We're here at the Alberta Edmonton International Airport to alert all the newcomers that this is
00:00:08.720
the last time you'll be able to enter Alberta without an Alberta passport. And we've got an
00:00:14.800
early bird sale going on Alberta passports. What do you guys think about Alberta leaving
00:00:22.400
Canada? Got any thoughts on that? I'd be okay and I'd move to Alberta. All right,
00:00:27.440
that's what we want to hear, buddy. Right on. Thank you very much. We're going to pave the way to freedom.
00:00:34.880
Now, if Saskatchewan or Alberta were simply to declare themselves independent states,
00:00:40.960
and other states were to recognize them as independent states, and the government of
00:00:45.200
Canada ceased to have any control over Saskatchewan and Alberta, it may be that de facto they would
00:00:51.600
become independent states as a matter of international law. And the Supreme Court did
00:00:56.320
acknowledge that that was a possibility. I guess the flip side of what they're saying is that
00:01:00.960
if our concerns are not addressed, we feel as though they have been not addressed,
00:01:05.520
then we're willing to explore separation. It's kind of raising the stakes.
00:01:12.240
Look, I've said it before on this channel. International recognition is the ultimate game changer.
00:01:18.720
That's the line between being called a rogue province and being treated as an actual nation.
00:01:23.280
Now, opponents love to say Canada will never allow Alberta and Saskatchewan to separate.
00:01:30.400
Well, no kidding. Ottawa doesn't want to lose its golden goose. But here's the reality. When the federal
00:01:36.880
government refuses to negotiate in good faith, when it ignores the will of the people, then the outside
00:01:43.440
world can step in. And let's be honest, the United States has already signaled that they respect
00:01:50.480
Western Canadians' right to self-determination. If Washington chooses to recognize Alberta and
00:01:56.960
Saskatchewan, overnight they become de facto new nations. And considering an independent West would
00:02:04.560
be friendlier and closer to America compared to a Canada that causes up to communist China, well,
00:02:11.760
that's not a hard choice now, is it? Very soon you're going to be asked to sign a petition and will
00:02:18.640
then lead to a referendum, I suspect, in October of 2026. And it'd be really important in the time
00:02:25.280
between now and then that you reach out to your friends and your neighbors, that you talk to your
00:02:30.480
colleagues, the guys on your hockey team, everybody you know, to explain to them the importance of
00:02:37.360
independence, the prosperity that that will bring to your community, to you, to your family, to your
00:02:44.480
children, to your grandchildren, and how it is a way out of this dystopian nightmare of Ottawa-controlled
00:02:51.360
Canada under the Liberals. An independent Alberta will not be subject to Bill C-69.
00:02:57.440
It will not be subject to a carbon tax and these other things. It will not be net zero. We will be
00:03:04.640
able to control immigration to reasonable, sensible levels. We will be able to have in Alberta,
00:03:10.720
an independent Alberta, our own criminal justice system. We won't have this catch and release and
00:03:15.440
two-tier, politically motivated justice system that we've all witnessed. We'll have a prosperity that
00:03:20.720
will come from our ability to develop our resources. So it's really important that you talk to your
00:03:25.680
neighbors, to your colleagues, to anybody you meet about the incredible advantages that will flow
00:03:31.120
to Albertans through independence. Everywhere we go, we're speaking to pack calls full of Albertans in
00:03:36.960
favor of independence. The other thing people need to understand is all of these what's next calls that
00:03:41.680
Danielle is holding, you know, more than 50 or 60 percent of everybody showing up at those meetings
00:03:48.720
are in favor of independence. And the support is only increasing. Here's the part the mainstream media
00:03:55.040
never talks about. The people. Grassroots groups like the Alberta Prosperity Project are out there
00:04:01.600
every week, holding rallies and town halls, filling up rooms with Albertans hungry for independence.
00:04:08.960
They're not waiting around for Ottawa to grow a conscience. They're educating people, showing the
00:04:14.720
benefits of going it alone. And it's not just Alberta. Saskatchewan has groups like United Grassroots
00:04:21.760
pushing for sovereignty too. Hundreds of folks are showing up from small prairie towns to big centers.
00:04:29.040
And the energy is undeniable. People know the ship called Canada is sinking. And they don't plan to go
00:04:36.480
down with it. They're ready to build something better, something freer, something that respects them for a change.
00:04:43.840
You know, we see ourselves as an independence movement, wanting to form an independent
00:04:49.920
commonwealth, separate and apart from Canada and the United States, but with extremely strong financial
00:04:56.720
and economic ties to the United States, because we see the US as our natural ally, you know, unlike Mark
00:05:02.960
Carney, who sees communist China as his natural ally. Here's the simple truth that Eastern Canada just
00:05:10.480
can't seem to wrap their head around. Albertans see Americans as family. The trade, the culture,
00:05:18.960
the values, it's all connected. Meanwhile, Ottawa and the Eastern elites push their tired America bad
00:05:27.520
propaganda, like we're supposed to see the US as some enemy. Give me a break. Out West people see right
00:05:35.200
through the nonsense. In fact, Albertans are the least likely in all of Canada to hold negative
00:05:42.720
opinions about our neighbors to the south. And Saskatchewan? Same story. Prairie people have
00:05:49.520
common sense. They know who their real allies are, and it sure isn't a federal government that treats
00:05:56.080
them like second-class citizens while cozying up to China. It's the Americans. Our closest friends,
00:06:03.440
our partners, and maybe soon our fellow countrymen, possibly. Separation from Canada. It is something
00:06:10.720
that has come up since the Liberals were given another term in government, particularly in Saskatchewan
00:06:16.880
and Alberta, with some frustrated with what they view as out-of-touch policies around energy and the
00:06:22.720
environment created in Ottawa that don't benefit the West. The petition's signature threshold for a
00:06:29.440
separation referendum has been lowered in Alberta, and a referendum petition is making the rounds here
00:06:35.920
at home too. But is separation actually possible? Well, for the answer, we have turned to Gerard Kennedy.
00:06:42.880
He is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta. Gerard, thank you so much
00:06:48.560
for joining us. My pleasure. So what has to actually be done in order for separation to happen?
00:06:55.680
Well, under the Constitution of Canada, one province has no right to leave unilaterally.
00:07:02.400
So even if there were a referendum that reported to prescribe separation, that would not give the
00:07:10.640
province in which the referendum occurred the legal right to leave. Having said that, the Supreme Court
00:07:17.040
did hold in 1998, that if a clear majority on a clear question votes to leave Confederation, and they
00:07:26.720
had Quebec in mind, but the logic would apply just as much or almost as much to Alberta and Saskatchewan,
00:07:33.200
then an obligation would fall upon the federal government to negotiate in good faith the exit.
00:07:40.400
So basically, that's never happened. And those are qualitative rather than quantitative criteria.
00:07:47.760
So we don't know precisely what would happen. But what's absolutely clear is the majority would have
00:07:52.800
to be clear, and the question would have to be clear. It couldn't engage in hypotheticals.
00:07:57.680
So a bit of work, obviously, to be done there. But, you know, hypothetically, if that work was done,
00:08:03.440
and a vote came down to it, is it possible for a province to essentially become its own country?
00:08:11.120
And how would that look? Now, if Saskatchewan or Alberta were simply to declare themselves
00:08:18.000
independent states, and other states were to recognize them as independent states, and the
00:08:23.280
government of Canada ceased to have any control over Saskatchewan or Alberta, it may be that, de facto,
00:08:29.600
they would become independent states as a matter of international law. And the Supreme Court did
00:08:34.800
acknowledge that that was a possibility. It might not necessarily be constitutional. And given how
00:08:42.240
other states tend not to recognize breakaway provinces, unless the federal government has condoned the
00:08:50.000
departure, I don't think that's very likely. But I mean, theoretically, it could happen de facto,
00:08:59.360
The Montevideo Convention on States' Rights and Duties, stipulates the following statehood criteria.
00:09:09.760
A permanent population, living in a specific territory, under a government's control, capable
00:09:15.600
of establishing international relations. Even if a new entity meets the Montevideo statehood criteria,
00:09:22.480
it will still seek acceptance from other countries. In addition to admission to international
00:09:28.080
organizations and access to capital markets, external recognition offers legitimacy and allows
00:09:34.320
foreign relations with the world. If Washington chooses to recognize Alberta and Saskatchewan,
00:09:41.280
overnight, they become de facto new nations. Economically, these two provinces are incredibly
00:09:47.600
valuable to Canada, but they haven't been treated as such. They've actually been used as cash cows for
00:09:54.320
decades and decades. And historically, these were two provinces that weren't, they didn't negotiate
00:10:00.720
their way into Canada. Instead, they were assimilated as colonies, basically. So the people of Alberta,
00:10:08.000
Albertans and Saskatchewans have now realized that there's no, there's simply no way to negotiate a better
00:10:15.600
deal with Canada. They've been trying for decades and decades and it just hasn't happened.
00:10:20.400
Are we the underdogs in all of this? A hundred percent. But so were the American founding fathers.
00:10:28.240
So were the Irish when they left Great Britain. So were the people of Taiwan when they walked away
00:10:35.040
from communist China. And so was Brexit. None of it was supposed to happen. And then it happened.
00:10:42.000
I like our odds. Alberta independence is up to Albertans. If Albertans want it, it'll 100% happen.
