00:01:02.880 fiscal situation here what was supposed to be a nine billion dollar deficit has suddenly manifested
00:01:12.660 into a projected two billion dollar budgetary surplus it's good news and it's bad because
00:01:21.740 because, well, a surplus means they've taken too much of your money. But to break this down for us
00:01:27.080 is our good friend, Chris Sims of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. Joining me now.
00:01:41.500 So joining me now is good friend of the show, good friend of Canadian taxpayers everywhere,
00:01:45.900 and my real-life good friend, Chris Sims, the Alberta Director of the Canadian Taxpayers
00:01:51.280 Federation. And while we are embroiled in a trade war that Alberta refuses to step into,
00:01:58.800 thank God, and it feels as though the world is burning down all around us, we actually have
00:02:04.240 some pretty good news out of Alberta right now with regard to the budget update. Tell us all
00:02:11.280 about it yes i'm so glad to be able to bring people some wins and you know what just for people
00:02:16.740 listening to this celebrate the wins when you get them okay we have to we must as dennis prager once
00:02:22.780 wrote in the 1980s lovely he said that we often have a duty to be happy and it's a really challenging
00:02:29.580 book i encourage anybody to read that so as of the budget time back in february remember we were
00:02:35.360 staring down around a nine-ish billion dollar deficit, which means they were spending about
00:02:41.080 nine billion dollars more than the government was taking in. And it means that a big chunk of that
00:02:46.940 was going to be thrown onto our scary provincial debt. It was going to knock us over, Sheila,
00:02:52.500 a hundred billion dollars in provincial debt in Alberta for the first time in history. It was
00:02:57.920 gross. Fast forward, stuff started happening in the Middle East basically a few days after the
00:03:03.840 budget. So I think it was around March 6th or 7th, of course, that started happening between
00:03:07.960 the United States and Iran. Up goes the price of a barrel of oil, and it's a lot of money.
00:03:13.320 So as of right now, based on their current books, they released what's called the first quarterly
00:03:18.380 update for the fiscal year a couple of days ago. So far, it looks like we're going to be on track
00:03:25.280 for a $2 billion surplus, which means they've got extra money kicking around. And now everybody
00:03:33.820 especially in the mainstream media are like oh what should we spend this on what should we do
00:03:38.120 with this money yeah they should give it back to us because when the government is in surplus
00:03:44.920 that's not a good thing that means they've taken too much money from you and so we should get a tax
00:03:52.000 cut now you know the predictions are always volatile but two billion dollars is a lot of
00:03:59.140 money taken from roughly 5 million Albertans. Why don't we get some of that back? We should.
00:04:06.200 And this is the golden opportunity, okay, for Jason Nixon, current provincial finance minister
00:04:13.000 here in Alberta. I will point out that this is not Nixon's first time as the finance minister.
00:04:20.000 So he knows the ins and outs, okay? He knows how to work the budget. He knows which bureaucrats to
00:04:25.020 push, okay? And my understanding is he's got some pretty good experienced staff on his team right
00:04:29.700 now. All of this is to say, the ball has been placed on the tee for Finance Minister Jason
00:04:35.920 Nixon. Here they have a surplus. We've been yelling at them all summer to cut the provincial
00:04:42.820 fuel tax in Alberta. And Prime Minister Mark Carney, federally in Ottawa, credit where it's due,
00:04:49.400 just did the right thing and said you know what uh we're going to extend our fuel tax relief
00:04:56.240 so you know whenever they've officially released it they leaked it all over the place so it's
00:05:00.940 basically news now Sheila if that's okay for me to say um they're going to extend the excise gas
00:05:07.160 tax cut they're not going to hike it up on the 8th when they were going to and it's extended
00:05:12.220 from what I've heard, at least until January.
00:05:15.600 So calling balls and strikes here,
00:05:18.960 Carney's doing the right thing
00:05:20.220 by not jacking up that gas tax.
00:05:22.460 So Jason Nixon, surplus right there,

00:05:34.320 instead of 13 cents per liter of gas and diesel.
00:05:37.300 That's the tax cut that they can make right now.
00:05:40.240 We have been there with Canadians.
00:05:42.220 all along. And that's why our government acted earlier this year to temporarily suspend the
00:05:48.380 federal fuel excise tax on gasoline, diesel fuel, and aviation fuels, providing immediate relief
00:05:57.060 at the pump. When the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax was introduced,
00:06:04.580 people will recall on April 20th, gasoline prices declined by 11 cents per liter on the first day
00:06:12.020 of implementation, delivering immediate relief to consumers. It's in that same spirit that I'm
00:06:20.280 pleased to announce today that we are extending that relief. The temporary suspension of the
00:06:26.960 federal fuel exercise will remain in place until January 31st, 2027. From February 1st through
00:06:36.300 March 31st, 2027, the tax will return to half its regular rate before resuming fully on April 1st,
00:06:46.140 2027. Well, and it's, you know, I find these temporary gas tax cuts so ridiculous. Because
00:06:54.320 if I need a gas tax cut right now, because life is more expensive, I'm going to need that gas tax
00:06:59.660 cut in a year from now, when it's more expensive, thanks to government-caused inflation, like just
00:07:05.960 cut the tax don't make it temporary if people need tax relief they always need tax relief
00:07:13.140 you know if you if cutting taxes makes life more affordable and your mission your stated mission
00:07:19.380 is making life more affordable how can you then down the road justify putting it back on exactly
00:07:24.520 so uh i'm of two minds of this one you're right you're right they should thank you i know
00:07:30.800 that's why we have such a good conversation sheila you're right um they should make it
00:07:35.840 permanent what i was very happy to see and again it's like it's groundhog day or something special
00:07:41.120 day um premier doug ford in ontario said the right thing this morning it was amazing um yeah i know
00:07:47.560 i know okay credit rare rare we have to call it when because so rare sacred and rare stunning
00:07:54.180 in a braid. He came out and said, he subtweeted the news that Carney's going to extend the
00:08:01.780 gas tax cut. And he said, good, now make it permanent. Yes, make it permanent. So this is
00:08:10.080 what they need to do now. Again, the good news is here in Alberta, we are no longer in a deficit
00:08:15.780 for this fiscal year, forecasted, forecasted, big asterisk there. We are on track to have a
00:08:22.500 two-ish billion dollar surplus which means that they can a afford to have this gas tax cut and b
00:08:29.960 live up to their own law like that was that was the weird thing remember all spring sheila
00:08:36.720 where we kept saying um guys the price of a barrel of oil is over 80 us per barrel it says
00:08:42.380 based on your own you know rules you're supposed to give us a big gas tax cut and they basically
00:08:47.880 said just keep your powder dry kids wait until July until the fiscal quarter okay whatever we did
00:08:53.040 we did and I was impatient I'll admit because that's my job to be impatient but they didn't
00:08:59.640 give it to us they trotted out this super weird hundred dollar rebate per person thing where you
00:09:07.000 had to go on this government portal and upload your bank account information and in some cases
00:09:12.000 a selfie are they new sheila did they not know that a lot of albertans might not be super
00:09:18.880 comfortable with doing that in order to bring a hundred bucks yeah and just getting back to
00:09:24.100 doug ford okay yes he is right uh the federal government should take it should make the gas
00:09:29.500 tax uh reduction permanent but you know who could make one permanent doug ford yes yes now he did
00:09:38.680 make his he did cut it in half permanently technically his um provincial fuel tax is
00:09:44.300 supposed to be i think 14 cents per liter or 15 cents per liter and it's nine okay so he can make
00:09:51.140 that six zero i know that'd be no super zero right exactly so the good news is is i i can feel like
00:09:58.980 we're biking downhill right now we've got some good news and i saw the bank of canada keeping
00:10:03.980 its interest rate paused it's not hiking it thank goodness for everybody who has a mortgage or land
00:10:08.320 credit. Good news. Fuel tax cut is staying. And now we just need to push all of our provincial
00:10:14.700 premiers to follow suit with Ottawa. I can't believe I'm saying this out loud and do the
00:10:20.780 right thing and cut their fuel taxes. So that would be really good stuff. Now, one of my favorite
00:10:25.500 things that you do is that you put these, you know, random numbers of fuel taxes into tangible
00:10:32.420 things that actually mean something in your family so uh tell us what these 27 cents per liter
00:10:40.820 of gasoline taxes mean to the average albertan is that so sorry is that for the provincial tax and
00:10:50.040 how much we spend for yeah yeah okay what does that mean i got you this new calculator to hold
00:10:55.500 oh on your face it's cute i got this from the dollar store it looks like candy i like it right
00:11:01.220 so 27 cents per liter let's do it based on a 75 liter fuel tank for a family minivan 20 bucks
00:11:10.520 20 bucks every time you're filling up in alberta is just taxes it's crazy and now think about what
00:11:19.480 you can do with 20 bucks if i'm shopping carefully at walmart i can get a roast chicken and two jugs
00:11:27.340 of milk for that that's money or every fifth fill up is free oh that's a good way of putting it okay
00:11:35.300 so let's do 27 cents want to want to drive a pickup truck sheila i do yep there you go so
00:11:42.020 thirty dollars thirty dollars every time you're filling up a regular size pickup truck i'm not
00:11:47.620 even talking about the big honking long box duallys okay just get regular size pickup truck
00:11:52.520 $30 is in fuel taxes here in Alberta.
00:11:56.640 That's without the scary fuel tax hike that we were all worried about coming from Ottawa.
00:12:02.360 So as of right now, filling up, it's costing you $30 in fuel taxes every time you fill up a pickup truck.

00:12:56.260 in downtown vancouver you'd be mad trying to fill that up with all those fuel taxes so all this is
00:13:02.440 to say things are go i wanted some good news today because i know a lot of people are really
00:13:08.360 scared about what's going on with tariffs especially in southern ontario that makes you
00:13:13.040 want to puke um good news there's a surplus in alberta we can make them cut this fuel tax i'm
00:13:21.440 very confident we can carney's keeping the fuel tax cut going and bank of canada keeping its
00:13:28.220 interest rate held so these are these are good things we need to take wins when we get them
00:13:32.340 Yeah. I mean, it's just astounding that on four tanks of fuel, a trucker would save over $1,000.
00:13:44.280 Yes. It's like, it's right here, folks. And like, so years ago, I sat there because I was getting frustrated back when we used to have to fight the original carbon tax. And I was getting frustrated with people saying, oh, it's like $50 per ton or $60 per ton for carbon.
00:14:00.340 nobody knows what that means like what does that mean what's a ton of carbon in the atmosphere i
00:14:07.260 don't know could be unicorn fur i don't right here's this invisible thing we're taxing you on
00:14:14.300 exactly right but i i am a hot wheels nerd i love cars okay i like literally scroll through
00:14:22.660 auto trader for fun even though i don't need to buy a vehicle um so i'm like you know what we do
00:14:27.500 have math that we can math here and so i sat down and i worked out what the fuel tank capacity was
00:14:32.960 on the most popular vehicles so like a ford f-150 or chevy silverado or a dodge grand caravan is the
00:14:41.740 one i use because it's the most popular selling family minivan um and then big rig trucks i just
00:14:46.700 looked up the average peterbilt cylinder i didn't even pick the biggest one yeah and just do the
00:14:52.900 Yeah. So that's how we know that every time a big rig trucker fills up with diesel, it's costing him or her 300 bucks almost just in the taxes.
00:15:03.280 And just so people understand, and you know, my viewers are smart, so I feel like I don't even have to say this, but that goes into the cost of groceries.
00:15:12.640 The guy hauling the groceries to the grocery store, if he has to pay more, shipping goes into the cost of your groceries.
00:15:22.000 so this adds to your food inflation not just hitting you at the pump it's getting you coming
00:15:27.880 and going yep exactly and then also think about how many trucks it's been on right so they pick
00:15:35.140 something up at the port or at the border or maybe in the states something like that across they come
00:15:40.260 that could be one truck and then it gets moved to another truck and maybe a third truck and then
00:15:45.020 maybe a smaller little delivery one because they have to maybe you know weave their way into like
00:15:49.680 downtown edmonton around all the bike lanes and the random uh what is it what are the patios that
00:15:56.540 they've shoved out now into parking spaces right they're smart because that's what everybody wants
00:16:00.280 to smell is exhaust fumes while they're trying to have nachos um imagine them in their smaller
00:16:05.300 delivery trucks trying to find those grocery stores in downtown course i've just like that's
00:16:10.220 like four different trucks and add all that up together this is where you get the layer cake of
00:16:15.080 hell on the cost of fuel and how it makes everything else cost more. And that's not
00:16:21.000 even touching inflation, which is super gross. Yeah, those patios that stick out into the
00:16:26.980 parking stalls, that's a long term ramification of COVID. Remember when they made everybody eat
00:16:34.660 outside? And so everybody built out their patios and now they just left them? Stop it. We need to
00:16:40.740 park somewhere you know i was where was i i was just in oh goodness i drove into oh i drove into
00:16:48.080 toronto for you that's why i went that's right yeah and they've got everything like rammed out
00:16:53.300 across the sidewalk and then into the parking lot what is going on toronto i know it was really hard
00:17:01.460 to get around i was very surprised like the 401 of course it's got like eight lanes going both
00:17:06.420 directions it's pretty crazy for a country mouse but then you get downtown it's like

00:17:36.500 Right. And all this is to say, if we don't push back on things like bike lanes where there shouldn't be bike lanes, like there should be some some places, but they don't need to be bloody well everywhere.

00:18:04.200 And then also, if you let them keep on ramping up things like just randomly closing off parking and this war on the car stuff, what starts happening is what happened in Vancouver.
00:18:14.860 Sheila, they were this close to fining people for driving their own vehicles and parking in front of their own houses in residential areas.
00:18:24.520 They were full on going to spend taxpayers' money arming all these little ticket maids with iPads to scan the year of the vehicle and the size of the vehicle and then charge people accordingly.
00:18:38.580 Like, it was so easy what they were going to spend on this.
00:18:41.480 And they came this close to doing that in Vancouver.
00:18:44.280 So this is why I do rants about that kind of stuff, because if you give them an inch, they'll take a mile and you'll wind up getting major taxes on your vehicles for it.

00:19:17.560 edmonton and calgary and they wanted to go through red deer and somebody wanted them to stop every
00:19:23.400 hour on the hour why though we're a car people we're a car people actually we're not even a car
00:19:32.180 people we're truck people i don't want your high speed rail there's a reason that there is a flight
00:19:38.760 between edmonton and calgary but you know what i always drive to calgary because it doesn't make
00:19:44.560 sense by the time i get to the airport park clear security take the flight get to the other side i'm
00:19:50.460 not there any faster and the downside is i don't have a vehicle when i get there we're we're a
00:19:57.340 practical people the monorail dream just doesn't make sense please stop it just stop also they
00:20:05.400 didn't campaign on that not even a little bit during the no so just no hey if private industry
00:20:10.800 well has mega money and they want to build a choo-choo train like i don't care well yeah you
00:20:16.140 know dagney tagger your little heart out that's fine uh but we shouldn't be doing it with taxpayers
00:20:20.480 money so this is where whenever we hear surplus we're like good but it's a tax cut don't blow
00:20:27.680 this on some silly pet project please this is the resource roller coaster okay that they always talk
00:20:33.020 about don't feed into that narrative and turn around and blow it uh before i let you go because
00:20:38.680 I don't think we've talked about this since this Fraser Institute report came out.
00:20:43.400 Real quick, Canadians spend more on taxes than basic necessities.

00:21:00.560 And, you know, everyone is talking about the cost of living.
00:21:04.660 Inflation is out of control.

00:21:08.300 We cannot access health care. They're giving us these pittance tax cuts that are only temporary. And yet the average family income is $121,000 in this country. And they spend 50, almost 51,000 or 41.9% of the income that the family takes in on taxes.
00:21:30.700 is um and that's compared to 36 for shelter and uh of that 27 000 goes to food and clothing like
00:21:44.340 it's just it's insane it is gross so i want people to remember this the next time they hear some
00:21:51.280 politicians say we're handing out money to this country a foreign country or we're blowing it on
00:21:57.260 alto some imaginary high-speed rail between you know quebec windsor corridor um whenever whatever
00:22:02.580 they're doing uh two hundred thousand dollars on airplane food whatever i want them to remember
00:22:07.080 this the workers who are listening to you right now close to half of your income goes to various
00:22:14.540 levels of government poof gone put another way imagine your paid salary every two weeks
00:22:23.400 Imagine, close your eyes, imagine what lands in your bank account every two weeks.

00:22:35.200 That's how much various levels of government is taking from you.

00:23:00.040 Secondly, to what Sheila's pointing out here, again, Fraser Institute did a knockout job on this.

00:23:08.000 The average Canadian is spending more on taxes than they are on food, clothing and shelter combined.
00:23:14.940 combined so this is why the taxpayers federation are always encouraging people from all ideologies
00:23:23.080 honestly if you're a lefty and i don't know you love organic kale or whatever it is and bike lanes
00:23:28.960 they're wasting your money too they are they're taking half your money and they're wasting it
00:23:34.620 so this is why we're telling everybody to push back on government whenever it does stupid spending
00:23:39.280 projects and waste your money yes and do you have many ways that people can do that so tell us how
00:23:44.780 people can get involved in the taxpayers army oh i love this part so a we went all over alberta
00:23:52.460 by we i mean me and my son because i made him bury stuff for me because it's proud labor
00:23:56.640 yeah i do that to my kids too i you know i've started even working around their schedules a
00:24:02.360 little bit when i schedule things to capitalize on the free labor yeah here hold this gas tax sign
00:24:09.280 for moms while i'm talking to the media um so i spent all august um meeting with people we would
00:24:15.800 do a supporter pancake breakfast in the morning and then i would do a press conference on gas
00:24:19.440 taxes in the afternoon and the reason why i'm sharing this is because so many people say things
00:24:25.040 like this matters to me i don't feel alone anymore um i love meeting people because so many people
00:24:32.200 show up i met new friends i have hope you can't put a price tag on that like i'll get choked up
00:24:38.580 It's super important. So all this is to say, even if you can't donate to us, it's okay.
00:24:44.000 Just join the army for free. It's good for your soul. It's good for fellowship.
00:24:48.680 Go to taxpayer.com, find a petition that speaks to you, okay?
00:24:53.880 Could be gas taxes, could be the CBC, could be, you know, no sales taxes on thrift shops.
