Real Coffee with Scott Adams - Episode 1020 Scott Adams： I Solve Institutional Racism While You Wait. Someone Should Have Asked me Sooner.

00:00:00.000 Hey, good morning. Come on in. Come on in.

00:00:13.160 I hear there's a little problem called institutional racism.

00:00:18.960 As soon as I heard about it, I said to myself, well, I'm going to solve that.

00:00:22.920 And so this morning I will solve institutional racism, probably end all of the protests.

00:00:28.960 I don't know, by the end of the hour.

00:00:33.840 And it made me wonder, why didn't somebody ask me before?

00:00:37.440 You just had to ask me. I could have solved that list before.

00:00:40.640 But we'll get to that in a moment.

00:00:42.520 But first, is there something we're forgetting?

00:00:46.040 Yeah. Yeah, there is.

00:00:48.700 It's called the simultaneous set.

00:00:50.820 And all you need to participate, you know.

00:00:54.400 All you need is a cup or a mug or a glass, a tanker, chalice, or stein, a canteen jug or a flask, a vessel of any kind.

00:01:03.820 Fill it with your favorite liquid. I like coffee.

00:01:07.120 And join me now for the unparalleled pleasure, the dopamine hit of the day, the thing that makes everything better, including institutional racism. 0.66

00:01:15.720 But only if you drink it black.

00:01:19.540 It's time for the simultaneous sip. Go!

00:01:25.280 Uh-huh. Uh-huh.

00:01:26.820 I feel the racism declining everywhere in America.

00:01:30.340 Just a little bit.

00:01:31.640 And you might not notice it on the first day.

00:01:34.340 But it's only one sip.

00:01:35.840 Imagine what you could do with multiple sips and everybody sipping together.

00:01:40.160 I know. It's unbelievable.

00:01:45.140 So, I've decided to go on strike.

00:01:50.240 I'm going on strike.

00:01:53.100 And here's what I'm no longer going to do. 0.99

00:01:56.400 I'm no longer going to pretend I know what the fuck institutional racism means. 0.97

00:02:03.900 I'm just not going to pretend I know what that means. 0.85

00:02:07.240 Do you know what it means?

00:02:08.100 Do you know what you're supposed to do about it?

00:02:12.320 When you've got to fix that institutional racism, do you know exactly where the buttons are?

00:02:18.520 How about the levers? Do you know where the levers are?

00:02:22.200 Can you go fix that institutional racism because you know exactly what it is?

00:02:29.260 But, you know, that's not the biggest problem in the world.

00:02:32.520 Because if somebody has a problem and they tell you what it is, but they haven't defined it,

00:02:37.580 it's easy enough to talk to them until you figure out what it is they're talking about.

00:02:44.500 You know, you can work through it and say, all right, what exactly do you mean?

00:02:48.260 Let's get down to it.

00:02:49.340 Let's look at some data so we can tease out what's really racism,

00:02:53.700 what's just the things happening the way they happen.

00:02:55.740 But in order to do any of that, the part where you have a discussion and you figure out exactly what it means 0.97

00:03:04.040 and what you can do about it, you would need to be able to fucking talk about it. 0.93

00:03:09.040 Do you know what you're not allowed to do? 0.98

00:03:11.400 You're not allowed to talk about it.

00:03:14.720 So here's the setup.

00:03:15.820 We've got this vague, undefined thing.

00:03:19.800 It's a big problem and we demand that you fix it.

00:03:24.000 Our big, undefined thing.

00:03:26.200 But you can't ask us any details

00:03:28.580 because if you did, you'd be a little bit racist.

00:03:34.060 For example,

00:03:37.040 the top editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer

00:03:40.320 has stepped down from his role

00:03:42.660 after the newspaper published an article with the headline

00:03:45.760 Buildings Matter Too

00:03:47.900 last week, according to an internal memo.

00:03:54.500 CNN is reporting this.

00:03:56.760 That's right.

00:03:58.200 An editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer,

00:04:01.120 one of the most prestigious of the local newspapers,

00:04:05.520 20-year employee,

00:04:07.160 had to step down

00:04:08.460 because he used the wrong words.

00:04:11.240 Do you think that this 20-year employee

00:04:14.760 is a racist?

00:04:18.080 Well, he used the wrong words.

00:04:21.560 He used the Black Lives Matter saying,

00:04:25.180 but he used it about buildings

00:04:26.620 and implied that a building

00:04:28.460 is important as a black life. 0.97

00:04:31.620 Well, you've got to go. 0.99

00:04:33.480 You've got to go.

00:04:34.280 Those 20 years you spent,

00:04:36.140 out the door. 0.99

00:04:38.520 Goodbye, racist. 0.98

00:04:39.820 If you think the economy is important, 0.96

00:04:45.760 which is what he's talking about

00:04:47.240 when he talks about buildings,

00:04:48.760 if you think the economy is important

00:04:50.620 to keeping people alive, 0.94

00:04:52.920 racist. 0.99

00:04:54.080 You've got to go. 0.98

00:04:55.140 You've got to go.

00:04:56.500 If you think that people destroying

00:04:58.220 their own means of economic recovery

00:05:00.700 is a bad idea, 1.00

00:05:03.200 you're a racist. 1.00

00:05:04.440 I'm using Tucker Carlson's, 1.00

00:05:06.120 the way he says racist,

00:05:08.360 racist.

00:05:11.580 So I'm going on strike.

00:05:13.900 I'm not going to pretend

00:05:15.300 to be useful.

00:05:16.800 I'm not going to pretend

00:05:17.960 I can help.

00:05:19.480 I'm not going to pretend

00:05:20.580 you're even serious.

00:05:22.400 I'm not going to pretend

00:05:23.640 that there's anybody

00:05:24.620 who really wants this problem solved

00:05:26.500 until you can let me talk about it.

00:05:29.780 So as soon as I get,

00:05:33.240 I and everybody else,

00:05:34.460 it's not just about me,

00:05:35.720 but as soon as we get a pass

00:05:37.300 that we can even have the conversation, 0.98

00:05:40.280 we can't even fucking have the conversation 0.99

00:05:42.940 without getting canceled. 0.99

00:05:45.100 Don't expect me to fucking help 0.99

00:05:47.540 if I can't even talk about it. 0.98

00:05:51.020 Now, when I was talking

00:05:52.120 to Hotep Jesus the other day,

00:05:55.620 and if you watch that,

00:05:56.760 you realize that there were,

00:05:57.960 there are some spots

00:05:59.100 where I said to him directly,

00:06:01.160 well, you can say that,

00:06:02.600 but I can't.

00:06:04.140 You can say that.

00:06:05.820 And he did.

00:06:07.200 He said it in direct words.

00:06:09.000 And I said,

00:06:09.520 I can't even say that.

00:06:11.020 I wouldn't even be part

00:06:12.440 of that conversation

00:06:13.340 because I can't even agree with you.

00:06:15.780 You can say it

00:06:16.800 and I can't even agree with you. 0.96

00:06:18.760 How the fuck am I supposed to help, really? 0.96

00:06:24.000 Now, I think we should stop kidding ourselves 0.96

00:06:26.560 that when somebody says

00:06:27.980 we're going to march

00:06:28.640 until you fix institutional racism,

00:06:31.720 that that's actually a useful thing,

00:06:34.540 meaning that it's useful

00:06:36.300 the way it's framed.

00:06:38.960 I don't doubt that there is

00:06:40.620 such a thing as racism.

00:06:42.460 I don't doubt there is such a thing

00:06:44.340 as the institution set up

00:06:46.040 to advantage or disadvantage somebody.

00:06:48.320 I don't doubt any of that.

00:06:50.000 I'm not questioning

00:06:50.860 the existence of a problem.

00:06:53.280 I'm just saying

00:06:53.860 if you can't define it

00:06:54.980 a little bit better

00:06:55.740 and I'm not even allowed

00:06:57.260 to talk about it, 0.99

00:06:58.840 don't fucking expect me to help. 0.99

00:07:01.160 I mean, really, 0.99

00:07:01.980 don't expect me to help

00:07:03.500 if you won't let me

00:07:05.360 even talk about it.

00:07:07.620 That's the basic.

00:07:09.960 Here's another thing

00:07:10.920 you need to do

00:07:11.680 in order to get me off of strike.

00:07:15.160 Take yes for an answer.

00:07:17.380 How about that?

00:07:18.660 How about when you say,

00:07:19.840 would you like to help

00:07:20.700 and I say yes?

00:07:23.360 You say, oh, okay.

00:07:25.560 Let's see if we can figure this out.

00:07:28.480 How about not protesting me

00:07:30.340 after I say yes? 0.99

00:07:32.380 How about not burning down shit 0.98

00:07:34.260 after people say yes? 0.99

00:07:36.340 How about after you get our attention

00:07:38.260 and everybody is like,

00:07:39.900 yeah, yeah, let's do it.

00:07:41.540 What do you got?

00:07:42.900 Give us some ideas.

00:07:43.700 Let's bounce this around.

00:07:46.560 How about if you won't take yes

00:07:48.140 for an answer, 0.99

00:07:48.840 don't expect me to fucking help. 0.99

00:07:51.560 If you're trying to change my mind 0.99

00:07:53.420 from no to yes,

00:07:54.680 okay, protest along.

00:07:56.340 Protest away.

00:07:57.480 My help.

00:07:58.980 But once I've said yes 0.99

00:08:00.320 and you're still burning down my shit 1.00

00:08:02.080 or other people's shit, 1.00

00:08:04.580 don't expect me to jump in there 0.99

00:08:06.240 and be helpful.

00:08:08.200 I'm not going to do that.

00:08:09.500 So I'm on strike.

00:08:12.940 Happy to help.

00:08:14.800 Happy to be useful.

00:08:15.940 Happy to talk about anything.

00:08:17.960 Happy to consider any proposal.

00:08:20.880 Any proposal.

00:08:22.360 In fact, you've even seen me,

00:08:24.960 those of you who have been around for a while,

00:08:27.400 you've seen me discuss seriously reparations, right?

00:08:33.340 I took that conversation seriously

00:08:35.000 and I bounced it around

00:08:36.040 to try to figure out,

00:08:37.520 like, is there a way to do it

00:08:38.900 that doesn't make everybody more mad

00:08:41.220 than if you hadn't done it?

00:08:43.000 You know, is there a way to do it?

00:08:44.160 And I'm also going to be talking about

00:08:45.600 eliminating the police

00:08:46.940 and I'm taking it seriously

00:08:48.460 because that's,

00:08:49.940 as far as I know,

00:08:50.720 that's the only specific suggestion

00:08:52.400 that's on the table.

00:08:54.640 And so my commitment is

00:08:56.020 that if you give me a serious suggestion,

00:08:58.900 I will treat it seriously.

00:09:00.440 I'm not going to just reject it.

00:09:02.660 I'm going to really bounce it around.

00:09:04.220 See if there's something to work with here.

00:09:06.340 A little creativity,

00:09:07.560 maybe a little brainstorming.

00:09:09.460 Maybe you get to something.

00:09:10.780 We'll see.

00:09:12.080 We'll talk about that in a minute.

00:09:15.360 So,

00:09:16.400 one of the ways I know I'm right

00:09:20.920 when I say you can't solve a problem

00:09:22.560 that you're not allowed to discuss

00:09:24.040 is that if you look at the number of retweets to likes,

00:09:28.440 you ever do that?

00:09:30.040 So if somebody has a favorable opinion of your tweet,

00:09:33.840 they have two ways to show it.

00:09:36.180 They can simply like it,

00:09:37.740 which is the weak way,

00:09:39.100 or they can retweet it,

00:09:40.660 which is the powerful way,

00:09:42.120 and often when it gets retweeted,

00:09:43.760 it's also liked.

00:09:45.700 So,

00:09:46.320 when I said,

00:09:47.200 how do you solve a problem

00:09:48.840 you're not allowed to discuss,

00:09:50.680 the number of likes was really high

00:09:53.180 and the number of retweets was really low.

00:09:55.760 What does that tell you?

00:09:59.000 Well,

00:09:59.440 if you spend time on Twitter,

00:10:00.900 you know that what that told you is

00:10:02.220 there was a whole lot of people

00:10:03.740 who agreed with it

00:10:04.700 timidly.

00:10:07.180 So there's a lot of agreement,

00:10:09.400 but not so much agreement

00:10:11.640 you'd want to retweet it

00:10:13.200 because you might get canceled.

00:10:14.580 You might get canceled

00:10:16.040 just for retweeting an opinion

00:10:17.500 that it's hard to talk about the problem.

00:10:20.460 That's how bad it is.

00:10:22.040 There are people who thought

00:10:23.000 they would get canceled

00:10:23.940 for retweeting a tweet

00:10:25.880 that says,

00:10:27.200 just this,

00:10:28.160 how do you solve a problem

00:10:29.200 you're not allowed to discuss?

00:10:31.020 That's the whole tweet.

00:10:32.600 There's nothing in there about race.

00:10:34.780 That's it.

00:10:35.240 How do you solve a problem

00:10:36.180 you're not allowed to discuss?

00:10:38.260 Is that controversial?

00:10:40.020 Well,

00:10:40.540 apparently that's controversial enough

00:10:43.120 that a lot of people liked it.

00:10:45.780 Not that many people retweeted it.

00:10:48.600 So I think

00:10:49.500 I'm going to call that as proof.

00:10:56.900 Here's a thought for you

00:10:58.440 if you'd like to completely destroy

00:11:00.520 the idea of eliminating

00:11:01.620 the police department.

00:11:02.740 Are you ready?

00:11:03.600 Now, you might not want to.

00:11:05.120 And in fact,

00:11:05.620 I'm going to talk about

00:11:06.400 talking about some ways

00:11:08.240 you could

00:11:08.800 eliminate most of 0.91

00:11:10.940 what the police department is.

00:11:12.820 So unlike most of you,

00:11:14.480 I think,

00:11:14.980 watching this

00:11:15.740 who would say,

00:11:16.780 that's crazy

00:11:17.400 eliminating the police.

00:11:18.740 It's not crazy.

00:11:20.980 Let me say that

00:11:21.840 as clearly as possible.

00:11:22.860 It's not crazy.

00:11:24.420 It just hasn't been

00:11:25.520 thought through entirely.

00:11:27.140 There might be

00:11:27.960 some special cases

00:11:29.000 where you could actually test it.

00:11:30.520 And I'd be in favor of that. 0.83

00:11:34.720 So here's the kill shot 1.00

00:11:36.240 if you just didn't even want 1.00

00:11:37.340 to have that conversation.

00:11:38.660 And it goes like this.

00:11:40.220 Eliminating police

00:11:41.160 transfers power to men. 0.70

00:11:44.380 That's it.

00:11:45.740 That's the end of it.

00:11:47.380 Eliminating police

00:11:48.540 transfers power to men. 0.70

00:11:52.220 Because

00:11:52.740 where does power go

00:11:55.660 when there's a vacuum?

00:11:58.340 Well,

00:11:58.760 when there's a vacuum of power,

00:12:00.200 it's going to go somewhere.

00:12:02.500 Right?

00:12:02.700 Somebody always emerges

00:12:03.880 to take power,

00:12:04.900 have power,

00:12:06.020 rises to power.

00:12:07.620 Power just sort of happens.

00:12:08.860 If you put a bunch of people together,

00:12:10.580 sooner or later,

00:12:11.400 somebody's going to be the leader.

00:12:12.920 They're going to be a warlord.

00:12:14.520 They're going to be a gang leader.

00:12:15.840 They're going to be the president.

00:12:16.720 And we just always have leaders.

00:12:19.820 So if you take

00:12:20.500 the police

00:12:23.440 and the power

00:12:24.320 that the police have

00:12:25.280 to keep order

00:12:26.800 in a certain way,

00:12:28.140 if you take them

00:12:28.820 out of the equation,

00:12:30.600 it seems to me

00:12:31.480 that men abusing women

00:12:33.920 would go up.

00:12:36.340 And it seems to me

00:12:37.280 that a woman 0.98

00:12:37.900 would have to depend

00:12:38.840 on a man

00:12:39.460 to defend

00:12:40.220 the house.

00:12:42.880 And if the woman 0.99

00:12:43.840 is depending on a man

00:12:45.080 to defend the house,

00:12:46.900 it gives that man

00:12:48.280 a lot more power

00:12:49.200 over the relationship too.

00:12:51.440 Because the woman 0.99

00:12:52.280 would not be

00:12:53.280 as comfortable,

00:12:55.280 it's never really comfortable,

00:12:57.160 to be in a,

00:12:58.180 let's say,

00:12:58.460 a bad neighborhood

00:12:59.160 and not have a man

00:13:00.560 in the house

00:13:01.160 if there's also no police.

00:13:03.260 So if you're a woman

00:13:04.180 and some stuff goes down,

00:13:06.700 who do you call?

00:13:08.500 Vigilante?

00:13:09.820 Police?

00:13:10.260 What do you call?

00:13:12.880 So I think in a world

00:13:14.160 with no police,

00:13:15.420 the relative power balance

00:13:17.160 between men and women 0.90

00:13:18.220 would shift fairly radically

00:13:20.880 and men would be

00:13:22.480 suddenly at a greater premium.

00:13:25.800 In other words,

00:13:26.480 if you have a police force,

00:13:28.700 you don't need men 0.95

00:13:29.840 in your town as much

00:13:31.640 because they don't have

00:13:32.440 a protective power.

00:13:34.840 You know,

00:13:35.000 the police are taking

00:13:35.800 some of that,

00:13:36.340 not all of it,

00:13:36.940 of course,

00:13:37.300 but they take

00:13:38.120 some of that burden.

00:13:38.780 So the value of men

00:13:40.520 to society,

00:13:41.800 because we don't have babies,

00:13:43.500 you know,

00:13:43.740 we're not allowed,

00:13:44.520 not allowed,

00:13:45.780 we can't physically

00:13:46.560 have babies,

00:13:47.420 but one of the things

00:13:48.200 we can do is 1.00

00:13:49.140 kill people, 1.00

00:13:50.740 basically. 1.00

00:13:51.680 I mean,

00:13:51.900 that's what,

00:13:52.500 unfortunately,

00:13:53.400 men are optimized

00:13:54.880 for protecting children

00:13:56.560 of their own

00:13:57.800 and killing anything 1.00

00:13:59.520 that gets in the way. 0.99

00:14:00.580 We're sort of,

00:14:01.280 sort of designed

00:14:02.360 for that.

00:14:03.480 And if you take

00:14:05.040 the police away,

00:14:05.880 men would fill 0.95

00:14:06.580 that role.

00:14:08.840 You know,

00:14:09.080 gangs will form,

00:14:10.400 warlord situations,

00:14:11.960 neighborhood watches,

00:14:13.500 but the,

00:14:14.200 you know,

00:14:15.100 the real,

00:14:15.620 the muscle in it

00:14:16.780 would be mostly men.

00:14:18.040 So if you want men 0.78

00:14:19.060 to have more power

00:14:20.140 in poor neighborhoods,

00:14:22.060 get rid of the police.

00:14:23.220 That would be

00:14:23.620 an obvious way

00:14:24.400 to do it.

00:14:25.620 All right,

00:14:25.820 let's talk about,

00:14:26.880 could you ever

00:14:27.500 get rid of the police

00:14:28.580 and have something

00:14:30.880 that's good?

00:14:31.540 All right?

00:14:33.760 Now,

00:14:34.200 your immediate thought,

00:14:35.460 when you think of that,

00:14:36.360 you immediately think,

00:14:37.320 all right,

00:14:37.640 a situation with police,

00:14:39.140 like now,

00:14:40.340 versus a situation

00:14:41.460 where there's just

00:14:42.280 no police.

00:14:43.580 And you,

00:14:44.340 in your mind,

00:14:44.920 you see the criminals

00:14:45.720 running wild

00:14:46.540 and everything's

00:14:47.260 getting looted

00:14:47.840 because there are

00:14:49.000 no police.

00:14:50.000 But I don't think

00:14:50.780 anybody's talking

00:14:51.520 about that.

00:14:53.100 Right?

00:14:53.320 I think that's just

00:14:54.100 a conservative,

00:14:56.080 exaggerated,

00:14:57.000 comic version

00:14:57.920 of what no police

00:14:58.980 means.

00:15:00.080 No police

00:15:00.560 doesn't mean no police.

00:15:02.900 The moment you think

00:15:04.260 that getting rid of

00:15:05.900 or dismantling the police

00:15:07.240 actually means

00:15:08.000 there are no police,

00:15:09.180 then you've completely

00:15:10.160 misunderstood the proposition,

00:15:12.240 in my opinion.

00:15:13.480 In my opinion,

00:15:14.600 what this really means

00:15:15.420 is you're changing

00:15:16.040 the definition

00:15:16.780 of what a police officer is.

00:15:19.140 So that a police officer

00:15:20.440 would no longer be

00:15:21.380 someone who's in,

00:15:22.460 wait for it,

00:15:24.080 wait for it,

00:15:25.200 the key part is coming,

00:15:27.280 a police officer

00:15:28.300 of the future

00:15:29.120 in this

00:15:29.720 police-less town

00:15:31.820 would be somebody

00:15:33.520 who's not in the

00:15:34.200 police union.

00:15:36.560 That's pretty much it.

00:15:38.340 Just somebody

00:15:38.860 who's not in the

00:15:39.560 police union,

00:15:40.580 maybe doesn't even

00:15:41.560 take a paycheck

00:15:42.200 from the city,

00:15:43.680 could be taking

00:15:44.720 a paycheck

00:15:45.140 from the community,

00:15:46.720 homeowners association.

00:15:48.840 You know,

00:15:49.160 you could imagine

00:15:49.740 a lot of different models

00:15:50.860 where there's somebody

00:15:52.380 with professional training,

00:15:54.260 they have a gun,

00:15:55.960 and they have some

00:15:56.600 authority,

00:15:57.480 and they have a paycheck.

00:15:59.440 So if you've got a gun,

00:16:00.940 you've got training

00:16:01.960 and law enforcement

00:16:02.880 type stuff,

00:16:03.740 security type stuff,

00:16:05.000 and you've got a paycheck,

00:16:06.760 you don't have to be

00:16:08.320 a police officer

00:16:09.600 in the police union,

00:16:11.200 you could just be

00:16:12.180 the person they hired

00:16:13.200 to take care of things.

00:16:14.800 If you remove

00:16:15.880 the police unions,

00:16:17.620 say the critics,

00:16:18.760 and I don't have a,

00:16:19.700 I don't have an

00:16:20.200 independent opinion on this,

00:16:21.520 because I'd have to

00:16:22.120 dig into it a lot more,

00:16:23.540 but the concern

00:16:25.620 is that the unions

00:16:26.880 are too strong.

00:16:29.200 And really,

00:16:30.080 I think when people

00:16:31.180 are talking about

00:16:31.920 getting rid of the police,

00:16:33.620 it's really a code

00:16:35.100 for get rid of

00:16:35.940 the police unions

00:16:37.060 because probably

00:16:38.620 the only way

00:16:39.180 you could do it

00:16:39.900 is to say,

00:16:41.200 well, we don't have police.

00:16:42.900 We got rid of our police,

00:16:44.200 so there's nobody

00:16:45.000 to be in the union,

00:16:45.980 but we have these

00:16:47.000 private contractors

00:16:48.140 we hired

00:16:48.820 for exactly

00:16:49.980 the same price.

00:16:50.880 that are taking care

00:16:52.560 of things,

00:16:53.020 but they're not

00:16:53.440 part of a union,

00:16:54.580 and they also

00:16:55.800 maybe don't

00:16:56.800 meet with each other

00:16:58.380 so much,

00:16:58.900 so they're not

00:16:59.340 protecting each other.

00:17:01.980 You can imagine,

00:17:03.200 for example,

00:17:04.760 ways to

00:17:05.700 get better prosecutions,

00:17:08.100 you can imagine

00:17:09.460 rules changes

00:17:10.280 like that,

00:17:10.960 you can imagine

00:17:11.520 more security cameras,

00:17:12.580 et cetera.

00:17:13.400 But let me throw

00:17:14.380 a wild idea

00:17:15.500 into the mix.

00:17:16.900 You ready?

00:17:18.460 This one you'll have

00:17:19.340 to just think about

00:17:20.160 for a while.

00:17:20.880 Because you're going

00:17:22.320 to have to pull together

00:17:23.100 a whole bunch of

00:17:23.740 imaginary future elements

00:17:26.260 to see if this makes

00:17:27.320 sense in your head.

00:17:28.080 And it goes like this.

00:17:29.780 If you wanted to

00:17:30.940 design a town

00:17:32.820 from scratch

00:17:34.720 in which there were,

00:17:36.760 you didn't need police.

00:17:38.940 And when I say

00:17:39.660 don't need police,

00:17:40.580 you should always

00:17:41.140 translate that

00:17:41.880 into your head

00:17:42.420 to you don't need

00:17:43.840 much in the way

00:17:45.380 of police.

00:17:45.880 because you'd always

00:17:47.640 need at least

00:17:48.460 a police officer

00:17:49.520 or somebody

00:17:50.300 who does a job

00:17:51.120 like that

00:17:51.820 to be within

00:17:52.960 driving distance.

00:17:54.280 So in every situation,

00:17:55.820 there's going to be

00:17:57.000 somebody with a gun

00:17:58.120 and training

00:17:59.540 and a car

00:18:00.300 who can get there

00:18:01.660 relatively quickly

00:18:02.600 in every situation.

00:18:03.400 So there will be

00:18:04.560 no exception to that.

00:18:05.660 But you could reduce

00:18:07.700 what you would call

00:18:08.600 a police force

00:18:09.500 from a lot

00:18:10.900 to some smaller presence

00:18:13.120 and wait for this idea.

00:18:15.280 This will blow your mind.

00:18:16.480 You ready?

00:18:18.500 I predict

00:18:21.080 slash speculate

00:18:22.500 that you could get rid

00:18:24.440 of 75% of police

00:18:26.440 functions

00:18:28.300 if you had

00:18:30.300 only self-driving cars

00:18:32.320 that were

00:18:34.080 commonly owned

00:18:35.120 like Uber.

00:18:36.480 So imagine you had

00:18:37.280 a town

00:18:37.700 in which you couldn't

00:18:38.840 own a private automobile

00:18:40.280 but you could walk

00:18:41.900 out to the sidewalk

00:18:42.680 and a self-driving car

00:18:44.880 would pull up

00:18:45.500 and stop

00:18:46.040 and you just get in

00:18:47.000 and you say to the car

00:18:48.080 you know,

00:18:49.340 take me to Safeway

00:18:50.580 and it just drives

00:18:51.800 you to Safeway.

00:18:53.040 Now imagine that

00:18:53.740 all of the cars

00:18:54.640 are also self-driving

00:18:56.160 and they are also

00:18:57.540 aware of all

00:18:58.440 the other cars.

00:18:59.880 So the odds

00:19:00.560 of a traffic accident

00:19:02.600 drop to zero.

00:19:05.840 Now again,

00:19:06.640 use your imagination

00:19:07.560 that when I say

00:19:08.200 traffic accidents

00:19:09.240 drop to zero

00:19:10.720 nothing drops to zero.

00:19:13.200 But you know

00:19:13.880 what I'm talking about.

00:19:14.520 It just gets really,

00:19:15.300 really small.

00:19:16.280 So you have

00:19:16.960 a really small accident

00:19:18.160 so now you don't need

00:19:19.180 police to deal with

00:19:20.220 traffic fatalities

00:19:21.500 and accidents.

00:19:22.640 You don't need

00:19:23.200 police to pull people over.

00:19:26.080 How many

00:19:26.920 of the fatal

00:19:28.320 police encounters

00:19:29.320 happened

00:19:30.040 with vehicles

00:19:31.660 involved?

00:19:33.140 Quite a few.

00:19:34.900 Right?

00:19:35.280 How many gangbangers

00:19:36.400 are going to get

00:19:37.380 into a vehicle

00:19:38.380 that has internal

00:19:39.400 cameras on

00:19:40.260 all the time?

00:19:41.700 Imagine getting

00:19:42.440 into your

00:19:43.620 self-driving Uber 0.69

00:19:44.720 and you're a gang member

00:19:46.380 and as soon as you get

00:19:47.860 in the cameras

00:19:48.420 are on you

00:19:48.860 all the time.

00:19:49.760 You're just always

00:19:50.240 on camera

00:19:50.760 when you're

00:19:51.200 in the Uber.

00:19:53.340 Now,

00:19:54.780 so you wouldn't

00:19:55.280 be able to talk

00:19:55.900 about stuff.

00:19:56.700 You wouldn't be able

00:19:57.220 to take out

00:19:57.840 your cool gun.

00:19:59.420 You wouldn't be able

00:20:00.040 to do much

00:20:00.480 criminal stuff

00:20:01.300 in the car

00:20:02.120 and it would be

00:20:03.460 such an uncool car

00:20:04.880 that you wouldn't

00:20:06.220 feel like

00:20:06.740 going and doing

00:20:08.100 some crime

00:20:08.700 in that car

00:20:09.380 because it would

00:20:10.100 be like,

00:20:10.880 all right,

00:20:11.280 we did some

00:20:11.700 bad stuff.

00:20:12.480 Jump in the

00:20:13.040 self-driving Prius.

00:20:15.660 Let's get us

00:20:16.200 out of here.

00:20:17.120 So you couldn't

00:20:17.720 have a getaway.

00:20:19.040 You couldn't do

00:20:19.680 a drive-by shooting.

00:20:20.840 You wouldn't have

00:20:21.380 bad traffic stops

00:20:22.560 where somebody

00:20:23.000 gets hurt.

00:20:23.900 You wouldn't have

00:20:24.420 speeding.

00:20:25.080 You wouldn't have

00:20:25.480 drunk driving.

00:20:26.120 You wouldn't have

00:20:26.840 a lot of

00:20:28.700 vehicular problems.

00:20:30.980 Now,

00:20:31.480 imagine you put

00:20:32.240 cameras on the

00:20:34.260 outside of the

00:20:35.220 self-driving cars

00:20:36.180 and these cameras

00:20:37.860 are pointing

00:20:38.400 in every direction

00:20:39.180 and it's part

00:20:40.220 of the navigation

00:20:40.940 but it's also

00:20:42.320 a moving

00:20:43.080 continuous

00:20:43.720 security system

00:20:45.240 because if you're

00:20:46.760 anywhere within

00:20:47.560 view of a road,

00:20:49.500 a car is going

00:20:50.280 to eventually

00:20:50.640 drive by

00:20:51.280 and you're going

00:20:51.740 to be on camera.

00:20:53.080 So you're going

00:20:54.240 to say to yourself,

00:20:54.800 well, I don't

00:20:55.400 like this world

00:20:56.100 with no privacy

00:20:56.880 and self-driving

00:20:57.660 cars.

00:20:58.220 Well, I'm not

00:20:58.840 arguing that.

00:21:00.320 I'm not saying

00:21:01.000 you should live

00:21:01.680 there.

00:21:02.560 I'm just saying

00:21:03.140 that you could

00:21:03.960 design a town

00:21:05.680 from the ground

00:21:06.420 up in which

00:21:07.840 you had almost

00:21:08.500 no need for

00:21:09.040 police.

00:21:09.880 Here's another

00:21:10.400 suggestion.

00:21:12.780 Make sure you

00:21:13.580 have enough

00:21:14.020 grandmothers.

00:21:16.020 Make sure you

00:21:16.880 have enough

00:21:17.260 grandmothers

00:21:18.000 seated in

00:21:19.560 places around.

00:21:21.200 Now, this is

00:21:22.200 an idea that

00:21:23.360 I've heard

00:21:23.720 from black

00:21:26.240 people who 0.98

00:21:27.320 were giving

00:21:28.540 me some

00:21:28.960 insight that

00:21:30.040 I didn't

00:21:30.340 have.

00:21:32.040 So the next

00:21:32.860 thing you hear

00:21:33.460 comes from

00:21:34.760 other people

00:21:35.440 who know what

00:21:36.180 they're talking

00:21:36.600 about.

00:21:37.300 So when you

00:21:37.720 say, Scott,

00:21:38.320 you don't know

00:21:38.700 what that world

00:21:39.200 is like.

00:21:40.060 You're not part

00:21:40.800 of that culture.

00:21:41.840 Right, right,

00:21:42.460 right.

00:21:42.660 I'm just passing

00:21:43.240 it along.

00:21:44.020 And it goes

00:21:45.240 like this.

00:21:47.380 Apparently,

00:21:48.000 the elder

00:21:48.580 females in 0.78

00:21:50.500 the African-American

00:21:51.600 urban community

00:21:52.720 in the United

00:21:53.240 States have

00:21:54.360 an unusual

00:21:54.940 amount of

00:21:55.460 power.

00:21:56.960 Meaning that

00:21:57.940 if I walk

00:21:59.160 up to a 0.92

00:21:59.940 young black

00:22:01.060 man in an

00:22:01.740 urban neighborhood

00:22:02.360 and started

00:22:02.920 trouble, I

00:22:04.100 will get my 1.00

00:22:04.540 ass kicked. 1.00

00:22:06.020 You would 1.00

00:22:06.400 get your 1.00

00:22:06.720 ass kicked 1.00

00:22:07.160 too. 0.99

00:22:08.520 But his

00:22:09.000 grandma doesn't.

00:22:11.080 So grandma

00:22:12.300 can walk up

00:22:13.480 to a group

00:22:14.100 of dealers

00:22:15.820 on the street

00:22:16.580 or gang

00:22:17.020 members and

00:22:18.000 tell them to

00:22:18.700 get home and

00:22:19.880 cut their hair

00:22:20.780 and get

00:22:21.280 off the

00:22:21.760 street.

00:22:22.860 Grandma can

00:22:23.560 do that

00:22:23.920 apparently.

00:22:25.740 I'm told,

00:22:26.760 and again,

00:22:27.360 I have no

00:22:27.840 independent way

00:22:28.600 to know any

00:22:29.100 of this to

00:22:29.500 be true,

00:22:30.420 but I'm told

00:22:31.040 by people

00:22:31.520 who know

00:22:31.780 what they're

00:22:32.000 talking about

00:22:32.580 that culturally

00:22:34.340 speaking,

00:22:35.280 you throw a

00:22:35.880 grandma in

00:22:36.500 the mix,

00:22:37.620 and really I'm

00:22:38.220 just talking

00:22:38.560 about the

00:22:38.920 older female

00:22:40.060 parts of the

00:22:41.040 community,

00:22:41.420 you just put

00:22:41.860 one in the

00:22:42.280 mix and it

00:22:42.800 just sort of

00:22:43.180 ruins everything.

00:22:44.780 It ruins all

00:22:45.460 the crime.

00:22:47.220 Right?

00:22:48.780 Now, I don't

00:22:49.540 know that that

00:22:50.020 to be true.

00:22:51.320 But you

00:22:51.720 can imagine

00:22:52.300 engineering a

00:22:53.600 community in

00:22:55.440 which you

00:22:56.300 have strategically

00:22:57.240 placed literally

00:22:58.560 a grandmother

00:22:59.300 in places that

00:23:01.340 have great,

00:23:02.580 let's say,

00:23:02.920 apartment or

00:23:03.720 views where

00:23:05.460 they can see

00:23:05.920 the street.

00:23:07.020 So every time

00:23:07.740 you go out and

00:23:08.340 you're sort of

00:23:09.020 hanging out in

00:23:09.520 the street,

00:23:11.040 somebody's grandma

00:23:11.960 is watching you.

00:23:13.560 And they can

00:23:14.380 call their

00:23:14.820 security people

00:23:15.660 if they don't

00:23:16.620 like it,

00:23:17.300 but even better,

00:23:18.100 they can call

00:23:19.300 your mom.

00:23:20.280 They can call

00:23:20.980 your mom and

00:23:22.280 say,

00:23:22.760 did you know

00:23:24.120 that your son

00:23:25.080 is hanging out

00:23:25.980 in the street

00:23:26.440 and he looks

00:23:27.020 like he's getting

00:23:27.600 out of control

00:23:28.160 there?

00:23:28.460 Maybe you

00:23:28.720 want to call

00:23:29.060 him home?

00:23:30.660 I don't know.

00:23:31.260 Would that

00:23:31.660 work?

00:23:32.440 Now, again,

00:23:33.200 every single

00:23:34.320 idea that you

00:23:34.940 hear along

00:23:35.540 these lines,

00:23:37.200 you have to

00:23:38.240 say to yourself,

00:23:39.040 could you

00:23:39.740 test it?

00:23:41.040 Is there a way

00:23:41.580 to test that

00:23:42.340 in a small

00:23:42.880 setting?

00:23:43.300 And if

00:23:44.220 you can

00:23:44.620 test it,

00:23:45.820 and if

00:23:46.280 it has

00:23:46.640 even a

00:23:47.780 little bit

00:23:48.240 of rational

00:23:50.000 good thinking

00:23:52.580 behind it,

00:23:53.940 why not?

00:23:54.880 Why not

00:23:55.300 just test it?

00:23:56.500 We've got time.

00:23:57.620 It's a long-term

00:23:58.460 problem.

00:23:59.840 Maybe long-term

00:24:01.020 solutions are

00:24:01.660 what we need.

00:24:03.160 So,

00:24:04.420 then imagine

00:24:05.420 this.

00:24:06.160 Imagine a town

00:24:07.060 in which you

00:24:07.720 got rid of

00:24:08.740 identification.

00:24:11.140 suppose all

00:24:13.400 of your

00:24:13.680 identification

00:24:14.260 in the town

00:24:15.220 was biometric.

00:24:17.180 So,

00:24:17.520 it's either

00:24:17.820 your fingerprint

00:24:18.540 or your

00:24:19.980 face or

00:24:20.620 something.

00:24:21.580 So,

00:24:21.760 nobody has

00:24:22.880 to show

00:24:23.320 ID anymore.

00:24:25.060 Do you

00:24:25.360 know what

00:24:25.700 would happen

00:24:26.440 to crime

00:24:27.220 in a city

00:24:28.740 where nobody

00:24:29.360 had to show

00:24:30.100 ID because

00:24:31.460 identification

00:24:32.060 was 100%

00:24:33.300 certain every

00:24:33.940 time?

00:24:34.860 You would

00:24:35.160 just walk

00:24:35.560 into the

00:24:35.920 store and

00:24:37.040 the point-of-sale

00:24:37.820 terminal would

00:24:38.500 see you coming

00:24:39.140 and your

00:24:40.240 face and

00:24:41.040 your identification

00:24:41.680 would pop up

00:24:42.540 on the screen

00:24:43.160 and then

00:24:44.460 you'd say,

00:24:45.600 I'd like a

00:24:46.640 pack of

00:24:47.580 whatever.

00:24:48.540 They hand it

00:24:49.080 to you and

00:24:50.440 price pops up

00:24:51.740 on the screen

00:24:52.300 and you take

00:24:52.940 your phone and

00:24:53.540 you go,

00:24:53.940 okay,

00:24:54.900 boop, 0.99

00:24:55.340 nobody touches

00:24:55.980 any money.

00:24:57.160 You just touch

00:24:57.760 your own phone

00:24:58.420 and it just

00:24:58.920 sends a signal.

00:25:00.320 Identification

00:25:00.800 is done because

00:25:01.500 they saw you.

00:25:02.800 Now,

00:25:03.080 how much crime

00:25:05.180 could you

00:25:05.640 eliminate by

00:25:07.340 making sure

00:25:07.980 that identification

00:25:08.780 is 100%

00:25:09.920 every time?

00:25:11.040 You'd have

00:25:12.000 to walk in

00:25:12.480 with actually

00:25:13.000 a mask on

00:25:13.820 to commit

00:25:15.340 any crime

00:25:15.860 at all.

00:25:16.620 You couldn't

00:25:16.980 even walk

00:25:17.440 in the front

00:25:17.900 door unless

00:25:19.480 you had a

00:25:19.880 mask on.

00:25:20.980 And if you

00:25:21.380 had a mask

00:25:21.960 on, that

00:25:23.920 should trigger

00:25:24.620 a, let's

00:25:26.360 say, whatever

00:25:26.880 replaces the

00:25:27.820 police, a

00:25:29.020 security force

00:25:29.960 immediately.

00:25:31.240 Let's say that

00:25:32.240 you've got

00:25:32.740 cameras everywhere.

00:25:33.860 This is the

00:25:34.340 future town that

00:25:35.480 doesn't exist.

00:25:36.120 and there's

00:25:37.600 somebody who's

00:25:38.060 up to no

00:25:38.460 good and

00:25:38.960 they know

00:25:39.300 there's cameras

00:25:39.860 everywhere so

00:25:40.380 they put on

00:25:40.760 a mask.

00:25:42.200 And let's

00:25:42.500 say it's not

00:25:43.080 the pandemic

00:25:43.700 so a mask

00:25:45.400 is unusual.

00:25:46.600 Well, the

00:25:46.980 camera sees a

00:25:48.560 person and

00:25:49.220 sees a mask

00:25:50.180 because I think

00:25:51.160 if you can do

00:25:51.740 facial recognition

00:25:52.760 it stands to

00:25:54.060 reason you could

00:25:54.580 also identify a

00:25:55.460 mask, I think,

00:25:57.200 you know, by

00:25:57.700 process of

00:25:58.480 elimination, you

00:25:59.240 know, if

00:25:59.900 there's not

00:26:00.300 enough of a

00:26:00.920 face you can

00:26:01.620 see, it must

00:26:02.140 be a mask.

00:26:02.720 mask, the

00:26:03.560 moment the

00:26:04.920 camera sees a

00:26:05.640 mask, it

00:26:06.360 should dispatch.

00:26:08.280 You know, it

00:26:08.520 should be illegal

00:26:09.100 to wear a mask

00:26:10.020 in the future

00:26:11.600 non-pandemic,

00:26:12.960 you know, town

00:26:13.580 that hasn't been

00:26:14.280 built yet, make

00:26:15.400 it illegal to

00:26:16.020 wear a mask so

00:26:17.540 you don't get

00:26:17.920 any antifa

00:26:18.540 problems, and

00:26:19.980 then as soon as

00:26:20.960 anybody shows up

00:26:21.760 with a mask, if

00:26:22.540 a camera sees

00:26:23.240 them, it's an

00:26:23.980 immediate dispatch.

00:26:25.440 And let's say

00:26:25.900 the first dispatch,

00:26:27.120 wait for it, is

00:26:28.760 a drone.

00:26:30.280 Yeah.

00:26:31.200 See where I'm

00:26:31.720 going with this?

00:26:32.720 The first

00:26:33.480 dispatch is a

00:26:35.300 drone.

00:26:36.520 So a guy puts

00:26:37.340 on a mask, and

00:26:38.860 you have to walk

00:26:39.680 there because you

00:26:40.720 don't want to use

00:26:41.360 your self-driving

00:26:42.440 Ubers for your

00:26:43.180 getaway car, so

00:26:44.320 already it's got to

00:26:45.420 be within walking

00:26:46.160 distance or it's

00:26:46.940 too hard to do and

00:26:48.180 get away with it.

00:26:49.360 So a criminal is

00:26:50.520 within walking

00:26:51.140 distance, puts on

00:26:52.020 his mask in the

00:26:53.140 alleyway, goes

00:26:54.360 into the convenience

00:26:55.500 store, and robs it.

00:26:57.140 The moment the

00:26:57.740 mask went on and

00:26:58.860 he walked past the

00:27:00.860 camera, a drone

00:27:02.620 was dispatched,

00:27:04.260 small one, and

00:27:05.700 the drone came up

00:27:06.520 from, I don't

00:27:06.920 know, a block

00:27:07.380 away, because you've

00:27:08.380 got drones on

00:27:09.760 rooftops, strategically

00:27:11.820 placed, so there's

00:27:13.020 maybe one drone

00:27:14.420 every block or so.

00:27:16.240 The drone goes

00:27:17.240 straight up the

00:27:18.160 moment the camera

00:27:19.080 sees that a guy has

00:27:20.000 a mask, goes

00:27:21.060 straight up, goes

00:27:21.820 right over it,

00:27:22.960 identifies the person

00:27:24.280 with the mask as

00:27:25.040 they walk out, and

00:27:26.220 then follows them

00:27:26.980 home.

00:27:28.280 Just follows them

00:27:29.160 home.

00:27:29.780 The police, or the

00:27:32.100 replacement for the

00:27:32.960 police, who are some

00:27:33.680 kind of security

00:27:34.380 force with no union,

00:27:36.560 get an alert, and

00:27:38.520 they see that the

00:27:39.360 drone has already

00:27:40.300 dispatched, no

00:27:41.460 humans involved,

00:27:42.700 because the drone

00:27:43.280 isn't doing anything

00:27:43.940 dangerous, it's just

00:27:44.780 watching people.

00:27:45.880 So it jumps up and

00:27:47.200 the drone is watching

00:27:48.020 the sky, and you see

00:27:49.700 the picture from the

00:27:50.520 camera, so the drone

00:27:51.740 footage and now the

00:27:52.780 security camera both

00:27:53.820 show up on your phone,

00:27:54.940 so you can see them

00:27:55.700 both.

00:27:56.360 You can see what

00:27:57.060 the drone saw, and

00:27:58.560 why it launched.

00:27:59.900 Oh, guy with mask

00:28:01.120 walking into 7-Eleven,

00:28:02.980 and drone got his

00:28:04.620 identification, no,

00:28:08.400 it's not an

00:28:08.900 identification because

00:28:09.700 he's wearing a mask,

00:28:10.620 but it's okay, the

00:28:11.340 drone is following

00:28:12.100 him, and it looks

00:28:13.800 like, okay, drone

00:28:15.240 is, looks like he'll

00:28:17.040 be going past Elm

00:28:18.240 Street in about a

00:28:19.380 minute.

00:28:20.380 I'll just send him

00:28:21.220 a message on his

00:28:21.960 phone.

00:28:23.100 Hey, I see you in

00:28:25.220 that self-driving

00:28:25.940 car, and you've

00:28:28.120 been identified as

00:28:29.380 having robbed the

00:28:30.120 convenience store, if

00:28:31.640 you go back and give

00:28:33.440 everything back, we'll

00:28:34.420 let it go.

00:28:36.000 Let's say there was no

00:28:36.980 gun involved, you

00:28:38.540 know, maybe it was a

00:28:39.620 fake gun or something,

00:28:40.440 I don't know, but you

00:28:41.480 can imagine the

00:28:42.120 situation, you can

00:28:44.560 begin to imagine that

00:28:46.880 you could actually get

00:28:47.660 rid of police, but in

00:28:50.480 order to do it, you

00:28:51.360 would also have to get

00:28:52.120 rid of privacy, right?

00:28:53.680 So all of you who

00:28:55.020 are saying 1984 and

00:28:56.700 Big Brother and all

00:28:57.860 of our privacy is

00:28:58.700 gone, that's exactly

00:28:59.480 what I'm talking

00:29:00.000 about, that's exactly

00:29:01.400 what I'm talking

00:29:02.000 about.

00:29:02.660 So you don't have to

00:29:03.560 tell me that, that's

00:29:04.520 what I'm telling you.

00:29:05.820 I'm telling you there

00:29:07.400 would be lots of

00:29:08.340 surveillance and a lot

00:29:10.120 of people wouldn't

00:29:10.600 like it, but here's

00:29:11.480 the catch, totally

00:29:13.160 optional, it's

00:29:14.880 optional.

00:29:16.360 You say you

00:29:17.240 wouldn't live there,

00:29:18.040 and I say, good for

00:29:19.000 you, go live

00:29:20.100 somewhere else.

00:29:21.260 That's it.

00:29:21.740 Go live somewhere

00:29:23.260 else.

00:29:24.860 It's okay with me.

00:29:26.460 All right, here's

00:29:26.900 another idea to throw

00:29:28.260 on this.

00:29:28.660 I said that the

00:29:29.420 self-driving cars

00:29:31.140 would all have

00:29:31.600 cameras, and

00:29:32.820 somebody in the

00:29:34.180 comments said, I'll

00:29:36.720 paraphrase, but you

00:29:37.800 don't want cameras on

00:29:38.760 you all the time.

00:29:39.640 Sometimes you need a

00:29:40.460 little privacy, if you

00:29:41.200 know what I mean.

00:29:42.260 And here's my idea.

00:29:45.420 All the cameras would

00:29:46.840 be encrypted, and

00:29:49.380 nobody could unencrypt

00:29:51.500 them, including the

00:29:52.560 company that built the

00:29:54.280 encryption, so like

00:29:55.400 Apple does.

00:29:56.080 Apple makes an

00:29:56.820 encryption for your

00:29:57.660 phone that

00:29:58.900 allegedly even they

00:30:00.080 can't break.

00:30:00.820 There's just no way to

00:30:01.560 get it.

00:30:02.380 But there is one way

00:30:04.600 to unlock the video

00:30:06.660 that's running all the

00:30:08.100 time inside and

00:30:09.100 outside your car.

00:30:11.160 There's only one way

00:30:11.800 to unlock it, with a

00:30:14.140 court order by a

00:30:15.400 special court, whose

00:30:17.060 only job, just one

00:30:18.660 job, is to unlock

00:30:19.820 those videos, only if

00:30:22.300 there's so much

00:30:23.120 evidence of a crime

00:30:24.300 that it makes sense.

00:30:26.620 And then, only those

00:30:28.160 judges would get to

00:30:29.160 see the full video, and

00:30:30.940 then only the judges

00:30:32.060 would get to edit

00:30:33.520 out anything that was

00:30:35.120 just embarrassing or

00:30:36.620 personal, just down to

00:30:38.140 the part that told you

00:30:39.280 whether a crime

00:30:40.040 happened or did not

00:30:41.040 happen.

00:30:41.360 So, in other words,

00:30:44.660 there would be lots of

00:30:45.560 recording all the time

00:30:46.940 because storage is

00:30:47.940 cheap, but it would be

00:30:49.580 encrypted, and literally

00:30:50.740 nobody could unencrypt it

00:30:52.140 unless it was a specific

00:30:53.800 crime, went through a

00:30:54.840 court system, special

00:30:56.380 court unlocked it, and

00:30:58.140 then edited it down to

00:30:59.340 just the part that

00:31:00.060 mattered.

00:31:01.120 Now, would there be

00:31:02.200 FISA-like abuse?

00:31:04.380 Yeah, there would be.

00:31:05.660 Because literally, every

00:31:06.760 system you build has

00:31:07.820 problems, right?

00:31:08.920 So there's no way you

00:31:09.960 could build that system

00:31:10.820 without problems, but

00:31:12.580 you'd probably learn how

00:31:13.760 to tweak it and fix it

00:31:15.440 and adjust it and move

00:31:16.460 forward, just like

00:31:17.800 everything else.

00:31:19.200 All right.

00:31:20.240 So, you don't need to

00:31:22.140 love all of those

00:31:23.000 ideas, which would not

00:31:24.520 be the point at all.

00:31:25.840 The point is that you

00:31:27.360 actually could imagine,

00:31:29.040 I think you could, a

00:31:30.760 world that did not have

00:31:32.320 a standard police force

00:31:33.940 in which you could

00:31:35.200 legitimately say we got

00:31:36.400 rid of the police, but

00:31:38.200 we replaced all those

00:31:39.420 functions with these

00:31:40.400 other better ideas and

00:31:41.680 new designs and stuff

00:31:42.740 like that.

00:31:43.020 I think it's possible.

00:31:47.820 For those of you who

00:31:49.100 are talking about the

00:31:49.960 FISA court, I

00:31:52.280 acknowledged you don't

00:31:53.500 need to tell me that

00:31:55.600 there would be abuse,

00:31:56.960 because I'm telling you

00:31:58.420 there would be abuse.

00:32:00.120 So you don't have to all

00:32:01.780 tell me that the FISA

00:32:03.560 court had abuses and

00:32:05.140 therefore this would have

00:32:06.040 abuse.

00:32:06.340 I'm telling you that

00:32:07.660 there would be abuse,

00:32:09.580 but it might still be

00:32:10.320 worth it if you net it

00:32:12.520 all out.

00:32:13.380 All right.

00:32:13.680 So I've been listening to

00:32:14.400 this whole national

00:32:17.440 racism conversation, and

00:32:19.560 I've been trying to

00:32:20.460 build a framework in my

00:32:23.740 mind to understand it

00:32:25.540 all.

00:32:26.240 Because until you

00:32:26.980 understand it all, you

00:32:28.820 can't really move

00:32:29.700 forward, right?

00:32:30.680 So I'm going to give you

00:32:31.660 my current understanding,

00:32:32.980 and of course

00:32:34.920 everything's subject to

00:32:35.920 change, but this is my

00:32:36.900 best understanding of

00:32:38.040 where we're at, and

00:32:40.120 why we're having trouble

00:32:41.720 talking, especially on

00:32:43.200 the left and the right.

00:32:44.980 A lot of this came

00:32:46.260 after talking to

00:32:48.840 Hotep Jesus, which

00:32:51.180 made me think kind of

00:32:52.760 deeply on some things I

00:32:53.820 hadn't thought before.

00:32:55.580 And as you already know,

00:32:57.020 the left and the right

00:32:57.840 have very different,

00:32:58.880 let's see if I can get

00:32:59.700 the light off of this,

00:33:00.560 have very different

00:33:03.240 ways of looking at the

00:33:04.860 world, but they also

00:33:05.560 have different language.

00:33:07.820 And you probably all

00:33:10.500 suspect that part of the

00:33:12.540 problem with these

00:33:13.660 protests and the, you

00:33:15.420 know, what seems to be

00:33:16.780 some kind of a division

00:33:18.480 but not really, in the

00:33:20.340 sense that we all seem

00:33:21.280 to be on the same team,

00:33:22.940 and yet we're acting like

00:33:24.160 we're not.

00:33:24.800 It's like we're talking

00:33:25.620 different languages or

00:33:26.700 something.

00:33:27.440 And here's why I think

00:33:28.860 that's true.

00:33:29.340 I think that

00:33:30.780 conservatives, and then

00:33:31.800 I'm just going to lump

00:33:32.600 everybody on the left,

00:33:33.660 all the progressives and

00:33:34.960 liberals and Democrats

00:33:36.040 and stuff.

00:33:37.000 So I'm just going to

00:33:37.740 take these two categories.

00:33:38.900 And I would say that

00:33:39.480 they focus differently,

00:33:41.560 and that this is where

00:33:42.660 some of the source of

00:33:44.280 the problem is.

00:33:45.360 In my observation,

00:33:48.700 this is not based on

00:33:49.760 research, it's just

00:33:50.580 observation, it seems

00:33:52.120 that conservatives focus

00:33:53.260 on respect.

00:33:54.520 They also have empathy.

00:33:55.900 Whereas the left seems

00:33:59.700 to focus on the

00:34:00.660 empathy, but of course

00:34:02.160 they also have respect.

00:34:03.940 So it's not that one

00:34:04.740 has all of one and

00:34:06.940 none of the other.

00:34:07.820 It's a matter of

00:34:08.740 focus.

00:34:10.360 And here's the

00:34:11.360 different reasons why

00:34:13.140 they focus differently.

00:34:14.860 I think conservatives

00:34:15.720 say that empathy is a

00:34:16.900 bad system.

00:34:18.440 That you can have

00:34:19.660 empathy, you can feel

00:34:20.780 empathy, but displaying

00:34:23.020 empathy is a bad

00:34:24.860 system that's bad

00:34:25.900 for everybody.

00:34:26.740 It's bad for the

00:34:27.480 person you're displaying

00:34:28.360 the empathy for, it's

00:34:29.860 bad for you, it's bad

00:34:31.240 for everybody.

00:34:32.000 It's just all-around

00:34:32.880 bad.

00:34:33.880 And here's why.

00:34:36.480 If you let empathy

00:34:38.520 be part of your

00:34:40.440 structure, then the

00:34:42.380 person who complains

00:34:43.700 the most effectively

00:34:44.980 gets the power.

00:34:47.080 That would be the

00:34:48.100 system.

00:34:48.920 If empathy drives

00:34:50.440 your system, then

00:34:52.180 whoever complains

00:34:53.400 the most effectively

00:34:54.400 gets the most

00:34:55.460 power.

00:34:56.540 Can you build a

00:34:57.640 system around who

00:34:59.560 complains the most

00:35:00.720 effectively is

00:35:02.460 transferred wealth

00:35:03.400 and power?

00:35:04.740 Now when I say

00:35:05.340 transferred wealth,

00:35:06.340 if you transfer it

00:35:07.320 to poor people, it

00:35:09.040 doesn't feel like

00:35:09.620 wealth, of course, but

00:35:10.500 just transferring

00:35:11.100 resources, let's say,

00:35:12.140 not wealth.

00:35:14.360 So I would say that

00:35:15.900 conservatives are

00:35:17.680 seen as monsters, in

00:35:21.180 a sense, by the

00:35:22.600 left, because the

00:35:24.240 left keeps saying,

00:35:26.100 why can't you show 0.77

00:35:27.040 me that black lives

00:35:28.000 matter?

00:35:29.080 Why can't you show

00:35:29.880 me empathy?

00:35:31.000 What is the entire

00:35:32.020 complaint about

00:35:32.860 President Trump's

00:35:33.840 handling of the

00:35:35.500 protests?

00:35:36.520 The complaints about

00:35:37.660 President Trump are

00:35:38.700 almost entirely, he's

00:35:41.320 not showing, and

00:35:43.320 it's the showing that

00:35:44.500 matters, he's not

00:35:45.440 showing the empathy.

00:35:47.680 Now he agreed

00:35:49.380 instantly and

00:35:51.060 completely with what

00:35:53.020 the protesters were

00:35:54.240 saying about George

00:35:55.100 Floyd.

00:35:55.880 Complete agreement,

00:35:57.880 complete agreement.

00:35:59.720 And when President

00:36:01.180 Trump speaks about

00:36:02.900 George Floyd, is he

00:36:05.760 speaking from respect,

00:36:07.960 primarily, or empathy,

00:36:11.340 primarily?

00:36:12.620 I think you'd agree

00:36:13.880 that he's done both.

00:36:15.560 He has said words that

00:36:17.040 can only be interpreted

00:36:18.400 as showing empathy, and

00:36:20.720 he has shown great

00:36:22.300 respect.

00:36:23.600 I think you'd agree.

00:36:25.020 He has shown great

00:36:26.100 respect to the family

00:36:27.280 and also to George

00:36:29.220 Floyd.

00:36:29.700 Now, of course, the

00:36:30.300 critics are trying to

00:36:31.220 find something he said

00:36:32.300 that makes it look like

00:36:33.660 that's not the case, but

00:36:34.820 it is the case.

00:36:35.820 He has shown tremendous

00:36:36.840 respect, not as much

00:36:39.600 empathy as the left

00:36:40.780 would want, but the

00:36:42.240 right doesn't want that

00:36:43.080 empathy because it

00:36:43.880 transfers power.

00:36:46.040 And if you said to the

00:36:47.380 left, well, why are you

00:36:48.640 focusing on empathy

00:36:49.660 instead of respect?

00:36:52.900 Respect has the sense

00:36:54.760 in it that we have a

00:36:56.260 constitution and everybody

00:36:57.520 is treated the same.

00:36:59.260 So everybody is treated

00:37:00.480 with the same respect

00:37:01.940 under the law, under the

00:37:03.420 constitution, and under

00:37:04.660 God if you're a believer.

00:37:05.620 So respect is sort of

00:37:08.020 like the key thing

00:37:09.220 here.

00:37:10.020 If you get this right,

00:37:12.000 then everybody who's on

00:37:15.020 the right is going to

00:37:16.140 like you.

00:37:16.820 Now, I've said before

00:37:17.860 that my secret weapon,

00:37:22.120 if you can call it that,

00:37:23.540 for being accepted, and

00:37:25.700 I'll use the word

00:37:26.240 accepted, by the audience

00:37:28.740 that's watching me right

00:37:29.600 now, which are primarily

00:37:30.880 conservatives and

00:37:31.860 Republicans and pro-Trumpers,

00:37:33.600 probably 90% if you are,

00:37:35.620 and the reason you

00:37:36.460 accept me, even when I

00:37:37.840 say directly and often

00:37:39.000 that I'm left of

00:37:40.100 Bernie, is because

00:37:42.280 why?

00:37:44.120 Why do you accept me

00:37:45.640 when you know I

00:37:47.040 disagree with you on

00:37:48.080 such fundamental things

00:37:49.400 and that I've proven

00:37:50.940 over and over again

00:37:51.800 that I'm left of

00:37:53.140 Bernie?

00:37:53.920 The reason that the

00:37:55.180 right accepts me is

00:37:57.140 that I give this, I

00:37:59.040 don't just expect it.

00:38:00.840 I don't just expect

00:38:02.340 respect, I give it.

00:38:04.440 And what have I told

00:38:06.900 you about reciprocity

00:38:08.060 and about how you

00:38:09.160 control other people?

00:38:11.680 Conservatives do not

00:38:12.680 control me.

00:38:14.200 I control you.

00:38:17.100 In the same way that

00:38:18.160 you control other

00:38:18.920 people, right?

00:38:19.760 Everybody controls

00:38:20.760 other people.

00:38:22.360 And the way I control

00:38:23.780 you and the way I'm

00:38:25.340 controlling you right

00:38:26.160 now, literally right

00:38:27.760 now, I'm controlling

00:38:29.560 you because you're

00:38:30.680 giving me attention,

00:38:32.080 attention, which is

00:38:33.240 what I want.

00:38:34.100 I mean, I wouldn't

00:38:35.060 be doing this if I

00:38:35.880 didn't want people to

00:38:36.700 watch.

00:38:38.140 And because I give you

00:38:39.200 respect, and when I

00:38:40.940 talk about religion,

00:38:41.900 for example, when I

00:38:43.580 talk about religion,

00:38:44.600 I'm not a believer.

00:38:45.980 How easy would it be

00:38:47.620 for me as not a

00:38:49.300 believer to be

00:38:50.000 disrespectful to you

00:38:51.300 if you're a believer?

00:38:52.640 Real easy, right?

00:38:54.320 I've been there.

00:38:55.220 I've done that, right?

00:38:56.900 But my current sort

00:38:58.380 of philosophy of life

00:38:59.480 is that there are

00:39:00.640 just different filters

00:39:01.580 on life, and nobody

00:39:02.480 really has the right

00:39:03.220 answer.

00:39:03.880 So I don't privilege my

00:39:06.500 filter on life.

00:39:08.480 If you have one that

00:39:09.480 works well, and I

00:39:10.500 observe that Christianity 0.99

00:39:11.760 and other religions,

00:39:13.320 they do work well.

00:39:14.700 They work really well

00:39:15.900 for the people using

00:39:16.760 them.

00:39:17.480 So if it works well,

00:39:19.120 I'm really happy for

00:39:20.200 you.

00:39:20.580 That's great.

00:39:21.660 Because I don't think

00:39:22.480 I have the right, you

00:39:23.600 know, I don't think I

00:39:24.500 got the right answer, and

00:39:25.440 you got the wrong one.

00:39:26.880 We're just using

00:39:27.620 different filters.

00:39:28.580 If yours works for you,

00:39:30.080 maybe it wouldn't work

00:39:31.060 for me, but I'm not

00:39:31.920 going to criticize it

00:39:32.740 if it works for you.

00:39:34.100 So I come at you

00:39:35.900 with complete respect.

00:39:38.160 And it's real.

00:39:39.160 It's complete respect.

00:39:41.300 So I can have a

00:39:43.160 conversation with you

00:39:44.100 on any topic, and I

00:39:45.860 can walk away, even

00:39:47.000 if I...

00:39:48.000 Probably the most

00:39:48.860 common thing I hear

00:39:50.100 from people who

00:39:51.040 respond to me privately

00:39:52.380 about the Periscopes

00:39:54.340 is people will say,

00:39:55.560 yeah, you make me

00:39:56.280 really mad, but, you 0.58

00:39:58.480 know, I like tossing

00:39:59.940 these ideas around, so

00:40:01.040 I keep coming back.

00:40:02.740 So that's what I'm

00:40:04.180 going for.

00:40:05.120 I don't mind that you

00:40:06.140 get mad at an opinion

00:40:07.580 as long as you know

00:40:08.920 it's not about us,

00:40:10.240 right?

00:40:10.600 It's not about me and

00:40:11.460 you.

00:40:12.320 We're talking about the

00:40:13.340 opinion, your opinion,

00:40:14.540 my opinion.

00:40:15.040 They live separately.

00:40:16.220 They're like creatures

00:40:17.640 we're watching.

00:40:20.000 So what do you do

00:40:21.360 about this?

00:40:21.940 Oh, and then there's

00:40:22.760 one other extra

00:40:23.620 confounder, which is

00:40:25.400 that if you're on the

00:40:26.560 left and you're talking

00:40:27.540 to anybody on the

00:40:29.120 right, and I wish I

00:40:30.440 wish I'd reversed

00:40:31.180 these on the photos

00:40:33.480 or on the graphic,

00:40:35.400 but if you're trying

00:40:37.820 to talk to them,

00:40:38.620 because the people

00:40:39.280 on the right filter

00:40:40.520 things through the

00:40:41.380 language of religion

00:40:42.620 quite often, it

00:40:45.100 doesn't sound

00:40:45.800 scientific.

00:40:47.620 So you only need

00:40:48.960 one or two senators

00:40:50.140 who are Republican

00:40:51.180 to come out and

00:40:52.080 say, well, God

00:40:53.560 will determine the

00:40:54.680 temperature of the

00:40:55.500 earth.

00:40:56.440 And then if you're

00:40:57.360 over here and you're

00:40:58.240 saying, um, what?

00:41:01.920 God will determine

00:41:03.000 the temperature of the

00:41:04.020 earth?

00:41:04.760 Okay, we're out.

00:41:05.680 We don't respect you

00:41:06.480 anymore.

00:41:07.340 You're anti-science.

00:41:09.200 So the left just

00:41:10.960 can't even have a,

00:41:12.320 doesn't even know how

00:41:13.180 to talk to this group

00:41:15.260 because they require

00:41:16.500 respect.

00:41:17.360 They're not getting

00:41:18.260 it because they're

00:41:20.080 saying, oh, you're

00:41:20.560 anti-science because

00:41:21.680 religion gets woven 0.83

00:41:23.920 into it.

00:41:24.840 Now, I've never met

00:41:25.920 a conservative who

00:41:27.380 was anti-science.

00:41:29.260 Have you?

00:41:30.380 Have you ever met

00:41:31.320 anybody who was

00:41:31.960 anti-science?

00:41:33.200 You know, somebody

00:41:33.980 who didn't believe

00:41:34.980 that if you run a

00:41:36.440 controlled experiment

00:41:37.460 and it gives you a

00:41:38.800 statistically valid

00:41:39.980 result, that that

00:41:41.280 doesn't mean anything

00:41:42.120 because what?

00:41:43.140 Because God?

00:41:43.800 God, I've never

00:41:45.060 met a conservative

00:41:45.860 who didn't think

00:41:47.300 a controlled clinical

00:41:48.460 trial wasn't a good

00:41:49.500 idea.

00:41:50.780 I've never met a

00:41:51.760 conservative who

00:41:53.020 thought that, you

00:41:54.760 know, testing things

00:41:56.580 and moving toward

00:41:57.360 truth with the

00:41:58.380 scientific method

00:41:59.240 was a bad idea.

00:42:01.060 I've never heard of

00:42:01.820 that.

00:42:02.760 But the left

00:42:03.580 thinks that's true

00:42:04.420 because of the

00:42:05.380 religious filter that

00:42:06.840 a lot of the right

00:42:08.260 uses to talk about

00:42:09.200 things.

00:42:09.480 So what do you

00:42:13.880 do about this?

00:42:15.120 Well, the first

00:42:15.940 thing you'd have to

00:42:16.440 do is recognize it,

00:42:17.780 which is that the

00:42:18.980 conservatives are

00:42:20.040 saying, well, you're

00:42:20.960 saying that we have

00:42:21.520 this institutional

00:42:22.320 racism and you're

00:42:24.800 saying that what you

00:42:25.560 want is empathy.

00:42:28.620 Well, how does

00:42:29.100 empathy fix it?

00:42:31.220 How does empathy

00:42:32.000 solve anything?

00:42:33.680 Empathy actually

00:42:34.480 makes things worse

00:42:35.660 because conservatives

00:42:37.420 are, let's say

00:42:40.980 that they have an

00:42:41.720 incentive-based view

00:42:43.340 of the world, that

00:42:45.100 capitalism creates

00:42:46.260 incentives, that's

00:42:47.300 good.

00:42:48.020 Voting and democracy

00:42:49.400 creates incentives,

00:42:50.780 that's good.

00:42:51.700 The Constitution

00:42:52.400 creates a system

00:42:53.620 where people have

00:42:54.340 incentives to act a

00:42:55.420 certain way, that's

00:42:56.620 good.

00:42:57.120 So if you've built a

00:42:58.120 system that takes

00:42:59.800 into account people's

00:43:00.960 human motivations and

00:43:02.380 how people act in the

00:43:03.400 real world, that's a

00:43:04.740 good system.

00:43:05.260 So if you've got

00:43:06.860 something you're

00:43:07.340 trying to fix,

00:43:07.980 institutional racism,

00:43:09.500 and the way you're

00:43:10.240 trying to fix a

00:43:11.040 system is with

00:43:12.800 empathy, that's just

00:43:13.780 the wrong tool.

00:43:15.920 It's the wrong tool.

00:43:17.640 If we gave you what

00:43:18.980 you asked for, you

00:43:21.580 would be worse off,

00:43:22.740 not better.

00:43:24.100 You don't believe

00:43:24.700 it?

00:43:25.120 Here's how it goes.

00:43:26.480 Give us empathy.

00:43:27.520 All right, here's

00:43:28.280 our empathy.

00:43:29.600 Now we've got the

00:43:30.740 empathy, give us

00:43:31.580 what we want.

00:43:33.340 You've got all this

00:43:34.040 empathy, give us

00:43:35.640 what we want.

00:43:36.660 Let's say you do.

00:43:38.600 Let's say it worked.

00:43:40.160 Let's say the

00:43:41.000 protests and

00:43:42.080 everything created

00:43:42.780 more empathy, and

00:43:43.700 the more empathy

00:43:44.400 caused more

00:43:45.560 resources and

00:43:46.400 attention to be

00:43:47.220 given.

00:43:47.940 What kind of

00:43:48.620 system would you

00:43:49.440 have built if

00:43:51.020 you took that

00:43:51.580 path, you

00:43:52.920 followed the

00:43:53.520 empathy, and you

00:43:54.320 acted upon it?

00:43:55.500 You would have

00:43:56.180 created a system

00:43:56.980 that guarantees the

00:43:58.460 destruction of your 0.93

00:43:59.400 country.

00:44:00.440 Because the next

00:44:02.480 group says, wait

00:44:04.020 a minute, did

00:44:04.500 that work?

00:44:05.820 Are you telling

00:44:06.280 me that worked?

00:44:07.420 What does the

00:44:07.980 next group do?

00:44:09.400 The next group

00:44:10.180 says, oh, that's

00:44:11.100 how you get

00:44:11.520 power.

00:44:12.540 You get power by

00:44:14.360 being the best

00:44:15.000 complainer, demonizing

00:44:17.800 the people that you

00:44:19.180 don't like as 0.98

00:44:20.100 racist or devils of

00:44:22.220 some kind, and so

00:44:23.900 I'll do some of

00:44:24.500 that.

00:44:25.160 If you incentivize

00:44:26.820 complaining,

00:44:29.340 complaining, that's

00:44:30.900 what this is,

00:44:31.640 asking for empathy

00:44:34.580 is pretty much

00:44:36.020 just complaining.

00:44:37.900 There's no

00:44:38.620 solution offered,

00:44:39.880 there are no

00:44:40.360 specifics, there's

00:44:41.440 no bill that's

00:44:42.160 being offered, no

00:44:43.680 nothing.

00:44:46.180 That system is

00:44:47.820 not a system.

00:44:48.960 It's a system that

00:44:50.040 can't work anywhere.

00:44:52.080 But if you could

00:44:53.280 find something that

00:44:54.120 was an actual

00:44:54.740 system, conservatives

00:44:56.340 would be all over

00:44:57.780 it.

00:44:58.020 But in order to

00:44:59.340 get to any kind

00:45:00.820 of a workable

00:45:01.960 solution or

00:45:02.980 legislation or

00:45:04.080 process or

00:45:05.440 training or

00:45:06.300 anything that's

00:45:06.900 useful whatsoever,

00:45:08.220 you have to at

00:45:09.000 least agree what

00:45:09.680 the problem is and

00:45:10.480 the way you talk

00:45:10.920 about it.

00:45:12.020 And here's what

00:45:12.840 happens when we

00:45:13.660 talk about this

00:45:14.280 stuff.

00:45:15.680 It always goes

00:45:16.560 down this funnel

00:45:18.720 and it goes like

00:45:19.660 this.

00:45:20.140 How many times

00:45:20.820 have you seen

00:45:21.180 this?

00:45:22.780 Somebody, a

00:45:23.520 conservative, might

00:45:24.300 say, hey, more

00:45:25.640 white people are 1.00

00:45:26.340 killed by police 1.00

00:45:27.200 than black 1.00

00:45:27.880 people.

00:45:29.200 Is that true?

00:45:30.500 That is true.

00:45:32.000 There are way

00:45:32.720 more white people 0.94

00:45:33.620 who are killed 0.96

00:45:34.240 by police than 1.00

00:45:35.020 black people.

00:45:36.080 So is that the 0.96

00:45:36.860 end of the

00:45:37.220 conversation?

00:45:38.060 No, no.

00:45:38.960 No, that's not

00:45:39.500 the end.

00:45:40.480 That's more like

00:45:40.980 the beginning.

00:45:42.580 Because more 0.95

00:45:44.500 black people are 1.00

00:45:45.360 killed by police 0.99

00:45:46.220 as a percentage

00:45:47.260 of their

00:45:48.020 population.

00:45:49.640 So there are

00:45:50.640 only 13%, I

00:45:52.740 think, black 0.97

00:45:53.680 citizens of the

00:45:54.900 United States,

00:45:55.600 13%.

00:45:56.480 But the police 0.71

00:45:57.820 will kill more

00:45:59.680 than their share 1.00

00:46:00.560 of the black 0.68

00:46:01.420 population compared

00:46:02.520 to the white

00:46:03.080 population because

00:46:04.140 there are so many

00:46:04.600 more white people.

00:46:05.840 So even though

00:46:06.320 the raw number,

00:46:07.580 the raw number

00:46:08.820 of white people

00:46:09.520 is higher, as a

00:46:11.160 percentage of the

00:46:11.800 population, it's

00:46:13.540 reversed.

00:46:14.860 But wait, are we

00:46:15.540 done?

00:46:16.440 No, no, we're not

00:46:17.200 done. 0.90

00:46:18.320 Because more whites 1.00

00:46:20.200 are killed as a 0.96

00:46:21.060 percentage of police

00:46:22.760 encounters.

00:46:23.600 measures.

00:46:24.500 Isn't that the

00:46:25.140 way you should

00:46:25.580 measure it?

00:46:26.440 It's not a

00:46:27.160 percentage of the

00:46:27.840 population because

00:46:29.320 most of the

00:46:29.960 population never

00:46:30.800 talks to the

00:46:31.400 police.

00:46:32.320 The police don't

00:46:33.180 stop and get

00:46:34.460 into a crime

00:46:36.260 related conversation

00:46:37.440 with most of

00:46:38.540 the public.

00:46:39.800 Most of the

00:46:40.400 public just

00:46:41.080 doesn't get in

00:46:41.720 this situation

00:46:42.280 at all.

00:46:43.560 So if you

00:46:44.120 eliminate all 0.96

00:46:44.760 the people who

00:46:45.220 don't have any

00:46:45.740 contact with the

00:46:46.540 police, at least

00:46:47.140 any meaningful

00:46:47.780 contact, I'm not

00:46:48.740 talking about a

00:46:49.420 traffic ticket,

00:46:51.080 you come to,

00:46:52.260 well, wait, there

00:46:53.260 are more

00:46:53.500 white people 0.99

00:46:55.140 who get killed 1.00

00:46:55.580 by the police

00:46:56.220 as a percentage

00:46:57.260 of police

00:46:58.180 encounters, so

00:46:59.640 we're done, right?

00:47:00.560 That's all you

00:47:01.060 need to know.

00:47:01.920 All right, let's

00:47:02.440 all go home.

00:47:03.140 Oh, no, nope,

00:47:05.180 can't go home.

00:47:06.940 Because police 0.99

00:47:08.580 stop more black 1.00

00:47:09.380 people. 1.00

00:47:11.060 It doesn't

00:47:11.940 matter if the

00:47:13.260 percentage of

00:47:15.220 white people who

00:47:16.080 get killed is 1.00

00:47:17.640 higher as a

00:47:19.340 percentage of

00:47:19.920 stops.

00:47:20.360 if they're

00:47:21.360 only stopping

00:47:22.120 one white

00:47:23.060 person for

00:47:23.640 every ten

00:47:24.180 black people, 0.99

00:47:25.320 you're still 0.99

00:47:25.940 going to have

00:47:26.280 way more

00:47:26.860 problems of

00:47:28.340 the police 0.99

00:47:28.680 killing black 1.00

00:47:29.200 people because 1.00

00:47:29.680 they've just

00:47:30.760 encountered more

00:47:31.600 of them.

00:47:32.620 So that's the

00:47:33.200 end of the

00:47:33.560 story, right?

00:47:34.160 It's racism.

00:47:35.500 Well, no, it's

00:47:36.520 not the end of

00:47:36.960 the story.

00:47:37.880 Because why do

00:47:38.860 police stop more 0.98

00:47:40.120 black people? 0.99

00:47:41.680 What's up with 0.99

00:47:42.260 that?

00:47:44.160 Because I would

00:47:45.000 imagine that even 0.99

00:47:45.860 black police 0.98

00:47:47.160 officers, of 0.85

00:47:47.920 which I heard

00:47:49.200 today there

00:47:49.720 are 20% of

00:47:50.760 police officers 0.80

00:47:51.460 are black. 0.98

00:47:53.000 Now, 13% of

00:47:55.460 the population

00:47:56.200 is black, but

00:47:57.660 20% of police

00:47:58.860 officers are 0.94

00:47:59.500 black. 0.74

00:48:00.220 So at least

00:48:00.760 within the

00:48:01.420 police hiring

00:48:02.660 situation, you

00:48:05.580 got plenty of

00:48:07.220 I mean, that

00:48:08.220 situation looks

00:48:08.860 good, at least

00:48:09.340 by the numbers.

00:48:10.480 But why do

00:48:11.220 police stop more 0.90

00:48:12.440 black citizens? 0.99

00:48:14.640 Well, I would 0.96

00:48:15.400 call it the

00:48:15.820 Willie Sutton

00:48:16.620 problem.

00:48:17.080 Willie Sutton

00:48:18.360 was a famous

00:48:19.020 bank robber who

00:48:20.820 allegedly said,

00:48:22.260 and I don't

00:48:22.700 think he really

00:48:23.340 said this, you

00:48:24.060 know how quotes

00:48:24.820 get manufactured

00:48:25.680 after the fact.

00:48:26.840 So he didn't

00:48:27.280 really say this,

00:48:28.100 but it's

00:48:28.360 attributed to him.

00:48:29.640 And he was

00:48:30.080 asked, why does

00:48:30.920 he rob banks?

00:48:32.080 Because he was

00:48:32.580 a famous bank

00:48:33.340 robber.

00:48:34.280 And when asked,

00:48:35.280 why does he

00:48:35.920 rob banks?

00:48:36.900 He says, that's

00:48:38.680 where the money

00:48:39.140 is.

00:48:41.780 What are you

00:48:42.360 going to rob?

00:48:42.980 You're going to

00:48:43.320 rob something with

00:48:43.980 money, and banks

00:48:45.180 have the money, so

00:48:46.240 he robs banks.

00:48:48.380 Where are the

00:48:49.180 police supposed

00:48:50.080 to go to do

00:48:51.940 police work?

00:48:53.740 Don't they go

00:48:54.380 where there's

00:48:54.740 more crime?

00:48:55.940 Wouldn't you

00:48:56.380 expect?

00:48:57.300 Wouldn't you

00:48:57.800 expect that you

00:48:58.560 would send more

00:48:59.200 police into a

00:49:00.100 high-crime

00:49:00.600 neighborhood?

00:49:01.580 If it's a 0.59

00:49:02.700 high-crime

00:49:03.160 neighborhood, and

00:49:04.420 you could just

00:49:04.880 say because of

00:49:05.800 poverty, because of

00:49:06.920 economics, etc., you

00:49:08.400 don't even have to

00:49:09.020 bring race into

00:49:09.680 this.

00:49:10.400 The police will

00:49:11.180 always go to the

00:49:12.140 high-crime

00:49:12.600 neighborhood and

00:49:13.860 stop more people

00:49:14.820 in a high-crime

00:49:15.600 neighborhood.

00:49:16.580 So what do you

00:49:17.060 do about that?

00:49:18.760 What do you do

00:49:19.160 about that?

00:49:20.240 And then here's

00:49:21.420 where the trail

00:49:22.160 goes cold.

00:49:23.940 So if you

00:49:24.600 watched my

00:49:25.040 conversation with

00:49:26.260 Hotep Jesus 0.82

00:49:27.560 yesterday, I

00:49:28.880 asked him this

00:49:29.540 question, and I

00:49:30.240 said, I can't

00:49:31.800 talk to this

00:49:33.240 question, but you

00:49:34.780 can, because

00:49:35.880 there's some

00:49:36.300 things that you

00:49:37.640 can say in this

00:49:38.740 world of ours that

00:49:39.720 I just can't.

00:49:41.080 And I said to

00:49:41.960 Hotep, would

00:49:43.520 you say, in

00:49:44.260 your opinion,

00:49:45.220 that the

00:49:45.800 different cultures

00:49:46.740 and ethnicities

00:49:47.740 respond to

00:49:49.440 police the

00:49:50.800 same way?

00:49:52.180 And he

00:49:52.780 laughed, and

00:49:53.440 he said no,

00:49:54.360 basically.

00:49:55.480 And in his

00:49:56.840 experience, young

00:49:58.740 black men can 0.60

00:50:00.140 be a little bit 0.89

00:50:00.780 more, let's

00:50:01.740 say, display

00:50:04.100 some attitude

00:50:04.940 or a little

00:50:06.400 bit more

00:50:07.580 resistance than

00:50:08.820 maybe some

00:50:09.340 other group

00:50:09.860 would.

00:50:10.060 Now, if I

00:50:11.260 said that, which

00:50:13.000 I wouldn't, I

00:50:14.800 get cancelled

00:50:15.440 immediately.

00:50:16.420 So how do I

00:50:17.180 get in the

00:50:17.500 conversation?

00:50:18.800 I can't even

00:50:19.360 have this

00:50:19.720 conversation,

00:50:20.400 right, without

00:50:21.540 getting cancelled.

00:50:22.620 And it seems

00:50:23.840 to be really

00:50:24.980 the key to

00:50:26.520 unlocking all

00:50:27.480 of these

00:50:27.840 statistics that

00:50:28.880 people who are

00:50:29.520 bad at math

00:50:30.260 get trapped

00:50:31.340 by, because

00:50:32.280 most people

00:50:32.740 just stop at

00:50:33.380 one of these

00:50:33.780 boxes and

00:50:34.900 say, oh,

00:50:35.520 well, there

00:50:35.900 it is, that's

00:50:36.640 the end of the

00:50:37.080 story, this

00:50:37.520 one box.

00:50:38.500 But you

00:50:38.900 really have to

00:50:39.500 work through

00:50:40.000 all the

00:50:40.540 boxes and

00:50:41.300 all the

00:50:41.640 percentages, and

00:50:42.940 it's always

00:50:43.340 going to come

00:50:43.780 back to this

00:50:44.540 with a

00:50:45.580 question mark.

00:50:46.820 Is there

00:50:47.180 something different

00:50:48.060 that's happening

00:50:49.560 at these

00:50:50.200 stops?

00:50:51.380 Now, would

00:50:52.820 you expect

00:50:53.400 that it would

00:50:53.900 be true that

00:50:54.820 young black 0.69

00:50:55.360 men resist 0.97

00:50:56.220 more, which

00:50:57.280 would be a

00:50:57.720 racist statement

00:50:58.500 that I'm not

00:50:59.300 making?

00:51:00.500 So I'm not

00:51:01.300 making that

00:51:01.780 claim.

00:51:02.680 But I'll

00:51:03.280 make the

00:51:03.620 following claim.

00:51:05.160 If I lived

00:51:06.180 in any place

00:51:07.180 where I

00:51:08.260 thought the

00:51:08.700 police were

00:51:09.260 more likely

00:51:09.860 to stop

00:51:10.660 me and

00:51:11.040 hassle me 1.00

00:51:11.540 and kill 1.00

00:51:11.840 me, so 1.00

00:51:12.820 in other

00:51:13.100 words, if

00:51:13.540 I believed

00:51:14.240 that the

00:51:15.240 police were

00:51:15.820 oppressing

00:51:16.340 me, how

00:51:18.080 would I

00:51:18.440 respond when

00:51:19.920 they stopped

00:51:20.740 me for

00:51:21.080 something I

00:51:21.600 thought was

00:51:22.180 an illegitimate

00:51:23.560 stop?

00:51:24.340 What would

00:51:24.900 be my

00:51:25.440 attitude as

00:51:26.940 a young

00:51:27.440 white,

00:51:28.540 white man?

00:51:31.420 Let's say

00:51:31.880 I'm 23,

00:51:33.200 and it's

00:51:33.660 me.

00:51:34.120 It's literally

00:51:34.700 me at

00:51:35.120 23.

00:51:36.120 I'm a

00:51:36.460 young

00:51:36.740 white man,

00:51:38.180 and I've

00:51:38.780 come to

00:51:39.220 believe that

00:51:40.300 in my

00:51:40.700 town, young

00:51:41.480 white men

00:51:42.080 are stopped

00:51:42.680 by the

00:51:43.120 police more

00:51:43.680 often.

00:51:44.740 Doesn't

00:51:45.140 mean it's

00:51:45.480 true, doesn't

00:51:47.160 mean there's

00:51:47.520 not a reason

00:51:48.080 for it, there's

00:51:48.720 a lot of

00:51:48.980 crime there.

00:51:50.220 It doesn't

00:51:51.480 matter the

00:51:51.860 facts of

00:51:52.300 it.

00:51:52.740 It's in

00:51:53.080 my head,

00:51:54.400 true or

00:51:55.940 not, that

00:51:57.260 I'm being

00:51:57.660 victimized by

00:51:58.480 the police.

00:51:59.140 Now the

00:51:59.400 police pulled

00:51:59.860 me over, and

00:52:00.420 I was just

00:52:00.840 minding my

00:52:01.360 own business.

00:52:02.320 What's my

00:52:02.800 attitude?

00:52:03.200 I'm

00:52:04.400 young, I'm

00:52:05.880 male, 23

00:52:07.640 years old, I

00:52:09.180 think I'm

00:52:09.620 abused by the

00:52:10.400 police, I'm

00:52:11.520 stopped for

00:52:12.040 nothing, and

00:52:13.920 I'm a white

00:52:14.560 guy, so it

00:52:15.320 has nothing to

00:52:15.780 do with race.

00:52:16.680 What's my

00:52:17.200 attitude?

00:52:18.460 What's my

00:52:18.880 attitude?

00:52:20.400 A little bit

00:52:21.200 aggressive.

00:52:22.600 It's a little

00:52:23.400 bit aggressive.

00:52:24.840 I would

00:52:25.600 probably step

00:52:26.480 toward the

00:52:27.200 cop.

00:52:28.200 I might even

00:52:28.840 close the

00:52:29.400 distance, because

00:52:30.500 I want that

00:52:31.040 cop to know I'm

00:52:31.840 not afraid of

00:52:32.460 him.

00:52:32.600 I want that

00:52:33.620 cop to know

00:52:34.220 he's not

00:52:34.580 going to get

00:52:35.000 over on

00:52:35.440 me.

00:52:35.960 I want that

00:52:36.600 cop to know

00:52:37.160 he can arrest

00:52:38.180 me, he can

00:52:38.660 put me in

00:52:39.060 handcuffs, but

00:52:39.640 he's not

00:52:40.080 going to

00:52:40.280 break my

00:52:40.740 spirit, because

00:52:42.300 I'm not

00:52:43.040 going to let

00:52:43.380 these cops

00:52:44.040 walk all

00:52:44.540 over me and

00:52:45.040 my territory.

00:52:45.880 I'm not

00:52:46.300 going to let

00:52:46.620 them discriminate 0.96

00:52:47.220 against me for

00:52:48.420 being young or

00:52:49.380 whatever.

00:52:50.780 So I don't

00:52:53.000 see any way to

00:52:53.900 fix this, because

00:52:55.820 you could

00:52:56.400 substitute black 1.00

00:52:58.000 people for 1.00

00:52:59.200 poor people, and

00:53:00.200 wouldn't you get

00:53:00.780 exactly the same

00:53:01.680 outcome?

00:53:02.820 It's almost like

00:53:03.740 the race

00:53:04.240 disappeared.

00:53:06.460 If you work it

00:53:07.340 all the way down

00:53:07.940 to the end, it's

00:53:09.300 the simple fact

00:53:10.100 that there's more

00:53:10.840 police activity in

00:53:12.100 high-crime

00:53:12.680 neighborhoods that

00:53:14.100 largely guarantees

00:53:15.320 the people in that

00:53:16.280 neighborhood will

00:53:16.900 feel oppressed.

00:53:17.600 oppressed.

00:53:18.840 Now, it doesn't

00:53:19.780 matter if they

00:53:20.280 are or are

00:53:21.140 not, wouldn't

00:53:22.340 you feel oppressed

00:53:23.240 if the police

00:53:24.780 were just always

00:53:25.340 beating up people

00:53:26.100 who look like 0.93

00:53:26.680 you and not

00:53:28.100 beating up people

00:53:28.820 who look like

00:53:29.300 something else, and

00:53:30.740 the news stories

00:53:31.480 that you hear are

00:53:32.500 only the people

00:53:33.180 like you getting 0.98

00:53:34.020 abused by the

00:53:35.220 police.

00:53:35.900 How many news

00:53:36.960 stories have you

00:53:37.780 heard this week of

00:53:39.320 white people being 0.99

00:53:40.200 abused by the 0.92

00:53:40.940 police?

00:53:41.260 The only one I

00:53:42.680 know of is that

00:53:43.780 75-year-old white

00:53:45.000 guy who got

00:53:45.640 pushed down in

00:53:46.520 Buffalo, and the

00:53:47.820 only reason you

00:53:48.780 know that is that

00:53:50.160 the context was a

00:53:51.300 Black Lives Matter

00:53:52.540 protest.

00:53:53.680 If it had been any

00:53:54.840 other context,

00:53:56.040 nobody would have

00:53:57.000 cared, right?

00:53:58.260 Nobody would have

00:53:59.080 even noticed.

00:53:59.760 It wouldn't be news.

00:54:00.680 Certainly it

00:54:01.160 wouldn't be news.

00:54:01.800 So you have

00:54:03.820 this unsolvable

00:54:04.780 problem that is

00:54:06.900 the nature of it

00:54:07.720 that you could

00:54:08.260 remove race

00:54:09.920 entirely, and it

00:54:10.760 would look exactly

00:54:11.540 the same.

00:54:13.200 It would look

00:54:13.640 exactly the same.

00:54:15.080 Because there's

00:54:15.760 more police activity,

00:54:16.960 you're just naturally

00:54:17.620 going to think

00:54:18.040 they're on you,

00:54:18.840 you're going to

00:54:19.180 act a certain

00:54:19.680 way.

00:54:20.760 And now, how

00:54:22.040 would you solve

00:54:22.860 something like

00:54:24.360 this?

00:54:25.500 The way you

00:54:26.080 would solve it

00:54:26.720 is to be able

00:54:27.480 to talk about

00:54:28.180 it honestly.

00:54:29.800 To be able to

00:54:30.500 say, look,

00:54:31.060 everything's on

00:54:32.880 the table,

00:54:33.960 there's no

00:54:34.420 cancelling of

00:54:35.080 anybody, let's

00:54:35.760 just talk about

00:54:36.460 it honestly.

00:54:37.860 But you can't,

00:54:39.300 because that's

00:54:39.860 the other rule.

00:54:41.200 You're not allowed

00:54:41.960 to talk about it

00:54:42.760 honestly.

00:54:43.560 You just can't.

00:54:44.940 You'll get

00:54:45.420 cancelled.

00:54:46.100 Just like the

00:54:47.080 editor of the

00:54:49.320 Philadelphia

00:54:49.840 Inquirer who

00:54:51.180 got cancelled

00:54:52.060 for simply

00:54:52.680 having a

00:54:53.520 non-standard

00:54:54.240 opinion.

00:54:55.520 And so I

00:54:56.100 say to you,

00:54:57.600 as long as

00:54:58.620 this institutional

00:55:00.020 racism

00:55:00.600 is an

00:55:01.620 undefined

00:55:02.260 concept with

00:55:03.100 no specific

00:55:03.880 activities

00:55:04.920 requested,

00:55:07.000 as long as

00:55:07.900 I, as a

00:55:08.700 white person

00:55:09.300 in America,

00:55:10.020 am not

00:55:10.600 allowed to

00:55:10.960 even discuss

00:55:11.760 the topic,

00:55:13.260 not even

00:55:13.900 allowed to

00:55:14.380 talk about

00:55:14.820 it.

00:55:15.760 How the 0.99

00:55:16.420 fuck am I 0.99

00:55:16.940 going to 1.00

00:55:17.140 help,

00:55:17.980 really?

00:55:18.800 So I'm

00:55:19.380 on strike

00:55:19.980 for being

00:55:21.740 helpful,

00:55:22.540 as long as

00:55:24.480 there's no

00:55:24.820 specific suggestion

00:55:25.840 and I'm not

00:55:26.620 allowed to

00:55:27.000 talk about

00:55:27.480 it and

00:55:28.560 people won't

00:55:29.060 take yes

00:55:29.480 for an

00:55:29.740 answer.

00:55:30.720 If you

00:55:31.220 won't

00:55:31.380 take yes

00:55:31.760 for an

00:55:32.020 answer,

00:55:32.400 I can't

00:55:32.780 talk about

00:55:33.240 it and

00:55:33.520 you don't

00:55:33.740 have any

00:55:34.100 suggestions

00:55:34.540 to even

00:55:34.940 talk about,

00:55:36.460 I'm on

00:55:36.900 strike.

00:55:37.820 I can't

00:55:38.240 help you.

00:55:39.280 And I

00:55:40.700 feel sorry

00:55:41.200 for people

00:55:41.720 who's,

00:55:42.260 anybody who's

00:55:42.920 getting hurt

00:55:43.840 or their

00:55:44.240 property is

00:55:44.800 being destroyed

00:55:46.320 or any of

00:55:47.060 that.

00:55:47.420 But I would

00:55:47.960 say the

00:55:48.300 leadership of

00:55:49.220 the black

00:55:49.740 community has 0.99

00:55:51.600 failed you as

00:55:52.520 hard as

00:55:53.200 anything has

00:55:53.860 ever failed,

00:55:54.620 anything ever

00:55:55.440 in the history

00:55:56.100 of failures.

00:55:57.500 And it's

00:55:57.860 a tragedy

00:56:00.120 because it

00:56:01.200 wouldn't take

00:56:01.720 much in

00:56:03.220 terms of

00:56:03.900 good leadership

00:56:05.080 to produce

00:56:05.900 some kind

00:56:06.360 of a better

00:56:06.900 outcome.

00:56:08.080 But there

00:56:08.240 doesn't seem

00:56:08.800 to be any,

00:56:10.800 in fact,

00:56:11.300 I don't even

00:56:11.620 know who the

00:56:12.040 leader is,

00:56:12.540 right?

00:56:13.340 Do you even

00:56:13.940 know who the

00:56:14.380 leader of

00:56:14.720 Black Lives

00:56:15.180 Matter is?

00:56:17.900 Or is there

00:56:18.600 even one?

00:56:19.560 Is there one

00:56:20.140 leader?

00:56:20.700 I don't even

00:56:21.140 know.

00:56:21.560 Do you?

00:56:21.820 As long

00:56:23.960 as this has

00:56:24.440 been going

00:56:24.860 on, can

00:56:26.000 you conjure

00:56:27.320 up in your

00:56:27.720 mind the

00:56:29.320 face or the

00:56:30.540 name of a

00:56:31.120 leader of

00:56:31.660 any of it?

00:56:32.580 I mean, we've

00:56:33.000 seen people who

00:56:33.640 are leaderish

00:56:34.620 locally, but

00:56:36.620 until there's

00:56:38.060 somebody who's

00:56:38.760 sort of a

00:56:39.280 leader who can

00:56:40.100 speak for the

00:56:40.760 group and is

00:56:41.400 credible, there's

00:56:42.580 also nobody to

00:56:43.560 negotiate with.

00:56:45.080 There's nobody

00:56:45.880 who could give

00:56:46.660 you a suggestion

00:56:47.380 that you could

00:56:47.920 deal with it

00:56:48.520 because it's a

00:56:50.480 group of people

00:56:51.080 who don't have

00:56:51.600 a common

00:56:52.000 goal.

00:56:52.820 If the people

00:56:53.700 marching had a

00:56:54.540 common goal with

00:56:55.900 specifics, they do

00:56:57.480 have a common

00:56:58.060 goal of ending

00:57:00.300 racism, so that

00:57:01.860 part is common,

00:57:02.880 but until they

00:57:03.520 have a common

00:57:04.120 formula for how

00:57:07.580 to do it, it's

00:57:08.920 just a bunch of

00:57:09.620 angry people.

00:57:10.460 There's nothing

00:57:10.860 you can do with

00:57:11.500 that.

00:57:13.580 I'm seeing

00:57:14.260 somebody say in

00:57:14.780 the comments that

00:57:15.780 the fatherless

00:57:17.280 situation is the

00:57:19.000 cause of it,

00:57:19.560 and I don't

00:57:21.860 think that's

00:57:22.240 true.

00:57:23.320 Let me just put

00:57:24.100 that out there.

00:57:24.620 It's the most

00:57:25.020 common thing that

00:57:25.920 conservatives say

00:57:27.740 and I don't

00:57:31.480 think it's true.

00:57:33.420 I think that

00:57:34.160 that's one of

00:57:35.160 just a lot of

00:57:36.000 variables.

00:57:36.920 It's a big one.

00:57:38.100 I would say that

00:57:39.120 the cohesiveness of

00:57:42.640 the parental unit is

00:57:43.860 a big variable, but

00:57:45.340 it's just a lot of

00:57:46.360 other stuff that

00:57:48.120 really matters, a

00:57:49.060 lot in the

00:57:49.420 individual, a lot

00:57:50.340 in the situation,

00:57:51.260 et cetera.

00:57:53.680 I haven't heard of

00:57:54.800 Hogg Newsome since

00:57:55.760 any of this started,

00:57:56.900 so I don't know if

00:57:57.440 he's still active or

00:57:59.200 he's just not doing

00:58:00.940 stuff that's making

00:58:01.920 getting attention.

00:58:03.740 Has anybody heard

00:58:04.540 of Hogg Newsome

00:58:05.700 being active in

00:58:07.560 this?

00:58:08.580 I haven't seen

00:58:09.040 anything.

00:58:11.340 DeRay McKesson,

00:58:12.500 I've not seen

00:58:14.280 him speaking in

00:58:17.020 public, haven't seen

00:58:18.220 him on TV.

00:58:19.720 I don't know if he

00:58:20.360 wants to or

00:58:21.160 whatever.

00:58:22.120 So is DeRay still

00:58:24.500 involved?

00:58:26.060 Because there's this

00:58:27.320 weird leadership

00:58:28.300 vacuum where you'd

00:58:30.640 expect that whoever

00:58:31.540 was the leader

00:58:35.080 would be on TV

00:58:36.640 every day.

00:58:38.820 Because that's the

00:58:39.680 whole point, right?

00:58:40.600 Is to communicate.

00:58:42.500 It's to get the

00:58:44.120 message out.

00:58:45.540 So I don't know if

00:58:46.360 he's being locked

00:58:48.360 out.

00:58:49.180 Is it possible that

00:58:50.200 the major news

00:58:51.900 networks are

00:58:52.880 freezing him out

00:58:54.440 from coverage?

00:58:55.520 Is that possible?

00:58:56.500 Because why

00:58:56.920 wouldn't they be at

00:58:58.460 his house or

00:58:59.940 putting a microphone

00:59:00.740 in his face every

00:59:02.000 ten minutes for the

00:59:03.840 last two weeks?

00:59:05.300 It seems like that

00:59:06.120 would be the obvious

00:59:06.860 thing to do.

00:59:08.360 So there's something

00:59:09.480 going on leadership

00:59:10.580 wise.

00:59:11.060 And I'm not sure

00:59:11.600 that Black Lives

00:59:12.360 Matter has a 0.83

00:59:13.040 formal leadership

00:59:15.040 because I don't

00:59:16.040 know if all the

00:59:16.660 groups, do they

00:59:18.180 all get together

00:59:18.800 and vote in some

00:59:19.920 way?

00:59:20.260 I don't know how

00:59:20.740 that works.

00:59:22.120 All right.

00:59:26.160 Start with fathers 0.91

00:59:27.180 and move up the

00:59:28.060 list.

00:59:28.640 Yeah, I just don't

00:59:29.400 think so.

00:59:30.240 I think it starts

00:59:31.060 with strategy.

00:59:32.260 I believe it starts

00:59:34.640 with strategy and

00:59:36.200 that if you ignore

00:59:38.620 that for other

00:59:39.620 factors, you're just

00:59:40.540 going to go down

00:59:41.020 the wrong trail.

00:59:43.220 And when I say

00:59:43.720 strategy, I'll just

00:59:44.680 repeat the fast

00:59:46.060 version of what I

00:59:46.680 said before in

00:59:48.840 other periscopes,

00:59:49.960 that if you find a

00:59:52.300 way around racism,

00:59:53.900 that's your smarter

00:59:54.800 play.

00:59:55.700 Because trying to

00:59:56.840 make it go away

00:59:57.760 is just not

00:59:58.640 possible.

00:59:59.160 because the

01:00:00.920 very next baby

01:00:01.680 who's born tomorrow

01:00:02.620 is going to have

01:00:03.640 pattern recognition

01:00:04.620 as part of a

01:00:05.800 natural part of

01:00:06.480 its brain.

01:00:07.540 And that pattern

01:00:08.100 recognition is not

01:00:08.940 very good.

01:00:10.200 It sees patterns

01:00:11.020 that aren't real.

01:00:12.300 And that's what

01:00:13.200 gives you bias.

01:00:14.540 So you can't get

01:00:15.660 rid of the fact

01:00:16.460 that the brain is

01:00:17.560 a bias-generating

01:00:19.120 machine because it

01:00:20.320 always makes

01:00:20.860 decisions all day

01:00:21.800 long without the

01:00:23.540 benefit of a

01:00:24.320 clinical scientific

01:00:25.420 trial.

01:00:26.500 It just says,

01:00:27.400 well, it worked

01:00:27.820 last time, we'll

01:00:28.420 try it again.

01:00:29.160 That's pretty much

01:00:29.780 your whole brain

01:00:30.360 right there.

01:00:31.260 It worked three

01:00:31.920 times.

01:00:32.500 The last three

01:00:33.240 times I tried

01:00:33.840 it, I'll try it

01:00:34.840 again.

01:00:35.460 It's a pattern.

01:00:37.680 So as long as

01:00:39.260 that's the truth,

01:00:40.040 the best you can

01:00:40.840 do is find a

01:00:41.500 strategy that

01:00:42.180 makes it not

01:00:42.700 matter.

01:00:43.580 Just as you

01:00:44.380 can't stop the

01:00:45.140 rain, but you

01:00:46.440 can find a

01:00:47.020 strategy for

01:00:47.740 getting out of

01:00:48.160 the rain.

01:00:49.260 Build a roof,

01:00:49.940 get an umbrella.

01:00:50.820 All right.

01:00:51.260 So that's what I

01:00:51.840 got to say for

01:00:52.460 today.

01:00:55.760 There's an

01:00:56.280 interview on

01:00:56.740 Vice TV today

01:00:58.180 with whom

01:01:00.560 I'm guessing

01:01:01.300 with the

01:01:02.900 Black Lives

01:01:03.360 Matter leader.

01:01:05.400 All right.

01:01:06.440 I hope you

01:01:07.140 enjoyed this one

01:01:07.880 and I will

01:01:09.100 talk to you

01:01:09.860 soon.

01:01:12.580 Have a happy

01:01:13.640 week.

01:01:18.200 Bye.

01:01:27.120 Bye.

01:01:31.480 Bye.

01:01:37.020 Bye.
