00:00:34.040so this just happened and honestly it's about time because for the last few years we've all
00:00:43.840been watching this unfold and thinking the same thing how is this even a debate like seriously
00:00:49.720how did we get to a point where something so basic had to be argued at the highest levels of sport
00:00:56.200And yet, here we are. Now the Olympics, yes, the Olympics, just stepped in finally and said, all right, we're drawing a line here. They've introduced a new policy for the women's category based on biological criteria, the way it should have always been.
00:01:13.480And you're seeing the reaction already. People are calling this a major victory for common sense.
00:01:20.600And I get why. Because let's be clear for a second. Common sense lately hasn't been very common.
00:01:28.140Things that used to just be understood suddenly became controversial.
00:01:32.800And people started getting called all kinds of things just for asking simple questions like, is this fair?
00:01:38.600And that's really what this all comes down to. Fairness, not politics, not anything else, just fairness in competition.
00:01:50.220Let's bring in our sports correspondent, Rob Harris, who joins me now.
00:01:55.500So, Rob, this affects transgender athletes, those who are biological men who identify as women who've been competing in some female categories,
00:02:03.540and also affects those women in those categories
00:02:06.440who felt that this was an unfair situation.
00:02:09.000Yes, this is a landmark decision by the International Olympic Committee
00:02:12.400banning transgender women from women's events at the Olympics.
00:02:16.520So only biological women will be allowed to compete
00:02:20.300from 2028, the LA Olympics and onwards in those women's categories.
00:02:25.920It comes particular after pressure from Donald Trump just last night.
00:02:30.700he was speaking about this, saying that men playing in women's sports should not be allowed.
00:02:35.560That's very important. We added a couple. No men playing in women's sports. We don't want that.
00:02:41.080Nobody does. I think it's about a 98 percent issue. We want no transgender mutilation of our
00:02:47.860children. Very basic things that you wouldn't even think we'd be talking about 15 or 20 years ago.
00:02:53.440Now, we have been hearing from the International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry,
00:02:58.480And she said that the policy, the new one, is based on science and has been led by medical experts.
00:03:06.020At the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat.
00:03:12.020So it is absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category.
00:03:57.200Sports are built on categories for a reason. Weight classes, divisions, age groups. It's all about making competition fair. So applying that same logic here, that's not extreme. That's just consistency.
00:04:14.620Now, politically, this is something as controversial as it gets, and it's been talked about a lot.
00:04:20.900Even Trump said that this was something he would tackle very early, making sure women's sports are protected and clearly defined.
00:04:29.040And now you're seeing that direction show up on the global stage.
00:04:33.500And then I added two things. We call them best of. You know what they are? Best of Trump. These are the best of.
