00:00:00.000 Hello, my friends. I went out to St. Simon, or St. Simon, New Brunswick, in the heart of Acadia,
00:00:06.540 a beautiful place with the friendliest people. I forget how friendly the Maritimes are. Oh,
00:00:12.720 I love my opportunities to visit, but this was for a very sad and somber reason. The largest
00:00:18.800 wooden church in New Brunswick was burnt to the ground, and a man was arrested for arson. Incredibly,
00:00:24.920 he was from the community, and he was 68 years old. We'll tell you how we came to learn about
00:00:31.720 that and who he is, and I'll give you my report from On the Ground, a shocking, shocking story.
00:00:38.500 But first, let me invite you to get what we call Rebel News Plus. It's the video version of this

00:02:22.080 I visited the latest mighty church
00:02:33.720 to be burnt to the ground in an act of arson
00:02:36.720 and artificial intelligence tried to stop me
00:02:40.300 it's August 28th and this is the Ezra LeVant Show
00:02:43.460 Shame on you, you sensorism bug
00:02:52.080 Hi, everybody. I'm back in Toronto. I was in New Brunswick in Acadia, a French-speaking part of
00:03:04.620 the province. I flew to Moncton. Then I drove the three and a half hours to Saint-Simon, or Saint
00:03:11.360 Simon, as it would be in English, a small town where the largest wooden church in New Brunswick
00:03:18.420 stood until this week. It was built in 1917, and obviously it was the heart of the community. No
00:03:25.580 cycle of life events would have happened that didn't touch on that church. It was also
00:03:30.060 a concert hall and a daycare and everything that a church is in a community, especially
00:03:35.900 a place where religion was so important. But now it's burnt to a crisp. And interestingly,
00:03:42.180 right away, the police arrested someone for arson. There have been an enormous number of
00:03:49.420 churches that have been vandalized, torched, and some burnt all the way to the ground. But most of
00:03:55.960 them are unsolved. Police sometimes seem like they don't even care. But in this case, they caught the
00:04:03.460 suspect almost immediately. And his name was revealed to be Gilles Mallette, the accused.
00:04:10.160 And the quirky thing to me, the unusual thing to me, is that he's 68 years old and he's from the community.
00:04:19.280 How confusing that was.
00:04:21.380 And that ricocheted around in my mind as I headed out there.
00:04:25.440 As I went out there, I had thoughts about who is this man and why would he allegedly turn against his own community.
00:04:33.480 But let me start with my on-the-scene reports.
00:04:37.040 Listen to this. This is a bit of a scene-setter when I arrived at the burnt church.
00:04:42.580 Another week, another fire burnt to the ground in Canada.
00:04:46.460 What's that? More than 100 now that have been attacked with arson or vandalism.
00:04:51.620 I'm in Saint-Simon, New Brunswick, a very small village.
00:04:56.240 This was the largest wooden church in the province, built, completed in 1917.
00:05:02.900 in the wee hours on Monday a motion detector went off and a man was arrested for arson
00:05:11.140 although the alarm went off quite quickly it being a wooden church it was consumed very quickly it
00:05:18.040 took four different fire stations to respond alas as you can see behind me the whole place
00:05:24.140 is burnt to the ground there is one building there a building involved with funerals that
00:05:30.000 is unscathed the fire was so hot other buildings like that one over there and you can see behind
00:05:36.720 me a house the fire so hot and across the street i was talking to a few members of the church
00:05:44.960 one of them agreed to go on record with me and we'll have her remarks soon she's sort of the
00:05:50.720 co-president of the church uh others didn't want to be on camera it's a very small town
00:05:56.160 they're shy but one lady lucy is her name lives just down the way she said another church was
00:06:02.880 burned about five years ago at caraquette bah if i'm saying the name of the little village correctly
00:06:07.920 and i apologize i'm probably not here i'm going to lift my camera up a little bit to look over
00:06:14.560 the fence and you can see what a terrible terrible fire must have been utterly consumed by flames
00:06:21.360 you know uh the number of churches that are burned is staggering and sometimes it's a it's a pattern
00:06:30.760 sometimes it may just be a random arson but when the total number of churches that are either
00:06:37.660 vandalized scorched a little bit or utterly burnt to the ground is exceeding 100 it's a crisis it is
00:06:47.040 a pattern and it's egged on in my view by public leaders it started a decade ago when justin
00:06:57.360 trudeau's right-hand man gerald butts remarked that the arson and destruction of churches was
00:07:07.200 quote understandable that's what he said because of he blamed the churches for certain misbehavior
00:07:16.720 in residential schools and to him that was an opportunity to smear and besmirch catholic
00:07:24.240 churches and he didn't condemn them he rather egged them on a hundred churches later it's still
00:07:31.200 happening gerald butts is in new york working for mark carney's old company the churches keep burning
00:07:38.320 all the time the disinformation that's whipped up about the churches is it to blame uh police
00:07:48.560 arrested a man 68 years old on in on monday for the arson he's a local man gil millet he was born
00:07:58.940 here raised here lived here his whole life that seems to be an odd demographic for an accused
00:08:07.240 arsonist people here are puzzled by that they wonder if it was mental illness the
00:08:14.320 young man who allegedly burned the other church was also explained by locals as
00:08:20.720 having mental illness there's a lot of that mental illness going around it's
00:08:25.900 odd though that it only strikes Christian churches not Jewish synagogues well 0.97
00:08:30.980 actually I suppose that's happening more these days or Muslim mosques and that's
00:08:35.080 a thing too, isn't it? If there were 100 mosques that were burned, I think it would be front page 1.00
00:08:40.680 news. There would be a national inquiry. The RCMP would set up a task force directly focused on it.
00:08:47.200 There would be CSIS agents working on it. There's none of that here. But what you do have is another
00:08:54.780 church burnt to a crisp. I mentioned earlier that I was having an issue with AI or artificial
00:09:02.180 intelligence. I was using an app on my cell phone by the company called Anthropic, and I had an AI
00:09:09.660 helper. And as I was traveling, I would say things to the helper like, give me all of the information
00:09:16.220 you have about the history of this church, or tell me more about the town of Saint-Simon.
00:09:21.680 And the reason I like that is because I just talk to the app, and I can use plain language,
00:09:26.620 and it would read it back to me. It was very helpful. And then I said something that I thought
00:09:31.840 was pretty normal. I said, tell me everything you know about the accused man. It seems like
00:09:38.880 an ordinary question. And I was shocked with the reply. The AI lectured me and said, don't you make
00:09:46.520 the accusation that it's an immigrant? What? I didn't say anything. I wanted more information.
00:09:53.080 You can see the text of this AI scolding me. And I chirped back and it sort of apologized. It was
00:10:01.240 very weird. As it continued, I asked another time, show me the Facebook page of the accused
00:10:08.640 arsonist. And again, it snapped back at me saying it would not muckrake and that it would not share
00:10:16.480 that information, even though that's in the public domain. Anyways, I was fighting with the AI. It
00:10:21.880 didn't want me to do certain searches. It was very curious to me. Anyhow, I continued on. Here's
00:10:28.060 another commentary i made on the ground and remember i didn't know anything about the accused
00:10:35.020 other than the ai didn't want me to ask too many questions take a look behind me you can see a
00:10:42.080 neighbor's house it must have been incredibly hot the flames i mean it's just 30 or 40 feet away
00:10:48.880 from the fire i'm guessing they had to move out of their house now uh i'm here a couple days late
00:10:55.360 because this fire happened in the wee hours of monday and i didn't hear about the fire till
00:11:00.640 tuesday i flew here on wednesday but it's difficult to get to monckton um and so i drove here tomorrow
00:11:09.440 the accused appears in court for a bail hearing i'm guessing he will get bail everyone he knows
00:11:16.240 him he lives in the the town here it's a very very curious thing we don't know much about him
00:11:22.960 here's an interesting anecdote i was doing some research on this fire and the accused
00:11:28.560 on my way out and i was using as a search engine i was using one of the ai tools called
00:11:36.240 anthropic their search uh ai agent called claude and i said do a search on this accused arsonist
00:11:46.480 and the ai app refused to do so uh here i'll show you a screenshot of that bizarre statement
00:11:55.580 by the ai tool refusing to let me search for details about the man charged with arson uh in
00:12:04.840 another request i had made to the same ai agent uh the ai scolded me and said i'm not to blame
00:12:14.320 immigrants for it. I hadn't done so. I had no intention of doing so. I had heard that the
00:12:21.200 accused was local. But isn't that crazy how, at least in that AI regime,
00:12:30.340 they're obviously very sensitive about this news and they don't want people to report on it.
00:12:37.080 So who is he? Who is Gilles Mallette? Who is the man that AI so insisted I not invade his privacy by looking at his public posts on Facebook?
00:12:50.000 Well, my friend Sheila Gunn-Reed, who does her own research, doesn't delegate it to some AI agent,
00:12:58.340 she simply went on Facebook and said, as I found it, and I didn't know that until after I got back,
00:13:04.980 you can see Gilles Malet, 68 years old, and he has styled himself an indigenous warrior.
00:13:13.460 That's him wearing a shirt that says, Warrior Up.
00:13:17.480 He posts about his friend who has been put in jail, he says, for her anti-pipeline activism.
00:13:26.680 So he at the very least sympathizes with illegal actions of not participating himself.
00:13:33.920 And he identifies as a variety of indigenous people, including wearing an Inukshuk necklace, which suggests he's not just Indian, but he's Inuit.
00:13:46.120 it. I don't think he is those things. I think he is as Akkadian as the rest of the people I met
00:13:52.180 with, although of course there are Métis people there too. But I happened to encounter, it was so
00:13:59.480 curious how this happened. That's what Sheila told me only when I got back. But I encountered a local
00:14:06.100 man who knew Gilles Mallette, not that surprising considering how small a town it was. His name was
00:14:12.560 Théo Hébert. And he spoke to me. I had, I apologize. I had some trouble understanding
00:14:18.380 his French. My French is very rickety and his French had an accent I wasn't familiar
00:14:23.820 with. But listen to what Théo Hébert said about the man accused of arson in his hometown.
00:14:32.820 Take a look.
00:14:42.560 who stayed in the house. He was living in Vancouver. Supposedly, I was with the Indians.
00:14:53.560 He descended once every two or three or four years. He stayed three weeks and a month,
00:15:05.560 and he was going to go.
00:15:07.560 That's it.
00:15:09.560 The guy seemed to be arranger.
00:15:12.560 He wasn't...
00:15:14.560 He wasn't...
00:15:15.560 He wasn't normal.
00:15:17.560 I don't know what he thought of his head for that.
00:15:21.560 Supposedly, in Canada,
00:15:23.560 there was 33 Eglise,
00:15:25.560 34 with that one.
00:15:27.560 Supposedly, there were 22
00:15:29.560 who were criminals.
00:15:33.560 I don't know if there's a relationship, there's a movement or something in the country.
00:15:41.320 Gilles, I know him since I was young, and it's difficult to say what he thought about his head.
00:15:56.320 because all his brothers, I know all his brothers, his sisters, who worked a lot for the paroisse,
00:16:04.320 his brother was occupied by his book, his two brothers sang the chorale,
00:16:14.320 and I wonder why he did that.
00:16:18.320 That's right.
00:16:20.320 That's right.
00:16:22.320 That's right.
00:16:24.320 That's right.
00:16:26.320 Maybe the church will be reconstructed?
00:16:30.320 Will it be built again?
00:16:34.320 Maybe.
00:16:36.320 It's going too late to tell you what's going on.
00:16:40.320 It's the Pharisees,
00:16:42.320 with Levaïque 0.94
00:16:44.320 and the Diocèse,
00:16:46.320 According to Theo, the accused arsonist, his whole family, wasn't just attending the church,
00:17:03.020 they were involved with it. They were in the choir. They participated in it. And if you
00:17:08.420 heard him right, Theo said that Gilles Mallette, in his opinion, was mentally disturbed. And
00:17:14.260 he would hang out in Vancouver and he would come back from time to time. Now, we don't know what
00:17:19.600 really happened. We don't know if he was mentally ill or if this was his way of fighting back
00:17:25.620 against the Christian church, fighting back on behalf of indigenous people and he himself
00:17:31.080 identifying as one. I thought that was very interesting and it was shocking to me, given
00:17:36.560 the steps that the AI system took to stop me from doing research. Isn't that terrifying?
00:17:44.100 Tell you, I learned my lesson. I'll do my research directly rather than, you know,
00:17:48.320 contracting it out to an AI agent. Anyways, that was very troubling to me.
00:17:53.660 I had some good luck when I was out there. I bumped into Claudette, who is the president of
00:17:59.800 the parish. And she talked to me a little bit, a little bit about the accused. She didn't say a lot
00:18:05.280 about them, but more about what the church meant to the community.
00:18:08.520 I'm the co-president of the council of management of St. Simon,
00:18:13.320 Nouveau-Brunswick.
00:18:14.220 Oops.
00:18:15.220 Oops.
00:18:16.220 And what's going on here?
00:18:18.220 What's going on here?
00:18:20.220 On Friday night, at 5.37 in the morning, I received a call saying that the church of
00:19:55.900 There was another church in Caracat that was burnt five years ago.
00:20:00.060 Yeah, that was burned five years ago, is that true?
00:20:03.540 Yes, it's true, it's true.
00:20:05.200 A child, a young child, probably had a health disease,
00:20:10.440 we don't know, but anyway, that happened.
00:20:14.760 And the church, the police, the police had turned the fire,
00:20:20.560 But apparently he entered and rallied the fire.
00:20:24.560 I don't know, it was maybe a dozen years ago.
00:20:28.560 But why do people take us to our Catholic churches?
00:20:33.560 Why?
00:20:34.560 He had to burn the church.
00:20:36.560 You know, the church will pass on the fire.
00:20:39.560 The church, Saint-Simon.
00:20:41.560 Because everything we've lost...
00:20:44.560 Excuse me.
00:20:45.560 Everything we've lost,
00:20:47.560 It will never be replaced because it was the work of our parents, grandparents,
00:20:54.440 earlier grandparents.
00:20:57.440 In 19...
00:21:00.440 The work started in 1913 and it was finished in 1917.
00:21:07.440 It was indicated by the foundation of the community.
00:21:10.440 Right, right, right. 109 years.
00:21:11.880 Yes.
00:21:13.380 My niece is in Toronto, Josée, Josée Chiasson.
00:21:19.020 It's a bit of a problem.
00:21:22.020 Even the young people said that we had been baptized
00:21:25.460 at Saint-Simon, we had confirmation of Saint-Simon.
00:21:28.560 I had a call from Alberta, from Valleyfield, Québec,
00:21:33.400 to Moncton, and they said that we had been baptized
00:21:38.940 at Saint-Simon, etc.
00:21:41.080 My wife is from Ottawa, a baby of 15 months.
00:21:45.080 She came to Saint-Simon to baptize the little, Raphael,
00:21:49.080 and it was the last baptism.
00:21:53.080 After that, the church broke.
00:21:57.080 It's terrible, it's amazing.
00:22:01.080 It's terrible.
00:22:05.080 It's terrible.
00:22:07.080 So we say to the Mass in a week, but on the other hand, we don't have a calice, we don't have an ostrich, we don't have an eau bénite, we don't have a book for the priest, we don't have anything at all.
00:22:18.080 You know, the churches will help us to give us the articles, which are essential to say to the Mass with our priest.
00:22:27.080 Nice to talk with you, Claudette. Merci beaucoup.
00:22:30.080 Bonne chance.
00:22:31.080 Thank you very much.
00:22:32.080 Did you catch that part? There was a church just down the road that was burnt to a crisp five
00:22:37.880 years ago. I spoke to a woman who used to attend there, and her name was Lucy, who said someone
00:22:42.140 else who was mentally ill burnt that place down. It was an interesting tale himself, said he's aware
00:22:48.440 of mass church burnings. He put the number in the dozens. Of course, when you add in vandalism and
00:22:55.080 fires that didn't totally consume the church, it's actually over a hundred. I enjoyed my brief
00:23:00.880 visit to acadia and my heart was broken that the center of the community was devastated there's a
00:23:06.880 lot of acadian pride there and you see so many acadian flags which i'd never really noticed
00:23:12.000 anywhere else before here's a quick video on that there's a lot of pride in this community
00:23:17.200 uh when i started to drive from moncton to saint-simon i thought i saw a french flag and
00:23:23.520 then i saw it again and it's not the flag of france it's the flag of acadia and once you
00:23:28.240 notice it you can't not notice that there are probably more acadian flags flying than canadian
00:23:35.200 flags and new brunswick flags combined and i think there's a real community spirit and a cultural
00:23:40.560 history here it's a very special community and even the president of the church mentioned it
00:23:47.120 and spoke to me about it while wearing her acadian hat and i mentioned that not only because it's
00:23:52.320 interesting but because religion and the church has been at the heart of this community since it
00:24:00.480 began so torching a church is not just an attack on a house of worship it's an attack on a historical
00:24:08.480 cornerstone of acadia itself why did we go out there what was the point well the first point
00:24:15.840 is to tell you a story that you probably didn't see in the news i put it to you again that if this
00:24:22.240 were a mosque or a Hindu temple or a Sikh temple that was burnt to the ground and someone was
00:24:29.940 accused of arson. I put it to you, that would be the top story in the country. The prime minister
00:24:35.120 himself would weigh in. There would likely be some task force set up by the police. But it was
00:24:41.400 just a Christian church, just a Catholic church, so no such response. It was a very large church,
00:24:47.960 but it reminded me of some of the other churches that we cover that are burnt it's it's a policy
00:24:53.320 of ours that where we can we go and bear witness to it but one of the largest church fires in
00:24:58.900 canadian recent history was in the heart of toronto do you remember that here's a bit of
00:25:05.040 a flashback on that one out of respect for the church i will not go beyond this fence although
00:25:11.200 i would be very curious to see what remains could be seen in the ashes the last church fire
00:25:17.040 i went to it was heartbreaking to see the song books the prayer books and the hymns
00:25:22.140 partially charred and partially surviving it was actually quite sad and a reminder that this is a
00:25:28.240 place of people it's not just wood and metal um this is a very large church as i said before the
00:25:35.300 the largest wooden church in new brunswick and it took four different fire departments to help put
00:25:42.120 out the fire that said saint simone is not a major place and so it's not that surprising
00:25:47.320 i suppose that it's not larger news although i i say again if this were a mosque or a synagogue
00:25:53.500 or a sikh temple it would be front page news across the country but what about the major
00:25:59.680 cathedral in toronto that was burnt to a crisp i mean it was much larger than this one was it
00:26:06.140 seriously one of the largest churches in toronto burnt to a husk in the heart of the city deemed
00:26:13.340 to be foul play and have you even heard of that my point is you can make excuses for why saint
00:26:19.660 simon's fire is not front page news and leading the top of the cbc and ctv broadcast it wouldn't be
00:26:26.220 a compelling excuse because they would cover it if it was say a gay pride thing that had been
00:26:31.340 that had been burned. But how do you excuse the fact that the enormous fire of the major cathedral
00:26:38.840 in the heart of Toronto has been ignored by the media too? It's almost as if the war on Christians
00:26:45.460 and churches is accepted by the establishment. That was a mighty cathedral. That wasn't a small
00:26:54.020 church. I think that's the biggest church that's ever been burned in Canada, at least in the last
00:26:58.820 century. Do you even know about it? Do you know who did it? Do you know what charges emanated
00:27:03.620 from it? Do you know if anyone has been arrested? Do you know if an investigation is ongoing?
00:27:08.160 Of course not, because that's one of those stories that the entire regime media ignores
00:27:14.100 on purpose. They don't like the ramifications of it, and they don't like the fact that
00:27:18.980 Christians could be seen as victims rather than the oppressors. My theory, and it's based purely
00:27:24.840 on speculation and what Teo said to me, is that perhaps Gilles Millet, the accused arsonist,
00:27:30.520 if he did do it, was motivated by some feeling of vengeance. You could see his cosplaying, his
00:27:37.500 dressing up as a warrior, his sympathizing with people who were criminal, political criminals.
00:27:44.440 Did he do it as an act of indigenous vengeance on the Catholic Church? I have no evidence other than
00:27:51.400 his Facebook page and what his neighbor Tao said, but I also take away from me the shock of learning
00:27:58.700 that the AI algorithm did not want me to think about that or talk about that. Well, we'll continue
00:28:06.460 to cover this beat. It's a sad beat. There's not much we can do. We arrive after the church is
00:28:11.920 burnt, but that's what we're going to continue to do to document this. It cost me more than a
00:28:17.220 thousand dollars to get to Moncton and back, which is sort of shocking. It's only two or so hours away
00:28:22.120 by plane, but that's how it is to go to small towns in the Atlantic. If you want to help cover
00:28:26.700 the cost of my journey, I spent a night in a hotel and had the economy class airfare, I'd be grateful.
00:28:32.800 You could go to saveourchurches.ca, and unfortunately, there's a lot of stories there
00:28:39.020 in this vein you can find over the years. That's our show for today. Until next time,
00:28:45.540 on behalf of all of us at rebel world headquarters to you at home good night and keep fighting for
00:28:51.080 freedom
