00:00:00.720Hello, ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to the Rebel News live stream, Ontario Decides, Ontario Municipalities that is, not the province.
00:00:11.700We already did that less than two years ago when Doug called that snap election in February.
00:00:17.680I'm David Menzies coming to you from Rebel News World Headquarters somewhere in North Toronto.
00:00:22.960And I'm absolutely delighted to have as my co-host, she is a legend, ladies and gentlemen.
00:00:30.580She is the former city columnist for the Chwano Sun.0.98
00:06:02.260was in Toronto, Nathan Phillips Square.
00:06:04.340I think it was a cold November day1.00
00:06:06.100for the raising of the Palestinian1.00
00:06:08.300Yeah, yeah. So, I mean, he got his way with her as well. But the other thing is, if you recall, she went out to, I believe it was Markham or Mississauga, and talked to the Muslim council. And at that point, that she didn't have to do that. But she said that she felt there was a genocide in Gaza, which is absolute crap.
00:06:33.560Yeah, it's despicable. And one of the big races, of course, Sue Ann, is what's going on in0.99
00:06:39.140Mississauga, which turned into a cat fight. Can I say that? I think I just did. But it got very0.92
00:06:46.600personal. But you can say dog fight too, because I have dogs. Oh, okay. There you go. But the point
00:06:51.600I'm making on the anti-Semitism file is there was a representative that asked three of the four
00:06:58.580candidates running for mayor carolyn parish was awol but i know i know where she stands would you
00:07:04.660support bds sanctions against apartheid israel as municipalities did decades ago against south
00:07:13.620africa and they all answered yes it is gross israel is the opposite of an apartheid state i mean you0.82
00:07:22.660you have muslim arab members of the knesset can i tell you something i was just there a week ago0.91
00:07:29.380and i went on this fabulous hike with terror survivors it was very moving and the first day
00:07:35.700it was very difficult we were going through boulders and stones i think the guy took us on
00:07:41.540far too ambitious a trek and the medic who helped me get through the trail was from ethiopia yes a
00:07:51.380black israeli and and there are all kinds of it's like israelis are not white they're not white
00:07:59.140supremacists they're of all colors of all origins and i mean the narrative here the ignorance
00:08:08.100about israel and soon if i can get personal if you don't mind um you have since come out you0.99
00:08:14.100are lesbian you forced me out long story sue ann levy once hated me folks i swear to god but0.96
00:08:21.620i won her over i'm the adorable one after all but what i'm getting at um you can be openly lesbian0.98
00:08:29.060in israel right israel is the only country in the middle east that has not one but two gay pride
00:08:35.460parades and in jerusalem yet which is a very religious very religious absolutely but the show
00:08:41.700goes on if sue ann levy you were go to gaza and you're open about your sexuality what happens
00:08:48.980oh i i think from anything from having my hands cut off to being thrown off the building and it0.73
00:08:55.220has happened people have been hung who have been found to be gay so sue ann and i see them all the
00:09:01.620time to israel by the way yeah to you know be able to express their sexuality openly yeah so so much0.53
00:09:09.860for the apartheid argument and by the way how do you react uh given your sexual orientation
00:09:17.300when you see people as i have for three years at these pro-hammas demonstrations and they're0.51
00:09:21.940wearing shirts that say queers for palestine chickens for kfc that's what i say i mean0.97
00:09:29.140they're a bunch of kooks you know so i'm a real fan of gadsad who's written this book about suicide0.81
00:09:37.380empathy and the only way i can describe it is how he describes it in the book that they have this
00:09:43.780extreme suicide empathy they side with people who would like to kill them yep and it's like
00:09:50.580the oppression olympics gone wild i urge you folks to read suicidal empathy uh i think it's the most
00:10:00.900important book of the year right uh the cover is brilliant it's a sheep holding a sign saying free
00:10:06.260the wolves yeah and you know what so you know what the most chilling anecdote in that book was
00:10:11.940it was a woman in a german city who was gang raped and when the police came to do the uh
00:10:21.780and i can't think of anything worse than that maybe death um when the police came to do the
00:10:27.860police work who what where when why you know all the questions one of the questions was what
00:10:34.420language were they speaking and this woman said they were speaking german and later as the
00:10:41.940investigation went on and they rounded up the guys guess what they spoke arabic and farsi
00:10:48.820she was so concerned about being culturally insensitive to her rapists that she lied about
00:10:57.060that listen we have been hearing all kinds of stories and of course we know what's going on
00:11:01.220in europe but we've been hearing all kinds of stories for example of uh gay men even taking in
00:11:09.540uh a refugee an african refugee just read one recently where he lived with them stole their
00:11:16.420money and cut off their heads so this is what i call suicide empathy beyond the pale yeah it is0.99
00:11:23.700it's must reading folks and uh you know because basically what the title implies empathy suen0.99
00:11:31.140empathy is a good quality but it's not directed in the right way exactly you know you can have
00:11:37.220empathy for gay people for people like me yes i can have empathy for the homeless in toronto which
00:11:43.220i do the left would like to think i don't um but this is having empathy for people who want you
00:11:51.620dead i don't understand it wow well you know what folks we're going to get into uh as many of these
00:11:58.380elections as the night goes on the polls will be closing in 12 minutes and uh we have
00:12:05.580who are you voting for you live in toronto yeah i voted for brad bradford okay there you go um
00:12:14.820And we have all sorts of interesting cities.
00:26:20.020see i would love to see brad bradford win that's of course what i think we're all hoping for
00:26:26.020um i don't know the polls are back and forth i don't know if i uh you know i can't say i i believe
00:26:32.560them when they're good for us and i don't believe them when they're not that would be hypocritical
00:26:36.660um i am really worried about olivia chow being re-elected but i can tell you right now that
00:26:42.800everybody i know is cheering hard for brad bradford in toronto yeah yeah i've never seen people so
00:26:49.100illuminated and so invested in an election yes i agree it's always a pleasure i know lady menzoid
00:26:56.540is watching at home she's a huge fan of yours she loves her too well she loves your farrah
00:27:01.660faucet hair she can't she's obsessed with it so uh beauty and brains in one package thank you so
00:27:07.980much tracy wilson thanks guys enjoyed the rest of the night thank you fantastic and that's tracy0.68
00:27:13.180wilson with the ccfr i'm not making that up to it lady menzoid is obsessed with tracy wilson's hair
00:27:19.900and she's obsessed with sydney sweeney's breasts do you think she's switching teams on me uh i hate1.00
00:27:26.540to tell you but you already have i knew it i knew there was something fishy uh but uh that was great
00:27:37.260I mean, you know, guns aren't really a municipal issue, but given the crime wave, Sue Ann, they kind of are, if you want to protect yourself.
00:27:45.800They are because our political leaders are always blaming guns, the access to guns, rather than the actual criminals.
00:27:59.000And instead of tough consequences, they want to give them more basketball courts and get to the root cause of crime.
00:28:05.700And Olivia was saying this 25 years ago and is still saying the same thing.
00:30:55.000Well, you know, nobody's paying much attention to her because she's such a whack job.
00:31:00.380But I mean, the very fact that she's running and saying this and she feels no, you know, any sense of decorum to keep her mouth shut really shocks me.
00:31:15.720and scarlett you have done a stellar job covering the pro-hamas demonstrations and the anti-iranian
00:31:23.640regime demonstrations you have seen the hatred out there from a ringside seat sometimes you're
00:31:30.440the victim of that hatred what's going on in toronto in the dominion of canada in 2026
00:31:37.960just pure madness something that you wouldn't believe and something that i think a lot of
00:31:42.920people who don't experience it and aren't out in the streets like we are probably don't believe
00:31:48.040because they're in their living rooms at home watching the cbc and if you don't have kind of
00:31:54.580a front row seat to the actual madness the police bias the chaos in our streets i mean how would you
00:32:01.480know about it and how would you believe it and people are very much sheltered they're in their
00:32:06.480own little bubbles it's so true but i'll tell you uh when we were in israel last week they know
00:32:13.320what's going on they were asking me how i'm coping and how we are coping with the anti-semitism but
00:32:21.440you're right cbc uh ctv even uh it's gone you know rogue and they don't cover this stuff at all
00:32:31.840And I keep saying to people, you have no idea what's going on in the streets of Toronto.
00:32:37.240It really is all thanks to Twitter and the internet that we can share our true experience of being in Toronto.
00:32:44.580Because otherwise, my neighbours out here, like I said, I'm out in the country, they have no idea what's really going on.
00:47:20.400Was that a huge gamble that just blew up in the mayor's face?
00:47:25.000Oh, I think it was one of the greatest political backfires of all time.0.98
00:47:29.640You know, and levying the claim that Clarington residents are racist is ridiculous.
00:47:38.380there's there's um flarington residents aren't racist um and the only thing that we had was a
00:47:45.260case of um political gaslighting out here to pander for votes and um as you know soon um the
00:47:53.060islamic community out here um didn't even support um the um the goose killer and um they turned
00:48:01.080their they turned their back on the uh on the mayor as well and as you can see tom got 53.10.65
00:48:07.140percent and um that's a that's a that's a good victory for him it is a good victory it's a solid
00:48:13.780victory and um that you know out here uh uh foster was mayor for 16 years and um he raised taxes
00:48:24.740every year and i'll give you an example when i was mayor i was elected for uh for nine years
00:48:30.580And we decreased taxes for four years in a row.0.61
00:48:36.220And so they also gave themselves a 42% increase in salaries over the past term, which is, you know, absolutely ridiculous.
00:48:49.240So residents couldn't afford this mayor anymore.
00:48:52.220And, you know, usually with an incumbent, people think about, well, you know, I'm worried about change.
00:48:59.160I'm worried about change, but not this time around because the residents just said, I don't think I can afford to keep this mayor here any longer.
00:49:07.120And Tom, former Durham Regional Police Homicide Detective, former Durham Regional Police Professional Standards, he knows his law and order.
00:49:19.660And he is a he's a great family man. He's going to be one heck of a good mayor for our municipality.
00:49:25.800Well, that's good to hear, John. And by the way, is he going to do anything? I know one of the issues out there, and we did a story with you, is that festering dangerous eyesore, the former Goodyear plant, which has been abandoned for some 10 years now. What's his take on that?
00:49:45.180Well, I think you're going to see him do something immediately as soon as he takes office with respect to making sure the court order is carried out on the property.
00:49:56.840I would even go so far because they continue to have activity on the property, even with the court order.
00:50:02.420And there's two roads that lead to the property.
00:50:04.360If I were him, I would declare both those roads half load.
00:50:09.560So construction trucks can't go up and down their construction material as well.
00:50:14.900I think he's got a big job in speaking to Todd McCarthy because Todd really hasn't been anywhere with respect to the environment issue.
00:50:26.620Now, he's the minister of the environment.
00:50:28.920And we've got one of the largest environmental catastrophes sitting right here in his backyard.
00:53:05.180And the integrity commissioner that handled everything has since resigned in many municipalities across Ontario.
00:53:12.680And my position is that as a member of council elected by the public, they should not have any say in your salary, suspending your salary.
00:53:21.980That's up to the electorate every four years to say if I want you to be continue or not.
00:53:27.860And I'm not sure if you folks know, because I know the same balloting procedure was taking place in Oshawa.
00:53:34.240I haven't seen the results there yet, but we we think that's going to be an interesting race over there with Tito, Dante, Mayor and Pietri likely to take the mayor's position.
00:53:45.380I don't know if you have those results there or not.
00:53:47.440or not yet john in fact you know uh durham region which is east of toronto that's your uh
00:53:54.480your hood if you will so and it did well we've seen the regime change if you will in clarington
00:54:01.200but what about the other major cities such as uh pickering oshawa ajax whitby any thoughts on
00:54:07.200what's going to happen yeah i think um i think kevin remains um in the um in the marriage chair
00:54:13.600in pickering and i'm gonna i'm gonna tell you this is very interesting um because um he's got um
00:54:20.560there's going to be an anti uh kevin asphalt for sure um and there's going to we're going to get
00:54:26.320to see a true number in terms of what the i i don't know if you want to call it alt-right or
00:54:33.360whatever but they're going to be lining up behind lisa robinson and some of the issues that she had
00:54:38.000We're going to get to see a real true number of what that level of support is in a GTA municipality, which is going to be very interesting for the future, for future elections.
00:54:49.760And if you did not want to vote for Kevin, if you did not want to vote for Lisa, there were a couple of other alternatives.
00:54:57.860So the anti-Kevin vote would be split over there.
00:55:01.560That's why I believe that Kevin's getting back in.
00:55:04.080In Ajax, Marilyn Crawford versus Ashmed Khan.
00:55:08.440I believe that Marilyn has had the profile and that she will be getting in as the mayor of Ajax.
00:55:15.100Over in Whitby, we know that we had a dogfight between Chris Leahy and Liz Roy.
00:55:24.100My gut feeling is that Liz Roy is going to get back in.
00:55:28.780And that's not because Chris wasn't a good candidate.
00:55:32.080Chris brought out all the issues regarding the million-dollar door
00:55:36.500that they paid for at Durham Region, these refrigerators.
00:55:41.560But the only reason that I think it didn't resonate as much
00:55:44.820is that mayors the second time around, after they're elected,
00:55:48.080their re-election, they usually get an easy go the second time around.
00:55:51.880The public usually give them another chance at it.
00:55:54.360It's not usually to your third election where you're really facing problems.
00:56:01.000I haven't seen the numbers yet, but obviously, you know, we've got fiscal responsibility and against against, you know, some of the spending issues over in Whitby and that resonated with Durham region and that in the million dollar door.
00:58:41.960just simply from the split of the anti-vote.
00:58:47.560And that's one of the things that Tom didn't have here.
00:58:49.820He was just one-on-one with Foster, and he took him out straight on.
00:58:54.080So I think that's what's going on in Durham region.
00:58:57.780It's going to be very interesting, if I might add,
00:59:00.260regarding what's going to be going on, because on November 1st,
00:59:04.060they're going to be announcing the new regional chair out here.
00:59:07.900And if you remember, the regional chair used to be elected,
00:59:10.600and it was john henry and then the province made the regional chair being appointed and
00:59:18.680henry wasn't allowed to apply as i understand so there's people that have applied for the
00:59:23.480regional chair's position now i understand the premier said that minister of municipal affairs
00:59:28.840rob plaque and then associate minister grayden are going to be making decision on the regional chair
00:59:36.520appointments but this is going to be really interesting and anyone that is on the side of
00:59:42.680fiscal responsibility is going to stay tuned on this because if the province appoint a regional
00:59:49.080chair who they've given strong chair powers to that guy better be bringing in a zero budget
00:59:55.480because john if i may ask what was the ostensible policy reason to appoint a regional chair
01:00:02.120as opposed to that little messy thing called democracy having voters saying this well i think
01:00:09.440because um um well back in the day when roger anderson was a regional chairman roger was a
01:00:15.700good regional chairman i actually ran against him one time but he was a good regional chairman
01:00:19.300and when he was appointed at first and we all decided to make uh to make him elected because
01:00:24.840he was always acting like he was elected so we said let's make it an election so um and by roger
01:00:31.120did a lot for roger left a legacy in durham no question and um so john henry's been in there and
01:00:37.040john henry's basically been a um ineffectual um perpetual huge property tax increases they just
01:00:46.640um voted to put in place a 10-year capital budget of 1.2 billion dollars for durham regional police
01:00:54.240i don't know how you can do that you're tying other other councils to um 1.2 billion dollars
01:01:00.000it'd be the largest police capital expenditure right across canada so um so i guess they need
01:01:07.040the money for all those drones they're putting up in the area yeah it could be but so you know
01:01:13.120i had a lot to do with um with uh writing the um a lot of the um um the policy regarding what's
01:01:20.560going to happen to the regions so i um i suggested that they go to a weighted vote which they're
01:01:26.480doing in niagara they adopted it so wait and vote for the mayors and then i think that durham
01:01:31.600region and the region should change into services boards it's going to save the taxpayers money
01:01:37.200reduce the duplication between the area municipality and the region and that way any
01:01:43.200municipality can purchase the level of service that they want from durham region if they want
01:01:48.800more police presence they purchase it if they want less police presence then they don't have
01:01:53.600to pay as much same thing with with roads and then uh obviously uh this uh this past four years the
01:02:00.480province took the regions out of the out of planning and again there's still so much duplication
01:02:06.720that exists between the regions and the area municipalities i expect them all to change into
01:02:12.160services boards and niagara is going to be the example over the next four years and i think
01:02:18.640that is why the regional chairs are being appointed by the province of ontario now if you
01:02:25.120know we've heard rumors that um of who could possibly be the regional um chair in new york
01:02:31.520they took uh the last term they took a senior bureaucrat i think it was a former deputy uh
01:02:36.480chief of police um i can't see it being a former elected person um because that person is still
01:02:43.440going to have significant ties to the council that's here and it's going to be very difficult
01:02:51.440for them to um let's just say um to turn the region into a services board and to take um and
01:02:59.360to stop duplication of services so it's going to be really interesting who they appoint because um
01:03:05.600it's going to be a make or break appointment and the province are going to wear anything that's
01:03:09.360going to have a tax increase especially since the new chair is going to bring in the budget so
01:03:14.240i think that's going to be one of the most super interesting things that happens after the election
01:03:19.840well john you're truly an insider and one last question before you go um it's the flip side of
01:03:27.280east of toronto i'm talking west of toronto i'm talking about hamilton andrea horwath the mayor
01:03:32.800there the woman who would be premier uh i understand that uh position might be in play
01:03:39.600i think you told me that hamilton has a history of not rewarding mayors with a second term
01:03:45.840i've heard her campaign has been awful so what what's going to happen in the hammer well i you
01:03:53.200know i got a feeling that she's going to go back in but what i'm telling you is that um hamilton
01:03:59.680has always had one-term mayors they had fred eismont and then they threw him out then they
01:04:04.400had bob pertina then they threw him out and it's a really fickle electorate down there and um i
01:04:09.920don't know what you oh you don't have any results in there now but um i think that um it's going to
01:04:15.440be super interesting now i know that um andrea started to work with the province a bit so as
01:04:22.160As soon as she left her position as as the leader of the NDP, I remember being around provincial cabinet ministers and saying that, well, Andrea is calling down here.
01:04:34.860Oh, she's really working with us. Well, you know, and there's no mayor in Ontario that works with the province as well as Michael Del Duca.
01:04:46.140And obviously he ran against the dog. He was the leader of the Liberal Party.
01:13:27.900what they do the unions prop them up the union back candidates get whatever they want at school
01:13:34.460board and then at city hall it makes it very tough for people like you to jump into the race so you
01:13:41.100are to be congratulated i i you know i this will sound naive completely underestimated the extent
01:13:48.300to which that was a factor yeah in municipal politics uh because you always hear independent
01:13:53.020independent independent it's not really not at all i will say this karima i think you had the best
01:14:00.600slogan in toronto which was um be happy vote sod but seriously you're an independent journalist
01:14:08.780you do great work in the field you take a lot of heat you're a lioness out there you're a lawyer
01:14:14.300what in the world motivated you to get into the wacky world of municipal politics in the first
01:14:20.480place well i mean there was obviously opportunity as we just discussed um and i see this whole
01:14:29.280election period as a platform for public education uh and and so with my journalism
01:14:36.480you know i cover things and offer some limited commentary um and now i've had an opportunity
01:14:43.040to weigh in a little bit more and talk about kind of how what happens in the street
01:14:49.040really does affect city hall and vice versa um right it's not um it's not happening in a vacuum
01:14:56.880uh and and so that's been kind of a running theme in a lot of the conversations i've had
01:15:02.240um public safety open drug use um you know the sort of ideological influence that that appears to be
01:15:12.880omnipresent at city hall and not everyone is is happy with that and the sense i get is you know
01:15:20.160we wish that people would be doing their jobs within their mandate and doing their jobs well
01:15:25.200and that's what i stand for and did you run into progress toronto on the campaign a little bit um
01:15:33.360i will say in my ward um they did not run sort of the negative campaigns that we've seen in other
01:15:41.360wards um so that was fortunate um for them um and you know it they definitely um are skilled
01:15:51.860organizers i will give them that um and kind of good at mobilizing people um but the unfortunate
01:15:59.380thing is that the tactics aren't always above board or or honest um right there's misrepresentation
01:16:07.540there's kind of putting people in boxes or applying labels that don't necessarily fit
01:16:13.280and it's all in service of a type of fear-mongering so I don't think that that is healthy for our
01:16:20.200political landscape and kind of I didn't have to deal with it formally from them but a lot of that
01:16:27.560attached itself to my campaign and you know we just it's it's like being out on the street one
01:16:34.340foot in front of the other and you keep it moving and go through all the
01:16:38.480processes that you have to but it's it's exhausting on top of actually just
01:16:43.560being a candidate I found towards the end of the campaign though that people
01:16:49.100were saying I can't stand them I understand what they're trying to do I
01:16:53.480think people were catching on to their tactics yeah they went after Anthony
01:17:01.820fury with a vengeance last two years ago i would find their literature at the door because i helped
01:17:08.540them canvas but i don't think their can their tactics were as effective this time people are
01:17:16.380fed up with it people are fed up with this kind of just being told what to think and you know fed
01:17:22.460certain buzzwords and now you must do this otherwise you too are a bigoted blah blah blah blah blah
01:17:28.460Like, we're over it. I think everyone's over it. And, you know, we'll see in the actual results. But regardless, I don't think that momentum is going away anytime soon. You know, it has worn its course.
01:17:43.800And of course, Anthony Fury, a former colleague of yours at the Trons, who I think would have made a superb mayor.
01:17:49.340I really do. Karima, tell me, I must say, bike lanes have been in the news lately.
01:17:55.180Premier Ford getting them yanked out over Olivia Chow's opposition in Etobicoke.
01:18:01.540I know in the Danforth, quite frankly, I think bike lanes there have destroyed that street.
01:18:07.360I've spoken to restaurateurs, retailers, people that live there.
01:18:10.860they hate it uh the street has been reduced to a one-lane conga line um i'm gonna put you on the
01:18:17.400spot where do you stand with that uh can we make danforth avenue great again by ripping those bike
01:18:24.100lanes out yeah i think that on arterial roads like danforth um and and especially because you know
01:18:31.900there used to be the taste of the danforth pretty consistently um the pandemic threw a bit of a
01:18:37.540and then it was sort of space and infrastructure issues and yet they got
01:18:44.360over it this year but I do see that as a problem there's also a lot of
01:18:50.440cyclists in Danforth but there's so much green space and that it's not
01:18:54.580inconceivable to have moved some of this infrastructure over you know the real
01:19:00.760issue to me on bike lanes is that obviously the province and the
01:19:06.640municipal level like there's something dysfunctional in that relationship when money is being spent
01:19:11.760to put infrastructure in and then rip it out and then on top of that police people who are trying
01:19:17.460to prevent that court order from having effect right so it's just so much wasted resources
01:19:24.480and the talking of it is a bit weird too and convenient in a sense I would say for the
01:19:32.000incumbent mayor um because it's been an issue that they've rallied around and they've mobilized
01:19:37.000around um and you know she generally seems to have a good relationship with the premier
01:19:43.220um so the fact that for the last couple of weeks of the campaign you had kind of this
01:19:50.060energy and people coalescing and fighting for an issue that she champions you know the timing of
01:19:58.640It was just, I would say, convenient for her.
01:20:01.260And one last thing before we go, we're up against an ad break, Karima.
01:20:28.640Yeah, so that is something that I covered. It's just outside of my ward. It's in Ward 19. And I will say from the time that myself and Joe and Lynn Brooks and a few others were recording the area, there has been an improvement in that the fencing that was kind of keeping everyone corralled and that was being used to affix like the stolen scooters and bicycles and whatever.
01:20:56.360that fencing has since been removed um so there's been a slight improvement um well actually i would
01:21:03.540say more than a slight improvement um it's still sort of a a bit of a sketchy walkthrough area um
01:21:11.220so by no means is the problem resolved um but i i do think that some of the um coverage that
01:21:19.000you know and people paying attention um prompted um some of that improvement so you know i
01:21:25.300it's it's that that's just uh what it is on the ground but of course it's not unique to
01:21:32.420that neighborhood there are lots of um parts in the city that uh are effectively no-go zones and
01:21:39.720the weirdest thing to me um is sort of the online commentary where people insist no no no this is
01:21:45.880fine actually i bring my kid here all the time i would walk there as a woman alone at night no
01:21:51.100problem um and it's just this weird sort of rejection of of reality and it's not just on
01:21:57.180this issue it's on many issues so kind of that's what's going to be decided at the ballot box today
01:22:03.540well karima good luck thank you for your time and don't scooter off into the sunset
01:22:10.080when this is done and lock your scooter how many times is that thing being stolen and it shows up
01:22:15.540in hamilton all the time right oh my goodness and it's not even from a lack of diligence on my part
01:22:20.720people will cut the logs um but i have an archive of probably eight or nine videos now of scooter
01:22:27.720recoveries um so one day you know when i'm out of the politician world and we want to kind of show
01:22:34.640some racy footage i'll show you uh some self-help videos fantastic thank you so much karima you're
01:22:41.040always there you go you know kareem assad whenever she refers to me uh she always says david menzies
01:22:47.940and capitals the hat i think she was originally trying to get under my skin but i like it and
01:22:54.880you got to try harder than that to get under my skin suen i have a quick ad read here it's for
01:23:00.120keat you know what folks encryption matters but encryption and architecture are not the same thing
01:23:07.840messaging apps encrypt your conversations while still routing them through company-operated
01:23:15.940infrastructure. That creates an intermediary and a sent system that users are required to trust.
01:23:26.100Keet removes that central message infrastructure. It's free end-to-end encrypted messenger built on
01:23:34.620peer to technology. You can send messages and files and make audio or video calls without
01:23:42.200a company server holding your conversation history. Kate doesn't know your phone number
01:23:49.420or email and it doesn't collect your metadata. That is the difference. Not another promise
01:23:56.320that a central platform will behave responsibly. A system designed to know as little about you
01:24:04.240as possible search keit ki in the app store or google play it's completely free download keit
01:24:12.480invite someone you trust and take the corporate middleman out of your next conversation visit keit
01:37:34.760and my writing is Davenport and it is led by a Progress Toronto councillor Alejandra Bravo right
01:37:42.800Alejandra Bravo yep and so where I am there are a lot of Olivia Chow signs and where I am in
01:37:49.640particular is clearly part of the the ward that is dominated by the left however I still I'm still
01:37:57.480seeing a lot of signs for what I consider to be the center-right leaning candidate Marco Martins
01:38:03.340I want to see what kind of numbers he puts up tonight because I have a feeling that in the north end of the riding where it's heavily dominated by Italian immigrants and Portuguese immigrants, he's going to do extremely well.
01:38:15.040And so if he's able to pick up some support where Bravo dominates, that might be very interesting to watch.
01:38:22.740If there can be any, if it is going to be, as the betting markets predict, and as some of the latest polling was showing, a tight race that Chow ends up just surviving on.
01:38:33.960I guess one of the good things we could look out for, hopefully, is if any of these Progress Toronto candidates go down and we get some, hopefully, some sanity back into council.
01:38:43.340Well, I think I wrote about six of them.
01:58:49.400Yeah, I know that, for example, Bradford, who is in the lead, he made some promises on taxes, promised to freeze property taxes in his first year in office, also reduced the land transfer tax.
01:59:01.880And these are some good ideas that is going to save taxpayers money.
01:59:05.800It's definitely a stark contrast to, say, a 9.5% property tax that Torontonians were hit with in 2024, right?
01:59:13.200But again, these politicians, they can say one thing in the campaign, but are they actually going to follow through for taxpayers?
01:59:20.720It's important that Bradford, or Chow for that matter, if she gets elected, deliver for taxpayers.
01:59:25.920Don't hike property taxes on Toronto taxpayers.
01:59:29.900Actually, Toronto property taxpayers, they can use a break.
01:59:33.840Wait a minute, Noah. You're not inferring that politicians don't always tell the truth all the time, are you?
01:59:39.780Oh, well, David, I've read a book or two in my life.
01:59:43.200I think I can safely say I know how this game kind of works a little bit.
01:59:49.240Even at your young age, how do you like that, Sue?
02:00:00.080I'm so happy you gave us that anecdote because you have a 13-year-old sister who is engaged in the process.
02:00:06.920And I would argue, Noah, there's too much lack of engagement.
02:00:10.420so many municipalities you're going to see the turnout being around 30 percent what are your
02:00:16.760thoughts given that the municipal government that's the one that affects you every day with
02:00:23.060all the services they're responsible for why the apathy noah i i think a lot of canadians are just
02:00:30.600really focused on their day-to-day and sort of just putting food on the table trying to get to
02:00:36.240work and do do a good job while they're at it and and bring their kids to soccer practice and they
02:00:41.000really only have time to pay attention to some headlines here and there and and uh whatever's
02:00:46.000going on with the federal government catches uh the most headlines faulted by the provincial
02:00:50.240government right that's where all the political drama is so i think a lot of taxpayers uh get
02:00:55.620caught up in the headlines but it's important that taxpayers are staying vigilant at all levels of
02:01:00.860government sure the the federal government they can impose punishing carbon taxes on you
02:01:04.640but your mayor can also impose a crazy nine and a half percent property tax hike on you that has
02:01:10.260just as big an impact. So I think voters should be paying attention to what happens in their
02:01:16.040municipality. It's very important. They waste just as much money as the federal government does.
02:01:21.420And it's really an area of politics where you can have a much bigger and outsized impact compared
02:01:27.240to say voting in a federal election. But you know, Noah, I will challenge you on your premise
02:01:31.640And you're absolutely right. Everyone's got to worry about, you know, their their work, getting the kids to soccer practice, hockey prep, whatever.
02:01:40.060But you know what? There are so many opportunities with advanced polling to go out on a weekend.
02:01:46.880Surely you can make 20 minutes to do that. I don't think that's too much of an ask.
02:01:52.840But here we are. And we'll we'll see what the I'm predicting, however, we might get over 50 percent turnout in Toronto.
02:02:00.600I think it's going to be much higher than before.0.88
02:02:04.960Unfortunately, Olivia has leapt ahead.
02:02:54.600Well, talk about that. What about bike riding? You have to be so careful.
02:02:59.600oh yeah yeah in toronto you know and you know the irony is that olivia chow has pushed bike lanes0.99
02:03:07.260and the biking agenda but if you don't fix the roads yeah it's not just cars in fact the bikes
02:03:15.320feel it more because i've been in my car and my on my bike and you know flying over all these
02:03:22.140ruts and potholes but not fun when you're on a bike and so unless anyone thinks i'm anti-bike
02:03:29.120that's not true cycling is my number one form of exercise i have a gorgeous racing bike and
02:03:37.920i mean cycling suanne is why i'm fat merely fat as opposed to circus fat okay so i've never heard0.64
02:03:45.740that yeah so if i if i don't get my candy ass on that saddle uh you're gonna see the blob part two0.69
02:03:52.260the point is i've always gone around town without a segregated bike lane and toronto as you know0.95
02:04:01.000suen the worst gridlock in all of north america yeah that beats los angeles that means mexico
02:04:07.540city we're third in the world after london england and dublin ireland and i'm telling you it's you
02:04:13.880don't have to be a scholar in mathematics you take two lanes of traffic and reduce it to one
02:04:19.660you've got double the volume on one lane of traffic of course that adds to the gridlock
02:04:25.360i'd say we got to get rid of all these um bike lanes i'm sorry they were on a frenzy to put in
02:04:31.320as many as possible and they've got this very radical left transportation department tory was
02:04:36.760the worst during covid he snuck in all these lanes on university avenue hospital row yeah
02:04:43.760Danforth, all those bike lanes. So he was the one who started all of this. There was no thought given to how it would impact on traffic. And Jennifer, do you remember her, Jennifer Kiesmat? She was pushing Eglinton Connects. So I'm not near, so we suffered through 12 years of the LRT build, more than 12 years.
02:05:07.780then what they do is because the lanes were reduced now they've put in bike lanes along
02:05:14.360no one uses them correct except the motorized e-bikes yeah that are going to pick up food
02:05:23.880which the cyclists hate by the way and i almost got run over by one today
02:05:27.980but by the way probably a leftist i'm gonna respectfully correct you you said the city
02:05:34.300didn't put any thought into putting in those bike lanes i'm sorry you're dead wrong they put a lot
02:05:39.420of thought in it there has been a war on the car yeah for over 25 years in this city and they're
02:05:45.900winning they didn't think how it or care maybe how it would impact but my point is they put them in
02:05:52.460on eglinton but there's a belt line just south of eglinton where you can ride all the way through
02:05:59.100there was no need for these bike lanes but sue ann believe me the strategy is for motorists to
02:06:05.740get so frustrated yeah that's it i'm going to be a cyclist that's it i'm going to be public
02:06:11.020use public transit no motors just sit in their car steaming with their white knuckles on the
02:06:17.660steering wheel they ain't moving it's been a failed ideological well they don't care about
02:06:22.940the demographics either because we're an aging population i don't age but other people do so
02:06:28.940So I can't take my mother, who's 93, on the back of my bike to Sunnybrook Hospital for a checkup.
02:21:22.400So I don't know where they're going to get the infrastructure.
02:21:24.680I don't know where they're going to get the people.
02:21:26.560And these were things that they were very concerned about.
02:21:29.180So, Martin, if that is the case, and assuming Mayor Scarpetti wins another term, what does that say about the electorate, that you're hearing almost unanimous complaints about how the city is run, but he's going to be re-elected nevertheless?
02:21:47.400I can't even answer that one for you, Dave, because like I said, there wasn't a door that I went to that said, you know, thank you, but we don't want your brochure. We're happy. We're happy with Frank.
02:21:57.540some people i'd get to the door and they would you know say to me and this is many people they
02:22:02.720would say to me oh you're running for mayor okay well what are you going to do for this city and
02:22:06.420then before i'm about to tell them and then then they would start going on a rant and i'm like
02:22:10.000you know what maybe i'll just sit here close my mouth and not risk upsetting you because
02:22:14.540you're answering your own questions right now some people i'd get hi i'm running for mayor
02:22:19.060of mark i'm out of my mouth they take the brochure yep i'm voting for you wow you don't
02:22:23.160my platform so and this is this this is a guy who didn't put up one sign not a t-shirt not a pen
02:22:29.940not a coffee mug not a brochure he wouldn't he wouldn't debate me i i've called him out on
02:22:35.320instagram there was no debates whatsoever markham i think we're the only municipality who probably
02:22:40.260didn't have a have a debate you know whereas toronto had four mississauga had seven we had
02:22:44.980zero that's so and your take on that well i think he's gotten very comfortable in his job
02:22:51.880and he thinks he's untouchable and unfortunately the voters you know are always right not that
02:23:00.540they are always right but they don't take the time they'll complain a lot but they don't take
02:23:07.020the time to investigate the issues or to find out i mean i was so disheartened when i was at city
02:23:14.320hall by some of the election results because they x the box or i guess you fill in the circle now
02:23:21.920uh of the person they the name they recognize there's you got to remember too that if this guy
02:23:28.580frank scarpetti has been in you know in office for what you said 20 years 20 years he's going
02:23:34.740for 24 but he's been at city hall for yeah well first of all there should be term limits we talked
02:23:39.120about that but they'll never vote for their own term limits but the other thing is that he's
02:23:45.300probably made a lot of promises to a lot of people and they feel they owe them and i'm not
02:23:51.640going to use the c word which is comfortable comfortable corruption whatever i'll use it and
02:23:59.220i don't have a problem using it but you know that that's the thing they make a lot of promises
02:24:03.960and people feel they have to i mean it's like my own counselor in midtown he's been around a long
02:24:11.480time he's helped the people he thinks will get him ahead he ignores the people he knows don't
02:24:19.000like him but he has enough of a back you know enough people propping him up to get him back
02:24:25.440in office and that's the same i mean even more so with the mayor he's probably made
02:24:30.520deals with developers and you say all these towers are going up i mean i've seen it time
02:24:36.220and time again all you have to do is look at his 2022 election campaign donations yeah exactly
02:24:43.360all developers all developers yeah 85 of the donors were from outside of toronto i'm sorry
02:24:50.900outside of markham yeah right 177 000 i don't even know where the many went because
02:24:55.800like how much does it cost for a pack of gum and three coffees yeah martin we have to wrap uh but
02:25:01.840i before we do i think you told me that mayor scarpetti is one of the highest paid mayors in
02:25:09.620canada the highest the highest what is he earning per year because i thought kevin ash was way up
02:25:15.780there no he's he was a hovering somewhere it's always varies back and forth but it's between 308
02:25:21.580and 360 third highest paid america dollar for dollar makes more than the mayor in new york city
02:25:26.400how is that justified given markham's population because he pretty much dictates his own salary
02:25:33.000yeah back in gave himself an eight and a half percent raise after raising our taxes three and
02:25:37.620a half percent and gave all the the councillors a four and a half percent raise and this is right
02:25:43.160in the middle of you know all of us you know as citizens struggling financially and he goes and
02:25:50.380Gives himself a $25,000, $30,000 raise.
02:25:53.100Basically spitting in your resident's face right there, if you ask me.
02:57:05.640Tonight, the people of Toronto have spoken!
02:57:10.640And you have given me the extraordinary honor of continuing to serve as your mayor.
02:57:27.640I am grateful, I am humbled, and I am so proud of our city.
02:57:35.640What an election. It was a hard-fought election.
02:57:47.640And I want to begin by thanking every candidate who put their name forward, especially Councilor Brad Bradford.
02:57:56.640We had our differences. We fought hard for what we believed in. Counselor Bradford brought
02:58:13.820new energy and introduced new ideas that people cared about and made his case for them and
02:58:21.480And I respect that, and I know we share a love for Toronto and a belief in its future.
02:58:39.000Now we can disagree on how we get there or what it looks like, but I do not doubt.
02:58:45.460We both want what is best for our city, right?
02:58:54.280And tonight, I want to thank everyone who participated in our democracy.
02:59:08.380Because democracy is something precious, something we must never take for granted.
02:59:15.400Something, yes, something we have to work to maintain with our votes and with our hard work, always.
02:59:34.400Now, now that the election is over, the work of coming together begins.
02:59:42.400I want to say something to every person in Toronto tonight, whether you voted for me or voted for someone else, whether you thought your voice mattered or wondered if anyone was listening.
03:00:00.580And especially to the many people who call Toronto home, who work here, raise families here, contribute to our city every day, but could not or did not vote.
03:02:20.600Well, not exactly the Gettysburg Address, but Joe, my BS detector, the needle went into the red zone when she said she's the mayor of every community,
03:02:31.860every person um she uh well not every community not every person hey just ask the people who've
03:02:40.700left toronto jews who have left toronto i will say this um to play a little bit of a devil's
03:02:47.780advocate on that we have to give it to her 522 000 votes it said i don't think i've ever heard
03:02:54.740of a canadian politician ever getting that vote count that probably is a record i mean we'll have
03:03:00.320to check it uh because there's not that many people in you know the writing so that's a hell
