Real Coffee with Scott Adams - Episode 1005 Scott Adams： My Goodness, So Much News. Let's Talk.

00:00:00.000 Well, let's look at the beautiful view and get ready for No Coffee with Scott Adams.

00:00:10.880 We've got a loyal dog. She seems like she's stuffed, but I can promise you, there you go.

00:00:19.300 She's actually a real dog. She can move. 0.99

00:00:23.580 Sit down. Go back to sleep.

00:00:25.840 All right. Well, we've got a lot to talk about.

00:00:32.080 Has there ever been a newsier day?

00:00:35.940 Alexa, turn on studio. 1.00

00:00:41.920 Or not. There, that's better.

00:00:46.000 Yes, yes, yes. We've got all kinds of news. Let's jump right into it.

00:00:50.000 First of all, Trump has decided he's leaving the World Health Organization.

00:00:55.840 Now, maybe it's still negotiating, because I'm sure if they gave him what he wanted, he would get back in.

00:01:05.340 But I think it's a strong move, because Trump always does the thing that everybody says, well, you can't do that.

00:01:12.820 And then he does it.

00:01:13.880 And then people say, okay, that worked.

00:01:17.960 Like closing travel from China.

00:01:20.260 People said, you can't do that.

00:01:22.620 And then it worked out.

00:01:24.460 There are a lot of things he does that people say, you can't do that.

00:01:27.600 You can't negotiate a trade deal with China.

00:01:30.380 They'll be mad.

00:01:32.360 And then he just does.

00:01:34.340 Looks like it didn't work out.

00:01:35.640 So I think the real problem with China is that they're not buying the American goods they said they would, because things are so tense.

00:01:46.420 So if China is not going to buy the goods that they promised to buy, I think we have nothing left to do with them.

00:01:54.360 It's time.

00:01:55.520 It's time to organize the rest of the world against China, which it looks like we're doing. 0.99

00:02:01.200 So there's some thought about turning the G7 into a G10, bringing in a few more countries to bolster the collective power versus China.

00:02:13.160 So that's all good.

00:02:14.640 I would say that's all positive for the United States.

00:02:19.420 So the president, of course, used some terms which he knows will get his critics buzzing.

00:02:28.820 One of them was, when the looting starts, the shooting starts.

00:02:33.920 Now, CNN and the other completely disreputable people are saying, well, it's clearly a racial message.

00:02:43.080 To which I say, do you think Trump knew that?

00:02:47.260 Come on.

00:02:49.260 Do you think Trump knew that, that it had some racial overtones?

00:02:53.440 Because looting is not a racial term, and shooting is not a racial term, and I'm watching the riots.

00:03:03.080 And to me, it looks like there are 10 white people to every one black person.

00:03:08.800 Are you watching the same riots I am?

00:03:11.680 All the riots I'm watching, there are way more white people in the protest slash situation. 0.65

00:03:18.020 So when the president says, when the looting starts, the shooting starts, you have to really kind of work at it to make that a racial thing.

00:03:28.740 And then he also calls them thugs, which again, there were about 10 white people for every black person in attendance.

00:03:38.140 And thugs is just a word.

00:03:43.680 And so far, CNN has turned this into wall-to-wall coverage about the Trump's racism.

00:03:50.420 So much so, that they actually ran the find people hoax again.

00:03:55.540 So Jake Tapper actually ran, you know, a clip piece on his show,

00:04:01.360 in which he was showing all the assumed examples of the president's racism.

00:04:05.360 And, of course, none of them are real.

00:04:07.760 It's just a laundry list of things that didn't happen or misinterpreted.

00:04:12.180 But the find people hoax was still on the list.

00:04:15.540 Still on the list.

00:04:16.980 So I finally had to give up with Jake.

00:04:19.060 So I blocked him.

00:04:21.100 I'm just never going to deal with him again. 1.00

00:04:23.140 Fucking piece of shit, really. 1.00

00:04:25.360 Because I was giving him the benefit of a doubt. 1.00

00:04:28.480 Because I had talked to him personally.

00:04:32.360 And I had explained to him what the find people hoax was about.

00:04:37.760 And, indeed, he's even said it himself once on his show.

00:04:41.220 He said that the president, at the same time, said that he completely disavows the racists.

00:04:48.580 Which is the part that usually gets cut out.

00:04:50.920 But I don't think there's any excuse at this point.

00:04:53.980 You know, there was a time when you could say, well, maybe they really think that's what happened.

00:04:59.740 But once you show them the transcript, it's pretty obvious it didn't happen.

00:05:05.200 But still reporting it today is just too far.

00:05:08.800 I mean, that's just race baiting.

00:05:11.440 And I don't have any patience for it.

00:05:13.700 I don't think you can be a good person and do what they're doing.

00:05:16.800 I just don't think you can.

00:05:18.220 So I'm sorry, Jake.

00:05:19.060 I wanted to think you were a good person, but you've proved otherwise, sadly.

00:05:26.820 So I'm cutting him out of my life forever.

00:05:29.920 Not that we had much connection.

00:05:31.840 We did the cartoon thing for charity a few times, but that was it.

00:05:38.880 I'm really disappointed.

00:05:40.520 I'm disappointed that it even exists.

00:05:44.980 You know, that we're even in this place.

00:05:46.300 But if you're watching the news, and probably maybe you didn't see it on CNN for a while until it was over,

00:05:54.220 but CNN was not reporting the news.

00:05:56.720 The CNN's headquarters in Atlanta was surrounded by protesters,

00:06:01.300 and they were destroying the big CNN logo statue or whatever you want to call it that was outside.

00:06:08.120 They're just ripping it on and doing graffiti on it, breaking windows, I think, at least one window.

00:06:13.320 And you might say to yourself, uh, why would they attack CNN, right?

00:06:23.240 Why would you attack CNN?

00:06:25.880 Because isn't CNN supporting you in every way?

00:06:31.520 Well, here's my speculation.

00:06:36.280 CNN has been whipping up racial animosity for years.

00:06:45.560 What if they succeeded and they got their racial animosity?

00:06:50.960 If they succeeded in making it racial, I'm not sure people see political party anymore. 0.85

00:06:57.140 Because once you make it racial, it's just racial. 0.53

00:07:02.140 The politics sort of is the second most important part.

00:07:06.600 But once the most important part is overwhelming everything else,

00:07:10.980 congratulations, CNN.

00:07:13.080 You took something that didn't need to be racial, because we're mostly on the same side.

00:07:17.980 But with the shooting, with the shooting especially, this latest shooting of George Lloyd,

00:07:24.280 the president is aggressively and unambiguously on the side of the protesters.

00:07:30.220 He was saying it was a, you know, bad deal, bad cop.

00:07:34.560 You know, he says, respect the memory of George Lloyd.

00:07:37.900 He couldn't be more on their side.

00:07:40.100 That maybe they noticed, because, you know, it's hard to not notice the president, right?

00:07:47.720 But don't you think that there's just a general hatred of white people who are elites in power?

00:07:57.060 I think CNN created a situation where they've weaponized the public against themselves.

00:08:05.100 Because in the CNN world, there's this difference between Fox News and CNN.

00:08:10.100 But I think we're learning that that's only in the heads of people who watch a lot of news.

00:08:16.520 Apparently, if you don't watch a lot of news, it's just white people in power.

00:08:23.200 And that's what it looked like.

00:08:25.120 So, again, I think there were 10 to 1 white people to black people protesting at CNN, too,

00:08:31.320 based on just looking at the crowd.

00:08:33.000 But I think they all got whipped up into this thought that it's the powerful white people

00:08:40.080 who have, you know, the control of things who are the bad guys.

00:08:44.520 So I think they created themselves as bad guys.

00:08:49.200 Because how else can you explain that they would go after CNN?

00:08:51.840 Now, somebody had a good counter-theory, which is you go where the cameras are.

00:08:57.860 But any place that's populated, that you have a big crowd, the cameras are going to get there.

00:09:03.440 So the CNN thing kind of came from left field, but you can kind of almost understand it.

00:09:09.860 Because they've been actively agitating for a race war without realizing that they might be the victims of it,

00:09:18.580 that people might turn on them.

00:09:20.800 And it looks like at least a little bit that happened.

00:09:25.020 So the president said he's going to treat Hong Kong as part of China and no longer treat it like it's special,

00:09:30.900 which I think is just practical.

00:09:35.480 Well, it's just, unfortunately, there's just nothing anybody can do.

00:09:40.060 There's nothing the United States can do.

00:09:42.180 There's nothing Hong Kong can do.

00:09:44.100 That they're geographically doomed to be controlled by China, and that's what's happening. 0.99

00:09:52.320 On a normal day, this would have been the biggest story, but it just gets lost in the shovel,

00:09:57.320 that the actual Flynn phone call transcripts where he was talking to Kislyak, the Russian,

00:10:03.060 and the very thing that got him arrested and convicted, turns out there's no evidence in it.

00:10:11.680 There's no evidence.

00:10:13.280 The thing that got him convicted, when you actually see it, there's no evidence.

00:10:20.760 No evidence of a lie.

00:10:22.720 No evidence of anything.

00:10:24.780 It was just the most normal phone call in the world in which not much happened.

00:10:29.180 That's it.

00:10:29.560 Now that we see the actual words, you can see that the whole thing was a little bit sketchy.

00:10:36.640 It gets sketchier every day.

00:10:38.600 So, there's at least some thought that there's another shoe to drop.

00:10:47.680 I don't want to report that yet, because I won't hear it from other sources.

00:10:50.920 But there's some other really interesting stuff on this story that might be coming out really soon.

00:10:57.500 It might involve some other personalities that are not very popular among Trump people.

00:11:04.600 We'll wait for that.

00:11:05.500 Minnesota governor said today that sunlight is a disinfectant.

00:11:12.580 Which is weird to see a governor suggest that you drink bleach to stop looting.

00:11:19.580 Oh, that's not how you interpret that?

00:11:22.040 I've been trained by CNN to interpret the news this way.

00:11:25.760 Anyway, if a politician says sunlight is a disinfectant, I should translate that into my mind as the governor is recommending that you drink bleach because it would stop looting.

00:11:40.120 Did I do it wrong?

00:11:41.480 I'm pretty sure that's right.

00:11:43.480 I've been watching CNN do this for a long time.

00:11:45.600 I think I got it right.

00:11:46.580 Did you see the video of the guy with the umbrella?

00:11:57.180 This is the best story on the internet.

00:12:01.740 If you haven't seen this yet, you've got a good story to look forward to.

00:12:07.040 Alright, so there's a video of an unidentified tall white guy.

00:12:12.860 You can tell he's white because he turns and looks at you, even though he has a professional gas mask on.

00:12:18.280 But you can see his eyes, so you can tell he's a white guy.

00:12:22.200 He's a big white guy, tall guy, and he's got an umbrella and a hammer.

00:12:29.340 Now here's what's interesting about the guy with the umbrella and the hammer and the full gas mask.

00:12:34.820 And they're all black, so he's completely unidentified.

00:12:38.420 He walks up with his hammer to the AutoZone store, the one you saw burning in Minnesota, 0.53

00:12:44.580 and he's the guy who initially knocked down all the windows.

00:12:48.280 So he walks up to it nonchalantly, like he's not even one of the protesters,

00:12:53.780 like he's not even angry about anything, like he has, it's not an act of passion,

00:12:59.640 it's not an act where he got caught up with a crowd.

00:13:02.500 He's all by himself, comes out of the shadows, breaks these windows like, almost like a professional,

00:13:11.500 like he was just doing a job.

00:13:13.520 Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.

00:13:15.280 As soon as he breaks a few windows, which history will record, was the beginning of the looting.

00:13:22.740 Because until those windows were broken, I don't believe there was any looting going on.

00:13:29.240 But once they were broken, well, you know, the window's gone.

00:13:33.540 And so the man with the umbrella and the hammer and the gas mask starts walking away.

00:13:42.640 Some of the people who were there, including one, I'm guessing maybe late teenagers, early 20s, something,

00:13:50.240 African-American man tries to stop him and also accuses him of being a cop.

00:13:57.280 So in other words, the locals, the people who were actually protesting,

00:14:02.720 the actual protesters said, wait a minute, you're not one of us.

00:14:08.620 Now, people are saying he's a cop, and I don't think there's evidence of that.

00:14:13.880 But there is certainly evidence that he wanted to start a riot or start some looting.

00:14:20.280 So, why would he have an umbrella?

00:14:24.580 Anybody? Anybody?

00:14:25.900 Why did he have an umbrella?

00:14:28.460 Why did he have an umbrella?

00:14:31.160 If you get why he had an umbrella, you're going to be a lot closer to the answer to the question.

00:14:37.260 Why do you have an umbrella?

00:14:39.140 I'm waiting for somebody in the comments.

00:14:43.300 If you don't know this, you're going to have a surprise coming.

00:14:48.680 Why the umbrella?

00:14:51.280 I'm looking, looking.

00:14:53.180 If you're playing along at home, we're not seeing anybody answering the question.

00:14:57.760 Why the umbrella?

00:15:00.300 Well, I guess you don't know, so I'm going to tell you the answer.

00:15:04.300 It's because of drones and because of security cameras.

00:15:09.920 The umbrella takes care of any drones that could take a picture of his face,

00:15:15.420 as well as any security cameras that might have had a downshot.

00:15:19.240 Now, he's the only one I saw who had a full mask that covered every part of him, including his hair.

00:15:25.740 So he was completely unidentifiable.

00:15:27.740 I don't believe there was any exposed skin except a little bit of his eyeballs, you can see.

00:15:33.840 So the umbrella tells me that this was somebody who was prepared.

00:15:40.180 And he was not prepared like a protester.

00:15:43.540 He was prepared like a person with a specific mission.

00:15:46.740 So, no, I don't think it was to disguise the hammer because the hammer was this big.

00:15:53.100 You know, he could stick it under his coat pretty easily.

00:15:55.500 Yes, so he didn't want to be caught by cameras, and he came prepared for that.

00:16:03.620 Nobody else had an umbrella.

00:16:05.640 There's no protester who had an umbrella.

00:16:08.060 He came to cause some trouble.

00:16:11.060 He seemed a little bit too prepared, meaning he looked like a professional to me.

00:16:16.660 Now, what kind of professional?

00:16:19.980 Intelligence agents from another country?

00:16:23.980 How hard would it be for the Russians to send somebody there?

00:16:28.720 Now, I think that he spoke to the African-American man who was chasing him down to figure out what was going on.

00:16:37.720 I think he talked to him.

00:16:39.420 So at least there's one person who would know if he had an accent, but I don't think he did,

00:16:43.520 because I think we can hear a little bit on the video.

00:16:45.940 So I sounded American.

00:16:49.160 And he did say he was going to take a go at the guy, because he was much bigger than the guy who was chasing him.

00:16:56.060 And then he just walked away.

00:16:58.720 Yeah, he was a professional of some sort.

00:17:02.040 So when you say that there was rioting going on, you can't leave him out of the story.

00:17:08.260 You can't leave him out of the story.

00:17:10.560 He caused it.

00:17:12.780 Who was he?

00:17:13.760 We want to know.

00:17:15.920 All right.

00:17:17.940 That was interesting.

00:17:23.500 There's something good happening and something bad happening at the same time.

00:17:28.720 And I'm going to get into that a little bit.

00:17:30.980 But first, I want to ask you about how confident you are that what you saw on the video of the cop killing George Floyd,

00:17:41.860 how confident are you that what you saw in that video, I mean, you saw it with your own eyes.

00:17:47.620 Lots of people saw it.

00:17:49.060 There were eyewitnesses.

00:17:49.540 How confident are you that what you saw gives you an accurate impression of what happened?

00:17:56.620 Because if you say to yourself, I know what happened because I saw it on video and I saw it with my own eyes, you have learned nothing.

00:18:07.240 You've learned nothing.

00:18:09.120 Where have you been for the last four years?

00:18:11.060 If there's anything that is guaranteed to be true, it's the video lies.

00:18:16.620 Now, did the video lie so much that there was no crime committed?

00:18:21.060 I doubt it because it looked like a crime to me.

00:18:23.840 So I'm going to be very careful when I talk about this next topic because it'll be real easy for somebody to take me out of context.

00:18:31.480 It looked to me like murder.

00:18:32.960 It looked to you like murder.

00:18:36.520 We all think it looked like murder.

00:18:38.880 I think.

00:18:40.800 Then we learned from the autopsy that he didn't die from the knee on his neck.

00:18:47.820 At least that wasn't the single cause.

00:18:50.180 He didn't have a sign of asphyxiation.

00:18:53.220 What?

00:18:53.740 Now, the speculation, subject to more study, is that what killed him was probably some combination of effects.

00:19:04.680 Probably something about the way he was restrained, something about the way they were on top of him,

00:19:10.040 something about the intoxicants, perhaps.

00:19:13.000 We don't know if or what he had in them.

00:19:15.840 Something about underlying conditions.

00:19:17.980 He had a heart condition and hypertension, and it was a tense situation.

00:19:21.540 Maybe all of those things.

00:19:25.120 Maybe it was a combination of all of those things.

00:19:28.240 But apparently he was not asphyxiated or strangled by the knee.

00:19:35.560 They say they can tell.

00:19:37.540 Can they tell?

00:19:38.280 They seem pretty confident about it, but they said they can tell.

00:19:42.280 Now, does the video lie?

00:19:46.040 Well, the video I saw when I made my decision that he was clearly and obviously a murderer

00:19:53.080 murdering a guy right in front of us, the video I saw showed only one person on the suspect.

00:20:00.500 That's the one you saw, too.

00:20:01.920 Just one person.

00:20:03.400 He had his knee on the guy's neck.

00:20:07.240 But then we saw, later we saw a reverse view, and it shows that there were three cops on him.

00:20:12.860 One was on the neck, one was, I think, more on the back, and one was sort of controlling the legs.

00:20:19.460 So that's what we saw.

00:20:21.120 Now, that's very different than one guy on him, right?

00:20:24.920 So if you said to yourself, okay, I saw this video, I'd know exactly what happened.

00:20:30.740 It was that cop.

00:20:32.040 He killed the guy.

00:20:33.580 What you didn't see is right behind the bumper were two other cops on him.

00:20:38.640 What's up with that?

00:20:39.660 Now it gets a little more complicated, because I didn't see that in the first video.

00:20:46.260 Do you know what else you didn't see?

00:20:48.180 You didn't see any video of just before they took him down.

00:20:53.100 You saw the video when he first got out of the car, and you saw the video when it was like

00:20:58.440 a few minutes before the end of the man's life.

00:21:01.320 What you didn't see is why three cops were on top of him.

00:21:05.580 Now, I'm not going to say that excuses anybody.

00:21:09.920 So here's, I'm going to block anybody who imagines that I'm saying the cops are innocent, okay?

00:21:17.780 And I know that's going to happen.

00:21:19.180 Somebody in the comments is going to say, oh, you're saying they're innocent.

00:21:23.440 I'm not saying that.

00:21:24.420 I'm just talking about the facts we know and the facts we don't know.

00:21:27.180 So I will block you the moment you imagine I'm saying that, okay?

00:21:32.840 So, let's look at what we've got here.

00:21:36.700 We're going to the whiteboard.

00:21:38.760 Here's the, here's, I don't know if it's the simulation winking at us, but this might be

00:21:46.500 more good news than bad, what I'm going to show you next.

00:21:49.300 Remember when Kaepernick did his protest and he famously took a knee?

00:21:55.040 And that, of course, created great division in the country.

00:21:58.740 People on the right said, oh, you're disrespecting our country.

00:22:02.540 People on the left said, well, there's a good reason.

00:22:04.940 It's a perfectly legitimate protest.

00:22:07.540 And so there was great division in the country.

00:22:09.740 And so that lasted a while.

00:22:12.240 Never really healed.

00:22:13.600 It was just sort of, we stopped talking about it for a while. 0.94

00:22:16.260 Now we have this situation where the policeman kills a black man by putting a knee on his neck.

00:22:24.920 Now, when I tweeted about this, some people thought I was joking. 0.80

00:22:29.180 This isn't funny.

00:22:30.880 Why would this be funny?

00:22:32.700 It's murder or something like it.

00:22:35.080 I mean, somebody got killed.

00:22:36.600 Nothing funny about that.

00:22:38.700 It is, however, potentially powerful and powerful in this specific way.

00:22:45.400 That nobody in the world can miss the show.

00:22:50.820 Because the weirdness that's baked into it, that the protest would be taking a knee,

00:22:57.280 and then sort of what I would call the final straw,

00:23:00.560 the moment when every single white person said,

00:23:03.820 oh, okay, that's what you're talking about.

00:23:06.280 Now, some of us were already there, many of us were already there,

00:23:11.300 that the police can sometimes be abusive.

00:23:16.360 We all know that that's true.

00:23:18.860 We hope it's not the majority, but we know it's true. 1.00

00:23:22.700 At this point,

00:23:25.000 I think the entire country got, I don't know,

00:23:29.140 red-pilled or white-pilled or whatever pill it is.

00:23:32.200 Because what exactly is going through your head?

00:23:36.260 So here's the question.

00:23:37.620 What is going through your head

00:23:38.920 when you go to protest racial discrimination,

00:23:43.480 especially with the police,

00:23:44.940 and you show up in the city,

00:23:46.700 and there are more white people there to protest with you

00:23:49.740 than there are black people?

00:23:52.620 Now, are you seeing the same thing I'm seeing?

00:23:54.700 There are more white people protesting this latest event

00:24:00.620 than there are black people, I think by a lot.

00:24:04.300 How do you feel if your black lives matter, 1.00

00:24:07.780 and you show up and you think it's you against,

00:24:10.540 I don't know, white people?

00:24:12.160 Who do you think is on the other side?

00:24:15.460 Who's on the other side?

00:24:16.840 Because you look around, 0.82

00:24:17.980 and the people who are supporting you are all white people.

00:24:19.780 I think this is the point

00:24:22.540 when there's sort of a recognition

00:24:24.640 that this was more a problem about the press,

00:24:28.640 how they whip us into a hysteria,

00:24:30.540 how they frame things,

00:24:31.840 and the police need some help.

00:24:35.080 Now, they may need some help

00:24:36.620 no matter who they're stopping.

00:24:38.060 This doesn't mean they need some help

00:24:39.440 racially specifically,

00:24:42.300 but it does mean

00:24:43.660 that maybe they need a little extra work

00:24:45.760 on making sure that this doesn't happen

00:24:48.480 no matter who gets stopped.

00:24:50.240 But I think there's something magical

00:24:52.740 about the fact

00:24:54.040 that there's this weird coincidence

00:24:56.220 built into the story.

00:24:57.620 I mean, it's a really weird coincidence

00:24:59.080 that a knee,

00:25:01.440 which is so powerful in our minds,

00:25:04.520 you know, the way we think of knees,

00:25:06.260 it has to do with submission,

00:25:07.800 it has to do with, you know,

00:25:09.740 somebody having power over another one.

00:25:12.240 It's just every bad image

00:25:14.260 is sort of baked into knees.

00:25:15.720 So because this is so powerful

00:25:19.160 and because I think the entire country

00:25:21.440 is on the same side,

00:25:23.580 did you see that there were protesters

00:25:25.820 who went to the White House?

00:25:27.940 The president was completely on their side

00:25:31.860 from the jump.

00:25:34.780 There was no hesitation.

00:25:35.920 He was always on the side of the protesters.

00:25:39.300 And in fact, you know,

00:25:40.440 the Department of Justice is acting on it.

00:25:43.920 So who's on the other side?

00:25:47.500 Who's on the other side?

00:25:49.380 There's nobody on the other side.

00:25:51.180 And I think that

00:25:52.000 maybe Kaepernick

00:25:55.180 is the big winner

00:25:56.560 in a weird way.

00:25:58.840 The big winner

00:25:59.760 because he looks right.

00:26:02.880 All right.

00:26:03.140 Now here's the part

00:26:03.780 where I'll get in trouble,

00:26:04.880 but I can't get canceled.

00:26:06.260 So I'm going to do it anyway.

00:26:08.940 As we're trying to figure out

00:26:10.420 what really happened there,

00:26:12.340 I like to build a grid

00:26:14.620 so I can see,

00:26:16.160 I can work through

00:26:17.080 my own thinking about it.

00:26:18.920 So this has more to do

00:26:20.180 with a way of thinking of things.

00:26:22.460 So if the only thing

00:26:23.620 you got out of it is,

00:26:24.820 oh, that's a good way

00:26:26.200 to think of a complicated thing,

00:26:27.540 I might use that myself.

00:26:29.160 And what I do is

00:26:30.020 I just put the three

00:26:31.480 possible explanations,

00:26:34.020 and then I figure out

00:26:36.440 what we know,

00:26:37.340 which of course

00:26:37.860 is changing by the minute.

00:26:39.660 So this of course

00:26:40.560 would have to be updated

00:26:41.860 every five minutes

00:26:42.840 because we're still

00:26:43.560 in the fog of war.

00:26:44.780 But in terms of how

00:26:45.800 you would look at it,

00:26:47.200 this is a good start.

00:26:49.820 So was it something

00:26:50.740 like murder?

00:26:51.900 I guess third degree murder

00:26:53.500 is exactly what

00:26:54.760 he's been charged with

00:26:56.260 in addition to manslaughter.

00:26:58.180 And third degree murder

00:26:59.320 is defined as this

00:27:00.680 in Minnesota.

00:27:01.660 So it's different by state.

00:27:02.680 causing death of a person,

00:27:05.280 and here's the money part,

00:27:07.560 quote,

00:27:07.980 by perpetrating an act

00:27:09.580 eminently dangerous

00:27:10.980 to others

00:27:12.400 and evincing a depraved mind 0.98

00:27:15.640 without regard for life

00:27:17.220 and without intent to kill.

00:27:19.860 So it could still be murder

00:27:21.740 even if he didn't mean it.

00:27:25.180 But it would be worse

00:27:27.280 than manslaughter,

00:27:28.440 if I understand this correctly.

00:27:30.040 I could have some

00:27:30.660 of the legalities wrong.

00:27:31.920 But I think

00:27:32.940 manslaughter would be

00:27:34.000 you're just being

00:27:34.780 just an accident

00:27:36.220 that you should have

00:27:36.880 known better.

00:27:38.240 Whereas

00:27:38.680 the third degree murder

00:27:40.420 is a little worse

00:27:42.060 than that.

00:27:43.080 Meaning that

00:27:43.720 not only should it

00:27:44.720 not have happened,

00:27:45.660 not only should you

00:27:46.620 have known better,

00:27:47.560 but there was something

00:27:48.240 about your attitude

00:27:49.200 or your intentions

00:27:50.240 that seemed like

00:27:52.500 you didn't even try.

00:27:54.900 With manslaughter,

00:27:56.180 it's a little bit more

00:27:57.100 like an accident

00:27:57.840 that you should have

00:27:58.680 known better.

00:27:59.160 whereas this one

00:28:00.720 is not an accident

00:28:02.400 necessarily.

00:28:03.660 It's just you didn't care

00:28:04.680 or you just didn't even

00:28:06.420 do the minimum

00:28:07.060 that you needed

00:28:07.660 to keep somebody

00:28:08.520 from dying.

00:28:10.400 All right,

00:28:10.980 so here's what we know.

00:28:12.620 Did the police

00:28:13.400 follow procedures?

00:28:15.900 You would say

00:28:16.800 no, right?

00:28:18.080 Wouldn't you say no?

00:28:18.900 No?

00:28:18.960 I think you might

00:28:21.020 be surprised.

00:28:22.980 If it goes to trial,

00:28:25.280 I think you might

00:28:26.100 be surprised

00:28:27.080 that it's closer

00:28:28.920 to yes.

00:28:30.440 And the only reason

00:28:31.200 I can say that

00:28:32.120 is that the autopsy,

00:28:33.860 at least preliminarily,

00:28:35.860 says he was not killed

00:28:37.100 by the knee on the neck.

00:28:39.020 So if the knee on the neck 0.82

00:28:40.500 didn't kill him

00:28:41.620 and there were

00:28:42.980 four officers there,

00:28:45.320 none of them

00:28:45.960 seemed to be protesting

00:28:47.100 what anybody else

00:28:48.140 was doing,

00:28:49.800 that suggests

00:28:50.720 that they probably

00:28:51.760 all thought

00:28:52.200 they were doing

00:28:52.740 something close

00:28:53.640 to the procedure.

00:28:55.140 Now,

00:28:55.580 can you put a knee

00:28:56.620 on somebody's neck

00:28:57.620 and have two other

00:28:59.360 officers hold them down

00:29:00.660 if they were resisting

00:29:01.800 arrest,

00:29:03.280 which, by the way,

00:29:04.360 is not in evidence?

00:29:06.320 So, so far,

00:29:07.380 there's no evidence

00:29:08.420 that George Floyd

00:29:09.920 was resisting arrest.

00:29:11.820 That's not in evidence.

00:29:14.200 But,

00:29:15.220 later if it became

00:29:16.700 in evidence,

00:29:18.140 suppose the missing video,

00:29:20.160 the few minutes,

00:29:20.820 the minute just before

00:29:21.840 the police took him down,

00:29:23.600 suppose we,

00:29:24.560 suppose somebody finds that.

00:29:27.540 And suppose it looked like

00:29:28.680 there was some resisting.

00:29:30.540 If there was resisting,

00:29:32.840 just moments before they,

00:29:34.840 the three of them

00:29:35.540 were trying to hold them down,

00:29:37.880 then it's going to look

00:29:38.860 a lot closer

00:29:39.620 to they followed procedure.

00:29:40.940 because, remember,

00:29:43.260 the knee on the neck

00:29:44.480 didn't kill him.

00:29:46.760 Whatever it was,

00:29:47.860 was probably a combination

00:29:49.100 of things

00:29:50.000 which the police

00:29:51.660 would not necessarily

00:29:53.360 know was happening.

00:29:54.960 Now, the next thing

00:29:55.660 you say to yourself is,

00:29:57.120 but Scott,

00:29:58.260 he was saying,

00:29:59.400 you're killing me.

00:30:00.820 He said it directly, 0.59

00:30:02.240 repeatedly.

00:30:03.360 The witnesses heard it.

00:30:04.680 How in the world

00:30:06.760 do the police

00:30:07.580 not give him help

00:30:08.660 when he's saying,

00:30:09.600 I can't breathe,

00:30:10.440 I'm dying?

00:30:12.540 I don't know.

00:30:14.160 But I would ask you this.

00:30:16.180 How often do the police

00:30:17.620 hear that kind of complaint?

00:30:20.320 My guess

00:30:21.180 is that it's common.

00:30:23.540 And maybe they just learn

00:30:25.100 not to take it seriously

00:30:26.240 unless they see

00:30:27.460 a little bit more evidence

00:30:28.660 that it's real.

00:30:29.280 So, suppose they just

00:30:32.720 didn't take it seriously.

00:30:34.580 They didn't kill him

00:30:35.980 by putting their pressure

00:30:37.100 on the neck.

00:30:39.180 This is all just suppose.

00:30:40.840 I'm not saying it's true.

00:30:42.400 Everything could change.

00:30:44.420 It's going to look like 1.00

00:30:45.400 maybe they were just dumb. 1.00

00:30:48.880 They thought they were 1.00

00:30:49.700 following the procedures

00:30:50.660 and they should have been

00:30:51.640 a little bit more aware

00:30:52.840 of the situation.

00:30:54.680 So, it's going to look 1.00

00:30:55.960 like stupidity. 1.00

00:30:56.740 What about the autopsy? 1.00

00:30:59.560 The autopsy seems to have

00:31:00.980 ruled out intentional murder

00:31:02.800 because if it had been

00:31:04.440 intentional murder

00:31:05.340 we would have a specific cause.

00:31:07.400 Oh, you did this.

00:31:09.540 But not necessarily

00:31:10.760 that third degree murder

00:31:11.980 which is more closer

00:31:13.080 to manslaughter.

00:31:14.140 So, is manslaughter ruled out?

00:31:15.680 No.

00:31:16.620 No.

00:31:17.520 Because just because

00:31:18.540 they didn't kill him

00:31:19.660 on the neck part

00:31:20.680 the totality of what

00:31:22.700 they were doing

00:31:23.320 apparently did kill him

00:31:24.700 unless it was

00:31:25.460 the biggest coincidence

00:31:26.320 in the world

00:31:26.940 and he died.

00:31:28.100 Nobody thinks he died

00:31:29.700 just coincidentally

00:31:31.320 at that very moment

00:31:32.240 from natural causes.

00:31:33.940 So, manslaughter is still in 1.00

00:31:34.960 and stupidity is still in. 1.00

00:31:37.600 What about the fact 1.00

00:31:38.780 that they did

00:31:39.400 everything they did

00:31:40.380 in front of witnesses

00:31:41.560 who had phones?

00:31:43.500 If you were planning

00:31:44.780 if your mind was on murder

00:31:47.020 would you do it

00:31:48.440 in front of witnesses

00:31:49.320 casually

00:31:50.820 all four of you

00:31:52.740 casually

00:31:53.520 while they had

00:31:54.660 their phones out?

00:31:56.120 No.

00:31:57.440 No.

00:31:58.320 Not in any world

00:31:59.440 would they be

00:32:00.640 thinking murder.

00:32:02.480 So, I think you

00:32:03.040 could eliminate

00:32:03.580 in fact the charges

00:32:04.660 the charges

00:32:05.740 do not have in them

00:32:06.920 any element

00:32:08.480 of intention.

00:32:10.240 So, intention

00:32:11.160 is not even part

00:32:12.100 of the charges.

00:32:15.000 And then there's

00:32:15.860 this part

00:32:16.960 that we just learned

00:32:17.860 that there were

00:32:18.780 three cops

00:32:19.620 on top of him.

00:32:20.540 why do you

00:32:22.660 ever have

00:32:23.300 three cops

00:32:24.080 on top of you

00:32:25.100 if you are

00:32:26.600 cooperating

00:32:27.500 with the police?

00:32:29.080 Is it because

00:32:29.880 the police

00:32:30.520 like to get

00:32:31.860 on the ground

00:32:32.600 with their

00:32:33.540 clean uniforms?

00:32:35.500 Probably not.

00:32:37.540 There's nobody

00:32:38.360 who wants to be

00:32:38.900 wrestling

00:32:39.420 with a perpetrator's

00:32:40.920 feet

00:32:41.600 on the ground

00:32:43.180 unless they've got

00:32:44.500 a pretty good reason.

00:32:45.920 Right?

00:32:46.020 So, the evidence

00:32:47.900 that we have

00:32:48.660 that there were

00:32:49.840 three cops

00:32:50.560 sitting on top

00:32:51.480 of him

00:32:51.820 neck, back

00:32:52.960 and somebody

00:32:53.480 trying to control

00:32:54.360 his feet

00:32:55.000 strongly suggests

00:32:57.400 that he was

00:32:58.940 not cooperating

00:32:59.980 a moment

00:33:00.820 before them.

00:33:02.400 Now, here's

00:33:03.680 the interesting

00:33:04.740 part

00:33:05.240 to me.

00:33:08.940 And by the way

00:33:09.580 I'll say this

00:33:10.420 every minute

00:33:11.180 or so.

00:33:12.580 It looks like

00:33:13.320 a crime was

00:33:13.980 committed to me

00:33:15.080 I'm just going

00:33:16.800 through what we

00:33:17.420 know and what

00:33:17.860 we don't know.

00:33:18.820 So, don't

00:33:20.180 confuse what we

00:33:21.680 know and what

00:33:22.120 we don't know

00:33:22.600 with my opinion.

00:33:23.520 I'll tell you

00:33:23.940 my opinion.

00:33:25.160 It looks like

00:33:25.740 he was killed.

00:33:29.500 You don't need

00:33:30.380 to explain to me

00:33:31.200 that the totality

00:33:32.480 of what the

00:33:33.080 police did

00:33:33.740 almost certainly

00:33:36.000 contributed to

00:33:36.920 the man's death.

00:33:37.920 I would say

00:33:38.380 something close

00:33:39.480 to 100%

00:33:40.240 certainty

00:33:40.720 because what

00:33:41.460 are the odds

00:33:41.880 he would die

00:33:42.280 by accident

00:33:42.780 just then?

00:33:43.540 And here's

00:33:46.200 my conspiracy

00:33:46.940 theory that

00:33:47.660 I would like

00:33:48.120 to add to

00:33:48.660 it.

00:33:50.800 Do you

00:33:51.380 believe

00:33:51.840 that the

00:33:53.720 video

00:33:54.300 that the

00:33:55.720 one video

00:33:56.300 that's missing

00:33:56.960 is the

00:33:57.800 important one?

00:33:59.220 Well,

00:33:59.580 important to

00:34:00.120 answer the

00:34:00.560 mystery.

00:34:01.540 Why is it

00:34:02.160 that we have

00:34:02.740 good video

00:34:04.000 of before

00:34:05.540 that

00:34:06.060 and we have

00:34:07.480 good video

00:34:08.380 after he's

00:34:09.040 on the ground

00:34:09.860 but the

00:34:11.460 part that

00:34:12.400 caused three

00:34:13.240 police officers

00:34:14.100 to be on

00:34:14.700 top of him

00:34:15.420 we do not

00:34:16.720 have that

00:34:17.180 video.

00:34:18.340 Does that

00:34:19.160 seem like

00:34:19.660 an accident?

00:34:22.620 Let me

00:34:23.280 add this

00:34:24.100 to the

00:34:24.460 conspiracy

00:34:24.920 theory.

00:34:26.300 Just as

00:34:27.340 it is very

00:34:28.080 unlikely

00:34:28.640 that he

00:34:30.900 would have

00:34:31.240 died by

00:34:31.860 natural causes

00:34:32.840 at just that

00:34:33.600 moment when

00:34:34.240 the police

00:34:34.680 are sitting

00:34:35.440 on top of

00:34:36.020 him,

00:34:36.560 nobody believes

00:34:37.280 that because

00:34:38.200 it's just

00:34:38.480 too unlikely.

00:34:40.000 But do

00:34:40.420 you believe

00:34:40.980 that with

00:34:41.340 all the

00:34:41.680 cameras around

00:34:42.540 the only

00:34:43.800 part that

00:34:44.280 we need

00:34:44.660 to know

00:34:45.180 do you

00:34:46.480 believe that

00:34:47.080 that's

00:34:47.380 missing

00:34:47.800 by accident?

00:34:50.880 I'm going

00:34:51.640 to go with

00:34:52.200 this hypothesis.

00:34:54.860 Somebody has

00:34:55.900 that video

00:34:56.500 and they're

00:34:58.100 not showing

00:34:58.760 it to you

00:34:59.220 intentionally

00:34:59.780 because it

00:35:01.220 doesn't fit

00:35:02.040 what they

00:35:02.960 want to

00:35:03.420 happen.

00:35:04.640 I think

00:35:05.360 that video

00:35:06.820 exists

00:35:07.600 and I

00:35:08.940 think

00:35:09.340 somebody

00:35:10.500 doesn't

00:35:10.880 want you

00:35:11.180 to see

00:35:11.460 it.

00:35:12.800 That's

00:35:13.240 what I

00:35:13.480 think.

00:35:15.540 Now,

00:35:16.500 that said,

00:35:17.880 I've never

00:35:18.360 seen the

00:35:18.760 country more

00:35:19.400 unified

00:35:20.060 racially

00:35:20.820 in the

00:35:22.600 sense that

00:35:23.260 everything

00:35:24.540 that Colin

00:35:25.140 Kaepernick

00:35:25.620 was saying,

00:35:27.080 now we

00:35:28.300 feel it

00:35:28.880 in a more

00:35:29.300 visceral

00:35:29.940 way.

00:35:30.940 You kind

00:35:31.520 of knew

00:35:31.960 that there

00:35:32.400 was a

00:35:33.220 problem,

00:35:34.240 but you

00:35:34.580 also thought,

00:35:35.260 well,

00:35:35.440 it must be

00:35:35.880 happening to 0.93

00:35:36.400 white people

00:35:37.060 too.

00:35:38.140 It's a

00:35:38.560 police

00:35:38.820 problem.

00:35:39.660 But now

00:35:40.020 that you

00:35:40.360 see it,

00:35:41.940 the visual

00:35:42.820 of watching

00:35:43.620 a man's

00:35:44.180 life being

00:35:44.880 snuffed

00:35:45.260 down by

00:35:45.880 a police

00:35:46.440 officer in

00:35:47.780 what seemed

00:35:48.260 to be

00:35:48.700 complete

00:35:49.320 casual

00:35:49.960 business as

00:35:50.740 usual is

00:35:52.020 so horrifying,

00:35:53.600 just so

00:35:54.060 completely

00:35:54.560 horrifying,

00:35:55.740 that I

00:35:56.800 think it

00:35:58.420 unified us

00:35:59.120 in a weird

00:36:00.160 way.

00:36:01.040 Now,

00:36:01.540 I see some

00:36:02.420 people worried

00:36:03.020 that this is

00:36:03.580 the end of

00:36:04.060 civilization and

00:36:05.280 the riots

00:36:06.160 will go

00:36:06.660 out of

00:36:06.840 control and

00:36:07.560 things are

00:36:08.580 fragile,

00:36:09.240 etc.

00:36:09.620 And I

00:36:09.920 think nothing

00:36:10.360 like that's

00:36:10.900 happening.

00:36:12.060 Nothing like

00:36:12.680 that's

00:36:13.000 happening.

00:36:13.760 If you

00:36:14.360 see a

00:36:16.040 crowd in

00:36:17.120 which it's 0.96

00:36:17.500 only black 0.66

00:36:18.120 people or

00:36:18.780 only white

00:36:19.320 people, 0.95

00:36:20.340 something's

00:36:20.880 happening.

00:36:22.320 That's

00:36:22.860 dangerous.

00:36:24.660 You don't

00:36:25.060 want to see

00:36:25.680 a riot with

00:36:27.760 just one

00:36:28.260 ethnicity.

00:36:29.400 If you see

00:36:29.920 that, you

00:36:30.860 know, you

00:36:31.620 better get a

00:36:32.140 gun and hide 0.99

00:36:32.860 in your

00:36:33.120 house.

00:36:34.420 But if

00:36:34.760 you see a

00:36:35.540 multi-ethnic

00:36:36.860 group protesting

00:36:38.800 for more

00:36:41.460 equitable,

00:36:42.660 fair, safer

00:36:43.520 police enforcement

00:36:44.640 and it's

00:36:45.820 completely

00:36:46.260 multi-ethnic,

00:36:48.740 you're closer

00:36:50.100 to a really

00:36:50.800 good thing

00:36:51.440 than a really

00:36:51.920 bad thing.

00:36:53.720 It just

00:36:54.160 doesn't feel

00:36:54.680 like it because

00:36:55.180 the thing's

00:36:55.660 on fire.

00:36:56.540 Now, when

00:36:56.860 you turn on

00:36:57.280 the news,

00:36:58.200 they're going

00:36:58.500 to show that

00:36:58.940 one car that's

00:36:59.780 on fire over

00:37:00.640 and over again

00:37:01.240 because it's

00:37:01.660 the only fire.

00:37:03.280 Gigantic

00:37:03.720 City, one

00:37:05.360 car on fire.

00:37:06.380 What is the

00:37:06.820 news going to

00:37:07.300 be?

00:37:07.860 Let's see how

00:37:08.420 many times we

00:37:09.040 can film this

00:37:09.700 one car on

00:37:10.460 fire from

00:37:10.920 different angles.

00:37:12.040 I hope it

00:37:12.480 keeps burning

00:37:12.980 because it's

00:37:13.440 the only thing

00:37:13.880 interesting.

00:37:14.360 Otherwise, it's

00:37:14.820 just people

00:37:15.180 standing around.

00:37:16.180 Give me the 0.94

00:37:16.560 car on fire.

00:37:18.120 So, the

00:37:18.840 first thing you

00:37:19.320 need to know

00:37:19.760 is that we're

00:37:20.220 being fed a

00:37:20.900 diet of way

00:37:22.760 more danger

00:37:24.060 than is actually

00:37:25.020 there because

00:37:25.600 those are the

00:37:26.060 interesting things.

00:37:27.280 So, of course,

00:37:28.220 we see them.

00:37:29.700 The other thing

00:37:30.660 you need to

00:37:31.100 know is that I

00:37:32.660 would say at

00:37:33.320 least 40 to

00:37:36.200 60 percent of

00:37:37.300 everything you

00:37:38.000 see is probably

00:37:40.500 because of the

00:37:41.580 lockdown and

00:37:43.000 because the

00:37:43.520 weather turned

00:37:44.040 good.

00:37:45.080 People were

00:37:46.520 anxious and

00:37:49.500 angry and

00:37:51.360 frustrated, and

00:37:53.960 then warm weather

00:37:54.900 came.

00:37:55.240 they finally

00:37:57.340 said, what can

00:37:59.340 I do today?

00:38:00.160 Will I go to

00:38:00.820 a restaurant?

00:38:01.720 No.

00:38:02.080 Will I go to

00:38:02.740 the club?

00:38:03.460 No.

00:38:03.960 Will I go to

00:38:04.580 a bar?

00:38:05.260 No.

00:38:06.040 Can I hang

00:38:06.640 out and have a

00:38:07.260 house party?

00:38:08.100 No.

00:38:09.320 What if I have

00:38:10.240 a riot?

00:38:12.640 Can't stop a 0.99

00:38:13.420 riot.

00:38:14.500 You could call

00:38:15.060 it a protest.

00:38:16.360 Same thing.

00:38:17.540 It's hard to

00:38:18.260 stop.

00:38:18.640 If you get

00:38:19.040 enough people,

00:38:20.940 nobody's going

00:38:21.580 to stop you.

00:38:22.120 So I think

00:38:23.180 that the way

00:38:23.600 this has to

00:38:24.140 be looked at

00:38:24.680 is it's kind

00:38:26.400 of emotionally

00:38:27.500 there are two

00:38:29.060 things that

00:38:29.780 kind of collided.

00:38:31.860 Emotionally, the

00:38:32.600 video of, you

00:38:34.280 know, George

00:38:34.760 Floyd being

00:38:35.540 killed is, of

00:38:37.360 course, the big

00:38:37.940 topic, but the

00:38:40.020 way we feel

00:38:40.940 about everything,

00:38:42.660 whether it was

00:38:43.380 this story or

00:38:44.080 some other

00:38:44.540 trigger, the way

00:38:45.540 we feel about

00:38:46.100 everything is

00:38:46.740 just a little

00:38:48.320 extra weight on

00:38:52.060 it because

00:38:53.400 we've been

00:38:54.600 locked up and

00:38:55.320 we just need

00:38:56.280 to get out.

00:38:58.960 So I would

00:39:00.000 not expect this

00:39:00.720 to be a

00:39:01.160 permanent situation

00:39:01.980 because, number

00:39:02.880 one, everybody

00:39:04.240 agrees.

00:39:05.840 Everybody agrees.

00:39:07.480 Who exactly are

00:39:08.420 they protesting?

00:39:09.700 Are they

00:39:10.100 protesting the

00:39:11.060 governor of

00:39:12.540 Minnesota?

00:39:13.200 No.

00:39:14.000 He wants those

00:39:14.640 guys in jail.

00:39:15.760 Are they

00:39:16.040 protesting the

00:39:17.460 legal system?

00:39:18.800 No.

00:39:19.320 They've already

00:39:19.820 arrested that

00:39:20.420 guy.

00:39:20.600 Are they

00:39:21.520 protesting the

00:39:22.420 court decision?

00:39:23.520 No.

00:39:23.860 It hasn't

00:39:24.120 happened.

00:39:24.860 Are they

00:39:25.180 protesting the

00:39:25.920 president?

00:39:26.420 No.

00:39:26.980 He agrees with

00:39:27.760 them so hard

00:39:28.560 that I think it

00:39:29.360 confuses them.

00:39:30.920 Who are they

00:39:31.620 protesting?

00:39:32.860 Now, of course,

00:39:34.160 they're protesting,

00:39:35.420 you know, I guess,

00:39:37.020 institutional racism.

00:39:38.720 They're protesting

00:39:39.340 maybe some

00:39:40.540 tendencies, some

00:39:41.640 human biases.

00:39:42.940 But what are you

00:39:43.580 going to do about

00:39:44.180 that?

00:39:45.080 What are you

00:39:45.420 going to do

00:39:45.720 about it?

00:39:46.780 I mean, I do

00:39:47.520 think there are

00:39:48.020 lots of ways you

00:39:48.680 can improve

00:39:49.300 police work.

00:39:51.260 You should

00:39:51.560 certainly have

00:39:52.240 them, they

00:39:52.800 should all have

00:39:53.220 body cams at

00:39:54.160 the very least.

00:39:55.240 That's the least

00:39:55.880 they should have

00:39:56.580 is body cams.

00:39:57.840 Maybe they need

00:39:58.600 to revise some

00:39:59.440 rules because it's

00:40:01.660 not the first time

00:40:02.460 a black man has

00:40:03.260 died screaming for 0.58

00:40:05.000 medical care.

00:40:06.380 If this had been

00:40:07.280 the first and only

00:40:08.240 time a black man

00:40:10.000 had died while

00:40:11.400 begging for medical

00:40:13.040 care, then you'd

00:40:15.020 say, oh, it's

00:40:15.360 just a one-off

00:40:16.140 mistake.

00:40:16.940 It's terrible, it's

00:40:17.720 a tragedy, but we

00:40:19.040 don't need to fix

00:40:19.760 anything because it

00:40:20.980 just happened that

00:40:21.520 one time.

00:40:22.640 But it's not one

00:40:23.720 time.

00:40:24.820 It's not one

00:40:25.420 time.

00:40:26.720 How many cases

00:40:27.880 have you heard of?

00:40:28.540 Three or four now?

00:40:30.320 Where it sounds a

00:40:31.460 lot the same.

00:40:32.880 So maybe there is

00:40:34.140 some other process.

00:40:35.360 Let me give you my

00:40:36.800 recommendation that I

00:40:37.860 gave to Black Lives 1.00

00:40:38.760 Matter a few years

00:40:40.360 ago when something

00:40:41.460 like this was coming

00:40:42.360 up.

00:40:42.720 Here's my

00:40:43.080 recommendation for a

00:40:44.240 change in the

00:40:45.680 police procedure.

00:40:46.940 And it goes like

00:40:48.980 this.

00:40:49.980 If your suspect

00:40:52.200 claims a medical

00:40:53.680 problem, and as

00:40:55.600 long as you have

00:40:56.220 control of him, so

00:40:57.320 it's not a dangerous

00:40:58.060 situation, you will

00:40:59.720 immediately call your

00:41:01.820 telehealth doctor and

00:41:04.020 say, hey, telehealth

00:41:05.160 doctor, I've got a

00:41:06.840 suspect, he's in

00:41:07.920 handcuffs, he's

00:41:09.080 complaining of

00:41:09.840 breathing problems or

00:41:11.020 whatever, can you talk

00:41:12.660 to me and him at the

00:41:13.480 same time to see if

00:41:14.760 this is real?

00:41:15.320 And the doctor gets

00:41:16.880 on and says, you

00:41:17.740 know, can you tell

00:41:18.680 me what's going on?

00:41:20.480 And then the doctor

00:41:22.280 recommends, do you

00:41:25.180 take him to the

00:41:25.820 hospital right away, do

00:41:26.960 you treat him in some

00:41:27.800 specific way, or does

00:41:29.620 the doctor say, it

00:41:31.040 looks like this could

00:41:31.820 wait?

00:41:33.380 But, if you put it

00:41:34.980 off on the doctor, it's

00:41:37.120 a little bit harder to

00:41:38.240 protest if things go

00:41:39.420 wrong, because we

00:41:40.840 accept the doctors

00:41:41.760 don't get it right

00:41:42.420 every time.

00:41:42.880 That's sort of built

00:41:44.080 into our understanding

00:41:45.140 of healthcare, is

00:41:46.580 that doctors don't

00:41:47.520 get it right every

00:41:48.120 time.

00:41:48.860 So now that you can

00:41:49.680 call a doctor on a

00:41:51.000 video by the device

00:41:53.580 in your pocket, and

00:41:55.340 you can thank the

00:41:57.440 people who are

00:41:57.940 watching this

00:41:58.600 periscope for the

00:42:01.180 fact that at least

00:42:02.980 we were part of the

00:42:03.880 push to make it

00:42:05.260 legal for telehealth,

00:42:06.700 you know, the

00:42:07.020 online doctors to

00:42:08.000 practice across state

00:42:09.340 borders, which makes

00:42:10.780 it viable for the

00:42:11.600 first time.

00:42:12.880 So I say just go

00:42:15.100 with the obvious.

00:42:16.280 Phone a doctor, you

00:42:17.220 should have one who's

00:42:18.060 always available just

00:42:19.220 for this, somebody

00:42:20.660 who's, you know,

00:42:21.500 seen, let's say

00:42:22.700 somebody who's seen

00:42:23.400 police work enough

00:42:24.460 that they also have

00:42:26.120 an understanding that

00:42:27.020 the perpetrators

00:42:27.800 sometimes tell stories.

00:42:29.500 That would be good

00:42:30.440 background for the

00:42:31.240 doctor that they use.

00:42:33.080 So, now, would that

00:42:34.500 work?

00:42:35.660 Maybe not.

00:42:37.120 Maybe that wouldn't

00:42:37.920 work by itself to make

00:42:39.540 everything better.

00:42:40.260 But there are other

00:42:41.700 little tweaks you can

00:42:42.680 make.

00:42:43.180 For example, you

00:42:44.540 could increase the

00:42:47.300 penalty for falsifying

00:42:48.920 a police report.

00:42:50.320 I think that was one

00:42:51.120 of Black Lives Matter

00:42:51.900 suggestions as well.

00:42:53.140 To which I say, I

00:42:55.280 wouldn't object to

00:42:56.080 that.

00:42:56.820 Would you?

00:42:57.560 Would you object to

00:43:00.120 increasing the

00:43:00.940 penalty for falsifying

00:43:02.920 a police report by

00:43:04.240 the police if they did

00:43:06.000 something bad and

00:43:06.900 they're just covering

00:43:07.500 it up with their

00:43:08.660 police report?

00:43:10.260 I don't think I

00:43:11.120 would disagree with

00:43:11.820 that.

00:43:12.560 So, I think you

00:43:13.520 would find that there

00:43:14.600 are a lot of things

00:43:15.280 that would work for

00:43:16.240 Colin Kaepernick, a

00:43:18.000 lot of things that

00:43:18.640 would work for Black 0.98

00:43:19.600 Lives Matter, that

00:43:21.000 somebody like

00:43:21.640 President Trump or

00:43:22.740 any like-minded

00:43:23.580 governors or mayors

00:43:24.960 wherever these

00:43:25.500 decisions need to be

00:43:26.500 made could simply

00:43:28.040 say, let's try it.

00:43:31.160 Here's one.

00:43:32.400 Not all of the

00:43:33.360 police have body

00:43:35.080 cams.

00:43:35.560 And the reason is

00:43:36.540 primarily, primarily

00:43:38.880 budget.

00:43:40.900 So, just suppose, I'll

00:43:42.660 just put this out

00:43:43.440 there, suppose the

00:43:44.260 President of the

00:43:44.800 United States said

00:43:45.720 that there's, this is

00:43:49.100 no longer just a

00:43:50.180 state problem because

00:43:52.020 we have a racism

00:43:53.480 concern.

00:43:55.520 And that's federal.

00:43:57.060 So, the President

00:43:57.900 could easily say,

00:43:59.220 because we have a

00:43:59.840 history of this, that

00:44:01.200 states can't get away

00:44:02.660 with discriminating.

00:44:03.660 And if the reason

00:44:04.900 they're getting away

00:44:05.560 with it is that they

00:44:06.300 have a budget problem,

00:44:07.600 I'm going to solve

00:44:08.760 that, but I'm going

00:44:09.760 to make the budget

00:44:10.420 available that they

00:44:11.220 can all buy body

00:44:12.020 cams.

00:44:13.160 If the President of

00:44:14.300 the United States,

00:44:15.000 especially this

00:44:15.640 President, if Trump

00:44:17.380 said, here's a

00:44:19.360 billion dollars, I'm

00:44:20.300 going to put this

00:44:20.800 bill through Congress,

00:44:22.460 it's a billion dollars

00:44:23.480 and it's nothing

00:44:24.660 except buying body

00:44:25.740 cams.

00:44:26.900 Because we want to

00:44:28.060 reduce this problem

00:44:29.820 in every way we can.

00:44:31.440 That's just one of the

00:44:32.400 things we could do.

00:44:33.620 Maybe he could do

00:44:34.500 an executive order

00:44:35.440 that would be like

00:44:36.500 a suggestion to

00:44:37.500 the states to make

00:44:39.200 falsifying a police

00:44:40.600 report more of a

00:44:41.940 penalty.

00:44:42.720 He could suggest

00:44:43.480 that.

00:44:43.780 They'd still have to

00:44:44.400 do it at a state

00:44:45.120 level.

00:44:46.180 So anyway, the point

00:44:46.920 is, there are very

00:44:48.280 practical things which

00:44:49.900 smart people have

00:44:50.840 worked out that are

00:44:52.240 worth trying.

00:44:53.460 If you don't, if

00:44:55.080 you don't try, then

00:44:57.200 it cannot be said

00:44:58.360 that you're valuing

00:44:59.480 black lives or any 0.99

00:45:00.480 other lives. 0.97

00:45:01.060 If you don't try, of

00:45:03.340 course you should try.

00:45:04.940 What are we doing?

00:45:06.460 So you've got, you've

00:45:07.600 got protesters in the

00:45:09.120 streets of, you know,

00:45:10.500 a bunch of major

00:45:11.240 cities.

00:45:11.860 It's the biggest story

00:45:13.060 going.

00:45:13.520 They're destroying

00:45:14.080 property.

00:45:15.280 You know, it's just a

00:45:16.320 horrible situation.

00:45:18.200 But what's, what's

00:45:19.860 anybody doing?

00:45:21.320 What are the

00:45:22.020 suggestions?

00:45:23.160 I think the president

00:45:24.320 could just say, look,

00:45:25.900 I haven't heard any

00:45:27.020 good suggestions, but I'm

00:45:28.220 going to do these

00:45:28.820 things.

00:45:29.220 I'm going to fund

00:45:30.980 the body cams.

00:45:32.120 I'm going to, you

00:45:33.160 know, make sure that

00:45:34.080 the, you know,

00:45:35.160 recommend that they

00:45:36.020 toughen the laws on

00:45:37.060 something.

00:45:37.980 And, or, and I, I

00:45:39.620 could recommend that

00:45:40.440 they have a doctor

00:45:41.480 opinion if somebody

00:45:42.580 says that they can't

00:45:43.520 breathe.

00:45:44.080 So that's three very

00:45:45.620 specific things that

00:45:47.720 you could just put out

00:45:48.480 there and say, let's

00:45:49.240 try this.

00:45:50.140 Let's just try it.

00:45:51.000 All right.

00:45:55.900 So that's the, that's

00:45:59.700 where I'm at with all

00:46:00.520 this stuff.

00:46:02.540 Again, I want to assure

00:46:05.720 everybody who's watching

00:46:06.880 this, I've never seen the

00:46:09.720 public of the United

00:46:10.860 States this unified.

00:46:12.720 And the only reason

00:46:14.440 that we're not talking

00:46:15.260 about that is because

00:46:17.500 the news is telling

00:46:19.020 you it's not.

00:46:20.340 The news is still

00:46:21.920 telling you we're not

00:46:22.820 unified.

00:46:23.880 We could not be more

00:46:25.660 unified on this

00:46:27.000 question.

00:46:28.320 We couldn't be.

00:46:30.020 Because you know

00:46:30.760 what?

00:46:31.460 I don't even think

00:46:32.760 Colin Kaepernick wants

00:46:34.700 to disrespect the

00:46:35.920 country.

00:46:37.060 I think he wants the

00:46:38.340 country just to do

00:46:39.280 better.

00:46:40.740 Now, I realize that's a

00:46:42.160 generous interpretation.

00:46:44.360 But I think it's a good

00:46:45.500 time to be generous.

00:46:47.300 It's a good time to be

00:46:48.220 generous.

00:46:49.280 So I, so I, my, my

00:46:51.300 take on Kaepernick from

00:46:52.540 the beginning is that he

00:46:54.240 was very effective.

00:46:56.020 And so I, I praised him

00:46:57.520 for his effectiveness

00:46:58.420 even if he didn't like the

00:47:00.720 fact that he didn't have

00:47:01.420 any specific suggestions

00:47:02.680 to fix anything.

00:47:03.600 And I don't think he

00:47:04.220 did.

00:47:04.400 So I still respect him

00:47:06.640 for the message and for

00:47:08.180 the effectiveness of it.

00:47:09.520 And because it's

00:47:10.300 something that a great,

00:47:12.220 a great deal, many of

00:47:13.760 my fellow Americans are

00:47:16.320 concerned about.

00:47:17.120 And that's good enough

00:47:17.720 for me.

00:47:18.440 If there are a lot of

00:47:19.600 Americans who are deeply,

00:47:21.420 deeply, deeply concerned

00:47:23.560 about this issue, I'm not

00:47:25.640 going to talk them out of

00:47:26.520 it.

00:47:27.400 I'm not going to tell

00:47:28.100 them, you know, you

00:47:29.020 should look at it

00:47:29.660 differently.

00:47:30.640 Shouldn't think of it

00:47:31.420 that way.

00:47:32.080 It's not that big of a

00:47:32.920 problem.

00:47:33.040 I'm not going to do that.

00:47:34.400 But the fact is that

00:47:36.260 there's a gigantic

00:47:37.100 percentage, I don't know

00:47:38.860 the percentage, but it's

00:47:39.700 a big percentage, of the

00:47:41.620 population who's got real

00:47:42.860 pain, real concern, you

00:47:44.700 know, a real, a real

00:47:46.120 issue.

00:47:47.160 This is as real as it

00:47:48.400 gets.

00:47:49.140 If the police are, if you

00:47:50.420 think the police are

00:47:51.220 killing you because of the 0.82

00:47:52.180 way you look, that's, that's 1.00

00:47:55.060 a 10 out of 10.

00:47:56.620 You know, how do you live

00:47:57.340 in that country?

00:47:57.920 So I can assure you, I get

00:48:01.280 that, and I understand that

00:48:02.620 that's the reality.

00:48:04.700 Now, you can try to argue

00:48:06.660 it away and say, well, you

00:48:08.060 know, white people get 0.98

00:48:08.980 killed too, and it's not 0.80

00:48:10.180 really racial and stuff like

00:48:11.380 that.

00:48:11.780 But the lived truth is that

00:48:15.600 they've got this extra risk.

00:48:18.680 And I think you have to deal

00:48:21.140 with it as a lived truth, which

00:48:24.000 is a good, I love that phrase,

00:48:25.440 by the way, because it gets

00:48:27.080 to the fact that reality is

00:48:28.460 subjective, and nothing could

00:48:31.200 be more subjective than this

00:48:32.620 situation.

00:48:33.580 The way everybody feels about

00:48:34.900 it is really a reflection of

00:48:36.800 their own life and things

00:48:37.780 that have happened to them

00:48:38.620 and who they are and all

00:48:39.500 that.

00:48:40.820 All right. 1.00

00:48:43.100 Did we talk stupid protests 1.00

00:48:45.160 yet? 1.00

00:48:46.540 Well, this is the reason that

00:48:49.000 I think the protests have as

00:48:51.260 much to do with the lockdown

00:48:53.620 plus the good weather.

00:48:55.440 because, as I said, they

00:48:57.360 don't know who to protest

00:48:58.640 because nobody's on the other

00:49:00.240 side.

00:49:01.660 And by the way, am I the only

00:49:03.680 person saying this?

00:49:05.160 Is there anybody else in the

00:49:07.120 media, the punditry, on social

00:49:09.080 media, is there anybody else

00:49:10.760 who's pointing out what I am,

00:49:12.780 which is that this is being

00:49:14.040 looked at backwards?

00:49:15.080 This is the most unifying event

00:49:18.340 in the history of the United

00:49:20.220 States, since Pearl Harbor?

00:49:24.520 Maybe 9-11.

00:49:28.100 I don't think racially we've ever

00:49:30.580 been more on the same side.

00:49:32.320 And we should be celebrating

00:49:33.420 that.

00:49:34.300 We are so on the same side.

00:49:37.000 Turn on CNN.

00:49:39.920 It looks like it's basically the

00:49:42.860 same story on Fox News.

00:49:44.800 How often does that happen?

00:49:47.600 Now, the difference, of course,

00:49:49.480 is that CNN is blaming the

00:49:50.940 president for being a racist, 0.50

00:49:52.420 and therefore it's all his 0.99

00:49:53.520 fault.

00:49:53.900 They've turned it into this 0.98

00:49:54.800 ridiculous political thing, 0.77

00:49:56.920 when in fact the biggest story 0.96

00:49:59.100 in the world is unfolding right

00:50:00.780 in front of us, and it's

00:50:01.720 invisible.

00:50:02.740 It's literally invisible.

00:50:04.960 The most unifying situation

00:50:07.440 we've ever had socially, and

00:50:11.220 it's invisible.

00:50:11.980 Why?

00:50:13.760 Because the media has the

00:50:16.020 public hypnotized by their

00:50:17.900 framing of things, and they

00:50:19.760 have framed this as a problem

00:50:22.600 with racial inequality.

00:50:24.560 It's exactly the opposite.

00:50:27.320 Now, independent of what those

00:50:29.380 individual cops were thinking

00:50:30.680 in their head, we don't know

00:50:31.660 that, but we're not talking

00:50:33.280 about individuals.

00:50:34.920 I'm talking about tens of

00:50:37.060 thousands of people in the

00:50:38.320 street.

00:50:39.260 Just look at the video.

00:50:40.340 All racial groups, all

00:50:43.360 genders, gay, straight, it's

00:50:46.480 the most unifying thing we've

00:50:48.660 ever experienced.

00:50:50.540 Thank you for reminding me

00:50:51.920 that Van Jones, the way that

00:50:54.720 he's characterized this, as he

00:50:57.160 said, if you're looking for

00:50:58.860 racism in, you know, Trump's,

00:51:00.880 I'll paraphrase, so he said it

00:51:02.580 better, but basically saying,

00:51:04.760 you know, it's not, it's not

00:51:06.040 the racists who are like the

00:51:07.900 real legitimate racists that

00:51:10.600 are all the problem, but

00:51:13.200 rather, it's the people who

00:51:15.220 think they're good people and

00:51:16.580 vote for Democrats, but then

00:51:19.420 when you approach them in the

00:51:21.680 park with your dog, suddenly 0.82

00:51:23.620 they turn into raging racists.

00:51:26.240 And Van Jones, quite

00:51:27.860 insightfully, is saying, maybe

00:51:30.080 the problem isn't this group,

00:51:32.080 maybe the problem is

00:51:34.480 people, maybe the problem is

00:51:36.960 people, and if we stop, you

00:51:39.160 know, slicing it into this kind

00:51:40.920 of people or this kind of

00:51:41.840 people and just say, maybe we're

00:51:43.980 just a biased, discriminating,

00:51:47.780 prejudiced people.

00:51:50.300 Now, my take on this is that

00:51:53.020 that's how the brain works.

00:51:55.040 Your brain is a pattern, your

00:51:57.440 pattern recognition machine.

00:51:59.020 It operates on patterns.

00:52:00.700 Oh, I've seen this before, this

00:52:02.500 worked before, this didn't work

00:52:04.060 before, I'll do what worked

00:52:05.340 before.

00:52:06.120 It's all patterns.

00:52:07.440 The trouble is, we're really

00:52:08.920 bad at it.

00:52:10.080 So we have a pattern

00:52:11.300 recognition machine in our

00:52:12.700 head that makes all our

00:52:13.700 decisions, and it's not good at

00:52:15.660 recognizing patterns.

00:52:17.580 That couldn't be worse, but it

00:52:19.340 is the situation we're in.

00:52:21.720 And prejudice and bias is all

00:52:25.680 based on the fact that you've

00:52:26.760 got a pattern recognition

00:52:27.880 machine, and you've got a bad

00:52:29.940 pattern in there.

00:52:31.420 Now, if you have a good

00:52:32.240 pattern in there, you're

00:52:33.400 actually able to predict the

00:52:34.580 future.

00:52:35.280 Oh, every time I see this

00:52:37.100 situation, this happens.

00:52:39.160 So that's what a good pattern

00:52:40.360 can do for you.

00:52:41.580 A bad pattern says, oh, every

00:52:43.200 time I see an Elbonian wearing 0.99

00:52:44.700 a hat, he's going to punch me 0.97

00:52:46.600 in the face, because the last 0.98

00:52:48.040 three Elbonians wearing a hat 0.80

00:52:49.780 punched me in the face.

00:52:51.260 Or worse, worse, I've never

00:52:54.300 been punched in the face by an

00:52:55.620 Elbonian, but I was raised to

00:52:58.200 think that they punch you in

00:52:59.200 the face. 0.87

00:52:59.980 Now, that would be a bad

00:53:02.700 pattern, assuming that Elbonians

00:53:04.840 do not punch people in the face

00:53:06.220 more than the average.

00:53:07.320 That would be a pattern that's

00:53:08.640 just a faulty pattern.

00:53:10.600 So what do you do when people

00:53:12.440 are naturally pattern recognition

00:53:14.640 machines, and they're not good

00:53:16.320 at it?

00:53:17.640 I think that's what you have to

00:53:19.200 deal with.

00:53:20.360 You should deal with the fact

00:53:22.040 that we're all biased by design.

00:53:25.200 You can't be unbiased.

00:53:27.980 Anybody who tells you that they 0.54

00:53:29.340 don't have bias, they're just

00:53:31.520 lying. 0.99

00:53:32.260 They're just liars. 0.99

00:53:33.620 Now, I think you can love 0.97

00:53:34.760 somebody at the same time you

00:53:36.500 have bias.

00:53:37.300 I think you can rise above your

00:53:39.880 bias.

00:53:40.820 I think you can say to yourself,

00:53:42.160 okay, I don't have a good

00:53:44.000 feeling about this for whatever

00:53:45.480 biased reason, but I'm going to

00:53:47.620 give everybody a fair chance.

00:53:50.020 I'm going to look at the resume.

00:53:51.520 I'm not going to look at the skin

00:53:53.160 color.

00:53:53.460 I'm going to look at what you

00:53:55.320 can do, how you did in the

00:53:56.860 interview.

00:53:57.360 I'm not going to look at your

00:53:58.100 gender, etc.

00:54:00.620 So I think we should maybe just

00:54:03.300 accept that being biased in every

00:54:06.540 possible way, whether it's

00:54:07.900 ethnically or politically,

00:54:09.980 anything.

00:54:10.680 That's just who we are.

00:54:12.980 And I don't think we should

00:54:14.980 pretend.

00:54:16.520 See, the worst thing we do is

00:54:18.120 pretend there are people who are

00:54:19.180 not that person.

00:54:20.200 That just doesn't exist.

00:54:23.840 There are people who can overcome

00:54:25.520 their bias, but there are no people

00:54:27.680 who don't have bias.

00:54:28.800 That's just not possible.

00:54:31.700 Somebody says it works both ways,

00:54:33.700 Scott.

00:54:34.000 Of course it does.

00:54:35.240 What I'm talking about is people.

00:54:37.700 So, of course, it would work in every

00:54:39.720 direction.

00:54:40.120 Totally agree, but that's not the name

00:54:46.420 of the game.

00:54:47.140 Yeah, obviously the name of the game

00:54:50.340 is politics and power.

00:54:52.980 So people will make claims that are

00:54:55.040 not true.

00:54:55.760 But the trouble is the public believes

00:54:57.560 them.

00:54:58.400 It's one thing.

00:54:59.160 I'm saying, oh, I'm glad I lifted

00:55:02.320 your spirits, Kathy.

00:55:07.020 Yeah, I've said before that we can't

00:55:09.980 tell the difference between being on

00:55:12.420 the edge of doom and being on the edge

00:55:15.040 of greatness.

00:55:16.040 It looks the same.

00:55:18.440 Being right on the edge of the worst

00:55:20.140 day you're ever going to have and being

00:55:22.300 right on the edge of the best day you

00:55:25.120 ever have can look identical.

00:55:27.340 So when we're focusing on these riots,

00:55:30.940 et cetera, we're just being blinded to

00:55:32.580 the fact that there's nobody on the

00:55:35.200 other side.

00:55:36.960 I don't know how many times I could say

00:55:38.680 that and still be the only person who

00:55:41.120 says it.

00:55:42.040 There's no one on the other side.

00:55:44.320 There's no one on the other side.

00:55:46.580 When do we realize that?

00:55:48.540 There's no one on the other side.

00:55:50.820 It'll be okay.

00:55:52.700 If there was someone on the other side,

00:55:55.360 maybe it wouldn't be okay.

00:55:56.460 But there's no one on the other side.

00:55:59.280 We're all in this together,

00:56:01.180 completely on the same page.

00:56:03.400 Now we've got some facts that we'll find

00:56:05.280 out and maybe later that will split us up.

00:56:08.520 But at the moment,

00:56:10.260 we're pretty good.

00:56:12.940 All right.

00:56:13.700 That's all I've got for now.

00:56:15.020 I will leave you with that positive thought

00:56:16.580 and I will talk to you in the morning.

00:56:18.100 There will probably be 10 new headline

00:56:19.920 stories by then because it's that kind

00:56:22.460 of a month.

00:56:23.560 I'll see you then.

00:56:24.200 I'll see you then.

00:56:25.200 I'll see you then.

00:56:26.080 I'll see you then.
