearms commissioner says the focus should be on tightening borders.
00:02:27.820 We need to redirect our effort toward border security, mental health, domestic violence, crime, smuggling.
00:02:35.620 I mean, the list goes on and on.
00:02:37.040 Let's lay this out clearly.
00:02:38.860 Since 2020, the federal government has banned thousands of firearms.
00:02:43.420 They also banned the sale of handguns and pushed confiscation schemes aimed squarely at non-criminals.
00:02:50.080 At the same time, gun crime has continued to go up, driven by illegal, smuggled firearms used by gangs and organized crime.
00:02:58.700 Police and border officials have repeatedly said that many crime guns come from outside of Canada, not from licensed owners.
00:03:06.380 So ask yourself, if illegal guns are the real problem, why is it that the government is focused on confiscating property from people who are already vetted, trained, and regulated?
00:03:17.120 Mark Carney and the liberals talk about modernizing and strengthening the system.
00:03:22.260 But in practice, that means more government control and fewer rights for the people.
00:03:27.860 And stay with me here, because in the final part of this video, I'm going to show you a statistic from Canada's own data that exposes this entire approach for what it is.
00:03:38.300 And once you see it, it becomes very hard to believe this is about safety at all.
00:03:42.960 Tip for low-life criminals out there, if you don't want to get shot, don't break into someone's house.
00:03:49.380 The premier has federal gun laws in her crosshairs.
00:03:52.980 Danielle Smith says her government will introduce a motion through its Alberta sovereignty within the United Canada Act.
00:03:59.380 If passed in the legislature, instruct all provincial entities, including our municipalities and law enforcement agencies,
00:04:06.720 to refuse to enforce or prosecute under the federal gun seizure program.
00:04:11.180 Ottawa's voluntary gun buyback program for businesses has collected more than 12,000 assault-style firearms.
00:04:18.880 Now a pilot program for individuals has been rolled out in Nova Scotia.
00:04:23.500 Lawful firearms owners are not the problem within not just the province of Alberta, but within Canada.
00:04:30.100 Ellis says law-abiding gun owners who want to protect their properties should not be targeted,
00:04:34.840 something the president of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police agrees with.
00:04:38.660 Common sense.
00:04:39.360 We're not interested in utilizing the limited police resources we have on a gun buyback program.
00:04:47.000 Here's the statistic they don't like talking about.
00:04:50.080 Despite years of expanding gun bans and restrictions on legal owners,
00:04:54.960 the majority of firearms used in serious crime in Canada are illegal or untraceable, not legally owned.
00:05:02.160 At the same time, gun-related crime is significantly higher than it was 10 years ago,
00:05:07.680 even as law-abiding citizens have lost more and more rights.
00:05:11.860 That means liberal policies are failing.
00:05:14.500 If confiscation and bans were actually working, crime should be going down, not up.
00:05:20.220 So when a government keeps doubling down on policies that punish innocent people and don't stop criminals,
00:05:25.860 people are right to ask, is this really about public safety or is it about disarming me, the easiest group to control?
00:05:34.800 Because once property rights and liberties are gone, they don't come back easily.
00:05:40.260 Well, gun crime in Canada in 2022 was at its highest level since data started being collected in 2009.
00:05:47.360 And CTV's Tony Grace joins us live with the latest on these stats.
00:05:51.480 Tony, thanks for joining us as always.
00:05:52.740 What stands out in this report to you?
00:05:55.120 Yeah, Jamie, good to be with you. Good morning.
00:05:56.560 Look, these were, as you mentioned, about 3% of the crimes that were reported to police were violent crimes involving guns.
00:06:05.440 But it's the rate at which those crimes are going up per population that is certainly standing out in this report this morning.
00:06:13.560 So highest rate since the data was first compiled in 2009.
00:06:18.560 And firearm-related homicides, this is something that stands out too, Jamie, they are being recorded at their highest rate since 1991.
00:06:26.880 So you're taking guns from law-abiding citizens, taking their guns, banning rifles, hunting rifles, and sports shooter rifles, right?
00:06:37.180 But gun crime continues to go up and it's higher than it's ever been.
00:06:42.600 What does that tell you, if you have even a little bit of common sense?
00:06:48.020 What does that tell you?
00:06:49.860 The problem isn't law-abiding gun owners.
00:06:52.900 The problem is criminals.
00:06:55.300 Because crime continues to go up.
00:06:57.840 Go figure.
00:06:58.540 Stats Canada notes that the number of violent crimes committed with firearms is still a relatively small proportion of crimes in Canada.
00:07:06.720 But it's the share of those crimes that are considered serious, such as homicide, attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault, that are really getting some attention here.
00:07:16.440 And, Jamie, largely driven by an increase in Ontario and here in the GTA as well.
00:07:21.680 And we can get into some of those specifics if you'd like.
00:07:23.620 Yeah, I was going to ask you, considering we're broadcasting here in Toronto and Ontario, what are the numbers look like here?
00:07:30.020 Well, the fact is, almost all of the cities in Ontario saw an increase in the rate of serious violent crimes reported with firearms.
00:07:37.740 But especially the GTA, the rate was 36% higher than it was in 2021.
00:07:42.920 But it actually wasn't the highest in the province, Jamie.
00:07:45.500 We have to look outside the city to northern Ontario in Sudbury, where the rate was up 65%.
00:07:51.820 Over to our west, KW in Cambridge, up 53%, and in Brantford, up 39%.
00:07:58.560 So Ontario, Alberta, and B.C. driving these numbers, Jamie.
00:08:02.340 But certainly here in the GTA, police continuing to notice an uptick in these types of crimes.
00:08:08.220 And Stats Canada noticing as well, noting that more of these are gang-related.
00:08:11.720 So this is something I think that a lot of politicians, community advocates are going to have their eyes on, Jamie.
00:08:17.280 We're having these ongoing conversations about gun control and about police funding.
00:08:20.880 These numbers are sure to play into those conversations going forward.
00:08:23.800 Drop your thoughts below and share this with someone who cares about liberty and property rights.
