00:00:00.000 Well, Alberta, shit just got real. I guess it was only a matter of time. I mean, Mark Carney isn't just campaigning against Alberta separation. The entire federalist machinery is mobilizing right now. And when I say they're throwing everything at this, I mean everything in the kitchen sink without exaggeration. 1.00
00:00:21.080 You've got the prime minister, you've got former premiers on both sides of the conversation, current politicians, former politicians, federal, municipal, business organizations, professional associations, labor unions, and a whole lot of anti-separation media coverage that all seems conveniently coordinated, by the way, all focused on one thing, shackling Alberta, not letting Alberta go anywhere.
00:00:49.840 And here's what I find absolutely fascinating about this.
00:00:53.560 For years, we've been told that Alberta separation is a fringe idea, right?
00:00:57.480 It's not serious.
00:00:58.620 It was never going to happen.
00:01:00.380 Well, if that's the case, why the hell is everybody working so hard against it, right?
00:01:06.360 It's never going to happen.
00:01:07.880 So what is it?
00:01:09.020 Why are they so concerned?
00:01:10.500 You've got Jason Kenney, a man who became deeply unpopular in Alberta, even with people on the right.
00:01:17.280 Then you have Rachel Notley or Naughty Notley, former NDP Premier, two people who represent completely different political camps, apparently finding common ground on this issue. Convenient timing. You've got Danielle Smith speaking against separation for a while now. Business organizations weighing in. And now you got Carney coming to Alberta to campaign for quote unquote Canadian unity with the people from Forever Canadian or whatever.
00:01:45.340 and I'm sitting here thinking, holy, that's an awful lot of political firepower to throw out
00:01:50.820 something that we're constantly being told ain't going to happen. But here's where this gets really
00:01:56.640 interesting. And hear me out. It's not just the politicians, right? It's the messaging. Because
00:02:02.800 from what I've been watching, the argument against separation seems to revolve around three things.
00:02:09.280 fear shame and insults fear of course they want you they want you to be afraid of what could be
00:02:17.060 what may happen if alberta actually separated you have shame and insults insulting you shaming you
00:02:23.860 calling you names because you dare question your province's future and then you have nostalgia
00:02:29.100 the canada that used to be right the canada that in my opinion they've spent years destroying
00:02:35.700 The Canada our ancestors fought for, right?
00:02:38.300 Suddenly they're patriotic.
00:02:40.260 Some of the same people who had a problem with the Canadian flag during the convoy days.
00:02:46.220 Suddenly they can't get enough of it, right?
00:02:48.780 So let's start with fear.
00:02:50.300 We've got warnings about doctors living in Alberta if separation actually moved forward.
00:02:56.140 And look, the timing couldn't be more convenient, could it?
00:02:59.440 Canada already has a doctor shortage. 0.97
00:03:01.960 You can't get a freaking doctor in this country. 0.93
00:03:04.360 Albertans are already struggling to access healthcare. 0.95
00:03:07.760 And now we're hearing warnings about how many doctors could be leaving Alberta.
00:03:12.480 To me, the way these warnings are being used in this debate feels like a threat.
00:03:17.480 Because that's exactly what it is.
00:03:19.400 You dare to vote for self-determination and you might not have a doctor.
00:03:23.640 That's how I hear the message.
00:03:24.920 And in a country full of people who already need a doctor, 1.00
00:03:29.400 especially the amount of old people that are in this country, 1.00
00:03:31.980 you can imagine how frightening that sounds to them. My first question is, what exactly is your 1.00
00:03:38.640 plan to fix the problem we already have? What's the plan? Because that's not what I'm hearing.
00:03:45.920 All I'm hearing is fear. You should be afraid. Tell me what you're going to make right for Alberta
00:03:52.680 to stay. And then there's the shaming, the insults. You guys know exactly what I'm talking about.
00:03:58.840 The name calling, the attempts to paint every independent supporter with the same brush, calling people all kinds of names.
00:04:06.780 I'm not even going to repeat them here.
00:04:08.340 And it's like, really? Is that how we're going to have this conversation?
00:04:12.800 You want me to stay by insulting me?
00:04:15.480 Somebody questions their political future and instead of asking why they feel that way, we start throwing cheap attacks at them.
00:04:22.780 But I mean, I'm not surprised because Ottawa has a long history of dismissing people's grievances.
00:04:28.840 Remember what happened to the truckers?
00:04:30.660 Did any politician in power from the governing liberals even come out to talk to them?
00:04:36.400 No.
00:04:37.420 Instead, what we saw was the emergency sack being used,
00:04:40.580 law enforcement used to crush people, and their bank accounts frozen.
00:04:46.320 That's what happened.
00:04:47.680 And to me, that sent a terrible message about how the government of Canada
00:04:51.760 responds to the people it disagrees with.
00:04:55.400 And then there's nostalgia, right?
00:04:57.180 The flags, the history, the sacrifices of previous generations that they suddenly have an interest in honoring somehow.
00:05:05.560 And listen, I respect the people who fought and died for this country.
00:05:09.320 I have enormous respect for our veterans.
00:05:12.320 But respecting their sacrifices doesn't mean we can never question the government or the direction of this country, which is very questionable right now.
00:05:21.440 In fact, I'd argue that the freedoms they defended include a right to have difficult conversations and to damn well question the governments in power.
00:05:30.520 That's what freedom is supposed to mean.
00:05:33.280 And now let's talk about the media, because this one is interesting.
00:05:37.400 This is where I've really started paying attention.
00:05:40.340 You turn on the CBC, you check on CTV, Global News, the usual, any of them.
00:05:45.800 And you look at the headlines about Alberta separation, and all I keep seeing is warnings, negative consequences, dire predictions.
00:05:54.400 And I'm not saying those concerns shouldn't be reported. Of course they should.
00:05:59.300 If you're balanced, they should be reported.
00:06:02.060 But where's the rest of the conversation?
00:06:04.540 Where are the serious discussions about why Albertans are frustrated in the first place?
00:06:10.020 Where's the examination of the arguments on both sides?
00:06:13.440 from what I've been watching, it's maybe 10% that might be fair. And then the other 90%
00:06:22.460 is overwhelmingly focused on federalist arguments. That's all I see. And I mean,
00:06:29.820 I'm not surprised. I want you to think about this. Why is it that so much of the messaging
00:06:35.640 sound familiar? Like, why is it that they're all saying the exact same thing at the exact same
00:06:41.980 time and why does it feel like everybody has suddenly turned up the volume literally at the
00:06:48.860 exact same time i don't know if you guys have turned on the news lately or open youtube i mean
00:06:54.100 obviously you're on youtube because you're watching me right now but have you noticed how
00:06:58.120 similar nearly identical the message has become against alberta independence what do you think
00:07:04.220 explains that now i don't i don't have inside information about what's happening behind closed
00:07:10.920 doors. I wish I was a fly on the wall, but I'm believing my own eyes on this. And I'll tell you
00:07:16.080 what I think. I wouldn't be surprised if there's been a whole lot of coordination behind this
00:07:21.140 campaign. And I wouldn't be surprised if checks have been written somewhere by somebody to some
00:07:26.920 group to help amplify the message. I'm telling you, I wouldn't be surprised. And then we have
00:07:32.700 reports coming out of advanced polling locations. People are raising concerns about federalist signs
00:07:37.880 near voting areas. Others have questioned the Canadian symbols and military displays at polling
00:07:43.580 locations inside a freaking Royal Canadian Legion building for crying out loud. How is that 0.74
00:07:49.500 appropriate? How? Like seriously, how is it that you're going to have Canadian military paraphernalia
00:07:57.420 in a room where people are literally voting whether to stay or leave Canada or to start
00:08:02.760 the process of leaving Canada, they shouldn't be there, right? The location is supposed to be
00:08:08.420 neutral. These are questions that deserve answers. Simple as that. Because the rules should apply
00:08:14.520 equally to everybody. And this tells you everything about what will happen if Alberta
00:08:20.160 votes to separate from Canada. They're not going to negotiate in good faith. It's not happening.
00:08:26.400 You can expect more shenanigans, more obstruction, and bad faith.
