Rebel News Podcast - A week after New Zealand shootings, Canada lurches towards internet censorship

00:00:00.000 Hey folks, today I go into some depth on the New Zealand mass shooting.

00:00:04.980 Last week when it happened, I was actually flying home from the United Kingdom.

00:00:08.720 I didn't have a chance to get into it that day, plus the facts were still evolving.

00:00:13.180 I finally have a chance to weigh in on it.

00:00:15.180 I wonder what you think.

00:00:16.480 Let me know.

00:00:17.640 Without further ado, let me give you that podcast, but give me just one second first

00:00:21.960 to invite you to become a Rebel Media Premium subscriber.

00:00:26.060 You just go to the rebel.media slash shows.

00:00:28.700 It's eight bucks a month now.

00:00:29.820 And why would you do that?

00:00:30.640 Because this podcast is free.

00:00:31.900 Well, hopefully because you like what we're doing and you want to support us because we

00:00:35.060 do have expenses.

00:00:36.340 It's eight bucks a month and you can get our video version, which I think is important,

00:00:40.940 especially in a story like this.

00:00:42.600 So please do me a favor.

00:00:43.660 Go to the rebel.media slash shows and become a premium subscriber.

00:00:47.700 Without any further ado, here is my podcast today.

00:00:51.200 You're listening to a Rebel Media podcast.

00:00:53.620 Tonight, a week after the New Zealand shootings, Canada lurches towards internet censorship.

00:01:00.500 It's March 22nd and you're watching the Ezra LeVant Show.

00:01:03.600 Why should others go to jail when you're a biggest carbon consumer I know?

00:01:09.440 There's 8,500 customers here and you won't give them an answer.

00:01:13.520 The only thing I have to say to the government about why I publish it is because it's my bloody

00:01:18.380 right to do so.

00:01:19.380 A week ago, a mass murderer in the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, walked into a mosque

00:01:30.880 shooting everyone he saw, men, women, and children.

00:01:34.220 He then drove, he left that mosque and drove to the other mosque in town and did the same 0.98

00:01:40.280 thing.

00:01:40.680 The whole thing took 21 minutes, but he managed to murder 50 people and wound 50 more.

00:01:46.340 The murderer, an Australian named Brenton Tarrant, was arrested.

00:01:51.840 At first, there were media reports that it was a team of people, almost like a terrorist

00:01:56.100 cell.

00:01:56.980 Police basically locked down the whole city, in fact, put the whole country on alert.

00:02:00.920 But after arresting other people, they released them.

00:02:03.720 Turns out that Tarrant did the whole thing by himself.

00:02:07.580 Tarrant live streamed his murder spree on Facebook.

00:02:11.100 I have not seen it, partly because others who have say it was horrific.

00:02:16.160 And warned against watching it.

00:02:17.920 I don't think I need to see a real murder.

00:02:20.240 All of us have seen countless murders before.

00:02:23.000 Anyone who's watched TV or the movies has probably seen more murder in our lives than

00:02:28.520 our entire family history going back a thousand years combined.

00:02:32.120 And then there's shoot them up video games.

00:02:33.780 But although those surely desensitize us, we still know they're fake murders.

00:02:39.820 I think the first time I saw an actual murder was when ISIS burned a Jordanian pilot alive

00:02:48.400 after capturing him a few years ago.

00:02:52.160 It was horrible.

00:02:53.380 I've seen far worse from Hollywood, obviously.

00:02:56.780 But knowing that that Jordanian pilot was real and he really was being buried alive, that

00:03:01.960 stained my mind forever.

00:03:04.340 I made the mistake of watching one more ISIS murder video, so I have declined to watch any

00:03:09.180 more.

00:03:10.800 It is not illegal to watch videos of murders.

00:03:14.860 It is obviously illegal to commit a murder.

00:03:17.320 In some jurisdictions, a murder video may be deemed to be obscene, as extreme pornography

00:03:23.700 can be.

00:03:24.780 I say all this because immediately the government of New Zealand banned that live stream video

00:03:29.980 and banned anyone from posting the video or retweeting it or anything like that.

00:03:35.180 I should say that only about 200 people apparently watched the video in real time.

00:03:39.360 Brenton Tarrant was not a well-known figure.

00:03:41.660 But you can imagine the natural curiosity, people wanting to know the news, especially something

00:03:46.340 so shocking and something so political.

00:03:48.500 I do not want to watch the video, but nor do I think that censoring the evidence of these

00:03:54.800 murders is a good idea. 1.00

00:03:55.820 It will lead to paranoia and disinformation and conspiracy theories.

00:04:01.460 Two years ago, a gunman holed up in a hotel in Las Vegas, began shooting at the crowd below.

00:04:06.920 It was a rock concert below.

00:04:08.660 He murdered 58 people and he wounded more than 800.

00:04:14.060 Now, no closed circuit TV footage has been released of the criminal in a town, Las Vegas,

00:04:19.520 that probably has more closed circuit TV cameras per square foot than anywhere else in the world.

00:04:25.820 Police still say they have no motive.

00:04:28.580 Really?

00:04:29.740 Or the case of Omar Mateen. 0.98

00:04:31.520 That's the Muslim terrorist who murdered 49 and wounded 58 more in a gay nightclub in 0.97

00:04:37.580 Florida a couple of years ago.

00:04:38.760 At first, authorities released only a partial transcript of the terrorists' calls.

00:04:44.060 Remember, he called authorities.

00:04:45.820 They omitted his mention of ISIS.

00:04:47.520 And they claimed they actually wrote that he said, praise be to God, instead of what he

00:04:53.500 actually said, Allah Akbar.

00:04:55.380 They edited his calls.

00:04:58.120 So do you see my point?

00:04:58.980 I don't believe people should watch snuff films.

00:05:01.660 I don't want to.

00:05:02.900 I've seen two in my life.

00:05:04.000 That's two, too many.

00:05:04.920 But by banning them, especially something so politically charged, it plants seeds of doubt

00:05:11.040 and mistrust.

00:05:12.220 Are you not skeptical of the Las Vegas shooting?

00:05:15.420 I am.

00:05:15.920 And that's not a conspiracy theory.

00:05:17.760 That's just saying, where's the facts?

00:05:20.600 New Zealand put an enormous effort into deleting the facts, into deleting the video.

00:05:26.080 They pressured YouTube and Facebook and other websites into their service.

00:05:30.720 Now, YouTube and Facebook, they say that more than a million and a half people tried that

00:05:36.260 day to share the images of the murders.

00:05:40.140 Surely not all 1.5 million of them are vicious monsters.

00:05:44.180 I think a lot of them were actually the opposite.

00:05:47.000 People who were scared, who wanted to understand the vicious monster who was there.

00:05:52.860 But in fact, merely possessing the video is a crime punishable by 10 years in prison in

00:05:58.980 New Zealand now and sharing it.

00:06:01.140 Well, that makes you a dealer.

00:06:02.400 That's 14 years in prison.

00:06:05.860 And they're actually prosecuting people for this, by the way.

00:06:09.340 But the prosecutions are the least of it.

00:06:11.100 Like I say, literally, millions of people want the news.

00:06:14.940 Look at this on Twitter.

00:06:15.920 Nick Monroe tweeted a fact.

00:06:18.260 It's just a fact that an Islamic terrorist threatened the prime minister of New Zealand,

00:06:23.440 Jacinda Erdern, in retribution. 0.51

00:06:25.860 Twitter made him delete that news.

00:06:27.900 Why? Why would they make him delete the news?

00:06:29.740 It wasn't fake news.

00:06:31.340 It might be upsetting news, but why force them to delete it?

00:06:36.220 And why was Twitter doing a government's errands for them, censorship errands?

00:06:40.840 This wasn't even the obscene footage, was it?

00:06:43.900 Here's a warning from New Zealand's police on Twitter.

00:06:46.900 They say,

00:06:47.240 Here's a copy of another email also obtained by Nick Monroe from the New Zealand police

00:07:01.140 to an internet company demanding to know the names of anyone who downloaded a copy of

00:07:06.800 The Killer's Manifesto.

00:07:10.020 Hang on.

00:07:10.700 So is this to block an obscene video or to block all information?

00:07:16.060 What's going on?

00:07:16.840 Now, before I go any further, let me state the obvious.

00:07:19.560 I don't do this for any normal people who are watching, but rather for bad faith critics.

00:07:24.820 Obviously, I disagree with and condemn this mass murderer who did his murders in the name

00:07:29.880 of a political goal.

00:07:30.800 That's terrorism.

00:07:31.460 I say that because to the left and to liberals and to the self-appointed censors of the media,

00:07:36.140 that's really what this moment was about.

00:07:38.060 It was a moment to weaponize the 50 dead bodies and fire them at conservatives.

00:07:43.140 Andrew Scheer, the conservative leader in Canada, put out a tweet of condolences and sympathy and

00:07:47.680 solidarity very quickly.

00:07:49.100 Look at it.

00:07:50.280 He later put out a longer statement that mentioned Muslims and mosques.

00:07:53.940 But the fact that Scheer did not do so immediately, that he did not name check Muslims and mosques,

00:08:00.000 was evidence to much of the Canadian media that Andrew Scheer himself was an Islamophobe who

00:08:07.140 probably agreed with the murderer.

00:08:09.780 That's the argument made by half a dozen Canadian media, including Andrew Coyne of the once sane

00:08:15.480 National Post.

00:08:16.680 It was nuts.

00:08:18.240 I should point out that Andrew Scheer's language in his first tweet was remarkably similar to

00:08:22.600 that of our governor general and to that of the queen herself.

00:08:26.960 But so what?

00:08:27.440 It was an opportunity to name and shame and blame Andrew Scheer for a mass murder on the

00:08:32.500 other side of the world, the murderer who has surely never heard of Andrew Scheer.

00:08:36.580 So here in Canada, Andrew Scheer was blamed.

00:08:39.660 In America, obviously, Trump was blamed.

00:08:42.320 It was whatever the left needed to do.

00:08:44.220 In the UK, they blamed Tommy Robinson.

00:08:46.720 By the way, in Turkey, where the murderer had traveled to, and the murderer also traveled

00:08:51.600 to Pakistan and other places, by the way, in Turkey, their Islamist president, Recep Erdogan,

00:08:58.140 has been using the footage of the shooting at political rallies to demonize his opponents.

00:09:05.600 I guess he's not worried about New Zealand arresting him.

00:09:07.940 And he ought not to worry.

00:09:10.520 Here is their prime minister wearing a hijab.

00:09:14.420 Now, she is not Muslim. 1.00

00:09:15.860 Why is she wearing a hijab? 1.00

00:09:17.860 I know why some Muslim women wear a hijab, but she's not Muslim. 1.00

00:09:22.900 She doesn't need to wear one to commiserate. 0.92

00:09:25.220 Why?

00:09:25.800 Why the theater?

00:09:27.940 Here's a non-Muslim policewoman in New Zealand wearing a hijab.

00:09:31.420 Why?

00:09:31.900 I don't understand.

00:09:33.060 The hijab is not a symbol of Islam.

00:09:35.260 And even if it were, are they saying they're Muslim?

00:09:37.980 It's a symbol of women's submissiveness. 1.00

00:09:40.460 Not all women wear one in Islam.

00:09:42.360 But again, that's the weaponization of this issue by the identity politics left. 0.94

00:09:46.860 If you're not wearing one, you obviously are a racist.

00:09:50.760 By the way, that's exactly what the murderer set out to do. 0.90

00:09:54.140 Get this kind of quarrel.

00:09:55.840 Here, let me read from some of his manifesto. 0.98

00:09:57.960 I say again, he is a murderer and a terrorist, and we ought to take whatever he says with 0.99

00:10:01.840 a grain of salt. 0.99

00:10:02.640 If someone is willing to murder, they may well be willing to lie, especially a lie that

00:10:06.780 they know the media would repeat.

00:10:08.040 But let me read part of it, because it's relevant.

00:10:11.360 This is what he wrote.

00:10:14.600 I chose firearms for the effect it would have on social discourse, the extra media coverage

00:10:20.260 they would provide, and the effect it would have on the politics of the United States,

00:10:24.400 and thereby the political situation of the world.

00:10:26.480 The U.S. is torn into many factions by its Second Amendment, along state, social, cultural,

00:10:32.260 and most importantly, racial lines.

00:10:34.020 With enough pressure, the left wing within the United States will seek to abolish the

00:10:37.700 Second Amendment, and the right wing within the United States will see this as an attack

00:10:41.060 on their very freedom and liberty.

00:10:42.860 This attempted abolishment of rights by the left will result in a dramatic polarization of

00:10:47.900 the people in the United States, and eventually a fracturing of the U.S. along cultural and racial

00:10:52.560 lines.

00:10:53.140 I think he meant that, I think.

00:10:57.200 But whether or not he meant that, that's exactly what has happened.

00:11:00.280 In fact, it's like his manifesto was taken as an instruction manual by the left, in addition

00:11:04.760 to instant massive censorship.

00:11:07.160 We have instant massive disarmament of the people.

00:11:10.760 New Zealand has just decided to ban all the guns used in the shooting.

00:11:14.960 And if you don't hand them in, you will be arrested, and get almost as much time as if you have

00:11:20.800 that video on your computer.

00:11:22.700 That's pretty quick, eh?

00:11:23.640 Hey, here's a question.

00:11:24.840 If that mosque had had an armed guard or an armed congregant, as some U.S. churches do,

00:11:31.460 would the gunmen have been stopped?

00:11:34.060 I don't know.

00:11:34.840 Maybe.

00:11:35.100 But I know one thing.

00:11:36.780 The murderer here probably wouldn't obey a gun control law, given that the murderer

00:11:41.440 here wasn't obeying the don't murder people law.

00:11:45.120 This isn't about stopping the next terrorist attack.

00:11:47.140 You saw the terrorist himself boasted about different ways he could have killed.

00:11:51.700 Who knows if he really could have?

00:11:53.180 But do you think that he would look at a new law against a particular kind of firearm and

00:11:57.360 say, oh, well, then I'll give up my murderous plans?

00:12:01.540 The terrorist manifesto talks about Trump.

00:12:04.080 He says he likes Trump in some ways and hates Trump in other ways.

00:12:09.000 So like I say, there's something here for everyone. 0.89

00:12:11.220 He says he's an eco-fascist.

00:12:13.020 Who knows if that's true?

00:12:14.300 He says his intellectual inspiration is Candace Owens.

00:12:18.360 But surely that's a lie.

00:12:19.360 She's a black female Republican.

00:12:21.520 Surely he must be just saying that, knowing that the left-wing media in the world would

00:12:27.180 demonize Candace and knock her down a bit. 1.00

00:12:30.660 Again, the media were only too happy to comply and take advantage of the crisis.

00:12:35.860 Here is news that Jordan Peterson, the Canadian professor, best-selling self-help author, a

00:12:41.640 friend of our show, his book is now being banned in New Zealand.

00:12:46.240 What?

00:12:48.080 Why?

00:12:48.800 Him?

00:12:49.660 On what grounds?

00:12:50.800 Oh, who knows?

00:12:51.720 Who cares?

00:12:52.420 Don't let a good crisis go to waste, right?

00:12:54.400 Maybe you've heard of the website called Zero Hedge.

00:12:57.080 I really like it.

00:12:58.440 It's a huge economics website.

00:13:00.220 Lots of news, business stories.

00:13:01.860 It's contrarian.

00:13:02.680 That's why I like it.

00:13:03.960 I think it's mainly financial and monetary.

00:13:06.340 In fact, I don't even understand everything in it.

00:13:08.560 But it's contrarian.

00:13:09.700 And it was just banned from New Zealand.

00:13:11.180 Banned.

00:13:12.200 Oh, and from Australia, too, I think.

00:13:14.080 But for sure from New Zealand.

00:13:15.140 Just because.

00:13:17.440 And do you know that kind of opportunistic authoritarianism is coming here to Canada, too?

00:13:22.180 Well, listen to Ralph Goodale.

00:13:24.100 Canada is going to consider all the tools that we have at our disposal to deal with this effectively.

00:13:31.040 When the executives of the social media companies come to the ministerial meetings and present their cases,

00:13:39.080 they usually come with lots of examples about how quickly they moved on this and how quickly they moved on that

00:13:46.600 and how their technology allows them to respond within seconds and so forth, and that they're doing their best.

00:13:54.500 Well, I think the public is beginning to lose some patience with we're doing our best argument.

00:14:02.320 They want to see effective action.

00:14:05.660 And I think we need to examine all of the tools.

00:14:08.480 Oh, so we have a massive right-wing terror threat here in Canada, do we?

00:14:13.340 You know, Trudeau just gave $10.5 million to Omar Khadr, an al-Qaeda terrorist.

00:14:18.520 Trudeau says we have to welcome back any ISIS terrorist who wants to come here because,

00:14:22.460 and he really said this, they have an important voice we need to listen to.

00:14:25.660 Trudeau has stopped stripping ISIS terrorists of their Canadian citizenship.

00:14:30.540 But the real threat is right-wingers.

00:14:33.060 Oh, you bet it is.

00:14:34.360 And Ralph Goodale and Justin Trudeau are going to pressure the Internet companies to do his bidding here, too.

00:14:40.460 That's what he says.

00:14:41.260 That's what Goodale himself says.

00:14:42.800 Look at the headline.

00:14:44.540 And if they can ban Zero Heads, just a huge website, well, surely they can ban, oh, I don't know, the rebel.

00:14:52.380 And if you're against any of this, why?

00:14:54.140 What? 0.94

00:14:54.720 Well, you're some sort of Islamophobic terrorist? 1.00

00:14:57.540 The New Zealand killer was a terrorist and a murderer. 1.00

00:15:00.020 His manifesto was a mishmash of half-baked ideas. 0.99

00:15:03.100 It's no surprise.

00:15:04.580 It was designed, I do believe, to cause mayhem and madness.

00:15:07.740 And it's working.

00:15:09.760 But it is not a license for the Ralph Goodales of the world and the Andrew Coines of the world to silence us on genuine subjects.

00:15:16.120 It is not bigoted to question the religion of Islam itself any more than it is bigoted to question the doctrine and philosophy called Christianity.

00:15:24.540 It is not bigoted to oppose mass immigration.

00:15:27.100 More than 90% of Canadians, in fact, do oppose it.

00:15:30.020 The reason we've had the media surge is indeed because a mass murderer of 50 people in New Zealand is truly news.

00:15:37.520 That's true.

00:15:38.500 But there is no link to Canada.

00:15:40.840 There is no link to genuine debates here about multiculturalism or immigration or the separation of mosque and state.

00:15:47.140 It's the Jacinda Ardern's and the Ralph Goodales and the Andrew Coines who are using those dead bodies for their own political purposes. 0.84

00:15:54.740 And I note their silence in the face of other similar mass murders in recent days, at least when it's Christians being murdered by Muslims, whether it's in Nigeria or the Philippines.

00:16:05.860 The left has a saying.

00:16:07.420 It's a Leninist saying.

00:16:09.320 The worse, the better, they say.

00:16:10.840 They love chaos and disruption.

00:16:12.540 It gives them opportunities.

00:16:13.640 They love a good crisis.

00:16:14.680 It gives them cause to do things they've always wanted to do, like banning guns or banning books or banning websites.

00:16:21.260 That's not a solution to terrorism, by the way.

00:16:23.280 It won't make a single person safer, but it will help the global left continue their mission.

00:16:29.540 Stay with us.

00:16:30.380 We'll talk about a mass kidnapping in Italy that I'm sure you haven't heard of because it doesn't fit the New Zealand narrative.

00:16:38.520 Stay with us.

00:16:44.680 Well, some massacres or attempted massacres receive enormous coverage, and I think they should.

00:17:01.760 I think the mass shooting in New Zealand is a story that should be reported on widely.

00:17:08.020 It's very interesting and disturbing, and it's a horrific crime and a tragedy, too.

00:17:13.320 But others seem to get little or no media coverage, and I wonder if there's some sort of pattern.

00:17:20.000 Look at this story that was highlighted by the son of the U.S. president, Donald Trump Jr.

00:17:25.880 He says,

00:17:26.640 I'm not at all surprised it's getting little to no coverage.

00:17:30.780 It doesn't fit the media narrative that everyone trying to come here is Mother Teresa and everyone who wants security and vetting is racist.

00:17:38.020 That's how this works.

00:17:39.160 And he retweeted a video, and I'll quote the video caption, video footage of the attack,

00:17:46.520 where the Senegalese man attempted to set a bus full of kidnapped children on fire.

00:17:54.060 Video is not graphic, but you can hear the screams.

00:17:57.480 I'm surprised that such a brazen hijacking in Italy is not getting wall-to-wall coverage.

00:18:02.380 Well, let's take a moment to look at that film, and that tweet is correct.

00:18:07.780 It is not graphic, but it is terrifying nonetheless.

00:18:11.120 Here, take a look.

00:18:11.760 Let's take a look.

00:18:41.760 Let's take a look.

00:19:11.740 51 children and their chaperones, who had been held hostage on a bus for 40 minutes, ran free, screaming.

00:19:25.560 Joining us now via Skype from Milan, Italy, is our friend Alessandra Bocchi,

00:19:31.300 from whom I first noticed this news, because funny enough, it wasn't on CNN or in the New York Times.

00:19:36.960 Alessandra, great to have you on the show again. Thanks for being here.

00:19:39.460 Thanks for having me.

00:19:41.040 Tell me a little bit more about this story.

00:19:43.620 What city was this in, in Italy, and has it received prominent news coverage in Italy itself?

00:19:51.100 So this happened in Milan, in northern Italy, and it was a school bus that was supposed to go to the gym after school.

00:20:01.960 And the driver changed the direction of the bus and threatened the kids.

00:20:07.500 He first tied them to the floor.

00:20:09.120 He covered the floor with petrol to then set it on fire.

00:20:14.900 And he said explicitly, I'm doing this to end the deaths in the Mediterranean.

00:20:21.180 This man is of Senegalese origin.

00:20:23.420 He was given Italian citizenship in 2004.

00:20:27.180 He had criminal precedents for sexual offences and for driving under the influence.

00:20:36.560 So it's unclear how he managed to even be a bus driver for school children in the first place.

00:20:42.620 And yes, it's tragic.

00:20:44.340 And how the media has covered, or rather not covered, this story is pretty crazy.

00:20:49.980 I mean, it shows the double standards that there are.

00:20:53.520 If you look at the New Zealand shooting, where about 50 people were killed, if I'm not mistaken.

00:21:01.380 In this case, it was 51 children who risked being burned alive.

00:21:05.540 I mean, they were saved last minute by a young boy who was able to take his handcuffs off and hurt himself while doing so.

00:21:12.840 He has bruises on his hands.

00:21:14.500 And he managed to call the police with a phone that had accidentally fallen on the ground.

00:21:18.920 There's a video of this boy.

00:21:21.480 And thanks to him, these children were saved.

00:21:24.080 Last minute, the police broke in the bus.

00:21:26.840 And the guy threatened to, he actually, he used a lighter to set the bus on fire.

00:21:33.720 So it was on fire when the children came out.

00:21:36.600 Unbelievable.

00:21:37.200 We have a short clip of that young boy, the hero.

00:21:40.740 I'm going to play a little bit of it.

00:21:42.940 He's speaking in Italian.

00:21:44.360 I know you've watched this clip because I got this clip from your Twitter feed.

00:21:47.160 Let's just show that boy for a second, and then we'll turn the volume down in Italian, and maybe you can explain to us what he said.

00:21:53.480 So here's the hero of the day.

00:21:55.140 Take a look.

00:21:55.720 Okay, we'll take that volume down because most of our viewers don't speak Italian.

00:22:08.380 But Alessandra, can you tell us what that young boy said?

00:22:11.960 He talked for about a minute.

00:22:13.200 His face was obscured because, of course, he's a minor child.

00:22:15.720 Yes, he said, we were all very scared.

00:22:21.660 This man threatened us, and he tied us to the floor and covered the floor in petrol.

00:22:27.720 So basically what I said before.

00:22:29.580 Now, this is terrifying, but it's also puzzling to me.

00:22:34.880 You point out some of the quirks.

00:22:36.760 He was twice convicted of drunk driving, and yet he's a school bus driver.

00:22:41.860 He was convicted of sexually molesting a minor, and yet he's a school bus driver.

00:22:48.060 But also, which is very odd to me, is he's obviously been in Italy for quite a while if he received Italian citizenship in 2004.

00:22:56.700 So he didn't just come over on these migrant-packed ships in the last few years. 0.98

00:23:04.600 He's been in Italy for 15 years, but he obviously regards Italy as hostile, as a hateful place that he wanted to hurt in the most brutal way he could imagine,

00:23:15.800 which would have been murdering 51 children.

00:23:18.560 What do you make of that, the fact that 15 years in the country, and he was a terrorist still.

00:23:24.600 He wasn't absorbed or assimilated.

00:23:27.620 Yeah, well, it clearly shows that there's a problem with integration with some people.

00:23:31.600 And also, I'd like to add that the way that the story was covered, the fact that he was in the international media,

00:23:36.960 actually in the Italian media, even the most left-wing media mentioned the fact that he was of Senegalese origin in the headline,

00:23:43.260 or at least the first paragraph, whereas the English-speaking media, so the Guardian, BBC, and so on,

00:23:49.160 didn't mention it until the third or fourth paragraph.

00:23:51.920 It was crazy, and in the headline, they didn't even say where this happened.

00:23:55.320 They didn't even mention the country.

00:23:57.180 So there's this weird wanting to omit these facts, which are central to the story.

00:24:01.760 The fact that he's Senegalese, of Senegalese origin, is inherently, is inherent to his motive,

00:24:10.380 which was to stop the death in the Mediterranean of his compatriots.

00:24:13.920 The prosecutors also found that on his phone, he sent videos to Senegalese friends that he had who were living in Senegal,

00:24:23.440 telling them, Africa writes off, you should stop coming over here, 1.00

00:24:28.980 and instead we should punish Europe for its politics towards migrants.

00:24:32.920 So it's obviously, if this was just a random crime, you don't need to mention the ethnicity, because he's a citizen.

00:24:41.160 But if his country of origin is the motive behind the attack, a terrorist attack,

00:24:47.740 then yes, you have to mention it.

00:24:49.520 It is key to the story, so it's pretty crazy.

00:24:52.480 Yeah. Now, he was complaining about the deaths of Senegalese and other Africans,

00:25:01.000 some of whom capsize in the Mediterranean.

00:25:04.080 But in fact, under Matteo Salvini, the new interior ministry of Italy,

00:25:09.540 since he has blocked these human traffickers, that's really what they are.

00:25:13.460 They can call themselves NGOs.

00:25:15.460 They can call themselves well-meaning people, but they're human traffickers,

00:25:19.080 and they do it for profit. Either they're being paid by human traffickers,

00:25:23.200 or they're being paid by, you know, leftist international groups.

00:25:28.580 They're being paid one way or the other. They're not doing it for free.

00:25:31.300 Since Matteo Salvini closed the ports in Italy,

00:25:33.940 the number of deaths in the Mediterranean has fallen,

00:25:37.420 because the traffickers know there's no point.

00:25:39.380 In many ways, Salvini has saved the lives of hundreds, maybe thousands, of these Africans.

00:25:45.620 Yes, exactly. In addition to that, the lie that has been propelled and propagated in the media

00:25:53.580 for the past year, that this populist government is responsible for deaths at sea,

00:26:00.520 I actually linked on my Twitter an interview by the BBC to the interior minister, Matteo Salvini,

00:26:07.820 and this interviewer tells him,

00:26:09.940 and you have blood on your hands, which, by the way, isn't even a question.

00:26:13.340 Like, it's not his place as a journalist to make that accusation.

00:26:16.020 But this lie that, you know, this government is responsible for more deaths at sea,

00:26:22.740 if you look at UN statistics,

00:26:25.660 you will find that actually deaths at sea have more than halved.

00:26:29.140 And so, actually, under this government, the fact that it's closed the Italian ports

00:26:34.120 has made less people take that dangerous journey,

00:26:38.060 and the NGOs have almost completely stopped working, except for a last one,

00:26:43.240 and this was the reason behind this attack, actually,

00:26:46.620 that one Italian NGO wasn't allowed to disembark the migrants in Italy,

00:26:52.920 and Salvini sued the boat for threatening public safety and human trafficking.

00:27:01.060 So, this was the reason behind the attack, but nobody died on that boat.

00:27:05.900 So, yes, deaths have gone down,

00:27:08.260 but obviously he was listening and reading the mainstream media,

00:27:13.060 and so he got this impression,

00:27:14.860 and, you know, many others also have this anger, thanks to this lie.

00:27:19.440 You know, it's interesting.

00:27:21.000 That's what our friend Joel Pollack suggested yesterday.

00:27:24.660 I asked him what he thought about the New Zealand killer,

00:27:28.800 saying, oh, I admire Candace Owens, the black Republican,

00:27:33.500 but not everything she says. 0.94

00:27:34.920 And I thought that was just a troll. 0.99

00:27:36.700 I thought that, obviously, a white supremacist murderer 0.98

00:27:40.260 doesn't admire Candace Owens, a young black woman. 0.99

00:27:44.140 I thought that he's just pushing buttons in the media.

00:27:46.780 But Joel Pollack said, well, maybe he believes the media,

00:27:50.340 because the media portrays Candace Owens, a young black woman, as a Nazi.

00:27:54.960 Maybe he believed it.

00:27:56.240 And that makes me follow up to your answer there, Alessandra.

00:28:01.180 Maybe migrants and other Italians and other people 1.00

00:28:05.200 are believing the left-wing media, 0.95

00:28:08.160 are believing that Matteo Salvini is a fascist murderer,

00:28:12.160 and maybe people like you and I can see through it. 0.59

00:28:16.660 But if you keep propagating these lies about Salvini,

00:28:20.080 about the opposition to these human traffickers,

00:28:23.620 maybe one in a thousand or even one in a million people

00:28:26.320 will believe he's the new Hitler 0.97

00:28:27.980 and will do something insane like this terrorist attack.

00:28:32.180 How much blame should we give to the propaganda media

00:28:36.260 that's whipping up people?

00:28:38.760 It sounds like this terrorist in Milan

00:28:42.240 might have been whipped up by the media.

00:28:44.900 Yes, a lot of blame.

00:28:46.400 Because, actually, you mentioned the New Zealand attack.

00:28:49.440 In the manifesto, the terrorist mentioned the birth rates,

00:28:54.120 the declining birth rates, many times as reason for his resentment.

00:28:59.440 But that's an actual fact.

00:29:01.500 Whereas, in this case, this is a lie.

00:29:03.600 The fact that this government is responsible for more deaths,

00:29:07.080 migrant deaths at sea, is a lie. 1.00

00:29:09.340 So they've been, you know, as you said,

00:29:12.180 propagating this lie for so long.

00:29:14.580 And so they've stoked up this division and hatred

00:29:17.160 that they claim that they're against and trying, you know, to fight

00:29:20.800 and that the opposition is responsible for.

00:29:22.760 But they are responsible for it.

00:29:24.540 It's just on the other side, so they don't care.

00:29:27.280 You're being very generous with your time, Alessandra.

00:29:29.760 I won't keep you long, but I do have two more quick questions for you.

00:29:32.360 Just because I have you and I find Italy so very interesting

00:29:35.560 and you're a window into Italy for our viewers.

00:29:39.580 One of my questions is about Salvini.

00:29:43.240 Is he and is Italy becoming the new Hungary? 0.65

00:29:48.140 And what I mean by that is Hungary was one of the first countries to say,

00:29:52.340 stop to Angela Merkel.

00:29:54.540 Stop to the open borders, mass migration. 0.98

00:29:57.000 Stop to the EU bullying, less wealthy countries than Germany.

00:30:02.660 Is Italy becoming that dissident state that stands up to the EU?

00:30:12.440 Is he the new Hungary? 0.97

00:30:16.260 Yes, and actually they're achieving much more

00:30:18.140 because it's a more powerful country in the European Union

00:30:20.880 because it's a founding member.

00:30:22.100 So there's no more backlash anymore for closing the ports, for example,

00:30:27.260 to mass migration.

00:30:29.060 At the beginning, the European Commission and senior members of the EU

00:30:34.020 or representatives who were pro-EU were very hostile towards this policy,

00:30:41.060 but now they've accepted it.

00:30:42.480 So I think Italy has the potential of achieving much more

00:30:47.860 and changing really the course of politics in Europe.

00:30:52.440 Well, that's interesting.

00:30:53.260 And I have one last question for you.

00:30:55.280 In the United Kingdom, which more than two years ago voted for a Brexit to leave the EU,

00:31:01.720 Theresa May, the so-called Conservative leader,

00:31:04.820 she's Conservative in name, but she certainly has, in my view, 0.99

00:31:07.700 been doing her best to resist actually leaving.

00:31:11.680 She's asked for an extension

00:31:13.360 because, of course, the UK is supposed to leave in just over a week.

00:31:18.900 But I see various UKIP or Brexit, pro-Brexit politicians in the United Kingdom

00:31:26.660 saying to other EU countries,

00:31:29.840 you can stop this because if a single EU country

00:31:35.020 vetoes the extension of the UK's participation in the EU, it's off.

00:31:42.080 Here's what I mean.

00:31:43.400 The UK has served notice to the EU that it's leaving on March 29th.

00:31:47.960 Theresa May says she wants to extend that.

00:31:50.160 But all it takes is one other country to say,

00:31:53.000 no, no, no, we're sticking with the March 29th exit as per Article 50.

00:31:58.460 And I know that some of these Brexiteers have asked Matteo Salvini

00:32:03.340 to get Italy to be one of those vetoers.

00:32:06.820 I know that's a very long and complicated question,

00:32:08.540 but do you think there's a chance that Italy could help get the UK out?

00:32:15.240 There's no evidence of this.

00:32:17.740 I've not heard that Salvini or Di Maio have any intention of that sort.

00:32:23.440 Actually, Giuseppe Conte, who's the prime minister,

00:32:26.140 said that he would like an extended period for Brexit

00:32:31.240 because a deal is better than a no deal.

00:32:34.740 OK, well, that's a good clarification.

00:32:37.140 I appreciate that.

00:32:37.740 And I know you follow things very closely.

00:32:39.880 Well, Alessandro, it's great to see you again.

00:32:41.640 You've been very generous with your time.

00:32:43.100 I rely on your Twitter feed to tell me things about Italy

00:32:46.020 because, as we've proven today,

00:32:47.820 if I were to rely on CNN or CBC or the BBC,

00:32:51.580 I simply wouldn't know what's going on.

00:32:53.780 In fact, I would know certain things that were not true.

00:32:57.060 So it's great to have you as our voice.

00:32:58.680 Thanks for your time.

00:33:00.140 Thanks for having me.

00:33:01.140 All right. It's our pleasure.

00:33:02.020 That's Alessandra Bocchi.

00:33:04.000 You can follow her on Twitter, as I do.

00:33:07.140 Stay with us.

00:33:07.920 More ahead on The Rebel.

00:33:20.180 Well, that's our show for today.

00:33:22.300 What do you think?

00:33:23.160 Did you feel personally guilty for what happened in New Zealand?

00:33:27.560 Andrew Coyne thinks you should.

00:33:29.140 If you have any criticism of Islam itself,

00:33:32.360 he and his kind think that you must be a hater.

00:33:35.840 If you have any criticism of mass open borders migration,

00:33:40.940 you've got to be a bigot.

00:33:43.160 And I think that that is going to be the campaign tactic we see in Canada

00:33:46.820 for Justin Trudeau and Ralph Goodell in their re-election.

00:33:49.800 You've been seeing it for months.

00:33:50.980 You've been telegraphing it.

00:33:52.360 He's a feminist. 1.00

00:33:53.400 You're a misogynist. 0.83

00:33:55.340 He's open-minded. 1.00

00:33:56.420 You're a bigot.

00:33:57.580 He's a friend to all. 1.00

00:33:58.840 You're an Islamophobe.

00:34:00.240 Oh, and if you keep talking about subjects he doesn't like,

00:34:03.480 you're a right-wing extremist,

00:34:05.020 and maybe the police will pay you a visit.

00:34:07.160 I can see it very clearly now.

00:34:08.620 That, plus an extra dollop of Internet censorship,

00:34:11.780 that's the re-election strategy.

00:34:14.340 Well, folks, that's our show for today and for the week.

00:34:17.220 Until Monday, on behalf of all of us here at Rebel World Headquarters,

00:34:20.360 see you at home.

00:34:20.780 Good night.

00:34:21.020 And keep fighting for freedom.
