00:00:00.000 well alberta patriots just received what might be in my opinion one of our most important
00:00:06.000 endorsements yet and this one is coming from christian leaders yes we're talking about pastors
00:00:12.560 stepping forward and backing independence which is incredibly significant considering the fact that
00:00:19.040 alberta is a christian province and if the christians come out to vote we'll have ourselves
00:00:24.880 an independent country guaranteed this footage is from a baptist church here in alberta i'll leave
00:00:31.200 the link to the full video in the description below but i wanted to react and comment on this
00:00:36.800 particular video because the conversation being had is critical for alberta independence let's
00:00:43.760 get into it it's going to set the table here tonight and just talk about why we're here to
00:00:48.480 talk about alberta independence and also talk about a christian perspective of that just so you're all
00:00:53.840 aware this is a non-partisan event we're not promoting here any one political party or
00:01:00.720 candidates and i have no affiliation with the app or jeff rath or mitt sylvester but this is an important
00:01:07.680 public discussion that it's important that we think through christianly and christians can come to
00:01:13.360 differing convictions when it comes to discussions about alberta independence or self-determination
00:01:19.680 obviously our our greater bond is our love and our connection to the lord jesus christ
00:01:25.600 but nevertheless this is a very important issue that we need to be thinking through and thinking
00:01:30.880 through biblically it's not treasonous it's not rebellion it's not revolution to think about this
00:01:36.880 the democratic process available to us to be able to vote sign a petition to have a referendum and then to
00:01:45.280 say whether we want self-determination for our province a future for our families that is more
00:01:52.960 hopeful than what it looks like at the current state of affairs you know it's good that the pastor
00:01:58.560 mentioned that the talk of independence is not treasonous because that is the narrative that the
00:02:04.160 mainstream media as well as the liberal government is pushing currently they're labeling anyone who supports
00:02:11.040 self-determination for alberta as a traitor or treason and it begins at the highest levels in government
00:02:19.120 liberals ndp which is liberal on steroids premiers all of them are calling it traitors and treason and
00:02:27.760 they're pushing that which is not surprising i'm sure they're going to do worse as they continue to see
00:02:33.440 the momentum that alberta independence has on the ground as we think about the the arguments
00:02:40.400 that are put forward for independence i wanted to summarize those there are several different lines
00:02:45.200 of argumentation and just right up front these are lines of argumentation that i sympathize with
00:02:50.160 and that i support but as you think about arguments for independence you think about arguments like
00:02:55.920 an historical argument maybe you've seen uh the picture where you have it's a political cartoon there's a large cow
00:03:03.760 representative of canada and then on one side you have farmers feeding that cow and then another
00:03:09.440 side you have men in top hats milking that cow and taking all the milk that cartoon that picture of
00:03:15.040 canada where you have alberta farmers feeding that cow and then you have the bureaucrats and politicians
00:03:19.920 and others in ottawa in ontario and quebec milking that cow that's a that's an image that was first
00:03:27.360 published in 1915. and so the issues that we're dealing with today are not new issues alberta since
00:03:36.160 its inception has felt as if they were a colony that they existed for the wealth of central canada upper and
00:03:43.600 lower canada ontario and quebec and that's why alberta exists and so this historical argument shows
00:03:52.400 that not only has this issue been around since the early 1900s more than 100 years but through other
00:04:01.680 things that have happened in history like the national energy program which i know some of you
00:04:04.720 have lived through and suffered through uh things like the reform movement the reform party that started
00:04:10.080 here to send our best and brightest ottawa to try to fix to try to put um do reform in the senate all
00:04:16.640 all of that has taken place in the past to try to address the issue of the brokenness between alberta's
00:04:22.880 relationship to central canada and so you you might hear about this historical argument but the picture
00:04:31.680 of alberta and its relationship to ontario and quebec is is largely the same the cow is bigger there's more
00:04:37.600 hands feeding it and there's more milk coming from it but but the but the dynamic remains the same
00:04:42.960 the other argument you might hear is the economic argument and you'll hear a lot of this studies have
00:04:47.680 been published which showed that 20 to 40 billion dollars it's transferred out of alberta to other
00:04:52.960 provinces every single year from the year 2000 to the year 2023 studies show that 544 billion dollars
00:05:03.680 has been transferred out of alberta these are funds that could be used to lower taxes here provide
00:05:10.080 relief to people here funds that could be used for infrastructure projects and but ultimately it has
00:05:16.720 gone to other places most notably quebec receives more than 50 percent of total equalization funding and
00:05:24.400 last year they received 13.9 billion dollars and that number is set to increase year over year
00:05:33.360 the province of pei even though they're much smaller than quebec 20 percent of their annual budget is
00:05:37.920 dependent upon equalization payments on average you take per capita each person in pei they receive
00:05:44.800 about four thousand dollars in equalization payments and mostly coming from alberta and other western provinces
00:05:52.480 and so there's this economic argument that the the relationship that alberta has with the rest of
00:05:58.720 canada is is unfair and it's detrimental economically there's also the political argument the political
00:06:07.360 argument is is related to the economic argument because not only do you have this this unfairness when
00:06:12.800 it comes to the economic distribution of wealth but then you have federal laws and and they're not shy
00:06:19.120 about it where they're seeking to phase out some of alberta's most important industries that's the
00:06:24.480 biggest irony here in alberta is the fact that for over 100 years now the west particularly alberta
00:06:31.760 and saskatchewan but alberta by and large being the biggest contributor the west is used as a cash cow
00:06:38.800 for the rest of the country especially the east but the same people that are benefiting from alberta's
00:06:44.800 productivity are the exact same individuals that are trying to destroy the industry that helps us
00:06:51.760 generate that wealth it's the most ironic political fact in all of canada like oil and gas uh like like
00:06:59.840 beef because our cows are adding to climate change and destroying the planet uh like our like fertilizers
00:07:05.920 that are used to grow our crops so you think of the three biggest industries oil and gas beef farming
00:07:10.080 and and and wheat farming or canola all of those are being attacked by politicians in ottawa we have
00:07:18.000 federal laws on the carbon tax on bill c69 which has been dubbed the no more pipelines bill but it's
00:07:23.280 an impact assessment bill and and no infrastructure project has been approved by that impact assessment act
00:07:30.720 it even requires gender studies and gender assessments to be done when pipelines are built bill c48
00:07:38.400 is called the tanker ban which bans and prevents alberta from exporting oil off the west coast
00:07:46.320 but there's no tanker ban on the east coast which brings imported oil down the st lawrence to feed
00:07:54.080 uh upper canada and lower canada and so saudi oil russian oil can come in to eastern canada but western
00:08:01.440 oil can't leave to other world markets another hypocritical political fact of life in canada alberta
00:08:09.920 is unable to send its oil to the east coast because quebec and other eastern provinces blocked the
00:08:18.800 creation of an energy east pipeline a pipeline that would bring western crude oil from alberta to the east
00:08:27.040 so that they don't have to buy oil from russia and opec dictatorships the the cry that this is going
00:08:34.080 to affect our oceans and uh is duplicitous when there's laws on one side of the continent but not
00:08:40.960 on the other all of this is related to politics and alberta you'll you'll hear like our premier talk
00:08:49.440 about uh these different bills and legislation which has stifled development which has blocked energy
00:08:56.640 projects which has prevented access uh for alberta products the global markets costing hundreds of
00:09:03.200 billions of dollars on lost projects so if you think about the the 500 billion dollars that has left our
00:09:08.480 province and then um maybe a comparable number for for investments that have left our province
00:09:14.960 the the the oil industry just on its own um the investments in the oil industry have gone down 61
00:09:21.440 in the last 10 years and that's investment that has gone elsewhere that's money that could have been
00:09:26.880 spent here in alberta but has gone elsewhere because of political decisions and so we think about that
00:09:33.200 that big cow that represents canada not only is like how bigger there's more hands feeding it there's
00:09:37.600 more milk coming from it but it seems for many in alberta that that not only do you have that
00:09:42.800 situation but now you have people in the east who are setting fields on fire and tearing down barns
00:09:48.160 while still demanding the same amount of milk it's almost like in egypt where the israelites were
00:09:54.560 called to continue to provide bricks for pharaoh's building but no straw was allowed for them we also have
00:10:01.760 the constitutional argument this argument talks about the the unfairness that is baked into
00:10:09.360 our constitution alberta is supposed to have sovereignty over its natural resources
00:10:15.520 but that has always been contested and it hasn't worked out that way even though that is a
00:10:20.480 constitutional matter that provinces have jurisdiction over their natural resources alberta currently has
00:10:27.760 a dozen matters before the courts fighting the federal government over matters of jurisdiction
00:10:33.760 and so when when the plea comes to alberta hey what about our partnership what about team canada
00:10:38.960 it doesn't seem to work when it comes to all of these regulations and fights over matters of
00:10:44.800 jurisdiction that belong to the provincial government not only that but our constitution can disadvantage
00:10:50.640 alberta in several different ways for instance alberta has about 12 percent of the population of canada
00:10:56.480 contributes nearly 20 percent into the federal tax revenue and approximately 20 percent of national
00:11:02.400 gdp although many of you realize that elections are decided before many of us here in alberta even cast
00:11:08.800 our vote east of the manitoba border and there was a phrase in another very infamous independence movement
00:11:16.400 that said no taxation without representation and there is an idea that alberta is unfairly represented
00:11:24.000 in the government in ottawa 1776 now as i mentioned efforts have been made in the past to reform the
00:11:30.240 senate as a way to give provinces like alberta a more say in the federal government those reforms are
00:11:36.720 ultimately stopped by the supreme court and so it was in harper's time and so that is no longer an avenue
00:11:44.560 to pursue but i think about even the senate the senate is elected by the prime minister through the
00:11:50.320 governor general uh they elected different senators are not voted uh by people here in alberta alberta
00:11:55.520 has six senators but you compare alberta six senators and that's that's a constitutional number that
00:11:59.680 alberta has six senators and that's a fixed number and then you have ontario and quebec each have 24
00:12:05.680 senators and so it's just a great disparity in terms of those provinces having the the sway of the
00:12:13.120 of the vote and the decision oh and it gets worse than that alberta has a population of around five
00:12:19.040 million people and only gets six senators and then you take a province like new brunswick with about a
00:12:25.920 million people they get 10 senators constitutionally that's the reality of canada and then you have
00:12:34.560 people wondering why it is that alberta wants to separate ottawa not only selects senators and so
00:12:41.360 the alberta appointees as you can imagine um aren't really folks that we might sympathize with many
00:12:47.760 albertans here they're always liberal but have a more of a um of a flavor which is coming from eastern
00:12:53.840 canada but then alberta are also uh filling their courts where that's uh the highest courts here lower
00:13:00.480 courts those are also appointed by the federal government in ottawa and they use there was
00:13:05.520 recently daniel smith was asking them to adjust some of the rules because they still apply the
00:13:09.520 same language laws even though alberta is predominantly english speaking but the same
00:13:13.520 french language laws that they use in eastern canada are still used to select judges here in alberta
00:13:19.280 and so this disadvantages people who grew up here and who are speaking english to fill those positions
00:13:27.360 and so these different disparities whether that's the historical argument the economic argument the
00:13:32.320 political argument the constitutional argument if you were to ask people today in alberta would you
00:13:37.360 join canada under these terms most would say no nobody would and so the question then says well then
00:13:45.360 why vote to stay now with these different arguments that are out there and there's others but these are
00:13:50.080 the major ones what what i want to do is to demonstrate that really the longing that i know
00:13:57.120 many of you have and that people in our province have um to address the grievances that are highlighted
00:14:05.120 in these arguments is ultimately a longing for a society that is built upon christian values and principles
00:14:12.480 the reason why when you hear these different arguments like that's not right that's not fair
00:14:16.720 it's because you're operating not upon a marxist worldview where you take from the haves and you
00:14:21.200 give to the have-nots but rather where there's dignity and value in work and if someone works
00:14:27.040 hard they should be rewarded for their labor rather than have that removed from them and so that is a
00:14:32.320 christian view of justice we want a christian view of of liberty and what it means to exercise personal
00:14:39.040 responsibility and determine your own future and to build a future for your family without encroachment
00:14:44.720 and so these are all christian principles and i want to just articulate now some of these christian
00:14:49.520 principles which i believe just just undergird the whole little sentiments that are expressed
00:14:56.400 in the independence movement so while you hear things about the economy hear things about politics
00:15:02.640 i want you as you here that are believers the lord jesus christ to realize underneath that is really a
00:15:08.880 a groaning from people around you to live in in a christian society with christian principles
00:15:16.000 now i'm going to give you just four of these principles number one the principle of liberty
00:15:20.480 when we talk about alberta independence you're talking about sovereignty self-determination
00:15:24.560 you're speaking about freedom you're talking about liberty and it cannot be denied that liberty is a bedrock
00:15:31.360 biblical value and that the protestant reformation especially has has led to liberty across the world
00:15:41.120 the western world formerly christendom is the world where there is freedom and that's because it's been
00:15:47.520 shaped by biblical values and the bible not just articulates this this freedom where there's no law
00:15:57.040 there's no government just do whatever you want the liberty that the bible espouses is a liberty based
00:16:03.040 on personal responsibility based on personal rights based on property rights based on a limited government
00:16:09.680 and based on local government all things that the government of canada is going against when you read
00:16:16.080 the opening of the the book of deuteronomy you'll have moses there giving instructions by god on on how the
00:16:22.160 government of israel should be formulated and it's a government of the people and by the people
00:16:26.880 and for the people they they elect people from their own midst and it's very limited handling matters
00:16:32.800 of of justice it's not regulating every facet of your life but rather it is god's law that then endows
00:16:40.000 us each with uh or his his image is on each and one of us we have his law in our heart but but his law then
00:16:46.240 gives us a sense of responsibility as individuals sense of responsibility as family uh the ten commandments
00:16:53.280 when it talks about not murdering and not stealing not coveting your neighbor's wife or your neighbor's
00:16:58.160 things the presupposition underneath all those is that there's personal rights that there's property
00:17:04.080 rights these are very foundation of the biblical ethic and we live in a society where those personal
00:17:11.200 freedoms are diminishing because as you get a larger government you're going to get less responsibility
00:17:17.200 as the government takes on more and more responsibility well you'll have less and less
00:17:21.680 choice and then soon you'll be growing groaning because of the limited choices that you have because
00:17:27.280 the government has taken that responsibility sometimes the word totalitarianism is thrown around and i
00:17:34.320 believe it's a useful word when you think of totalitarianism don't just think about the the most egregious
00:17:39.280 form of tyranny where you're run by a dictator and you're thrown into the gulag because you don't agree
00:17:43.760 but by totalitarianism what it means is that the totality of your life is governed or regulated
00:17:51.520 administered by the government and you think about our society you think about education and you think
00:17:58.000 about welfare and health care and um the economy all of that is managed by the government they have a
00:18:06.320 they have a totality of control and so you might call a soft totalitarianism and so under that
00:18:13.600 soft totalitarianism people want freedom and the trend is not good over the last 10 years the federal
00:18:21.680 government and their employees have increased by 43 percent and when the government increases by that
00:18:28.080 much well their fingers are going to get into that much more you're not going to have bureaucrats sitting
00:18:33.040 around doing nothing they're going to make more regulations to govern people's lives and so what
00:18:40.000 albertans want who want independence is not money from the east it's not handouts but it is self-determination
00:18:49.840 it is liberty a biblical idea of liberty of exercising personal responsibility of a limited government a
00:18:56.160 local government and seeking to have the blessings that come along with that and so that's the first
00:19:02.960 biblical principle the second one is justice people in the independence movement i believe and talk about
00:19:10.240 dollars and cents there's grievances there's frustration but underneath it there's a yearning
00:19:14.800 for justice and in a certain kind of justice uh we're all too familiar even though we might not put a
00:19:20.880 put a finger on it with the with the socialist uh marxist kind of justice which says if we're going to
00:19:26.800 have justice everyone has to have the same outcome everyone has the same grade everyone has to have
00:19:31.280 the same wage and so you have to to take from those who have and give to those who have not and then we
00:19:37.920 have equality then you have justice and that's not biblical justice the bible calls that theft
00:19:46.160 uh the bible calls that unequal weights and measures the bible calls that showing favoritism or
00:19:51.760 partiality to the poor and the bible explicitly says do not show favoritism to the poor or to the rich
00:19:58.240 to the sojourner or to the native but all are equal under the law no matter if you're from here in
00:20:04.560 alberta or from quebec whether you're um rich or poor there should be equality under the law that's true
00:20:12.960 biblical justice uh the picture of lady justice which is built upon the scriptures she's blindfolded because
00:20:19.280 lady justice is blind supposed to be and so we can feel that the society the way it is is not fair
00:20:26.320 it's not right because our longing is for a biblical justice not a marxist justice socialism leaves a
00:20:34.400 bitter taste in the mouths of albertans and i believe that's why there's a strong conservative base here
00:20:41.120 because of a rejection of socialism and all that it entails because there's a desire for justice according
00:20:48.720 to god's standards it has always been the goal of the liberal party of canada to destroy alberta to
00:20:56.720 keep alberta down to damage our industry it's because alberta has been the one province that has been the
00:21:03.200 most vocal against socialism and against communism the kind of communism that canada is headed towards
00:21:11.920 soft totalitarianism like the pastor described it where the government controls every single
00:21:18.640 aspect of your life you're a managed subject because every little thing in your life the government
00:21:26.800 controls directly or indirectly and albertans are the ones who oppose that the most this is the same
00:21:34.720 idea of justice that fueled the american independence movement uh the people in england of course they
00:21:41.440 would call the americans a bunch of whiners and complainers raiders you know rebellion seditious treason
00:21:47.040 all of these labels were given to the americans when they were going through this period of independence
00:21:51.440 uh themselves but in fact the people in england would call it the presbyterian revolt this idea
00:21:57.280 that there's these ministers and people talking about biblical justice and and they saw the church was fueling
00:22:04.560 these ideas which led to their independence the christians had a lot to do with the american
00:22:11.040 revolution the christians had a lot to do with 1776 like this pastor just said so the fact that a large
00:22:18.880 percentage of alberta patriots people who support alberta independence are christians like myself is no
00:22:26.240 surprise and i am happy to see christian leaders like this pastor right here speaking very eloquently and clearly but in
00:22:35.600 simple terms about the importance of alberta self-determination justice is so important number three
00:22:41.840 i want to talk about vocation or calling vocation or calling as i mentioned people here in alberta
00:22:49.600 are not asking for money they don't want handouts they don't want special treatment
00:22:53.120 they don't want a special place in canada but they just want to work and receive the fruit of their
00:23:01.200 labors and that their work might be done without hindrance without theft without robbery without undue
00:23:08.880 regulation without being choked out and then to be able to pass on that heritage to their children
00:23:14.080 and their children's children that that's the desire because biblically the the value that people
00:23:19.840 are learning for is is really what god has made each one of us we're made in his image he made abony
00:23:24.720 put him in the garden and he called them to work and this work that he gave to them was before the fall
00:23:31.520 before the entrance of sin work is something that is dignified it's something that is noble it's
00:23:37.440 something that gives us purpose work is not just something that you do the whole socialism marxism
00:23:42.880 communism those ideas uh view work as a curse and and to be liberated is to be liberated from work but
00:23:49.040 the christian world view is no work is good work is dignifying and the reformers would call work your
00:23:55.520 your vocation it was your calling this was your destiny this is what you were born to do and so
00:24:01.920 as you work and as you labor not only are you providing for your family but you're building a
00:24:06.160 legacy it has meaning and so your job is not just a title it's not just what you do but it's part of
00:24:12.640 who you are and so the people here in alberta i believe have this longing to work to be um
00:24:19.120 um have this dignity as they go about their work it's a stewardship it's an honor they have a purpose
00:24:26.880 in it part of that it was realized in ontario recently when donald trump announced tariffs
00:24:34.080 on steel and the auto industry and this this began the whole elbows up movement uh booing the american
00:24:43.600 national anthem and when people did that in eastern canada they were called patriots
00:24:47.760 uh when when people here grown under the same kind of treatment they're called whiners and
00:24:53.760 complainers and traitors yep not patriots but what happened with trump's tariffs and his threats of
00:25:01.600 tariffs was that the people in ontario and quebec saw that tariffs upon steel and auto were not just
00:25:08.560 an attack on those industries but attack on the very livelihoods and the well-being and the welfare
00:25:13.760 of the people in canada but the light bulb didn't go on to realize that federal legislation is having
00:25:20.960 the same effect to people here in alberta that an attack on the oil and gas industry and all this
00:25:27.200 rhetoric coming from the east saying we need to phase it out we need to end it we need to leave all
00:25:31.200 of that wealth in the ground when that rhetoric continues to pour from the mouth they don't realize
00:25:35.360 that an attack upon the work here in alberta is an attack upon alberta workers it's attack on livelihoods
00:25:44.080 it's attack upon the future of people here in alberta the children of the people here in alberta who
00:25:49.440 gain a sustenance and a living from this and so the idea of vocation and calling and working in a stewardship
00:25:59.040 i believe is a very key biblical value and it's one of those essential values that we see in the
00:26:04.960 independence movement and the fourth and finally
00:26:09.120 this biblical notion of belonging of belonging of having a place to call home you've likely all been
00:26:16.960 in a situation where you come into a new city you go to a new school a new new job environment and the
00:26:24.560 the opening hours and days of that experience are very unsettling you you feel like an outsider you
00:26:30.960 don't feel like you're rooted like you're grounded it's a very unsettling we as human beings god has
00:26:35.680 made us to to be together in community to be rooted in a family and to be rooted in a certain place
00:26:42.480 we don't do well as nomads we don't do well as this floating around and and not having our identity
00:26:49.680 grounded to a certain place in a certain history and stories that have gone before us again this
00:26:56.400 is a biblical theme this idea of the place or the land is central to the bible's story and i believe
00:27:04.800 the land here is a as an important part of alberta's desire for independence and in part because the land
00:27:12.880 under our feet here in alberta whether you've you've come here recently or been here a long time or
00:27:17.440 whether you're born and raised here but i find people here in alberta they get acquainted with
00:27:21.840 the land with its geography with its structures and it's more than just this god-given desire to be
00:27:27.440 rooted and to be belong and be part of the community but we realize that that alberta's wealth and and
00:27:32.800 who we are here as albertans really depends upon where we live in this land so oil and gas uh beef farming
00:27:42.240 um the large large farm fields and weed or canola all all of that the sustenance that we all live
00:27:49.360 on is coming from the land the beautiful mountains that bring tourists and bring more economic prosperity
00:27:55.520 here all of that is because of the place in which we live and so it doesn't take long for people to
00:28:00.720 come to alberta and put a cowboy hat on cowboy boots and they feel like they're a cowboy they feel
00:28:06.480 connected here to this land it's a sense of belonging that that the bible speaks about these
00:28:13.040 national values that are now said to be canadian values i know many of you probably don't espouse them
00:28:19.200 because they're the values of the world economic forum their values of not owning property and being
00:28:24.480 happy their values of imposing language laws that are foreign to this place um other kinds of values that
00:28:35.440 are that are foreign to the history and heritage and the ethic and the culture of this place that
00:28:43.280 have nothing to do with the part of this the longing for independence is because there's a sense in which
00:28:48.240 albertans feel they belong here in this land in this place but that they don't really belong in canada
00:28:55.760 that the values don't don't match that there's not a place for them not a rootedness and a belonging
00:29:02.880 in a larger national project and it's either a foundation built upon god's word which will lead
00:29:09.360 to life and flourishing or it'll be built upon man's ideas and wisdom and today the prevalent ideas
00:29:15.840 are the ideas of marxism and enlightenment and all these ideas that have brought destruction and havoc to
00:29:22.560 our country the religion of this new canada replaces liberty with the nanny state giving cradle to the grave care
00:29:30.320 the religion of the new canada replaces justice with government sanctioned theft and different
00:29:36.320 standards that reward some and disadvantage others the religion of the new canada replaces vocation
00:29:42.240 with government welfare and social programs and red tape and industry killing regulations
00:29:47.600 the religion of the new canada replaces belonging with a false national identity
00:29:52.960 and our only connection is that we're connected under the same government and this is our canadian value
00:30:00.720 rather than being a people rooted in a land together in community and under god fulfilling our calling
00:30:07.120 this pastor understands what's happening on the ground here in alberta and why the desire from a lot of albertans to
00:30:16.000 become an independent country separate from canada especially with what's happening to canada and
